So if I run out of food/sharpening stones/oils and wish to craft some more or I wish to access the materials in my personal bank I have to leave home border and re-queue.

If someone calls out in map chat that they need help defending something while I am crafting I won’t see it any more because I won’t be crafting on home border.

Why?

I have seen plenty of complaints in WvW, but the presence of crafting stations wasn’t one of them.

If you run out then that’s bad planning on your part- they last 30 minutes or an hour. As they stack it’s easy to carry around 80-100 of each. I’ll restock when I hit 20.

And rather than standing there with crafting windows open you’ll now be actively doing something in wvw (hopefully) and might be present at whatever objective needs defending rather than standing taking up a q space at the stations.

A good move by Anet. Plenty of other places to do crafting, and your toon can be left standing right next to them whenever you log in to the game.

That sums up your problem in a nutshell.

You don’t want to try and build anything, but would rather bandwagon or server hop and just expect things to be magically better at the next place.

The bit that made me laugh in the OP’s post was this:

30 minutes go by and the cycle still continues, no progress made, and nothing gotten and nobody killed.

If you’re running around outside a tower for 30 minutes with zero progress you are obviously doing something wrong – like waving at the people inside, rather than trying different tactics.
Try splitting your forces, or sending a squad to drop a couple rams somewhere else, cap all the camps, generally force the enemy to have to come out to defend the other objectives.
Take a note of where there trebs are pointing and rush build one opposite , destroy it then clear all that pesky siege.
Have people running more supply so you can counter siege with ac, build catapults.
Rubbing your face for 30 minutes isn’t going to get the job done, this isn’t EoTM.

From the review, he mentioned ressing people caught in the firebreath, and being able to use the updrafts IF you have the points in mastery.

So not enough mastery points (or none) and splat your dead.

Fail to avoid the fire breath, downed, if no one resses you in time, dead.

And bear in mind the people playing in the demos aren’t pugs, these are invited players from some of the top pvp and wvw guilds using ts to communicate.

No doubt some will enjoy being pushed off edges, but to me it’s a kitteneesy.

Do Not Nerf Turret Engi

So you’re saying that engineer will laugh because he get no damage while outside of the point, but at the same time he’ll score points from that point for 1~5mins while fighting you?

Sir, can you share information about your Rank Level?

The example was of casting a MS as an ele onto the engi, or one or more of his turrets (if you’re lucky you’ll damage two with MS), which the engi avoids by moving out of the field of MS, which probably means he steps off the point for the duration of the MS, then merrily steps back on,still holding the point, still clocking points.

Fix Rangers

Having played ranger for a while, it’s incredibly easy to counter a LB ranger on almost any class. If you are dying to the long range then you need to learn to look around you and move out of harm’s way.

If you know there is a LB ranger on the other team, don’t stand in the middle of the cap point where he can range you down…

My favourite is playing against a lb ranger that has gs as secondary weapon- it’s sooo obvious when they are going to switch to gs and try a maul that it’s been ages since one managed to hit me with it.

My current build on ranger is condi sb/sw/wh with a couple of things following me around and some weird traits:-)

Sounds like they have brought the one shot mechanics to HoT and added the ‘knock you off the ledge’ that almost everyone hated in EoTM (and made it the karma train map, as no sensible people want a map where half your team falls off to fearmancers).

Ressing players isn’t really ‘contributing to the fight’, it’s more ‘fighting against cheesy one shot mechanics and running out of dodgerolls’.

Hopefully those mastery points won’t be needed elsewhere, and can be gained before you face this fight, as having to res and run back to the fight just to be knocked off the edge again is going to get old real fast.

I’m sure people will soon learn how to conquer it (looks like it’s team orientated open world) or it will be largely ignored.

He also said somewhere he is waiting to find out in what format they want the report, and exactly who he is supposed to send the report to.

All looks like smoke and mirrors so far, with the fall guy being Marmatt.

If it takes a month to even find out who to report to, what would be the likely timescale for any fixes? Are there any resources waiting for the reports so they can act on them and actually get something done?

Personally I don’t think this is going anywhere, like the CDI before it and the much hyped Anet employees playing last season (and getting an unrealistic view of what wvw is usually like).

I’d dearly love to be proved wrong.

Sigils: RNG and competitive play

I find it amusing that someone relying on crit hits (ie rng) on a zerk build is saying that fire proc on a sigil is OP and should be toned down.

Here comes a zerk warrior, 50% crit chance (just as an example). Total non-crit damage from HB let’s say 4k. total crit damage from HB 12k. Should I dodge as he might crit everything, or should I save a dodge and eat the damage?

So your argument is that the rng on a sigil with a cooldown is OP, but that your rng on your 12sec cooldown (whatever it is, not got it in front of me atm) monster damage skill is Ok?

By your argument cit chance and indeed any other ‘chance’ should be removed (how about ‘chance of proc’ on say a water field, etc?) to ‘level the playing field’…imagine how stale the already restricted build choice in pvp would become then!

Would be nice to know roughly how many cheaters were caught over the last month, might serve as a deterrent for others if the number is significant.

If it’s just a PR visit then obviously don’t release figures as it will just encourage the cheaters knowing that the chances of ever being looked at are slim to none.

Frankly any attention to wvw is nice to see, but it really needs a full time GM or two or three to cover the servers to help remove some of the hackers and cheaters.

The problem is that with good placement, even MS won’t hit more than one of the turrets (and the engi will just laugh taking no damage off point).

The turrets just have too much HP (and being immune to condis is just terrible design), it’s like playing 2.5 players on that point.

All the while as you try to dislodge him from the point, his team is wracking up the score, and therein lies the real problem- he will hold the point for 1-5 minutes scoring points, then you’ll cap and they will decap a minute later.

Having to kill some ai before you can even get near either the player or the point just isn’t good game design, especially when the ai ignores half the damage in the game and has more tankiness than most of the players on the field.

T1 Server - Why Stay?

Just go play pvp. Your roaming set up will pretty much work there and there are always lots of 1v1 , 1v2, etc to be had, and best of all, people are specced for it so it won’t be your usual faceroll of a poor zergling.

Just try not to die of boredom from the q waiting, the rage quitters, the ‘experts’ , etc

I play all eight professions and consider myself to be pretty competent sPvP player (except as a thief, I suck at it big time). Engi is probably my second favorite profession after warrior, which is my main.

Last night I was playing as turret engi in unranked Temple. At one point I was alone at mid and facing a warrior 1 vs 1. Mind you that I main warrior so I know every possible strategy that profession can use. My turrets were all positioned as they were supposed to yet this warrior managed to own me two times in a row. Do you know why? Because he was playing smart. He was not rushing like a fool in a middle of the cap point. Instead he was using Longbow from far away to clean my turrets and hide behind pillars when my turrets began an overcharge attack. When he saw me come closer he knew to use immobilize to prevent me from using KB on him.

That’s the exact moment (one of many actually) when I realized how useless turret engis can be if you face people which know how to play against them. You are solely relying on AI and overcharges which can be easily avoided if you pay attention. Not only that but if you use a rifle there are basically only two useful skills on it (net and KB) which have a long enough CD to be useless in team fights.

That being said, the conquest mode is the only reason why turret engis might feel OP. It literally tells people to do the exact opposite they are supposed to do against turret engis – rush toward the turrets. Once you learn NOT to do that you are pretty much good against any turret engi.

And how long did it take him to finally get you off the point while you continued to tick score? That’s the other problem with the build, you basically get 4 health bars (being the turrets that have to be killed before they can get near damaging you), and it takes forever to remove a good turret engi from a point.

Don’t agree with your ‘useless’ rifle skills either, unless you’re so used to the ai doing all your work that you’ve forgotten how much damage it does even with the auto attack over the amount of time it takes to remove you from the point.

Maybe they should nerf the time turrets stay up, the Hp of them and make them them have an uptime of around 10-15 seconds out of 40. What other profession has utilities that have as much HP, do so many effects and damage and stay up for so long?

In most games I play in, if there is a semi decent turret engi on the enemy team sitting on a spot I get my team to cap and hold the other two spots 5v4 rather than watch people wasting time or having to 2v1 against ai while their team racks up the score.

The build is too cheesy for a ‘hold points’ type pvp game.

Maybe they should make the selection always pop Courtyard whenever a turret engi is in the team and disable character change/swap if you choose engi:-)

Without a timescale for this report to even be submitted (or even to whom and in what form), I’m struggling to see the point of this thread.

With the best will in the world, I can’t see anything actually getting changed by this report system in the next six months due to the HoT release taking all resources.

More breakout events won’t help- the towers will still be reflipped 5 minutes later unless population is addressed. And the only way to encourage more people to play is for it to either have better rewards (and better than EoTM) or a total revamp of how matches are organised with much better mechanics (which isn’t going to happen).

While the PvP experience isn’t the same as PvE, PvE still makes you learn the mechanics of your profession and how the game works as a whole.

Indeed, you can make your own team, but that doesn’t mean the other team would have done the same and it is just as boring to have completely new players in the opposing team seeing as the match will be way too easy and thus boring.

PVE makes u ignore traits , as you dont have them until your practically 80 (most of them you get in the 70’s..). PVE also pigeonholes you into one build and one armor set, as you won’t have enough skill points to unlock more than one build, and won’t be able to afford more than one armor set.

That’s not exactly what I’d consider learning the mechanics of your profession when up to 22 you don’t have 90% of it unlocked.

Much better to allow PVP players to enter at lvl 2, then they can access all their class skills and most builds (some sigils are still locked behind SP and gold even in pvp) and learn to actually play their class.

About the only thing you might learn in pve is to dodge and mash button 1, play zerk as most boss encounters involve either mindless spamming or instant one shot mechanics, until you hit 80 at which point you still have very few skills unlocked or traits due to the ‘wonderful’ NPE change.

Adding to Conncepts post, I just assume good players wearing zerker will not be knocked into those firefields since they can dodge/block, or keep an ace up their sleeves for when it does happen to them (teleport, invulnerability…).

I entirely agree, with the key word being “good”. There are a lot of mediocre people in Berserker gear because the game’s a lot more forgiving than folks realize. If I have an agenda its not to see Berserker rendered useless, it’s to see it rendered risky enough that people accept that even if they personally have spider-sense and can hit every crucial dodge, not everyone should roll that way for fear of excessive floor-licking.

You do realize the majority of players are not in zerker gear do you?

I pretty much pug exclusively because I prefer the convenience of just grabbing a quick random fractal group, whenever I happen to be online. I would say more than 60% of players I’ve encountered are wearing something other than zerker gear. That 60% is probably and understatement. It amazes me how players are so caught up in trying to find and justify ways to penalize players who wear zerker gear. Its not as if the entire PvE model isn’t based on one shot mechanics already….that by default…penalize zerker gear more than any other gear type.

I’m actually in favor of mechanics that involve strategy…versus always staying in a stack…not that I don’t like the stack either though. Just so long as the strategies aren’t gimmicks that become tedious after the first couple of times or that require you to gear differently to avoid getting an unavoidable one shot.

I don’t see the taunt mechanic as being a PvP only thing…as someone else pointed out…it will apparently be a contributor to the defiance/break bar in PvE apparently. I’m just wary of the slippery slope of introducing more and more things into the game that could eventually lead to requiring groups to bring someone to control aggro…hence an eventual tank requirement.

One shot mechanics promote zerker meta. If there is someone wearing full zerker and someone wearing full pvt but both insta-down to the same one-shot attack if they dont dodge, then whats the point of having any toughness or vitality stats. There should be a viable option to build or sustain otherwise atleast where pve is concerned, all those fancy traitline and stat combinations are just for show and obselete.

This reply neatly summarises the main reason people use zerk. If you are going to get one shotted no matter what you’re wearing, why bother trying to be tankier?

It’s the fundamental problem with not having defined roles aka ‘the trinity’. In order to make events and bosses ‘challenging’ they have to devise cheese mechanics, one shot attacks, etc that make for twitch encounters that become very boring as soon as people learn which cheese it is.

This whole issue would be gone if Anet would let us upgrade with Badges of Honor. I’ve legit got about 15k of them lying around.

And then there would suddenly be loads of gold created in WvW with no sink whatsoever and thus the inflation would totally crash the market.

As opposed to the loot train in SW creating 50-60 loot boxes, gold, mats, etc per hour? where’s the sink there?

Maybe if some gold was available in wvw it wouldn’t be the dust bowl it is now….

Strangely the thought of huge ranged battles makes me happy, where the winning side would be the one that can successfully call targets and organise spikes, buffs, heals, boon stripping, blasting, etc without there being a brain dead hammer train ignoring incoming damage and laughing as some poor squishy melts himself from retal.

Is the first post going to be updated as the discussion goes on, or how will the ‘report’ be amended in light of people’s comments? How will people’s opinions be taken into account if nothing is posted in over a week? just asking…

It will be ‘amended’ by updating features that the general populous have been asking for. Along with new quotes, thread links, and more accurate statistics. At the moment im waiting for Anet to give me a more “structured” form of how they want the reports to look. I have my notes ready to be inputted for the next report.

Thanks for popping in and making a response. I thought the role was going to be a bit more pro active, but glad my prompting was noticed by someone (probably someone pm’d you reminding you that you are the wvw forum guy).

Sounds like you are about to become mired in that favourite way of ensuring nothing ever gets done, ie spending loads of time ‘structuring’ reports, ensuring the correct format is used, having committee meetinggs, focus groups, sub committes and all the other devices politicians and civil servants in particular use to pretend they are doing something whilst in actual fact achieving nothing (apart from piles of paper to pass to each other) and being able to deny any responsibility for any decision if one is ever made.

Given that people here can give you a list of 10-100 things that need to be looked at in wvw, if it’s going to take 2-3 months to get ONE report submitted (never mind read, considered, actioned, and something actually started to try and fix it), then this whole process looks just like the other smokescreens we’ve had regarding wvw.

The litmus test for their attention to wvw is the achievements- over two years and still nothing done to fix obviously broken targets, AP amounts rewarded. If they can’t be bothered to even fix that, why would anyone think that a report that takes 2-3 months to submit (about something that has been an issue since two years ago) is going to get any more attention and actual solid action?

I’m sure you mean well, but I think you’re in an impossible position (classic ‘appoint a fall guy’ politics).

Engi or Necro for WvW

Don’t run zerker necro and you can survive running inside the front line. Trait for the DS skill to heal allies and they will love you.
Don’t use lich form until well in to the fight when the snipers are otherwise occupied- if you pop at the start you will be dead before your first 1 spam hits anything.
If you decide on engi for wvw, leave your grenade kit at home- it’s by far the fastest way to kill yourself in the game (especially if you trait the extra grenade).
I used to enjoy FT/EG/rocket boots on a totally tanky build (pistol/shield), where I could blast through the front lines, wave FT at the squishy eles and necros, interupt them, etc and then boot back when it got too hot, but Anet nerfed a couple of skills that made it a lot less fun to play.
If you want piles of bags, choose necro, and don’t go zerker unless you like lying on the floor watching the fight, as the zerk thief and zerk ranger and zerk mes will all focus you.

Losing most of the PvP games

It’s often the guys with the lowest scores that are contributing the most. For example if you and an ally are capping a point… don’t. Leave and let him have the points. If you’re playing selfishly, it’s almost a 4v5 and you’ll lose consistently.

Sadly in solo q this is too often completely wrong. the lowest score guy is that thief that runs in to 3 enemies, dies, and proceeds to respawn and run straight in to the same 3 on mid, all game, whilst ignoring near that needs a recap. Or the power ranger that ignores you asking him to recap near when he respawned (after his 4th or 5th quick death) and instead run in to a fight of basically him against 4 of them…

I have seen a few lowest scores that have contributed a lot- I played mes for a couple matches last night and was continually attracting two or three of their players who seemed intent on trying to kill me no matter what- they managed to kill me a couple times but in the meantime the rest of the teamcapped/held all 3 points. I bottom scored but helped my team wipe them 500 to 225.

Sometimes I wish the /resign worked in solo q as it’s apparent after the first minute that your team totally sucks and you have just wasted 15 minutes of your life.

What do I do with extra Luck?

I recently hit the cap finally and have no use for luck. It is just stacking in my inventory. Here are some ideas that resolve the issue.

I think the best solution would be for Anet to make the game reset your luck stat to 0, and reward you with a wvw style reward for reaching the target. Congratulations on your 10 AP, oh and two greens and 15 silver.

I read your post as ‘boo hoo, I rushed to 300, boo hoo, you must do something Anet it’s all your fault Anet boo hoo’.

It’s just like having too much of any of the other non-tradables in the game- use that destroy option and stop coming on here moaning about a ‘problem’ that you only have yourself to blame for.

What did you expect to happen when you reached 300?

How works taunt on ranged players

I’m reading this skill as ‘bad idea to use on melee players who it won’t affect at all other than to reck yourself’ whilst being ‘stop those annoying ranged squishies from being able to play whilst you drag them in range of your heavy armored melee blob’.

Or to put it another way: those with natural regen like warriors and guards (and leeching like revenants) will laugh if you use this skill, whereas squishies will be prevented from using any survival skills, heals, combos whilst being dragged to an almost certain death.

Seems fair.

I’m not liking all those conditions a revenant can throw out whilst being a heavy armor class- confusion, torment, stacks of it, RF reflection (absorption?) shield, life stealing skills.

Looks a bit like a necro on steroids in one legendary form, but with better access to conditions .

Can’t wait to see how it plays when it finally comes.

New siege will be ‘fear cannon’ which fears people for 10 seconds whilst they try to cross the bridge over a chasm.

Mandatory jump puzzle will have to be completed before you are allowed in the wvw fight.

NPC’s will plant traps that will randomly blow people off the map.

The map will be huge and will take you ten minutes to rejoin the fight, or 2 if you buy the 5000 gems ‘transport’ upgrade.

/sarcasm.

I’m feeling a little jaded, not expecting much at all. Wonder how many wvw guilds and random player testers have been involved in testing the map during development…

Macros: A serious Offense?

You can bind most macros to mice key that comes with your mouse and keyboard software. AS long as you’re not using an automated bot program to spam it(which is obvious), i have never in the history of any game see anyone get banned for that.

Wow even encourages macros with its built in macro editor.

This isn’t WoW, now is it? It has been stated time and again that macros are allowed, as long as the macro is “one press, one action, no recording an attack chain, etc.”, with the exception being for instruments. Automation software not included, recorded macros are disallowed, and all the better. I’d rather have a player in a group know what they’re doing with their class than a script kiddie that recorded an attack chain to a G510s GKey and hits that every few seconds in between spamming 1.

Recorded macros might not be ‘allowed’ but that doesn’t mean toons with no cool downs between skills don’t use them. Certain classes can spam 4-6 skills in 0.25 of a second (play ‘spot the macro’) whilst you’re rooted which lends itself to a macro or two.

Why anyone feels the need to cheat in a game is an entirely different question reflecting the type of person they are.

The change is entirely to accommodate the new class, and will be ‘balanced’ around spvp.

Any affects on wvw will be purely unintentional, as they have no wvw test server so no proper testing of how players will make use of the new class and ‘balance’ changes.

Gotta love it when the staff ele decides before the match starts that he will man the treb, then mans it, dies, mans it, dies, treb destroyed so he goes and finds repair kit, dies, finally repairs treb, dies and thinks he has made a really good contribution to the loss.

Had exactly that issue with someone moaning they were top and yet the team lost- because they were ignoring the fact the other team had 2 or 3 points and were hell bent on killing players.

Try giving a few instructions during the match, some will actually do what you ask if it seems sensible.

Most frustrating is when the match starts and 3 go near and ALL stand on it uncontested while it caps because they want the 10 points/cap for daily/whatever.

Best laugh I had was someone mentioning ‘sic em’. Like any ranger will put this on their bar on the off chance that there is a thief on the other team, and that the skill will actually hit, and even if it does that the thief is running a build that needs stealth that much (pvp thiefs rely much more on blinds etc than stealth, removing stealth for a whole 4 seconds is a huge waste of a utility spot).

I’ll start: we get Courtyard. say in team ’don’t rush, thief pls equip sb to start’. thief promptly runs straight in to all five of them and dies. Resses, rinse and repeat all match. The worst bit- he’s actually trying to fight them, and complains that we’re not following in! End result: 500 to 50, they were way too good at ressing their downed. I top scored…

Thread should have been called ‘worst d/d ele ever to enter spvp shows how utterly useless he is’.

Easy fix to stealth would be to make it ‘stealthy’, ie you move slower whilst in stealth, so you give up your mobility in order to be invisible.
One of the perceived problems is that thiefs can outrun almost anything whilst not being seen.

The bigger problem for me is the lack of cooldown on skills, which means a thief can macro a chain and spam 5-6 skills in under a second, all whilst you are rooted due to a venom.

The stealth mechanic isn’t all that bad in pvp, as others have mentioned if they are in stealth they can’t cap, and most of the time you can see them coming.

Try ‘flanking’ when all he needs to do is turn in a circle and reflect all your projectiles until energy runs out, standing on the cap, and you’re two weapons were Lb and SB. You literally cannot attack him, so then the choice is run off somewhere else or stand there until his energy runs out.

Blanket anti- anything is never a good thing, and revenant seems to get both projectile and condition resistance.

No guesses for what we will see in the first couple of weeks- wvw full of them, and matches of 4 or 5 revenants.
