Hey, so this thread devolved quickly from loaded question to “White knight trap” where anyone who points out the loaded question is labeled and shoved into a bin.

I gave my answer earlier, but I think I’ll change it. I want nothing from this game, but I’ll accept whatever they give me. Or not. I still have a Minecraft account.

There are other items which are “Rare Salvage Items” but they’re dropped by Aetherblades / Molten Alliance / Watchworks. And a set of items Mawdrey can give up.

As for armor/weapons – they generally salvage into the type of metal used to make them for the level range they exist in.

— Concept Writeup —

What: New use for Renown Hearts on completion.
Why: To further reasons to return to older areas; to enable other ways of collecting/doing Daily Tasks.
When: Each Heart can be triggered once per day, but any number of Hearts can be done in one day.
How: Once the Heart is finished, a player may ask if anything more is needed to help. On doing this, a task from a random set is offered – the set includes the things needed to complete the Heart and at one of at most four other tasks relevant to the area. These tasks are used to fulfill the Daily Completionist, however the player may now hold any task for as long as they wish but only one task from each Heart can be held at any time.

Instead of forcing high level players into the starting zones why can’t we be given the option to run events in higher level areas. We could do champion slaying in Orr. Temple captures. Dragon events . Something that will allow high level characters to actually be tested and bot zerging around the low level areas where new players are getting shut out of the events.

I suggested that several pages back. Nobody noticed

Philosophy Shift to Less Choice

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Tobias Trueflight.8350

Tobias Trueflight.8350

But why did they have to make town clothes into a single piece? Fine, sell them as an outfit but allow them to be worn piece by piece (like armor from the store). Since they were designing a new wardrobe system anyway, they could have designed a system that offered the same choice (individual pieces of clothing “over” the armor) instead of less choice (which is the topic / issue).

I’m guessing because those were never ever meant to be armor and thus didn’t fit nicely into the armor system of Light/Medium/Heavy. Sure, it could possibly have been done, and I can think of at least three other ways but I don’t know what sort of constraints they were working under (time, or resources). Personally I would have just made a social set and an actual set, so you can wear whatever you like in the social set and that’s what everyone sees. Then have it not function that way in PvP/WvW.

And that’s how Terraria does it with their system.

The biggest problem with the Megaserver is loss of individual server identity. But then people go into WvW and suddenly they’re part of a server they didn’t know was still there (as far as the rest of the game is concerned). People in chat talk about servers in regards to WvW and people respond “there are no servers”.

Nope, no argument there. That’s completely the only problem I really see with how the servers were put together into the Megaserver system. Really needs a better way of integrating it to WvW, but since that would require potentially a problem of rewriting the way it works . . . we get to have this hybrid.

And before anyone says “lazy devs”, I can already tell you the headache it would be to try to dissolve that, refit it so there’s still three sides, and make it less likely you pick Red Team and your guildmates are on Blue Team . . . a worthy project? Sure. What don’t we get in exchange?

I completely disagree with you here. They clearly wanted to force people to earn traits in content to avoid paying the increased (and ridiculous) cost in gold AND SP. Yet another tool for forcing people to play content. They shouldn’t have very specific things to get a trait and the alternate cost is too high.

See, you’re not really completely in disagreement with me. I said the idea was good/interesting, but the execution is flawed. Really could have been done better, but it seems like they had an idea on paper and no time to really look at it closely.

If Anet is truly just trying to introduce players to content, create an incentive during leveling. Have players get mail or some other instruction that tells them if they try this content they will get a nice reward (once per account). There, now people will try the content if they want. There is some content that people won’t try no matter what you offer (sPvP) and there’s nothing any developer can or should do about that. Continually trying to railroad players into content is very frustrating, not fun.

I can tell you, right now, that would still get complaints posted here about how it was too invasive.

If you’re trying to say FF14 handles leveling the same as the NPE, no that is not “normal”.

No, I’m trying to say every MMO I’ve played has slowly and steadily introduced players to their skills until they have the full bit unlocked close to maximum level. EverQuest came to mind as well, because my ranger didn’t get some skills until the last 20% of the level range. One of these skills is darn near crucial for anyone in melee (Riposte).

FF14 has it worse than the NPE – the NPE doesn’t hold stuff hostage. FF14 held banking hostage, held equipment upgrades hostage, held the vaunted “you can change classes on the fly” hostage, and holds dungeon access hostage until you jump through an absurd amount of fetch quests for the storyline.

Earlier than EverQuest? Yeah, I didn’t have this sort of issue with things being slowly introduced and “you’re not trained enough to know how to kick at your foe (?!!) or block (?!!)”. . . yeah, game balance, sure, but . . . I need to level up to learn how to kick someone? Or to have the instinct to block incoming blows with a shield? But I’m all a-okay to forage for food and water from level 1, or track my enemies through the brush? But I’m not able to block.

Even the NPE isn’t that stupid.

I have played almost every AAA MMO out there and “normal” is the same as it has always been: continual and gradual progress with every level, not some strange “save it up and then rush forward all at once” system.

Most other recent MMOs also tend to have the bulk of your stats on your gear, and that being the real way you’re expected to progress. Again, pre-EverQuest was an exception. I almost miss those days until I remembered their love for non-consensual PvP.

First: so play a different way than you want, huh? That’s the answer? Figures.

Look, I’ve been playing a different way than I wanted since day one. I haven’t been killing every charr in sight, nor punting asura and trying for distance. Sometimes I mix it up and don’t do these things, because it’s much more satisfying to go weed-whacking through a Nightmare Court camp.

However, some people can’t even get to an event that pops up right in their map area before geared vets with speed get there first and kill everything. The problem is the events being limited to a single zone, not what weapons people are using.

No. The problem is how the events really don’t scale after a point and there’s a ton of people about to descend on an event and render it meaningless. This problem also existed when it was regions instead of zones . . . it was just much less notable.

Except we were talking originally about the mechanics that make the game unique, not the content. The feel of all of the cooperative PvE stuff in one game at one time…by design.

Nope, didn’t specify that

Still incredibly generic zone with incredibly generic events, and it only harms the game by existing. Would be much better off with a starter zone like the norn have.

. . . they get wolves.

No other game has put all this stuff in one box…with the idea of making PvE a completely cooperative experience. No other game has abandoned the standard quest hub architecture in favor of dynamic events. Rift went half way, but didn’t have the bottle to go all the way. As a result,. dynamic events in Rift were more of a side show than a main course.

Define “completely cooperative” since, well, there is still a somewhat uncooperative aspect to PvE here. It’s called the zerg vs late stragglers.

If you think you can take one single zone and build an argument about this game being generic around it, go ahead.

We can let readers make up their minds about that argument.

Challenge accepted.

Queensdale makes the game generic. It’s all about humanity and how they need to oppress everything they see, even each other, which is something we always see in games like this. Human empire-building at the cost of the nonhuman races. Everything is just so bland, happy, optimistic for humanity to get started reclaiming their land. Of course, they never do, they just repeat the same cycle over and over again getting kicked out of their farms, kicking out the centaurs, having the occasional Eldritch Abomination rise out of the swamp (how original is that anyway?) . . .

Seriously, pathetically generic area reminiscent of the Karana Plains of Norrath. Though at least there the centaurs weren’t rage beasts on hooves all the time . . . and the tengu didn’t care about anyone.

There is a lot of things that can make the definite majority happy, but

  • these things require more resources,
  • these things require compromising between business monopoly’s needs and client’s need.

Or C – the majority asking for it have no clue about what they’re asking for, and it would spell a mortal blow for the game. (i.e. “Trammel/Felucca split”)

Let’s take the wardrobe system:

  • Convert town clothes to dyeable outfits. Even that way, far more people would’ve been happy.
  • …or convert town clothes and costumes to mixable armor skins – requires quite a lot of resources, but everyone’s happy.
  • …or keep town clothes and costumes along with outfits and armour – requires some system tweaking.
  • Remove transmutation cost for sub-80 armour – compromise between money (feeding on clueless newbies and fashion rushers) and user-friendliness.
  • Introduce PvP tracks with transmutation charges straight away to please the PvP community.

A few of those are nice ideas. But Town Clothing was just . . . ill-conceived as it was put into the game, and should have existed differently in the first place. It’s one of three things I really think would be incredibly good to see cut off the game before any refinement to the core begins. The other two? Character-bound dyes and the Personality System.

And the “no cost transmutation for under 80”? Exploitable by using level 78/79 gear. You know what would be better? Exchange Karma/Laurels for Transmutation Charges . . . seriously, I’m not the only one swimming in pools of this disgusting purple stuff. Needs more love.

Let’s take dailies:

  • Add more generic but laaarge achievements for players playing PvE for a considerable time each day (view vista in map or kill 50 mobs anywhere; do 4 events in map, 10 events anywhere or do a dungeon; gather 4 plants in map, 10 anything anywhere or salvage 40 items) – compromise between goals and user-friendliness.
  • Fix event scaling – lots of resources.
  • Make PvP “Profession Wins” random per player.

The first one is going to annoy people of the type who have posted in this thread (and myself I will admit) because of limited play windows per day. Making larger amounts for an achievement puts stress on us to perform in the time limit if we want to do them. Making larger amounts and then sticking an “easy out” on it? Just means the majority are going to do the easy out rather than the other one. So why not just leave it as the “easy out”?

Fixing event scaling needs to be done anyway, but I highly doubt it can be done to the levels players are swarming to events. I was there for Lost Shores, when enough people congregate everything breaks down. But at a certain point the blame does have to stop being on ANet and more on players for basically perpetuating this behavior even knowing it’s going to cause issues. You know it’s badly balanced. You know it brings frustration to you and to others. You know you’re more than likely to have a bad experience. Why, exactly, is everyone still doing this?

(It’s already established why – it’s Easy Mode for those who manage to do it. Which is why it won’t stop, and ANet would be vilified if they tried to do something to actively combat it. Sort of like how comments would crop up during the Assault Knights about how crazy it was to limit to 50 players.)

As you can see, all this things can be done, and most players will be happy. Of course there always will be a very specific minority (hi, AP hunters and WvW solo roamers), and there always will be entitled kids, but there’s also the happy majority which will help you defend any friendly system.

I must disagree. I can see all things can be considered, and I can see it theoretically possible to make it so. I cannot see if they can be done in the way we want, and we probably won’t be told outright if it can be by a coder working with the game code. (For several legitimate reasons.)

I mean, heck, it’s easier to come up with a “better” Daily Achievement system which everyone seemed to like already. In fact it was done before . . . oh, right, people still complained about that one too.

STO has done most of this before GW2.

DE like encounters on the star map – check.
Whatever class combination can succeed together – check.
Downscaling – check.
Pressing one (left mouse button), no need for trinity – check.
Random exploring with random encounters without quest – check.
Anyone can rezz anyone at any time – check.
No need to group – check.

OK, downstate was not in STO. You got me.

FF14 also has a lot of things, too, off this list. Excepting “whatever class combo can succeed together” considering it forces dungeons into a certain mix, it’s not “Press X to Win” so much, and there’s no universal resurrection that I have found yet. (Though I think you can equip it cross-class? Maybe?)

Of course the downscaling is worse than it is here, being only for the DEs which don’t scale up/down to player numbers as well as they do here either.

Would you say that its worth for me to try and max a lvl 80 character before quitting to really give this game a chance?

I’d max a character, since you don’t unlock the highest level traits until you do. And there are fun things to do at max level.

Ahh but then there are fun things to do at not-max level. Naked sprints through Orr come to mind.

I suppose if I was to look hard enuf and took the time to do it I could. I can’t even remember who said what anymore. But if anyone can remember times and who said what they can always chime in.

It’s mostly moot anyway, and I don’t expect anyone to go hunting it all up. Why? It’s easier to make the claims and claim evidence is out there rather than presenting it. It’s also harder to have a means of proving it is solely this reason the decisions were made and not . . . well, multiple posts asking for the wardrobe or wallet systems? Or some guy making SAB as a lark for April Fool’s and not expecting it to be the smash hit it was?

I mean, I’m sure you could find someone with many followers saying Traits needed to be screwed so thoroughly people are wondering if the crime lab needs to show up with a kit . . . but I don’t think you’ll be finding someone before the release of SAB who demanded it be added. Ditto for several other things. It’s almost certain nobody wanted Scarlet Briar or was demanding for her to show up like she did.

And without even straining myself, I know in the CDI for Horizontal Progression ideas were passed around for the Wardrobe as a fun thing to do, I know several posts here were really asking for a place to store Dungeon Tokens early into the game, and absolutely everyone screamed never to do anything like Lost Shores the same way again.

Im no fan of the build system here, especially after playing gw1, because I like making my own builds, and I do find much more limiting here compared to gw1 in that regards. But I also recognize the difficulty in balancing and counterplay again after gw1

I rarely dipped into GW1’s PvP but even there there was . . . pretty often a limited number of builds you’d see with only minor variations and few surprises.

Perfect balance only exists in games where both sides generally possess the same rules, the same pieces, and the same options, and relies entirely on strategy to push through instead of chance. Chess is perfectly balanced. Risk is not.

Competitive games which thrive are not ones with perfect balance, so much as carefully tuned imperfect balance. Or deliberately having an imbalance imposed by the players/teams (see: professional sports).

They’d have to wait for someone to publicly post one which may not ever happen.

There are many websites that post all types of builds, also simply asking friends, guildies etc usually works for most people. Its not hard for anet to know what people are running. They nerf one, to bring up another, it gets abused, nerfed etc etc

Oooh, I love a good accusation. So, start citing, and provide links proving it.

+1
But no sense in even making a thread anyway cuz anet is notorious for only listening to players that have 10k followers on Twitch, reddit, twitter, etc. Unless everyone knows you then your opinion doesn’t matter.

I dunno, they listen to me . . . had some conversations with a couple of people wearing ANet tags who explained why a few times.

Also, I’d like to point out there’s “no winning” anyway here. If they listen to one group of players, another group of players is thus “ignored”, if they hear what players want and don’t agree with it, they’re also “not listening” or “destroying the game”.

So really this sort of complaint is obvious to those who can step back from the matter. There’s nothing ANet’s developers can do which isn’t going to earn them the “they don’t listen to players” type of scorn. My advice thus is completely ignore them anyway since you’ll be nailed to a cross over whatever you do.

You can call it what you like. It’s yet to take me more than 10 minutes to complete the daily and get 10 AP since the patch, a feat which took much longer previously. If all it takes is a quick visit to WvW to make that happen, why the heck not?

Some people don’t want to go to WvW. Given how the behavior is there sometimes, it’s understandable. (Some commanders do not like rogue agents doing stuff on a map which was not explicitly approved of.)

This made me laugh. I’d love to see a commander try to tell me that it’s his map and I can’t do something on it.

It’s not necessarily the commanders which are a problem, in those cases. No, the real problem are their followers who don’t like how someone is not throwing themselves at Hills but is capping camps/sentries or gone dolyak killing.

It’s also not common but it does happen.

I love to multi-box! I’ve multibox on many other MMORPG but with so many restrictions… and hey SURPRISE the post for multibox/macro is gone does that mean that a ban stick is coming??

Well in short.. my love for MMORPG is fading really fast.
Best of lucks Anet, its been fun!

How is it completely gone?

I don’t know, lately I have trouble finding how it existed in the first place

Philosophy Shift to Less Choice

The OP only cited Daily Achievements as one of several examples that ANet has been trending towards less choice.

Yeah, but some of those choices . . . were a lot like a blemish on the skin. It certainly doesn’t hurt, but getting rid of it might be preferable. The removal of Town Clothing was to remove a system which got only token amounts of support and was . . . just . . . look, it was barely more robust than the Personality system. Which has no effect anywhere except when you pick certain dialogue prompts.

Megaservers, as much as they are a problem and as much as they impacted how WvW is felt . . . was one thing I’m not going to say was a bad move entirely. It was perhaps the only logical move aside from doing server merges as other games eventually do – and is basically close to how Districts behaved in GW1. Now if only you could intentionally select a megaserver instance . . . we’d be right back at how GW1 behaved.

The revamp to Traits was an interesting idea, with some good points . . . and a lot of uncomfortable ones which results in a system a lot of people have expressed anything from disappointment to murderous rage over. I think it could have been done better, and that is all I care to say now.

NPE was a change which I don’t know if anyone was asking for (and can’t see why they would think to have the requested final product of it). It’s not terrible, but it is just . . . odd. Having played FF14 for three months, I don’t think there’s much difference in how a normal MMO handles it, and how NPE handles it anymore. Whether this is good or bad depends on your perspective – I feel it might have been done because players of those typical MMOs might just not be comfortable otherwise. Sort of like moving out of a place where the neighborhood association had lots of strict rules about the property and into a place where “no cops, no problem” seems to be the mantra.

I believe you that there was a blog post, but do you really think the openworld PvE dailies are enticing players to do things they haven’t done?

Even the defenders of the system do not seem to truly believe it, as they apparently think that the default behaviour should be to do them in the least time possible, using all loopholes and shortcuts you can find. And laugh at posters that actually went at the dailies the normal way.

I believe the default behavior is, indeed, “get this done as quickly as possible” because that seems to be a focus of the majority of the people on the forums. Therefore, it’s entirely logical the majority of the players agree with the concept of them doing everything quickly and with the least effort.

Given this is also related to the arguments for how change needs to be done because the forums exploded on a topic, I dare someone to try to dismiss that as “vocal minority” . . . who isn’t Vayne . . . and not come off as hypocritical.

Regardless, I will continue to do them quickly because they’re easily done quickly and with a minor amount of fuss most times. (And when they’re not, I’ll turn the page to the WvW ones and see if there’s one there which will be simple.) I’ll also continue to offer up advice on how easily to do some of the tasks for those who want to complain about them being hard or time-consuming.

. . . no, I have no way around World Bosses, or dual-Fractals.

Exotic Crafter? I just made a Dragonite Ingot and it triggered for me. WAY too much Ore out of the gifts Also upgrading Luck works too, and doesn’t require working up skills.

Learning this kind of stuff is what the forums are for . . . ask other players for advice, and hopefully get it.

Why not…

  • Complete five events
  • Gather a certain amount
  • Complete an explorable/story path in a dungeon
  • Complete a full fractal run
  • Daily activity participation
  • Defeat a world/temple boss
  • Defeat 50 enemies
  • Complete three jumping puzzles
  • Complete a personal story instance

Oh, those were the old dailies…

Yes, but . . . a lot of them were just . . . gah. Also, there were lots others which would cycle in, so it wasn’t exactly a static list. There was a small list of “hand-holding” ones which just were bizarre and easy 1AP. (“Daily Laurel Vendor”?)

Still think the idea I put forth before could work better than this, even if it would draw all sorts of complaints.

Why the constraints? Why not let the people decide for themselves where they like to play?

Because a good number of people don’t decide for themselves, they just follow whatever is easiest and rush through it. This is why zergs exist and bust the scaling mechanics everywhere they go – it’s the path of absolute least resistance.

Probably just my usual tendency towards bad luck with any random generation in a game. Popping into the mega-instance where the nodes aren’t where I usually find them.

Thanks to all who replied.

There are a few places you can look in a zone which seem to have nodes gravitate to them. That’s been my experience anyway. And so let me share!

Ascalon: There’s always ore nodes near the Iron Marches exit in the Blazeridge Steppes – and Saplings too. I usually hit it up when I do Shatterer.

Kryta: You can always find a rich node in Icegate Gorge, and often enough extra nodes to walk away well-loaded. Saplings are common in the south/southwest/west edges of Gendarran as well.

Maguuma: I haven’t yet charted a solid arrangement but there’s often a lot of Saplings around the Golem Mk II platform. A little further east from that, you should be able to find Platinum; a little west into the water there’s sometimes a rich node – often enough to make a quick look worth it.

Shiverpeaks: Frostgorge Sound in the north is rich enough and has the Tier Six nodes scattered through it where you can hit most in ten minutes, twenty if it happens to be down in the Lattice.

Orr: We all know by now where there’s a nice grove of Elder Wood in Malchor’s Leap. There’s also often a concentration of ore nodes near the Temple of Lyssa. Cursed Shore requires much more work to cover the usual ore/sapling concentrations.

It was mildly annoying. the prize is mostly worth it for me, but really wish there were other ways of acquiring the toy minis next year than the one-shot Meta.

You can get the toy minis from the final reward in the PvP reward track, as well.

Hmm.

More speaking of how in the first year there was the events which rotated through the towns before settling on Lion’s Arch, where you would win Stuffing, Cogs, and Glue to make the miniatures. I don’t quite know why this was abandoned.

If it’s mining and you have nodes in your home instance, they count if you go to the one in that region. I usually get 90% from my 3 nodes. After that you only need to find one more. (If you don’t have any you can also ask a friend or maybe ask in map chat if they will let you mine theirs).

I got a Basic Ore Package some time back for the Gold node (with free Achievement Reward gems so nyeh) . . . so that, plus the candy corn, quartz, and sprocket nodes makes me a happy ranger.

I just got my last Tixx mini the other night, yay. In the meanwhile:

The meta this time around was definitely more strained with the removal of Winterday Daily counting towards it. I found them tedious but only from the angle of “I don’t have much time to play and now I have to hope Bells don’t bug on me” or “Can the gift dolyak drop more than one present this time, or will I need to fund another one?”.

It was mildly annoying. the prize is mostly worth it for me, but really wish there were other ways of acquiring the toy minis next year than the one-shot Meta. Or new minis which are available to ones who have all five of the toys.

I like it getting moved to Divinity’s Reach, but . . .

Can we please fix up Lion’s Arch now? It’s been how long since funding was getting collected and I’m starting to worry Evon ran off with it.

You don’t lose out by ignoring it. It’s purely additive, it gives something more than the activity it encourages you to do already gives on its own.

They subtracted old dailies to create this new system. If old dailies were part of how you played — that is gone. The way old dailies integrated into casual pve is gone.

I’m not complaining about how new dailies are implemented. I’m complaining about what got paved over to produce them. To me, this is just like Traits all over..

Exactly.

Not exactly.

Traits are far more screwed than this.

Am I the only player who wasn’t too hung up on the daily rewards? I just liked having the dailies as a framework for a night’s play. It made the game less repetitive to have random background tasks I’d complete while going about my normal business. They were a key part to how I was playing the game.

Well, I wasn’t hung up on the rewards either, but that’s because I no longer really could perceive anything worthwhile in them. I did use them as a framework because “what the skritt, why not?” was as valid as “let’s go harvest me a stack of Elder Wood today”.

. . . mostly because I still needed it for my craft practice.

Increasing restrictiveness is not a part of “play as you like”.

Neither is what a lot of people seem to think the term encapsulates, along with the grind comment from the videos before release . . .

I mean, it’s already a pile of dolyak droppings since a lot of people (disruptive sorts) can’t “play as they like” by deliberately disrupting the game, or scream RL racial slurs all over map chat. And I, personally, can’t run around beheading charr and punting asura out of the zone just for being in my way on a jumping puzzle or for existing . . .

“Play as you like” never existed in the first place if we’re going to be completely serious about interpreting it.

This is just silly – we’re talking about having choices in how we play the game. Not being coerced into playing PvP, WvW, Fractals, Dungeons, Jumping Puzzles, or anything else that Anet is trying to force us to play. Please re-read.

Did I say anything about that in my post? Please re-read.

and 2 fractals was just stupid

Yeah, I’m not going to defend that random selection. REALLY need to refine how it selects those . . . maybe lists it picks from where Fractals/Dungeons are on one list picked once only from?

Sort of like:

List A – Gathering, Vistas, Leveler
List B – Dungeons, Fractals
List C – World Boss, Group Event, Zone/Region Events
List D – Reviver, Dodger, Reviver, Condition Applier/Remover, Crafter

Not all-encompassing but you get the drift.

Re: The zergs ruining things . . .

That’s a player mentality issue, something which has developed in this game to just “easy mode” everything by massing people and steamrolling everything. Probably because the game has no means of punishing it, since it was designed with inclusion in mind – anyone can jump into events because they want people to feel like they’re not getting turned away by the game.

(At least in most cases.)

I don’t think there’s a way to really stop zergs from forming, without seriously harming the game. Or angering most of the players who want that sort of easy mode to just do and be done with things.

How is it a bad thing that there’s so few choices? If you increase them, the part where it tries to encourage you to branch out would be gone, and how would that be better?

It’s not bad in and of itself, it’s bad when people don’t want to take the other choices. Like at your average pot luck dinner where you see someone has brought that dreadful green bean casserole which is never . . . ever . . . something you can stomach, tuna casserole when you have a bad history with seafood, and just enough chicken pot pie for you to get a spoon of but not enough to really make a meal out of.

Of course, the solution is to wait until it’s over and then break out the ramen . . .

Heavy as in weight or heavy as in looking like chainmail/plate . . . ?

Because so far, perhaps the early studded leather looks light as far as weight wise, but less like Heavy? Heritage perhaps.
