Aaah yeah, I’m all for this.
I want the gear I make to have my name on it!
The amount of customization was OFF THE CHART, you could make yourself tons of different pieces of equipment that would be used depending on where you were to go. About to go in a volcano? Better equip that anti-fire gear and that +80% damage against fire monsters! Going into a pyramid full of undead? Take this anti-undead sword and those scrolls that will make your sword fire element so you do 50% more damage to them, on top of the +80% from cards! You could get a whole set of headgears with different cards in them each giving you immunity against a condition, be it blind, stun, silence, etc.
In GW2 and modern mmo when you gear up you think ‘’ I’ll take this precision gear, so I crit more.. yeah. ’’
I wish those ideas from this old game could be implemented in a modern mmo (because RO is unplayable now, since the renewal and well, that kitten grind), it would be absolutely glorious.
Tl;dr version:
- You can only work toward getting the best gear at or close to max level
- In the game I’m comparing GW2 to (Ragnarok Online) you can start working toward the best gear as soon as you start playing
- Upgrades components are no fun since it’s all stat boosts with rare exceptions
- In RO there are tons and tons of different cards to slot in your items, and they have tons of different and interesting effects.
- I wish there was a way to implement RO’s feature in a modern MMO like GW2
Anyway, I get that it’s probably too late to change how gear is handled in GW2 so I’m pretty much just ranting there, I still would like to see what my fellow Tyrians think of the way gear is handled in this game and modern mmos in general. I’ll say it again though, I absolutely love GW2 in its current state, even with its flaws and I would never be able to go back to any other mmo again. Thanks Anet for this amazing game.
I tip my hat to you people who will read everything!
First, I absolutely love this game and I’ve had a blast playing it so far, but there is one thing I really dislike about this game and it’s the way gear is handled.
Gearing up is boring, simply put.
Now I bet you guys will assume that I’ll talk about WoW and no end-game gear treadmill but.. no! I’ll actually compare the way GW2 handles gearing up with a favorite mmo of mine which while has many flaws made gearing up extremely fun, Ragnarok Online.
Alright so the first thing I don’t like about how gearing up is handled in GW2 is that you need to be at or close to max level to start building up what will be your permanent equipment, why? Because lower level items will become completely obsolete as you level, so you’ll have to replace them.
The way RO handled equipment was different, the strength of a piece of gear wasn’t dependent of its level requirement (in fact most items had low level requirements), so a sword you could drop at level 5 from a crappy mob that had no special attacks could actually be more viable in PvP than another sword that was dropped from a super strong boss. And it was great, because you could start working toward your ultimate gear at level 5, and it was great because it broadened your options of things to do. Don’t feel like leveling? Go into one of the dozens of areas your character can tackle and try getting that bow of yours, and maybe some mats to upgrade it.
Each piece of gear was unique too, and most if not all weren’t part of a set, so you’d quest for single pieces of equipment instead of doing dungeons over and over for a whole set. When people talked about gear it was ‘’ Go for +int gear for your mage ’’, it was ‘’ Well you’d better get a Valkyrie Shield, and the Wool Scarf+Tidal Shoes combo’’, you weren’t questing for items with specific stats, but for the items themselves, and specific monsters dropped those items so you just had to go kick their behind and get your item, no millions of dungeons runs required.
Sure, the game was a grind but it didn’t change the fact that the idea was extremely good and so so so nice for the player.
Second thing I don’t really like about gearing up in GW2 is that pretty much every single upgrade component boosts stats, 2 items will boost different stats but it’s pretty much all there is to it, stat boosts. There are those rare sigils that have more interesting effects like +3% damage against a certain monster type or some kind of proc but their effect is so weak (or on such an insane cooldown) that stat boost upgrades are always the better option, the only notable exception is the Sigil of Superior Earth, but it’s really the only one. At least rune combos give bonus durations on conditions or boons, otherwise it’d be extremely boring.
Now to go back to Ragnarok Online, the way it handled equipment slottable upgrades is stellar, and in my opinion there is not a single mmo that has done it better. The game used cards, which were dropped by monsters at an absurdly low chance (0.01%, but the grind is not what this topic is about), each card could go in a specific piece of equipment, be it Armor (chest piece), boots, garment, headgear, accessory, shield or weapon and EVERY SINGLE CARD had a different effect, some could even combo with each others!
(There was a ton of them too check this out, and it’s not even all of them!)
The effects weren’t only stat boosts too, you had them sure, but you also had bonus damage against specific types of monsters (as well as monster sizes and elements), experience boosts against specific types of monsters, cards that gave you a chance to drop items on kill, cards that had some kind of proc effect, cards that gave you new skills (like a teleport skill, a low level heal skill or a hide skill), cards that reduced damage from certain elements/monsters and even cards that changed the element of your character (which was neutral by default).

Tarnished Coast is the unofficial one.
Ah so there’s a difference! Well it’s so minor that I never noticed!
Weapon switching out of combat maybe.
But in combat? No way.
Have turrets blow up automatically after a time? Like 5 minutes? And if the turret blows up that way there is no cooldown?
But then again it would be extremely easy to go around for a bot.
What about having the ‘’ Pick Up ’’ command actually have you pick them up so you can carry and deposit them somewhere else? It could change some of your skills so you could manually use the turret or something.
As of now there’s no difference between picking up a turret and detonating it (as far as I know anyway), so now there would be!
I’m aware of this, but it’s strange to have traits that are that situational with little to no use in an actual fight.
Why give them additional effects if people are only gonna use them for the falling damage reduction?
I wish our 1 was as strong as the mesmers one, jeebus this condition stacking skill is good, I’d love it as an actual weapon skill.
At least make the random condition one of the damaging ones.
Except for the obvious reduction of falling damage? I can’t think of a single reason why anybody would pick those traits instead of another one for PvE/PvP/WvW.
Are they joke traits or something?
I don’t like the idea of Rangers using whips. I imagine a Ranger is on good, friendly terms with their pets. I can’t imagine them whipping pets…
Whips can totally be used (and are used IRL) in such a way that the whip never actually hurt the animal.

Yup that’d be nice, it is suggested (as well as a ton of other things) in this topic :
Make helmet and shoulder removal apply to the character selection screen

I don’t really care about this but if it’s not too hard to implement, why not.
YES, YES!
I want this on my Engineer so hard. Totally supporting this idea.
+infinity
It’s not an issue, to delete the character you have to type its name in a field after clicking the button.
Risk-free!
It’s when it’s equipped, as in you’re actually using it.
Yeah, the character panel was amazing.
My suggestion could interest you : https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/suggestions/Suggestion-Improved-Hero-Panel-and-Clearer-Tooltips/first#post92803
Yeah the healing stat is in the present hero panel, but it could use improvements (like the healing bonus on the regeneration boon).
I think it’s a 10% bonus, not a static +10.
Whips would be amazing weapons I’d say.
They’d give mid/close range attack (like range of 300 or so) and they could have so many nice effects.
Rangers could use them as the ‘’ true ’’ beastmaster weapon, all skills would revolve around buffing the pet or combo-ing with it.
Mesmers would use them as the ‘’ go to ’’ weapon for any domination magic build, thus it’d be built around vulnerability and interuptions/immobilize
Delicious whips.
I always thought the Rifle should’ve been a sniper type weapon for Engineers.
Add a shotgun weapon type or something I don’t know and give it the present moveset.
Face it, the naga razer is the only thing that makes this class bareable

I don’t have a single problem with the class and I use the default keybinds and a normal mouse.
Welp.
Amazing tips so far, looking forward to what you have to say on some of my favorite skills (Net Turret and Personal Battering Ram).
Rocket Boots, Slick Shoes + Rifle gives you plenty of escape options, in fact you can never get caught by anything in 1vs1 since you’ll just go too far too fast.
Alright so my build will be all about not getting hit, ever, to accomplish that I’m going rifle with the following utility skills : Rocket Boots, Net Turret, PBR, no idea for elite.
My huge problem though is the traits, I don’t really know what I want except for 30 in tools for +50% Endurance Regen, -20% Gadget recharge and Always Prepared (this one is only because nothing else would really benefit me).
I know I want at least 10 points in Arms, for Hair Trigger (-20% rifle skill recharge rate).
Maybe 30 in Explosive? I’m thinking it could be nice because the +30% condition duration could REALLY help my build since it’d pretty much add a second to all my immobilization skills, problem is that the traits wouldn’t really benefit me since I won’t use anything explosive really.
Then a 20 in Inventions sounds nice because it’d get me the +10% speed in combat trait, as well as the invisibility when immobilized trait.
So I guess it’d look something like this, so far.
10/10/20/0/30 or 30/10/0/0/30
You guys have other suggestions?
The only standard MMO I could ever go back to is pre-renewal Ragnarok Online..
but well, we’ll never get it
I kinda like the idea of having monsters controlled by Anet folks.
One of the last one in the Norn beginning area that has you kill enemies around Crossroad Haven, the enemies that progress the heart are so few and as soon as you get too close to Svanir’s dome the other Heart comes up and you can’t continue the other.
He said he hated pets though, and Rangers are made in such a way that ignoring your pet is almost impossible (Oh how I wish it wasn’t so).
My Suggestion: Flight in Guild Wars 2; possible future expansion(?)

But… how would that even fit into lore?
Asuras.
Seriously, thanks to Asuras Anet can add whatever the hell they want and it’d be okay because ‘’ An Asura did it ’’.
Interesting idea though, not sure if I’m for it or not though!
Supposedly the pistol aoe effect compensates for the duration…
I would gladly trade one for the other, most procs have icd’s anyway, aoe doesn’t matter.Other classes condition builds can #1 spam kill. Why can’t we?
MORE DOTS PLEASE.
The AoE is so pathetic I almost forget it’s there.
I’d much much MUCH prefer removing that AoE and just give more bleed capabilities to the 1 attack.
I keep seeing people complaining about melee characters dying all the time because of various reason, do you think just giving them a faster endurange regen rate would help with those complaints? I think so, and it would still be balanced, because we wouldn’t give them MORE endurance, it would just heal up faster so you could dodge more often, but still only twice in a row.
Thoughts? It wouldn’t be too hard to code too I’m sure.
I LOVE the idea of giving passive effects to unused gadgets, it’d be great.
Utility Goggles : Increased Precision / Crit rate
Slick Shoes : Increased Speed (10-15%)
Rocket Boots : Reduced falling damage (?) higher jumps? Don’t know anything that’d fit them!
No idea for Mines and PBR either.
Still LOVE the idea.
Probably because Warriors have 2 easy mode builds.
Mainly Bull Rush + Hundred Blade and the Signet Build
The other classes have good build too, but I guess they’re not as popular or super duper strong as those 2 Warrior builds.
Also I play Engineer too, and I absolutely love it.
Allow the storage of rare crafting mats (Yellow ones) in the collectible tab

I don’t really see why we can’t store or yellow crafting mats (I’m talking about stuff like Onyx slivers and the like here) in the collectible tab while every single ‘’ base crafting material ’’ can be stored there.
Is it possible to have it changed so they too have their place in that delicious tab?
Please!

I support this idea, Longbow Rangers (and Greatsword Mesmers) are the only classes forced to switch weapons when the enemy gets closer because their damage takes a huge hit.
Ah, yeah that’s a good idea, adding it!
Also man this section of the forum is so ungodly fast, it’s like The Flash if he was a forum.
I’d rather give them a whip.
I mean.. Domination magic.. whip..
Also rangers could use the whip for a full beastmaster skillset!
Anything. Everything (& shouldn’t this be in the Engineer forum?
). I started out with turrets a lot; now I hardly use them, preferring the bomb / grenade kit. A guildmate swears by the elixir gun. I never equip anything other than pistols, but I’ve seen other comments here that tell me rifle or pistol / shield are great builds. One person expressed astonishment that I don’t slot a stun-break (but I don’t).
Anet have acknowledged that our class is, technically, broken apparently. Nevertheless, despite others complaining that it is weak, or samey, or unplayable, I’m not having any trouble with it. Experiment. There are so many possible variations on any class that no-one can say “This is the only build that works”.
Broken in the OP or UP way?
Yeah I must admit it bugs me too when I summon a phantasm in a DE and see it disappear before it even gets to fire its attack.
I approve of this idea.
I have AMD Mobility Radeon HD 4200 series…I have low fps but I dunno if I should even attempt this.
I’m in the same situation except with a Mobility Radeon HD 4500/5200 series.
Well the trailer wasn’t made by Anet, it was that V for Vendetta guy who did it, it’s why it’s kinda crappy.
Now I wonder if it’s an Anet or NCsoft idea, I’m going for NCsoft.
Playing on Tarnished Coast and I’ve noticed that most of the time the chat is almost completely empty except for stuff like ‘’ LFM Cadecus Explorable ’’ or the obligatory ‘’ Thanks ’’ after being revived, it it because I hang out in the beginner area? I think not since it’s usually in those areas the players are the most vocal and talkative, even if it’s not gaming related stuff.
I find it kinda strange since the game was supposedly built with socializing in mind and yet it seems to achieve the complete opposite, a game in which nobody socializes because grouping for PvE (except for dungeons) is pretty much useless (except if you have IRL friends to play with I guess, I don’t).
I’m still enjoying the game a LOT, but coming from mmos such as Ragnarok Online which pretty much are chat rooms with MMO elements (quite literally) it’s kinda weirding me out, I expected the same and even more when I got this!
Cities are pretty lively though, but it’s mostly RPers (TC is the unofficial RP server) so while it’s social interaction it’s not exactly the one I’m looking for (not 100% of the time anyway).
I’ve had the same bug in Plains of Ashford a few days ago, that was weird, but I was attacking faster too.
Because let’s face it, for all the good this game has the classes get stale extremely fast since the amount of weapons skills is so low (and you’re pigeon holed into one or 2 weapons depending of your build) and most utility skills are extremely situational or just plain boring to use.
I’m still enjoying this game greatly, though I couldn’t get past level 20 on any classes I tried because well, I was getting bored of doing the same thing over and over and over again.
So the question is, which class, according to you takes the longest time to become stale? If there’s a class that stays fresh all the way to 80 I’ll be all over it, if not I guess I’ll have to deal with it.
