I really don’t know why they haven’t made a swimwear set for the gem store yet.

I know people will shout “I don’t want to see a sea of female human toons in bikinis!” but honestly, you didn’t see that happen in FF14. Sure, some people would wear the bathing suits or the subligar armor, but most didn’t.

Once the novelty runs out they’ll just go back to what ever they were wearing before.

I have a solution for people who don’t enjoy armor in Guild Wars 2, or most armor in any MMORPG. The solution is to play World of Warcraft for 10 days and then quit. After that, you’re going to enjoy every design ANY other game will offer, no matter how bad it actually is. Trust me, this works. I played World of Warcraft for years, went into Guild Wars 2, and every armor design in the game is godsend for me compared to World of Warcraft’s armor design.

Sadly Ive actually played FF14 for over 6 months so I actually have the inverse of the this effect.

what bothers many of us about skimpy outfits is not that they exist, but mainly 2 issues:
-when most of the female outfits or armor is skimpy, you’re taking options away from them, you can only be sexy, and many girls don’t want to only look sexy. So, more options is better.
-males don’t really get many skimpy outfits or armor choices (I’m looking at you, medium armor human male)and some guys also want the option to look sexy and show some skin, so again, more options would be apreciated.

I don’t think anyone wouldbe against sexy armor for females if they had the CHOICE to wear them or not, and if males had comparable options to dress skimpy too.

For a more company like Anet, that has tried t be progressive, this should be a non issue at all.

Guess what game’s got you covered then.

But I do agree. It’s funny that people give Terra so much kitten for it’s skimpy armor and completely gloss over the fact that the skimpy/skintight armor was mostly on the Elves and Castanics which had male versions that were just as outlandish and “kittenty” as the female ones in their own way.

Anet has little in the way of Skimpy male armor with only the Daydreamer’s Finery really presenting a “sexy for the sake of sexy” option for men. Pitfighter and Scallywag sort of fall under this but they both also have a heavy “gladiator” theme to them which means it sort of makes sense that you wouldn’t have full coverage.

No more new 5PlayerContent outside Fractals?

Substance E.4852

And this AR-stuff is just so… unnecessary. Why don’t we have “dungeon resistance” for high-level dungeons? “Raid resistance” for final raid wings? Or idk, Maguuma resistance for HoT-maps? We don’t have that because it’s dumb! So why is this stuff part of fractals? They should just remove AR completely and make high-level fractals harder in some other, creative way. Most of my friends never tried fractals higher than lvl20 because they’re basically just not interested in upgrading their equip with a stat that is only useful in one niche content part of the game.

I have a feeling Anet started panicking in the early days of the game when there was essentially no non-pvp endgame and a rather easy equipment ladder to climb. I don’t doubt many left out of boredom and plenty of MMO’ers turn their nose up at the idea of no treadmill even if they say they hate it.

Essentially, they over compensated. Anet went and did the maximum amount of treadmill they thought they could get away with and it was generally a flop. The average joe player didn’t care about high level fractals and the hardcore PvE’er who did was probably able to TP most of the cost away relativly quickly with all the speedrun gold they had.

I think the only reason we don’t have equipment checks for other pve content is because the community collectively told Anet to go kitten themselves when they released a brand new equipment tier after they said there wasn’t going to be a stat treadmill in GW2.

If people hadn’t been so irate I have no doubt we would see other infusion types for other pve content or a more general application of Agony in other content like Raids etc.

Scribing Costs

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Substance E.4852

Like define “reasonable”? Or what the GW2 teams idea of “reasonable” is? Since it’s pretty clear when it comes to the cost of materials and grinding, “reasonable” is very a subjective and broad adjective.

Like is “reasonable” going to be something personally obtainable by a single individual who hasn’t been stockpiling tons of materials and gold since the dawn of GW2? Is “reasonable” obtainable without the help of an entire guild of people if you don’t all into the former category?

Because if “reasonable” is according to the same standards you have applied to everything else in HoT where players are being treated like hamsters in a wheel, endlessly grinding massive amounts of materials for little reward, because economic stimulation is priority one and player’s actual enjoyment is second, then “reasonable” is pretty debatable.

At the end of the day, you have a personal crafting profession that is intended mostly for the benefit of the entire guild, but also contains a small percentage of personal items. This crafting profession currently requires the help of an entire guild to complete and the results of that guild’s time and material investment are not owned by the guild. A player can quit the game, leave the guild or use their crafting profession to help other guilds, all three creating scenarios ripe for drama and hostility when the original guild who helped them loses out on their investment.

It seems to me the scribe profession is way more broken and controversial than just making prices more “reasonable” can fix.

I’d like to chime in and say scribe is a guild profession, not meant for materials to be gathered by a single person, you are supposed to ask the guild for help. it sounds like you don’t have a very good group of people in your guilds if you’re thinking about them leaving/quitting, sure things happen, but if you have a big organized guild there’ll always be someone to take their place.

And yet it still makes the same account bound backpacks every other profession makes.

You want that spiffy messenger bag back item you say? Better hope you’re the one the entire guild rallies behind to fund…

Making an entire crafting profession revolve around a guild funneling communal resources to a single person just so you can perform said profession is crappy design.

They should have just done away with the whole idea and made the thing some kind of guild menu interface where it’s part of the hall itself and anyone can contribute to the crafting level and make scribe items. The system wouldn’t hinge on a single person and the idiotic system would make much more sense.

And lets not pretend this was any kind of community building exercise by Anet. This was a blatant material vacuum that was meant to stir up the economy and eat up surplus materials. Nothing more.

They are removing desert borderland because (1) they are in panic mode because mostly everyone left beside tier 1-2 and (2) it’s cheaper to bring back old stuff than redesign new content.

While I agree with the idea of the second, I’m fairly certain that they will rework the DBL a bit before bringing it back. Taking it back only to rotate it back in with the same issues is like a dealership issuing a recall notice only to give you back your car afterwards with the problem still present.

I’m also pretty sure they’re bringing back Alpine so they can have the breathing room to rework the Desert. The issues with the map go so deep as to need major reworks of terrain and layout. That takes a lot of time to physically do as well as plan and design. It’s much better to bring back what people know and like for a while rather than leave the Desert up while you make said changes.

I don’t usually defend ArenaNet, but they never said there was an April 19th release date.

He said:

Hi all,

This week we’re completing dev work and starting integration for the upcoming Spring Quarterly Update, which we’re preparing to launch in mid- to late April. It’s a busy week making sure everything comes together right and hits our quality bar.

True but one would assume that with both leagues and SAB ending on Tuesday that the logical thing to do would be to release the update then.

Unless they run into a serious issue that needs to be addressed before shipping, it makes little sense to end two big events on the same day and tell the community to wait a week until the mystery update drops.

All they would do is make people angry and invite a deluge of “why can’t I play SAB for another week if we have to wait a week for the update?!” posts.

Pretty sure this is just Mo leaving wiggle room.

New loot system

in WvW

Posted by: Substance E.4852

Substance E.4852

No Nein Non

We need more uses for badges and proofs of heroics. We need more vendors with unique gear for WvW. We need more rewards related to the achievements.

What we absolutely do not need is any kind of convoluted loot mechanism that gets in the way of killing each other, more PvE, or a system that ends up drawing in people who are here only for the loot chest.

Badges and proofs are earned through multiple ways and you can still earn plenty even if your PPT is the lowest all night. Any kind of “own location A for phat loot” system will draw in fair weather players who will clog up the maps when winning and leave fighters high and dry when things aren’t going so well.

It’s one thing if I have to sit in a 30 man queue for EBG because there are 30 people there for fights in front of me. It’s a while different beast when that queue is 30 people simply trying to get in so they can loot the SMC chest that currently up for grabs.

It wil be no different than the first WvW season when people flooded in to get the rewards and check off achievements but not to actually participate in the fighting.

Do we really need expansions?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Substance E.4852

Substance E.4852

They probably could, but there is obviously more to be made with an expansion than any gem store tie ins could ever make them.

The other element is that the expansion is a hard gate to content that is a very appealing carrot to dangle in front of f2p people to get them to pony up the $50.

While it would be possible to do this with LS content. It would be incredibly hard to implement without the new maps to keep it on.

Imagine trying to create LS1 style content but also needing a way to keep free to play people from participating. Do you create 2 instances of maps so they can’t participate?

While that might be feasible it doesn’t make the game appealing to f2p people when certain maps look devoid of players because they are all on the “proper version”. Ideally, you want f2p intermingling with paid players as much as possible to entice them to pay to access the same loot and services.

ghastly grinning shield skin

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Substance E.4852

In the last 24h over 300 shields were traded, around 80 greatsaws but only 1 scythe. So the low price greatly increased demand for shield and greatsaw, but the price drops like crazy anyway. It looks really fishy to me.
I would like John Smith or Chris Cleary to inspect it.

Except you have 0 way of knowing how many of those sales were people buying for the purposes of applying, and thus consuming, the skin or to simply relist it hoping for an easy flip profit.

Your entire theory revolves around 3 ideas to hold it up

1. There is some kind of dupe method that has only so far been seen used on the Greatsaw and GGS though not the Scythe for reasons.
2. There is a massive use demand for one of the least used weapon types that should be eating up a kosher supply spike but isn’t because supply is seemingly overtaking the consumption.
3. The person/s responsible seem to be able to dupe items yet chose to do so on two of the most high profile items in the game. Items that are known to have a hard limit on their availability. They also seem to be doing this to such a ludicrous extent that they are destroying the value of the item as a “high trade value commodity”. They seem to be unable to understand how they’re greed is destroying their potential gains yet leave the scythe seemingly untouched and in the 5k range.

When people discover a dupe usually one of two things happen. They either go ham and/or the dupe is released publicly and things get so out of hand that the server needs a rollback. Or, they are sneaky about it and its not revealed until much later when the wrong person finds out and it’s made public and thus fixed.

I’ve never seen someone go crazy on only a few items like they are trying to keep a low profile but end up targeting big ticket items and grind them into the dirt in the process.

ghastly grinning shield skin

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Substance E.4852

Substance E.4852

the price dropped by another good bit, its starting to be alarming considering the skins have not been introduced since Halloween 2014 and only a small amount back then.
The scythe skin is at 5k and unaffected, so I doubt the price drop from greatsaws and the shield is just from returning players. Scythe would be affected, too. There must be more to it.

To be far, the Scythe did see the addition of two melee staff classes while only one class got a shield and no one got a great sword.

I don’t doubt there were hundreds of DD’s and Rev’s chomping at the bit to scythe down enemies.

While there might be something fishy going on, the staff does have some real user demand behind it while hardly anyone ever used shields back when the thing was absurdly expensive. They still really don’t. People wanted the GGS because it was a prestige item you wore in LA to shout “look how filthy rich I am” and really nothing more. Once that starts to erode away, it will snowball hard.

I mean, hell, it’s plummeted in price yet I still don’t see many wearing it. If people genuinely wanted it for it’s appearance alone (to such an extent that the demand creates a 4 digit price tag) it should be everywhere now that it’s fallen from “more than even the legendary shield” to less than some BLC shields.

Do we really need expansions?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Substance E.4852

Substance E.4852

I don’t really mind if games release content as an xpac, or bit by bit, I just want it to be non-rushed, quality content and available to as many people as possible.

This. The moment I saw the release date on the ‘expansion’, I knew it would be a limited rush job. And despite the white knights desperate to say it was more than four maps . . . it was four maps.

Don’t give us that ‘another level means another map’ nonsense.

I don’t mind an expansion. But I do mind a half-baked, unfinished, untested mess plagued with bugs and then beaten to death with nerfs because it was not properly tested in order to make some undisclosed deadline.

Do we really need expansions?

No, but certain persons screamed to high heaven for them in the first place . . . and here we are . . . those persons no longer around.

To be honest it’s really 3.5.

Dragon Stand is a map in the strict technical sense but there is no element of exploration and no events/story outside of the limited time, every couple hours meta event.

It can be considered a map about as much as the raid areas could be considered new maps.

Selling SAB

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Substance E.4852

Actually, selling dungeon runs does add currency to the game as the end of a dungeon gives gold to those present at the end.

Except that many times it involves a group running the instance and then 4/5 people leaving so those spots could be sold for the run.

There was never any “added gold”. The dungeons were always meant to be done by a party of 5. Even if one person soloed the thing and then sold the spots at the end it would still be handing out as intended amounts of rewards.

People getting undeserved rewards aside, nothing was happening that wasn’t meant to happen. It wasn’t like selling runs was producing 6+ sets of rewards per dungeon.

You are the one who put forth the idea that EotM was a superior system to WvW. All I did was point out all the reasons it failed to work as a similar attack/defend big fight pvp game mode.

If people actually wanted what EotM offers more than what WvW offers they would have moved there when it launched. They didn’t.

Your idea that Anet should quote “give up WvW it’s time has passed by” is laughable at best if you seriously think people would just move on to an inferior system. WvW lost a huge amount of people just to the desert borderlands and the HoT mechanics alone.

YB is a boring opponent. Basically you have to drain their map of supplies, kill all their siege, get past all Anet’s cheese mechanics THEN you might get a fight. They’re like the guy in the drinking game bragging that he’s still sober at the end of the night. I’m all for sobriety but buddy pretty much missed the point or joined the wrong game. That’s YB, they’re in wvw to pve.

^this. In my experience, JQ and BL go after each other due to some pretty good fights. While these two are battling it out, YB is back capping, ‘stealth sieging’, PvD, etc.

Pointless to fight YB in this environment. When a BG zerg meets a JQ zerg, there is might stacking, pushing, healing, falling back, strategy, players actually hitting each other with class skills, etc. A fight with YB? YB sees another zerg they immediately drop 10+ siege on a choke point and siege hump, hoping to god the other team charges them. Only idiotic teams will ‘charge’ YB like that, zergs looking for fights will go elsewhere and leave YB to their PvD activities.

I can’t count how many times BQ has teamed up to take down YB. When 2 servers will not fight each other and gang up on the underdog what do you expect that underdog to do? YB came up with tactics to win against getting tag teamed. The only reason JQ and BG are fighting each other now is because neither of them want to be in third.

I’m pretty sure underdog’s are supposed to be small and not the obvious pick for the winner consistently. Not the “oh well that guy’s going to obviously win, just look at him” choice.

Sorry bro. Yb isn’t the underdog.

Dominator's Weapons

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Substance E.4852

Substance E.4852

If you read the post… I said that the longbow was the reskin of the ascended longbow (essentially).

I don’t mind a few recolors or reskins, but not from weapon skins which require black lion tickets. Sure, I don’t have to buy them, but it’s a disservice to the customer (and I think to the artists themselves) that they’re allowed to do this. I’m just in a way challenging the artists who design these weapons to be a little mindful of the throwaways they put into each set. Gets a bit tedious.

You don’t know what “reskin” means if you think the Dominator Bow is a reskin of the Ascended Bow.

Reskin means they either literally took a model and put new image maps on top of it and presented it as a new creation or heavily recycled the model with only a few tweaks to the overall shape. The first can be seen when Anet did this with most of the Eye of the North armors in GW1. The later is most obvious in the Chaos Sword which is nearly the same model as the Krytan Sword. The hand guard is different but the blade and grip line up nearly perfectly.

The Dominator bow is neither a reskin nor a recycled asset. It’s simply a bow that shares both the same “bow shape” all long bows do and has the silly little shield thing that Anet occasionally likes to put on their bows to make them more complicated looking.

Both the Auric Longbow and the Hero’s Longbow from WvW leagues also have the little shield thing.

The Dominator bow may share a similar overall silhouette, but it matches the theme of the set perfectly and is really nothing more than a coincidence.

(sure, you can use fire to fight fires, but the game doesn’t employ any firefighters that I’ve seen)

There’s entire families of plants that can’t complete their reproductive cycles without wildfires.

Many areas also use controlled burns to clear grassland and replenish the soil.

It’s the big reason I don’t wear that hat or the celebration cap. But I guess it would be a problem to put a hair style on it that fits 5 different races and both sexes.

It’s a trivial task to smoosh in the vertices to make any current hair look like there is a hat on top of it.

The primary issue is probably focused on the fact that Anet likely doesn’t have a system coded in that can reference what hair you have normally and then load in the proper “smooshed hair” to match it when you wear a helmet/hat.

All they have is a toggle that tells the game to hide or show the hair based on whether the headgear would need it. Hence, we have circlets that show hair but the launch day baseball cap gives us a chrome dome.

So they can suspend their developers and get 6 more that would be able to work in that department. At the end of the day – they would still be paying their emploees the same amount of money.

Implying you can just hire competent content creators off the street like that… -_-

Exactly. Anet is doing what they think is best for the good of the game, not the good of what is likely a very small percentage of the player base. It’s a business decision. They have as much responsibility to the majority than the do to any minority, no matter what was printed on the box.

You can’t seriously be implying that the LS would somehow suffer dramatically were these 6 people to stay on Legendary Crafting duty…

The only way this could be true is if said people were Anet’s best and brightest, which seems implausible given that the crafting system is a short stint of lore based scavenger hunting, followed by massive gold sink that is simply meant to hoover up a perceived material surplus.

We would have gotten true quests and content, rather than a system where several of the series 1 precursors are actually cheaper to simply buy off the TP than to actually craft.

I think he made a lot of good points and I hope Mike watches the whole thing if he gets the chance.

I think it’s pretty worrying that they’d prefer to cancel something that people were promised (Legendaries) instead of pulling some of the 70 people working on the next expansion (which doesn’t have a set release date) in order to make sure everything was shipped properly.

It makes it seem like the next expansion is more important to them than making sure their core game is working, we have enough content and everything is balanced.

Why are they working on a new xpac so soon ( i get that it takes a long while) but i would think (the first 6 months to maybe 1 year)working on the content updates and finishing those first would be a priority. and then reflecting back on what worked and what didn’t and designing better things would be the way to go.

Yeah, I really agree with you on this. It just doesn’t make any sense to me to start a new expansion when the previous one still needs so much work…

Different people do different jobs.

Much of the art team need to have something to do. If you are an environment asset artist then you need to be making environmental assets. Unless LS3.0 is in all new maps like 2.0, they will need to be working on the new xpack. Otherwise, Anet is paying people to sit on their hands and no self publishing game company is going to do that.

A HUGE part of any content addition is the conceptualization stage. You can’t start making assets until you know what the content will be and look like, nor can you code enemy behavior or events until you know what those will be.

Much of the finessing and finishing of HoT would be in the hands of coders, many of whom may not have anything to be doing right now in the current stage Xpac2 is in.

TLDR: Their post was grossly ambiguous as to what stage they are in and thus it’s not very reasonable to assume they are mismanaging their teams. “In Development” can mean basically Day 1 all the way to Launch Day.

Allow custom head-pieces with outfits?

While we’re at this, can we please have dyes bound to the outfit like it works with actual armor instead of to the menu?

The ability to swap looks on the go is made rather pointless if I have to stop and redo my dye scheme every time. It’s made even worse when the people making the outfits seem to have no standard with how their materials work.

I have to use the darkest dyes available to make the Sniper outfit not look like a blown out neon mess. The same dyes make other outfits look so dark, details become hard to make out.

I doubt their future expansions will see as many units sold as HoT did.

If only that it’s unlikely that the game is gaining more players than it loses on average. In other words, there are simply less people actively playing by the time this new xpac is released.

Anet clearly has no problems locking future content behind xpac walls along with making supposed “horizontal progression” elite specs into pure powercreep.

This simple fact means that, eventually, nearly every active player will pony up the money. Even people who don’t care about PvE at all have pretty much had to upgrade to stay competitive in PvP/WvW.

HoT wasn’t a sidestory DLC pack, it was a hard “buy now or be left in the dust” near mandatory upgrade for every mode.

The only thing they will really see less of is people pre-purchasing on pure hype alone.

Airship pass - no return?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Substance E.4852

The ones that have the ability to return, moves you from PvE to outside PvE (WvW, PvP, instances). They return you to your previous PvE spot once you’ve gone outside PvE and you go back. If you move from PvE to another spot on the PvE map, it doesn’t have the ability to remember your previous PvE location and waypoint you back.

You can also add the Guild Hall to this list. You can “Leave Hall” via the guild menu to return back to your previous location.

So if you have a repair anvil and the scribing station unlocked that’s easy repairs, banking and a basic merchant.

You can also add Home Portal Stones to the list.

That being said, I don’t understand the need for Airship Passes: there’s everything you need in you home Borderland, except the Mystic Forge, it’s free, and you do return to your previous location when you leave the map.

Just make sure you don’t stay too long there not to mess with the outnumbered buff (one player won’t change anything, but if many do that…).

There actually is a mystic forge in the home keep of your BL. (:

The only thing the home borderland doesn’t have is a vendor for cooking.

It’s probably an oversight, though, one I doubt will ever be addressed.

The Data Anet has on player numbers and habits would tell them where the problems are far more accurately that a few malcontents screaming on the forums.

Lol clearly their data read “People hate dungeons and pretty much everyone wants raids”.

Must be the same kind of data that told them to add a new gear tier to the game and let WvW stagnation hemorrhage players from the game…

I’m just annoyed at the title ‘raid’.
having never played wow, I would expect a ‘raid’ to be more of wvw zergs sweeping the map.
these raids are more of trials. or gauntlets.

Think of the word “Raid” as in “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and it makes more sense.

disadvantage not having Hot in wvw?

in WvW

Substance E.4852

Elite specializations are just another build option. They’re not necessarily better than the existing builds, they just present different play style and build opportunities.
If you’re running a good build you should still be able to counter most things that people can throw at you. Understanding the elite specs would be a smart place to understand, but the only disadvantage you’re at is that you can’t use an elite spec (which is only a disadvantage if you wanted to use one).

Totally false. Elite specializations were advertised as “just another build option” but the reality is that having them makes you significantly stronger.

In sPvP? Yes, undoubtedly. Anet was shameless in their intentional power creep to get the pvp crowd to purchase the xpac.

In WvW things aren’t so black and white. Some builds are better but some still rely heavily on base skills and traits to the point that not having the elites won’t make a huge impact.

You’re still going to be using a staff on Ele for example.

The game is no where near popular enough for it to remembered as any watershed though it is a blatant example of what not to do when running an online game.

If WoW ever pulls something similar, then maybe, but Blizzard tends to like money so it’s probably not as likely.*

But how do you fix population imbalanceing beyond cutting off the game when “you” are not on? I realy do not think its up to Anet to fix this problem more of an over all gw2 community to make it work better.

The most obvious solution is to fold together low tier servers.

Anet won’t do this because people still logically assume that server pop = total player pop like it does in virtually every other MMO.

Folding in servers signals that the total game population is too small and they need to shutdown servers to compensate. Whether it’s true or not is largely irrelevant.

It’s what other games do in such a situation and Anet would have a nearly impossible task of convincing people that it’s not what’s happening here.
