From DCUO, permanently unlocked armour styles that can then be applied to any armour at no cost, as many times as you like. And it also had complete colour freedom, allowing you to dye your armour any colour you liked without having to unlock dyes.
^this – and….
Player housing + the carpenter tradeskill from EQ2.
A crossbow is all I want.
I’m against it as I think it would hurt the game in the long term.
There’s a reason they want you to log in every day, it makes you join the rest of the community and keeps the game populated. There are a lot of players who would complete the achievements in a day, then not log in for the rest of the week. They’d go to another game to get their ‘sense of accomplishment’. For a few weeks they might log in and keep doing their ‘required’ content to keep up with everyone else. Then the other game they’re playing to feel satisfied will be more appealing to them and they’ll stop logging in altogether.
If you log in once a day and you complete a handful of quests you’re likely meeting other players along the way, selling things or buying things on the broker and you’re exposed to whatever it is they’re selling in the gem store. They shouldn’t be encouraging players to log in less often.
At the end of the day, the rewards are not required by players to achieve anything in the game. They’re purely cosmetic – designed to reward players that contribute to the community. Logging in once a week shouldn’t be rewarded in the same way logging in once a day is – you’re not contributing as much to the community. That’s just my opinion.
i thought the review was well thought out and I enjoyed reading it. I think if ArenaNet were to hire the author they’d likely get a lot of fresh, innovative ideas for their game. What I took away from the review was this message: Don’t settle for the status quo, this game could be so much better than the run of the mill MMOs out there. I agree with that.
Hey Kaizer,
I don’t know if this will help you or not but when I played Aion and WoW I had to pay an extra $5 per month for a thing called Battleping which tunnels through to different switches to get you a better connection to the game’s servers. I don’t know if this supports GW2 or not but the difference with both of those games was significant – I experienced no lag in either game with Battleping. I normally use ADSL 2 and I’m on a plan with Dodo. I live in Toowoomba and my connection is very stable with GW2, I don’t have any rubber banding. Make sure you have the latest drivers for your network adapter as well.
I love it. I think it’s the way all MMO games should go. All the servers accessing one broker keeps the prices down low. No one seems to be cornering a market like in other games. I’ve played seven MMORPGs extensively and this is the first game I’ve played where I’m happy with the broker system. Making money is hard in this game – as it should be in every game. Diablo 3 is an example of a broken economy, reminiscent of Germany’s economy after WW2.
If you haven’t purchased the coin via a gems transfer and you’re wealthy in this game, I take my hat off to you.
i would prefer player housing instead of guild halls. In other games where guild halls were there,i never used it, i dont see the point of it
What the chicken said but with my name on it.
I can’t defend people who go away from online games for a period of time then return and expect to be at the same level as everyone else. The game moves forward as there are more players who want to experience something new than there are those who never want the game to change.
I think you’d have to be very naive to believe that a game company would provide an online experience and not release new content that might entice their players to spend more money.
I have to ask though, do the same players who expect to be able to keep up with everyone else without putting in any effort actually think anything in life works that way? Do you think you can bum around in school, under achieve your way through life and still expect to earn as much as someone who puts in the effort to have more than you? Where does this self entitlement come from?
Personally I think GW2 is the perfect MMORPG. It’s just lacking one thing that I really miss from EQ2, player housing and a carpenter tradeskill that can make player furniture to decorate the house.
Other than that, I think ArenaNet have made an outstanding game and I’m really grateful for the amount of detail they’ve put into it.
Bobby, try to get Hayden Panettiere to voice some female lines in the game. I could listen to her voice a million times and it would never get boring.
I get what you’re saying.
You know what would be cool is if a random player from another server was selected during a WvWvW battle and you received a unique skin if you managed to kill them. They’d also have the same ‘quest’ to eliminate you. On the battlefield their name would be in hot pink or something to make them stand out more. Of course you might have to wade through dozens of their guild mates to get to them but it would make PvP a lot more interesting.
I think the quest “Assist Arias in maintaining his garden” is bugged. When I was transformed into the tree, the camera was way too close. I zoomed out as far as I could but the camera is still too close and it’s hard to see the tree. This is a level 7 quest. I play a human male if that helps.
That’s some good advice, it gives me something to think about. Thanks for your help!
I might have time for two characters. As I have a ranged character, maybe if I make a melee character that would give me some variety and it would be possible to maintain both characters. I purchased the game on 28/3/2013 and I hit 80 today. I’ve tested some other classes, I have a Guardian at 12 and a Warrior at 5. From the melee characters the Warrior looks the most appealing and would give me some variety.
So I just hit level 80 on my first character. I haven’t been playing for long but I love this game so far.
In every other MMO I’ve played I’ve always created multiple toons but this game seems to encourage you to invest in one character. Getting 100% on the map, acquiring Legendary gear, doing monthlies, dailies, crafting etc.. – all of it would take a considerable amount of time. How would anyone find the time to unlock it all with multiple toons? I only have a few hours a day and around 5 hours on Sat/Sun to play, would that be enough time to have multiple well geared toons or would I be better to just sink my time into my main? I play an Elementalist, the other classes look fun too so I’m kind of confused about what I should do next. Is it a case of having a bunch of mediocre characters or one really well geared character? Maybe I’m over analyzing things.
Thoughts?
I’m not sure you best represent most players, so ArenaNet taking your advice and dedicating a team to create content for the minority might not be such a great move for them.
Can I please have your account Provost? It sounds awesome and I just started playing the game about three weeks ago. I may be jaded after a years worth of gameplay but so far I’m enjoying it immensely.
Centaurs would top my wish-list. GW2 is, after all, the self-proclaimed “MMO Revolution.” It’s time to throw off the yoke of biped character model oppression!
Also Krait.
I’d love to play as a Centaur, no other game has something like that in it. The frog species in this game remind me of the Frogleks in EverQuest. The Char remind me of the Krogan in Mass Effect. The Asuri are basically Yoda. The Sylvari are unique but you can see they drew on a lot of inspiration from the Night Elves in WoW. I play as a human in this game but I think the Norn are the coolest looking playable race – they remind me of the Barbarian from the Diablo series.
Ha! You guys think that’s impressive? I had ten times that much gold in Diablo 3 and I only played it for a week. Now praise me and my exploits.
I love the game too but I have one major regret with it – I really wish I purchased it when it first came out. Sorry Anet, I should have had more faith in you. Rest assured, I won’t be going anywhere. Keep up the good work!
Lord of the rings online has a wicked housing system complete with ur own house on your own street with front garden and all. i loved this about that game and spec the way u could custom it all to ur taste. i tend to go with the creepy/halloween feel.
would love to see something like that here
+1 to you and the OP, I’d love to see that as well. EQ2 has similar player housing, except it’s all instanced and over a hundred people share pretty much the same location (though the insides are different). I heard LOTRO had the best player housing system in any MMO but I haven’t played that game.
Also, if they do release housing they should roll out Carpenter or Homemaker crafting profession with it. One where players can make furniture to fill the house. EQ2 has that system.
+1
I like their customer support. I had to use it and I was very happy with the result. I’ve used other MMO companies customer support over the years and they’ve all been rather poor. Customer support is important to me.
In every MMO game, I try to look like this:
http://consolereviver.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Darksiders-II-screenshots.jpg
Why? Because War from Darksiders is the coolest looking character I’ve ever seen.
It’s good for one character. It can mine anything.
I bought one. I love sinking my big pick into some soft ’ore.
In my opinion, you should always use correct grammar. Perfect practice makes perfect. The more you use it, the better you’ll get at it. Like others in this thread, I can’t help but think someone who writes poorly is either uneducated or very young (under 13).
I’d like to see a Juggernaut type of class brought into the game. No weapons, just pure brawling / boxing. Make them heavily armored and use special fist blades or knuckle dusters as weapons. They could charge enemies, head butt them (to stun), pick them up by their throat and hurl them. Something like that would be unique and fun to play as.
I tend to look up the person behind the voice if I like their voice. Like Miranda in Mass Effect 2 – she had a very sexy voice and I was pleasantly surprised when I found out it was Yvonne Strahovsky. Hayden is the most attractive celebrity in the world today – having someone of that caliber in a game like this can only be a good thing. Make it happen Anet!
Please consider getting Hayden Panettiere to voice a character in future content for the game. Hayden has done a number of voice roles for computer games and animated movies and I think she’d be a great addition to this game. Plus she’s hot. Thanks!
It will run it but not well. I have two laptops, an Asus ROG A73 model and an Alienware M17x model. Both were built around the same time. The ROG runs GW2 much slower than the Alienware – it’s very noticeable when my wife and I are playing co-op. I zone well before she does and sometimes she is still killing things that are dead on my screen. She is closer to the router as well. Both are gaming laptops too, in case you didn’t know – both have better specs than your machine. If you can afford it, get an Alienware, they make excellent gaming laptops.
First of all, I really love this game so far. I can safely say I’ll be playing it for a long time to come.
I heard that GW2 might be getting player housing. This is wonderful, as it’s something that would really fit in well with the game and give players a place to return back to. A new ‘utility’ type spell that allows you to teleport back to your house from the field would be perfect. Inside your house you should be able to pick items up that you’ve purchased on the Trade Post.
Here’s something that would take housing to a new level – Carpentry.
In EQ2 (forgive me for referencing this, EQ2 was my first MMO and though I love GW2, EQ2 still has a special place in my heart) you could craft furniture and other items to place in your house. You could make a safety deposit box (think Bank) where you could leave items. Lighting, fireplaces, chairs, beds, weapon racks, carpet, rugs, wood paneling – the list went on – could all be made by a tradeskill called the Carpenter. You received discounts by purchasing items directly from someone’s house, instead of via the Trade Post. This encouraged players to visit other players homes.
Homes in EQ2 were like a mini game – people took great pride in their homes and the way they designed them with furniture. Carpenters were a viable money making tradeskill.
You could also earn special ‘house’ rewards via questing. Difficult quests in EQ2 rewarded you with unique weapons. Once you out-leveled the weapons, you could convert the weapon into an ornament for your house. Veteran players would have a large quantity of unique weapons decorating the walls of their homes – trophies to brag about.
You could also craft from within your home, which wasn’t very practical but a novelty nonetheless. Holiday events would also reward players with holiday theme items to place in your home, like a Christmas tree.
If GW2 does launch player housing, please consider accompanying the player housing with a new trade skill – the Carpenter. Your player base for this game is well suited to this kind of addition to the game. I expect a lot of ‘PvP’ type players to say this is not needed and that there are more important things to add, but the bulk of your playerbase are casual gamers who I believe would really get a lot out of a well designed player housing model.
TLDR: Please consider bringing in a Carpenter trade skill to accompany Player Housing when you release it.
I thought I was listening to Urdnot Wreave from Mass Effect 2 when I first heard Rytlock – so I looked up the voice actor to confirm my suspicions. Little did I know just how many characters Steve Blum has voiced over the years. I think I’ve played over half the games on his impressive resume! Check out the amount of work he’s had over the past 15+ years.
It’s a pretty valid point. I’m 33 and I feel like the game was made specifically for me – which I’m grateful for. I’d also like to see some content introduced that includes the OPs demographic – there is plenty there for my demographic already.
It wasn’t a macro. I’ve only had the game for a week now, so I’m not an expert by any stretch of the imagination. The problem I have is I’m running out of buttons to assign on my keypad / mouse. It would be nice to cycle between the attunements during combat like you can swap between weapons with other professions.
I play an Elementalist using a G13 keypad and a G600 mouse. The other day I was cycling between F1-4 using a button on my mouse. Then I reset my mouse by accident and now I can’t work out how to cycle between the F1-4 keys without actually hitting the F1-4 keys. Is there a key that cycles between them or was I just dreaming? I can’t find the key command anywhere.
I played EQ2 for three years, WoW for a year, Aion for a year, DCUO for 18 months, TERA for a year, Diablo 3 for 6 months – and a bunch of other games in between. This is the first game I’ve played where I’ve been genuinely impressed by customer support for a game.
I purchased two copies of GW2 from their website for the full price two days ago. Then I noticed they had a sale yesterday, with 30% off the game. I emailed them to ask if they could do anything for me – I knew I just missed the sale but hoped they could upgrade my account to the deluxe version or something. Customer support was very empathetic to my situation and ended up giving me the difference between the price I paid and the sale price in gems. To be honest I didn’t really think I’d get anything, but I like to see how the company treats it’s customers before I put a lot of time and effort into a game.
Anyway, thanks for the gems Customer Support! I’ll likely spend a hundred times that amount in your store over the coming years. Great Customer Service means a lot to me and I do appreciate it.
