You take way to long to make decisions. Either do something or dont. And where do you find these players? That warrior was the only one who even did anything and he would only use earthshaker (which you never dodged or avoided at all) and then he would just stop attacking. Both yours and your opponents gameplay didnt feel very smooth

Yeah I was just thinking the exact same thing, for a 1v7 or whatever it was, he sure was taking way too long to make decisions, if the other players had even a little skill it would’ve gone down very differently.

Thief is about timing and patience. There is no reason to act any faster than he did. I think he did quite well, to be honest. When it comes down to 1v7, enemy skill level doesn’t even matter. That’s 7 human beings against 1.

How long does it take gw2skills to update their trait system for the new ones usually? I’d like to theory craft but I feel like they won’t update it till at least the new runes come out. Would he nice if they released the new runes and not wait till the 15th to do so

I’ve been thinking the same thing. It kinda sucks that we still don’t know the exact data on the ferocity changes (whether they’re rounding up or down on the 6% buff to celestial). Otherwise, I wouldn’t see a reason why they couldn’t update the calc for proper build crafting. I would imagine they will wait for the patch rather than adding a bunch of tentative information to their site.

This is why i think it won’t be changed. With that in mind i think this trait loses much of its appeal, for me at least.

Aw. I’m so excited for it. I already have gear and everything picked out. I think it will be quite good in the right spec. Who knows. It could be completely OP or a bust. I would imagine somewhere in the middle. Guess we’ll find out. :P

Question: So if you have Stone Heart equipped, does this prevent you from receiving critical hits in general or only prevent the critical damage?

I’m asking this because just about every profession has a trait that says, “Gain (such and such) buff when you critically hit an enemy.”

So if you aren’t affected by critical hits at all, will they no longer receive these benefits?

Similarly, will you no longer say…. gain regeneration when hit by a critical hit when in Earth from…. uh… whatever that water trait is called.

Basically the attacks that would have been crits will become non-crits. As a result, those on-crit traits, sigils, or whatever will not proc.

No. Unless they change Lingering Elements which has yet to be confirmed it will not linger. Lingering Elements affects CERTAIN traits only.

That may be part of the bug fixed that ele are getting in fact all classes are getting some type of bug fix.

The devs have stated that Lingering Elements is currently working as intended.

Lingering Elements
All passive bonuses for that attunement should linger. This means Flame Barrier, Stone Flesh, Soothing Mist, and Zephyr’s Speed.

I think this trait needs better wording. I hope you all understand why that trait would be wildly overpowered if it carried over everything particularly all 10% damage bonuses. You could simply slam through all attunements and then get 50% bonus damage. Similarly making other things work with this would requires those traits get lowered in the base case as well. I think this is a fine 15 point minor trait on its own and we can reword it and then discuss the merits of the other traits on their own.

To me, that is a better starting point for discussion than attempting to balance all of these effects with how they might work with a minor trait in Arcana. That would predicate the entire profession around that trait which is not what we want out of our minor traits.

curious as to why you didnt just take 6 runes of melandru?

I addressed this a little bit in my last point in the above post, but basically I just prefer -70% in all condi duration and -103% in chill, cripple, and immobilize. I don’t find myself eating a lot of stuns unless there are several people spamming them on me all at once, in which case, it probably comes down to using a stun break or dying. I can’t think of any fight where -25% stun duration would have saved me, but I can think of plenty of encounters where a condition was just one tick too long. I’ve also encountered necromancers with 90% condi duration who were able to chill me for what felt like ages (even with -103% in chill duration) so I would prefer to mitigate that as much as possible. Albeit, that isn’t exactly common, I find chill to be incredibly dangerous on ele and I would like to avoid it at all cost.

Additionally, you’re allocating all your rune slots to condition duration reduction, which doesn’t seem optimal. If you went with full melandru runes, you’d essentially have the same level of immunity to cripple, chill, and immob, but you’d have higher toughness and reduced stun duration as well. If you felt you needed any additional condi removal, you could simply put 30 in water.

I used to run x2 Melandru, x2 Water, and x2 Monk, and that was fine, but I ended up going with x4 Resistance and x2 Melandru because I feel there is actually a pretty big difference in -83%, -98%, and -103% when it comes to chill, cripple, and immobilize. I’ve tried all three flavors, and while any of them would be perfectly fine, I strongly prefer the -103%. There are fewer little snags and it makes my play more fluid. It also has the added bonus of completely removing those annoying slows from traps and NPCs (I’m looking at you EotM). The lack of cleanse in my build is pretty annoying sometimes, and it often results in my death, but I still feel like I get more out of my runes and food than I would get out of 30 in Water. When there are a lot of enemies on you, there simply comes a point when there isn’t enough cleanse in the world to save you. However, the -condi duration set up counters a lot of that. It also makes it even easier when you’re running with the FGS because you can’t use Mist Form or Cleansing Wave when you have it equipped. There have been entire zergs unable to immobilize me. I just can’t give up that kind of momentum. Not easily anyway.

In any case, very nice video. I’m still trying to practice my d/d ele, although I like playing it glassier for the damage (definitely dies a lot though).

I’m a bit confused as to why you elect to go with 20 in earth magic as opposed to 30 in water magic. Getting the condition removal on regeneration application means you would have on demand condi removal… The extra health would also provide some inherent protection against damaging condition, although that’s more of a minor benefit.

It’s funny that you bring this up. I’ve actually been playing with a few different trait options lately (0/10/0/30/30, 0/10/10/20/30, 0/20/0/20/30, and 0/30/0/10/30 to be specific) just out of boredom and discontent with my build. Overall, for my style of play, 20pts in Earth seems to offer much greater sustain than 30pts Water. To address the specific points you mentioned:

  • Cleansing Water, while very good with Elemental Attunement and skills like Healing Rain, isn’t utilized as much as it should be in a D/D spec. Don’t get me wrong, it is a great trait, and when Cleansing Fire was a stunbreak, it was amazing to get that extra condi removed on a skill with a relatively low CD, but as it is now, I just wouldn’t get the most out of the trait. I would never use Armor of Earth, Mist Form, or Lightning Flash for the cleanse because the CDs are so high and they serve a better purpose. If I ever cleansed any condis with Cleansing Water (outside of Elemental Attunement), it would just be a coincidence.
  • The extra vitality from 30 in water is excellent (even the healing power makes a noticeable difference). However, it does come at the cost of armor. Personally, I prefer to have high armor and low HP. I am just really comfortable with 15k health for whatever reason. That isn’t to say I don’t enjoy the boosts from WvW bonuses and Applied Fortitude, but as a base, 15k is the sweet spot for me. I would say the extra condi defense I would get from 100 more vitality isn’t nearly as good as what I get in the Master tier of the Earth tree.

This also means that you’re losing out on bountiful power, which means you’re easily missing out on a consistent +3-5% direct damage output. I don’t really feel the cripple on earth attunement is worth that, although I haven’t tried it out too much.

This is an excellent point. Bountiful power is great. However, at the same time, being almost completely immune to cripple, chill, and immobilize gives me more momentum as a D/D ele. I would argue that in many cases Geomancer’s Freedom allows me to output more DPS than Bountiful Power. If I’m immobilized, I won’t be dodging into fire fields for might. If I’m chilled, my skills are going to have longer CDs (increasing the time between my bursts) and I will move much slower (making it it more difficult to get into melee range to actually land hits). I can’t provide percentages for you, but logically, the ability to do damage more frequently and accurately, coupled with additional might stacks, has to increase DPS to some degree. The cripple and damage when swapping to Earth is negligible. It’s just a bonus to having 20 in Earth. Perhaps I might try utilitizing that more when kiting (like a psuedo Sigil of Hydromancy).

I suppose it might be kind of nice to have virtually complete immunity to cripple, chill, and immob, but between ether renewal and your cantrips, you already have multiple ways of dealing with those.

Believe me, watching a warrior throw a Bolas at you only for him to see “Immune” in return is the most beautiful thing in the entire world. It makes it nearly impossible for the typical shatter mesmer to land their burst and venom share thieves loading up a party with Devourer Venom are not nearly as problematic. There are so many cases where it pays off. Overall, it is just excellent. I address the latter half of your comment in my next point.

Best vid out of the rest, skillplay improved tremendously the last time we’ve fought.
Couldn’t really find much mistakes except maybe the blink ce on a line of warden, but the rest was amazing.
Things that I liked:
1. Sexy fgs fiery rush
2. Beautiful blink stomps
3. Rotations were amazing
4. Great burning speed blink combo’s
5. In the middle of bursting/rotation your ally went down and you were quick to react and get him back up

It largely depends on the specs. If the ele is running Diamond Skin and the necro is all in on condi damage, the ele will have an easy win. However, an ele without Diamond Skin will just melt to Corrupt Boon, Signet of Spite, and Dhuumfire if both are playing at equal levels.

impressive gameplay footage. I am curious about your keybinds for weapon and utility skills. Can you explain to what keys you bound them?

Thanks! I have been playing with the Razer Naga for a while now and it has made keybinding so much easier. I use 1-4 on the keyboard for my attunements and 1-10 on the mouse for my weapon and utility skills. Before I had the mouse, I somehow used the default keybinds, though I wouldn’t dream of playing that way now. xD

after the patch, traveler runes seem to be even better:
Disadvantage:
- 15% boon duration
Advantage:
+6% Crt DMG
+20 to all stats.

Instead of Acuracy Sigil you could also take generosity

Another concern I have about Traveler’s would be the loss in -10% condi duration. I would have to see how roots and slows were without that extra -10% before I could really sell myself on it. However, I do get tired of moving at a glacial pace when I have to run across the map.

the 1st thing that puts me off your build is the “lack” of blast finishers but surely I could just run the new heal, anyway would this sort of build work in PvE aswell?

Oh, believe me, I understand. I play engineer as well, and the amount of blasts you have with the right kits is amazing. However, this build has all the blast finishers it needs. On the offhand dagger, you have two blasts in Earth (Earthquake and Churning Earth), and you have another blast every time you dodge roll in Earth thanks to Evasive Arcana. According to the recent Ready Up stream, D/D is also getting a new blast finisher in Water with Frozen Burst. In most cases, I can get 20+ stacks of might just swapping attunements and blasting my own fields. Of course, like you said, there is always the option of taking the new heal (or perhaps dropping a cantrip), but this build lacks condition removal without Ether Renewal, so I wouldn’t recommend taking anything else, but it is definitely possible, and if you can make it work, that’s great!

I use this spec in PvE, and it works just fine. However, it is built for WvW, so I’m sure there are more effective ways of using an ele in PvE.

I found myself rewatching this one twice Would you mind if I share it on the GW2 subreddit? I think a lot of people would enjoy some solid D/D action in there.

Been through most of your previous episodes as well, you just have a very enjoyable playstyle. Always kiting and showing a good balance between outnumbered fights and skillful opponents. Keep making em :-)

You are quick enough to play D/D nicely but it seems you do not use all your moves to full capacity.3 in particular

1)Air 2.So usefull when playing against warriors/guardians specialy in solo situations where you want a bit more dmg.I think you never used it in the vid

2)Magnetic Grasp-Fire field->Fire Aura for more might and to catch fleeing foes.Very nice if you are prepared to take some hits in order to land a much bigger burst

3)Churning Earth.When playing with a group in WvW and you are not focused a churning earth from behind to unsuspecting foes will most probably destroy them.Works as a nice feint in 1vs1 as well.

What program are you using to record?

Thank you for the feedback! Yes, I definitely have a lot to work on, for sure. I try to reserve Air #2 for really high burst targets like thieves, but sometimes I forget to add it in there for other targets as well. I will try using the Fire Aura trick. My main problem is that the first thing I do when I swap to Earth is stack might, and the fire fields don’t always last long enough, but I might be able to sneak that in there. Magnetic Grasp has such a short CD, it’d be silly not to try.

I am using Bandicam.

Are you really running soothing disruption or was that a misclick? Seems rather redundant when you have both renewing stamina and elemental attunement for perma vigor and very high uptime regeneration.

Nope, it wasn’t a mistake. This build is made for outnumbered situations. Renewing Stamina provides a lot of vigor, but not quite enough in those types of situations. I tend to draw a lot of focus fire. Things like boon strip and corrupt boon sometimes leave me seconds without vigor, and it throws me off when I’m playing. That’s one less heal, one less blast finisher, or one less blind. However, while that doesn’t necessarily happen all the time, it isn’t uncommon for a 5v10 to quickly turn into a 5v30. Renewing Stamina provides little to no vigor when I am running from those large zergs because I’m not attacking like I would in a normal fight. The extra vigor I get teleporting away or using Armor of Earth has been a life saver when I otherwise wouldn’t be able to turn around to deal damage. In most cases, I’m using the Firey Greatsword and dodging to evade an attack, or blind, or heal. Soothing Disruption is pretty essential in that situation. I’m more focused on getting out of combat in those situations anyway as the back of the group that is chasing me is likely taking advantage of the out of combat speed and I lack adequate swiftness.

^I agree with that. I used to do that, too. But reduced cantrip times is far more useful.

I take Cantrip Mastery and Soothing Disruption.

I’m a fan of this build but not some of the traits. I would probably take rock solid to use with ether renewal, it would also free up stone splinters, specially if your already using armor of earth. But I also like geomancers, lemongrass, and melandru runes for some nasty condi reduction. Also as others have stated I would use cantrips reduction, those cds are grossly long. My only thing with this build is you don’t run traveler runes, signet of air or zephyrs speed, and being melee I always thought it be important. I have only ever run this build with traveler runes so I’d like to hear thoughts on that.

I really like Rock Solid too. I’ve been playing with it in sPvP and it’s really good (all the stomps are mine >:D). I don’t think I could live without the condition reduction from Geomancer’s Freedom though. I love it when I’m in the middle of a group and they’re all desperately trying to immobilize me. xD

As far as Traveler’s goes, I have been tempted more than once to take them, but I am leery about losing 15% boon duration. I need to test it to see if I could still get 20+ stacks of might without it. It is definitely something to consider though. I am sooo incredibly slow unless I take the time to swap weapons and stack swiftness.

You do know sigil of blood and sigil of battle share cooldown right? Two sigils with internal cooldowns is generally a waste of a sigil :o

I was under the impression that only sigils of the same type (i.e. two on-swap sigils) shared cooldowns. That’s both interesting and disappointing. I guess I’ve never noticed because Battle always procs reliably, and that’s really the only sigil that matters to me. I chose Blood as kind of an “in addition to” type of thing. I was tired of running with Force. So silly. In any event, I will likely switch to something like Battle/Hydromancy once the patch hits. I love the on-swap effects. xD

A little over a month ago I made a post here with a few of my roaming videos. The reaction was pretty positive overall so I thought some of you might like to see more. I actually did manage to get a few solo clips in this time. They aren’t brilliant by any means, and I’m clearly not fighting elite players, but it was still fun. Please do something about Cleansing Fire, giving it back a stunbreak or making a smoke field or something. Anything really to justify a 40 seconds cooldown on a 3 condition clearer.

I don’t know about anyone else, but if Cleansing Fire became a stunbreak again, my sustain would go up considerably. I thought it was a bit of a silly nerf to begin with though.

Churning Earth isn't showing numbers

I am not sure exactly when this started happening, but Churning Earth no longer shows the damage dealt every time it is used. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. It took me four tries to reproduce the bug in sPvP. In many cases, I have had to look to see if bleeds were applied to determine whether or not the skill actually hit the target. It is a tiny bug, for sure, but annoying when fighting in large groups with several enemies.

Geomancer's Freedom change

I think Geomancer’s Freedom is a great trait as is. It gives eles who run light on cleanse another avenue to sustain. It would be nice if it would provide regen and come down to the adept tier to mirror Dogged March, but really, that’s not even necessary.

First part. We are agreeing that those skills are lifelines, so using 2 of them for 1 stomp is horrible. Also, when that stomp could be used as an epidemic target and his method of stomping isn’t even a 100% stomp.

Well, clearly we define “horrible” very differently. I would say that getting a clutch stomp that rallies an otherwise un-ressable ally in an outnumbered fight is “awesome.” Yes, I had to use more resources than I would have liked, but it paid off, as you can see in the video.

As far as epidemic goes, it is a good strategy when you don’t need a stomp right away, but when you need a stomp right now (like when an ally is being stomped and needs rallied), it is simply not an option.

Second part. That’s why it’s a challenge to him.

I was basically trying to get across the point that your challenge is unreasonable. You can’t just go out and perform a stomp that changes the tide of a battle. Those opportunities don’t present themselves every day. It makes more sense to follow the path of logic. We know that a stomp can be game-changing. We know that a wurm stomp can be performed in combat. As a result, we can conclude that a wurm stomp has the potential to be game-changing. It is just that simple.

Also, that’s a cool story bro. However, you had a guaranteed stomp (if you didn’t die) with 1 skill, it just so happened that you needed to use 2 for the stomp.

Aw. I thought we were playing nice? I am disappointed.

It’s not a guaranteed stomp if I down, as you pointed out. I was likely to down in that situation so I ended up using two skills, both of which have very long cooldowns.

Also, your little trick doesn’t work 100% of the time. I’ve stopped thieves 100s of times from doing their shadowstep stomps. Here’s a video for you.

This is silly. Of course, Methane’s “little trick” isn’t 100% successful. No stomp is guaranteed. I cannot tell you how many Mist Form stomps have been thwarted by enemy thieves stealthing my target. Also, as a thief who performs Shadowstep stomps on a daily basis, I think I can count on my hand the number of times I have been interrupted. Just because there is the possibility that something might not work, it does not mean that you should not go ahead and try if the situation calls for it. You know, your attacks are not 100% successful either. They can miss or be dodged or blocked or whatever else. Are you going to stop bursting because it might not work?

I’m going to have to say it’s almost always a horrible idea, unless 1v1. Those other classes can get away with it becuase, they have multiple skills to break contact with.

While some of what you say is true regarding the ease with which other classes can stomp compared to the necromancer, like Methane said, sometimes situations do arise where the benefits of a wurm stomp outweigh the drawbacks. Without going into too much depth on class balance, every class has to go through the same cost-benefit anaylysis when they expend resources to get a stomp. On my elementalist, I can stomp with Mist Form and Armor of Earth. However, those two skills are also my life lines. If I use Armor of Earth to get a stomp, it goes on a 90 second cooldown. It is also my only source of stability and one of two stunbreaks. As a class that relies entirely upon mobility to survive, one stun can be the death of me in an outnumbered fight as I have absolutely 0 tanking ability with 15k health and no way to move. Of course, necromancers and elementalists are quite different in how they sustain, but the general point is that every time you secure a stomp, you are taking a risk. It is your assessment of the situation and your implemenation of the stomp that determines your success.

I have a challenge for you since you say it “it can turn the tide of battle” Make a video where you use that trick in an outnumbered fight to save the day and win. I see you use it in your video, but never for a stomp, and most of the time you were not getting focused.

I understand why you would want to see it in action before concede your point. However, it is probably a little too much to expect MethaneGas to produce such a clip at your request. You cannot just walk into a battle and perform a game-changing wurm stomp at the drop of a hat. Those moments are both awesome and infrequent, but they do indeed occur. That stomp can be the stomp that takes out the dangerous foe that is giving you or your group the most trouble or it can be the stomp that rallies your ally in the middle of a sea of red names. Those clutch moments can make a huge difference in the outcome of a fight. For example, it is somewhat hard to see, but at this point in the video Methane posted, I used Armor of Earth to secure a stomp, and started taking too much damage so I had to end the stomp in Mist Form as it came off cooldown (I would have used Mist Form originally had it not been on cooldown). As a result, my only stunbreaks were on a 75 and 90 second cooldown, which would normally be a waste, but it was worth it in this moment because I rallied our support warrior and I knew I would be able to recover. Similarly, you may perform a wurm stomp that is just as crucial, but you might have full health and a full bar of deathshroud to help you recover from your loss in mobility. There are far too many variables in these types of situations to go over everything, but ultimately, while wurm stomping might not be something you wanna do every time an enemy downs, it definitely has it’s place in your build if you choose to take it.

Also, I just want to say thank you for being so nice in your dissent. It is deeply appreciated and I am glad that we can have a nice discussion even if we can’t agree.

Yes, they use one long cooldown, not two… thats a big difference.

That isn’t necessarily true in every case. The situation I cited for Brode above is a perfect example of when I have had to use two very high cooldown skills just to get a stomp. Sometimes the cooldowns are worth it.

That doesn’t mean that i don’t believe that MethaneGas does nicely with this setup and i very much enjoyed the video. If it works out for him and his group then who am i to tell him otherwise.

I think that’s what it ultimately comes down to- what your group needs and what you prefer. I roam with Methane on a daily basis and he is invaluable to our group. While it might not be everyone’s cup of tea, his spec is certainly effective and he has saved me and has single-handedly turned the tide of battles with it. Those who take the time to learn his set up will not be disappointed if they enjoy this style of play.

I always wondered if we would get some good press in the forums for BRL. Hard work over a long period of time to build the guild up and now. NOW I see we get true love. The crying gif is fantastic and I couldn’t have asked for anything more precious. TY, ty, ty. With the match forums being eliminated bitter tears fall.

Well, all in all, BRL is a great guild. I believe the issue is with a single BRL, who is obviously not representative of the guild as a whole. He was just upset because Kat and I killed him and the pug group he was running with, which was mostly upleveled anyway, so he partied us, reported us, and called us hackers among other things. However, while it was silly of him, it in no way reflects on BRL as a whole. Everyone else from BRL has been nothing but nice, which is why I accepted his party invitation to begin with. You guys are great and have solid players and tactics. I have seen the epic video of the naked camp defense. ;P

I’m sorry if it came off wrong because we think you guys are awesome.

Speaking of, after being on ET for a few days, I have concluded that you guys are pretty awesome. It’s been really fun, and I’ve met a lot of super nice people from [BS] and [DI]. I was expecting to be shunned as a spy. In any event, perhaps we can try a GvG next go around?

Nice vids, mind sharing your gear setup? You seem to do a solid amount of damage without being too squishy, Im guessing its some mix of soldier/knight or maybe some celestial.

That’s a good guess. xD
I basically run a full Knight’s set up with Celestial trinkets to round out my stats. There is probably better way to balance stats, but I find it really hard to give up all the little things Celestial gear provides.

Hello all. The first WvW season has finally come to an end. Despite getting 7th place, it was a good run for those of us on Devona’s Rest. With that said, it has been a while since I have posted anything on the ele forums, and I thought it might be nice to contribute something to the community. This last week, with the help of a close friend, I put together a few clips of our guild roaming around in EB.

Please note that this video is purely for entertainment purposes. I know I make a lot of mistakes. It has been a while since I have roamed on my ele for any significant period of time so there are a few moments that are less than glamorous. Please be gentle. xD

Good fun and good fights tonight. Ran into [OHai] when we were starting to dwindle off, still a fun time fighting you guys, hopefully next time we cross paths we won’t be down to 3 players :| (solid focus fire on your guys part though).

Yeah, it was fun. There was a little too much siege for our taste, but it was fun, for sure.

Got accused of hacking by someone who sent a /p invite, so we were on a decent run earlier in the evening. All in all fun stuff tonight, keep the good fights coming.
