Caithe is also the one the said the thing to Cadeyrn that finally made him snap and go make the Nightmare Court. She told him that “you are either Firstborn, or you are simply Sylvari” when he was trying to speak to the Pale Tree about whether or not Ventari’s Tablet was a necessity to the Sylvari as a whole. To quote the thing:

“Have we not already lost ourselves, Mother? We are not centaurs or humans. Let me destroy the tablet, and we will see what it truly means to be sylvari.” There was no answer. As dawn rose and bathed the clearing in gold, Cadeyrn realized that the tree would say no more.

“She will not hear you.” The quiet voice was feminine, but it was not the tree who spoke. Spinning, Cadeyrn readied himself for battle but froze when he saw Caithe, cold and still, standing in the last shadows of night. “She will not hear you,” Caithe repeated.

“I am the first of my generation—” he began, raising his voice in argument.

Caithe shrugged and interrupted, “Why should she care? She has thousands of children now, Cadeyrn. You are either firstborn…or you are simply sylvari.”

A storm gathered upon his features. “I will never be one among many, Caithe. Not even to the Pale Tree,” he vowed, storming away. “I will make you hear me, Mother, like it or not. When I am finished and you are free at last, then I will be first in your heart!”

Caithe lingered in silence and watched him go.

You know it’s odd when you read those bits on the wiki, they shed The Nightmare Court in a whole new light and the Pale Tree in quite a different one. Not such a loving mother but more of one that plays favorites and doesn’t have all the answers. It’s to note if you go to the link and read all the way through that The Pale Tree stops talking at one point because she doesn’t know how to answer Cadeyrn.

Where do the Asurans get theirs? Where does the pact get theirs for the endless destructions over and over again in Orr? Where do the farmers in Queensdale continuously pull their hay from when the event is constantly failed and they’re all burned? Come to think of it where does a deer hide a longbow to give to you after you kill it? How do you harvest a blue dye from a carrot?

You can dismiss these all as not being a part of the living story but honestly they’re part of the every day game so they hold just as much meaning if not more than the LS does considering they’ll still be happening long after Scarlet is gone.

If you’re going to start bringing up these “inconsistencies” you might as well bring them all up. It’s a game, stop trying to make EVERYTHING make sense, the world doesn’t actually exist, they can take whichever liberties they want.

Just as an aside, I didn’t say Sylvari are dragon minions. I said Mordremoth has influence over them that has been shut away purposefully, most likely by the Pale Tree (and I also believe Caithe and Faolain have something to do with this. The “big secret”). That’s different to just being a minion.

Yeah but Malyk is a Sylvari that exists outside of both the Pale Tree and the Dream and comes from a whole other tree and yet isn’t influenced by a dragon..So where’s the explanation for that?

I just. I don’t think it is. But eh we’ll find out at some point.

All jokes aside (which is hard to do at this point) exactly what will happen to Zommoros? He’s literally imprisoned within the Mystic Forge but as we know Djinn are very powerful, so will he be freed during this time? How will they transport him? Build a new forge in Vigil’s Keep and he somehow “magically” gets there? No pun intended. kitten I said no jokes.

I don’t know about you guys but I really hope there is an event involved in kicking butt with Zommoros. If he considers the Mystic Forge his thing to protect, anet could make this epic.

As soon as my friend told me the name of this LS I started laughing uncontrollably, i’m glad to see that more people got the reference.

I don’t know what’s more upsetting to me, the fact that Evon is running for his life (Cause I quite like him and he better not die) or the fact that he’s running for his life in the opposite direction of what was once the Trading Post area in LA.

That’s the thing about Trahearne though, he does seem wooden and dull but I don’t think it’s because he wasn’t meant to. If you read about the Sylvari especially the secondborn one Cadeyrn (you know that one that founded the Nightmare Court) there’s an instance where when talking about what the Asura did to Malomedies, Trahearne is reacting in the same way that Cadeyrn is. Which speaks volumes to what Trahearne’s true character is like, I don’t think he much enjoys his Wyld Hunt to be quite honest but that’s just my opinion.

See that line leads me to believe that it’s not Mordremoth, it seems that the Dragons after a while can awake themselves just fine without any help from the outside. I think it’s something different, something exclusively from the mists. But at this point my train of thought gets caught up in all kinds of things and I can’t make heads or tails of what i mean.

But then there’s that whole, whatever she saw had to have been inside her all along…so I just don’t know.

There is a Sylvari you meet during one of the personal storylines of the Sylvari playable character that goes by the name of Malyk. He is a Sylvari that is from another tree and knows nothing of The Dream or The Nightmare Court, and to put it short, he’s a happy medium between the two, seeming to have an affinity for both good things and greyer things. Most importantly however, he disproves the theory that the Pale Tree was meant to be an elder dragon minion and was “freed” or “purified” by Ventari’s Tablet, because his tree has no tablet and is apparently not breeding dragon minions.

There are, unfortunately, quite a few cases where little lines in-game will contradict each other, and even more where the devs will contradict those lines. In this particular case, I’d take the direct statement from the Lore and Continuity guy over a line that for all we know might’ve been written by a random member of the writing team before the big-wigs had fully settled on what happened to the gods.

Yeah for the most part that’s what I will probably do, but there’s always that little part of me that just gets ocd about things like this.

I’m utterly confused about the location of the 6 gods at this time due to the fact that there is a direct contradiction in what Jeff Grubs says in his Dolyak Express interview and what an NPC, Priestess Rhie, states in the game about the 6 human gods and the mists. In the interview Jeff Grub states that the gods have pulled back to the mists to leave the humans to figure out things for themselves for a while:

Q: Are the Six [gods] really gone or not? Their power is still very much present. Players can call upon the gods’ power with prayers, NPC priests can summon Reapers of Grenth etc., and their statues are still stuffed with energy. So if they left, why are their power still here?
Jeff Grubb: The human gods still exist, and their power is still felt within Tyria. However, they have pulled back into the mists, leaving the humans to stand (or fall) on their own merits. There has been a tendency for the human gods to, um, meddle with their worshippers a bit much, and in the wake of the final battle of Abaddon, they have been trying to cut back. Also, the destruction of the big A and his replacement with Kormir in the Pantheon resolved one of their ties with physical contact with Tyria. So there are ties, but you just can’t ring them up to take on the Elder Dragons.

It’s the gate hub in Lion’s Arch the reason why it looks different in alignment than the current set up is because either A. Whatever Scarlet is looking for comes through the island there and massively kittens it up or B. All of the bombing you hear in the background towards the end of the trailer attributes to them being massively kittened up.

They look misaligned because they’ve been pushed to and fro due to the destruction. In the photo you can see where the ramps have been utterly destroyed to the two gates.

If your player is in the Order of Whispers you get additional dialogue:

To say that dialogue doesn’t hint at a possible sixth race is rather odd to me considering Anet’s affinity for things coming in sets of “sixes”. I think it’s fair to regard it as a stretch but to write it off as not a possibility altogether seems a bit brash.

i think you are a bit testy because people are coming down on your villian hard. please take the time to be introspective about this. no one believes you can fix this story at the very end for 2 reasons. 1.) It is incredibly hard to do and violates several rules of good writing and 2.) your previous attempts at telling this story have fallen flat and no one has faith in your ability moving forward. The best i am hoping for is you wrap the scarlet story up and kill her off and we can all forget about her like they did to jar jar.

i don’t speak for everyone but don’t fool yourself into thinking only a vocal minority on the forums doesn’t like scarlet or the story so far just ask in map chat its about 20-1 for dislikes to likes feel free to ask yourself don’t take my word for it. well the first rule i can think of he violated is not to put backstory and character development at the end of the story because this leads to one of the mortal sins of storytelling your audience stops caring. This is why pacing is so important and why even bobby has acknowledged the failure. He just still thinks he can fix it but most reasonable people would disagree and see its too late and hope we can move forward with the lessons learned after the content they made months ago is put out and without scarlet around to remind everyone of the poor job they did at the beginning.

That’ s not a rule, that’s your opinion on how you think writing should be done. Facts are these – there are no divinely given literary rules for writing. That’s why so many genres exist and why so many books break even the standards of those genres. And actually in stark contradiction to what you are now claiming is a mortal sin to storytelling would be the art of withholding information from the readers for purpose of mystery/foreboding/paranoia etc – often used in Mystery, Drama, Thriller, Horror, Science Fiction, Fantasy – well just about any kind of writing genre there is. Now, that being said – yes, there is tons of bad writing in reference to Scarlet and I agree 100% that there should’ve been better pacing and more insight into her character prior to the last few updates of the LS that is centered around her.

But if there’s one thing i’ve learned from reading a book, bad ones can be salvaged a tad with a good ending. (Again we’ll see, i’m completely nonchalant on whether it’ll go one way or the other.)

You’re entitled to your opinion as well, but I think she is as badly written at many people say. It would take Shakespeare to cobble together such disparate, conflicting & silly character pieces to make her work. & tbh, I don’t think the previously established GW universe supports such a wacky RP character. That may be why they’ve had to retcon, dismiss & alter so much established lore. To make way for something that doesn’t naturally fit.

Again, I disagree that the main problem is how she was presented but her actual character. “What Scarlet saw” was well written(the actual word crafting was really good), but ultimately made the character more unbelievable because it tried to made such a goofy, die-die-die, annoying, sodomize-lord-farren-jokes character have weight by going the way of the mary sue & making her “epic” at everything & “tragic” because she was “crazy”. it seems that a lot of people that like her, like her because she fits that RP wish-fulfilment for them. It’s a guilty pleasure but I don’t know it qualifies as high-art. & it stands out as such. It’s classic RP character mistake101. I fail to see how so many past characters that were influence by a GOD in the realms of Madness & Torment are less ridiculous in almost every way & yet Scarlet can still be viewed at “ok”.

Again with this Mary Sue term, it’s becoming more and more apparent that people obviously don’t understand what it means. Scarlet is NOT a Mary Sue by any means of the word. Look it up, it doesn’t mean what you think it means. A Mary Sue is a character which is infallible and a ‘do-gooder’ NOT a psychologically cracked, partial homicidal maniac. Yes, Scarlet “excells” in many fields but she had to LEARN them as expressed many times throughout the living story, a Mary Sue is naturally gifted with talents well beyond what her age would allow, and without any formal training. Also a Mary Sue is a character that is associated with horrifically written romantic undertones to normally a character well beyond her age. These are all things that Scarlet does NOT fall under the category of. So if you’re going to give reasons for Scarlet being a bad character, please realize that that term is not one that you can use correctly in context to her.

And as for the lore being retconned or dismissed, I don’t really see anything that exemplifies that except for maybe the Krait. And even there it’s mentioned that she held something over them or tricked them to get them to agree to an alliance to begin with.

Also you’re making some rather large assumptions about Scarlet’s madness by comparing her to every other character that is manipulated in some way by a GOD from the realms of torment, considering you have no idea if that’s the case with her or not. Also nowhere in the LS has it in ANYWAY tried to claim that Scarlet is a tragic character due to her insanity, if you’re annoyed at people inserting themselves into Scarlet on the forums and making up excuses for her that’s one thing but to claim that the LS it self backs those claims is just not accurate. We barely know enough about her to make her a sympathetic character in anyway let alone “tragic.” So, I don’t really know where you’re pulling that from.

I personally like Scarlet in the sense that she serves a purpose to illuminate the Sylvari race in a way we’ve not been able to see it yet, and hopefully in the end it’ll help cement them more into the world of Tyria’. She’s basically proof that the Sylvari are most likely a part from being minions of a dragon or chained to either the nightmare or the dream. The problems with the character have more to do with the way she’s been presented, and lack of background granted to us at the beginning. “What Scarlet Saw” should’ve been a part of the living story IN game, not something completely separate outside of it. The little poem hints, all of these things should’ve been in the game. When it comes to story telling a character can only remain dynamic if the story progresses, and this is something that just hasn’t happened at a consistent enough rate. It’s sad because scarlet as a character has great potential, but this should’ve been more noticeable earlier on. Hopefully anet has picked up on this and will be able to fix it in future LS content not involving her.

I think the problem at this point is not the criticism of Scarlet but how it’s been presented. It’s a bunch of unnecessary negativity about something Anet has very clearly stated is ending in the next three updates. There you go, you know when it’s over, they aren’t going to make it end any quicker, get the final updates and make your final remarks there.

Quite frankly this update has been mostly fun but the predestination mentality that is all over this thread would make even Gordan Ramsay defensive about his cooking.

Actually since EOTM is not meant to impact the score of wvw it’s a great place for the living story to have content in and helps to keep it out of the actual wvw maps. If that’s how it will end up working in the future then I’m all for it.

So after running around in Lion’s Arch, I found a very familiar map in the Consortium’s Gift Shop. I noticed some people had pointed that map out in Scarlet’s lair as having a ‘pin’ stuck in an area, well it looks like it’s not a pin at all and is a tear in the map. So either A) It’s a specific texture for that map and the tear means nothing in Scarlet’s lair or B) The Consortium has the same mark on their map in their Gift Shop which is…odd

after more running about it’s definitely just the texture of the map

also the second photo is of a pretty cabinet set up in the place, i don’t think i’ve seen (but if one of you have please let me know) this anywhere else in the game – notice the decorative aspect of it?

I don’t really know if a genetically engineered inquest experiment with dragon magic really answers the question of whether or not one dragon minion can corrupt another, all Subject Alpha proves is that they can be combined. Combining doesn’t imply that one specific corruption takes over another, they’re coexisting within Subject Alpha. In the world outside of the test tube lab that is CoE there has not been one instance of one Elder Dragon’s minions being corrupted by another Elder Dragon.

He slipped up in an interview and mentioned a Jungle Dragon which people have since speculated (and honestly I don’t know why they even try at this point it’s obvious a jungle dragon exists) that he actually meant Primordus for whatever reason they have come up with.

CoE, The Thaumanova Reactor, Subject Alpha’s attacks, and accounts found in the Library of the Durmond Priory including some dialogue from members of the Priory ALL point to there being a SIXTH Elder Dragon.

This is where I saw the whole “the marionette personifies Scarlet’s opinion of Tyria blah blah” at.

And yes! I thought about it after a while and Primordus can very well just create a new champion in the shape of the Great Destroyer, which isn’t a stretch at all.

At this point I don’t know if i’ll be more excited about it being a dragon update or something completely different out of the blue. I just want the next update already…i’m getting antsy. We have steam creatures, alliances, portals, a massive weapon’s test, Taimi (favorite new add by the way). There are so many things about Scarlet that just throw things up in the air and hopefully the next update will take steps in explaining a bit more.

@Mad Queen Malafide: I personally don’t find it unfair at all, the general “shape” of Primordus is obstructed from view, you get an idea of size but no definition of shape. It’s becoming more and more clear that your interpretation of the painting is just different from mine. You see tendrils and thorns I see spiky appendages or whatever else.

It would sort of matter that the Great Destroyer is destroyed considering the ceiling image is more than likely what has been whispering to her in her dreams. The Great Destroyer is destroyed it can’t currently do anything. Like, taunt and whisper Scarlet while she sleeps. And we know what she saw in the mists due to the short story. This thing she has painted on her ceiling isn’t mentioned anywhere in it, and for what it resembles it seems a rather large subject to leave out.

Also let me make it clear that by me calling that ceiling painting “abstract” and “dream like” I am in no way saying that makes it random or less prevalent than anything else in that lair. So using that quote to make a point about the other drawing doesn’t fly, because it’s not what I meant at all.

Scarlet attacked Divinity’s Reach to prove a point – She pulls the strings, no one else. She infiltrated and reworked an entire army made to serve Queen Jennah – it was a ceremony about Humanity and it’s success and Scarlet used it as a stage to prove just how wrong that opinion was. It wasn’t random, and it didn’t not serve a purpose. It struck fear in a race that rather considered itself top dog at that point. The Marionette which is made in the image of a Watchwork Knight is quoted to be “Scarlet’s interpretation of the races of Tyria” (or was it just humans?) all being puppets. Which of course leads back to her short story of what she saw – and her resolution to pit the forces that influence her race to go this way or that against each other. Isn’t it funny that the Marionette also serves to represent her a tad after reading that journal?

We could make points all day for what we think that ceiling painting is, but in the end we’ll probably both be wrong. And as for not seeing the other head I very clearly circle it in the first photo, it’s nearly identical to the actual head of the drawing. The only thing it lacks is a lower jaw.

Also I enjoy this back and forth stuff, i’m awake at 6 am with coffee and really really bored and yeah.

If there is one thing that drawing does not resemble, it’s the Great Destroyer.

Look at the head, totally different. The many legs, the body, the tail. Nothing of that can be found in the drawing. It also doesn’t resemble Primordus.

It’s a good thing I didn’t bring up Primordus as it being something that it resembled. However, it’s a stretch to draw conclusions that even YOU know what Primordus looks like considering the only time you’ve seen him he’s been dormant and very clearly not out in the open spreading his wings (if he has them), but rather mistaken for a statue by some asurans. All but his neck and head are obstructed from view completely.

Also, I beg to differ about The Great Destroyer (and yes, I already knew what it looked like, considering I made the connection, but thank you for your picture link). You’re correct the head is different, but as for the structure of the painting itself, it does have some similar aspects of The Great Destroyer in it, such as what looks to be very spiky appendages on what could be it’s under belly or maybe even a part of a wing meaning the torso of the beast isn’t depicted at all. But at the end of the day I don’t honestly think it’s The Great Destroyer, the dots were kind of there to represent how much of a stretch that was. My point is, you can’t really say it isn’t this or it is that because it’s very clearly an abstract, dream like drawing, of something that apparently scares a psychologically messed up individual. It could be anything. And I honestly don’t believe that the drawing under the table is just a random one thrown in. There’s a method to pretty much everything Scarlet does. And let’s be honest The Great Destroyer was …well, destroyed so it’s unlikely that the painting depicts it.

An important thing to note about the ceiling painting however, is that there is an area where it almost suggests there are “two heads”. Which honestly just makes this odd. It could also suggest that we never even make it past a certain area of the figure’s body before Scarlet starts redrawing the head and in a more uncontrolled fashion, evidenced by the shaky-ness of the ending of the drawing. The photo i’ve linked is of the middle of the drawing which has circled the top part of the figure’s head appearing once again halfway through the painting.

Alright guys i’ve arrived to be that annoying person with a whole lot of random tidbits no one seems to care about. So, i’ve noticed in reading page upon page in the forums about Scarlet’s motives that we can’t seem to stop looking at the same three things over and over again: The Sylvari, The Elder Dragons, and her alliances. Of course each have played a large role in Scarlet’s character thus far (well with the exclusion of Elder Dragons because that’s still considered a bunch of theories ( well unless you read Taimi’s dialogue)).

But what about the other stuff? Why is Scarlet linked to the Steam Creatures which are linked to the the asura personal story with the infinity ball? Why are the portals that Scarlet used to drop her minions during her invasion events the same as the portal seen in Lornar’s pass as a skill point and right by the Steam Creature’s tower? Why is the Marionette right to the south of this area? So far, in my opinion, the Steam Creatures have been a missing link in all of this, especially considering that they COME FROM THE FUTURE and Scarlet utilizes them. The Clockheart in the Aetherblade path of TA serves as a decent connection to that technology since it is known that the Steam Creatures are mostly machine but with some biological parts (apparently not enough to sustain life), though it would seem the Clockheart is the opposite of that in having more biological parts than mechanical ones. Similar technologies regardless.

Another thing that should be noted is Scarlet’s excellence in the Asuran College of Synergetics, a College that has been likened to Nuclear Engineering by Jeff Grubb. So she goes and makes this “Aethercannon” that has the ability to wipe out life in a large area? Hmmm, that sounds oddly nuclear weapon-like. There has been speculation about the green energy that Scarlet uses to power her watchwork minions, my theory is that it’s a refined form of chaos material (basically Tyria’s version of nuclear power). I mean that WOULD change the face of Tyria forever.

I do like that idea that maybe Scarlet dislikes her transformation from Ceara to what she is now, as possibly hinted at by her treatment of Omadd’s portrait in her lair – and even her journal. I mean come on it’s OBVIOUS by now that something else was at work in her vision of the mists (bumdumtss), and that whatever it was it cracked her in two psychologically. Also does anyone think that E could be that new cute as a kitten asuran progeny, Taimi?

And yes I did look up on the ceiling of her lair and tbh it does resemble The Great Destroyer………………………………………………………………………………………….resemble being the key word here.

But man what about those eyes of Sauron all over the place that she’s drawn? Also what is that weird drawing under the table directly to the left of your character when you enter her lair? It’s the only one of it’s kind. (see photo)

If it is indeed what the marionette is being lowered from, isn’t it more likely to be a portal connecting the same world that the steam creatures and watchwork “robots” are coming from?

Is the marionette something that was built in Tyria? It’s a tad big to be something no one noticed before now… Of course, there is the counter that the Tower came out of nowhere, too.

What kind of facilities are available, on the other side of the portal, to create the marionette? If this is a test, are we going to be treated to a sky full of marionettes?

Perhaps people like Caithe are the Champions for their respective Elder Dragons (her with Jungle dragon, perhaps?) and Scarlet sees each of the popular races of Tyria as the threat, because of the dragons?

She sets the lower races upon us to weaken the approach of the Elder dragons, and allies with Aetherblades (and steam creatures, are they part of the same group?) to prepare who she feels is a capable counter force to the rising of the dragons.

I’m sure there are plenty of holes in my ideas, I intend them to open more discussion.

Overall, I feel like Scarlet is becoming less insane rather than more insane as the story progresses.

There are several blueprint drawings in Scarlet’s lair including one of the slides you see when you open the console that show the thing the marionette lowers out of as a drill.

Actually this event has served to only strengthen the community of my server. We’ve had more people in our ts than ever before and a primarily positive review altogether. Sorry to hear it’s not working that way for others.

So like many people i’ve received my character’s birthday present (second one actually) and it has come to my attention, that even for my first birthday, the experience scroll within was all but obsolete to my account. I have every profession above level 20 (actually I only have one under level 80 and that’s my level 35 guardian), and therefore have absolutely no use for this item. I was wondering if Anet would consider changing the item so that even a level 80 character could use the birthday experience scroll and gain 20 skill points. As it stands now i’m just going to have to destroy one of my birthday presents and I don’t think that’s very efficient.

Just , I’m sorry but lol are people seriously that out of tune with how other classes play that they think diamond skin is some sort of game changer? It should be buffed so that I can read about more viable tears.

I honestly don’t want to hear it. Diamond skin is a grandmaster trait down a line that is fully toughness condition spec for a class that does no damage when speced for such. So sorry your full condi roflstomp build is hitting a very small rock with its pinky toe if caught in a 1v1 with an elementalist actually speced for the trait, cause if this same ele is caught in a 2v1 it’s the same story as always. We already have a TERRIBAD vitality pool ,and chipping through a 90% health threshold isn’t hard to do to my class if we are speced for even a small amount of damage output. I just don’t want to hear it, our traits are already messed up and more attuned with taking care of other players than us. If we want to damage we are paper thin and if we want to survive we have no damage. How bout this. You give me back a normal friggin cd on ride the lightning and I may consider this argument valid. Unlikely.

And FYI the only “passive” healing an ele has is soothing mist, which you must be traited for and attuned to water to trigger. Signet of restoration works only if an ele is attacking it’s not passive.
