The Stealth on the 3 attack is really useful.

Today on my new ranger I soloed the Svanir Marauder (The boss of one of the 2 meta events of Wayfarer foothills). Without stealth I probably wouldn’t have been able to do it, 2 dodge rolls can’t save you forever. Bought me precious seconds while my pet switching or heal was on cooldown. Obviously was useful to put aggro on my pet (they couldn’t live long but still would allow me to cast a full barrage) or gain some distance to be able to use the 10 arrows of Rapid Fire.

So as far as I’m concerned, the stealth is a pretty kitten great addition to the Ranger’s arsenal.

And I was level 13 at the time, so no overpowered stats (level 15 event)

I wrote a simple guide about how to get points : https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/livingworld/cutthroat/Southsun-Surival-How-to-get-points

It’s not a guaranteed way to get a ton of points, but I always got around 70 using those techniques.

4 – The Real Game : Ghost

You died, and you are now a ghost. You won’t have a chance to get the 50 points bonus for winning but you can still get an incredible amount of points.

Ghosts get 1 point every time they touch a Revenge Mote, those motes spawn naturally on the map but the main source of those little orb is other living players. Whenever a player salvage an item from a salvage spot it spawns a mote, for this reason salvage camps are the best places to find Revenge Motes, though this become less true later in the game (basically once there are 2-3 players left those places are almost barren), when your best source of Motes will be the naturally spawning one.

Ghosts get 5 abilities :

1- A trap that teleports you to the player who triggers it
2- A trap that makes the player who triggers it drop all his item
3- A trap that places 2 stacks of torment on the player who triggers it, as well as showing his position on the map
4- A skill that allows you to spawn a Karka
5- A dash

1 and 3 are the two best skills to use to rake up points.

No Karka? No Karka. Karkas might be strong, but they’re unreliable and a lot of players can escape them easily. Add to that the fact that you need a staggering 10 motes to spawn a karka and you’ll quickly notice that they’re not worth it, unless you die early and think you can kill more than 1 player with a single use of the skill.

The skill you want to use depends of your target. If the player you’re following is out of rations, a single Alarm Trap (3) is almost sure to kill him, this will gets you 7 points, and you’ll only have spent 4 motes. If the player you’re targeting has rations, then you’re better off just spamming 1 in front of him. It won’t affect him at all, but you’ll get 2 points every time he triggers it, which can get your score high extremely fast considering it only costs 1 mote to use this skill.

Be careful though, traps must be placed in front of the player you want to hit, if placed directly under him it will not do anything, unless the player leaves the AoE of the trap and then walks into it again, it’s incredibly unlikely though, don’t count on it.

5 – Conclusion

There we go, that’s all the tips I have for you guys, nothing mindblowing, but if it saves some players frustration I’ll be glad.

Thanks for reading!

Southsun Surival : How to get points

Vyniea.2054

typo in the title, boohoo

I’ve seen many posts on this forum complaining about the crazy amount of points needed for the achievement (I was one of those post even) but after playing for a while I realized that it wasn’t THAT hard getting 70+ points consistently. This guide will serve as a guideline to help you get as many points as possible. I’m by no mean an expert, though I have played the game more than enough to be able to give some tips and pointers to players who didn’t have the chance to play as much as I did.

0 – Worth of each action in points

1- Salvage, arrow hits, weapon hits
2- Trapping an opponent successfully
5- Killing an opponent
50- Being the last survivor

1 – The Beginning

At the beginning of the game you and all the other participants are around a big pile of items : rations, arrows, traps and weapons. After Evon finishes explaining the game you’ll be allowed to move, and the first 2-3 seconds of the game are really important.

There are two items you REALLY want to try and get your hands on, the first one is the pistol, the other is the sword. Why? Because those weapons are almost guaranteed kills, the pistol will almost surely get you 10 points, the sword 5, and even more if you try to finish off weakened opponents. If you don’t think you can grab either of those weapons try to get a pipe (can kill an enemy, but you need to hit twice, and you got 2 chances, make it count!) or an arrow. Ignore the rest completely.

Even rations? Even ration. In fact, after getting your weapon look around you and click surrounding players, try to find one who has a ration (or 2 if you’re lucky) and make him your target. Killing him will get you 5 points and a ration, which is arguably the most important item in the game. If you can still attack with the weapon you got, go for an opponent with both rations and arrows if possible, otherwise go for arrows.

2 – The Grace Period

During the first few minutes minutes of the games each players is protected by the Grace Period buff, which allows dying without becoming a ghost, there is no limit to how many time you can die and be respawned during those minutes. What does it mean? Be aggressive. Don’t hoard your arrows or your traps (except for ration traps, save those for later), whenever you can try and kill opponents, either with headshots (it’s very easy to get kills with headshot during the grace period, everybody is packed and most don’t pay attention to their surroundings) or the 1 skill, which is stellar at finishing off weakened opponents. Try to make every single arrow you shoot be a kill, but if not it’s no big deal, a hit is still worth a point.

Whenever you find yourself out of arrows or opponents to shoot just salvage, salvage as much as you can. 1 point per salvage might seem low, but your score will get high really fast because there is SO much to salvage. Salvaging gets you the tools you need to get more points anyway, so just do it.

Don’t try and find a hiding place during the Grace Period, it’s useless and will only make you get a low score. Heck you might even find yourself starving after a while because salvages are a really bad source of rations, and plants aren’t infinite.

3 – The Real Game : Survivor

The Grace Period has ended, now dying means something as you’ll become a ghost if you happen to get killed. Does it mean you should try and hide? No. You’re here for points, and to get points you need to salvage items, trap players and kill them.

Basically, do the exact same thing you were doing during the Grace Period, just try paying a tad more attention to your surroundings so you don’t get killed. If you have ration traps, this is where they’ll start being useful. Ration traps are one of the best tools in the arsenal or survivors when it comes to killing other players. They’re extremely deadly but can be hard to use efficiently, their area of effect is small and smart players will be able to differentiate a trap from a normal plant.

You want to place them where real plants used to be, or around corners. You can roll through them and take no damage, so blocking a tight corridor with one will do you no good against a good player.

Try surviving as long as possible, winning gives a crazy amount of points, so if you can succeed you’ll easily get more than 100+ points, but playing aggressively means you’re taking a lot of risks because you’re likely to be killed by the players you try to kill and you’ll have a few ghosts following you around and trying their kitten hardest to kill you. If you want to avoid the wrath of the ghosts, try to kill players far from salvage camps, that way they’ll not have access to a decent supply of revenge motes and won’t be able to do anything really threatening to you.

Too bad surviving is almost completely worthless.

You get 1-2 more silver and 300 more Karma, that’s it.

Meanwhile dying early from playing aggressively and spamming traps on living players will get you a ton of points and you’re name will be shown map wide as the top scorer, even though you didn’t win. And the name of the winner? Bah, who cares.

Surviving is more fun sure, but after getting the 2.5k points needed I’m pretty burnt out of the game.

Just... Horrible.

If it makes you mad…Don’t play it. No one is holding a gun to your head forcing you to play this. It is a game. In fact, it’s a game where you can do whatever you want, moreso than any other game I’ve ever seen. If you desperately want the back skin. Buy it on the TP. If you don’t have the money, farm one of the other mini games that are out. Regardless of win or lose, they do give money that’s comparable to CoF p1 farming. If you want the Gnashblade mini, do the other achievements. Pretty simple.

PS. I am not reading your block of text. I don’t have the time or patience. I can already tell what it says for the most part anyways.

It is almost necessary to play it to get the meta-achievement.

Air aspect needs a nerf

Vyniea.2054

Lightning is a good element since it has a stun, a trap, a good aoe and it has the strongest 1.

it’s still completely useless against Air crystal bearers though.

I don’t know if it’d be possible to make the skill ignore damage but not CC.

I think it’d be much fairer that way since it’d allow pulls from sun, knockbacks from air and traps from lightning. After all the other 2 elements don’t really have reliable defenses against it. Sun’s Bastion only covers a small area and it’s only 1 second stability so it’s easy to just wait it out. Lightning users can only dodge CC skills with a standard dodge, or take it and stun the enemy (not really a good idea).

Because of that I never knew who won any of the games I played in.

IMO the recent minigames are bad

in Cutthroat Politics

Posted by: Vyniea.2054

Vyniea.2054

They both have a lot of potentials and are already quite fun, but both need serious balancing.

Ghosts as a whole are overpowered in Southsun survival, being able to place invisible traps that torment is kinda ridiculous, it makes it so ghosts decide who wins and not raw skill. Karkas are another different beast, but should be dealt with too (Easy, remove their normal attack, leave their aoe attack only, it’s dodgeable and fairplay)

Aspect Arena really really favors the Air Aspect at the moment. They get an incredible knockdown that can send you meters away, and can ever push you OVER fences and down a cliff. Their mist form has a ridiculously low CD (it’s shorter than Lightning’s 2, which is kinda dumb) and it gives a crazy speed boost. It makes it almost impossible to kill a Air Aspect Crystal Bearer solo unless he’s bad or you get lucky. Can’t trap them with Electrical Storm, can’t push them back with Wind 2, Can’t pull them with Black Hole. Mist Form bypasses all of that. Sun Aspect can dodge all of it too with Bastion but it doesn’t make them invincible nor give them a speed boost. Lightning got well, a stun, which is fine.

So yeah, lots of potential, but lots of balancing to do too.

I started this game of Aspect Arena with another player who left as soon as loading finished, so I was left alone the whole time.

I still got a chest and it counted towards my “Aspect Arena Regular” achievement.

It’s not that big of a deal considering it only works for one game and the winner’s chest isn’t that much better but it’s still something worth looking into I think.

8/10 interesting to use Nix, but maybe too short. I like Eyrie a lot for the first name.

My new character is a human warrior called Rose Evilslayer. Simple, but I think Rose gives her a feminine touch even though she kicks butt.

8/10 for the necro the reasoning behind it is nice.

Not a big fan of Rose Evilslayer though, I love Rose as a name but Evilslayer is a tad hmm, uninspired maybe?

they obviously intended it to be a achievement that requires pvp!!!! So? It’s still a bad idea that promotes griefing and creates strife within player community. The only thing the fact that “it was intended” tells us is that someone at Anet messed up badly in the design stage.

Once, I agreed with this thinking. However, I no longer do.

ANet is trying to offer things to do for many different types of players. This particular achievement — and the meta achievement it contributes to — are aimed at people that are willing to both PvE and WvW. That’s not bad design, it’s catering to a demographic other than the PvE only folks. Given the sheer amount of achievements that are PvE only, this does not seem unfair. In fact, the total achievements aimed at PvE-only players is quite a bit higher than those aimed at groups that dislike PvE.

By the way, I still think there should be a meta achievement for exploring all of WvW, and one for exploring all of Tyria — both of which are required for the Gift of Exploration.

The problem though is that this achievement is necessary to get 100% completion on this event, and for some players getting 100% on a temporary event is a huge thing (I didn’t 100% Flame and Frost and I get it rubbed in my face everyday by the achievement panel), especially since it gives a prize you’ll never be able to obtain after the event it done.

It’s basically locking content behind a wall.

Is it bad to keep coming first?

What I hate are the traps placed in areas that are guaranteed to knock you off and set you back, sometimes a lot. I don’t use the traps against other players. I know they are in the game by design but personally I see them as the cheap way to win. When I run a race and there are few or no traps, I enjoy the race no matter where I place. When I run a race and there is trap after trap set to knock you off a platform, I want to slap someone and I feel very hostile towards the rest of the players. I don’t say anything but it reminds me of the competitive jerks that hit people in the throat with their elbow when the ref isn’t looking.

Traps are, just like in Mario Kart and similiar games, only useful for extending your lead. And yes, there are brutally mean places to put them. But that is the game and how it is played.

Remember that you still can see the false power-ups and you can activate your Grounded skill to avoid getting affected by them. Which you should. And it is easy to tell the false ones. They’re the ones that are in odd places.

It’s difficult to see them when you are using the lightning jump. And I’ve gone through races where they have been on consecutive lightning jumps. I know they are meant to be there and used, obviously, that’s why the developers put them in the game. Some players will feel this is strategic playing. That’s ok. I feel that it is saying, I’m slow, I can’t win by just going through the race, therefore, I’ll just win by having you thrown off a platform. We have different points of view. I see it as winning the “lazy” way.

Probably its because I like to compete against myself. Do better. Do better again. Make that jump faster, make that turn quicker, etc. I don’t care how the other players do, I’m not competing against them, I’m competing against how I did last time. I’m not going to put traps down for the other players. To me that is telling myself, well, guess you CAN’T do better.

My only problem with it is that falling off the track is way too punishing.

Falling to the ground takes forever if you’re lucky enough to not get stuck in scenery and then have to purposely jump down so you can finally respawn, then you’re set like a million meters back AND are rooted for like 2-3 seconds.

I think just falling down is enough punishment.

And that’s coming from someone who got the 1st place achievement, it’s just not fair.

Playing video games should be fun right? That’s why they’re made right?

Trying to beat Adnul at Belcher’s Bluff is anything but fun though, it feels more like work, gruesome hard work that’ll leave you panting on the ground cursing your life and reason you’re on the ground (I’m obviously exaggerating but he’s WAY too hard, even after the nerf).

I refuse to believe anybody had fun trying to beat this guy since it’s almost only a matter of pure luck, and for a game like this it’s incredibly annoying. Especially since he stands as a wall between the player and a reward that’ll only be available temporarily (as I assume the grandmaster will disappear when the event finishes).

So please, PLEASE Anet, nerf this guy so he stays challenging, but so he can be overcome by skilled player and not just lucky ones.

Hello! I am a returning player, I stopped playing around September last year for various reasons, but now my interest in GW2 was rekindled and I’m planning on starting to play again soon.

I’d like to know a few things though, basically what are the things that changed the most since September, I know there are the patch notes and all that jazz but while I’ve read them I’d still like to know what the players have to say about the game, since they’ve experienced the new content, the balancing patches and all that stuff, I haven’t.

My favorite classes were Mesmers, Thieves and Engineers, so if anything big happened to them (or bigger than what the patch note would allow me to guess) it’d be nice to know.

Anyway, thanks in advance for the answers and see you in-game.

in Mesmer

Posted by: Vyniea.2054

Vyniea.2054

So we all know that Warriors use a 3 parts meter that they have to fill to use burst skills, I’m pretty sure the mechanic would work well for mesmers if it was tweaked a bit.

Basically what would happen is that every time a part of the meter is filled (by dealing damage, or other means) a clone would spawn, the ones that do little to no damage and are only useful as shatter ammo. F1-F4 would be the usual shatter skills. I think having the mechanic work like that would allow much more freedom for builds since no matter how you trait your character clones and shatters would be useful since they’d just spawn as you fight so you can shatter them. Obviously it wouldn’t be balanced at all if we still allowed a 3 Phantasms limit, it’d need to be balanced somehow to work well with the new mechanic, one thing would be that they’re not shattered the usual way, but you would be able to re-use the phantasm skill to shatter them if they’re on the field, each phantasm having a different shatter.

More importantly though it would make creating clones a much more consistent affair, since at the moment they’re created with utility skills and weapon skills, which when are on cooldown don’t do much to create more clones, which frankly isn’t that great because mesmers are all about illusions and clones, we should be able to have them readily available at all time.

Thoughts?

Maybe, but all that gear you can buy with karma you can’t equip until level 80 so it’s still not fun, the whole fun is about being able to find gear you can equip at low level that will stay useful throughout the whole levelling process and even after you’ve caped!

At the moment anything but level 80 gear is just placeholder gear that’ll end up being replaced.

A sour look at the state of *pre-cap* crafting

in Crafting

Posted by: Vyniea.2054

Vyniea.2054

The problem in my opinion is less in crafting itself but it gear as a whole.

If every single piece of equipment was viable no matter at which level of crafting or character level you could make/drop it there wouldn’t be any problem, because it would all of a sudden be worth it to spend time at the lower levels. Higher level crafted items would only give different effects (for instance low gear could be plain stat boosts, high crafting level gear could give say, magic find or +critical chance) so depending of your character build going after gear that’s easily made wouldn’t be a waste of time nor obsolete.

Unfortunately for such a gear system to exist Anet would need to overhaul the whole stat system and it would take ages, since it would mean pretty much starting from scratch.

The only solution I see to this problem is to remove ‘’ tiers ’’ of insignas/inscriptions. For instance have the low level insignas do the usual stat boost, but have those boost scale with the level, and replace higher level insignas with something else.

With such a system there would always be a demand for low crafting level items since they would stay viable from level 10 to 80 because of their scaling, and higher level insignas/inscriptions would still be demanded for their various effects, depending of what type of gear the player wants.

If all the NPCs were actually talking with voices it would clutter your headphones. The silent talking animation in MMOs is used to create atmosphere more than anything else.

This.

I’d make the npcs who come see the queen say something though, the first time I saw someone enter the throne room I stood there and waited for something to happen because I wanted to see what happened in the world that was worth an audience with Queen Jennah.

But nothing happened.

Seems like having magic find in the hero panel is a popular idea :p

I don't like how this game handles gear.

We would need a ton of traits though!

And all the fun imo is going out in the field and getting those items, if you have them all right there in a list it’s not as fun!

Please remove drop caps for farming the same monster!

On the one hand, I see a point with limiting or reducing drop rates when someone is farming the same location or event, especially as a means to prevent botting.

Maybe have a popup asking a simple question whenever a player kills like 50 of the same monster in a short time frame (not counting DEs)?.

Like, what is yellow+blue : green.

Or a simple captcha, I don’t know.

It’s 2 turrets I think.

Gargoyles mysteriously vanish from Ascalon.

Why did gargoyle exist in the first place? What gave them birth?

Maybe the answers we seek lies in their making.
