Recent matchmaking issues

I don’t think the win ratio can necessarily be relied on (unless running in a premade).

I have had some really bad lose streaks (ie didn’t win outright) but still gained many points on the leaderboard on the last season. This was primarily due to often being in impossible odds matches (<0-20% of scoring 200 points).

It’s something to bear in mind that even losses are not necessarily losses when you area gaining points on the leaderboard.

To further prove this-
Total points gained =21

Solo q: — Phase 1--
9 wins with 10 loses – just under 50%. (15 points gained)

—Phase 2—
Then did some testing with some guildies on Sat [3-4 guildies/friends and a ANET person who was kind enough to join us for some fun]. We are a PvX guild so had some idea about PvP (and no idea about a lot of advanced strategies) with 3 out of 5 of the team in TS. We had no real idea what builds each other were running and only a little bit of sync between us (team composition).
Won 4 matches, lost one – points gain: 6. (Points lost from the lost match =0)

—Phase 1— solo que : felt a lot harder and it was obvious some win / loss matches from the outset with impossible odds. But I still tried my best and watch Jess kaboom (It’s kaboomy time have some fun). Little team communication often in match ups so it’s very hit n miss if you will win. There is no easy way to compare builds or sync together.

—Phase 2— full team : was running some wacky warrior build (Zeus Beckett) that I had never really tested fully apart from a couple of matches before in the solo que. Let’s just say we did really well.
The match we lost was a difference of less than 100 points.
The matches we won were really close and our last match we were fighting dragons and top 25 players (who told me from a friend in our team) and we were genuinely suprised we won. There was a difference of less than about 20 points in the win.

The main thing is the fights were awesome fun.

I’m not sure what will happen when I return to solo que and how my MMR will work now I have played some full team setups to the future matches.

When running in solo que it does feel like some matches are more impossible odds than good ones. But hey if you see “Jess Kaboom out there – I promise you’re in for a Kaboomy time – win or lose !”

Wouldn’t it be easier if there was an option to not show cumulative damage as default..

Then when I hit something – I really understand what the actual damage I really did for that hit was.

This would probably enlighten a lot of people how much damage things do in a clearer way without having to peer into the combat logs?

If they want to see as a menu option:
1) cumulative damage done per skill
2) damage done vs a particular foe from you (cumulative total- resets to 0 when you swap for).

This would probably make things a lot clearer for everyone to see what’s really going on.

So if I use my flamethrower and spam 1 real quick I can hit 150k dmg.
How much dmg do I do on each hit ?

Is it doing more damage over time?
I’m confused.

Sometimes I see my GS Skill 2 hit for 30K or Pistol Whip hit for 20K.
How much damage am I actually doing per hit ?

How can I tell how much damage I’m actually doing if these numbers are cumulative?
I’m confused can you explain this stuff to me?

I know what happened…
The slvari lovingly cared for our mini llamas they grew to an adorable shiney loved by all.
The skritt then hopped along and went my shineys- the grinchy skritt stole them before wintersday.

Now we’ve sent out the search and rescue squad under guidance of a very pale tree (she’s a bit I’ll now)- so our directions to locate them are a bit hazey.

Once found Evon Gnasherblade will be in charge of distribution. He’s still feeling a bit grumpy after loosing to Kiel in the last vote so it’ll happen when he feels better. Give it a while and prize a tron (hero a tron will be renamed again) will be sending out the mails by carrier pigeon.

^apologies to any PvP purebred as none of this will make sense – but the PvXers out there may be having a few giggles^

Tips for beating the Vinewrath

Okay today a few guildies setup a map which succeeded at both breech (5/5) and vinewrath(3/3) – 5 times in a row on .226 (I think).

We did not map hop.

Personal DPS is a great benefit all professions have access to some heal skills for carriers (eg water fields on ele/ranger) which are the best area heals for the entire group and players. By ensuring the carriers successfully get to the end of the lanes will give you a massive carrier buff (regen, might, fury etc etc)

As for some tips:(lanes)
*Use siege
*Keep carrier alive – water fields and blast finishers, Stelth the carrier (viel, shadow refuge etc).
*light the signal fires (Keep it going when the mobs spawn up).
Rebuild the ammo as quickly as possible if it runs out.

Do lots and lots of damage.

It is usually the bosses which cause the most problems – and here you want to be specd for as much DPS as possible (zerker / sinister works a treat : please leave the nobads gear at home) – to make this fight smooth (eg ice bows, melee and ranged weapons).
Warriors can bring war banner (battle standard) for fast res of the downed.

Careful timing of choice commands make life easier
Boss 1 – Bees : 3 people kite into donught red ring to build honeycomb. Rest to DPS the boss.
Stand on commander on honeycomb when boss goes to back of room – avoid big aoe.

Boss 2- kill flowers get buff, DPS avoid red rings (melee is Good if you know what to do).
Bring reflects / feedback etc.
Go to White box in front of boss when he goes to back of room and DPS like crazy.

Boss 3- DPS boss and kill flowers. Jump on flower when boss at back of room to avoid room aoe.

Keep it short, simple and sweet and people soon get the hang of it.

It won’t be too long and people will be doing this easily.
There should be very few people that will not have got the hang of this in a couple of weeks.

Hopefully this kind of content will encourage more teamwork so people get the hang of doing three headed wormy without TS as its not any more complex than these bosses tbh.

One of the big problems running into a match is if we are expected to lose with impossible odds?

There will always be some matches where your MMR / etc should mean you lose… The grief that follows afterwards of people looking at your win ratio or MMR does unfortunatly become a target for critism or abuse.

GW1 successfully hid most of this information behind one metric – rank. That is all the information you knew and you would make an assessment if they player may be any good or not in your team or role that you needed.

I think it’s very demoralising when a bunny rank, tiger, bear to be constantly facing dragon ranks and am I ever going to win this?
I fully appreciate as Justin has mentioned how people will consider rank to be a factor in matchmaking.

The problem is just basing it off MMR ?
If someone is playing a mobility role: they may be in the team to finish stuff off or get fast caps – hit n run. Depending on the rest of the team will wildly affect there MMR.
What if they land with 3 other mobility configured class members?

Bunker – someone who bunks – what if they land with 4 other bunker type build characters?

DPS killers / support : put multiple of these in a party without the above?

All these combinations in a team can widely affect the team composition and potential outcome MMR rating. I can’t see any way of looking at this to factor into the MMR which may be based on that persons playstyle and profession.

I wonder if any stats are available supporting if bunk only configs or dos/support only configs are more likely to win against others regardless of the mmr rating. Even if they play there particular config/build well.

Just a thought.

Ye – the class stacking is absolute rubbish.

Problem is previously as a solo quer I had a 50% win ratio.
Now I’m down to about a 44% win ratio under this new system.

It seems i get on the loosing side more often than not but still manage to prevent point losses where possible.

I have now started apologising for killing the enemy if I’m finding the match too easy.

As I solo que the match ups I have had are well… Awesomely awkward and bad more often than not.

The most interesting ones are like the 10 min match we had and it was close to the end .. 498vs500 or something close. It was absolutely epic.

That one I actually really enjoyed as the skill levels of our team must have been really closely balanced. Although on paper looking at our team we shouldnt have won based on team composition – we did really well (still lost ).

I have 250 tomes of knowledge , 250 skill points, 7 lvl up to 20 scrolls.
16toons ( I think)- 8 at lvl 80 (with all traits unlocked), 8 toons at lvl 21 (to farm silver doubloons for a legendary at those JPs).

They thing which stops me right now insta levelling my other toons – is the new trait system and the horrible silver doubloon drop rate. My main has something like 3000 points for crafting (via mystic forge).

Right now they are flowing like water and I don’t really have much use for them as the PVP tracks are giving them away like crazy.

But hey I have found a use !!!

*Instant revive from downed in PVE *
I think when you level up you insta revive – going to come in handy for learning some solo dungeon runs

You could also gain points for keeping foes off point which you are engaged in fighting with!

Sometimes it’s critical to divert and distract some of the enemy to allow your team to gain vital caps elsewhere on the map.

Can't Q together as a team,abandoned Q window

It’s usually because one of the players is still Qued in a match and it has not cancelled on the backend.

I have seen this quite a few times.
Wait for all the players to finish the active Ques(if they did que earlier and cancel the que will still pop up and they need to complete that match). and try again joining up and resubmitting into the que.

Hi all,

Anyone else notice some players do wierd stuff in the Pvp matches?

Like hit you twice as fast (even on same profession) as if there skills have no cooldowns?
— got hit by a thief who could spam trail of knives 2-3 times as fast compared to me in downed state.

I think saw a ranger having perm swiftness on the toon deactivating a skill really quickly.

I know the leaderboards have probably done some wierd motivation for players to get shineys?

Is there any auto detection system that detects if these players are playing properly or something wierd is going on?

I would hate to be loosing to a few matches which I shoud win if there is some dodgy stuff going on. Anyone else notice any thing odd when playing a match or is it just me?

You will still progress your personal level if you do a higher level.
This is where good guilds can really help you progress your stuff along nicely or the LFG,

Personally I think lvl 49 is much harder than 50.
If it’s a question of not having enough agony for lvl 49 then just repeat lvl 40 until you have enough agony, ascended armor for lvl 50.

I did all the instabilities and it was shall we say interesting the first time – but beyond that became more of an annoyance and a suboptimal strategy to complete the content when a lvl 50 smooth run is completed in under an hour.

This is an awesome idea!

Please also add a profession check – if I ask for an Ele :they can view it but cannot join unless they hop on there ele.
So many groups I have had to kick people who have come on the wrong profession (PHIW- Please help I’m worthless and cannot read the LFG description so carry me now I just want the shineys).

Having to relist so many times means that the LFG tool bugs out and in the end we complete content 3 or 4 man as its easier than carrying someone who won’t listen or is badly setup.

I’m sorry that some players could not login and get this stuff for free.
Previously the system was you had to be there to experience the content and get the exclusive rewards (Scarlet invasion, kessex tower) and once it was over that was it.
This new system is 100000% better – as if you don’t have time to do it then you can later in 3-12 months time and still get any item drops from the story !

The system rewards players for sticking with gw – even if that means logging in (and nothing else during a two week period) until your real life stuff gets sorted out and playing it later.

For the majority of players $10-20 can be saved for multiple LS upgrades OR 300g can be farmed out over a few weeks. Most play styles will net 10g/HR once you know what you are doing (eg silverwastes/drytop/cursed shore/Karka farming) and play the game as intended.

There will always be outliers who will be in special situations and catering for everyone is going to be nigh on impossible. Please stop with the “we are entitled to this” give it to us for free – look at the alternative ways to get this stuff. Or “its too expensive” – eg make it free.

If your struggling to get into groups where you don’t meet there requirements (eg zerk or AP/gear check) or are getting annoyed by them – setup you own group with a big “everyone welcome” sign to whatever you are doing by using the LFG tool.

Guild permission - Mission Control

I think the key is here we don’t mind someone having permission to activate guild mission upgrades (which is what mission control should do).

But not have someone able to activate any upgrade (eg world boss spawns).

It seems like it is meant to allow someone to activate guild missions but unfortunatly seems a tad broken.

May be time for a good old bug forum post instead.

I thought it would be a good time to backup the bad matchmaking and extreme loosing streaks with some proper stats. People love metrics / stats.

The stats show big loosing streak days – no-matter what I do what effort that I put in – it’s a complete waste of time.

On these days marked ^^ – the match ups are extremely bad.
Days marked $$ – I achieved a reasonable win rate / loss rate.

Conversely the days marked $$ were also “fun” and played many matches.
Days marked ^^ made me want to do something else.
Days afters higher a short match bout with a high win ratio typically result in a high loss ratio the next day.

I have no reason to explain why I can go from average 45% win ratio to under 20% on some days.

Can you use this data to look into why the loosing streaks are so long ?
As this data is mostly on a thief profession is there any way to balance it so matches take account of how many of a typical profession are in a team (eg 2-3 thief make +2 mesmer up vs full heavy team) and incorporate this into the team matching algorithm ?
- it’s often obvious that a team with 2 or 3 theifs vs a similar makeup but with Necros on the opposite side will always win 9 times out of ten.

If anyone has any ideas how to improve the match making or break a loosing streak please let me know !
(Most of this is played with the same build each day on thief – cause I wanted to ensure stats gathered would be as easy as possible to analyse).

I’m no way a “pro” PVP person but know enough to be a little dangerous on maps.

I get this big all the time.

What’s worse is 10-15 mins later the whisper dialog pops up and then you can send a message. The problem is it takes your focus away from whatever you were doing – and 12asdwd appears in the whisper chat. Instead of moving my character I am now splat dead !

Thief builds

Nope – I think the ele is way more dmg over a sustained period.

The only advantage a thief has is a bit of stealth – which less face it is so massively overpowered that it should be nerfed into oblivion. I mean like you go hide and become a god super invulnerable – jeez this has to stop . I can’t kill em !

They run about taunting me, hiding doing naff all dmg and waving at me from stelth then stomp me down harder and faster from nowhere before I can say boo!

It’s intended. Any weapon exotic which originally came with MF stats are now stat selectable – the drawback is it becomes account bound on aquire.

When you choose the stats it becomes soul bound. (Careful which char you do it in is the one you want to use it on).

I know in gw1 it seemed an easier time to get those rarer items (eg crystaline sword from UW/mini dhuum – approx 1 in 100 based on my exp).

Having run Tequatl daily since release it is wierd how some of my characters never get a weapon box but my character playing the worst build ever gets them (really bad builds with low DPS ).

Something like 2 is needed (Implement measures that counteract low-end outlier behavior inside of game design. This would be a system that is something like: If player hasn’t received a rare drop in X time send them Y tickets for random drops.)

But instead of random tickets for random drops there needs to be a scaler multiplier on an account to increase the chance of getting those drops which have not occurred on that account eg mini Tequatl (have had 0 drop so far), Teq armor box – those items which are considered on the “super rare drop table” which players really should have a good chance of getting over a longer period of time.

It’s no fun grinding (I mean repeating content >4mo) for a drop which is still not appearing. Unfortunatly tracking this may be a bit of a bind but will significantly enhance the player experience as a whole.

The problem with really random RNG in a map is that someone gets lucky and many get unlucky (who have been unlucky for a long time). Tipping odds in favour of multiple people getting the high end considered drops they have not had in a long time would help those out who are on the extreme side of the outlier table.

I am hoping something truly gets done about the god awful RNG system that affects players so they feel like they actually have a decent shot at something.

The RNG system being replaced by the PvP track for wintersay works for the exotic underwater piece works nicely and takes the 4weeks for a casuals play style to get one piece. If only things like this could stay longer term.

Demand is higher for weapons people actually want to use (eg daggers/2 handed weapons). These lovely selection of weapons are hardly used by anyone for anything remotely useful.

Stop trying to manipulate the lower end market of precursors.

Bingo ! If only I could get a platinum (gw1) or gold (gw2) for how many times this thread comes up – I would be the richest player on earth. Please pass the super sized popcorn and soda over.

This game is different to other MMOs – it’s not RP and it’s more FPS style with team work.

Many choices were made during the original design of the game – if you don’t like it there may be many other games that suit your style like WoW (don’t try to make gw2 like wow either), Archage (or is that hackerage now?), Everquest, Neverwinter nights (does the sun ever come up?).

The trinity of healer, DPS, tank as individual roles was removed – no-one likes healers getting the blame for tanks over stretching etc..the healers getting the blame for not keeping everyone alive. The team not having enough DPS causing the healer to run out of energy and getting the blame for keeping the team alive. The healer raging and quitting on the group cause of the above. The N hours of spamming glf monk !! (Some enjoy that role – but it’s no fun waiting for hours for a person) .

Now it’s possible to trait and modify things so many other roles can take the place of others eg. Reflect Mesmer (could replace guardian reflects). There are so many possibilities to get team composition working for a group without too much specialisms. (Eg armor or runes etc- to at least suffice).

The limited number of skills when holding a dagger (as main weapon) was limited to make balancing the game easier. One of the major problems MMOs suffer is too many skills or weapon combinations can make a game difficult to balance. This was a design choice by ANET. Gw1 became too difficult to balance due to the high number of combinations of skills that could be used.

Gw never said they didn’t have trinity – just not the traditional MMO DPS, heal, tank roles – like wow, gw1, …insert every other generic MMO here.

The conclusion is that staff is great for open world but there are many better choices when in a dungeon scenario.

The problem is after 2 years many people will understand what is more optimal have a better idea how to get dungeons done quickly and expect similarly ideas of people.

This then becomes a exp run vs a play how I want run.
The longer the content is in place the higher the expectation that people will play as experienced and will lean towards a more optimal setup through trial and error or experience. (You are more likely to remain in groups if you are flexible and try the more optimal setups – even if you’re struggling to understand the build initially).

The runs with low level characters or inexperienced players where it goes fine (eg 15-30 mins) as opposed to (~9mins) is where the difference comes in.

It is really difficult to know which camp people are in (PHIW or EXP or META only) unless you join a guild with a similar style.

I don’t even bothering joining idiots parties that are only seeking ‘their own party builds team’. So freakin’ ridiculous.
On my main, which is a mesmer, during Ascalonian Catacombs dungeon I created a LFG party, until we came inside the dungeon, I got kicked from my OWN created party only because I was using a PvE Mesmer with Staff.

Sure, it goes alot faster with this stupid build if everyone got that during dungeons, but heeeyyy- I’ve completed many AC, CM dungeons with only low-leveles and it worked just fine!
I just don’t see why people are so… unfair.
This community is just getting even worse everyday. People curse at each other, kicking people because they’re wearing the wrong armors, weapons or even the wrong race!!!
It’s quite sad, really.

Basically even though you may have been (assasins geared – which is the met a for Mesmer) your choice of staff did not fit the optimal meta for a dungeon setting. Where staff is more appropriate for somewhere else.

Glad it wasn’t TEQ, Karka queen or Triple headed Wurm !
Spawn rates every 4 hours doesn’t make this fun.

To be frank I would prefer a dungeon – eg run any path of x,y,z dungeon as it’s not got a time gated start than a world boss event.
In GW1 even the harder 12 man dungeons were on a rotation for extra bonuses and it worked pretty well to increase the number of people in that area.

It’s WvW – unfortunately many individuals have treated it like a karma train.

The best commanders use it like a WvW map defend, Zerg hunt (which gets more bags [bags = loots] than a karma train).

The reason it became a karma train is due to the number of events that could be completed in a short amount of time after they removed karma from dungeons and other events where players would otherwise be found.

Depending which colour you are you may find people bunkering down in the main keep (corner of the map) to wipe incoming zergs. It’s really good fun with a party of 5 or so firing massive ACs onto the enemy and wiping the incoming zergs.

Most individuals now rely on Tequatl killing for karma (~30k) per completion and will do this on alts as it’s much faster than edge of the mists.

Anyone hurling abuse at you use the /report command or right click there name and click report for verbal abuse. Unfortunately people are people and make mistakes saying the wrong things.

Simple question for you then; Presuming you’re not a top 1% or even a top 50% player, do you think silverwastes content is easier, harder, or the same for people in glass melee?

I don’t think Mordrems are harder than other monsters. They’re just newer.
After playing against them a bit you learn about their attacks and their animations and how to deal with them.

Right now my biggest issue with Silverwaste enemies are telling whether a teragriff will jump on me, or charge at me and the size of their charge hitbox.

It’s easier than that – cripple a terragriff it won’t charge and fall flat on its face. Then kaboom dmg and dead. It’s all about finding the active defense

For that guild bank – fastest way to get there is to map into your home WvW zone and take the portal out back to LA.

I know it’s a bit of a load – but for many it’s faster than running about around LA.

For the bells : Rotate your camera so you can see down – it helps.

This way you can see the notes clearly as they pass into the blue zone and fire those skills off.
