Whatever the application, please… please please A-Net do NOT give this to PVE players to test.
It really does seem like A-net is missing a huge opportunity here.
Did anyone see where Fast Hands went?
So…
Personally I think the map looks great and the new mechanics are just a challenge to overcome, master, then use to ones advantage. I have run a small scale “Havoc” guild for some time and this map looks like gravy for us.
The problem I foresee is the inevitable change to the existing Meta.
Out of this map a new breed of WVW players and Commanders will emerge and the old guard will have to adapt or be left behind.
I believe that the Devs at A-Net have played WvW and they are doing what they think is right for the vast majority of players, not catering to the “just for da fites” types that cry the loudest.
For the record, I like “Da fites”.
However, I will not make any judgement until I see it in play, and right now, I am so bored of what we have in WVW I welcome anything new.
I dunno,
It looked pretty cool, however I could see YB getting a collective “arousing experience” for all the possible AC placements…
I reserve judgement until it is playable… then I will complain.
Yet again, an answer to a question nobody asked.
This is designed solely to break Hammer Trains.
Meh, like everything else, true WvW-rs will adapt, the rest will come here and complain.
A very well written and well thought out post OP. I agree.
Personally I think it’s a fun new mechanic added to WvW that has certainly freshened it up a bit, however I feel the disable time on rams is too long, it should be the same as golems (20sec), either that or single target only.
2 cents:)
Dear God, WoW tried this very same tactic, they are down to 6 million subs from 12 million?
Same here, also from BC Canada, honestly, WvW is unplayable in this state:(
Sorry, was off for a bit:)
I, as a rule I don’t Zerg, I run a havoc group and my role is to support the Zerg by disrupting enemy BL’s to take their attention away from EBG or to train an enemy BL to keep them distracted while the Zerg mounts an offensive. It is very much a partnership, ASSUMING the Zerg commander is doing more than simply K-training. If a Zerg is an army, under competent rule then it is an asset. A bunch of mindless PuGs is a whole other ballgame, yet one I can still work with:)
Didn’t mean to sound snarky btw, it was late:) Keep up the discussion.
I love how every one of your “answers” is designed to have negative repercussions.
As a Havoc driver I simply do what needs to be done to win the engagement, if it means joining a “zerg” then I will do it, most of the time I will support the “zerg” by opening supply lines and causing distractions.
The problem with people who think like you is that they don’t see WvW in a big picture, “Zergs” represent armies, that is how war works, armies fight armies, calling them “zergs” and trying to denigrate people for partaking is both selfish and ridiculous based on the way the game is set up.
If you prefer a more solo-friendly play style that is PvP then I suggest SPvP.
Teq is fine. Do you really want everything to be easy?
OP,
Well thought out and well written post. I agree.
Yes, they’ve had a year to voice their displeasure. At what point do you stop beating a dead horse.
Since the company will never have the game they advertised or envisioned, I’d say never. People have had a year to listen to folks voice their displeasure. At what point do people complaining about the complainers stop beating that dead horse?
I would disagree, I think the game is brilliant. Just my opinion of course, however I am not one of those that dislikes the game and comes here to endlessly complain and try and derail all threads with their own personal agendas.
I really don’t understand people. I have been playing MMOs since UO first came out and it’s been the same thing in every public forum. Nothing but complaining. If you are not happy then go away. The OP was trying to voice his appreciation for a game and dev team that he enjoys.
Personally, I am still enjoying this game. I love the fact that there are content updates so frequently, even when it is content I am not fond of, such as SAB. Is it perfect? No, but then nothing is ever perfect. However, after a year I am still playing with only two of the character classes in this game not at max level, each fully decked out in at least exotic, and 1 with full ascended. I like the direction the game is going and I do not see me leaving this game anytime soon.
To the OP: I commend you on voicing your appreciation to a team that mostly only hears negativity for trying to create some enjoyment in the world. I am right there with you!
There is an old saying; “You will catch more flies with honey then you will with vinegar.” Some of you may want to think on that.
You, like all the white knights here, miss the actual problem.
The people who, like myself, voice their dislike for the game do it because of the time and money we’ve invested into the game itself. We were told “everything we like” about a game will be present, and in reality, it’s a kittenty kittening excuse for a game. It’s a bunch of children and old people who grind out APs for small rewards that, in the long run, mean nothing. There’s no incentive to do it other than that small box you get in the middle right hand corner with some kitten that’s purely there to keep people coming back every day. That’s not fun. Neither is tryharding my kitten off for mats to get to the next level of teir. And before you say “luls you don’t need it to do anything in the game l2p”, how long will it last? Really. Tell me how long before people in LFG will look for people only in full Ascended to get the fastest run possible without a hitch.
Tell me what kind of armour polish you use, if you don’t mind. I’d like to buy some so I can, for a day, act out of your shoes when regarding this game. I want to see what enjoyment is received from defending this game and all of it’s short comings with all of my might.
Wow… just… wow

Well said!
To those others who continue to say they are just “Sticking around because they hope the game will change” are kind of, well delusional. A-Net has stated where they are going and have not bowed to the endless whining ever… at all.
I love this game and support it and it’s direction 100%. If a patch comes out that I have no interest in (SAB) I simply don’t do it and go about my day. If new armors, weapons, rings etc etc etc come out that are slightly better but in no way actually affect my gameplay then I simply ignore it and go about my day, knowing eventually I will get enough Laurels, tokens, shards or w/e to accumulate them. If there is a bug that needs fixing I will be sad but I do understand that a company is always going to put new content over bug fixes all the time, and I go about my day.
I understand that folks are passionate about their games but seriously? Some of you are so bent out of shape…
You are not being forced to learn to play a musical instrument or being force to play a youth sport that you have no interest in learning or playing.
You bought a product. You don’t like it. You state your opinion to the manufacturer why you don’t like it. They don’t address your concerns. You chalk it up to a bad buying decision and you move on.
You don’t set up camp and a soap box on their property and restate your objections over and over and over again for the rest of the product’s lifespan. We get it, you don’t like it for reasons XYZ.
If this was a subscription based MMO then you would have to keep paying to hang around protesting but since it’s a buy to play game you get the linger here forever and frankly after a year it’s getting old.
The only hope we have against you types is when ESO, Black Desert or whatever new MMO you choose comes out is that when it disappoints your echo chambered, self deluded expectations that you will then glom onto their forum and we can have relative peace and quiet with players that are willing to provide constructive criticism rather than a list of nonnegotiable demands.
This exactly.
I love my Charr, both of them and I come to you humans as a diplomat, of sorts.
We Charr do not hate you, or your culture, or Gods.
This I can say with certainty, we simply view you as a yet, untapped, food source.
Now go about your business.
:)
It doesn’t matter that it’s free. If we don’t enjoy it, it’s not worth it.
It matters because you have no Sub to hold as hostage
We were promised GW1 with better graphics. And we mostly got it at release.
Nope, you need to go watch some youtubez.
You shouldn’t change the core of the game like that. It feels like playing a completely different game, one I won’t enjoy now.
GW1 is still up and running.
With all the complaining about “Endgame”, what is it you actually want and/or consider Endgame?
TLDR, like most of your posts, I don’t bother reading.
For a game you buy once and never have to pay again, unless you value your time enough to spend real money, this game is beyond brilliant. The amount of work the A-Net team does on a daily basis to give FOR FREE to players is astounding.
The amount of hate and vitriol I see on these forums by sad cases that just wanted GW1 with better graphics just saddens me.
The game has changed, and as any living world it should change, all the time.
As of yet, there are no “raids”, organized, instanced group content for 8+ players, until that happens the zerg is the only thing that the players who have been trained by other MMO’s, have to do. It makes sense to them and, as they are a large part of the players currently, it is something A-Net has to address, IMHO
Personally I like the constant stream of content, but if I am sidetracked leveling an alt or doing WvW, I don’t feel that bad about missing out. What did I lose really? A Weapon skin everyone else has, some gold, an achievement or two, five, twelve? Two weeks later it will be back so no big deal really. IMHO
Bundaberg OP rum… now that was good stuff, used to live in OZ a decade or so ago
I feel your pain, however with such an emphasis placed on spell and weapon effects, it is very hard to optimize for all but the best gaming rigs. If we all played on super LEET puters it wouldn’t be a problem but most people are still running Windows XP. No real data to back that up save an episode of Monty’s Minute on GamebreakerTV where he (Monty, a game dev) explained the reasoning why most games are based around lower OS. Upgrading a PC is a low priority for most homes.
It’s a tough situation for A-Net… and us.
I thought, and correct me if I’m wrong, that the whole purpose of an Alt is to have something to do when not playing your Main. Why is content then such a bad thing?
Yes, I am not an idiot, I understand that some folks want a ton of ready-playable toons for any and every occasion but shouldn’t the price for that kind of versatility be a long road?
For now, just join the farming train in the Queens Pavilion. Drops way more loot with the 150% MF buff than farming CoF1 before patch. T6 mats,Rares and Exotics drop like candy during carnival and the experience is insane for lvling. I know people gaining 40+ lvls there on alts in a day.
^ This.
I agree, this should be an option. The “Guild Rename Contract” seems viable.
Whats funny is the word “Manifesto”. I have been involved in many companies doing start-ups and a manifesto is a good starting point, having said that, in the real world, things like manifestos and Business Plans change by necessity. The fact that so many, especially GW1 players, are clinging to an introductory set of words seems a trifle strange.
To be fair, it was a very well done video that called to the heart of what people like me hated about MMOs. And I really think Anet believed when they wrote it they could completely change the landscape. But they didn’t count on player reaction to what they were doing.
So they open the game, thinking everyone will be fine with purely cosmetic rewards…but that wasn’t the case. Most people weren’t fine with it…though the GW 1 fans certainly were.
So Anet made a compromise..that being ascended gear. They’ve said that ascended gear was always supposed to be in the game, and maybe that’s a bit of spin. I suspect that it was supposed to be in the game, but not in its current form. We’ll never know for sure.
But we do know that Anet had hard data about how many people maxed out their gear and left. They made decisions based on this as any company would. It definitely represented a change in direction. It definitely doesn’t mean the manifesto was a lie. Most of it is still completely true…if misunderstood.
I feel it has been “adjusted” to meet the needs of the player base that they have data on that we can’t even begin to imagine.
Ascended gear had a rocky start but seems to have leveled out since there are other ways to obtain it apart from fractals, everyone is happy, well not everyone…
A-Net made a AAA title with their own engine (not a cheap undertaking), they had to appeal to a wider audience than just GW1 players, though they are trying. I feel they have made some mistakes but nobody, and I mean NOBODY, tries to appease the playerbase like A-Net.
The Manifesto is, as you say, a well done video and it has appealed to many and largely remains true to form, but cannot be taken as canon 3 years after the fact.
jmho
First off, no rage and vitriol here. Just disappointment.
The years-long love affair with Guild Wars. We’ve awakened to find a different company, and have been hoping to voice our opinions, be heard, and maybe see ArenaNet move back towards what they used to be.
We’re slowly giving up on it, now, though. I think you’ll find that posts from people like us are becoming fewer and fewer as we log in less and less. What I posted up there was pretty much my “I give up” statement, I suppose.
I had years of fun with ArenaNet. I’m saddened that it’s probably time to move on, but I guess nothing lasts forever.
I can understand this. Breaking up is hard, so to speak. Thank you for the insight, sincerely.
This has truly been the very most entertaining thread on these forums.
My two cents:
1) I cannot fathom why someone (I won’t name names but I bet you could guess who in one try) would work so hard to defend a company that’s not paying them to do so. So either they’re getting paid under the table to be that “voice of reason”, or they’re a bit weirdly obsessive over the game. Basically, something going on is either a little creepy, or a lot dishonest. Either way, I’m inclined to gently disregard much of what that person says.
2) You can lawyer the nitnoid details of the Manifesto all you want. It’s pretty kitten clear that many, many, many people read that thing and interpreted it to mean something very different from what we got in GW2. To me, a Manifesto is the source document, and after-the-fact interviews with the people involved saying “well, what we really meant was…..” do not qualify as meaningful in this context. See below.
3) Add what I said above to the fact that ArenaNet have been hyping the hell out of each new content release since launch, and overall the quality has been very disappointing. The stories (which are improving lately, I’ll concede) have been pretty “meh” and the content itself just mindless, repetitive collecting X number of widgets or doing the same dungeon or game over and over and over for some achievement.
What this adds up to is the feeling that all the Manifesto ever was is hype. That, or something happened at ArenaNet since it came out, and they changed direction, and are trying to pretend that they didnt.
4) Moreover, the 180 degree shift they did in November by adding Ascended gear was a bad decision, but even worse was them saying “they intended it all along” – as if we were all supposed to think that we just missed that somewhere. If anyone can find a reference to adding gear tiers, Ascended gear, or anything similar prior to that initial announcement in late October/early November, I’d be curious to see it. I haven’t found any such thing.
So when you put that together with the other things I mentions, I look at the result and start to feel like I’m being taken for a ride here. I get the feeling that this is a company that will say whatever it thinks it needs to in order to try and convince customers to keep buying the product, and will backpedal when called on it and try to explain that “that’s not what we meant”. Then they’ll make comments about how players “come after us with torches and pitchforks” (look elsewhere in the forums – a Dev said this, and I cbf dealing with the poor search function here) when said players try and get them to either clarify, or simply call them on not doing what they said.
So yea. Why all the time and effort defending the thing? Maybe you like the game, and that’s fine, but it’s simply not the game described in the Manifesto – and never will be. ArenaNet have made what they’ve made, and no doubt are rolling in money now, but they’ve lost most of my respect as a company that strives for quality, and one that mans what it says. I don’t believe them any more – they’ve over-hyped and under-delivered far too often, and then tried to explain everything away. I don’t feel that they have an interest in being up front with their players, nor in putting any more effort than necessary into quality – just enough to keep a few big spenders in the gem store.
To me, ArenaNet was that special company that was willing to be different and innovative, and most especially, imaginative. To me, they’re no different than any other studio now. So I treat this game the same as any other now. I log on occasionally, putz around, maybe do something if a friend is on, and log off. There’s no way it’s come anywhere near capturing my imagination like Guild Wars did.
It could have – but I don’t trust this company any more. Enjoy your gear grind. I just don’t see the point in it.
Edit: typo
So why, on Earth, are you still? So much hate, one would think you would find somewhere that makes you happy?
Please explain to me why you, and several others still haunt these forums with rage and vitriol even though you have said time and again you have left the game?
I really want to understand, not trolling.
The achievement for killing, yet again, Aetherblade pirates says “This is all just a bit too coincidental. Someone must be pulling the strings.” I bet, I could be wrong, the string puller is, in fact, an Aetherlbade pirate.
Still laughing 5 minutes later
I love them.
They did start off a little slow but I think that was A-Net testing the waters and getting their ducks in a row, so to speak.
I thoroughly enjoy having new stuff, however small, to do every few weeks. Name another MMO that does this.
The real issue here is those that choose to define grind by it’s “modern” definition as opposed to its original definition
Are we now supposed to believe that the dev was referring to crushing or pulverizing ?
No, but since there’s zero in the manifesto to say he was talking about gear grind, I don’t know why anyone would choose to believe that’s the case. There’s simply nothing in the language to support that conclusion.
From the:
“Guild Wars 2 Design Manifesto
by Mike O’Brien on April 27, 2010It all gets back to our basic design philosophy. Our games aren’t about preparing to have fun, or about grinding for a future fun reward. Our games are designed to be fun from moment to moment.
- Mike O’Brien"
So, what future fun reward is this referring to? The optional rewards like titles and achievements all required a ton of grind in GW. Most of the unique skins were gated behind RNG so severe that most people who tried to farm them devised solo farming builds to remove the chances someone else might get the drop. The only exception came with the chests implemented in EotN and added to UW and FoW, and those were still low chance RNG. Mini-pets? Those were time gated in GW. By extension, one can infer that “our games aren’t about grinding for a future fun reward” cannot be referring to any of the above.
What do other games offer as fun rewards that people grind for? What are people going to think of when they read this paragraph? What could he be referring to if it’s not better gear?
I think, and I may be wrong, but that A-Net is trying to design their game around the actual experience of the game to get to the reward. The problem, inherently is that most MMO players have been trained that the reward, and only the reward, is what’s important, and the best way to get said reward is by the fastest most efficient means possible.
jmho.
Not quite… I’ve seen a lot of support thrown around in the pavilion on the harder fights. You can see the zerk builds because they’re usually lying there dead, but smart players are stacking on aoe heals and running helpful signets and things. I don’t know, maybe it’s just my perspective coming out of wvw.
^ This.
I joined this game on day 3 with a bunch of friends from another MMO that will remain nameless cough pandas cough. My friends were all “content locusts” and blew to max level as fast as possible, couldn’t handle the lack of trinity and quit in a sad confused state.
I took forever to level and find the class that I liked the best. I enjoyed every aspect of the journey to max level, even the last fight (it was story mode guys, give it a rest). As a result, I met many friendly fun and helpful people along the way and found a good guild that is active. I am still here and loving this game.
What happened to my friends you ask? They are playing with pandas and talking about whatever flavor of the month new MMO is soon to be released. Yup, Wildstar and EQNext is gonna be the kitten… sigh
Advice is the worst Vice, but mine is; Enjoy the ride.
They should definitely do more to make support/control roles viable. That I agree with 100%.
I agree. There doesn’t need to be a “Trinity” per se, but more love for support classes would broaden the game significantly Imo.
It’s all who you run with, I have 2 friends, Guardian and Mesmer, wouldn’t leave home without them.
I am loving and appreciating the Living Story, but I would definitely pay for an Xpac right about now.
Same thing for me
Aaaannnndddd thanks to this specific argument, there are now many people that know what the word “Manifesto” means.
The only Complainers are GW1 people who wanted a new improved GW1. Those and WoW players who want vertical progression. Yup, that’s about it.
So many negative posts I see on these forums are from people trying to play an MMORPG as a single player RPG. The whole magic of an MMO is doing it with friends, trust me if you have a group of people who want to do content it makes it better all around. If you are having problems with the basics of this game find a guild, interact, enjoy. That is what it is all about.
Just sayin.
