Specific Game Mode
<PvP in general, not specific to either WvW or sPvP>

Proposal Overview
<Change Skirmishing VII Carnivorous Appetite to “Pet and Player gain health on critical hit”, reduce healing to flat 200 and remove scaling with healing power>

Goal of Proposal
<To allow for the potential for sustain and survivability in Rangers built for Power and Critical hits not currently found in game.>

Proposal Functionality
<Currently, one major issue with the Ranger class when specced for power builds is the lack of sustain. We have many reasons to spec for high crit chance, but little to help such a build survive combat in the way a build built around healing power and nature’s voice can. This change would lend sustain to power builds while the crit requirement would ensure that it would not strengthen already powerful regen tank builds that neither build for critical chance, nor use the Skirmishing trait line at all.>

Associated Risks
<I feel the high critical chance and inability to scale with healing power would ensure that it doesn’t become too powerful although I obviously lack the ability to test such an idea. Such a trait would make it impractical to take Agility Training which is often necessary to enable pets to hit kiting targets.>

Thanks for that. It helps all of us to understand that our opinions are “invalid”

Glad I could help! Maybe next time, you can come up with a better argument than “Its clunky!”, becuase by that logic, every skill in the game with a cast time is "clunky’

Also, bad opinions, and bad arguments are two totally different things. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, no matter how good or bad. But, if your argument sucks, I am going to say something!

lol, yes, like the argument that the pet having stealth and protection is so powerful that it warrants a nerf to get rid of the cast time? Will we suddenly become OP if it’s an instant? Will that 1 less second of casting catapult the regen-tank to god-like status? Will the pet become too OP? Will all the non-existent people who kill the pet first rage quit forever because it has 1 second less to wait for protection and stealth?

There needs to be a real, clear consequence to buffing it with no counter, not just some vague claim that it’s “already good”.

  • 1-Handed Sword performance improvement in areas such as player control

We really need confirmation from Anet on the state of this. We know they have been poking around (or so they say) with it for a few months now and the announcement that they figured out how to force pets to override animations makes me think they may have solved the problem or at least figured out what they need to do to fix it.

It’d just be a waste to harp (and harp we will) on something that may already be fixed or in the process of getting fixed.

Infinite Endurance in WvW

I also wouldn’t try to use this to one’s advantage. Exploiting a bug to use perma endurance, even one that costs you the ability to use skills, will almost absolutely get you banned.

I don’t know what you mean if you’re implying that I used it to my own advantage.

It gives no advantage. Capturing, killing, roaming, supporting or gaining any points is impossible. Sure, you can run with the zerg and get points for capturing towers but that isn’t an advantage because you miss out on the exp from fights and the loot bags.

If you have infinite dodge, you could conceivably use it to troll a circle for an absurd amount of time if you can avoid getting immob’d. Imagine how annoying it’d be to be unable to cap a camp because some guy is just rolling all over the place ‘loling’ at your attempts to hit him.

There’s enough going on in WvW that anything that breaks established game rules can be used to gain an advantage in some way.

What do you want to do in wvw? Do you want to roam? You’d probably have more success on the thief.
If zerging is your thing then ranger is about the worst by a long shot right now and into the foreseeable future so I would say that it’s the wrong choice for that. It will work, but we don’t do anything in a zerg that another class doesn’t do better. Our best zerg build is just a flat weaker warrior with none of the team utility.

Let’s hope that CDI works. Otherwise, we may be in trouble.

According to Dulfy those notes are fake. The poster just took the currently known changes to make them look legit and made up the rest.

Not just dulfy, Anet personally stated those notes were fake, something they have never done before now. Meaning it’s most likely fake.

Man…People must really hate Ranger and want this thread locked and trashed? Can we get on topic with things that actually concern Ranger Balance, and not stuff that is obviously fake?

(on a side note, and partially on topic….. Ranger CDI should be started tomorow!)

lol the only other thing to talk about that hasn’t been said elevnty billion times already is taking bets as to whether the CDI will happen on Monday or get pushed back again.

So they were lying when we asked for confirmation of the validity of the other leaks and sad nothing. Did they mean to say something, anything? Was that what they were lying about?

Looks sound, but I would be worried about the rather shallow health pool when fighting other condition tanks when you have no perma-regen. Our condition builds usually win be attrition more than dps but the confusion and torment might make up for that.

Has anyone done the Norn heart task in Wayfarer Hills where you’re turned in to a Snow Leopard? If so, you know how grossly stiff the combat feels. It’s like lifting your paw to swipe at a rabbit takes the same effort it would to tip a min-van. How about make the pets not so sluggish? I feel bad for their AI having to struggle to do any kind of attack. Being able to swipe, bite or shoot at an opponent while moving would be a massive improvement. Instead of having to first target their opponent, then follow them, then attack them, they can instead target and attack while chasing them.

That is how mob AI in this game works. That is what our pets are tied to. That is the code they’ll have to trash to rewrite the entire pet AI.

I’m pretty sure just increasing the range of melee pet skills so they leap like we do with our sword auto would fix this without heavy AI reprogramming that will probably never happen.

It’s the difference between ours or a wild moa and the Mesmer Moa form.

Barrage has 12 pulses at five hits each. Not 12 hits. Increasing the pulses would only make it more impractical in WvW. Better to halve the pulses and double the damage and cripple application to increase it’s spike while combating retaliation overload without actually increasing the overall damage. 40hits x 350retal hurts a lot…

I’m really beginning to think this is all a farce. Either they don’t really want to fix the ranger or they know they painted themselves into a corner and don’t want to admit it for as long as they can.

I’m half expecting them to come out of their private testing thinking “After internal testing, we’ve come to the conclusion that the Ranger is actually in a pretty good place and have decided to go with the runner up in the poll”.

Or decide that we just need more spirits. Either way…

Why would you make the longbow the AE weapon? It has a single AE. You could remove barrage and make the Longbow the perfect sniping/burst weapon for a power Ranger.

Plus if Barrage is made a utility instead of a weapon skill its damage and utility can be improved and become viable for multiple builds.

Then if you need additional AE for the class we could finally make traps live up to the tree they’re in and have each do ~200 AE damage on activation instead of the current ~50 they do.

Traps would need to hit as hard as the old storm spirit active to be worth the cooldowns and the utility slots on a power build if they had their damage increased to be useful outside a condition build.

It’s our garbage AoE damage on the few skills that even have it that really holds us back in WvW.

Because melee is always going to be better than ranged and our only other melee weapon makes combining raw DPS and dodging/kiting impossible because it roots you on the autoattack. GS looks good because we have no other alternatives, not because it actually is good. Try the GS on the warrior or Guardian and you’ll see what a “good” GS feels like.

Guardian GS isn’t as good as ranger GS imo.
I also agree on the stow pet thing…it would give us a chance to be more useful in situations where the pet dies too easily. Maybe put a timer on it so we can’t switch too often ?

I nearly spit my coffee on my monitor when I read this. What exactly is better about Ranger GS than guardian????? Guardian is nearly attached to its GS its so useful

Rangers are pretty attached to GS too for the same reason of useful. You have our only constant source of cleave, our strongest hitting weapon skill, a mobility skill, and our only block skill.

Er, I think those Rangers are attached to GS because they hate the sword AA?

That and the lack of a gap closer.

We are playing a fantasy genre mmorpg and you have concerns for realism, please just get out now as realism isn’t going to be a part of the design.

It is so far realistic that it doesn’t bent the physics too much. Water still floating downhill, Arrows still get blocked by obstacles. But they don’t get blocked by someone screaming at them.

It’s called magic. Further explanation shouldn’t really be required in a fantasy RPG.
A game that sells 33 gold bricks for 1 gold coin and has falling 15 feet do more damage than a gunshot or being struck by lightning has thrown realism into the fires of Mt Doom and never looked back.

And yet, you still haven’t bothered to answer my questions either, why should I bother with yours?

If you think advancing your skills in a game like Eve makes it a VP game, you’re fooling yourself. Why not post that question in the Eve forums and see what response you get.

And yes, casuals chasing carrots. GW2 is the crowning achievement of the carrot-chasing casual. The Achievement system, the mini’s, the dyes, the map completions, the skins, etc…all carrots. The one’s that don’t go after carrots much, unless you count challenge as a carrot, are the pvpers and hard-core gamers.

Bubbles

That’s a very limited definition of rpg. I can log into GW2, role-play for months, and never advance my character in levels if I want. Old-school D&D is just one approach to role-play, there are thousands of ways to do it.

Oh, and I haven’t lost the argument bud. Nor am I ignoring him.

Because you never asked a question? Just wanted to make a couple snarky one liners and not actually be called on it.

Apparently you define a casual as someone who has an inordinate amount of time to spend in game and are obsessively goal oriented , while a hardcore is someone who doesn’t and isn’t. Not sure where you’re getting your definitions. If your idea of EvE as HP is any indication, perhaps from there?

To be fair, you can’t grind skills in EvE. They are trained one by one, for as long as each tier takes. You don’t even need to be logged in to do it, just that your account is active.

While it’s VP in the sense that you do get stronger over time, it’s not the same as VP that requires active grinding to achieve the progression and therefor doesn’t limit your in game actions (which will mostly be grinding money anyway but for a completely different reason)

you do realize that the male sets show just as much skin? its an armor whose purpose is to show off the blue godly skin. I dont really like most of the design, but it has little to do with how much skin its showing

Male and female chests represent entirely different things in western culture and to imply otherwise insults the intelligence of everyone present.

to be honest, i see more women with cleavage showing than I see dudes wearing clothes like that.
And what just because your part of western culture may want to impose a more puritanical view, doesnt really make it any better than the sexualized part of westernized society

personally i believe in the freedom to choose, just cause i dont like something doesnt mean it shouldnt exist. Its an option, nothing more nothing less.

Do you also run around telling random women they should dress how you think they should?

Nice that you assume I find it offensive so you could argue a stance I hadn’t taken. Straw man activate doodeedooo!!!

My point was that a bare male chest in pop culture means either the guy was doing hard work and had to take off his clothes because he was so drenched in man sweat or it was destroyed by bad guy bullets while he was busy being the hero and refusing to die, hard or otherwise. Consequently, a bare female chest almost always means that a sexual situation is about to happen, is happening, or just finished happening. Rarely does it ever mean the same as a man’s bare chest.

I think it is very important in this CDI that….
People post serious suggestions that Anet could actually use and would want to design around.

Suggestions like remove pets will not even be considered as the design goal for A Net is to make ranger a 2v1 Class.

Suggestions that enhance a 2v1 class concept will go much farther.

For example, my suggestion will be focused on giving ranger greater CC so that we can help the pets hit more reliably.

A good idea to think about is how can we make ranger a true 2v1 class so the opponent actually has to think about what it wants to try to take down, the pet or the ranger. Right now the choice is far to obvious, the Ranger.

The only way for the Ranger to be an actual 2v1 class is if we put out 101% or more the DPS of other classes when attacking in tandem with the pet. Any less than that is simply 0.75+0.25v1 .

This simply won’t happen though so the best hope is to get them to give most of the damage to the ranger and make the pet a small added bonus, not our left arm and one of our kidneys.

Levelling from 1-80 is vertical progression, how come you’re OK with that? And don’t say you are referring only to endgame because Ascended is a stepping stone just like levelling is, neither are actual endgame content and you don’t even have to do Ascended there’s no real reason to it doesn’t actually benefit you in anyway.

I think you just like to complain.

You get to 80 naturally by just playing the game and doing DE’s along the way to each new Personal Story point. Never have I felt like I had to stop the narrative and kill 50 Ogres or w/e before I was allowed to move on and continue the story. That’s the difference.

The levels are a system to keep people from going where they either logically should be able to go yet because they story hasn’t gotten there, or to places that a person fresh out of bootcamp wouldn’t be able to survive in (say an area controlled by powerful monsters that you have never encountered before and shouldn’t be able to just mow down right after meeting them). It also gives folks a a sense of accomplishment regardless of how real it is.

You should re-read what I suggest – by giving up on gs evade on #1, you’re getting evades on both #3 and #4(counter-attack is more of a self-stun when it happens right now). Also, you still get the same duration on block, I think you didnt really read/understand and stopped at what you dislike, see the full picture.

Spamming #1 for random evades is not what I consider a good design, however 2 evades on demand would be very welcome, and I feel it is the direction the game have to go for every mode, less random, spammy and passive stuff, dont you agree?

(I edited my post to mention your opinion about GS#1)

Switch to sword if you want “on demand” evade. GS is one of the best ranger weapons right now…

I think 90 of you are pve or pvp players. Pve and pvp are 1v1 or 1v2. Powering the pet and upgrading the AI ae not sollutions in WvW. Pets cant listen TS, keep up with the dudes, save skills and use them in time. Pets select a single target and attack that. In large fights we not fight against single targets but whole servers. Pets will never work in wvw. Pets must be optional.

Which won’t happen, ever. It sucks, I know, but that is the reality that we have to work with.
Changing the ratio of damage between the Player:Pet, altering useless/underwhelming utilities and traits, improving team support, increasing strength/access to AoE’s, and giving power builds viable sustain will go a long way to making us better in zergs without having to remove the pet entirely.

I have very little faith that they will do any of this, but those are the ways to make the ranger a better zergling without getting rid of the pet entirely.

The game isn’t perfect, it’s far from it in many aspects. Withholding negative critique isn’t being polite, nor does it help improve things that are very much in need of fixes and attention.

People wouldn’t be giving critique if they didn’t like the game and want it to be better, they would just leave.

As much as complaining about asinine issues in games can be annoying, it’s a far cry from complaining that people don’t like something as much as one does or that they have a negative opinion of something one likes.

This is why when the CDI does start it’s important for ANet to tell us what kind of feedback we should be giving. If they aren’t going to be able to resolve the pet AI problems, they need to tell us so we can propose alternative solutions or start discussing how to phase pets out.

From Day 1 we should know if we’re simply wasting our time discussing the pet issues this class has.

Exactly. Thou I would rephase that to “discussing fixing AI for pets” is a waste of time, because it’s not the only way to solve the problem with pets.
There is more then one way to skin a cat.

There are, but most of them seem as equally improbable as a fix to pet AI. When Anet comes out and deliberately says they won’t increase our control over the pet so as to not overwhelm new players (keep ridding that casual gravy train) it really hurts the possibility of real fixes to a system that needs heavy work.

Rank 30 WvW Required for Gift of Battle Grind

Are people seriously complaining about this?
Seriously?

They are either all newbies, extremely self entitled players, or oldbies with very poor memory.

You have always had to WvW to get the Gifts. Before achievement chests came out you had to actually kill people to get Badges of honor and they used to drop a lot less frequently then they do now. Anet created the chests and suddenly you got showered in badges even if you never, ever set foot in the WvW maps. Anet decided that people should once again have to actually fight to get the Gift of BATTLE (crazy, iknowrite?) and came up with a very easy to achieve goal to compensate the ease of getting badges of honor.

God help us all if anet introduces a method for crafting a precursor and it requires any actual work.

Do the developers really want feedback? If so, then I have a story for them.

Before I played GW2 I used to play Rift. The PvP there was not as good as GW2, but it was decent…at first.

In the beginning the PvP was decent. Then the developers tried to balance the PvP.

And so they buffed warriors and thieves.
And the nerfed warlocks and pyromancers.

And so the game persisted. Players clamored about the imbalance that existed, and even offered suggestions on how to improve the balance.

And the developer response was the same: we have to be mindful of scope (though the changes were typically analogous to changing one or two talents). And they did nothing. And warriors and thieves rampaged over the battlegrounds.

That was about 2 years ago.

The other day I swung into the Rift forums and saw the same complaints. Nothing changed.

Today, in GW2, I see warriors are overpowered and still dominating the meta, as exemplified by teams like Cheese Mode winning tournaments with double warrior.
Thieves are the apex roamer class, pushing out Elementalists and Mesmers from the meta.

And I see ArenaNet doing nothing to change this.

I believe history will repeat itself.

As long as people keep buying gems don’t expect anything to ever really change.

Makes one wonder why you still bother if believe nothing is goign to change. Just for the record, the ones complaining like us are generally not the ones that prop up the game.

Things will change somewhat, but major sweeping changes don’t seem like they will happen or will happen so slowly people will just start to lose interest before they are fully realized. I firmly believe that this games B2P model is it’s biggest saving grace at the moment.

I mean, it’s been almost 2 yeas and we still don’t have a new spvp game mode. WvW got a new map and it’s just more of the “zerg the local” game play we’ve always had.

If Anet had a real competitor that made them afraid to lose customers we’d probably see a lot more innovation and change than we have been with their only real drain being general player bemusement.

Wildstar will give GW2 a run for their money if they don’t fix something before launch. I’m not saying it’s going to kill the game, but I will jump on that gravy train if something isn’t done to GW2 by it’s launch (this summer i think).

I really hope it does. There’s nothing out right now that is a direct competitor to GW2 and as such, they have no real incentive to work hard because they have no one to lose customers to. I was hopeful about TESOL but it looks to be a pile of kitten so that won’t happen any time soon.

I suspect its half the reason we never get any real info on their future plans for the game and they never seem to release anything that isn’t just some short term attempt at keeping people logging in and maybe buying gems while they’re here.

Will One-handed Weapons be compensated?

If you look at history, what was going to do more damage to you, a two handed sword with more weight to it, or a light cutlass or foil? The kitten things were known to cleave men in two, overhand style.

If you actually look at history, firearms made all martial weapons of war obsolete so we should all just be using pistols and rifles but that would make for a really lame fantasy game.

Upscale Ranger hit me for 17.4k Maul today

That 17k maul came at the expense of full zerker gear and two long cooldown utilites all aimed at one attack. It’s basically a thief if they could back stab you 2-3 times at once but with only one attack and had to forfeit all stealth ability to do it.

Mandatory pets are bad.

I have to agree. I rolled a ranger, and when I dropped my first trap, and foe never came near it because they were too busy chasing my pet, they lasted another 5 lvls before they were deleted. In gw1 I never used a pet..I found the compulsory pet in gw2 just annoyed me more than anything else.

The scope in ranger previously was good;
Interrupter
condition pressure
choice of short, medium,long range
Bunny thumpers
Trappers

It really feels to me that rangers took a large step backwards in gw2. They’re not even the best profession with bow..if the ranger isn’t the best given profession with bow, well that spoke volumes to me. It is why you see so many rangers in higher content using axe/warhorn.

Don’t forget rangers had spirits that actually played a HUGE role in combat, it was a matter of “is your team adapted to this effect?” If yes, it was a huge advantage, if not it normally screwed your build over big time, sometimes to the point where it’s useless.

Not to mention pet builds in Gw1 were actually scary, your pet was essentially a personal warrior… In gW2 they’re nothing more than a nuisance

Edge of Extinction pre-nerf in Fort Aspenwood was the greatest thing ever. Never has the Ranger been so stupidly OP lol.

Ranger Balance [Post CDI]

Do you remember complaints about Ranger viability before Longbow, Shortbow, and quickening zephyr nerfs? No? That’s because there really wasn’t a balance issue compared to other classes.

In fact we were having fun killing things, just like the other professions.

Back then all we complained about was the pets.

The LB is stronger now than it has ever been post-beta. I do agree on the QZ/petswap and SB nerfs though. The very fact that people even defended the SB nerf as a good thing made me ashamed to be playing the same class.

Epic Loot at the end of Living Story?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I’m not sure how Arena.net could implement an “epic” reward for the finale that wouldn’t righteously kitten off a very large group of people.

Do you just give an “epic” reward for the final meta achievement? Be ready for the fury of the meta hunters screaming that they deserve something more awesome than those “casuals” for being such dedicated players.

Create a meta-meta-achievement where completing [x] amount of living story meta achievements earns you some amazing? Well, put on your flak jackets, because here come the masses complaining that Arena.net AGAIN has pulled a 180 on the “play how you want” promise; how they are either encouraging “grindy play” or not informing their players of this great reward… etc… etc… and how it’s not fair and not right and oh God the game is going to burn in hell…

Nope. I think the best course of action is for the meta-reward for the end of the “season” not be anything particularly more amazing than the others.

Then again, this is the game company that thought a limited use finisher and some merchant fodder was an appropriate reward for winning wvw seasons so we all have to remember that Anet “epic loot” may not necessarily = more generally accepted definition of “epic loot”.

For only 2k gems, you can purchase a box of greens! Contains 3 greens to celebrate the end of the living story.

Greens may be randomly be replaced with fun mystery tonics.

THE Power Build That Works

A zerg warrior with none of the hammer stun, party buffs, dogged march, and less life and armor…

May or may not work but then why not just run a warrior? The GS does more damage, it has more mobility with GS/S-WH, and Healsig offers much better sustain.

Purposeful severing of ties to GW1?

What doesn’t make sense to me, is the logistics behind Scarlet’s attack on Lions Arch, or why Lions Arch doesn’t kittening bother reinforcing it’s defenses ever.

Lions Arch has been attacked/invaded how many times? How many new defenses have been added in that time?

We can go back through time experience historical events, but we can’t muster the resources to put a flak cannon or two along any of the walls? LA is some how stuck in the past with Trebs and Arrow carts as their only defense? The city itself is literally free for the taking, the Fortress of Jahai had stronger defenses 250 years ago. If a Dragon wanted, it could stay at a high altitude and rain down hell wiping the city out within a days time.

As for Scarlet, everything that she does is full plot holes, if you’re at the point as a writer where you have to scream “MAGIC!” 30 or 40 times to get a story across, it’s safe to say you’re not very good at telling a story.

Well they are in the process of doing an asspull* and claiming she’s insane because something is posessing/corrupting her from the time she spent in the chamber so they will just blame it all on that.

It’s so obvious I really can’t imagine how the staff isn’t just giggling to them selves when they plug all this into the game.

Opening Strike Unique #1 Skills Idea

in Ranger

I like the idea of expanding on a unique mechanic, but things like aegis, protection and long duration blocks/invuln greatly reduce the potency of an ability that can only ever be used on one very specific attack per fight unless heavily traited otherwise.

We would also need more access to stealth or a rework of how Remorseless functions.

You sound like you have a corrupted .dat file.

The repair method may work but if it doesn’t you will have to re-download the whole .dat file. When this happened to me I had to restore an older backup of the file.

Ranger Balance [Post CDI]

This is how a bow user is suppose to operate. They’re meant to kite:

http://youtu.be/DGiRlGyuMkk?t=30s

I’m more convinced than ever that this class should get a Fast Hand trait like warriors. I’d actually argue that should be no swap cool down for this game across all classes but that’s for another thread. Again, every class has gap closers, range, and CC options. There’s zero need to disable kiting as it’s a L2P issue, not a balance one.

Notice also the channel time of the skills. Fast and furious, or slow and powerful. This is what’s missing from the ranger longbow along with the lack of CC. Lightning reflex doesn’t cut it with the long cool downs.

Our ranger looks so slow and clunky by comparison it’s kind of sad. Also, +5 to them for not tethering the stereotypical AI “pet”. Nice to see some game devs are aware it doesn’t actually work as well as it does on paper and definitely doesn’t work in a game with no collision.

On the otherhand, that ranger in the video is just ridiculous. Is he using a machine gun or a bow?

That is the one thing I love about Asia’s mmo combat is that it’s all stupidly over the top. Everyone moves crazy fast or has absurd attack animations and equipment. It makes it all a lot more fantastical and enjoyable. It’s one of the things GW2 lacks (unless you play thief) and it becomes dreadfully obvious when you use the same weapon sets for 1000+ hours.

Good thing GW2 combat is not an Asian MMO combat system.

I would rather not have ranger be degraded into a flying acrobat with a machine gun.

lol, yes, much more honor in being tethered to a defunct AI and having to rely on cheese passive regen builds to win all our fights.
