A Compromise for Others Who Don't Want Mounts

Anet can’t please everybody, ‘t is true. But they can please the vast majority. And the vast majority wanted mounts, but the vast majority also didn’t just want mounts for a speed boost, they wanted them to be meaningful. And thus, Anet delivered us exactly that after 5 years of people asking for it.

Where was the poll that showed the ‘vast majority’ wanted mounts?

You sample is probably just your friends who probably think like you. My sample is probably the same where the ‘vast majority’ felt that Mounts is a very bad idea and shows Anet has lost its creative touch and is looking more and more like any other generic MMO.

>Created mounts that have more dimensionailty to them than just pure movement speed boost. Tied heavily into the terrain of the expansion and possibly the lore of the area as well.

>“Anet is not being creative here”

Probably because the two aren’t anything alike aside from moving you 1200 units?
Might as well ask ancestral grace to have the same cooldown as swoop.

I’ve always wanted to know why Swoop was 1100 distance and no other long-distanced travel skill has that number (usually 1200). Not a big deal, though. Devs be devs.

The only thing I can think of is they want 1200 to be the soft target limit of skills but Swoop moving us 1200 units would mean that we would stop at 1200 and then swing while moving us 1100 means we stop just short of a target at 1200 range and then hit them with a 100 range swipe.

I doubt we are getting perfect 1:1 pet buffs. Or, if we do, it won’t last long like the original form of buff sharing on WHaO.

SotW + Sic Em buff + Unblockable attacks via CotW + Rapid Fire = A stream of arrows that will pierce the heavens.

Don’t let your “I just died from a 50k rapid fire and I couldn’t do anything about it!” memes be dreams my dudes.

Why Ride the Lightning is 30 sec CD and Ancestral Grace is 18 sec CD? I gave the same answer to Ele that asked this once on PVP forum, you cant compare similar skills between classes.

Probably because the two aren’t anything alike aside from moving you 1200 units?
Might as well ask ancestral grace to have the same cooldown as swoop.

Also, a major part of the reason that RtL got hit hard with a cooldown nerf was because people were using it to zip around on an ele that evidently wasn’t really intended. Which is why it has the “half cooldown if connects” effect.

Rangers are supposed to be a hard to catch class, ele’s not so much.

Gw2 never had mounts and it just ruins the immersion.

So did you never play HoT or did you just shut your brain off whenever you fought the frogs riding beetles or the Mordrem on their whateverthosewere?

Even GW1 had dwarves riding dolyaks and drakes and people rode atop giant turtles in Factions.

You’re still reaching to find something wrong with the coverage, regardless of your mains.

Did you even watch the video? Not only did she kitten up the recording by chopping off the skill bar but moused over only 3 traits.

I don’t expect 30 minutes of someone using each pet skill in beast mode but 5 seconds of mousing over each trait quickly wouldn’t have been too much to ask.

Cant compare similar abilities/traits between 2 professions. Berserker warrior after taking fatal blow, and gain the heal, will have hard time to go back to full hp. Ranger from 3k hp can get to full hp on several builds in no time.

You’re looking at this as though the expansion won’t include a massive balance patch as well as upgrades for everyone, not just ranger.

That 3k health could be just 1 auto attack from 1200 range on the rifle thief for all we know. Considering how overtuned staff is, it wouldn’t surprise me at all.

Rangers refuse to use rifles and technology, but rather to develop their affinity to nature. That’s the lore. Bother to understand.

Having an affinity to nature does not mutually exclude using technology nor is that explicitly stated anywhere.

Engineer’s were scientists who used gadgets in battle and then suddenly got to smash things with giant hammers like a warrior.

Warrior’s were brute force soldiers who can now use fanciful dagger dances to take down sorcerers like some kind of martial mesmer.

Nowhere does Ranger have anything that resembles technology use. It is all nature magic. Affinity was the incorrect word. Using nature magic does rule out the use of technology, it just doesn’t fit and it is unecessary since you can do whatever you want with magic.

Also, it IS explicitly stated.

OnRPG: I knew there would be bows and things, but as you say the technology has advanced, so will they be more than pointy sticks on a string?

Anet: [Jon]The Ranger, one of the things we did with it in Guild Wars 2 is kind of go with a much more bestial and naturey feel and so because of that he kind of focuses on a lot weapons that are very natural. If he’s in melee combat he uses great swords and swords, and at range he throws axes, uses bows and short bows, long bows, and a lot of his spells, I got to mention the trap that [has] poison snakes, or he summons a nature spirit, and so we kind of embraced that naturey feel with him, kind of took him in that direction because we feel like that’s an archetype that people who play a Ranger really like and it gives us kind of an opportunity, you know in other places, to use the more advanced rifles and pistols with our [more earthly? doesn’t sound right..garbled..Sounded like it was a glitch or edited out intentionally..] professions.

[Eric]Yeah, I think we’d like to look at as the Ranger profession has evolved the same way that the world has evolved, and the Rangers have sort of gone anti-technology, they’ve gone into the wild, they’ve gone and embraced sort of spirit, and things like that. There are other professions in our, you know, five unye, as yet revealed, we mentioned Warriors for example have no problem using rifles. There are plenty of other professions remaining we’re going to use both rifles and pistols, and so for the Ranger it just didn’t feel right for them to be using firearms.

As the world evolved, the Rangers went further into the wild… away from technology, and more towards being bestial and “naturey.”

http://www.onrpg.com/news/guild-wars-2-exclusive-ranger-interview-transcription/

Yeah, Engineer got a Hammer, a rocket powered hammer that you can ionize, magnetise and reflect projectiles with because it makes you spin around so fast. More tech than blunt instrument.

And warrior got daggers and a different martial style, seems like a logical progression for a class that is already the most proficient at martial weapons.

Ranger got more nature magic.

Off hand interviews are hardly official canon especially when it’s established fact that what we know of as The Ranger is an amalgamation of 2-3 classes they couldn’t get to work independently. They were still trying to figure out what to even do with the Ranger in 2010. The interview even has them talking about the old “you can summon 3 pets at once” thing that got scrapped before ever seeing the light of day.

Pretty sure they would have said swords and hammers on engineers didn’t fit the theme of a gun tech class at the time either.

There’s also absolutely no reason a rifle can’t be nature themed. If WoW can give Beast Mastery specced Hunters a dps spam skill that shoots green snakes from their rifles, I think Anet can manage to come up with a few nature themed gun skills.

Vine surge would have been a perfect Ranger Rifle skill. Maybe a shot that teleports your pet to the enemy? A skill that simulates you shooting a hornet’s nest out of a tree to fall on an area and create a pulsing aoe? A skill that simulates injuring your target so your pet can track it’s blood and does +% damage to it for x seconds? A skill that shoots out a trap skill to an area and gives us back at least 1 ranged trap skill?

If the hammer can be a ranged magic weapon on the Rev, a rifle can easily be a huntsman survival utility tool on the Ranger.

Hell, even using steel weapons is unnatural as that’s a man made alloy. To say nothing of the mythrilium used in ascended gear. If we were some druid hermit people we’d only use flint axes and sharp sticks to kill things. Using way points would also be verboten.

For raid condi ranger I don’t think the pet’s damage was even in double digits.

Condi ranger is grossly misleading as almost all the damage comes from a giant HP sponge sitting in perpetual bonfires which is why it’s ~ #3 for damage in the game while being so easy a child could play it effectively.

Pretty much any pvp build is going to have a lot of damage come from the pet and many like the old regen build heavily relied on the pet for damage.

Potentially but we will have access to our pets’ movement skills now. If you watch the video, she uses the absorbed pig’s brutal charge and, while short range, it looks like a reliable, easy to land leap and knockdown. I’d imagine hounds will give us both of theirs as well.

So the only interesting ones are Bear for Defy Pain and Smokescale for Smoke Assault, and maybe Porcine for Brutal Charge.

All pets have the same skills per family except for the F2 and it was pretty obvious that we wouldn’t get their F2’s. At least not direct copies.

Can you imagine how OP it would be to burn people down with our own copy of Stalk? 6 seconds of perma stealth that doesn’t go away when we deal damage while increasing our crit rate by 30% and giving a boost to ferocity as well?

The “I just died from a 300,000K rapid fire I couldn’t even see!” threads would be hot and heavy and start almost immediately.

Sure, we can make the comparison, but Berserker mode needs to be charged. As for Beast Mode, you can stay on it forever.

While true we still don’t know the full mechanics of the new spec and it’s likely there is some downside to being in beast mode.

You also still need to exit BM if you want to switch pets to use new skills. That’s a 10 second window where this won’t work. You might also want your hound to slow down a person while you try to bug out and heal up. This won’t save you if you make that choice.

One of the GM traits literally gives you a second life if you’re in beastmode when you get downed. looks like an incredibly powerful elite spec overall. as per usual ANet antics, there will be no reason to roll with any GM other than Eternal Bond in pvp. maybe that stance sharing one in wvw.

That trait looks good, until you compare it to Dead or Alive on Berzerker.

Less health, 3x the cooldown, and takes up a grandmaster slot in exchange for 3 seconds of protection.

Why does Anet do this to us? This can’t be on accident anymore.

Also if you notice, the leader of the pack GM trait its just 360 radius, that is total garbage and useless. If i remember correctly the bad thing about venom share thieves was that the venom sharing radius was 360 and people never got buffed lol. They practically need to be hugging you to get the buff, meeeh total kitten, sound good on paper but will end up been useless. Eternal Bond will probably be the most used, best of them all.

Eternal Bond is reeeeeeally crappy.

As a whole, I’d say our grandmaster traits are underwhelming to say the least. The stance sharing trait would be a lot better if they increased the radius to the size of a point in PvP and set priorty for party members and then the people closest to you.

Also, while Oppressive Superiority sounds great on paper, fighting a class with high sustain and constant damage pressure will mean it will rarely take effect. Don’t forget, we don’t have the same amount of sustain by dropping Druid in favor of Soulbeast. If it were something like “When you apply a condition, apply a random condition on the same target.” with a 1 second icd, it might be more interesting.

Leader of the Pack should be 600 radius like Tempest Auras and not half duration, that is just a complete waste.

Yup, Oppressive Superiority could also be completely useless just in PvE if the health is not a , since it will be totally nullified on all bosses except the last 1.

It could be so good but with that radius is not going to be used, just a waste. Even with the 50% reduction in time, if they increase the radius it would kinda be useful but like its now, nope total waste.

Does someone have info on this, i havent seen much people saying this. When you merge with the pet do you get for example if its a dps pet, lets say some buff like +150 power +150 ferocity or something like that. Maybe toughness if is a tanky pet or some buff. If not then what is the point of merging with the pet if you are going to be losing damage, ranger dmg is already not that wow compare to other classes.

the teaser videos from anet seem to imply that we get their skills as well as “their abilities”. I’m assuming we will get a stat buff based on the pet family but all we know for certain is our F skills get turned into the pet’s auto skills.

The video shows the ranger merging with a pig and then having access to maul and brutal charge for example.

Her presentation was terrible though so it’s not clear if we also get their F2 ability or not nor do we know if we get any kind of damage boost.

I’m half expecting Anet to just give us the pet’s auto attack ability and expecting us to spam F1 rapidly to get the dps to equal out.

Scourge look powerful with lot of boon hate and condi, spellbreaker again lot of boon hate, i think most are aimed to wvw and pvp in which boons have been dominating. The specializations look good and useful, sadly the few i have seen of soulbeast doesn’t look that impressive.

Undesirability in WvW intensifies.

Does Anet really think that folding the pet into the ranger is going to make us wanted in WvW when all we can do is put out some piddly bleeding to 2 targets and laughable buffs like 3 seconds of resistance every 40s?

Even thieves will be useful in guild groups with their pin snipe abilities. Ranger is just gonna have another 2 years of being the class you main if you want to get laughed at when trying to join a serious WvW guild.

the only good thing about all this is in zerg fights your useless pet you can now put it away/merge with it and not die been total useless. Now you can at least (hopefully) get some bonus depending on pet, better than having it die with any aoe that hits it. Other than that, the specialization looks underwhelming compare to the others, not even close. Hope i am wrong.

Not losing functionality in a fight bigger than 10v10 will be nice but our current weapons aren’t exactly the stuff of legend in big fights and the new dagger looks incredibly bad in a big fight, more single target, “victory via small cuts and survival” stuff that we’ve always had. Not exactly breaking new ground.

Hopefully things are either not as bad as they seem or can change but right now the only thing that has me hyped is the new maps and the mounts. The fact that Anet couldn’t even devote energy to hyping Soulbeast really makes me think I shouldn’t either.

mounts don’t ruin the game. FLYING MOUNTS DO.

Take World of Warcraft as an example. The Devs over there regretted putting in flying mounts and have been trying to remove them at least at the beginning of every expansion since their introduction. They remove any sort of tension or danger when you can just fly away or hover over them, Its also hard to stop people exploring the world and gaining access to areas before you should. If Anet doesn’t make the same mistake by introducing flying mounts then it’ll be just fine.

Maps aren’t large enough and are loaded via isolated cells which is why we need to go through portals in little canyons to travel between maps.

Flying would be a waste since we can just TP for irrelevant fees and can’t even fly over the mountains bordering each map to get to another.

The hovering manta ray and gliding are likely as close as we will ever get.

Constructive Rant on Balancing

Substance E.4852

Who uses a shortbow? MOST players don’t and looking at the skills in the nerf list three of them I use every single day were blasted down while Shortbow of all things gets ‘buffed’ but not really, it was just returned to a pre-nerf state from a previous nerf, no gains for anyone else.

Ok, seriously, what’s your citation for this? Because none of the buffs that have been given to shortbow are equivalent to nerfs in its skill history. Heck, the only nerf shortbow has ever gotten was the drop to 900 range and these buffs certainly can’t be described as returning it to its pre-nerf state.

So again, what’s the nerf you’re referring to when you say that these shortbow buffs are undoing a previous nerf?

Aside from it’s range, it’s probably at a point where it does as much, if not more dps than the old machine gun zerk sb did.

The only reason why it was even considered good was because our other options, especially longbow, were complete trash tier in terms of damage at the time. No fast rapid fire, no hard hitting path of scars, and whirling hit like a spring breeze.

That form also lost a significant amount of it’s damage when they reduced quickness to 50% attack speed for everyone.

I don't think we will get mh dagger (spoiler)

in Ranger

Posted by: Substance E.4852

Substance E.4852

It’s a dagger. If it’s the traitline image being referred to, don’t look at the image and guess. The first trait on each one of those leaks has a weapon symbol. For the Ranger’s, it’s the one below. The sword weapon symbol is diagonal.

There is a valid reason for this, spellbreaker was the first elite specialization created so the dagger icon was build first and likely used as a placeholder.

Take a close look at the actual picture (I can’t repost it do to forum rules):

1.) If it was a dagger, why wouldn’t the weapon’s form be accentuated. There is no blade and the outline of the object resembles many of the focuses in the game. There is no way that is a dagger.

2.) The item held is in the right hand, which is traditionally the offhand slot since all GW models wield mainheand weapons in the left.

3.) A class that manipulates spirit energy from pets, it would be fitting for the object held to be a totem of some sort.

4.) Compare the design to things like the Crimson Lion focus and the Krytan Focus, the shape and aesthetic is very similar.

You’re basing your entire argument on over stylized art while trying to hand wave away obvious evidence to the contrary.

You sound like the people who were absolutely convinced the Daredevil art was just a thief with an insanely long rifle that he was holding wrong.

1. The whole lower arm area is muddled by what appears to be some kind of eagle gauntlets that will be our “class armor part” as well as a bird (because ranger) and the trait wheel itself. It could also very well be a hand scythe like the Dragon Kama but held correctly. Based on the image alone, it could just as easily be some kind of mace like Brahm’s.

2. Every PC is right handed in this game. When do you ever pull out a sword on a ranger and hold it in your left hand?

3. Dagger could also work just as well. Either as a “sacrificial ceremonial dagger” or as a bestial “rip enemies apart with my hands” kind of weapon.

4. Again, muddied art work where the artist did a terrible job of placing the weapon front an center like every other class does.

Also, what purpose would another offhand even serve? We already have a support, utility, power dps, and condi offhand. There’s essentially no niche left for it to fill. We DO, however, need a power mainhand that is focused on pure damage without sacrificing dps for evades as well as a condition melee option.

With the way most battles go down, it’s the class that’s the most durable that is the best choice. You can’t do better than a nomad’s guardian. Druid simply doesn’t have enough hard survival abilities. Our best “invul” skills is stone signet which has a long cool down and doesn’t block condi damage.

I don’t understand the cd reduction on the spike trap being pvp only tho, it’s not even meta in pve.

Same with LR. Anet shied away from splits for all kinds of reasons and now seems to be splitting skills that they have no reason to.

Druid/Ranger Fix

You can go condi druid, power druid, healer druid, or condi ranger.

That’s only two builds. No matter what method you use on your druid to charge up AF, it’s still there for heals and GotL buffs.

You’re either running heal buff bot druid or condition DPS ranger. You aren’t getting into raid groups running zerk ranger.

lol are people really trying to act like there isn’t a clear set of gag weapons in the game?

-Dreamer shoots Lisa Frank rainbow unicorns that have a MLP stamp of the Anet logo on their butts.
-Quip is a plastic toy gun that shoots streamers and sparkles at people.
-Moot is a disco ball on a stick compelte with associated dance club effects.
-Shooshadoo is a literal fishbowl that you use as a shield.

The only one that really falls into a grey area is the new rifle since it seems incredibly silly but probably wasn’t meant to evoke a humorous response like the above clearly were.

Everything else might seem garish or in poor taste, but they weren’t intentionally designed to be punchlines.

Signet of the Wild "bug"

in PvP

Substance E.4852

It’s hardly overpowered with all the projectile reflect spam riddled in HoT

You mean the counter play to all the Range projectile Spam in game? SoW is a bug and needs to be fixed, period.

Anet will fix “bugs” like jump casts but not something as blatant as this says a lot.

And you say it’s not OP, let’s see does any other single skill in game give 5 stacks of Stability, provide 25% damage increase and 50% movement speed increase and now have the unintended Bug of being unblockable all for 8 seconds? On a relatively short Cd compared to all those effects. Hell that is better than most elites in game and it’s not like it can’t be cast while in Stealth to help eliminate the Tell on cast, on top of the 5 stacks of Stability being applied upon activation to stop it from being interrupted.

I love this alternate reality people live in where rangers have unbelievable burst potential and can insatgib you if you give them an ounce of an opening.

I guess that’s why every optimal ranger build has been some form of a tank. (spirit bunker, regen bunker, Druid)

Pet issues brought up in 2011

Substance E.4852

It’s too late now. They won’t ever really improve the core issues at this stage. Some band-aid fixes slapped on is what we can hope for at most, but I doubt even that will happen.

Literally the best we can hope for is another 1-2 good pets in the next expansion that will then be nerfed down to barely passable after enough pleb tears flood the pvp forum.

Rangers opinions on Caudecus fight

Druid heals did save my butt a couple times in the final room but it wasn’t really that hard.

People are just mostly terrible at the game to be honest. Hell, doing the bloodstone golem events makes me feel like I’m the only one throwing shards at it while everyone else is dying around me to easily avoided damage trying to melee the kitten thing.

It’s not hard to see why many people find it to be “too hard”.

Jade Shard Drop Issue

So the $64,000 question would be why was the AB ML allowed to continue for ages when this nipped within days ??

I can guarantee you that there were likely hundreds, if not thousands, of players who literally only logged in to mindlessly farm ABML.

It was also the only HoT map that saw any serious activity these days. VB has been dead for over a year now and I rarely see people bother with tangled depths events anymore.

Either the situation finally got so bad they just had to intervene or they figured a new raid would keep people placated.

Got the rooster 3 times within 18 keys, its not very rare.

For every person on the lucky end of the bell curve, there’s a guy on the opposite, kitten end spending 18 keys and getting nothing but revive orbs and tomes.

Low damage output and dead pets in wvw

in Ranger

Posted by: Substance E.4852

Substance E.4852

Well I proved the damage thing wrong,

lol, the maul build proves nothing wrong. Ranger strengths either come from healing or survivability. Our damage is subpar at best in both pvp and pve builds. It drops off significantly in group fights (10+) because virtually all of it is single target and can’t reach significant levels without giving up a lot of sustain. Go ask GvG guilds how many of them bring a ranger as part of their normal team comp. At best you might find a couple that bring the druid as a healbot, but that’s going to be it.

That maul build has been in the game for years and has always been a gimmick that doesn’t work against good players 1v1 and doesn’t work in group fights at all.

Ranger Offhand Torch

Substance E.4852

Add teleport to torch 4 and your utility is met.
Btw change the dagger throw skill to sonething like heartseeker to make dagger more useful.

that would be dope but i bet they’ll wont do that. parrenlty the next expac is giving ranger main hand dagger, hopefully there’s something like a blink on there

Pretty sure that’s still a completely unfounded rumor. We could get hammer and a “bunny thumper” spec for all we know.

Getting a power melee weapon that isn’t a clusterkitten of mixed use mechanics would be a nice addition.

I love the idea of bunny thumper and personally prefer power based builds. however that “leak” ended up predicting eureka and a dagger ranger kinda makes sense with a desert theme, and a melee condi weapon would deff fill a empty space with ranger

https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/53d21c/what_might_come_in_expansion_2/?st=iwmrttno&sh=f287d84a he accurately described the legendary mace before it dropped. parrenlty its legit

We also had leaked info that seemed to indicate that the Druid was going to have some kind of animal totem attunements or w/e and then we got something completely different so it’s not worth calling until we have final word from Anet.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/3e1w33/datamined_skilleffect_of_the_druid_specialisation/

Given this class’s rocky design past, we could very well be on our second or third redesign for our next elite spec.

Having a look at GW2 long-term results.

The cash shop is pervasive now. There are people who want to spend money to get stuff rather than play the game. My sons are both like that, because that’s the environment they grew up in.

They see a new game, they buy the game and then spend money on downloadable content or in the cash shop or whatever. That’s how they’re trained to think.

Not having the ability to do that could hurt the game, because people will have less options. As nuts as it sounds, not everyone wants to play a game they’re playing.

They’d rather take short cuts with cash.

That sounds like a personal issue your kids have that you’re projecting onto others.

Yes no one plays face book games and spends money on gems. Candy Corn Crush didn’t make a ton of money. Farmville didn’t make a ton of money. It was all just my kids. Keep telling yourself that.

Or maybe it’s endemic to the way the world works now and that’s why more and more games, like Archeage, and BDO are putting more and more emphasis on cash shops, in many of the same ways. People don’t copy the formula if it doesn’t work . At the very least you should realize that.

Sounds to me like you’re not paying attention to what’s actually been going on.

Sounds to me like you want to back peddle.

People wanting to throw money at the screen to buy things in a game they play is not the same thing as people buying an outfit in a game that they then stop playing or have no desire to play.

Mobile games are also designed to require payment to keep playing. Try playing virtually any mobile/browser game without cracking open your wallet and you will find yourself not playing very much at all. It’s not even remotely the same thing as a kid buying an outfit in Maplestory, feeling completely satisfied by that alone, and then going to do something else as soon as they have it.

Loot Box Odds in China

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Substance E.4852

I think you’d have to provide some clear numbers of how many people buy keys due to addiction versus how many buy them for fun. With only anecdotal evidence to go by, i don’t think it’s a big enough problem that ANet (or any gaming company) should change policies to address it.

What do you consider to be the break point exactly? I have a feeling that many would consider buying $100 worth of keys a month to be innocent fun but would side-eye someone who spends $100 a month on lottery tickets despite the latter actually having some chance of a tangible payout.

You also don’t necessarily need to btfo your savings to be an addict. The nature of addiction is the inability to stop.

Putting in the % to win might not make that much of a difference, but it still might help give some people pause when they learn the chances of ever getting that “finally a win” release are all but impossible, or keep them from ever dipping their toe in the first place.

China, the land of (no/poorly) upheld regulations, isn’t about to slap a law like this on lottery boxes unless they were fairly convinced it would make a difference.
