The whole idea is to get the one feature people want sooner. And yes if you are the 10% vs the 90% then I’m sorry? We get what we vote for. If the majority wants flying toilets then we’re getting flying toilets. Sorry.

No, no, don’t apologize if you’re not really sorry. You mean this proposition seriously, while I don’t think many would take it seriously or even think of it.

Then move on to the next thing we want and agree on. It’s not only getting what we want but this allows when we get them.

Don’t contradict yourself in the same post, that’s always going to look sketchy. You already admitted “we” aren’t going to get all the things “we” want, but one of “us” might if we voted “the right way”.

Democracy is not always the answer to making something better.

Then what is the answer? It’s the people that don’t want change that kill games.

You are asking me for an answer to a problem which has so many facets I’d have to use scientific notation to start keeping track. And I’ll note, I’m a end-user and not a programmer or a developer in any stretch of those two terms. I’m not qualified to make decisions of that level for everyone with the authoritative “this will fix everything” stance.

. . . to be honest, neither are you.

As for your last comment there about “the people who don’t want change kill games” . . . you’re right, and you’re wrong. See, there are two ways a game dies.

Type 1 – The game never changes, and it becomes a stagnant and ever-tightening clique of hardcore and devoted gamers who leave newcomers confused or distanced to the point there’s no more new players, The game slowly bleeds through attrition, and then one day you look around and nobody else is logging in. I have played MMOs which did this.

Type 2 – The game changes often, or even radically, in an effort to keep the population happy based on what the developers think is needed. Sometimes that is gleamed from listening to the players, and sometimes it’s just new content being shoveled out to try to appease people for another month. Despite all efforts, the constant changing winds turn veterans off and new players are uneasy about radical changes which may invalidate what they will put effort into. The game dies because people are too afraid to connect to a game which seems unable to decide what it is. I have, also, played MMOs and games under active development which do this.

Since you solicited my opinion, here it is:

The key isn’t to change for the sake of change, or to kowtow to the most vocal (or most “devoted”) of the players. It’s to change things when the change feels right, and add new things steadily rather than dumping them in all at once.

Do with it what you will. I have little more to say on this topic.

My Greatest Fear Plotline

If the general issue was that “the later chapters do not focus on you, the Commander all that much but with Trahearne with his Wyld Hunt and all”, cutting the Greatest Fear plotline that was the most personalized plot since you joined an Order, was the most counter-productive reaction to an issue that I have seen for some time.

Like I said, I don’t think that this was cut out on purpose. If it was, then the wiki should either reflect that change along with an official statement on the preview blog for the Feature Patch indicating that certain parts will be removed. Even the patch notes clearly say that they are just changing the order of chapters here and not deleting anything. If I recall the files related to the unplayable quests are still present. It’s just that but rearranging the story, it could have resulted in continuity issues.

But how is it that a huge hunk of the story could be cut on accident?

Well . . . I do know how, and I do not agree with “not cut on purpose” – I think they did want to cut something to trim things, and there’s where we got the accident which caused the whole thing to go “poof”.

As I have said many times, the story really needed to be tightened up . . . still needs tightening. I think it would have been a better design to create a Personal Story which doesn’t just run in a linear path but offers side-branches and plots you could explore if you liked and had complete arcs to them rather than teasing glimpses of bigger things going on in Tyria.

I’ve always been a sucker for nonlinear story development, though. I seriously enjoyed novels where there was not a single perspective from which the story was told, but multiple angles. (Timothy Zahn and Tad Williams, please report to the front desk for your gold stars on this front.)

Don’t the champions in the Claw of Jormag event already not drop loot? I’ve tried to get them to, but not even Champion Bags 90% of the time – if they do drop, it’s a junk drop (“Cold Stone” type).

If you see me fighting one, it’s usually because they’re pounding downed people or messing with the golems before they can get moving.

I lean to the first more often than the second, and the horrible aspect of implementation is . . . depends on what we discuss, and I have a different value of “horrible implementation”.

I suppose then:

Acceptable writing – uneven implementation is more what I feel about the game. Seems for every cool thing we get, there’s a part where I scratch my head and go “. . . whyyyyyy?”

Designing games by committee never works. Most people aren’t as good at game design as they think they are.

You get more bees with honey then vinegar.

Are you sure about that?

Us as one can make a choice. And how can it not work when all of the community and players as one want the same thing?

Because not everyone wants the same thing? I mean besides a “spawn Precursor” button. And, notably, even if we could agree on one thing . . . it’s unlikely we could all agree on how to have that one thing.

Its not about game design, its what we all want in the game. This is why we vote. if it ruins it for the 10% in favor of the 90% thats a win. that 10% isnt gonna pour money into anets wallet. the 90% will.

So, let me get this straight, your argument about the voting system is “it’s okay if only the majority get what they want, the minority obviously isn’t going to pay anyway”.

. . . which means I’m now obligated to stop paying for gems if the vote does something I don’t want, like, adding Cantha.

Maybe it’s humans taking trophies like in the past when they would take charr hides, or centaur manes, or gargoyle skulls . . .

I would really, REALLY hope not.

These are sentient creatures, and while we may be at war with them, there should be limits on how nasty we will be. Honestly, we’ve seen that they can even be potential allies (Dry Top, the (missing?) historian centaur in LA).

As bad as it is to think that humans might be doing that, what about the sylvari? I simply can’t imagine any grove sylvari cutting off a centaur’s hooves as trophies.

Really, the only other thing I can think of is an underground glue market needed to produce all the copies of “Koss on Koss”. After all, glue does take up a relatively important part of the binding process and magic can only do so much . . .

Why GW2 just isn't working

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Tobias Trueflight.8350

Tobias Trueflight.8350

Comparing GW1 to GW2 is fun.

I mean, look at it like this. You could do FoW/DoA/UW in NM and HM with heroes and henchies. Okay its difficult. But it is 100% possible.

You can also do them with a PUG group. It is 100% possible to complete all the end game areas.

You can also have a guild/good group and complete them properly. For example, speed clear (HM speed runs) or Physway or whatever way you like.

The difference between GW1 and GW2 is that in GW1 people had a roll. You had healers and tanks and dps. This allowed instances or dungeons to be more diverse. They could be more challenging and they could be interesting.

Boss fights now is just spank. No tank and spank. Just spank. Oh you have to attack it from over here? great. Its still all attacking from 1 spot.

If we actually had tanks / emnity healers and dps there could actually be some variety. However right now, they have limited themselves to how the game can expand.

I don’t think you could do those elite instances in Guild Wars 1 solo with heroes. For one thing, heroes didn’t even exist for the first two years the game was out. When they did come out, you could only take 3 with you.

And you could still ‘solo’ Underworld if you really . . . REALLY . . . knew what you were doing. Though, Assassins had an easier time until the balance bat got swung . . . it got harder when Dhuum was added, but most people I know who ‘solo-ran’ were more interested in squeezing Ectos out.

I’m thinking it would be nigh on impossible to do The Deep or Urgoz’s Warren with three heroes. Henchmen couldn’t enter elite areas, and using 7 heroes wasn’t allowed until much much later in the game’s life cycle.

Urgoz’s is hard since there’s the required Necrotic Traversal point. The Deep I didn’t do as much but I suspect there’s also a point where you do ‘need’ to have another meat person on the matter.

Domain of Anguish though . . .

If GW2 is not working then why has it out lasted 2 major mmorpg that play a lot like it? GW1 at the end of the day was not a true mmorpg it was an online game with co-op GW2 is a full open world mmorpg there are just truth to dealing with that type of game vs just the simple “also has online play” type of game.

GW2 could not have done worse. They had so many players and everyone left. Can you imagine that a game from 1998 (also from ncsoft) is making twice as much profit every month compared to gw2? That’s how bad gw2 is doing lol.

It could have done a lot worse, actually.

Speaking of games from NCsoft which had worse happen . . . despite from all appearances not losing money . . .

Honestly, it’s the booster I would get more interested in. Especially if I, well, never bought Keys. There’s only so many avenues for you to get your hands on them.

Those boosters don’t really benefit a new player, or do really much good. The reward is there so they can call it a reward system, even though we were better off getting loot from mob drops in story content, but they stripped that out of the game as well.

The Karma Boosters would definitely benefit a new player, since they don’t have the same depths of Karma surplus I’m sure older players do. After all, 500,000 will get them a full exotic suit of armor at 80 with no muss, no fuss, and a minimum of screaming.

Are you kidding with that stuff? Anet control supply, hence they can modify drop rates…with ease I might add. That means not only can they increase the drop rates of all precursors, they can increase the drop rates of ANYTHING, that includes all necessary crafting materials.

You point out “bugs” and whatnot as a reason for not fixing this. Stop moving the goalposts. The same bugs and problems have plagued the game for YEARS.
Bugs and gameplay issues have nothing to do with this stuff. Features? Content? Are you even playing this game?

smh

All it shows is that either Anet does not care, or they see it as healthy and “working” or that they are actually incapable of fixing this issue because they lack peopel with the necessary skills and knowledge.
At this point, I’m opting for the latter.

And I’m noting you decided to not address his post much at all other than to reiterate what he responded to with his post detailing at least some of the issues with just turning the drop rate up without thinking on it.

I can’t even understand this sentence. What? Please use grammar.

It’s grammatically correct enough, mind you, for you to understand without needing to add semicolons; they aren’t always necessary, when writing a single thought down.

But thanks for not responding at all to me other than to say you weren’t going to respond to me. That tells me all I need to know.

I just want to make 1 more point. If we add in a “precursor system” then we will deflate the economy no matter what. There is no way around that. So we either get it and they fix the system so it’s not so built around a horrendous amount of grinding and farming, or they don’t.

It’s as simple as that. If you want more easily accesssible legendaries, then I am afraid you are gonna have to deal with that. If not, then you won’t. Do I think it’s fair? Not in the slightest. The inflation at the moment is making people have to spend more and more gold as time goes on if they want to “buy” their legendary. This is an effective punishment for arriving late to the game. The interesting thing I see is that we are seeing inflation on precursors at the >100% level but we aren’t seeing the Gem>Gold ratio change at the same rate whatsoever.

Again this is a serious problem and something we can only adress by increasing drop rates.

IDK what else to say, but I don’t get why people are defending this. It’s bad for new players and punishes new players over older players for literally no reason, in effect punishing them in mathematicall squared fashion > less time total played = less gold and arriving later in the game = more inflation = your gold is worth less.

Defending it? You really aren’t reading what people are saying, are you? Illconceived told you flat out it wasn’t a problem with a simple answer, due to interconnected issues which would follow from just turning the drop rate up.

They weren’t defending it – they were explaining why we haven’t seen anything yet, and probably by extension one reason the “alternate Precursor acquisition methods” haven’t materialized – solve the problem of them being available, run into four more.

Personally, I think it should have been solved by making all parts of the Legendary account bound and ANet wiping their hands clean afterwards.

Like it or not, the price of Precursors is something they’re wary of monkeying with too much. Especially since if there are more Precursors available, then there’s the cascade of effects from that which have to be considered . . . and the note that they probably won’t be worth as much on the trading post for people who want Precursors just to turn them on the market.

I could say the same thing about my GW1 character. Or my D&D characters, or my MTG deck . . .

if your mtg deck isnt unique, thats by choice, they have so many possibilities, its probably way greater than 10 billion

Oh it’s unique in its own way but a Blue/Black mill deck is usually . . . going to involve blue and black cards, and the goal of making you drop cards from your library out of play until you lose.

That’s like saying every ranger is the same, because they have two pets and a limited amount of weapons and skills available. There is the same narrow band of options, while still retaining a chance to have some individuality. But everyone still knows “Ranger” or “Blue/Black Mill” means a particular thing, even if they don’t know what exactly it is.

Also, I think the individuality of a character or a deck or whatever isn’t in the construction (writing, design, whatever) . . . it’s in the actor/player behind the face.

With the wording on the op’s message i’m pretty sure that’s what they don’t want.

To read between the lines, the op means :
“how to make things better for WvW players against siege trolls, without hindering normal play (define it first), without GMs/human intervention, with minimal dev/test time so it’s doable, because WvW is still the 1996567th Wheel of GW2 but since we started playing it this week we started seeing the gigantic problems/bugs/misshaps that are plaguing it and we want to at least try to correct them”.

I’m fairly certain they don’t want to do that. But I’m convinced, like Lord Kuru, any system will be surmounted by the truly dedicated trollers at best . . . or at worst, used as tools to reinvent the trolling.

Especially if we let in things with voting by players.

Serously, John, I think the easiest solution is just to review reports of trolling in WvW (add a new category to report or expand “harassment” to include it) and attribute some people actively review the claims.

People who have said the biggest reason for the trolling is a lack of consequence . . . are mostly right. Some of the trolls don’t care, they buy accounts on the cheap when it goes on sale and use them. What’s $30 in comparison to tons of lulz messing with people? When they can do something like ditch golems out in the corner of a borderland, or jump them off the borderland keep walls until they break?

There has to be a clear message from you good folks at ArenaNet of this thing not being tolerated and will be acted upon.

Adding a system into place to put hoops into place to ostensibly prevent this siege griefing/trolling? Is really going to hurt legitimate players as well, to some extent.

Before investigating a system . . . take the time now during this tournament to begin policing these events. I would almost wager it would curtail most of the obvious trolling.

Anyone want to replay personal story quests?

Living Story 1 is going to be tricky to adjust for replay. Some of the stuff was designed for open world and nothing like either the Personal Story or Living Story 2. I just don’t see how it could happen without inventing new stuff to resemble what was going on.

Not to mention they took the two things which could have been a decent story instance (Molten Facility and Aetherblade Hideout) and turned them into Fractals.

Why GW2 just isn't working

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

So I logged back into my GW1 account yesterday, just to have a potter about for old times sake.

Did a few “solo” runs including some of the old stuff that I developed for the Ranger’s Beacon in The Jade Sea and The Deep.

Grabbed henchies and heroes and had a few bashes at dropping a froggy sceptre.

Took some folks on a guided tour of the Fissure

Went and capped a Black Widow solo – just because I could.

and then something stopped me in my tracks. I realised that I cared about my toons, felt connected to them. They had a personality and playing the game was FUN!

I’m not sure, but that might be because you spent longer with the GW1 characters than GW2 ones (at most, 2 years and a month versus at most . . . seven? Eight?. . . )

Most of what you described is repeating the same stuff “just because I can” – which is what I see some complaints about with regards GW2. “There’s nothing to do but the same stuff over and over.”

And most of that I got tired of halfway through Year Six of Guild Wars 1. I logged on for special events and . . . that was it. I did a few Zaishen Quests now and again, made a few more stabs at Legendary Defender of Ascalon . . . but after asking myself “Why?” I found myself just setting the game down and walking away.

I’ve done the same occasionally for GW2, as well as other games. (Minecraft, Civ5, Digital Devil Saga . . . )

More than that, I could play GW1 in various styles and no part of the game world was “off limits” or restricted.

I could technically do the Deep or Urgoz’s Warren, Fissure of Woe, et cetera . . . but I wouldn’t get far. So, it might as well not exist for me.

And that’s where GW2 has failed. Sure it looks pretty, but there simply isn’t the connection, my toons have no personality and the game is an un-ending grind for cosmetic skins, short term FPS “shoot and scoot” mentality and Anet wasting effort on trivial “improvements” rather than letting players PLAY in a style that suits them.

Sad that after such a short time GW2 has become a pale imitation of its predecessor.

I think it’s less a pale imitation of Guild Wars 1 (it was never meant to be) and more its own game. Whether I think that game is any good or not . . . depends on how I feel that day about the community.

My Greatest Fear Plotline

But wouldn’t the quickest way to fix all the flaws in the story be to put it back in the correct order?

Not really, considering the story had flaws and troubles beforehand. Besides, I’m more talking about the smaller things such as a character not remembering you despite the fact they should. (Happens more than once.)

It is true that there were PS flaws even before the Feature Pack patch, such as the one you mentioned- but now they’ve added to those flaws by removing the Greatest Fear plotlne and and reorganizing the last two chapters. Previously, characters you’ve met and worked with suddenly don’t know you after their part in your story is done. Now, characters you’ve met don’t know you and characters you haven’t meet already know you. In addition, you do things before it makes sense to do them, such as taking down the Eyes of Zhaitan before you even know what they do.

Before introducing more problems with an update, ANet should have fixed the old problems first. And given the points raised here, they need not change the PS further to begin with.

No argument there about it, mostly because I haven’t gotten there with the PS on my next-lowest character.

I was just pointing out . . . there wasn’t anything new about plot holes, dangling plot hooks, or just inconsistent experiences. While this just adds another basked, I half expect now they want to get a list to get to work on rather than just tunnel-vision. But I’m not there so . . .

You can’t report them.. for what? Being afk? Sadly this game allows you to be afk and get as much rewards as other players (especially at world bosses).

Actually you can, this was brought up way back in beta about engineer turrets, an ANet dev said you can in fact report people for using AI like this, and the discussion is what eventually lead to the turrets being given a five minute self-destruct. Perhaps they should do that with all pets?

That said I don’t report them, but I don’t even report bots. Farmers, in whatever form they come in, do far more to keep the games reward content in reach of casual players than any member of ANets economics team.

Reminds me of the bridge event in Kessex Hills which had a ton of Engineers there shortly after launch which pretty much monopolized the event. On the plus side, it usually finished . . . on the minus side? Hard to outpace them all for credit.

Easy. Code in an invisible circle (of radius 450 or so) in front of the gate of every structure. This invisible circle will represent an area where only flame rams can be deployed. If you try to throw anything other than a flame ram in this invisible circle, it won’t let your siege be thrown. Change the flame rams such that they can ONLY be thrown in the invisible circle and if you try to throw a flame ram, say, in an open field, it won’t let you throw it.

Except I’ve seen Flame Rams used on top of staircases for blockage vs enemy zergs sometimes . . .

The cures seems worse than the disease.

What about adding a report option and simply Banning toxic players?
It can easily checked by logs i guess.

Once you banned some it becomes a detherrent.

Reading the OP, it seems Anet is not willing to spend the effort/money on GMs (which would easily solve the problem overnight). Yet they are currently doing exactly this for catching dungeon exploiters.

They probably don’t want to have to move to live monitoring of their players. From what I’ve seen between this and GW1 – they really don’t like interfering without just cause.

Unfortunately, sometimes you do have to roll up the sleeves, grab hold of the Might Banhammer +6 . . . and whack-a-troll.
