DD vs Staff damage...Why is that?

The way I notice it works is otherwise. It’s like every Meteor is an individual FireBall and that only 5 targets get hit within the AOE radius.

That is what I meant, yes, though I may have worded it confusingly. My apologies. To me, that means that it’s one of the few AoEs that actually packs a punch against large groups. But your mileage may vary.

D/D + Staff build - Boons?

in Elementalist

Posted by: ThiBash.5634

ThiBash.5634

Staff by comparison has at most a few combos almost all revolving around Eruption from Earth (such as Eruption -> Lava Font or Eruption -> Geyser or Eruption -> Static Field). Other than this, there’s very few abilities that really play off each other and in general most Attunements in staff are separate from each other. It also doesn’t benefit nearly as much from Evasive Arcana anymore (which is what that old 10/10/10/10/30 build was) since it’s rarely feasible to drop a field down, switch and roll into it since you’re very rarely close up. It’s not terrible, but it’s a far cry from what it once was. This all makes the number of actual boons you have up at one time pretty limited to usually maybe few stacks of Might, Regen and Vigor.

Have to disagree there, sorry. For one thing, you can also place fields and the swap TO earth, and get some projectile finishers (works especially well with Frozen Ground). Also, you can combine skills like Gust and Static Field to ensure your target gets stunned by the field. You can also cast a Meteor Shower, then switch to Water mid cast for Ice Spike. Assuming you use Arcana, this will increase your shower’s damage substantially.

Also, with boon duration runes, Elemental Surge will ensure permanent swiftness, protection, regeneration and might on any elementalist build.

Metero Shower hits for less since it’s supposed to hit multiple targets in a very large radius. However, due to the 5-target limit of AoEs, you will almost always do less dps with it than just spamming Fireball.

You do realize that the hit cap is per pulse on Meteor Shower, not all of the pulses combined?

Think of Guild Wars 2 as chess. They provide you with the pieces, but you have to play the game. You can’t cheat by getting an extra queen simply for having played 2 years longer than your opponent. That’s just not how the game works.

Output is also would not be the same considering that armor class output and the learned recipe output is automatic prohibition of input. Whereas this is input acceptance and prohibition. Underlying code is way different as well which you have agreed. Yes they could do utilize the gear check if the gear check was programmed right but writing a message to the screen is 1000 times more costly than a single if statement comparing the 2.

You come across as a programmer. I for one at least, am not. When I say ‘similar to’ I purely mean the visual way. For me as a player, a warning message in the item tooltip would be a good solution. That it’s often not as easy for the programmer to code, I fully understand, but on the other hand, that’s not my (primary) concern.

I’m sorry about the confusion about similarity. The only thing I meant by it was the how the item tooltip should preferrably look.

Similar they are not. I already said that light/medium/heavy is different and can not be compared and explained why. Let me explain it again. Armor is limited to your class and at no point can you wear that other class of armor. Recipes are also different. You can only learn 1 recipe at a time, and you can not force yourself to learn it again. They are not the same thing as a ring that you are already wearing and can take off and reapply at any point.

The similarity would lie in the output. The coding behind it may be a bit more tricky, I’ll grant you that.

Thing is, the tooltip already does an automatic ‘gear check’ by also showing your currently equipped item. That ‘gear check’ could maybe be utilized to compare both items, and display a warning if they’re both the same, unique item.

Sure, it wouldn’t warn players having the item in their inventories or banks. But seeing as that most players equip their ascended stuff as soon as they get it, it would be a big step in the right direction.

EDIT: As for your comment on deductive reasoning, I can understand your point, but like your kindness in asuming that I understand it, you also assume that people are as good in figuring out stuff as you yourself are. As noble as that outlook on life is, the reality is sadly, not quite so. For example, I’ve recently had to explain to a guildie of mine why his ascended gear didn’t protect him from agony. Which makes perfect sense to us, but to him, ascended equalled agony resistance. You could argue that players should just fall on their faces, and then learn from it. You could also argue that you should try and help players understand the game. I think we just have different views there.

Could be that ArenaNet thought that would be a bit too defensive. They’re very much against tanks/healers in the game. Also, seeing as how they’re currently more likely to nerf bunker builds than buff them, adding full defense gear seems unlikely to happen.

gameplaywise. As in, they wouldn’t be practical for travel. You can’t give them speed boosts higher than running because it would upset game balance. Also, the zones are smaller than in WoW, and more cramped in locations. For mounts to work gameplaywise you need big open fields, not shallow mountain passes or old ruins.

As vanity items they would work yes. But it’d cost a lot of resources to make them, and I totally understand why Anet won’t go into that right now.

Melee will deal more damage than ranged, single target will deal more than AoE, and so on.

The elementalist, despite what it may hint at, is not a top of the line damage dealer. The same can be said for the guardian, which is pretty defensive minded.

If you want oompf, I’d recommend a thief or warrior…and then melee.

You can not compare the two. Cause light/medium/heavy are of different classes and are using that class to limiting factor. Basically if your wearing light you can never wear the other 2. Its a restriction set by the servers that they implemented. Any class can wear any ring but only 1 of that type of ring. In coding wise these 2 things are completely different and must be treated differently. Plus by adding your message people do not learn to read or think. Nor does it help the OP considering he bought it with laurels and no message would ever be created for that considering it would be confusing.

If see the tooltip for armor you cannot wear, you get a message.
If you see the tooltip for a recipe you already know, you get a message.
If you see the tooltip for an unique ring you have already equipped…what’s the harm in displaying a message?

As Red Falcon stated, unique doesn’t always mean that in every MMO, and not everyone that plays Guild Wars 2 is a MMO veteran. If anything, even if you disagree with the solution, ArenaNet has already set a precedent by adding the message to other, similar cases. It’s not unreasonable to ask them to do so again now.

Ok, let’s approach this in a different way:

When playing a scholar character, you get a warning message on medium and heavy armor indicating that your profession can’t wear it. Would it be too much to ask to add a similar message when you’ve already got said unique item equipped?

I give up.

Glad you approve my suggestion. I knew we could find a solution that would be acceptable to all players.

By the way, you still haven’t adressed the fact that these ‘unique’ items are statistically identical, and can even contain the same stats in terms of infusions.

That system is not wanted or needed. For instance my one character could be holding 10 of the same unique ring and I could just be holding them for the sake of holding them. The rings could be used by my alts. Your system would prevent that and prevent their use by alts. The only system that would work is the system that is already in place. Its not Anets fault if people can not use logic correctly or deductive reasoning or actual reading skills.

The fact that there’s a post about this shows that such a system is wanted. Secondly, the solution would only be a pop-up warning window at vendor NPCs, where you actually spend resources to get something. You’d still be able to get as many rings as you have inventory slots.

Wow. You just don’t get it, do you?

I do. You want to be able to obtain items on one character and then move them to others. I for one would rather protect players from spending a month’s worth of laurels on an item they cannot use. If they want it on their other characters, they can just hop to those…laurels are account bound anyway. As for drops, they don’t have to change.

All I’m saying that, at the very least, a popup window could come up telling the player that their current character is already wearing that item, and that they cannot wear more than one version of the unique item.

Also, you haven’t adressed my other point yet, about the unique items being statistically identical.

Yeah, it’s more than clear that you don’t understand the difference between “account bound” and “soul bound.”

It’s also clear that you don’t understand you can have a unique soul bound and a unique account bound item.

How about this then:
The unique aspect of items could use a mechanic that restricts players from buying more of the same item if they already have that item equipped, in their inventory, or in their bank.

Clear now?

The entire point of making something unique is so you can’t stack certain stats with the same item.

But that’s the thing…other than the costs of the infusions, you can get the exact same item for the other slot.

If you disagree, then please tell me what the difference is between these two items:

Snaff’s Gyre with a Mighty Infusion
Yakkington’s Ring with a Versatile Mighty Infusion

Other than the cost to make the second infusion, that is.

Difference being “unique” isn’t a mechanic like soulbound at all. You can have an account bound unique item and you can have a soul bound unique item.

I’ll just ignore your snarkiness on the fact you don’t understand the difference.

Fine, I’ll spell it out for you:
The unique aspect of items could use a mechanic that restricts players from buying more of the same item, in a way that is similar to players being unable to remove soulbound items from their bank if they’re bound to one of their other characters.

Clear now?

Sloppy programming/design IMO.

It is NOT sloppy programming/design.

It’s a well-known term in the MMO world and because some people may not know its meaning because they’re new to MMOs doesn’t mean it’s sloppy programming or design.

That’s like saying since somebody new to driving doesn’t know what “standard transmission” is the car is poorly-designed.

Funny…when I first started playing MMOs, I didn’t see a guy sitting next to me with an extra keyboard and mouse, to yell at me whenever I almost run over virtual grandmothers.

Adding that single word doesn’t mean anything unless you’ve experienced it before. Seeing as how soulbound has a mechanic that prevents you from moving it to other characters/accounts, I fail to see why unique doesn’t prevent you from buying 2 of the same item (without at least as much as a warning message). I mean, you get warned when you try to salvage greens…but not when you’re about to waste 35 laurels?

Then again, with infusions working the way they do (and all versions available to all slot types) I fail to see why the different slot types were added to begin with. They only serve to complicate the game, nothing else.

Because they are account bound, not soul bound.

A mechanic LIKE soulbound. But if that wasn’t clear to you just by reading my post…need I finish this sentence?

Whenever your class lives or dies by 3 utilities, you know you are not well designed.

This is true.

The thing is, on a profession where standing still equals defeat, nothing beats a cantrip. Add to that the amazing traits that cantrips get, and it’s no contest.

To be honest, I get the feeling that you’d easier get away with a no-cantrip build in PvP than in PvE. At least in PvP, if you get stunned, it’s for 1-2 seconds. In PvE, it seems that stuns keep getting longer in duration, with more frequency and less time to react if you see them coming at all.

PvE, I cannot play without at least Armor of Earth. Sad but true. And even then, I sometimes wished I had 3 of them.

It’s not competition because if another guild starts it, and your guild gets a couple of hits in you BOTH get credit for it

That would be true, if the guilds didn’t scout out the bosses before they start the bounty. If their scouts lose the boss, they’ll have to look for it again. Therefore, it’s not in their best intrest to tell others where it is. Nor is it to help them defeat it more quickly. If their guild is gonna activate the bounty in a few minutes, they’d be better off not participating so there’s a better chance the fight is still going when their guild does activate the bounty.

What I’m pointing out here, is that what may look good on paper doesn’t work that way in practice. At least, not with some guilds on my server.

Understandable. I didn’t post to say “OMG, U R WRONGZ N00B!”. I merely wanted to share a situation in which the Invulnerability mechanic makes it very tough to progress when it kicks in.

The funny thing is, that most gamers would love to have games where terrain plays an integral role. Instead, we get the same old permastun/instagib ‘challenges’. This forces players to flee into exploits (which do use the terrain) which then get fixed and take even more possibilities out of the game.

My main gripe is that, when I use skill and smarts to beat an enemy, I get punished by game mechanics whereas if I facetank it, I can beat it.

there are maps all over that show the bounties path. follow them counter clockwise and profit. you can’t hide the npc off the path.

This is true. However, in maps like Lornar’s Pass, this little trick can easily cost the seeking guild 1-2 extra minutes. And for smaller guilds, that’s not always luxury time. My guild for example, needs every second they can get.

Isn’t this the point of bounty? The first find the bounty receives the reward. It promotes competition between guilds.

It may be the point yes. But I find that strange seeing as in every other instance, ArenaNet wants to promote teamplay.

Also, that doesn’t adress my second point…people joining the bounty event without fighting only to make it last longer, in case their guild may need that boss in the next 7 minutes.

You could always ask non guild players in the map, if they seen a bounty. And reward them in game with some gold once it is killed.

There are still helpful players, true. But I’ve recently seen this type of behavior from the large guilds on my server. Small guilds have it tough enough without big guild deliberately sabotaging them.

It happens all the time in the Rata Sum fractal. It gets double annoying because those mobs (that have ranged attacks) also have AoE knockback attacks (which have circles that are very hard to see on very small platforms) and you can only damage them if the entire team stands next to them on their own platform.

And the best thing, if you get thrown off, they can still hit you when you’re at the res point.

The thing that worries me that while this will effectively counter D/D eles, it will also severely hurt staff elementalist. The d/d’s can handle it, but the staff builds would be crushed utterly.

The right way to play at the moment is to zerg rush stuff. Wheter it’s dragon bosses or guild bounties, or even karka farming or running through dungeons using exploits and short cuts. You’re not supposed to casually enjoy this game.

The trolling is strong with this one. I’ve actually had the most fun casually exploring the huge world on my own by far. I also like to trade and help out people in low level zones and story dungeons. Lots of stuff to do.

My apologies. I did not intend to troll. I’m merely trying to summarize my non-solo experiences lately. And most of the popular ways of playing seem to include one or more of the above. I’ve actually stopped doing dragon events because they’re no longer fun. If I’m lucky, the lag allows me to just spam auto attack. If unlucky, I barely make bronze reward.

It was supposed to be in the game already. Then it was supposed to come a short while after launch. Now, it’s not even worked on.

A big letdown, but what can you do about it…

Huh? No, Anet never even hinted that it would be in the game by now, or at release or anytime soon. They said they would very much like to do it and it’ll most likely happen down the road – no timetable at all.

Proof otherwise?

It was advertised during the first or second Gamescom.
