Well didn’t they pretty much kill Hot Join when they got rid of the Practice button?
That’s probably why.
ermahgerd why aren’t you banned for throwing games in legendary?1!! one1!!
Again, I absolutely cannot wait for this to happen. I really look forward to seeing what excuses people will come up with then!
I support this just because I want to see what excuses people will come up with next.
the actual solution is to focus on making pvp fun, then worry about mmr and esports
if u make things fun, people will come, then you can try to worry about mmr and esports
You keep using the words MMR and esports, but I don’t think you quite understand what they mean.
Better balance would make the combat more fun, but better balance won’t make matchups more fun.
i think u misunderstand.
focus on making the game fun, then focus on matchmaking, then focus on esports.
when the game is fun, people will play it. when more people play it, u will reduce the q time and have a bigger pool of people to make matches for. when u have a bigger pool of people making matches you will have add’l good people playing, when you have add’l good people playing you will have more exciting and diverse games (not the same ~20 people playing each other for $$), once the games are more exciting and diverse you can focus on esports
That makes sense and that’s something I agree with.
Unfortunately the team that works on class balance/new maps/“fun” is not the team that works with PvP matchmaking and league design.
“Fun” is not going to happen for the next 6 months. Matchmaking changes will.

Yes, but division crossings are required for the shiny. So, preventing crossings counters the value of the shiny.
On the contrary, that would actually increase the value of the shiny. Less people able to obtain it, higher prestige value.
In addition there have been avalanches of complaints that fellow players are too weak and opposition players too strong.
ANET was clearly trying to get a separation so that super teams didn’t go around noob stomping/farming for fun.
You speak with such authority. Proof please?
Safe pips are the crutch that was meant to counterbalance uneven matches and speed players apart. Unfortunately, that’s been circumvented by two things; The matchmaking is creating matches so extreme that the separation never happens and people are subverting the system by re rolling to new accounts.
Again, proof. And really, how many people are going around buying $50 accounts to redo the very fun and thrilling leagues? And if you’re being stomped by a bunch of F2P core accounts with unviable builds, then that’s just sad.
Intuition says that with current matchmaking, the vast majority would be in Amber/Emerald.
So? What’s wrong with that? 80% of the LoL playerbase in Bronze and Silver anyways with the rest spread out to Gold, Plat, Diamond and the top 50 in Challenger. People aren’t supposed to congregate in mid tier anyways.
It’s okay when you have big enough population that even that remaining 20% spread out among all the other divisions still means that each division is highly populated.
This is not the situation in GW2.
It’ll work itself out naturally. Top players wouldn’t be able to move past something like Ruby rank due to lack of player population to que with. That would mean Ruby therefore becomes the highest skilled “division” until players manage to distribute themselves out further.
If players find that an issue, then the easiest solution is to either expand the matchmaking ranges, or make divisions solely based on MMR.

Thought it was +/- 15 of your whole team?
So you guys were 5v3 since 2 of the enemy were AFK treb and you still couldn’t win?
#Amberlyfe
Well, as long as this topic is up, I have a legit question.
Very first league match today on Skyhammer, and as soon as our gates opened the entire enemy team was standing at the bottom (of our spawn) waiting for us, and within less than 3 seconds had capped all 3 points despite all 5 of them being at our spawn. Needless to say, it was a slaughter.
I have encountered, in unranked, a couple times where someone from the enemy team beats us to our home point and simply chalked it up to some insane movement ability I don’t understand yet (only 1 80 so far so I don’t know everyone’s abilities). But this was ridiculous. Not sure if it’s a bug/exploit with portals or what, but my entire team cried hax.
Is this something that can be done legitimately, or did I actually encounter some hackers?
There are teleport hacks, but you’re very unlikely to see a whole team do it together. I mean possible, but unlikely.
Are you sure you didn’t queue up for hotjoin/custom arena and end up in a match halfway through and get spawncamped? You can get 10 players per team, so that would explain 5 people spawncamping you while getting capped.
Depending on the map, players can get to your homepoint in time to contest it, but not beat you to it.
But if what happened was what you described exactly, then yes that would be a hack.
If you need to ask a question related to a profession it would probably be wiser to ask in the profession section of the forums, you will most likely be able to ask there without being made fun of and ridiculed, (unless some one is stalking your posts for such intentions, which does happen from time to time in this lovely wonderful pvp community). But yea try the profession section of the forums, they would probably be more helpful and kinder
Thanks Ellie, true, wrong section. In fact, I’m rethinking whether to write anything else around here. I feel I’m just being exposed to be jumped on instead of being helped.
Thanks!
Oh I’m sorry, did you conveniently forget the part where you accused another player of cheating because he used a set of skills you didn’t understand? And then backpeddle by trying to hide your post (and deleting a ton of other incriminating ones in the process) instead of admitting you made a mistake?
The correct response would be "Oh, I’m sorry. You are correct, I made a mistake. The other player was not cheating, and I was misinformed. My lack of understanding of the engineer class (despite it being my “main/favorite”) is probably what’s keeping me down in a lower tier and not bad matchmaking."
Not deleting 20 posts to try and cover up your mistake and pretend it never happened.
And people wonder why they’re stuck in certain tiers…
Edit:
LOLOLOL is this guy for real? He just went back and deleted half his post history to hide all the posts where he claimed he was stuck in a division or lost because of AFK and bad matchmaking.
(edited by Vicky.4563)
Huh. Hey! OP! I know you! You’re on my block list!
Aren’t you that diamond DH that rages at his own teammates and then dies 1v1?
Yeah, I’d go AFK too just to kitten you off some more.
That’s not accurate I just came from a match in which I had 3-4 ambers against a team of rubies. I’m working on a 10 loss streak at the moment, most of them by roflstomp.
Anet expressly stated that the matchmaker is stacking one team stronger than the other.
That’s not fair and it’s producing bad results.
No, that’s not what they said.
season 3 we get both
i.e.red – blue
8 – 8
8 – 9
9 – 8
8 – 9
9 – 8something like that maybe.
otherwise, one team gonna have slightly higher overall MMR.Season 1 would have been closer:
6 – 7
6 – 5
5 – 5
5 – 4
4 – 4Your season 2 example is accurate, though could be closer in some circumstances.
Season 3 will be like a sorted version of season 1:
4 – 5
4 – 5
4 – 6
5 – 6
5 – 7
Also, take screen shots if you are truly getting these matchups. Prove to Anet you’re experiencing a bug in the system then.
Hi guys I took a long break of this game due to the nonbalance and poor matchmaking, my question is: did anet already fixed the game or is it the same kitten game since HoT?
It’s still the same bull. You still get certain annoying players who AFK or ragequit the game before it even starts because they disagree with the team comp and don’t even get banned for it.
Oh wait. I forgot who I was talking to.
You should keep taking that break. Forever.
The wins had everything to do with being duo with someone with a high
ratingskill level. The matchmaker placed me on the winning side.I played with a strong player who could carry. So, I won. That’s my point. The matches are deliberately set for
onethe side with the better players to win. That’snotcompetition.
Something seemed off about your words so I fixed it for you. You’re welcome
Why play in legend?
To play unviable builds and kitten off your poor diamond teammates who are desperately trying to break into legendary.
After all, you can’t lose divisions, so why not?
Enjoy the salt!
Wow, seriously? Have people been spoiled by the carebear PvE so much that they can’t abide kill stealing in PvP?
accept for the fact i have never done PvE…. Nor have a character with more than 5% map comp…. And many people hate the final tick… some like it…. Maybe you shouldnt be a forum warrior
Because if his opinion is different then yours, he is automatically a “forum warrior”?
nah he auto assumed i was PvE and decided to be passive aggressive.
No, I asked a general question. You assumed I was referring to you. Don’t project.
You aren’t the first guy to complain about kill stealing. Though the last guy was a PvEr who still thinks DH are OP.
It is not hard for a halfway decent player to carry in Sapphire. Especially this late in the season when there is no one good left there.
Just 1v2 at far, win it, and the rest of your team zergs down eveyone else. EZ.
Don’t tell me Lettuce had some god level MMR considering he doesn’t PvP outside of WvW and custom arenas.
Must be why I trio q’ed with min and teli to get them from sapphire to legendary at start of season when ESL players were constantly matched with us. I casually Q now after these guys hit leggy because I don’t really care about seasons. And we stopped Q’ing because the Q times are now an hour average. Q times are a turn off now.
There’s no prestige associated with it. I just do scrims with the FEAR team against other teams. I’m at 35 wins out of 38 games atm this season and that’s mostly against ESL players. Hmmm, you seem like someone salty I rekt. Confirm please?
@Ithilwen, you’re welcome. Your ele still could use a lot of work improving but you’re definitely improving. Try to survive more against my rev then we’ll bump up your training to 1 v 2’s on a node.
So you actually played enough to establish a high enough MMR to affect matchmaking.
Shame, I was hoping we’d finally get a story about how it was possible for a mechanically skilled player to carry a team. Looks like it is matchmaking rigging outcomes and player skill has no impact.
Also I don’t know you. But I’ve certainly TRULed in your arena before.
I feel like everyone who makes a posts suggesting balance change or comments on it should post up a video of their game play first.
Just so we can see their understanding of their game of course.
It would save us a lot of time by filtering out suggestions from players with low level understanding on how things work. Or from players who play at the lowest tier and level.

The proof that a superior mechanical player can carry what appears to be a team stuck in MMR hell.
It’s cause some youtuber posted a video about pp thieves. Now we all get to have fun farming them for the next 2 weeks.
I’m confused. The picture you posted before you deleted your post and replaced it was of you in diamond with 400 games and 200 wins. What gives?
Champion Brawler, Challenger of the Arena, Soldier of the Arena, Veteran of the Arena, Master of the Arena, Legend of the Arena.
These are the only titles that means something in PvP.
IDK about you, but I can easily think of one Soldier of the Arena thief that pretty much means a guaranteed loss when I get him.
Wow, seriously? Have people been spoiled by the carebear PvE so much that they can’t abide kill stealing in PvP?
kitten kitten. Don’t hold back. Tell us what you really think.
I guess we’ll see you in a month when your ban ends xD
Awwww, this thread is such an adorable roundabout attempt to get ranger buffs!!
<3 cute
I r8 8/8.
On the contrary, I’m all for competitive play. Where I have issues with the current system for GW2 PvP is in its lack to diversify the PUGs from the PRE-TEAMs. It’s really that straight-forward in my book. GW1 had that right – you had seperation to those two distinctions, and incorporating that into GW2 would alleviate a lot of the current PvP disfunction and imbalances we’re left with – minus any current class OP meta’s, but that’s never going to change as they tweek tweek and tweek.
If you want to change something, you must first understand why it exists in the first place?
We had team and solo queue before. Why did Anet combine the two? Ponder on that.
And assuming we do fully separate the queues, and division locks still exist, there would be 0 difference between those leagues and now. Why? Because a solo player could play all the way up to Legendary/Diamond/Ruby/etc, and the proceed to lose the next 10000000000 matches and still be in their respective leagues.
If that’s not broken, what is?
And really. Legendary is a joke. There is zero prestige in getting it. I’m not sure why you find it so difficult to understand that.
Sounds like great ideas to me, all divisions will then be win a match get a pip, lose a match lose a pip. Can lose tiers and divisions all the way back to 0 pips in Amber. So many problems solved and no need to reset divisions between leagues anymore (some kind of decay for prolonged inactivity would be a good idea).
Actually, if they do as you propose then there no reason not to separate the division system from the league altogether and make it a permanent feature.
They can also steal from LoL and make it so you have some small barrier before dropping division. If you lose 3 matches in a row on your last pip, then you drop down a division. That’s a pretty generous safety net.
And implement a decay system for Legendary and Diamond. Ruby probably isn’t considered competitive enough so that you need a decay for that.
While they’re at it, they can also bring back the public leaderboards instead of that lame legendary leaderboard that you can’t even browse and view games/win rates on.
Other than that I’m trying to think of ways you could abuse it. I suppose if I were a scumbag PvE player who only wants the shinies, they might try to do match manipulation like Red Resign day.
Stomping through on a premade wouldn’t be worth it, because ideally as they win and move up, they’ll eventually hit a skill wall where they’ll stalemate out again at 50/50. And if the primary goal is to get the shiny, then they’ll want to play and win as many games as possible, you might as well solo queue for faster queue times.
And MMR tanking wouldn’t be a thing since there’s no safety net.
The biggest downside would be that it’d be a horrid grind. But aren’t all legendaries grinds anyways?
Vicky, why so much hostility in your post? Let’s not take what I’m saying out of context – if you earn it, you deserve it. I never stated it was a “reward track.” You did, and we both know the difference.
A system that doesn’t penalize losses after a certain point is essentially a reward track.
Again, this game is supposed to be fun to play – not hardcore play 12hrs+ a day or go uninstall it you noob kitten. Whether I win or lose, I want the “best” opportunity for a “fair” match. Not PUG meets PREMADE. But, I digress.
You don’t need a hardcore play 12hrs a day whatever. The best opportunity for fair matches is when people can drop divisions instead of being artificially propped up by a system that doesn’t allow for losses in tiers.
Pugs vs premades are not an issue. Anet metrics themselves state that very few matches are loss to full pugs against full premades. You only remember those matches more because you’re trying to seek an excuse to why you loss. It’s all in your head.
I disagree with you. Defend it? I defend it hours upon hours, and days upon days, at a time. Why? Cause the system, as is, is broken, and time and time again I’m stuck w/ new players, low rated players, and/or PVE-ers who could give 2-cents less in the end. There are several other factors, but the point remains that I shouldn’t have to give back ALL my effort, time, and sweat due to some run of bad luck or other players not playing at the same skill level as me.
That’s great! We agree! The system is broken! Because no tier regression!
Those PvErs who wouldn’t give 2 cents, those low rated players, those AFK players would drop down to a lower division over time. If only we could allow tier regression. Meanwhile players who play to win would rise ahead.
As for what happens when you remove all those factors? I’m fine w/ losing pipes. It keeps things in check. GW2 PvP Dev team already saw to increasing the necessary tiers required to cross into the next Division – making it harder and harder for a casual and/or PvE-er to obtain the coveted “Legendary” status.
What? It’s pathetically easy for anyone to get the legendary status. Make it harder.
Ultimately, what I’m hearing is it sounds like some of the 1% sitting on top of the Ranking just don’t want their efforts diminished by the “casual” player doing the unthinkable – joining in their stature. Is this another social class in the making within a game?
Well, considering it IS a league and ladder, you do know what leagues and ladders mean right? You’re supposed to be divided.
Ultimately, no one cares but you and your own ego. Furthermore, if anyone should defend themselves and all their glory, then let it be those that have hit Legendary. Let them face the chance of losing their coveted title if a new gladiator comes along to knock them off their “throne.”
You sound like you have something against players who want to play a competitive game mode the way it was intended. Each player should be rated and judged within each division. Not just legendary. Currently, there is almost no difference between each division. Amber, Emerald and Sapphire are pretty much one extended division. Ruby through Legendary and pretty much the same too.
Remove the division handicaps. Let players disperse naturally in a curve instead of propping them up. Then we’ll see how matchmaking pans out from there.
Until you remove all these artificial barriers, you will never be able to create a functional matchmaking system.
If I make it to Sapphire, then I earned it. I keep it.
If you make it to Ruby, then you’ve earned it. You keep it.
No, you don’t. You defend it. If you can’t defend it successfully, you don’t deserve to keep it.
It’s supposed to be a ranked league season, not a reward track. Champions have to defend their titles all the time. They can’t just rest on their laurels for the rest of their lives. It’s a constant race and drive to stay on top of your game and improve yourself.
Go play unranked or hot join if you can’t handle it.
Under that new system, you wouldn’t need to move upwards in league anyways to get your wings, so ranks wouldn’t matter for you anyways.
If the design is inherently flawed, nothing you tweak about matchmaking will fix the core problem.
Anet needs to unlink rewards from progression up the ladder, and instead reward players for just participating. That way they can then get rid of the safety barriers so matchmaking can self regulate.
Remove the cross X divisions in season achievements, and change it to more things like “Win X matches on Y map”. Or some other achievement that doesn’t require progression.
Change the way PvP tickets are rewarded so they come from completing achievements or they’re earned by winning each game. So IDK, every 2 games won rewards 1 ticket? Completing the achievement rewards more tickets? Something like that.
Bam. Problem solved. PvErs will still need to play ranked to get the backpiece, but they aren’t forced to progress upwards. They still need to win, but most of the rage from “I’m stick in this division!” should be eliminated because they have no need to move beyond the division they’re supposed to be in.
As long as they win consistently, they will get the rewards.
And then people who actually care about leagues being competitive can still get their badges and titles.
Right now, matchmaking will NEVER be perfect because rewards are locked behind progression. That means every PvE player is out there trying to circumvent matchmaking in order to progress in the leagues. They did this by amber shopping, grinding ridiculous amount of games, anything that lets them move upwards beyond where they’re supposed to be. And safety locks makes it worse so matchmaking can never accurately gauge.
Remove the incentive for them to progress and just simply reward for playing the game /winning. Ideally that means players will settle into one range at a 50/50 win rate and will only move upwards if they improve. And accordingly will drop down if they do poorly.

So you say when i dress and undress shoulders and my armour stat visibly changes it is a hallucination?
Yes.
Compare to mesmer who can pop tp, stealth, condi cleanse, mirror and aegis in 2 clicks aka complete invulnerability.
Wrap it up folks, I think we’ve identified the problem.
amber division, cant lose pips or tiers
emerald division, can lose pips cant lose tiers
sapphire-legendary divisions, can lose pips and tiers
I mean, if you want to rework the concept of leagues so it actually means something, get rid of safestops starting from amber.
At this point, amber doesn’t mean anything. It just means people who haven’t played enough games. This could be a bad player, or a new player just starting out. Make it so you can lose pips AND tiers in every single division.
No more players grinding 200+ games just for that 1 lucky streak of 5 wins in a row while losing the other 195. If they’re losing all those games, they drop until they can’t drop anymore.
Why not both?
A long break leads to more volatile MMR. And the fact that your competition is significantly less skilled = more wins. With your volatile MMR, those wins might tip you over into win streaks.
I’d also throw in something about how some schools are starting summer break now, while others are in the middle of exams and thus more leading to more skewing.
Simple answer. The “good” players hit legendary ages ago and gave up/went to Overwatch because queue times sucked. That left a vacuum which allowed the next level tier players to get into Legendary.
That means this season, the old diamond players are now legendary. And the old “stuck in ruby hell” players are now diamond and so on and so forth.
Players who took a break are going to have a very easy time playing all the way into legendary this season.
Of course match quality is unreal. I’ve never been in a match where eles think they’re roaming 1v1 gods and consistently abandon teamfights to chase squirrels, thieves fail at pulling off a stealth combo and then spend the rest of the match camping shortbow from a ledge, and necros who plop their kitten on one point and spend half the match "guarding it.
And we still manage to win because the opposing team is somehow worse.
If that’s not unreal match quality, I don’t know what is!
At least change the title of the post this is clearly a look at me I am awesome everyone else has no clue post. Misleading others for your own benefit, not really surprised.
It’s hardly misleading if it’s the truth. Queue times ARE getting shorter since more players have grinded up. They went from 6-10min average in diamond to average 3-6. If the trend continues, legendary rank players should be able to get queues semi-regularly now.
Rather than separitng soloq and teamq wich probably increase even more q times ,why not implement a system thats not so punishing for pugs while fighting premades.
-If you as a pug lose to a premade you dont lose any pip.
-If you as a pug win against a premade you win an extra pip.
-If you as a premade lose against a pug lose an extra pip.
-If you as a premade win against a pug get only a pip regarding if you are on a win streak or not.
I dont think its a perfect solution ,but it will probably help a bit ,with that said i have not encountered many premades this season can not speak for others.
I agree with this wholeheartedly. If you can’t separate the Sq from the Tq then those 3+ groups & prems need to have their advantage reduced to level the playing field.
A solo sacrifice and suffering abuse (at least until you eventually find other solos with whom you synergise with) isn’t what guild wars 2 should be aboutThe advantage is already there: Premades have an “MMR boost,” which means that the opposing team has a higher MMR. Pugs destroy premades all the time because they are frequently composed of better players. Why should I get an extra pip for a match I was already favored to win?
Maybe the MMR boost needs to be higher to “balance” the teams.
They’ve experimented with it before. If nothing has changed, it’s still probably 2% per teammate.

YW!
I hope more players come back soon! Queue times are soooo amazing right now! And match quality is unreal!
I’m pleased to announce that the dregs of PvP have finally grinded past ruby and made it into Diamond! If you’re looking to come back and make the final push up, or get some games in a reasonable amount of time, or even farm some bads for kittens and giggles, now is the time to do so.
Resistance is like Aegis on crack. Make it negate damaging condis only. CCs should still work, otherwise what’s the point of stability?
Remember the first druid reveal? Grace of the Land at the time was “While you are a celestial avatar, your allies gain reduced incoming condition damage.”
Can’t they slap that effect on resistance instead?
We are not holding them to different social standards, Ithilwen posted her opinions on the MMR system, that is all. People didn’t agree with her so decided that her posts made them insecure and felt the need to make comments about how bad she is in posts she is not even posting in, and therefore has no avenue to defend. This is just vicious and sad, the fact you condone it and try and make profit off it is just sad.
Make profit? Are you serious? This is how the game works! Arah paths sold for 3-6 gold depending on paths. Fractal 50s used to be like 10-20G. People sell raid clear instances for 2-5G. Certain raid boss clears for 100G and the Eternal title for a whole carry for 300G. Map completion is also easily worth at least 300G
An entire carry from amber to legendary sounds like somewhere in the ranges of 500+.
And if she’s looking for 1 on 1 tutoring, the market rate is $20 an hour, or however much equivalent that is in gold.
You know, people charge for carrying. If she wants a carry, what is she willing to offer in return? I’m not a charity.
I typically admire the stoic types more, I’m more willing to help those who help themselves. I might be more sympathetic if she didn’t already have a reputation of being abusive towards her own teammates and enemies.
Which is apparently ok, because she’s disabled. So she gets a free pass when she’s rude, but other people aren’t allowed to be rude back.
The h? really charge? WOW. as if you guys are really THAT GOOD?
dude, are you disabled? If not, its best to understand why she is rude or anything. You will never understand that if you are or were never disabled in your life.
Coming from the health field here, you have no idea why people with illnesses act rude or whatever. It is hard to be in their shoes.
So you people without disabilities should be the bigger persons here. Is that really hard to do?
Also, don’t be ableist and assume everyone you meet over the internet is neurotypical for start. People who are differently-abled shouldn’t be held to lesser societal standards than anyone else.
