Guild Wars 2

…and i don’t know what to do with them. Should i save them for later? Can i still do something with them?

They are from the living story parts that are no longer actual. Or maybe some are. Idk…

So i have:

Mystical cogs,
Toy soldier frame,
Baubles,
Bauble bubbles,
Princess Mya’s wig,
Queen’s gauntlet entrance tickets,
and maybe one or two more items that might be from the story mode, idk…

Do i need to save them, can i still use them for anything or do i just destroy them
Also, if i should destroy the, why are they not destroyed when the event ended? Maybe they’ll be needed again?

The baubles are from that 8 bit dungeon thing, and idk if that’s still active, i’ll have to go to Rata Sum and check it out (yeah, lazy).
But i don’t know about the other stuff either…

I play Mesmer… Other people play ranger or warrior or necromancer or whatever…

Fun is very subjective. I doubt anyone on the forum can answer that question for you.

The beauty of this game for me is the exploring feel of it. And you level up by just that, exploring the world. You get XP for everything! Killing mobs, gathering resources, discovering new areas, points of interest, events that you stumble upon, story…

The story alone won’t get you high enough to just plow through it. I think it’s intentionally so. So you don’t breeze through the story and miss half of the game.
Just go somewhere and explore, you’ll be 22+ or higher in no time. Visit other starting areas, go to areas above your level, anything really…

The “quests” in any traditional way are the hearts on the map. The “story quests” are just your instanced personal version of the GW2 overall story..

Also there’s world events… Just play and you’ll get there.
There are some pretty interesting moments to be had while exploring.

Yeah, Mesmers are the signature unique profession in Guild Wars 2 but aren’t actually mainstream as statistics show (See screenshot). I would suggest just playing all the professions you are interested in until about level 20 and try out all the weapons they use to get a good feel of what they’re like to play and go from there.

The other link shows the database i guess, and you can filter it by prfession, gender etc, and mesmers are still at the bottom. And that’s across all characters all players have…

Of course it could be wrong or whatever, but for the sake of the argument, and since that’s the only insight we could have into character classes, we’ll just go along with it.

Also, the one that’s nicely made, “a year in GW2” is officially from ArenaNet i think. I vaguely remember them posting it on facebook or something…

Hmm, i’m using Ubuntu now. I’ve always had issues with openSUSE for some reason. The last thing it did is started to lag graphically on videos desktop and such, and later crashed and wouldn’t boot anymore. I have no idea why.

Seems my computer will accept only select few OS’…
Ubuntu works great, Windows is ok too, SUSE is unstable and Mint crashed my computer during an installation 3 times which in turn messed up booting and windows died with the crash too… :/ Arch wouldn’t even start the installation. :P

So yeah, Ubuntu… It’s not like i have a choice. :P Hahaha.

Wine especially behaves weird on Suse. It shouldn’t, but id does on my computer for some reason. IDK…

Anyway. Post here if you manage to get it running (you will, it works), but running at an ok FPS…

For now, everywhere i look on the net, people are saying it’s because wine uses only 1 core, and untill multi threading is added to wine, low fps with GW2 can’t be helped.

The only people who manage to run it at a somewhat playable level are the ones with some really heavy hardware. And even they report that they loose about 15 fps compared to running it on windows.

Well, one can hope for a native client, but somehow i doubt that’s gonna happen.

I’m not new. Had this game for about a year now, with active/inactive periods, and when i’m active i just play for fun, i don’t hardcore much (although i did on occasion).

But yeah, i forgot that orange weapons are exotic. Rare is yellow.

So sell it then huh? Might as well. I’m aiming for other stats on my weapons and armor, so i’ll end up using something else sooner or later, and after i soulbind it, i won’t get as much gold from it, selling it to the vendor.

I’m a Mesmer and i like staffs, so is this one worth soulbinding or should i just sell it.
It goes for like 2 gold so idk…

I know i’m supposed to go for the berserker gear, but this one has way more base damage than my current weapons (Sword/Focus, Greatsword), and it’s stronger than my previous T3 cultural staff…

Maybe it’s Windows 8? Regardless of how you other games perform on it.
This game came out before that and it might not be “supported” yet.
It would probably help if you could try this game on Windows 7, but i know you probably won’t reinstall everything on your computer to try that.

What is your FPS ingame? You didn’t post that.
But it just might be the game itself. I noticed this in any MMO, regardless how undemanding it was. The crowded areas take a toll on your FPS. This has more to do with your internet connection and less with your GPU. I know, your internet connection works fine, but you can’t compare web browsing with an MMO.

Your rig is certainly impressive, but more often than not, it’s the newest hardware like yours that tends to cause problems. Tweak the settings a bit in the nVidia control panel and see what works best.

Are the crowded areas laggier than the other maps or is the lag constant?

EDIT: Try to limit the number of cores GW2 cliend is allowed to use. It could help, and it certainly doesn’t need all 8 of them.

I don’t get why everyone in the games industry is ignoring linux.
Especially now that everyone wants in on the Android games market.

Project shield uses Android and it’s their next bext gaming thing. They sell GPU’s for mobile phones and tablets that run android. And what drivers do we get for linux desktops? Some half-written mostly buggy drivers that lack key features the same windows drivers have. WTF?

Newsflash – Android is linux based. So it’s very hypocritical of the developers to go out of their way to make games and ports for android and ignore desktop linux distributions completely.

I know desktop users mostly use windows, and linux is not that popular, but with the system getting better and better, more and more people are using it.
Moreover, linux fans that want to play games, but also the ones who just want to support the OS and the developers, are practically throwing their money at any developer that promises to do a linux native game. Just check out kickstarter. If they say there’s going to be a linux option, they’re swimming in cash by the end of the day, let alone month.

Linux users want to play games. Wine is not a solution, it’s complicated for casual users and doesn’t run anything very well compared to a native program written for that OS.

I applaud Steam for having the guts to go to linux. And so far it’s working for them.
If there ever was a time that making a native linux game was a good move, it’s now.
A Guild Wars 2 native client would be a huge success and, although i’m no programmer, i can’t think of any reasons why it’s so hard to assign a team to develop a linux client.

I mean, it’s an MMO, most of the game is on the server, the client is just a means to interface with the server.

And the server is probably running Linux… :P

Since i started playing dungeons, all i ever do is run to the boss…
It’s ok, and i get why people do it.
Playing one, 1 hour dungeon for 20 of something that you need 3000 of is not fun.
I’d like to actually play the whole dungeon every now and then… Just for fun, but speedruns are more efficient.

Yes, if you die, you have to run back throught the mobs, but that’s not really that much of a problem most of the times. Also, you can’t respawn if others are in combat which is 90% of the time, so you have to wait. That encourages resurrecting others and playing with skill. Also, some cash shop items. :P

Also, enemies in dungeons go dive loot (if i’m not mistaken). It’s just that they’re really hard and not worth the effort most of the times.

All in all, dingeons are the way they are, probably for a reason.
It gives you options.

Bash everyone / run to the boss / do things that interest you and bypass the rest…

It all comes down to finding a group of people that want to do what you want. And there’s a nifty new LFG option that allows you to do just that.

Also, OP, i don’t know who you played with, but i never got kicked out of a dungeon for being a newb or dying. o.O You just wait it out, join them later, whatever, no one cares. Of course there are some HC players out there that would do that but those usually form their own guild parties and don’t invite random people.

So, i was doing the Citadel of Flame, everything went perfect, but i had a minor mishap at the boss and died while it was near death.

Of course no one ressed me so i waited for the others to kill it, a waypoint appears, i respawn right there aaaanddd……….

I did get the standard, instant loot with carvings, but there were 2 chests with loot that i didn’t get because someone was in a hurry or something…

Why is that even possible? Am i missing something?

I’ll tell you that pretty much every player could be happy with pretty much every profession. in my opinion, they all are 9+/10. it all just depends on your play style, which pretty much every profession can accommodate to.

Hi Veprovina. There is actually a separate Mac client that can be downloaded from the site and used without Wine. I know that doesn’t answer your question concerning Linux.

I should point out that ANet does not support GW2 on the Linux OS. It’s possible that fellow players might be able to help you with settings for optimal performance, but from what I’ve read in the past low FPS should be expected.

I know it’s not supported, i just don’t want to switch to windows every time i want to play it since i’m mostly on Ubuntu for everyday stuff like surfing and whatever.
Anyway, all i’m asking is if someone found that optimal settings. For now, every guide i looked at didn’t yield any promising results. Maybe i missed something, idk.

I’ll play with it some more, see what i can do, but if anyone has GW2 running at some good FPS i’d be happy if they can share what settings or wine version or whatever they’re using.

Yes, i know it’s possible, i can actually run it and play, it’s just that the FPS is horrible. Right now, for that reason i’m playing it on Windows (as it’s meant to be played, lol), but if i can fiddle with some settings to make it more smooth on linux that would be perfect!

I did look at that guide and it helped me install and run it. I just don’t know how to fine tune it to run better, that’s all…

Mesmer’s mobility problem is that it doesn’t have a permanent or semi-permanent speed boost for faster travel. However, it’s got great combat mobility. And it is mainstream.

Oh that’s what you meant. Yeah, outside of combat, there’s only focus skill “temporal curtain”. And it doesn’t last long.
And there’s a signet that grants random boons, but that’s not really helping to hasten up. :P

Yes, in order to play it on linux or mac, Guild Wars 2 needs to run through wine. So they are simmilar. You still get more FPS than i do, i get like 5-10 max.

I managed to get it to install, and i’m able to play, but the graphical lag is horrible and unplayable so for now i play it in windows.

I hear it has something to do with wine not being able to run guild wars 2 on more than 1 processor, but i don’t know…

I installed it trough PlayOnLinux, and it runs on wine 1.5.28 (or something like that).

Geforce 9600 GT 512 MB
8 GB RAM

I know the graphic card is old, but it runs fine in windows, so there’s got to be some trick to make it run just as good on linux. I know that it needs more resources to run windows games on linux but if i play it in windows on high, i should be at least able to play it on medium in linux.

So. Anyone playing GW2 on linux and not getting low FPS on lowest settings? :P

Mesmers really aren’t mainstream… And they don’t have bad mobility. You can teleport around the battlefield, teleport away, go invisible, get haste… It’s really neat.
And if you want to be a minority make a Charr Mesmer. :P There’s only like 5 anywhere. (probably more, but yeah. really rare).

And as you were already advised:
Make a few characters. Play with them a bit and see what you like.

I have a lvl 20 Engineer that i stopped playing because i didn’t like it much so i made a Mesmer that is now 80 with all skills unlocked. Now i’m grinding dungeons for gear. I have a warrior that i play when i’m bored with the Mesmer and a thief because i just wanted to see how that is. And a necromancer. but i’m not sure what to make of it.

But that’s just me. The best way to decide (and the way i decided) was to try the classes out and see what you like.

It’s really easy to get to level 80 so you should be able to maybe level multiple characters.

Can someone recommend a build that’s good in dungeons and PvE in general?
I’ve been browsing some builds but i can’t decide which one would suit me best.

Maybe something with more survivability than i have now. I keep dying a lot in dungeons as my vitality is low.

I use Staff and Sword/Focus-Pistol. I’ts ok, but i’m not sure what traits i picked and it’s been a while since i played. I just know that Inspiration (that gives Vitality) is at 0 and it’s bugging me in dungeons. Someone bigger coughs my way and i’m down. :/

I want the CoF armor so i’m looking for a bit tougher build that can also get some damage done.

Also, what weapons should i use? Now i’m using T3 Charr cultural weapon and some bought sword and focus/pistol. Should i maybe invest in some Asura cultural weapons (they have vitality) or go full crit?

I’m confused… Is it better to pump up my vitality or just pump up my damage/crit/conditions? And what build and weapons should i use for that?

So i need a more permanent build since this will dictate what weapons i buy.

Please help.

Well, this one apparently succeeded, as you can tell from the screenshot. :P
I haven’t tried it again, don’t really care if it happens again, i just wanted to post this, so maybe they’ll fix it.

I don’t know if it works for any item, but, while i was wearing my mask, i transmuted another item to look like the mask using transmutation stones… Then the thing in the attachment happened… It appeared as if i was wearing both that other helmet type, and my mask helmet type… Kinda cool and unique!

It returned to normal once i changed maps (after a loading screen), so idk if this is a game glitch, or something to do with my graphic card, although i doubt it’s the latter.

I run the game on medium settings…

So if i want to play the story mode, i need to go first? What’s the difference then?

I’ve been trying to find this info on the net, but all the wiki guides don’t explain it much, or i just didn’t find one that does.

I’ve done exploration mode dungeons, but i can’t find how to do story mode dungeons… What are the requirements, is it a quest, where do i get it, what to do then?
Also, what’s different then? Are there different rewards for finishing it?

When i open the TP the font looks weird and broken. It’s really difficult to read.
Other game fonts look normal. Here’s a screenshot for comparison.

Is this a bug in the game or is it something on my end?
Everything else besides the font in trading post window is normal.

Hey! Thanks for the tips. I tend to lean more towards nVidia because AMD tends to have buggy drivers a bit, and some programs i use can directly use CUDA technology, but that radeon seems pretty sweet… :P

I have an AMD Phenom II with 8 GB ram and a GeForce 9600 GT 512 MB…
Sadly, the GFX card is the bottleneck in the system and Guild Wars 2 runs kinda bad. Runs fine on lowest settings, but it looks ugly as kittens (kittens everywhere!!! :P ).

Anyway… Can someone recommend the cheapest Gfx card that can run Guild Wars 2 in 1920×1080 resolution? Nothing fancy, but just so i can get smooth FPS on highest settings…

Sorry, I don’t understand the problem with dodging. You don’t have to go here or there to get it done. It doesn’t discriminate against classes. If you are playing the game, you are getting the dodging daily done. If you aren’t, well then you may be surviving in solo PvE, but I certainly don’t want to run a dungeon with you.

It does discriminate against slower internet connections. I never said it discriminates against classes or races or whatever…

If you lag too much to dodge, you lag too much to play. I"m playing in Tasmania, and have as much latency as most people and it takes me five minutes to get my dodge.

If you’re really having problems, go to Wayfarer foothills, find a 3rd level grawl that shoots the bow. They’re very easy to dodge, latency at all.

This isn’t an Arena net problem, this is a problem with someone who has a connection that doesn’t support the game. Why blame Anet for your hardware and internet connection?

If your lag is that bad the game would be unplayable.

Is should be reworded to say “Evade” so that people can learn the difference but then you’d have a bunch of threads complaining that someone doesn’t know how to evade.

FYI: The physical act of dodging only counts if you evade the attack. If you’re just jumping out of the way before an attack even comes then you’re not evading, therefore you’re not really dodging.

Actually everything else is fine, but dodging is not. I know how to dodge, and what “evaded” means, but if i miss by 1 milisecond of what i think is the mobs attack and it turns out just the animation was like that, but the attack came 1 milisecond sooner or later, the dodge doesn’t register, even if my character does the dodge animation… And i’m not blaming ArenaNet for my lag. I’m not blaming them for anything really. I just think daily dodger is a dumb idea, and i’m not the only one. When i’ll be able to pick my dailys, i’ll be happy. Now, i didn’t complete the daily once since this got in. Before, i did it every time…

Also, as a lot of people pointed out, the new system is a grind. The system before was done automatically as you play. Now you need to change map 30 times to get whatever you need for the daily…

Also, to other peoples suggesting how to dodge, where to go and all… Those are good advices and suggestions, sure, but that’s not the point. The point is it doesn’t come naturally to some classes, and slow internet connection messes with it. It doesn’t even need to be that slow really… It’s messy and i don’t like it, and neither do a lot of people… Especially more casual players like me. If i wanted to grind my kitten off, i’d play World of Warcraft or Dekaron or something that requires you to kill 100 of something to do the quest, then you have to return to the npc who gave you that to complete it.

The whole appeal of GW2 is the opposite of that, just traveling the world, not needing the constant map changes, returning to somewhere just to do 1 tiny thing and grinding…

Veprovina, since your main is a Mesmer doing the dodge daily is fairly simple to do for you (you don’t even need to actually “dodge” for it). As a Mesmer if you do the basic melee underwater attack with a spear you will auto-evade with every 3rd attack. So as long as you get your attack sequence in sync with the aquatic enemies attacks you can complete this daily fairly easily. Oh did I forget to mention that its while killing aquatic enemies so if the aquatic slayer daily is up too you will be knocking out 2 dailies at once.

Yeah, but what if i’m nowhere near water? Happens a lot. :P I don’t like to change maps and waste my money, just so i can do a daily or 1 thing. I stay on the map untill i complete it, usually. But for the time being, i’ll try it out, as well as other peoples advice.

Oh well i’ll wait for when they enable us to choose our daily achievements…

I mostly rant about dodging since it’s based on how good your connection is and not how you play the game. I spent almost 2 hours dodging and it registered twice. Sometimes i didn’t even get hit, but it didn’t even register as a dodge. :/

Crafting is not my thing but if there’s only one tier of quests like IndigoSundown.5419 pointed out, then it’s fine too, and doable… I thought there are multiple tiers still and that i have to craft a kittenload of items to get the achievement.

It’s funny. I once read the statement from ArenaNet about 3rd party programs being allowed if they don’t give players advantage over others…

Then they do this thing with the dodging… And now some players clearly have an advantage over others… Oh the irony… :P

I just got back from a small pause and i don’t really like the new daily quest thing…

Dodge? Really??? And it starts at 15!!! How many total do i have to dodge? I mean, i get that it’s kind of a big part of the gameplay, but not everyone has the ultra fast internet connection the rest of the word is apparently having to justify this…

Today i spent almost 2 hours dodging and doing normal stuff (events that involve combat) with the emphasis on dodging, then got 2 dodges registered for my effort… Yay! Good one ArenaNet, good one! Now dodge seems more broken than it did before. Or is it just me and my internet connection.

Also, crafting… How many items a day do i have to craft to get this? It starts with 10. I hope it doesn’t end with 60 or something. Do i have to hardcore 16 hours a day just to get the materials required to craft every day? Also, craft useless items i won’t use and wont get experience for just for the sake of a daily quest…

Events…. Cool, i get it, a big part of gameplay and they entice you to participate in the this way for more rewards… I would hate it if they removed it and they didn’t. That’s good.

Reviving… Fine… A bit stretched, but doable. Works on NPC’s as i hear so it’s ok. There’s a lot of areas where NPC’s just die over and over again so it’s fine.

Kills/Aquatic kills… I kinda like that one. Aquatic combat is a core part of the gameplay and now there’s even rewards for doing it…

Veteran slayer… Meh…. Fine too… Lot of them around so it’s ok and it’s not connection dependant like dodging… Ugh…

Laurel merchant… Also fine. The new thing they put in the game had to be incorporated somehow, so why not. If it works just by browsing the merchants wares then it’s ok…

It’s kind of cool how achievements vary depending on what day it is…

But dodging and crafting? Wtf?

Is this going to turn into the game for hardcore players only? I have stuff to do and can’t play the game all day just to get the daily. Before i could complete the daily quest in 2-5 hours depending on where i was i what i was doing, but it flowed with the normal gameplay really nice, and only required a bit of “tuning” to complete all the quests…

Now what am i supposed to do? Dodge all day with my crappy internet connection?
I feel kinda left out since i’m neither in a place where you can get a good internet connection, nor am i a hardcore player. I want to be, but there’s not enough hours in a day for that sadly.

Do i at least get more karma for the effort and better rewards than before?

Anyone else has a problem with the new daily achievement system? Cause i can see where this is going and i don’t really like it.

If they put something that isn’t lag dependant it would be fine, i wouldn’t even think about daily crafting, but dodging…

Sorry about the rant but mandatory dodging in my opinion is the dumbest idea they could come up with. Everyone knows internet connection is a big modifier of an MMO experience, and now they’re just alienating players with slower internet connections or the ones farther from the server.

I’ll never save enough karma for the stuff i want now…

Sorry for the rant… But i want to hear peoples opinions on this.

The only reason I and a lot of other players picked up Guild Wars 2 is because it doesn’t have monthly subscription fees. That’s the dumbest thing any game could have and if Guild Wars 2 puts that in, i’m out… /thread and stop putting ideas into ArenaNet’s head… :P

Unfortunately, I don’t know for certain. I believe that the recipes are still valid (it’s still possible to create some of the Halloween skins like the Mad Moon and Arachnophobia in the MF, for example), but I don’t have a conclusive answer.

If you have the bank space to spare, I’d suggest holding onto the Mystical Cogs till next Wintersday. Odds are high that Tixx will be back again, and the extra Cogs may mean you’re able to craft the Toys that you weren’t able to get this year.

Well that’s what i was thinking… I can’t sell them to an npc for much, and i can still buy other components to make my toy soldier…

Can i do that? Does the recepie still work? Or am i too late? I want to know before i buy other components, so that i don’t get any more useless items in my inventory… :P

They are being manipulated right now, so it’s iffy.

Most people, I think, focus on getting armor first, then they start to focus on weapons.

What do you mean manipulated?
And i’ve got my eyes on lvl 80 Asura cultural weapons, i thought they’d be a good starting point and they look nice. They’ll go great with my mesmer! :P Later i thought i’d transmute better weapons to look like those if that’s at all possible. Plus, they don’t cost money, so i can just buy them for karma…

TIP: Use those karma jugs when u have a Guild Karma banner buff, Karma Booster, and Ice Cream Food to get the most karma outta the jugs.

In the long run, take up crafting…good xp and eventually you’ll be able to make that 20 g item you are seeing on the TP for 2-3 gold in mats.

That’s what i was thinking too… I leveled 2 levels today just by crafting. Still need to boost it a lot to get any decent items out of it. Whatever i make i can’t even sell on TP, won’t go that low lol… :P

Where can i get recipes for my particular set of crafting skills? Artificer and Tailoring?

Also, obviously what i’m doing now (mainly, roaming the maps and doing hearts and sometimes story) isn’t really working money wise. Any advice on that to do? How to proceed? I’m level 60 now, it’s fast to level in this game, so i’ll be 80 in no time, i really need some armor lol, this one is lvl 40 armor, and it’s really starting to get harder… Except maybe lvl 1 maps i do for world completion, but still…

well i have one frame but no wads or stuffing… where can i buy that? at least i’ll have a mini then if the recepies still work… and i have 350 cogs i think…

also, how much does that cost?

Can i still use them or can i just npc them. They’re taking my inventory space and i can’t sell them otherwise? They were from the wintersday event and i have no idea what they’re for…

Yes, i was looking at legendaries. Does anyone buy those at all or can i make them myself? And i have a bit of karma saved up, and some unused karma jugs too. But one weapon costs about 69000 karma. :P Will i have enough karma by the level 80 to buy them? At least 3 of them, for the set i’m using… Seems like a lot.

I saw those armors in Lion’s Arch, and weapons… Are they any good? I mean, they’re better than what i have for sure. :P

Anyway, what you’re saying is, i don’t need much gold at all to get good gear?

Hey all!

I’m really poor right now in the game, so i was wondering, what are a few tricks to get some money fast. I’ve been saving up for some gear, but now i’m 2 levels from 60, then i have to buy a book, so that’s 2 gold down the drain, and after that something else will pop up, etc…

I’ll be lvl 80 before i can purchase some decent lvl 60 weapons and armor… I’ve been stuck with my armor for so long, i need some change. :P

And looking at some prices for lvl 80 weapons… How the hell do i get so much gold??? I don’t know if it’s around 2000 or 200 gp per weapon, but kitten i barely got 4 gp and some silver on me. Or are those prices a bit exaggerated?
