If they are dead set on this ‘character bound’ stuff then extend it to everything- as the same argument could be made for all mats you collect towards a legendary weapon, mats for levelling up crafting skills, etc.
Why is wvw singled out for ‘character regression’ as we should all be calling it? How is it any different to being able to farm mats on one toon and use them to craft on another?
I want to be able to progress my account whilst playing a toon that helps the overall formation that we are playing in wvw- not be forced onto one toon and pretty much one build in order to build a ‘wvw’ title and then lose that title whenerver I hop on one of my other lvl 80 full exotic alts.
Ahh, my ‘new’ server (been at FSP for a few months) meets my old (Gandara).
Going to be fun seeing it from the other side – Ezekiel I’m gonna chase you around the map:-))..if I manage to defeat my apathy and play some.
this thread dropped off the bottom, deserves to be bumped as people haven’t seen the blog post.
zerg can still run around, cap everything for exp points as well as wiping out your smaller 24 man team whenever they run into them, if the zerg is big enough they only need 1-2 sup rams each door and are in in seconds.
Instead of a karma train (remember karma and badges, useful stuff, thought it might be for ascended stuff for wvw’rs one day…..) you will now have a Wexp train running 5 minutes behind each other to maximise returns.
And server organised Wexp fights which I described elsewhere.
What happened to the other threads on these wvw topics?
They seem to have been deleted en masse …..
As I stated in those, these character bound achievements are the worst idea in a bunch of bad ideas brought into the game recently- far from promoting variety, it feels more and more like being shoved into a pigeonhole.
I Lol’d at the bit where someone included pet damage – if you are firing from range in any sort of battle your pet will miss 50% or more of the time against anything other than a stationary target.
Ranger ranged damage is worse than warrior and thief. Ranger Dots are fairly pointless unless it’s a long drawn out battle and the other player is useless at condition removal.
Excellent! Now big guilds and those well organised and regimented (or just with a lot of time on their hands) will be able to show the rest of us what we are missing out on by being in our smaller, relaxed, casual group of friends guilds,
So 30 is the required number of guildies in order to be able to complete these? that assumes of course that they have the same motivation and lack of RL interuptions that testers would have had.
The problem is that our guild has something like 200-300 members, and most nights we might peak around 30 active- but some are trading, some are doing dailies , etc etc and the liklihood of getting them to run around aimlessly trying to find 6 targets within 15 minutes without being interupted by other guilds doing something similar is pretty remote.
Hence guild missions become just another reason people leave or ‘represent’ another guild.
This: Quote:It also creates a long term goal for players of multiple characters, as they can strive to rank up multiple characters to help show off their dedication to WvW.
How deluded are the devs exactly? Do they really think people are going to want to start on the bottom rung all over again for each character, lose all their abilities, title, etc and go through it all again ‘to show their dedication’?
Was pvp rank in gw character based? NO! And for the very obvious reasons that 1. it took a long time to reach the highest ranks and 2. frequently you would be on different characters for whatever reason, they all counted towards your score.
This new system is basically a big finger up towards those who like any variety- taken together with the new ‘improved’ dailies which pigeonhole you into areas you’d rather not waste your leisure time doing or just flat out HATE, lack of ascended gear being available in wvw or tradeable, etc it all looks not worthwhile- and I’m sure quite a few people will reach the same conclusion.
I’m willing to bet that the rewards won’t be balanced either, so it will still be way better to be in a large group than it will be to be taking objectives.
the ‘last hit= best Wexp’ also seems a broken way of measuring things and will be open to all sorts of abuse. I down a player, when someone comes along and instastabs them, do they get the most credit for being able to use a finishing move? How is ‘last hit’ calculated when the aoe is flying? Will be amusing to watch hammer warriors jumping into a pile of downed players to try and get credits and theives using their whirling attack to ensure they tag as many as possible.
As a now ‘casual’ player who likes to log different toons depending on what style I want to play that day (for MY enjoyment, they seem to have forgotten this is why people play games), the new system seems designed to discourage people from playing.
As to ‘more Wexp the longer the player survived’, this also seems a very strange way to measure anything and is open to all sorts of abuse. Let’s see: server A chats to server B, instead of arranging a fight club, they can now arrange a ‘Wexp fight. Server A runs to meets server B at the designated spot, allows server B to slaughter them. Server A now gets a turn, runs to spot, slaughters B who have now been alive a while and hence each team gets a pile of Wexp on the ’survivor’ system.
Or how about- wait until they have just about taken the keep (nevermind all those walls, gates, etc that someone paid for) before you pile in and wipe them, as that means they lived for longer and hence you just clocked up a big collection of Wexp, much better than saving the keep cannons, walls, supplies etc.
Coupled with the ‘badges of waste’ that were going to be for ascended gears so wvw’rs could obtain these in a similar way to pve’rs this game seemed to be headed in completely the wrong direction.
I Lol’d at the ‘play one toon and this will encourage people to try diffferent builds’. No, it won’t. People tend to play the build they feel comfortable with or Fotm build. Also GW2 toons are horribly restricted on the amount of skills they have so there isn’t that many vailable wvw builds for each class. People like to be able to progress on their account but be able to use different classes dependent on the situation and which one they feel like playing.
Many will log back in in the next few weeks to give the system a go and then leave again – for me the first big negative is the character bound nature of the titles, that’s almost a killer straight away.
I Will Avenge You!
Problem solved- when your pet dies you gain might and attack speed. GW1 skill.
The solution isn’t hard, It’s just that Anet don’t consider wvw when they do anything, all they care about is pve where they are worried buffing pets will make soloing bosses etc too easy….like any Dragon is seriously a challenge with 100+ people wailing on them, total lag and only skill auto atatck working.
If the ranger wiped your 4 players in wvw then you all sucked badly. Learn to beat other classes by playing them.
My guess is he stood in healing spring whilst you tried to hit him and he evaded your attacks.
Meanwhile you all totally failed to realise the pets were the damage- drag them out of the spring and cripple/stun/cc them or just dodge the pet attacks – not really that hard. If the pet is hitting you for 3-4.5k damage get the hell away until it loses whatever boosts and boons it has on.
Agree with OP. ANet defines us as ‘the masters of long range’, so quote This also puts the pet at your side putting the pet in optimal postion for attack since most of the time your target is the aggressor unquote is obviously not what they intended….
Our pets are supposed to be 50% of our damage, but as anyone with any experience of wvw knows, pets vary from a source of a buff to pretty much useless unless you roam around when your pet has more than half a chance of reaching the target without being slowed, crippled and generally dead, then you’re on pet cooldown and 50% of your damage is gone during the best fights.
Against moving targets they are next to useless. If you find enemies are always in your face you’re playing it wrong or seem to think melee ranger is the way to play, which is great if you like standing in one spot or like hobbling around crippled (much like your pet).
I’m still a great fan of watching a pet with ‘rampage as one’ come running towards me – all nice and red and glowy, making it completely obvious, then just avoiding every single one of it’s attacks while killing that melee ranger from range.
Easiest fix for pets would be to be able to call one out as soon as one dies, rather than face up to a minute without any sort of pet, which is the real problem.
Open world is easy to control too- give bosses/champs some AI so when a ranger swops out the pet that was about to die the ranger gets attacked, which will stop the ‘make pets stronger and they can tank anything in the open world’.
Trouble is, devs seem to think everyone plays out in the open world or running dungeons, whereas all the problems with the class come out in pvp and especially in wvw.
Bear in mind how they defined our class:
1. the MASTERS of long range.
2. Pets are half your damage.
Many classes have way better skills and way better damage using bows then we do. ‘Rapid Fire’ is one of the longest channels in the game, easily dodged, and even your own pet can block it!
Pets are pretty useless unless the target stands still.
The devs have no clue how to fix this without making rangers OP, so they don’t.
Here’s a subtle hint devs: try taking a look at gw1 skills and put something in gw2 that looks and feels like a real ranger class- hell, even ‘avenge me’ when your pet dies would be a good start to cover that huge loss in damage we suffer due to pathetic mechanics when the pet wonders off or fails to return.
Give it a few more months, and they will finally get around to revealing the ‘anti stealth pot’ which gives you the ability to see all stealthed toons in visual range for 30 seconds, yours for only 100 credits in the Trading Post.
Because they sure don’t seem to realise that having one class with a mechanic that no other class can disable/reveal/whatever is stupid.
This change won’t stop glass cannon builds from getting lucky crits and instastomping using their macro.
Whoever thought that a class should be able to do 10k damage with one skill from stealth (mug) and use 2/3 other skills within a second whilst the other player is paralysed at 8k, 8k, 6k obviously has no clue about balance and never will.
Luckily most of my toons can combat that mechanic if I’m awake enough…
(edited by Victory.2879)
The crying from thieves in this thread is making me laugh.
It’s pretty easy really- they take 55 minutes talking about everything else before mentioning rangers for less than a minute, tells you everything you need to know about it.
Be prepared to be disappointed again.
I think it’s great to be able to get one toon decked out in 6 months- so it would only take 6 years or so to get my alts equipped to the same standard……
As it’s not tradeable it’s pretty stupid really to expect someone to play for 6 years to get gears for his toons- and that’s before they bring in ascended weapons and armors etc.
It’s the same stupidity being applied across the game such as wvw achievements being character bound.
The MOST annoying thing is that the new ranks and achievements would appear to be CHARACTER bound. Talk about forced pigeonholing….
It’s quite clear ANet are completely clueless about wvw and it’s treated with about the same respect as a piece okitten on your shoe.
Yes, it makes a difference. Not a huge one, but there is a difference in stats and hence it makes a difference. Is it a major difference? No.
In a pure 50/50 fight, that 5% crit chance difference might make the difference in you getting that crucial crit hit at just the right time. Will you ever know? Unlikely.
What’s vastly more annoying is bringing in laurels, making all the ascended stuff untradeable and basically saying ‘do pve if you want ascended items’ and then saying ‘if you have multiple toons you are stuffed’.
After working out how long it would take to gear up my ten lvl80 full exotic toons (or even just the 3 I play most often in wvw) I reached an easy decision: I left the game.
Probably back after the wvw update just to see if they did anything that the players have been asking for to make wvw vaguely enjoyable again.
Here’s why thiefs are so annoying- you can’t see them. I have no doubt at all that along with the culling fix sometime (this month, maybe) thiefs will get some sort of boost to counter the fact we might actually see them before they finish their one second macro that does 18-20k damage before you can blink or move with basilisk on you.
I love the l2p arguments, one day I will learn how to counter being unable to move or use any skills during that one second that it takes for them to wipe out almost all my HP whilst not being able to see them….
Actually that’s not what really annoys me about them, it’s this: mesmer dead inside bay. Thief wonders around in Bay, happily picking off NPCs. Kills players when they come past (didn’t expect to be attacked inside their own bay, it’s been ours for an hour..). Even when you do try and take him on, he just stealths away until you all get bored trying to find him and go do something more fun.
Uncounterable stealth is the worst mechanic in a game ever. At least bring in some ‘detect’ potions if you are going to bring in a stupid mechanic, or make it so if someone is in ‘stealth’ they move at 25% normal speed.
Anyone who was quick off the mark or ingame early on could have got a precursor for under 100g- in fact there were several hundred players who exploited the bug and made piles of them, and ANet took the decision not to punish these people or take away the items obtained (mainly as it was ANet that screwed up the pricing).
A few months later, and at least some of these players will have items worth in total 100k- 1m gold.
There are a lot of players playing the TP, using spreadsheets etc to monitor pricing and even players who buy and sell gems and make a profit.
They promised us WvW changes quite a while ago and that never happened either.
Don’t believe a word of it either way- personally I think mounts will appear when they have squeezed all they can from people who buy deco rubbish, so around this time next year.
A mounted zerg in borderlands would just be funny to watch!
No.
Just make loot from players and rewards for taking and defending keeps better.
Said it before: make them randomly spawn in the map and at random times so people can’t just watch a timer, log across, autoattack and grab the loot.
But this is the game that doesn’t have solo options on dungeons, makes a pile of different currencies all non-tradeable, and has no clue on class balance in wvw or spvp, so i pretty much expect nothing much in the way of improvement any time soon.
Game got boring and repetitive way too quick, with no realistic targets or titles to aim at.
Let me know when it improves.
Make ascended items tradeable before worn. Problem solved.
In fact, for 99% of the casuals, making dungeon gears, fractals gears, and all the various ‘currencies’ tradeable would solve their gripes and make the game more enjoyable for everyone.
Games with dailies remind me of ‘Battle of the Immortals’ where mobs gave so little experience per kill the ONLY way to level up was…dailies. Dailies are tedious, repetitive, and force you to do something you don’t really want to be spending your time doing.
Looking at all that lovely blank space around the existing map area, there is no doubt in my mind that one of the options they have left open for themselves is to raise the level cap.
Quote: I would definitely not like a level increase since that would mean having to farm a new set of gear for every one of my characters again….
Exactly why they would increase the level cap- you would have to farm again in order to keep up with the Joneses.
Of course, as it will take me about 5 years or so just to equip my current toons with ascended stuff I don’t think they will ever get that far, never mind levelling them some more in some future expansion.
WvW ranks & abilities are character based. The best way to think of this system is as completely ruining character progression. There, I fixed it for you.
RANK and abilities character bound….It’s quite obvious no one on the dev team has a clue about pvp players as that is EXACTLY what the players didn’t want.
Abilities should be character bound- I have no problem with that if they are class specific. If they are generic skills like ‘carry 5 more supplies’ then they should be account bound. But rank should be account bound- making it character bound is just plain and simply utterly short sighted.
The untradeable grindfest items were bad enough, then we got untradeable laurels which only count one per account and now this..
I have ten level 80 toons. Does ANet really think restricting players to playing one class all the time in order to obtain rank and abilities make playing the game more fun?
I can see wvw getting to the point where two servers agree to just flip entire maps, taking turns, if it makes progress on ranks- two major guilds can easily achieve this.
Sad.
(edited by Victory.2879)
It’s pure and simple: GREED is what is creating the problem. Want a guaranteed one rare with little to no effort- then park up at a spawn point, log onto another toon, repeat until all spawns are covered. Next, check server dragon spawn timer, then log whatever toon is next up. Repeat.
They need to make the spawns totally random time wise and preferably location wise too- which would make the events a lot more ‘dynamic’ than they are now.
Would be a lot cooler to have a dragon appear in the sky and then land on someone’s head than the current ’let’s all spawn in to this one point where the dragon will get itself massacred in under a minute’, which is frankly rubbish.
Ahh now you have ruined it, people won’t chase me off a cliff any more!
Got to admit, shooting people near cliff edges, fearing them off, and pushing them off with the necro skills is one of the best bits of fun in wvw.
I only see one problem with this..who would want to be paired with a German or French speaking server? (No offence to them, I’m just talking about the language barrier).
I’m pretty sure most Americans aren’t that great at French or German (do they even teach you foreign languages in the USA- oh wait, Mexican is your most spoken language!), so don’t think the ‘merge servers’ idea would fly.
What would be much more fun would be server vs server match ups across the regions on a 30 vs 30 basis (or choose, from 10,15,20,25,30 and join a queue for a match up with your guild/server), where guild vs guild battles can take place and a rating table for each size battle can be seen- guild with most players gets the points, even if players from other guilds took part, with partial points for those other guilds and of course individual point tables too based on battle wins not personal kills (so support classes get equal ratings). Oh wait. I’m dreaming of something that was already done, with great success, in GW1- Guild Wars.
Ten level 80 toons- any wonder when I saw this system I pretty much gave up on the idea of ever getting ascended stuff for all my toons (especially as I don’t have the time/patience for multiple fractals runs, I’m mainly a wvw player.
Here’s the problem for dailies: quote: But hay if your going to get Ascended from daily only (the case in point so no monthly to cheat with) will take you 180 days and there is no back for you there.
That’s for one toon. I have ten level 80’s, so bearing in mind I would rather stab myself than do Fractals, it would take 1800 days to equip my toons with ascended stuff if they never bring in anything better and I log in faithfully every single day.
I can’t think of any other game that it takes that long to obtain grind gears in, and certainly not one that I would dream of playing.
Of course they have dug a hole for themselves as making ascended gears tradeable now would instantly pretty much kill off dailies, and keeping them untradeable means for many they cannot obtain them and they cease playing instead (or play less).
And to the poster above, when I play the game normally I don’t complete most of the daily topics, as my main focus is pvp (mostly wvw). In order to complete the dailies I have to waste my valuable leisure time finding places, etc that I don’t want to do, which is not why I play a game.
(edited by Victory.2879)
They have enough of that already, more stuff should be tradeable, not less.
Quote: There’s a small portion of players that like roaming with 5-10 guildies and picking off unorganized, talentless players in the mid-tiers
That sounds like it takes 5-10 of you to kill one hapless solo toon- which makes me wonder who is the talentless ones:-)
Got to agree they seem to be heading in the wrong direction with wvw but not for the changes you mentioned.
If they included the old choices too it would have been better, making the daily ‘complete 5 tasks from this stationary list of 20 or 25’. That would encourage the casual player to take on one of the new choices in a ‘oh let’s try that for a change’ type of way instead of ‘go there or else’.
The way they have it at the moment it’s like a job.
On a side note I don’t have most of the map unlocked on 8 of my 10 lvl80 characters as after I completed it twice there didn’t seem much point- so now I am forced to play toons I’m not particularly fond of to reach areas I don’t want to be in to do something I wasn’t planning on doing with my limited LEISURE time.
Games are supposed to be fun, engaging and something you look forward to doing, not another job to get through.
And the simple solution to all this would be to make the stuff TRADEABLE – from dungeons, fractals, laurels, etc instead of basically forcing people to do things they would rather not do in order to get things that they would like. I’m sure they had their reasons for making it like that but I’m pretty sure it’s not helping player retention and gem sales.
Hmm…these seem to be getting worse…
Maguuma jungle veterans: no idea where to find any. Wonder around map for 5 minutes doing nothing but looking – then see people hanging around a spot. Not something I consider ‘fun’ or a useful use of my time.
Dungeon completion: nope, not going to happen.
Gain a level: could probably do that one by playing for an hour, without having to go way out of my way to achieve it.
Krytan missions: another run around the map or hope someone in a map calls out an event and you get to it before it finishes and you get the reward.
Daily kills: easy
Crafter: yep
gather: yep
Kill 5 bessies in WVW: possible, if you can reach any of them before someone else does or the enemies that know this is now a daily and kill anyone not in a zerg. Otherwise, more running around to little effect as unless it spawns at a camp that is unguarded and you can manage to kill one.
I’ve lost the will to log in to GW2. Every time I do I’m reminded that they are still to fix the many things wrong with the professions and skills, karma is a waste of space and they keep inventing more ‘currencies’ and ‘items’ that are not tradeable in an effort to keep the ‘active’ player numbers up.
A lot of classes have few if any immobilises, and most will have used them prior to the downed state ele. My pet started casting it’s immobilise skill but by the time it had finished the ele had vapor form back into keep, got up, had a coffee, climbed up the wall, jumped off the wall, attacked and ran back inside the keep.
I did find it amusing that a thief is complaining about this- the class that can stomp from stealth….
Cheers all. Adds characters to be able to post.
As I have been known to say before, making any event where the drops are in one place from a set event that can be timed will lead to exactly what is happening now- hundreds of people park toons at the spawn point and log in at the spawn time, kill whatever it is, open chest, take loot, switch back to other toons. Now the rewards are improved the whole server (pretty much) will be doing it.
These are supposed to be ‘dynamic’ events, so the first step would be to make them spawn at RANDOM times through the day, not ‘Tequatl will spawn at exactly 6.32pm, 1000 toons will pop up a minute before, and at 6.34pm boss is dead and toons logged off, one rare or whatever richer.’ Who ever heard of evil nasty dragons appearing to a set pattern? Where’s the lore or gameplay in that?
If you want to improve things, make the drop rate of rares, precursors and exotics better from normal mobs outside of Orr, and REDUCE drop rates on mobs at events, so people are forced to spread out if they want drops.
And make all event timings RANDOM so people can’t just pop from one to another in a set pattern tagging mobs by aoe, etc.
So, I have piles of karma on various toons, post your ideas here for what I should use it for, as it’s pretty clear it will never be useful for obtaining ascended gears.
Excellent change. Now the people with ten toons on their account can log each one at a boss spawn point as before, and log into whatever one is next in line for a boss chest, and be guaranteed at least one rare per toon per day. You can get a reward from a dragon by hitting it a couple of times without any armor and holding one weapon:-)
I gave up on dragon killing after 20 attempts as the best I would ever get was blues and greens.
If I could be bothered to log into the game any more I’d plant 5-6 toons next to boss spawn points.
When I am on my mesmer in wvw, I almost always have null field on my bar unless I am specifically asked to run a portal. It really is very effective as both an offensive skill and a defensive one. I’m glamour specc’d and a bit of a mixed glamour/shatter.
Confusion isn’t a problem on any class I play, if you notice a pile of stacks call it on TS or stand next to the guardian or in the null field and it’s gone. It’s called knowing when to use condition removal and paying attention. It’s what non-gimmick builds have to do all the time.
D/D ele is the bigger problem- that getting up and running away off walls, back into towers etc or regen whilst resetting the fight gets old.
As WvW has become completely stale while we wait for balances (not going to happen) or updates (prepare to be underwhelmed), people have taken it upon themselves to invent content that they enjoy.
In this case it’s dueling. At other times it’s GvG.
The points have become increasingly meaningless as most of the time it’s pvd in the early hours that determines who wins over the week, and most people have tired of running around capping etc. As the rewards for defending are poor to non-existent, it’s little surprise that zerging is the way it’s played.
Depending on how we feel, we might come and ruin the duels one day and be in them the next- it’s all part of the fun and you’re never quite sure what might happen when a group approaches you. It is quite funny when some solo thief comes along and tries to kill the ‘enemies’ and we stand there and watch, then he dies and qq’s about us not helping, etc.
Once upon a time there was a JP in wvw, but then the devs finally realised what a stupid idea it was to put JP’s in a zone where numbers count towards the cap and having people doing the JP doesn’t help towards the points total, and they removed it to it’s very own JP filled zone where the JP’rs could play Jump Puzzle 2 all day along and think how much games have regressed since the first Mario jumping game on a handheld device.
The end.
WvW too hard for you? Facing people who might actually beat you? Be ready for you? Built to fight against you? Same level as you? Trying to convince yourself your ‘leet’ by attacking people who aren’t ready/doing something else/not got a pvp build on? Need to grief people because you can’t handle real fights?
Didums, sorry but no stupid childish ‘wave your kitten having defeated someone 50 levels below you’ in this game, thanks.
You want to duel or open pvp, go wvw and prove your not just a little child getting his jollies from attacking the innocent who have no interest in fighting or were busy doing something else.
Where’s the option: I log in and enter wvw as it’s a good place to complete my daily before I log out again?
Got bored with it- it’s interesting to note that there is much more excitement and fun to be had when guilds are organising their own gvg battles rather than actually doing wvw these days.
Maybe devs will wake up and smell the flowers and make a 20v20 gvg maps with tables , interserver, and we could have some real gvg going on. Get the new content guys working on it!
Depends on whether the thief gets the jump on you and instawins using a macro (22k hp , 1800 toughness, 3 hits and under 1 second dead while still waiting for thief to render). Not a lot you can do about that one, which is what most people complain about when talking about thieves.
If you see him coming you can beat most types of thief with a LB/SB fairly squishy build, not BM traited. the trick is to interupt his combo at which point he will be looking for the exit- LB3, LB2 before he stealths with a nice shiny char racial and qz and wait for the downed thief to reappear out of stealth- oh and throw barrage at that tent too. No need for any fancy solo build (I spec for group situations, not one on one roaming, I’d rather be taking or defending points and group play).
Now if only the devs had thought of this 20 v 20 arena type battles (oh wait, didn’t we have 8v8 in guild wars- GUILD wars, there’s a thought!).
Given the different game dynamics 20v20 for guild battles on dedicated maps with capture points, guild bases etc and a inter server guild ranking system would be brilliant- I bet it would be popular and make for good viewing too!
Yoohoo! Devs! Wake up!
