“Ebonhawke and Kryta must be two separate political entities. They are forbidden from merging crowns (if a ruler comes from the same family must renounce claims to the other state), sharing rulers, be in a Feudatory/Vassal relationship, or in any other form share political control between the two entities.”

- Why?? Are you also going to demand the charr legions split up? It’s no one’s business except humanity’s.

I don’t understand how this “must be done” either.

I don’t have much use for them currently. Of course, since they’re just one slot on my asuran layabout, I mean, Engineer . . . doesn’t bother me any.

Now to dispose of all this Bloodstone Dust. Someone get me a pastry dough maker, I’m going to make Bloodstone Dust Cinnamon Rolls. This is obviously a wonderful idea and nothing could go wrong.

Though, I agree liberating Elona is a Noble endeavor, but the logistics issue and unified political will would be tough to muster for such an under-taking at this time.

So would it be towards going back to Ascalon. Kryta sort of doubled-down on their intentions of having peace with the charr. Without a change of rulership, such a thing is . . . off the table.

In regards to logistics you either cross a desert heading south from Ebonhawke (which you had to gate the troops & supplies to in the first place), and/or send a fleet past Orr (which though recently liberated still contains hostile forces).

No, you don’t need to worry about that. What you do is simpler – you put plans in motion so you have supplies and personnel ready for after Mordremoth is eliminated. Then you lobby the Pact to turn their attention to tracking Kralkatorrik in the Crystal Desert. Send extra materiel along with it, intending to use that push as the spearhead and have the expedition split off after there is enough “beachhead” secured to move further.

On the political will front, it really is not in the best interests of anyone other than the Humans to re-establish contact. It would be adding an unknown political entity to the mix, which no one will no where they stand or how to interact with them.

It’s mostly a human matter, and something which does not need the authorization of anyone else. Also, all it would take were some of Elonian descent who were interested in putting their influence to work. Perhaps it’s possible to find some high-ranked in the Seraph, or even in the Lionguard. (I’d put my bets on the latter.)

Personally, I think it’d be easier to convince Lion’s Arch to tickle Jormag under the tailbase with a moa feather than to help with anything other than their vaunted and completely successful restoration project of their city (heh) . . . but a Lionguard jumping to organize it?

Even more potential in one of the three Orders which comprise the Pact deciding they need to head back south. (I could take bets on one of two which would have significant interest in it.)

In addition, any forces designated to this fight would be forces that get removed from some other fight like with the Centaurs or the Dragons. However, setting up New Ascalon would make such endeavor easier in 10 years time as now you have a whole mostly Human country bordering up to the Desert.

New Ascalon won’t work as a territory unless the charr agree. They’re less likely to agree within ten years’ time to that, than they are to allowing an expeditionary force to be built under the watchful eyes of the Legions to be sure it’s going south and not north.

In regards to the Foefire it is possible that South Ascalon was far enough away that they were not affected and/or if they were only the northern part would have Ghosts. It also would be interesting to see if the Ghosts disappear after the first King of New Ascalon is crowned at King’s Watch. The later part would put the Charr in a bind a bit.

First, we don’t know the rules of the Foefire, and never have had a full disclosure since the only real source of information on what the curse did was King Adelbern. He’s not telling anyone anything. We know there was an attempt at a ritual to dissipate the curse and it worked in a minor localized way, but the ending of it suggested this would not be something which could be repeated.

Secondly, I doubt the charr would be put in a bind if the Foefire Ghosts are removed – they are one of the few elements specifically keeping pressure on the charr and keeping their mind off other things. The Flame Legion is, for the moment, broken. The Brand is mostly secure. The dredge are more of a nuisance to the charr than a real threat, as opposed to the ogre tribes in the east. A “New Ascalon”, especially if made against the wishes of the charr and Kryta, would not put things in a bind . . .

I expect if a New Ascalon was founded and carved out against the wishes of the charr and Kryta, we’d have Iron and Blood Legion very . . . very . . . quickly put it down.

I’ve never seen systems like this be necessary amongst those that intended to use them legitimately, or anything but damaging vectors for elitism and exclusionary practice amongst the majorities that did not.

If you want to know, ask for a gear ping. If you are so worried about it that you won’t trust a gear ping, you’re clearly not playing with friends or even people you feel reasonably secure in trusting and should probably not play with them if its such an issue for you.

This sums up my personal feelings as well. So we can agree on something . . .

I don’t think the griefing or bad players getting into groups to screw them around is going to be so easily stopped, and a lot of it is being done outside of a gear check system anyway. Party hijacking, people who ping and swap out to junk gear, people who join and do nothing constructive and waste the others’ time? That’s going to continue anyway, at least until they get banned and buy another account to try again in a few weeks.

There is no harm, in my opinion. But why do we need a new system added to this game just for this?

Yes, because thats why a certain part of the community gets bashed, insulted and neglected. And im not talking about your beloved casuals …

Oh, please, don’t deflect the question by not answering it and choosing to open an attack. That is not what I asked, and not what I said.

I said I see no harm in such a thing added, when it comes right down and I cut through the personal objections I have due to past experience. Sure, it might be used poorly on casuals. Or on the “elite”/“hardcore” players equally, if you want to be honest about it. One even posted here about it, and I’m sure there are probably others who would speak up.

. . . but again, that’s not at all what I asked. I asked why do we really need to get them working on another new system to add to the game. We’ve seen what happens when they do, and it takes a while before it actually works to what everyone is comfortable with (or at least can work around).

Nobody has owned up to answering the question “why do we need them working on this ahead of other things”. There are easily a dozen things which need work more than the ability to check someone’s gear, so why should this take priority? Why should it even be considered at all, instead of some of the other things?

It’s a distraction from greater problems going on right now. That is the harm in topics like these, or asking for mounts or dueling. There are bigger things to work out before we get to those.

I also vote humanity is better served heading south to kick Palawa Joko out of Istan, Vabbi, and Kourna. It’s time us humans fixed what our ancestors broke by letting that bag of bones loose and not putting him down immediately after Abaddon was destroyed.

I mostly see zerker only groups. Sure there are a few others, but I agree with yolo swaggins. There are more elitists than trolls.

If people really want to see your gear, you can link your stuff in the chat.

And then there’s people claiming “trollers” keep an extra set of gear to ping while wearing another.

No, this is a never-ending rabbit hole of paranoia which is solved through the “gear check” which I’ve really disliked since the days where it was possible to inspect another player. I’ve been excluded more times than included or been given helpful advice on adjusting my build through it, which is enough reason for me to say I have some objections to such a system.

Even more to if it boils down to a numerical “gear score” since I played a game where I witnessed scores go up but paradoxically the characters got weaker somehow.

If you’re really worried about group trolling? Group with people you trust or have been vouched for.

Charged Quartz Crystals

Tobias Trueflight.8350

Yeah, here’s the thing . . . this doesn’t really bother me all that much. Why? I don’t really have a need for these items in bulk enough to really require them. I do need to charge up a few for my Mawdrey work, but not to an extent where it matters – I still have to collect other parts while Charging, so I need to wait? Fine. I’ll go chase Foxfire Clusters. I need tons of those still.

(THAT one I will readily complain about, even if it’s a tired and jaded “can’t we just get extractors as drops or exchanges for Geodes/Crests/Something?”)

From what little I read of the min/max details . . . Celestial and Sinister are on the far end of “useful” gear for the time needed to work on them. If the time was shortened, I still doubt they’d move up the list.

All this said? I’m not attached to the wait timer, and likewise wouldn’t give a skritt if it was removed. Especially since the products (unlike the Plant Food items) cannot be sold to players, and are more by-products to Inscriptions/Insignia. Ones which most players trying to maximize their potential skip over anyway.

The thing is, whatever they do, there will probably be a fireball. But that’s not something people in this thread can be blamed for now. There would, at any time, have been irrational complaints. But nine months later (plus however many to come), that fire has been stoked with rational complaints.

Again, it’s not about blaming someone for that inevitability. It’s the Internet – it’s almost a guarantee it must happen. I’ve been around long enough to know there’s no stopping it, and there has to be a Rule about it. Like Rule 34. (No, I’m not telling you what it is, and nobody bring up exactly what it is That’s irrelevant, other than to point out the inevitability of the thing being discussed.)

If there’s anything it’s about – it’s telling people to lay off whomever decides to explode and vomit out fiery death. Forget about it. Either enjoy the game, or don’t. That’s your prerogative. We don’t need a firebomb which goes off to get stoked by people fighting back trying to put over how it’s not a big deal.

Because it’s not a big deal, and people are still going to make a mess out of it anyway. You know what’s a big deal? The period of time where all that was said is “we’re looking at it”. It’s not even about whether or not anything was being done – those who want to believe the devs were sitting there playing cards all day aren’t going to stop believing that, and those who believe the devs seriously were working on it aren’t going to convince anyone.

It’s done and over.

It isn’t that “people are never satisfied”, it’s that ANet have spent nine months brewing dissatisfaction, and the BEST case scenario is that this nine months was a waste of time that put lots of people off the game completely. Even with a complete revert, this nine months still happened.

All right, it’s fair enough. So what should be done about it? Let’s stop harping on it and go ahead with how do we fix it? Or do we even bother trying to? I vote not to, if only because it’s pointless.

As I said above. That fireball is coming, no matter what.

If they had fixed it after a couple of months, or kept us updated throughout about problems and reasons for delays, then that fire wouldn’t be as big, nor as justified. But they didn’t do that.

First, the policy of not communicating on things in development means they cannot tell us what is going on unless that policy is changed. We shan’t discuss it further here (what’s the point?) other than to note they really didn’t have a choice if they wanted to keep their jobs. I’ve been there. It sucks. It really, really sucks. But you gotta eat, and you gotta get paid to eat. So you shut up and do your job, and you pray to all the old gods, the new gods, and any other gods you feel like making up in the wee hours of the night, that after you’re done . . . someone’s going to play your end result and go “that’s kind of cool/fun”.

Secondly, there’s zero justification for the fireball. It can be understood why it happened, and it can be agreed upon there is a reason for it happening. But that only explains it. That does not justify it. There is never justification for losing your nightsoil on people you don’t know, and aren’t face to face with. I know the Internet is built on the fundamental principles of “I don’t have to be nice to anyone” but, seriously, that’s gotta stop and people need to mature.

And yes, your points have been very nicely and politely stated. Thanks for that. I really wish we saw more . . . restraint, when discussing issues like this. Even if it’s, in the end, meaningless.

Now, I’m going to go quiet on this until such time as there’s more concrete data to talk about or someone else comes up with a neat idea I want to pick at. I’ve got a Mawdrey to cultivate.

Never expect anything and you’re rarely disappointed.

But are you ever given satisfaction for being right? I’d say the hollow feeling of being right isn’t worth the utter cynicism your quote here requires. It’s all down to personal ethos, really, but . . . I find optimism (even cautious optimism) makes me feel a lot better than simply expecting nothing but ball shots from everyone I talk to. (Verbal or otherwise.)

Oh, by the way, if you want a good idea of how to construct the feeling of truly making an epic weapon worthy of both the final product and the journey? I present to you a book to find and take a look at.

And, yes, it’s stuck in a defunct ruleset which was dying even as it was published but definitely worth a look over.

I agree that you may disagree.

So may I amend: In my opinion, there was absolutely nothing wrong with the existing system.

I mean, who was really unhappy with it?

And I would posit the point that just because “nobody is unhappy with something” is not meaning it doesn’t need to be looked at for improvement or change. I use quotes because it’s very likely there are people who were unhappy with it, or perhaps maybe just wished there was something more to it than there was.

Sure, it worked, and it was serviceable. So is the car in my driveway, or my computer. That doesn’t mean these things cannot be made better. And attempts to do that carry a particular risk – that whatever attempts to improve it might render it non-functional at worst. But if you never take the risk of change . . . well, improvement is more a matter of fortune rather than a result of effort.

It’s just in my personal ethos: it’s better to take a chance trying to improve things, even if you might fail and make it worse. And if you do fail, then you had better do everything you can to be derned certain the second time you succeed.

I really think that is a small price to pay to prevent all the scamming going on with various things. GW1 had at least a dozen trade scams I was aware of, and CS had to deal with reports on it constantly – I assume, extrapolating from the last MMO I worked volunteer CS for with direct trading.

Seriously. Ecto/Mursaat Token scams. Althea’s Ashes/Dust. “Oh, just step outside and drop it my trade is bugged.” Swapping items and hoping nobody notices they got a bad deal.

So much analysis of the contrast between two subjectives. I don’t think looking at making things ‘easier’ or ‘harder’ is the right axis to examine.

I think the present experience of acquiring a precursor, the stuff for a legendary and ultimately the legendary itself needs to be totally and completely scrapped.

Yes, and I think they should be completely Account Bound if we want to go the route of making people work for it and at the same time easier to start on the path. Of course, as buying/selling/flipping Precursors is kind of the cornerstone of the Black Lion high-tier economy? Should probably expect a lot of flak thrown over any perceived chances of ruining that 1% chance to get set for life on a random drop.

What I think it should be? Here’s an example -

What makes you think Mawdrey/Mordrem Extraction isn’t a beta test of the mechanics for just such a thing? I’ve been saying they feel a lot like things which could have been a Precursor Scavenger Hunt but either deemed not enough or needing real-world testing before going forward.

I’d rather avoid the hefty combat-focused encounter, though. Frankly, I expect there’s a lot of players who wouldn’t be able to do it and it’d frustrate them as much as the freaking Clock Tower does . . .

there’s a seventy page thread with a lot of shouting back and forth arguing not whether it’s broken or not . . . but how broken it is.

To be honest: there are tons of suggestions how to make things better.
I only suggested stuff once, the rest of the time I told about my experiences and what I expect to be future problems (that was 1 or 2 weeks after April 15th). Simply because I think that no matter what, locking traits behind content is a really bad idea, especially if you want your players to learn your game as that ain’t gonna happen this way.

I don’t care if there are suggestions on how to make it better. The majority of the arguing going on here is a few people in particular talking back and forth over the same ground, with a close second of what amounts to “update plz”/“ANet don’t care” posts.

I’m sorry, I should be more accurate. I do care the suggestions are there – that shows people actually care about this topic and are still thinking about it and putting things here in the hopes they’ll get noticed rather than throwing their hands up and resorting to using the absent devs as a punching bag while apologizing to Gaile for their tone and assuring her it’s not at her in particular.

But there’s a big problem with the suggestions, and it’s so simple it’s going to make me cringe when there is some movement on this issue. There’s so many suggestions beyond “just revert it” that I know there’s going to be tons of people still ticked off THEIR favorite suggestion wasn’t used, or if none of them are.

There’s a sort of sickened fascination going on in me waiting to see that day when there is a blog post about the attempt to try fixing this problem . . . and clocking the time until the massive fireball erupts from the forum server room.

It’s going to happen. I just wonder how big it’s going to be.

Of those two halves, many veterans will have finished the vast majority of the “hooray!” achievements and many of the more specific ones that make up the other half. That will generally leave only the specific ones that are definitely not completed by doing “essentially anything”.

Speaking for myself, I only gain AP from periodic achievements (dailies, festivals) and new content. And I tend to gain all AP from new content well before the next batch of new content. Gains from anything else are exceedingly rare for me.

This is why I hate AP and Achievements overall. If it were detached from a point value (Like Steam Achievements) and only gave titles or other things to show off? Sure, fine, could get behind it.

But I really don’t like Achievements overall, and only tolerate them because it’s a fun distraction some of the time and there are way too many players who had them shoved into their face with the X-Box 360 and now can’t conceive of games without them. I mean, seriously, when was it decided we not only needed Achievements for things . . . but every game had to have them in it and the “Press Start/Gimme” ones which fill up a significant portion.

. . . Dwayna help me I feel old . . .

Again, it’d be different for me if we had a list of Achievements which actually were interesting to achieve or required special efforts rather than “Beat Chapter 3 on Easy/Normal/Hard/Heroic”

Now to get laurels plus AP you have to log in and can do essentially anything in game. The options are greater now than before though the AP gain rate might be slower.

How do you imagine 2 year veterans would get AP from doing essentially anything in the game?

I still have quite a lot to actually do in my list. The Tequatl meta has some work left on it, the Triple Trouble I left mostly untouched, Dungeon completion, several WvW ones I could work on if I wanted to . . . then there’s the Dry Top and Silverwastes ones I haven’t bothered with, or the ones for replaying the Story Journal chapters.

Both of those 2 things are singular changes that have nothing to do with how you acquire traits in either the old or new trait system and in fact could both be had with the old system and function just as they do right now. So saying you don’t want to revert because of losing those 2 changes makes absolutely no sense. There is no reason we can’t get rid of the bad and still keep the good.

Yes there is, when people ask for a revert, they’re asking for . . . a reversion to the old system not “oh, keep these parts, and garbage the rest”.

There are three parts to this system which I actually like, and two big ones which make me cringe.

- I like the concept of working for some of the Masteries, to the point where they represent growth in character. A horizontal progression, if you would, rather than vertical. The fact you have to work for it assigns value to having them, as opposed to “I spend skill points/gold and have them”.

- I like the complete loss of needing to pay for Trait resets. This is the big reason I ran with less than useful Trait sets before the rework.

- I like the idea of having new masteries added. It allows for some growth in the system, so long as they’re balanced out properly.

- What I don’t like is how some of the Masteries are earned, such as how one in particular requires TAKING the Gates of Arah but DEFENDING doesn’t grant it. The secondary price is a bit steep if only because I think it should be Gold or Skill Points – play regularly enough now and you can get plenty of SP. Way faster and easier than Gold.

- What I don’t like is how there’s no ways of making it easier on alts to get through earning them. GW1 had the Skill Tomes which could help you out, which was why I threw support behind that idea in another suggestion topic merged into this one. Either that sort of way (requiring some work on it) or to allow them a reduced cost for ones already unlocked on another character.

Let me ask you a question: do you think it’s generally a good idea to alienate sizeable groups of players?

Changes will not always be welcomed by 100% of the population. This doesn’t mean that the changes are wrong.

I know I’ve accused you of not posting pertinent things a little earlier, but that takes the cake.

Balance changes alienate players who lost their builds. New recipes that increase prices alienate players. Those must be wrong.

You’re not getting anywhere with this line of forcing the point you want to make. You’re probably better off letting it alone, since now it’s looking painful.

In the end of the day, I don’t even care about Legendary anymore since it’s really not needed and the skin I’ve acquired from Hall of Monument for GS is, IMO, the real Legendary because no one else but those who has HoM can have it.

Honestly, it’s the only reason I have two swords on my warrior. Dual-wielding Fiery Dragon Swords and standing next to Rytlock was funny to just do and idle.

On the note of “why Legendary” I mostly decided way back I’d only pursue one if a Precursor fell into my lap. That was the least aggravating way for me to chase a Legendary at that time, since it was back when the Temple of Balthazar was rarely, if ever, completed.

Still saying the only legitimate problem is how people who want the AP have to do these Dailies. Everything else got moved off them, so then the only thing which HAS to be done is logging in for Laurels, Coins, et cetera. At least now it’s guaranteed to get a shot at a Gem Store item every so often instead of completely random . . . even if it is only Black Lion kits for me.

. . . also, going to say I find Achievements a rather dull addition to gaming in any game (not just GW2). Most times a waste of development time, and only some times a fun diversion.

That’s true, I forgot. I still have use for the other rewards though. The writs/tomes, the WvW exp, the extra PvP points. Enough that I’ve been doing more than the minimum 3.

I find the extra rewards which are from the gathering ones more useful. Low-level materials are always useful to me

I used to be able to make my own decisions how to fit the daily into my routine. Go to Silverwastes and get events, dodge, harvest for example while grinding for badges. Or maybe hit the champs in Frostgorge for events while getting rez and dodge in that map or perhaps I’ll wander by Orr today and get my dailies while I play there.

It’s kind of a subtle point maybe but instead of being told what I can do to get rewarded, I’m told what and where. Being able to play as you want where you want and get rewarded is better than being told where to play to get rewarded.

I get it, which is why I don’t really break my back if I don’t like the looks of the dailies. It’s only AP and I can earn it some other way – it eventually caps after all, so after it does . . . I don’t get anything from doing them.

So I don’t fret.

Well, for me it’s not the AP so much, though its nice. It’s the laurels which I badly need to finish gearing my chars. As soon as I get 5 together, they’re gone. With the new dailies I can use the tomes and writs on my key runner, saving me time and gold to level it. Or I can put them aside in case there is a new profession and I want to level fast. The gem store items are useful. I do like the rewards for PvP and WvW, though I find that area of the game not as fun.

All in all, the rewards for doing them are good. I just would prefer that the PvE dailies which are my “bread and butter” dailies for getting rewarded hadn’t been changed to a more restrictive and less fun version.

Well, the Laurels are no longer on the dailies . . . just the logins. And you can even log into a character and walk away before bed (as I did one time, by basically passing out at the desk) and still get it for that day.

Anyway, yeah, the Dailies no longer have Laurels. No need to worry about how bad they are

I don’t think the PvE dailies are getting people to do what I believe ANet wants people to do, use the daily as an incentive to go to maps you don’t usually go to and spend time there. When vista is up, instead of doing mapping and getting a vista, people go to the appropriate city and get it. If it’s harvesting, the lucky ones will get what they can from the home instance and get the final node in the nearest map. The rest make a quick run thru the map and leave. Events are racing from one to another to get credit, then leaving once the award dings. I can’t see how this is what ANet wanted. The new daily motivates people to treat it like a list to be checked off. Playing by someone else’s list is not fun. At least with the old system you could just play, for fun, and get some of them done if not all.

This isn’t that different from how people did the old system, aside from complaining about how it was forced due to needing to have them to get their Laurels and AP. Now the only legitimate complaint about having something held away and needing to do the dailies . . . is for AP.

Also of note, some people have posted in this thread or others about how they did treat the Daily list as a list of things to get done.. (Myself, I used/use it sometimes as a guideline for ‘what do I want to do today’) . . .

This leads me to the conclusion the Dailies never worked as people seem to think they were supposed to, short of one particular way – getting people to at least log in daily even if it’s to look at the list and nope away from them.

A blizzard hits Idaho and damages the potato crop. The decrease in the supply of potatoes causes potato prices to rise. As prices rise the demand for potatoes falls which leads to a decrease in the price of potatoes. The final price of potatoes may be either higher or lower than before.

True or False?

Since it’s a T/F is required then True. I doubt the price will remain the same. There are other factors which may affect price such as elasticity of that market and how quickly supply can be re-established at previous levels.

It’s actually false. It was a basic example regarding the difference between demand and quantity demanded. Elasticity was beyond the scope of the example but you’re correct that it could play a role.

It really looks like a trick question since it’s True if the price moves at all and False if it doesn’t move at all.

Given the price moves over time naturally without a blight . . . I’d have to say the question in the example is flawed and go speak the the professor after the test to ask if I read the question right or s/he messed up the wording.

It’s because there’s a difference between demand and quantity demanded. Quantity demanded refers to the position along the curve which corresponds with price. Demand is the curve itself.

Well . . . I didn’t study economics, I studied philosophy, writing, and math. Ask me to solve a quadratic, proofread an essay for grammar issues, or trace some logic constructions and I’m good.

Crafting precursors is such a bad idea. Legendary weaponss are already common. Without prea being craft able there’s nothing to get excited about in drops it will make a boring feature even more boring. Want a pen just buy it. I got sick of trying to get a pretty so I grinded for 4 days and bought spark

Crafting precursors which are account bound, I can get behind . . . mind you, this is in an extremely general term. The following options come to mind for how this could be taken, and my thoughts:

1 – “I just pop in easily farmed/bought materials and get it.” Not a fan of this idea, and if they went this route it’d probably be a hefty load of stuff just to try to keep it in some form of parity with what the market generally bears for the precursors now. I could get behind it, if only because I would then be dumping tons of stuff for profit as this path of getting a crafting would interest me less and I’d just keep waiting on the RNG.

2 – “I had to go farm special pieces to do this.” More in favor of earning pieces to put together, a la Mawdrey. Not so much in favor of the long-term requirement for the time-limited parts and the high RNG operation thus far. If the Precursor materials required drops from certain groups of events with limited RNG interaction (say, a trigger item in the inventory like the Mordrem Extractors to turn on and guarantee a piece drop)? Could get behind it. As long as it’s not 1% drops on everything.

3 – “Craft from Ascended Materials at 500”. Definitely could get behind this, and it’s not exclusive to the preceding. The trouble is, it only allows those who paid time and effort to get that high to get one this way and leaves out . . . well, most everyone else.

They have enough to keep many servers as “closed” to character creation to prevent overcrowding. I think the number 600-800 is lowballing it by quite a bit, though that’s more from what I would see on festival times.

This is one reason i wouldn’t even consider applying for a specialist position. First off, there is nothing official about them, they are literally being dangled out as a buffer and are completely troll/vitriol food. If it was clear that they wouldn’t be singled out, i might have applied. Second is, it’s really not clear what kind of time one would need to invest, would they generate a weekly, bi-weekly, monthly breakdown?

That first one is why I don’t consider even wanting to throw my hat into that. I have enough problems being grouped in as “sekret ANet employee”, I don’t need it to have even a little basis in fact. The second is why I seriously shook my head – I spend enough time here, and there are precious few lines of discussion I want to touch even with a ten foot pole, anymore.

Since this isn’t a paid position, nor does it carry any official weight, it really seems like a mostly useless program, from a players perspective. It also seems like it would be a lot of work, which most professionals would likely not have the time to volunteer.

So were volunteer customer service positions in other MMOs before this. Which would usually come with a recompense of some sort (usually waiving subscription fees for the period in which a player was active).

And, I’ll be honest with you, my experience doing that? Is why I have nothing but respect for the people who have to deal with us MMO players in customer service capacities. It’s why I’d send cupcakes weekly if I had the money.

It could be a good opportunity for some that have that kind of time, but for the most part, not being official, tagging them as specialist, seems like asking for trouble.

In said volunteer programs I was in there were two simple rules always followed. First, you couldn’t be on the same server as your player character. This was to prevent bumping into people you knew from your character time, and possibly might have a bias towards. Second, you would be issued an account and told to make a new name which was not readily identifiable as you to the outside world. Such as your personal character being named “Markie McScissors” and your volunteer character being named “Scott McScissors”.

Also . . . and this is important . . . everything could be logged due to being issued a company account. Everything.

…seriously? Looks perfectly sound to me:

beg the question
1(Of a fact or action) raise a point that has not been dealt with; invite an obvious question
(source: http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/beg)

beg the question
a) to make you want to ask a question that has not yet been answered
beg the question of
(source: http://www.ldoceonline.com/dictionary/beg)

You’re going to make me do this? Fine

Begging the question means “assuming the conclusion (of an argument)”, a type of circular reasoning. This is an informal fallacy where the conclusion that one is attempting to prove is included in the initial premise of an argument, often in an indirect way that conceals this fact.

The term “begging the question” originated in the 16th century as a mistranslation of Latin petitio principii “assuming the initial point”. In modern vernacular usage, “to beg the question” is sometimes also used to mean “to raise the question” (as in “This begs the question of whether…”) or “to dodge the question”.

You are using it incorrectly.

The sheer volume of the CDI threads makes them next to useless if data cannot be processed effectively to weed out what’s ‘constructive’ and what is not. But perhaps they served a whole different purpose to start with.

Which, mind you, was done in some of those towards the end, with Chris specifically saying “this is what I’m looking at as a summary”. Of course, if you want to present the opinion they had a whole different purpose than what is stated . . . then you raise the question: why would you believe anything said with a red name post, if you need to look for unspoken motives?

That is a question you should be addressing at those who use said argument as an attempt to discredit forum posts. My post is merely an observation of recurring actions showing that tendency.

That wasn’t a question. It was a statement, and an observation of my own.

Maybe I’m reading too much over the line.

I generally really like dungeon in this game. And many of my guild mates do too.

I generally like them too. But they’re not central to the personal story (outside of once) like they are on the other game, nor are they required for progression like they are over there.

And I can also enjoy them more with the GW2 method of handing out loot rather than Need/Greed/Pass.

This is all fine and dandy (after all, the devs don’t have time to dig through hundreds of pages to weed out ‘cosntructive posts’ from the rest), but the entire idea first begs the question,

You’re using that wrong. You want the phrase “raises the question”. No, I really did have to correct you on that – “begging the question” is an entirely different thing. No matter what it means colloquially.

or rather a clarification of a self-contradicting phenonenom commonly noted in controversial threads – are the forums representative (enough) of the playerbase to warrant all the effort put into this?

Given some of them put all the efforts into the CDI project, enough to try to give it its own subforum for visibility? I think the answer is evident by actions taken, let alone this program being kicked around.

After all, based on official statements over the span of time, it is but 1% of total playerbase that posts, and less than 10% that actually reads.

Importantly, it’s not as if 1-10% is an insignificant amount of players. Though that brings to mind the concern – if those are accurate assessments, doesn’t that tell us what the playerbase count is? Just reverse the math based on the “1% actually posts on the forums” and you get an idea of what the size of the player base is.

But that’s just as silly as the “vocal minority” issue anyway. Which is why I try not to use it as a part of my arguments – only “the ones here don’t speak for everyone” which is more accurate than pulling percents out of . . . we’ll be charitable and say “thin air”.

Sarcasm and mockery have little place in a forum, whether they are used to speak “the truth” or not.

Gaile . . . I disagree partially. Mockery in the sense of “look at the idiot with his idiot ideas” should probably not be something in a forum. Sarcasm which is used similarly? That’s less objectionable . . . but still something which should be avoided. The key points we need to keep (all of us, as players and red-tags) are:

- Respect
- Politeness
- Consideration

. . . to other people. There is a difference between “I think you’re stupid” and “I think your idea is stupid” . . . and “I don’t think that idea is going to work”. One addresses the derision and hurt to the person, the second to the idea, and the third replaces the derision with disagreement. One of these is definitely an example of what not to say, one is an example of what we should strive to say.

Sarcasm and mockery have their place in communicating between people, and looking at ideas. They can exist in polite conversation, between people who are willing to keep it away from personal targets.

Broad blanket disapproval is something I just can’t get behind. Of anything. As someone who works in communicating ideas and comments, and being a go-between for players and ArenaNet employees . . . I know why you say it that way. But I also hope you know why it’s not a position which should be held.

Communication needs to be open, and it needs to be honest. Even if (I’d say especially if said honesty leads to comments and opinions which aren’t “pleasant” . . . there is value still there.

Just my thoughts on this. (And why I was never allowed into debate club.)
