You don’t create anything within the Mystic Forge. You’re just bartering with Zommorros.

I yield to the semantics.

. . . and Zommorros is a bit of a . . . how do I put this nicely . . . no, don’t think I can, so I’ll just shake my head and shrug.

I think the key to a developer working through this (other than not offering guild rewards at all) is to set the pace so the big guild of highly motivated players maxes out the rewards in a month, and the small guild takes a year. With enough granularity that the small guild sees something, however small, every few weeks. And clear and unambiguous discussion of the tradeoff (transparency) so that everyone understands the reasoning and why the big guilds have nothing left to strive for.

Given the content that’s come out so far? Yeah, I kind of see that’s a big possibility. Heavy time-consuming guilds will get everything soon, more casual guilds about three times as long, but still being able to earn it.

And yes, I split them that way because a small guild can do hardcore farming of Influence for their circle of friends and a larger guild can be just “hey, represent the guild if you drop in WvW so we can be on the same channel together and coordinate, otherwise don’t worry bout it”.

You should see the list of infractions I have in my mailbox. If someone notices you say anything remotely negative someone reports you and you get infracted. GW2 community cannot handle anything but rose blossoms.

You should start appealing them.

Also, I wish I could say I’m surprised, but since I also hung out on Reddit’s Minecraft sub? Yeah, I can’t say I am

I made a post about how they should not be so easy on the infractions because forumgoers are customers. The post was infracted within a minute and deleted. I don’t think they care. Neither will I. I am appealing, but not by their means. I used to pump around $50 into this game a fortnight, which was completely unneccesary but my theory was pump money into the game = development. Now Ive made a decision not to spend another cent on the game due to this. That’s my way of appealing

I really wish I could get behind you but . . .

. . . you kind of asked for that topic to get blasted away and then having an infraction put on you. A part of your head, and probably a large part, knew they were going to do that to a post “calling them out” as they do every other one which has an accusatory tone.

Also, I’ll spend money on this game when I see something I absolutely must spend money on to have. Which, so far, isn’t anything they’ve put up for offers. So shrug yay? I’m protesting?

Oh I’m in a small guild too, and we have people in that guild who have their own small guilds and pop in and out of the “main guild” which used to be an alliance in GW1. They do their own thing, slip over to chatter now and then, and it’s fine. As I’ve said elsewhere . . . we manage to get things done even though we’re small. We’re rather proud of that

As for “zerg guilds”, I have no idea what this is supposed to mean., I took it to mean large guilds trying to farm Influence off having just as many members representing all the time.

Rodgort is a name attached to fire elementalist skills in the first game, which was basically about inflicting the “Burning” status and making use of it. Back then it was (as is so much other stuff ArenaNet did) a reference to Internet culture.

Here’s a hint, reverse the spelling and Google it.

Zerg guild leaders whine that nobody wants to be in their zerg guilds now that people aren’t locked into 1 guild -> anet adds zerg guild content to force people into zerg guilds.

Why are small guilds surprised? It’s working as intended, if you read between the lines forcing guilds to merge together (or at least forcing you to represent for a zerg guild at least some of the time) was the whole point.

Maybe those “zerg guilds” should do something other than whine it’s not working and expect other people to fix their problem?

Also, looking at this . . . and the distinct lack of detailed information, how exactly does this force small guilds to merge?

Lore: Where did ascended gear come from?

in Lore

Tobias Trueflight.8350

I’m guessing if there’s any explanation it’s that the Ascended gear is from the Mists. I can back that conjecture up with a few things:

- A large part of these are evocative of heroes from the past. And Koss.
- Ones which are found, or were found, are in the Fractals of the Mists. (Laurel Merchants are probably reselling the stuff vendored by experienced explorers )
- To create them in the Mystic Forge you need essences from the Mists.

Ergo, it’s simple to draw a conclusion that Ascended gear is a manifestation of an object from the Mists and stable enough to be used outside of it.

If Treehorn was out there, he’d just wait for Ellsbury or Pedroia to make the catch, then take all the credit.

This insult only works if Trahearne takes personal credit for things he didn’t do. Which he hasn’t. At all.

The problem with the GW2 community is that they live in a bubble where everything is roses and when somebody says a bad thing about GW2, the bubble is threatened to burst so they turn into demon killing machines.

Pffft, everything is not just rose blossoms, there’s thorns in there too. I accepted a long time ago that the price for having something I like is to have some things I don’t like in the midst of it. I like to think it’s a fair estimation of how the world works. I save the nastiness for the people who try their hand at personal insults to me, rather than things I like.

I don’t think so, anonymity just makes people honest. People aren’t any worse online, they are just protected from consequence.

wasn’t there a saying “the true test of a person’s character is how they act when they are immune to consequence” (or something :P)

Thanks for the polite feedback from some of you.

For those who question why I am in such a small guild, it is because it is made up entirely of people I know in real life that I prefer playing the game with (my brother, my wife, and two of my friends). We all have busy schedules, so the idea of committing others to the guild seems disingenuous to their potential ambitions.

I also had the feeling that some events definitely seem do-able for small guilds, but others that require multiple groups would be difficult with only 5 folks. I most definitely read the blog, but I was still left with the question of “what is the minimum guild size for this content?” after reading it, and, as I can see by the replies, many others have been left with this question as well.

Well there’s no answer yet, because nobody knows. All that is known is that open-world events will scale for attendance and you don’t need to be in that guild to “attend” the event and get rewarded.

And I’m in a “small” guild too. It’s got a lot of people so to speak but we’re kinda not on all at the same time. We do fairly decently when we go out and do dungeons, or areas . . . I mean, we managed to do CoF path 1 with classes other than Mesmers and Warriors

Guild Mission Concerns

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Tobias Trueflight.8350

Tobias Trueflight.8350

I don’t see a problem with small guilds staying small. If that’s what they want, a nice cozy circle of friends, then I don’t want to tell them they need more people so they can do the content.

If a guild is small because it can’t recruit people, however, maybe this can indeed help them grow if they run a couple events and get noticed.

which is fine, but they need to pro-rate the influence earned for smaller guilds. why should a larger guild have access to guild mission buffs faster because they earn influence at a faster rate by sheer numbers? does anyone have a problem with smaller guilds being able to earn influence or pay for buffs for less influence cost?

it seems a penalty is occurring for smaller guilds. Not only do they have to get more guilds to jump in, but they can’t buy things with influence at the same rate or even close to the same rate as larger ones. there is a disconnect to me there.

There’s no penalty for smaller guilds unless they want to see it as a penalty being small. I’ll explain why small guilds can work:

- Smaller guilds probably do things together, maybe since they’re all friends who really like each other’s company. This is . . . from quietly polling some folks . . . the biggest reason a small guild exists and stays small.
- Influence is gained at a greater rate if more people in the same place when events are done. So, the more members of the guild who are there (representing) the faster they gain Influence. If the small guild is pretty much all there, they’re raking in Influence.
- Therefore, they’re gaining Influence at a substantial rate.

Larger guilds may not be doing the same thing, they may be trying to capture “more people on their own = more Influence” feel. This might be true, but if they’re all over the map and not concentrated then you’re not getting it efficiently. The smaller guild may actually be out-earning you.

The wrench in these ideas, obviously, is not all small guilds are like this. And there’s the other “fix” too – one can buy Influence through Gold or Gems. So really, the size of the guild isn’t solely indicative of how fast they gain Influence.

And it doesn’t necessarily limit what they can do. Five folks who know each other, know what the others can do with their classes/skills, can cover themselves pretty well and take on content which is reasonably difficult should they choose to.

although i think the “players can drop by and help out because it happens in the open world and not instances” is a good idea, it might not help grow a small guild. players will probably tag these events like other popular dynamic events, and small guilds will continue to be small. if it works well, smaller guild i feel could use this as another recruitment tool, and make new friends.

I don’t see a problem with small guilds staying small. If that’s what they want, a nice cozy circle of friends, then I don’t want to tell them they need more people so they can do the content.

. . . yet you know that there’s a big chance it’ll be in March’s Monthly schedule. Though if they ARE open world, it’s not as big a deal, as I bet then you’d have enough guilds going: “Hey, we’re kicking off an event in the area of this waypoint/point of interest. What do you guys think about the incredible negative feedback you got for Trahearne?

Narrative Designer Scott McGough and I talked about this very topic some time ago. In short, Trahearne was intended to fill a very specific role that, in terms of both gameplay and story, the PC could not fill—an order-neutral character with extensive knowledge about Orr and the magic of undeath who could coordinate a global war effort and make the necessary plans, thus leaving the actual gameplay up to the player. Further, Trahearne’s character design was intentional in that he would be a reluctant hero who, through interacting with the player, evolved into someone who could step up to lead the Pact.

This didn’t resonate well with some players for a variety of reasons. We’re comparing external feedback with our own, since we have plans for Trahearne and other existing characters in future live updates and expansion content. We won’t spoil what we’re discussing, other than to say we’re looking at many different options for his current implementation and beyond.

Do you use the feedback you got to try improving the writing for future storylines and their characters?

Of course. We want to improve our storytelling and characterization so that it complements the great gameplay that our designers work hard to create.

Sir, that’s about what I was seeing in the character as well. However, the direction which was applied to his voice actor left parts feeling a little flat and unemotional. I’ll add in that the sylvari all have some measure of that quality in their acting so I’m going on the assumption this was a deliberate directing choice. I personally didn’t mind it too much but I can understand how others would.

I’d hazard a wager that no matter who wound up in that position, if it wasn’t the player character (which couldn’t happen for very good reasons) people were going to complain.

. . . you quickly start to favor AOE attacks over CC because the CC frankly do not provide any real means of controlling the fight.

I beg to differ. I find my few CC attacks as a ranger really are the difference between “oh crap I’m in trouble” and “well that’s done, where was I going again?”. This is especially true if taking a high-level Veteran; having Point-Blank Shot is good for me to handle things.

And as a warrior doing a story mission? Mace/Shield wound up being the difference between success and failure. So there’s that too. And yes, that mob had Defiant/Unshakable. I still managed to keep it CC’d when I needed it to allow my block skills to finish the cooldown timer.

I found I got a rather nice feeling from when me and another couple people had to retake Jolfast’s on Cursed Shore and we had problems keeping the pipes clear. About ten minutes of constant, crazy “whack-a-Risen” until someone finally wandered in and managed to allow us to finish it. Followed by moving to an understaffed push for taking out the Risen Priest of Melandru.

Sure, it isn’t special. Sometimes these events are just crushed to being finished with no struggles. And honestly there are some reading that last paragraph and rolling their eyes. But it left me feeling accomplished and that was the important thing

Okay, yes, Defiant/Unshakable is a pretty tough mechanic to deal with in some instances. And if you know what you’re doing you can really do some interesting things. (Solo champions by interruption/knockback/stun for one.) It’s just that some people don’t get it and don’t think to check it out.

As for needing to pay close attention to the status bar, it’s only one thing you need to glance at: the number on it. Only Champion/Legendary monsters have this (The purple spiky ring around the portrait) so once you learn that, you learn to glance up now and then.

Now, funny thing? I may be mistaken but Fear seems to eat a stack of Defiant and cause a monster to stand still? I’ve got a Juvenile Wolf I like using for the fear-inducing howl. I often use it on event bosses to clear the trash away from those melee-fighting the boss. (I also use “Point Blank Shot”, Longbow 4 to shave off Defiant steadily as I fight. And have recently started keeping “Muddy Terrain” on the bar for everything except the final room in the Underground Fractal. )

What would benefit is if there WAS a hint explaining Unshakable/Defiant people would get the first time they saw a mob with it. Because right now, this is relying on people to mouse-hover over the enemy boons . . . aaaaaand people barely mouse over their own boons/conditons/effects.

Okay, after a few times, I’m now officially . . . ANNOYED . . .at Dreamdark Enclave. There’s a mushroom platform at a high angle way near the top, like the second to last platform. Slightly too sharp an angle as I kept sliding off it and dying from the drop. Which means doing both the Spiral and then that again.

Add in the three veterans near the start (with a hulk, and a group of hounds), AND the mortar flowers/brambles? This is very difficult to do alone. It’s really the fall towards the end on that one platform that’s a killer since I survived with only 11 hp and then was hit by a bramble cloud to be downed. If I hadn’t had that 11hp I would have had to start all over from the Spiral.

Can we please have some sort of safety net preventing outright death? I don’t mind starting it over, but death and then having to do what amounts to two (since this is the almost-end of the second) puzzles to get back here? Even Tribulation Caverns isn’t that nasty

You should check out his writing. You pretty much described (partly) the Dragonlance series. Though he didn’t write it, he wrote a book in the world. Then there’s “The Brothers’ War” which wasn’t at all like that, “Curse of the Azure Bonds” which was interesting in its own way . . .

@Lokheit: This is exactly what I said, however I think it’s still possible to give the PC such a title retroactively. By naming the Prophecies heroes “The Ascalonians”, the Factions heroes are “Master Togo’s pupil” and the Nightfall heroes are “The Sunspears” for example. Pretty much how it is done in the GW1 ingame books. We just assume the mentioned group are the leaders, while the others tag along, depending on how far they are into the overall storyline.

Actually, Prophecies heroes would more be “The Chosen who Ascended” since that’s what defined them. There were plenty of Ascalonians who weren’t the main focus of the story and other campaigns start up inside Kryta with the White Mantle material. There were also many Chosen who . . . got a bad end. The key detail is that the hero(es) who fought through the last third of the Prophecies campaign were Ascended, met with Glint, and the instrument of fulfilling the Flameseeker Prophecies.

(Though they were not the Flameseeker, that was Vizier Khilbron.)

He didn’t earn kitten, he just gets dropped in our laps and the game goes “this is now the main character” while he succeeds at everything.
He’s not even useful from a game play perspective, he’s just another useless peon with glitchy ai that you hardly notice is there in the first place, if he was more usefull i think people would soften up to him abit, Dinky for example is quite usefull with his buffs besides his quirky personality, and i liked having him around more beacuse i thought he was helpfull rather than amusing.

Well, the main reason he succeeds at everything is because you’re around him. Though one could argue the first Battle of Claw Island was a complete failure, though not his fault. (That lies with the commander who basically said “I dare you to come kick my tail” and Zhaitan shrugged and went “sure why not?”).

He’s not the main character, that goes to Destiny’s Edge whose members show up in not just the personal storyline but in the dungeon storylines and are more instrumental in the final attack on Zhaitan than Trahearne is. (Trahearne doesn’t even show up, he just follows orders given to him to be sure the Pact is ready.)

He’s not perfect, since he spends a lot of time when you first meet him going “I don’t have a clue how I’m supposed to do any of this, the problem seems insurmountable”. Even once he gets Caladbolg he still doesn’t seem to have much idea on how to move forward. It’s not until you really get the Pact rolling into Orr in force and stomping out Zhaitan’s forces (YOU do, not him, by the way) he starts actually developing rituals to use Caladbolg’s essence to combat Zhaitan. And once he’s done there he says “okay, my Wyld Hunt is complete, now it’s your turn. Go get Zhaitan.”

As for the AI, I refuse to blame any single NPC for a problem which plagued most of my allies all over the game. Logan is a guardian who melees everything, even things you really really really shouldn’t (“Kudu’s Power Suit! Let me give you a hug!”). Other times escorts will turn around and run seven to ten strides in the wrong direction to rediscover their route so they can continue, dragging out escort missions. Oh, and they will either stop to fight any enemies on the way, or ignore them while the enemies latch onto you and keep you from protecting them.

We don't like Trahearne *Spoiler Warning* [merged]

I hope Trahearne won’t turn into kormir.2
Although I really liked Kormirs character she did steal godhood while she did nothing to deserve it imo >.>

Trahearne is even worse because his voice and everything are annoying me as well.
So lets just pray he won’t absorb the power of a dragon only to become the first sylvari god or something xD.

She didn’t steal it, she was given it. I make it a personal policy not to go around questioning gods about their antics. Except Dhuum, because I questioned whether hos caps lock key got stuck. I am not sure what happened afterwards.

Pfft, Trahearne’s part in shaping the world is done. He cleansed Orr and in essence stepped down from leading the Pact so it could be directed at Zhaitan. Right now Destiny’s Edge is riding the forefront, not Trahearne.

Sorry I let this get a bit off track as far as with the talk about the Mantle. I’ll reply to that if there’s a thread started about it there.

Some other things:

Re #2: I’d say anything that they could have prevented, they did. If it happened, they couldn’t prevent it due to being somewhere else or doing something else. Much like anyone else they can only realistically do so much before sheer volume overtakes them. Especially when you’re talking of three continents and the Far North.

Re #3: Technically, they died, at least once within the Factions storyline. It’s just the Envoys decided you were needed alive so they undid that whole messy “death” thing.

Re #4: I recall hearing that things were generally written that Ascalon’s Chosen (Devona et al) stood in for the PC anywhere they could when needing to determine what happened if the PC hadn’t been there. I’m not sure how official it is, mostly because I totally don’t remember where I heard it and when. Forum is the most likely bet, which means it’s 90% possibly something someone made up.

You do realize that the White Mantle in GW2 are…

  • The primary if not sole leadership of the bandits, and yes they’re all united.
  • Infiltrating and toying with the street gangs of Divinity’s Reach.
  • Manipulating and infiltrating the Ministry.
  • In an alliance with the Centaurs, Inquest, and Nightmare Court. (they provide experiment subjects for the Inquest, which gives the NC more torture, and get gold and weapons in return – the latter they subsequently give to centaurs along with human slaves in return for their safety (notice how Beetletun itself is never attacked, only the Beetletun Farms are? – guess who’s the biggest macho in cahoots with the WM we know of? Caudecus (via being in cahoots with bandits – its unknown if he knows of the WM or not))
  • They’re also spreading dissent among humanity in Kryta to push more citizens into joining the bandits, and via the Ministry ties are spreading drug trade and blinding the citizens with a false comfort (the constant carnivals) despite the ever-increasing amount of poor in Divinity’s Reach caused by the centaur war.
  • And they do all of this by remaining completely anonymous to the people (and even to their grunts!).

Right? That’s far from “a joke” – they’re the biggest threat in GW2 aside from the Elder Dragons because of all these connections. Yet they’re so underplayed because they’re a hidden organization that if you don’t look seriously, you’d think as you are now. The White Mantle can be blamed for just about all of Kryta’s modern problems.

It could be blamed for most of Kryta’s PAST problems too, come to think of it.

I need to figure out what storyline path takes you through what the White Mantle is up to, because mine only hinted at the fact that the bandits had higher-up connections in the city and some Ministers might be dirty. Most of what I’ve seen is just suggested by the graffiti in Beetletun and the actual amassing of bandits out in the Brisban Wilderness.

Honestly where do I go from reaching 80? Wherever I feel like. Two alts (one of which I’m enjoying), dungeons with guildmates, Fractals now and then, picking through Orr for fun situations to get myself into . . .

. . . checking the “Explorer” tabs for things to go check out . . .

How does one map WvWvW?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Tobias Trueflight.8350

Tobias Trueflight.8350

Best tool on the WvWvW completions is patience and being aware of what you’re holding so you can drop in and get what you need and get out. Why get out? Because if all you’re there for is map completion, well . . . some servers can be intensely competitive and aren’t fond of people “taking up space”. Can we just leave it at that?

So patience, awareness, and a list of what you need on a small slip of paper while you monitor. When your server changes color position, get in there and get the things you can. If you have friends, ask who needs WvW points so you can go do them in a small group. (That should cut down on the danger of being ambushed and left for dead, which is a big thing when traveling alone.) It’ll help with the couple fight-based skill points.

For Stonemist, monitor your “B” Scoreboard and if your server has the castle? Haul your butt over there.

Fundamental Issues with GW2 (opinion)

Tobias Trueflight.8350

To those that are saying gw1 was like WoW uh no. Gw1 was Gw1.

Back on topic, people on the forums know me for complaining about the #1 thing grind, grind, grind. You didn’t? comment on that and made attemps at the energy system etc. Clearly if you don’t even like what the manifesto said this game would be then this is not a game for you. If you were complaining about the manifesto being broken by ascended gear I’d back you up 100% but since your not I can’t and won’t.

Yes, yes, but we “all know” the Manifesto isn’t in effect and “doesn’t describe the actual game”, so if he wants to ignore or otherwise not bring the Manifesto into it, how is that a loss?

Your character, and it’s voice remain the same, of course, so if that’s a concern then you’re pretty much stuck with rerolling to another race.

The one-voice-per-race thing is a bit silly. With all the voice acting that was recorded for this game, they have a peer speaking in precisely the same accent as a middle class or poor person? [human obviously] Really?

Realise it’s a tiny issue in a huge game but it does bug me slightly :P

Yeah, I’d like it to have had three samples to choose from. One younger and brasher, one older and more reserved, one elderly and seasoned.

@BuddhaKeks The stuff about Kormir was mostly supposed to be a joke. I didn’t realize that Kormir was hated so much previously so I’m sure it came off that way. The only complaint about Kormir I have that I feel is valid is that anyone could have become a god because as a god she has done nothing. I can’t see why there was a need to create a new god if right after the gods just left Tyria. Anyone could have just left Tyria.

Also from a gameplay perspective Kormir did absolutely no work. Her spear does no damage and her shouts are only useful for speedbuffs (plus she always, always, always obstructs your path), however story wise she is very integral to the plot and overall a much better character than Traherne who is useless (but thats for another topic).

Gameplay, Kormir suffered from the problem other allied NPCs did – they were mostly ineffective except to draw fire. I’m not sure if it was an engine problem or a conscious design decision.

Storywise, I don’t think they knew yet they were going to “tone back” the presence of the Six until they actually started work on Eye of the North. Consider there were a few years between Nightfall being developed and GW2 taking serious shape.

About Trahearne . . . the only issues I have are related to the fact the personal story is so rigidly compartmentalized and he only shows up starting chapter five out of seven for most forms of the story. (Apparently, and this is hearsay in my mind since I haven’t seen it yet, if you’re a sylvari with a certain path he is introduced there.)

Due to the fact he’s introduced quickly and it’s essentially the second half of a GW1 campaign that he takes any kind of significance to the story? It doesn’t allow people to get to know him before he takes a significant secondary role in the story.

Due to direction, his voice actor says his lines a little flat compared to others; this is more a problem with sylvari than with him alone, since they almost all come off this way.

Finally, and this is probably an unpopular view, since his Wyld Hunt was to cleanse Orr and he did that he has little reason to be an impact on the story after this. Except, of course, to be an asset called upon when the Pact is needed. So, his character might not last for the effort put into establishing him as important.
