Maybe they’ll add them later. Have to have something to add. lol

. . . just make another trash collecting one for the stuff NOT covered already which is trash. Or like the “Fine Dining” one, for a different theme of foods?

Heck, they could get away with adding an item at specific Karma Vendors without announcing it, and a collection which unlocked when you first get one. Then you have to figure out where the others are.

Seriously, done creatively I think Collections are a fascinating potential piece of content.

If you say so. Only you can judge of the long term goals suck for you. I think the collection stuff is fine. But then, I’m not in a rush to get it, hence the concept of a long term goal.

I don’t expect to ever get a couple of these. Like, the Black Lion collections.

I don’t expect to get all of them either. One the one hand, that’s good because there’s always one other thing to do. On the other hands it’s bad, particularly in the case of the black lion collections, which are ridiculously expensive and no good in game way of getting them. That feels to me to be greedy.

I’d agree, except it seems like a “well why not?” throw-in. Especially giving you back tickets (any tickets at all) for finishing it. What’s more puzzling is the lack of a Fractal Weapon one . . . and Mystic Weapon one.

I don’t know, maybe they were meant to be long term goals and the purpose of them isn’t just to buy everything off the trading post. That would be my guess.

If so, the long term goals in this game suck plain and simple (imo <4mods>)

Well, no lie . . . they’re not as terrible as the long term goal of earning “Unlucky” to maximum rank, don’t you think?

he said tutorials are too hard for new players, and bore veterans.

That also isn’t what he said. He said “good tutorials are hard to implement”. To be fair, Daniel Floyd showed it’s easy to not do a good one .

From the video: “This is hard to execute on…”

It really isn’t as easy as it sounds. See his “Rule #5” for why . . . and why ANet did this system rather than keep the other.

and yet the system they instituted bores/annoys veterans greatly, and i dont really buy that it teaches people the basics any better.

Yeah, on that I’ll agree a bit.

What would you say is the drop rate of the Tequatl spoon? Word seems to be that it’s fairly common, but not a guaranteed drop.

That seems to be the case – I got it in all three Tequatl kills and more than a few others on map chat said they had duplicates enough already.

There is no need to go to the Sector Zuhl. The Embers at Sunken Halls of Clarent will also drop these. They are just across the bridge from Bloodfin Lake Waypoint in Iron Marches.

Thank you! I was hoping they dropped someplace else…the wiki needs really be updated

Not many people were bothering to update trash drops . . . I hope more people add details soon.

They are mostly predictable based on their fine crafting materials drops. The tricky ones are needles/barbs/spikes and the patch of fur.

Icebrood, devourers, both types of mobs tend to drop the Needles line of trash. Also, NPC defenders/guards in WvW will drop them too. Weird.

Grawl drop fur, not . . . as I thought . . . animals. ANIMALS drop claws or fangs, sometimes both.

There have been “I am confused” posts, but these are more aimed at the quirks of GW2 – dodging / combo fields / downed state / etc.
These could have been addressed by having a reasonable tutorial section of gameplay (which could be skipped by those who don’t need it), rather than a wholesale re-working of the early stages of the game.

You may not have seen this, but a dev answered my question on this, basically saying the reason they’re not making an in-depth tutorial is because “It’s too hard”

I know this sounds like a no-brainer, but:
Don’t you think a well developed, clear and concise tutorial would have at least curbed some of the issues you have with new players “understanding” the game, instead of changing the core game pacing?

Actually not. Generally speaking tutorials are hard to implement, boring for experienced players and overwhelming for new players. The best tutorial is a system that slowly puts the content out to players because it gives experienced players something to achieve while reducing complexity and option shock for new players.

That’s . . . that’s not what he said . . .

But the question becomes, is the PTR and the potential to catch issues worth the investment of time, money, and hardware?

Only if you actually act upon the data gathered.

And next question in line:

If we assume ANet isn’t listening now, then what makes people think they’ll listen to a PTR?

Of course not. The dwarves managed to do something close to it a while ago And I suspect the charr and norn are capable.

And I suspect humanity will have to realize the Six Gods probably aren’t going to blatantly resurface as great and powerful magical beings while there are Elder Dragons who eat magic running around.

PTRs do catch more bugs but at a very high cost.

The cost of setting up and running the server, another server to monitor and fix, spoilers for people who don’t want them in map chat, people who use the server to profit financially, and thinning out of the people who play the actual game (assuming many use the test server. I didn’t find that to be the case in Rift, because I used the test server there).

But the question becomes, is the PTR and the potential to catch issues worth the investment of time, money, and hardware?

Again, I’m not so sure it really would get used well enough to give good data. But then, this community has surprised me a lot so . . .

because retaining new users at early levels wasn’t just a china problem we needed to solve, it’s a problem in the west too.

Then make the game more interesting, not more boring. You removed every unique heartquest in the beginner zones (golem chess, turning into a fernhound, dodging killer-rabbits) and turned them into generic “go there, click that” quests.

I found the Raven Shrine heart still existed, that one was one of my favorites since BWE2. Also seems the Snow Leopard Shrine one still has a form change on it which also was fun.

Hated golem chess – too easy to win at it. And the rabbit one made me really want to start a market for rabbits’ feet to Orr farmers for magic find boosts.

PTR. Yes, solves all problems. No game with PTR has ever been unsuccessful.

Ultima Online comes to mind for specifically having a test server which devolved into faction zone control eventually and not so much testing going on My brother played on it quite a bit, he enjoyed the PvP. The game took a wrong turn when they split the world into PvP and non-PvP worlds, and I heard there was a huge crash when the Oriental-themed expansion hit.

EverQuest had a test server and was known for having several “working as intended” issues from vanilla release which didn’t get fixed until much later . . . while blatantly being finished later than vanilla. (“Fiery Avenger quest was always in the game” for instance.)

Given my sour taste over EverQuest, I gave up on MMOs until Guild Wars 1 (not an MMO, yes, I know). So anything between “Shadows of Luclin” for EverQuest and now I can’t attest to test servers . . . but I can attest to almost every patch day having things bah-roken when it hit live. Right up to and including “can’t access expansion material even though I’m flagged for buying it”.

But I did get a nice chuckle from some dev friends of mine who told me it might catch a few more bugs. But not many more.

We’ve been saying for years now that they need a PTR for some things and what they’ve done to progression prior to max level is a perfect example of why. Even people like Vayne can’t deny this fact honestly without losing face in the process.

Yeah, I dunno about a PTR being a good idea for unrelated reasons. Primarily, I think it could lead to people quietly taking down information of what’s upcoming and preparing their Black Lion pocketbooks for it.

For the related reasons, I don’t know if the PTR would catch enough with enough players interested in taking part to realistically emulate live server loads. Remember, often times things break when too many players go trigger the same thing at once . . . that happened on Lost Shores, it happened with Dragon’s Reach Part 1.

Your own poll shows that 82% of voters do not like the new changes (to varying degrees). You can try to spin it however you like, but I don’t think it’s reasonable or believable for you to suggest that these people are blowing it out of proportion or are irrationally angry and discontent.

There isn’t much point to try and reason with him/her, like you said their own poll suggests something different then his/her standpoint but will still argue from his/her chairtop just trying to angle it this way or that. Then, when he/she can’t carry it forward he/she will just dismiss the whole thing as not being that important in the first place.

I hate online polls or forum votes as a means of counting discontent. I would much prefer actual polls where we can be sure one person didn’t vote twice (on any side of the matter) and forums . . . similarly, there’s not much way of knowing who’s behind the user names. At least here, there’s the assumption it’s another person since they would have had to buy a second game otherwise . . .

But there are things to be said here:

First, yes there are people upset over the changes. The changes are quite possibly one of the more messed-up features which got added and until we get some official words on what’s going on with the “bugs vs intentional features” . . . (I don’t bet on it until Monday at the earliest) all that can be said is there’s a lot of improvement which needs to be made here.

Second. There is no point in posting just to say how you won’t talk with someone, or to sling mud around. Be mature and just shrug it off; if Vayne wants to delude himself then that’s his business. If there’s no point to engaging him in talk, then there’s also no point to telling others he’s just the crazy man under the bridge trying to tell you how the world is going to end. Let people engage him or others in conversations at their own peril.

Finally, I really need you to listen closely. The polls on this and the post count of people bashing the update vs supporting it really isn’t all that important. If you learn nothing about a voting system or forum of discussion, learn this well – there is a not-insignificant number of people who will never involve themselves, and never speak up about how they feel one way or the other. Especially if it’s overly hostile as it is regarding this – why say “I dunno I kind of like it” if the atmosphere seems to be that only a survivor of frontal lobotomy would like the changes?

That’s simple to fix. Just add a tutorial bout before starting the actual matches, like in the previous game.

You mean, like, a real tutorial? Wouldn’t it just be better to level-gate Polymock until your character has 300 skill points?

Better as in easier? Sure.

Better as in nicer? Not really. What I mean is the whole “forced tutorial” sort of thing. Harder to do I think, since there’s no quest log to keep track of what you’ve finished . . . making it 0pt achievements seems clunky to me . . .

But it would have to require a tutorial. It was a little complex in the first game – I never finished that chain

I’m just considering the problems of how much data space it would take up. Not serverside so much (though that could be considerable if you multiplied by a million users) as loading it all when loading into the game may slow things down as you add more notes.

Don’t worry. Unless people start composing War and Peace in their map annotations the performance impact of plain text is negligible.

Okay so ranger pet skills F1 and F3 unlock at level 5, Screenshot attached. This is the sort of thing I mean. If you can’t live for 5 levels in the current climate without calling your pet back….I don’t know what to say. And you know if you die, it’s not the biggest deal in the world either, because there’s no armor repair and waypoints are dirt cheap at that level.

Edit: The time between my two posts was 26 minutes btw. That’s how much time it took me to make a new character and level that character to five. I was using no experience booster, food or potion.

No WAI, that 26 minutes without recall pet RUIN WHOLE RANGER CLASS! WHAT WERE YOU THINKING!

yeah ;P

Hey, I’ll have you know my old ranger in GW1 knew how to do that from the moment he first took that wolf into his care and said “go chase rats, stalker, I got a wolf and they’re better”.

Grandsire Tobias was just that much better. Pity he tried going R/W though, don’t know what major malfunction happened in his head for that choice. Didn’t even know how to really wield a hammer.

And don’t get me started on how much better his formula for Troll Unugent was.

. . . you are misreading or I misstated.

You just weren’t specific in regards to which of my examples you were referring to.

Mea culpa. I’m tired and was hurriedly trying to push a new character creation through in order to try this tonight before it got too far from when I got the character slot just to try on this.

I just wanted to make sure that you weren’t implying that the level lock on things like PS and Skill Challenge are bugs.

No, I think they’re just semi-natural extensions of knowing new players could be facing them alone. I know I had to for most of them, and it took me being significantly overleveled to do the one Skill Challenge in Queensdale (Altar Brook Run, the one with the three bandits?)

The PS, like I said, I had one topic I went active in and started a character just to prove a point. It was how Doc Howler was nigh impossible to kill for a thief, if I recall, due to his poison darts. I specifically didn’t overlevel and kept an eye out for the attack to dodge it. I did it on the first try, but . . . reading through the topic it was clear there were a lot of problems over not being aware of how to cure conditions or how crucial it is to find ways to not get hit on that attack.

And I had one PS section which kicked the heck out of my Blood Legion warrior – I only beat it through sheer tenacity and abusing the heck out of Mace/Shield stun lock. I’m pretty sure a lot of other players might not even consider that option, or have it with their own characters.

As such, I find it hard to be . . . too critical of the level requirements now. At the least, it means if they go back and do a balance pass over it they now know what level people should at least be at before attempting them. As opposed to “I sure hope they’re not getting run by friends”.

I don’t know about the diary so much – the amount of memory that could start to accumulate for multiple characters might be a bit much. Account-bound diary seems to almost miss the point somewhat . . . at least, in my mind.

The map markers? I’d love to see that happen, but there’s the issue of memory again. How many markers could be set before it becomes a significant toll when magnified by how many player characters there are total? What about the annotation text you could put in, how bad would that push the memory issue?

If you want 3rd party diary? I suggest Notepad, easiest method and you don’t have to risk installing anything dodgier than Windows.

Things have always been gated, even in Guild Wars 2. Your skills have always been gated. you didn’t unlock your first slot skill to level 5, your second till level ten and your third to level 20. If you believed it was wrong to gate, it should have been wrong last week too.

Okay, just… stop. Stop right there. Stop melding together apples and refuse, you completely missed the argument there.

Yes, skills have always been gated. But I’m talking about things I believe that SHOULD NOT be gated under ANY circumstance, and that’s the very basic functions that NEVER were restricted before = basic pet functions are one of those functions. Please, learn to see the difference.

Okay, I see where you’re going . . . and I’m sorry, I have to disagree somewhat. They should very well be gated under certain circumstances. Most games with pet classes I have seen them nominally gate pets – I say nominally because they unlock so early as to be practically immediately (one night of solid, dedicated play) but not to be front-issued right away.

The pet is fine where it is. Now, the F2 skill . . . I think personally could be a little earlier, but given some of them are probably a bit powerful if acquired early? Yeah, maybe I’m wrong.

Thank you for proving my point. What is the point of upgrading something to make it more inconvenient for both OLD and NEW players alike? Do you honestly believe new players will go through the map and tell themselves “Oh, this game makes me slightly inconvenient, that’s the right game to play then! Carry on!”? If so, you live in some very strange circumstances, mate.

Never played a game which didn’t have its inconveniences. In fact, this game was one of them even back on release. Having to resurrect my pet off the ground was one when it tended to die rather fast against that Champ Troll in Queensdale. OF course, the fact others could do it meant it took some sting out and I could work with that . . . then it was changed so you couldn’t rez it to get it up faster and it was back to being incredibly inconvenient since pets tend to get smeared a lot and the cycling them through was a little slow sometimes.

“It doesn’t change the game for me, so it doesn’t change the game for anyone.” Right. Good idea.
And even better idea: Experienced players, just skip the first 20 levels…. you know, when you change content in a way that people want to skip it with a cheaty scroll, you juuuust maybe might be doing something wrong. Just saying.

People were skipping with them anyway. Not everyone, but I know on most of my alts I actually wanted to play? I did exactly that. Start up, get to bank, drop pre-made armor into inventory and pop scroll.

Then proceed to stomp anything I could in starter areas for completion.

“So no problem if we make it significantly worse.” Okay, this debate is not going anywhere. It’s like debating a masochist whether stabbing yourself feels good.

Define “significantly worse” . . . I’m not having that rough of a time right now playing through a new ranger. If “significant” is “I noticed it” then there’s no point to arguing – I did notice it and must concede on that definition. Anything else . . . eeeeehhhh, it’s not as bad as realizing I need to do the WvW completions again.

For the record, currently playing a fresh norn ranger. At level one in the prelude instance, I could dodge. I could equip bags if I had a means to fetch them, or other things with the right level. (I did not.) I could not control my pet, or open the pet window (K).

As designed, the end of the instance and reward for that story step jumped me into Level 2, during which I learned skill #2 on my longbow. I found I could charm a “Juvenile Raven” near the Raven Shrine and equip it. I could see Points of Interest and Vistas but no Skill Challenges.

Pet window unlocks at level five, along with the F1 and F3 ranger skills, tested and posted a screen shot to another thread.

Indeed, I just got it after a DE.

. . . yes, it seems you do level faster now. So you do learn to control your pet at level 5 and not 22. (What the heck made people think it was that far into the game?)

I really wish they had another word for “features which we set up and worked but not in the ways we thought they were going to”. Because that seems to be the bugs you listed there – things which they worked on, made sure functioned and now are going “wait what”.

I hope I’m not misreading your post. But, you seem to be implying that the personal story being level-locked is a bug.

. . . you are misreading or I misstated. I know that was said to be intentional. So that players could get to level 10 and have the unlocks under their belt before doing it, I imagine. Or, you know, so we don’t have “Doc Howler is too hard, his poison is murderous!” “Condi cleanse you idiot”.

. . . what the heck is Series 7 anyway?

Summon 7-Series Golem
Summon a 7-Series attacking golem to fight for you.

Duration: 40 seconds
Activation time: 2 seconds
Recharge: 180 seconds
This skill cannot be used underwater.

Skill points required to learn: 10

Race: Asura
Slot: Elite (tier 1)

. . . that’d explain it. I never leveled an asura to 30 before. Can’t stand them.

Everything they say about this being bugs and minconceptions is the same, as the guy you cought in the middle of crowd with his hand in your pocket – claiming he needed support due to muscle exhaustion …

Yeah. And, that’s why I can’t take Arenanet seriously anymore. Their PR is laughably bad. As far as “bugs” most of the bugs are extremely obvious. So, there’s really only a few things which we aren’t sure are bugs. For the most part, the things people have been complaining about are not bugs, but design features that were specifically programmed into the game.

Except for those things which are the features not working properly. Though we only have the word of the developers on what is “proper” and not. Make of that what you will.

Series 7 was a bug, the scaling issues are a bug, the experience scaling is a bug. Not being able to use Skill Challenge or personal story before specific levels is not a bug, and it would insult our intelligence if Arenanet would try to lead us to believe that these sorts of features are bugs.

I logged in tonight to play, and it seems that map chat is dead even in WvWvW mode. When it’s not dead, it’s somebody complaining about NPE. It seems that a lot of people have already decided to give GW2 a pass until Arenanet makes an official announcement on which of these changes are here to stay.

I had this experience before tonight, except when there was a group at world bosses. Most WvWvW chatter is more on the TS, or small status reports in /team . . . occasionally you’ll get a request for information or help but they’re not often.

Oh, and Lion’s Arch is still a cesspool people try to start “discussions” of politics or religion in semi-constantly.

But on the other hand, it’s not all that much different than before 9/9.

Currently it feels as if everything in Tyria is dominated by Asura technology, and they seem to be always right.

Well, except for the time they told me I couldn’t fire them out of catapults.

Our policy is that if the tag is wrong the item is free.

The state imposes a $1000 fine for each inaccurate price tag. They don’t ask if we mis-labeled the item intentionally. The audit and fine are based purely on the objective count of items whose price tags do not match the cash register listing. One mis-ship from the printer involving a store receiving prices from another region/state has the potential to mean a million dollar fine….and if an auditor gets that kind of yield out of one store for a given company other stores should expect audits shortly.

. . . in a way, this seems to be one of those things which sounded like a wonderful law to enact when being dreamed up by people trying to stop “greedy and crooked companies” and misfired terribly by swinging in the other direction to punishing them excessively for things they might not have the ability to control.

And that honestly seems to be almost on topic in that sense “Overcorrecting in the opposite way”.

However it’s also not illegal. It’s illegal only if it’s intentional.

This may be the case where you live, but it is not the case everywhere (and I admit that the laws that apply here in California do not apply everywhere either).

The company for which I manage a store runs a weekly sale where special price tags are applied to the sale items. At the end of the week the sale tags are removed. If, as has actually happened, a store is short handed (in one instance it involved most of the staff being down with the flu a couple of years back) and the person pulling the sale tags (hundreds if not thousands of them) rushed and missed a few, and an auditor happens to visit the store the next day before the oversights can be fixed, the store faces a thousand dollar fine for each missed tag. Intentional or not.

This is not a hypothetical situation. A single store missed almost a hundred tags (one aisle) and had a close to $100,000 fine levied against it.

I work at a store where tags are applied similarly, and needing to be taken down. We have a simple policy – remove the offending tag when discovered and if a customer brought the item and contested the system price . . . if it’s within a margin we can alter it and let them have the “wrong price” but nobody else gets it after the issue is resolved.

As far as I know there’s no disciplinary actions taken short of “please try to catch those things more often”.
