I’d like to humbly suggest that the Golem Chess game from Metrica Province either be restored or moved to Rata Sum. I was so impressed with the level of detail in Tyria right from the beginning on seeing those.

Actually adding them to Rata Sum is a great idea even if they are restored to Metrica Province.

And I’d totally buy one for my personal instance in the gem store. Just sayin’.

I’d say this is indeed something which is worth adding back somewhere in the game. Also, I’d say it’s worthwhile to add Polymock once again.

Honestly, everything in life can be measured in opportunity costs. How you make any decision is based on whether one option is better than another. Whether you play a game 8 hours or go to work 8 hours, one is more fun, while the other is a fixed dollar amount. By going to work you are deciding that the pay you receive is worth as much, or more than your game time.

Technically, you’re right. However . . . these decisions are often not simply based on opportunity costs any more than game design decisions are based simply on monetization concerns.

You go to work rather than play games not because you decided it’s worth more of your time . . . but because you need the pay to afford your rent, or your bills. You choose to bend over and pick up the penny because you find it interesting, or you don’t because it’s incredibly inefficient use of your time, monetarily speaking . . .

What seems like simple decisions are often complex when you look at them and break down the influences which go into the decision.

I’m sorry if this stuff sounds like ‘conspiracy theories’ but decisions like this are made every day in every game in the world that has a pay store that is supposed to be the long term profit generator for that game. Heck, decisions like this are made every day at your local Walmart and corner convenience store. Hopefully, people understand this and argue for the things that will keep the games store on an even keel. When asking about features you want, also think ahead as to how it would help retention and how it could be monetized well within the current system, and fight hard to prevent poor monetization choices. Those are the keys to discussions, those are the real things to fight for to keep the game healthy.

Decisions like this are, indeed, very important to the people high up in companies who want to make money rather than lose it. I won’t deny it, because I have actually seen such analyses laid out in simplified terms before me. However, there is often a point where a company needs to make a decision not because it will net them the most profit, but because it is the right thing to do, or it suits the vision of the leaders more than chasing sheer profit.

And I can cite one example, though it’s incredibly off topic, of a company which is rather large in one chosen market and made a decision which seemed rooted in morality rather than profit. Should I?

The traits are a different issue, dealing with opportunity costs. By changing the way the players obtain their traits, hunting for all of them, the opportunity costs are tipping towards cash purchase rather than in game play. This is a major departure from one of the base goals of this game, i.e. no one should have to do unnecessary grind to access content.

With all due respect, I think you’re engaging in a psychologist’s fallacy here (if mental state X would lead to action Y, then any observation of action Y proves the actor is in mental state X even if there are other mental states that would also lead to action Y).

The trait system could just as easily been seen as an attempt to implement player demands that ended up not working out well. Namely, since launch there was a big block of players expressing nostalgia for the “skill capture” system in GW1. The new trait system essentially is that system.

I also note it’s kind of weird to describe being expected to play the game as an opportunity cost in terms of game design.

I sort of agree, and always have since seeing the Trait Mastery system revamps. It does feel like a shot and a grazing hit rather than hitting the target.

But then, I am one of the unwashed masses who never finished college and works a wage-slave position.

I’d like to reiterate for the thousandth time that this is not the way to go about giving feedback. Telling someone how to do their job is so condescending.

I don’t think his tone came off as condescending. I think it hit a balance of respectful, criticizing, and professional.

The only thing missing is a proposed solution. And, let’s be honest with ourselves, I find it hard to believe any one person could come up with a solution to a player retention issue. It’s just . . . too complex.

I am really curious about the focus group they tested on too. We know nothing about them or who they are. I haven’t heard from anyoen who was in the focus group or what exactly they did.

Did the focus group actually test these changes out? Or was the focus group polled and Anet assumed this is the content they would enjoy based on polls?

A proof that such a focus group actually existed would be nice.

How will we be sure, if proof is delivered, you won’t then claim it is fabricated?

All joking aside.. we are going to need those Asuran launchers.

Am I right….Am I Right!!!!

Chris

P.S: The idea of firing them into walls is also cool! I jest…..

But the life of a single Asura is such a small price to pay to be able to get down that darn wall!

I mean, y’know, they can respawn after…

The Asura missing-neck bug, when it looks like the head would be directly tied to the body, should be a feature for respawning asura who were fired against a wall.

…..(-: i have clearly derailed the thread and all your comments are awesome (seriously we should do this) but for now lets stay on target. I feel like i have been the disruptive child in the classroom.

I have nothing more to add here, other than this is entirely your fault but at least you admitted it.

I have an idea or two to try to mitigate this sort of thing -

Step 1: Tag each siege dropped with who dropped it so anyone can see who deployed that build site or siege.

Step 2: Allow context right-click menu on siege “Report > Siege Trolling”.

Step 3: ??

By giving someone something, getting them accustomed to it, then removing it, and offering that item for sale is done daily by drug dealers. I find it interesting that this might be a plan for the future, but it’s also distressing. This means that more things that we enjoy can be removed, changed, stretched out to change the opportunity costs involved to tip more players into the gem store with real money than in game currency.

. . . I’m not seeing it happening so much for funneling you to the Cash-to-Gem-to-Gold triangle. I might be able to admit to seeing it done to try to get you playing further abroad and to “persuade” you to stretch wings out and go to places normally not even looked twice at.

And this is specifically talking about Trait Masteries. The NPE seems mostly fine, I’m not finding too much hard-locked which I really should be able to access. And the Elite skill return to 31 now makes it easier to look and go “not too much changed, despite a lot of it changing”.

I just don’t know . . . I’m not a mind reader, at least not at this distance and over the Internet. That requires Patrick Jane.

The he I was referring to is Chris Whiteside.

Yes, but you’re forgetting something. The assumption there is a conspiracy comes along with the need for those involved in keeping it to lie or spread disinformation to maintain that conspiracy. In other words, any denial is only supporting evidence there is a conspiracy, by the logic of the conspiracy existing in the first place.

This is just too bizarre to contemplate in a legal state of mind.

No, it’s working backwards through the logic of how a conspiracy needs to operate. It’s also why most conspiracy theories start to unravel when you look too closely – there’s too many people who would have to be involved and not one who would crack and unmask it with solid and supportive proof rather than innuendo and “take my word for it”.

Not saying it’s impossible, merely . . . implausible.

Sadly, Roybe, I’m an engineer by education, a customer service rep by employment, and a writer by hobby, not someone who does much with psychology or economics. So I do have a different . . . limited . . . perspective on the details.

The way I see it about the Commander tags is how they anticipated people getting them in the first place – either through working the gold or getting donations from people who really and truly wanted them to get it. If a good commander said “Hey guys, if you want to donate whatever you can spare I’ll start saving it up for a new color tag so I can differentiate myself better” . . . I think they’d get roughly half the value in donations. But then, I also watch good commanders get siege donated to them so . . . I expect the price was to discourage the same sort of thing we saw increasingly: vanity Commander tags. “I have it because I have money, and don’t really use it”.

I think the Trait Mastery (that is what they are, I had to stop and check) overhaul was not malicious or even greed in primary intent. I think they left the “buy it” option for people who didn’t want to spend time going out to do the tasks in question (especially since I recall that was something also asked for – an “opt out” of sorts from needing to go chase them down – another thing which GW1 had in their cash store from what I recall).

I think with the Trait Mastery . . . they didn’t do enough thought and polish on what events should be chosen. Which is how we get “Gates of Arah” and “Overgrown Grub” in the mix of things to do.

I do not think it was a nefarious and intentional psychological ploy on the part of the developers who made the system. (However, higher than that, I can’t begin to guess.) I think it is something which wasn’t thought out well enough, which is . . . as I say repeatedly and unfortunately . . . rather par for the course with the developers.

Good ideas, interesting vision . . . questionable implementation.

Please keep in mind that this game does have more to offer than just small group combat in PvP. In WvW pets really do have very legitimate issues due to all the AE that’s spammed without cause or concern. I would actually consider them useless there. Especially in GvGs or guild zerg groups.

They really are kind of squishy in WvW when in zerg situations. But then again, a lot of things turn surprisingly squishy when zergs are involved. Pets, thieves . . . gates . . . walls . . .

Sure, they sold airship passes. And I had fourteen drop while I was doing the events. So . . .? I suppose they opened the Crown Pavilion in order to sell Royal Terrace passes too . . .

Also, the major services aren’t spread out further than they used to be, from what I looked at. The crafting area is actually laid out a little better, with the Mystic Forge and Black Lion merchants/bankers being closer.

The contested waypoint is, to note, destroyed. I suspect that’s part of the LW work, and will be replaced by whatever new tech Taimi developed to make Waypoints less appealing to Elder Dragons.

Bundles

Would it be possible to make it so that some bundles, but not all, would get dropped automatically when you enter combat? I think this might be useful for low level bundles in areas (like Diel’s Farm) where combat is uncommon. In this way, if you are feeding cows and the bandits attack and start hitting you, you would automatically drop the cow food, allowing you to fight back.

I believe that some players may have been confused by this, and the change would make sense for non-combat bundles in low level areas. It would also help if a large tutorial popped up for every low level bundle that points at the “weapon swap arrow” and lets you know to press it or the “~” key in order to drop the bundle and return to your normal toolbar. It would also be a decent idea to replace all “empty” slots in a bundle with the “drop bundle” options, so if a bundle only has 1-2 moves of its own, then slots 3-5 would be to drop it.

With those changes, I can’t imagine anyone reasonably complaining about bundles.

Pretty good analysis on this.

Also, can I get my help archive back?

I’d like to see them revert the Traits System back for pre-April Feature Patch and to give us actual Signets of Capture for Elite Skills. The signets could cost 10/30 Skillpoints depending on which Elite you want to capture. The cost would be determined by the current Skill Point cost of the Elite now. Have these Elites on certain bosses in Dungeons or even Event Bosses in the open-world. Also make sure the Elite is a skill that said boss would use just like in GW.

The thing about range is though, it’s almost impossible to tell how far you’re shooting in this game. There’s no accurate measuring system available. Seeing as the longbow’s range wasn’t touched with this update just goes to show that before everyone started hyper analyzing Rapid Fire for every little advantage it had so they could complain about it NO ONE was aware of it’s full range, as it didn’t matter.

I had an inkling of a few ways I could try to tell but they’re not TOO accurate, like if it’s an extra 100-300 range I might not be able to tell 100%.

If there’s no way of telling exact, then I can’t be sure this is something which players can perceive or even test reliably.

Long Range Shot is clearly well beyond the “claimed” 1500-1800 depending on traits.
Now that it’s been decided that Ranger should be a dominant class…How about we get some truthful numbers as to the range on some of the skills?
People will come here & troll & profess “Sure it’s a little further if the ranger has a height advantage” It’s simply not true.
Test it out. Stand on even ground & watch how much further it reaches than the numbers quoted in game & on the wiki.
Stop deceiving everyone …post the numbers…so players can make informed decisions about builds…based on legitimacy…rather than numbers that are obviously skewed.
It’s not fair to the constituency. It’s as simple as that.
The fact the erroneous numbers have been allowed to remain this long…doesn’t say much for your ethics.

Okay, I’ll give this a try.

Would you consider making traits account unlocks instead of individual unlocks? This will lead new players to content through requiring them to do it, but keep it from annoying the kitten out of people creating alts. It makes sense with how the NPE is now, and would be amazing.

I could get behind this. Or make it like with Elite Tomes from GW1 – you can buy them with Skill Points and use them to select a locked Trait Mastery to learn which is unlocked on another character.

I think this concept could be interesting, offering a different method that is more generic to get skills once you have unlocked them.
perhaps they could be bought with karma/be given from doing any trait unlocking activity in that teir. In this way people could choose the traits they want after the first time.

Sounding good so far . . . of course that doesn’t solve one issue I think was attempted to be solved by where the traits were located. Specifically, getting people to spread out to events or regions which were being ignored.

The solution I’d pick for that is simple – unique weapon drops with more than 0.1% chance of being dropped.

I could get behind this. Or make it like with Elite Tomes from GW1 – you can buy them with Skill Points and use them to select a locked Trait Mastery to learn which is unlocked on another character.

ArenaNet . . . if you could find a way to reunite the crew of the Bebop as potential voices for us to use and be heard by others to use, I would pay you almost any price so my ranger could sound like Spike Spiegel again.

If you play it before reacting, you’ll find it isnt the end of the world and actually includes some good redesign choices.

It rarely is the end of the world, but it seems to be the end of the game for some people who don’t like it.

I’m on the fence about the redesign choices, some are okay, some don’t seem to make much of a difference overall . . . and at least one has me scratching my head and going “what?”. (Underwater weapons.)

I agree with you about this. I think it’s premature to gauge how NPE will play at the current time, because we do know changes are coming.

And yes, you do see some forum members making the same points again and again. That truly is not helpful to the review and discussion, in that the devs would prefer a focused, clear, concise statement rather than realizing “Wait, it’s that same person, saying the same thing for the 19th times.”

Apologies but I will continue to say the same thing:

Your devs and testers really do need to strive for a couple more polish passes before things like this go live. I know it might not be possible, but it’s a recurring apparent thing when I look at the patches thus far.

. . . also, what you aim to do with these things and the actual effect seems to never quite meet up. But that’s normal

I personally like what they did with the feature pack and if you don’t then i just recommend not to make a new character.

I actually recommend making one to try it out and then offer feedback as to what you didn’t like, so they have a chance at actually learning what they did wrong.

I’m still looking forward to the patch that makes the entire NPE optional for veteran players.

yea someone made a very good solution, NPE for the account’s first character only

That’s been suggested dozens of times by now.

I hope they heard it.

crafting is using gold, by other means, anything you use to craft could be sold, and in general many things actually cost more money to craft than to buy.

Not if the items are dropped rather than bought. But then you get into “opportunity costs” and the like for arguments and I’m not sure it’s worth the math to figure out you can make a few extra silvers selling materials then buying the gear versus just making it.

make no mistake, i actually enjoy crafting, and thats how i geared my initial charachter, however at that time, the TP was not functioning that well, and materials were generally a lot closer to being break even.

Most of them are still rather easy to get your hands on. I just carry a salvage kit with me, or two, and salvage Fine items. Usually get all the basic materials I need. The Fine materials, on the other hand . . . mmm, map completion and DEs gave me a fair amount of backstock but that does run out fast when you have more than one alt gearing up.

But unfortunately, its kind of a bad way to gear a charachter now, effeciency wise.

i remember many times wondering if i could help my friends with crafted gear, but after doing the calculations, the answer was often, ahh probably better just to buy it on the TP, and sell your materials.

See, that’s a difference in attitude we have. I can’t be bothered to do that math and jump through the hoops for a few extra silver when I can do it, and go do WvW or kill things in Orr to make up the loss. I find it more . . . enriching . . . to just help and recoup financial losses later.

this is true bad implementation could be part of it but I’m more interested in seeing what they are willing to do now, without dwelling too much on why it was done.

Well, I think they’re willing to meet halfway, as in: some things they’ll go back on, other things they’re going to stick to their guns. They’re never going to completely cave, since they believe they had a necessary change to make. So long as they think it was needed, I doubt we’ll see a total reversion.

If we do, I will eat my moa.

as for more cash shop stuff, I think that is purely subjective but more skins never hurt I like Decking out and critiquing my characters look. content for the game is a different subject but they both bring income.

I didn’t say more skins isn’t wanted . . . I mean more through the cash shop. I think we’re hitting a dangerous point of saturation on how much people really wish to be spending just on cosmetics, and how much of that is only from the store as opposed to the game.

hmm.
There is a noticeable increase in damage if you are always wearing the top of the line gear, but that is fairly expensive. However i doubt they could/would give you like 8-9 peices of gear every time you level.

You can craft alongside your leveling fairly easily – this is what I did the first time through and have done for my alts. It’s not easy, and if you have a lot of alts you might need to spend time getting resources but . . . it works better than RNG.

Those solutions would be really large scale changes though, effecting almost everything, so i doubt they would do it.

I think creeping forward on the damage value is something which is worth being wary of. It can easily just go awry.

In the current design, you are basically expected to use gold to power up your armor as you level, occaisionally finding something useful

Or you can just craft, or befriend a crafter. Heck, if you had the materials I’d even do it for people. Wouldn’t even charge, if I had the craft discipline up high enough.

Given how much I admire him, I’m gonna take the compliment of comparison.

elaborate here on what wasnt fun.

I’m not judging you, im just interested in what you felt made that system, or even this system not engaging or fun.

i do agree that overall the process could be more entertaining, in and of itself, but im curious what would do it for you.

Thanks for asking a good question.

pre-trait gating leveling system was great … why come up with so much kitten to fix something that issn’t broken?

Because it was broken? Or at least, it wasn’t anywhere near engaging or interesting, or fun.

Now if they could get the last one of those to actually be something they hit even 75% of the time . . .
