Omadd's Machine Impact on the RP community?

in Lore

There is a third alternative: use your story but remain vague about the details.

Instead of ‘being the one that killed Scarlet’ you could have been present at the battle for Lion’s Arch. Instead of being the ‘commander of the Pact’ you can be a high-ranking member of the Pact. Instead of ‘saving Destiny’s Edge’ you could have met them. And instead of having used Omadd’s machine, you could have been in Dry Top recently.

You still know what really happened, but you don’t have to go blabbering about it to every random stranger you meet right?

So the reason she saved Lion’s Arch is because she destroyed it before someone else did?

I guess that’s how criminals reason…‘I saved the person from being robbed because I took all the valuables from their house!’

My guess is that staff eles, which are finally use in sPvP, would be utterly destroyed by the ranger in this balance update. So it could be that these planned changes, which have the potential to be somewhat overpowered, are countered partially by some other changes they have yet to finalize.

New armor tournament only

I seem to recall them saying it will be possible to obtain them in the future (probably through some sort of reward-track or something I would think).

If that were true, then it’d be acceptable to me. I wouldn’t mind if it took say, 1 or 2 years so PvPers can make the most of the bragging rights first.

Another option could have been to make the gemstore buyable and give them to the winners for free.

And to be fair, what else could they have given them? If there had been no rewards people would have complained just as much.
No matter what they do people will complain.

Emotes, finishers, a headpiece, or a costume, title and/or a new star next to their name.

The thing is, the masses only get costumes (which are impossible to dye, look the same on all and cost gems to boot) while a select few get armors (which vary per weight class, are mouch more customizable and look better than the costumes do anyway).

I’m sick of being forced to overpay for unusable outfits and I don’t see why Anet would design actual armors for just a select few.

Anyone have any guesses on what it’ll be?

I’m guessing it’ll be better defense against projectiles, jduging from the Ranger rebalance. Between the shorter cooldown on Entangle and the near instant 6k+ damage spike on Rapid Fire, unless eles get something, they’ll be insta downed by rangers.

Yes, I know you can technically defend against it. But boy, you’ll need some fast reflexes for that. Rapid fire looks insane…

If the devs ever wonder why players think they’re not listening, then this is a perfect example. In the points of intrest youtube movie, Peter Fries laughs about how he added Drooburt just to see how much gold the players would waste on him. He apparently finds it very funny that we spent all our hard earned cash on an npc that doesn’t do anything.

Talk about insulting. With this type of people making the game, no wonder everything is bugged and unfinished. And to think we’re paying that guy’s salary…just to be used for his own personal amusement.

Maybe I should get a job at ArenaNet. I’d get to pester people all day, do a barely passable job, and get paid for it? Sounds like a sweet deal…

If we look at games like League of Legends, we occasionally get champions that have their entire skillset and passives revamped, on top of bi-weekly balance. When something doesn’t works, it gets iterated upon.

The main difference between LoL and Guild Wars 2 is that in LoL, if a champion doesn’t work, you can easily switch to something else that works just as well.

In Guild Wars 2, even if there are alternatives to the top builds, you need to either grind a lot of new gear, or swap professions and grind even more to get back to top level.

With LoL, you can just switch champions. And don’t they have like, 5 skills each or something?

Medicine in Tyrie

in Lore

Posted by: ThiBash.5634

ThiBash.5634

My guess would be that there are different kinds of healing. Some are magical, some are mundane, some are both. It may very well be that magical healing requires a great amount of skill, and thus cannot be used for everyone simply because there aren’t enough skilled magical healers. Another reason could be because magical healing requires constant effort on the caster’s part. The crashed Zephyrites for example, may need healing attention for longer periods of time. It could be that conventional medicine is simply more suited for that. Rangers for example, would use Troll Unguent medicine while elementalists can call on magical healing…and mesmers can just fool themselves into thinking they’re effective healers.

And finally, it could be that not everything works on everything. Some injuries require potions, or bandages, or surgery. Other, more superficial injuries, can be treated through spells. But some injuries are simply to severe to treat ‘on the fly’.

Just a few random thoughts, hope it makes sense. Basically, what I’m saying is that magical healing doesn’t neccesarily negates the need for mundane healing.

I think the more logical conclusion is that we did not see the Eternal Alchemy. Maybe it was a previous recording of what was seen by Scarlet…maybe it was just imagination.

There are just too many errors in the movie and lore for it to make sense to be the Eternal Alchemy.

If it is though, then maybe we should consider the fact that it could exist out of time, and thus there doesn’t need to be a chronology to it.

I think you’re misinterpeting it. Its not about the centaurs working with the Kournans.

It’s the fact that Varesh manipulated her people by making the majority think the centaurs weren’t slaves, and in that way prevented major protests.

The decieved lesser beings are in fact, her people, who think that the centaur-forged blade they’re adding a hilt to came from a freewillingly coöperating centaur smith.

your toons - with lore or against it?

in Lore

ThiBash.5634

Ok, I’ll go first then.

Hmm…well, the thing is, my characters don’t usually have a fully written background story. It’s often more a loose combination of personality traits and loosely coupled events.

My human elementalist for example, is a book smart noble. She’s the descendent of my GW1 elementalist, who got stuck in Tyria while representing an ancient Canthan trading guild. An earth elementalist at heart, she’s got a working relationship with Melandru but considers her more of a ‘strong earth spirit’. She’s a pacifist and prefers to stay at home with a good book over travelling the world. However, she knows it’s not possible because she has responsabilities to the Priory (which is why she still travels a lot). She also loves cats. She’s also a teamplayer, not a leader, and was more than happy to push Trahearne to the front when the Pact needed someone.

Instead of writing an actual background for my character, I tend to write up short stories about events in their lives. For example, when my character got a set of golemancer runes, I wrote a short story (than I can no longer find, sorry) from the perspective of her cat, where she showed my Asuran engineer that she could conjure up an ‘elemental golem-projection’. At the end of the story, the Asura was genuinely impressed that she mastered something a 10-year old Asura could do. My character ended up crying, being consoled by her cat.

Whenever I role-play, I tend to use this as the basis to form my responses. My character would be meek, not very eager to express her opinion. She wouldn’t be at the forefront and she certainly wouldn’t go about saying “let’s charge in and kill ’em”. She would have a lot of theoretical knowledge but little practical. Instead of being the main focus of the story, she’d be ‘part of the support group’ mainly because she’d be so hesitant to act. She does what she must, but not always what she wants.

I suppose it doesn’t necessarily mess up the story (yet), but it is an oddity to me.

ArenaNet needed a reason to ‘pause’ the story at this point so they can work on the next chapter. It’s not very neat I’ll admit, but the OOC reason is obvious so I think we can overlook this. I mean, it had to be done somehow.

*Spoilers* Machine at the end

ThiBash.5634

So about Omadd’s machine…do you guys really think it shows ‘the Eternal Alchemy’?

I haven’t made up my mind personally, but there are a few things that make me question it.

First of all, it’s too perfect that a philosophical theory thought of centuries ago turns out to be true. This is not something relatively minor like the Higgs-Boson…this is the entire workings of the universe…displayed in the exact same manner as we’d ‘like to see it’. A bit too convenient.

Second, there’s only 1 Pale Tree. From the Sylvari personal story, we already know that there must be at least 2 pale trees, possibly more. So what makes this particular tree so important? Also, where are the Spirits of the Wild and the human gods in this equation? The latter I can understand, but the former should at least have been visible.

Finally, the device has been modified by Scarlet and yet we still haven’t gone mad. That seems highly unlikely. My main character was a human, but sylvari play the story too (I’ve even seen mooses, tigers and quaggans). It just doesn’t make sense (yet).

So my current feeling is that this machine works more like the Pale Tree’s future visions. You can see possibilities in a way you can comprehend, showing you part what you need to see and part what you want to see. Like a huge drug trip of some kind.

Anyway, these are my thoughts but I haven’t made up my mind yet so I’d love to hear what you guys think.

This would mean that Snaff is still “alive” inside Kralkatorrik’s brain if such a thing were possible.

Snaff controlled the dragon’s mind, briefly, and was still physical. There was no mega chunk of magical energy involved.

Scarlet died on the biggest leyline intersection in the world, and something directly linked to the dragon. The movie showed energy going through her body too.

There’s even a book in the new release that suggests ghosts are some form of energy residue. They’re setting her up to attack the Pale Tree in the form of the dragon. I just know it.

What I’ve heard od WoW rping communities is they tended to scorn and laugh at ANYTHING outside the box. Half-elf? BAD CHARACTER. Troll from a clan other then the horde one or two? BAD CHARACTEr. etc.

Funny. The server I was on was usually very tolerant. Unless you pretended to be a new, better lich king, with powers of the light. Or a Scarlet.

Also, given how Sylvari wake up fully grown and WITH the knowledge of their class for the most part (basics at least)… It fits. Besides, those that only glanced at her backstory thought she learned everything. The officially backstory explicitly said she didn’t learn all that she could have with each race.

Like you say, the basics. The first official backstory was that she graduated from all 3 colleges. Only later was it fixed. And that still doesn’t explain the dozens of other, unrealistic things she pulled (wherever she got all the metal for the marionette or her armies is still vague).

Then there is the fact she got her mind slowly controlled by another being, one which is implied to ALSO been a factor in a lot of her stuff.

This was actually the first moment she finally became somewhat bareable. But it’s also a pretty cliché excuse to overpower your characters.

But I don’t see the new characters as an obstruction to the story.

It’s not about the characters.

There’s quite a bit of spoken dialogue in the past LS update. In total though, it’s what? 20 lines per character? It’s hard to tell a full story with just that. Meanwhile, they could have been given say, 200 lines of written text per character in addition to what they have now.

It could be stuff like: “Do you think we should inform the Pale Tree Marjory?” “How’s Rytlock been doing Rox?” “What are you recording in those log entries you keep ordering Scruffy to take, Taimi?”

The spoke text is nice, and should remain in the game. But it’s NOT enough to convey the entire story. So why not add more written dialogue?

I think the main reason I have so much issues with this game is because I have done my research. There were numerous articles with cool features before the game was launched. When I went to Gamescon in Germany, they showed a bunch of cool features in a gorgeous game. There would be little grind and no mandatory content! You could jump right in and not have to work your way towards max level before you could enjoy the content. I had to play that one.

Sadly, a lot of what was promised ultimately didn’t get delivered. Ascended gear added a lot of grind, and recently it got worse with the trait revamp. As it stands, the game only starts to become semi enjoyable at level 30. The main storyline feels rushed after you get past the orders chapter. Dungeons have turned into stack-and-smack. There is no personalized home instance, no minigames, no interactive environment.

The combat system and jumping puzzles are the only thing about this game that is finished, and they rock. But in all other respects, GW2 is really just a mediocore game. And the Living Story isn’t even that, thanks to a certain Sylvari.

I don’t feel the voice acting is holding the story back at all. If anything, it brings it to life. Sure it would be cheaper to use just text boxes, but I don’t want it cheaper. They made a great leap with the transition from GW1 to GW2 by making everything voice acted. I don’t think I’d want to go back to a none-voice acted world.

But it is holding the story back. You cannot get all the details into a few lines of spoken text. I’m not asking for Anet to remove spoken text. I’m just asking them to expand the lore outside of the main stories by adding more written dialogue to npcs. That way, those that want to know more can read to their leisure, those that don’t can skip it, and it hardly costs anything to add.

You yourself commented that you enjoyed reading the new books. That’s exactly the kind of thing I’m talking about.

Items ruined by dye options

Did you guys also notice that some items are effectively ruined by the way dye applies to them?

For example, the new adventurer’s mantle shares a color between the goggles strap and the mask area. Who designs such a thing? The strap should have shared wih the goggle area instead, so you can make a leather-realistic strap and still have a colorful mask. Now if you dye one properly, the other just looks silly.

The same happened with the Trickster pants. It’s an awesome item, but why did Anet match the belt color with the skirt? It looks so ugly that way…

And the ‘best’ news is that none of this will ever be considered critical by ArenaNet, so not only will it never be fixed, they will continue to make more of these silly mistakes…

The fact that you don’t control the ability does allow for a much shorter cooldown though. Air Elementals can stun several times during the golem’s cooldown. The elementals also have more abilities, and tend to do more damage. So I’d say they’re pretty equal.

The only reason FGS is better in dungeons is because of the wall exploit. If you’re gonna stack and burst, it rules. But I’m not playing the game to provide cheats for underdeveloped players. So I bring the glyph regardless. If that warrants a kick from the group, then it wasn’t a good group to begin with so no big loss.

All the time. It greatly depends on wheter we’re winning the fight or losing it. If we’re losing, I call on an earth elemental to take the pressure off. If I need burst damage, I get the fire elemental. If I need dps on a boss with a strong melee attack, I get out the Air elemental. If I think I can get some mileage out of chill, I use ice elemental.

The glyph is my staple elite and I use it for a lot of different things. I wouldn’t even trade it for Supply Crate if I got the chance.

So we’re calling unfinished content ‘design decisions’ now? Funny, because to me, it’s still a bug.

Would you please make a hotfix for the wind crystal jump not jumping or the lightning tether crystal not taking you where you target but stopping midair?

its an al, and it can get killed easily in the crossfire, it has low dmg besides fire elemental, yes rock one wont die so easily, he wont do any dmg either, rock elemental is nice for taking the unreflectable arrows from the golem in harpy fractals, u can hide behind, but it rly has too low use, i prefer taking fgs, use skill 3 of it, then drop it to continue w my normal dmg in pvp/wvw(roam)

Have you ever tried Air Elemental? I mean like, really tried? It’s dps is almost as high as the fire elemental (it takes only 1-2 more attacks to down a target dummy) and if you position it properly, it can easily last the full 60 seconds. It also has a semi-spammable stun that works rather well in PvP. The earth elemental is a great tank and can make dungeon runs with suboptimal pugs a lot easier. It also does great distracting bosses so your team can focus on dps instead of dodging and healing. And the uses for ice elemental are obvious.

The main benefit of the elite though, is that you can pick the elemental you need, depending on the situation. That’s pretty useful.
