Well after 9 years of warcraft I’ve had my fill… Anyhoo

Looking to get into pvp here and would like some advice on a few classes that you guys might recommend. I can’t remember if there are healers in this game or purely dps but I’d like a dps class. Melee or range makes no difference. Perferably no pet classes.

I’m also not looking for the FoTM, just a class that would be decent to get back in with. I’m waiting for the game to update and realized I may have a lvl 30 warrior.

Study http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Main_Page learn all you can about conditions, boons, player base health ect. and how they work before you even step foot into pvp, if you are coming from WoW’s pvp and expecting WoW’s pvp you will quit Gw2 in a day because this games pvp is not about rock,paper, it’s about counters to counters, that being said once you learn the ropes this games pvp is miles above WoW’s pvp and becomes so much fun.

This game has no main anything just different play styles, all can heal and tank in different ways all can support some better then others but what one lacks they make up in different areas, my advise is pick a class you enjoy and master it, flavor of the month classes in this game will get nerfed so there is no point in playing one.

Why not? I could care less, if anything I want people to see my build this helps them give me a good fight, I don’t want to upper hand because this means I didn’t out play the person, It means I only won because of the class not my skill.

Am am always willing to help players fine toon there build to better give me the challenge I seek, hiding a build because you think it give you the edge is cheap and lacks honor, like exploiting a boss fight just to win.

I have nothing to hide if someone want to fight me and learn how to become better or to counter me I will gladly tell them what I think might work, this to me makes the game fun.

Losing 1v1 Hurts More than Losing a Match

13 years of MMO gaming and I have never, repeat NEVER played or specced a class that wasn’t semi good in 1v1, playing a group build is not my cup of tea, sure if I happen to give support then great but I am not going out my way to do so if it cost me anything that will help aid me in 1v1.

Some might take this wrong so please don’t but I find it cowardly to rely on a group to be effective, and is the reason I dislike 90% of all MMO’s because they seem to balance mostly around group play. Gw2 seems to have gotten it right IMO, they balance every class as close as they can to 1v1 because they seem to understand that 1v1 balance means better group balance, this is the reason Gw2 seems to fair well with the 1v1 crowd.

Two players of equal skill level in theory should not be able to kill each other, that is balance, only when mistakes are made or being out numbered is when a player should lose, Gw2 has that for the most part.

I have fought every class 1v1 and many of those fight we just called it quits because the battle went on for 15+ mins. that my friend is balance, in Gw2 battle are won by countering mistakes not by frost mages and resto druids, (if you know what I mean lol)

I sometimes get so fussy with Anet, I will call them out fast if things start look like it’s heading down the (rock,paper,) route, (yes I know I am on Anets watch list lol) but I have a feeling they are hearing people like me out because they have took some of our concerns and addressed them, like the DDele nerf : )

Anyways, 1v1 like you said is personal and is the reason most love it so much.

Word to Anet “Never” stray from this path and you will as long as the servers are up have a customer : )

same build I run, a good defense is a good offense, this build is all about last man standing in 1v1 and in wvw more of the front line fighter, get in drop some damage get out.
The only difference between my build and this is I use GS/Gun as this person uses mace/shield, but use what ever weapon you see fit to fill what role you want to fill, I just like 2 handed sword and guns, but if you want to go all out tank use mace shield/ & mace/sword for two blocks.

U need a gun, I have found that without a gun warriors suck bad, you will forever get kited to no end, I use a great sword and a gun, as soon as I start to get kited I don’t waste my time I start shooting.

Also glass build don’t work for warrior it’s to hard to land your burst ,spec 10/0/30/30/0 full shout build with soldier runes, that way you have 4 condition wipes with the passive shake it off trait.

I have not lost a single 1v1 sense speccing this way, your damage isn’t as burst-y but you still hit a lot harder then any guardian spec even zerker guardians and you have more passive healing then they do, the effective health with this spec is around 60k more then pretty much any other class, the only class that has more is a bunker nerco.

In the defense tree use the new trait that reduces movement effects by 33% with the passive regen, the last trait you can use endure pain but I like spiked armor for more anti-kiting power.

Over all you will not lose any 1v1, the key is never to use your shouts on junk conditions use them on poisons (healing nerf), heavy bleeds (more then 5 stacks), or long burns, remember as soon as the kiting starts you start shooting, if they come close, back to greatsword, it’s as simple that.

Your hardest fights will good nerco bunkers and guardians, sometimes sword/dagger bunker rangers but other then that you should be able to wipe almost all the bad conditions and regen your health passively to counter any auto damage.

Lol I know right, and to make matters worst this dude in the video has only 16k lol but effective health is more like 80k.

I do however find it funny then people only play a class because it has the edge and get all booty hurt when the nerf bat starts swinging, I always said play a class that you truly enjoy no matter how kitten they may be because in MMORPG’s things never stay the same, there will be nerfs & buffs for years to come so in the end play what you truly enjoy not the flavor of the month.

Very much so thank you. Was disgusting trying to use this. My gw2 playing time was dropped down to nothing except doing my dailies but now I will be able to enjoy my favorite class again! All the other nerfs I can see as being warranted, they suck, but I see where you’re coming from.

The only tears here are tears of joy.

What video card and CPU are you running?

nvidia 550ti ,amd phenom ii x4 955 3.2ghz, the games runs great in spvp and world, my average fps is 60+ on high settings it’s WvW when the zergs starts to happen when my fps drops to 10fps, no lie lol I saw it as low as 7fps before.

More RAM only helps if you’re actually running out of available memory. The main issue is a CPU bottleneck. The game only works with one core, so you need a high clock rate on your processor to keep your framerate up.

Ah I see, so 3 of my cores are useless pretty much as I’m running 3.2, 4 core.

I get 60+ on high in PvE and SPvP, but in WvW I drop to 10 fps at times, my guess is lack of “RAM” I only got 4 Gigs of ram, my video card is good and so is my cpu so my guess it’s ram bottleneck am I right?

Would 8 Gigs do me right or do I need more?

Any rumors or info on the Warrior tweaks, I hear they are going to put Warrior on par with other classes when it comes to PvP, mainly SPvP, if so any word on how and what?

From my personal exp, there damage is fine, I would however like to see them get a buff in a defensive way, maybe tweak the core mechanics of the class, I would like to share my ideas on the subject.

Adrenaline can be the key on how to buff Warriors without making them flat out overpowered, as of now Warriors only have one way to use adrenaline and that is offensive, I was thinking why not add a second adrenaline move by adding a F2 for Warriors but unlike F1 make the F2 adrenaline move more defensive.

As of right now all F1 abilities are ways to apply offensive damage with and without stuns, F2 would focus more on personal defensive boons for the Warrior.

Examples:
F2 Greatsword adrenaline could give the Warrior 5/10/15 seconds of “Vigor”.

F2 Hammer adrenaline could give the Warrior 5/10/15 seconds of “Protection”.

F2 Sword adrenaline could give the Warrior 5/10/15 seconds of “Regeneration”.

F2 Mace adrenaline could give the Warrior 5/10/15 seconds “Aegis”

F2 Axe adrenaline could give the Warrior 5/10/15 seconds of “Swiftness”.

F2 Ranged weapons adrenaline could give the Warriors 2/4/6 seconds of “Stability”.

What do you guys think of my idea and if you have any of your own or rumors that you might of hear concerning the Warrior in PvP.

I never played a Necro, all my character slots are full until I buy more so until then I have to ask you guys.

I was fighting a good Necro, yes I lost but as I was laying there dead I saw a damage over time (condition) that was ticking on me for 1300+ damage, I tryed to find it in my combat log but it must of got lost in all the mess, I would like to know what it is so I can save my condition removals for that effect.

like a few weeks ago, I took some time off to play some other games came back to a patch and things feel off, not sure though maybe it’s me just bad luck with teams I was facing but not for 4 hours lol

Something is wrong, it almost seems like toughness is broken, like it’s not reducing it’s damage right, also healing seems not to scale like I remembered, with 1200+ healing, my healing seems like it has no effect from the + healing, however burn damage seems to scale higher , not sure if they tweaked how certain skills scale from stats like toughness, healing cond, ect but it’s not like I remember.

Dang man, I did some more testing to see if I was crazy but sure thing my turrets blow up even in mid combat.

For 5 mins I shot the test robot thinking maybe the timer starts if I don’t attack anyone for 5 mins, but nope they still blow up after 5 mins in combat.

A-net if you are reading you can’t let this stay this way, this a game breaking for a turret Eng, it’s one thing to have them blow up after 5 mins of no combat but to have them blow up in combat is broken, please fix this, I lost all urge to even play the class now, and i’m not really felling any other class so I may as well stop playing.

Maybe I don’t use turrets right, but why would you want to leave it in the same spot for more than 5 minutes?

To hold down fort, and I like the choice to move or destroy my own turret not a ghost timer doing it for my at the wrong time, I have had my turrets got out in mid battle, if they are going to keep it this way then they need to remove the cool down on turret deploy.

What is the reason for the ghost timer on our turrets, some say this is a way to combat bots and I understand that but this can’t be the case because pets can do the same thing, even better in some cases so that idea is bull.

I have an idea, remove the ghost timer from turrets and make it so the turrets will only attack if the player attacks or is attacked, this way it will work somewhat a like ranger’s pets on defensive mode, another idea you can do is make it that if turrets or pets kill and enemy without the player to aid they get no EXP, Glory, and can’t loot the bodies, this will stop AFK botting in it’s tracks without having to put our turrets on a ghost timer, which is a “MAJOR” pvp nerf BTW.

Yeah I just got back on yesterday after taking some time off to see the new changes and I see that my turrets also self destruct, to me this ruined my game play, I don’t even want to play anymore, the Eng was pretty much the only class that was holding me to this game, after this nerf I give up, I don’t care anymore.

Any way to lock fps to 45?

For now I would go getto, open up your side panel and point a room fan in there, lol Yes it works, I did that with my old computer when one of my fans went out during a summer time.

I never had this problem but today my abilities took a second or two to go off, more like a 2 second delay after pressing an ability.

I checked my ping and it’s around 30ish, my frame rate is 60+ so my only guess is it’s a problem on A-nets side.

It was so bad that I just logged off, i didn’t want to play with such bad ability lag, what seems to be the problems , bad patch, weekend overload, anyone?

This games seems to have a small Attack Field of View, and because so it seems to cause a lot of problems with landing attacks, mainly cone attacks when the target was clearly in view of the weapon.

Ok ill give you that. The rest of the world is beautiful. Though the only foreseeable problem is the current worlds lore. Just would not make sense.

I agree with you there lore would be a problem, but I am sure they can tweek lore for the sake of one pvp server, look at it this way, we in America, Euro, aross the world fight with each other, we have gangs, click’s ect. same should holds true in GW people, beings fight each other, but still fight for the same common goals, freedom, love for country ect..

And how is killing random individuals outside towns or when they are simple questing encourages fighting for “same common goals, freedom, love for country etc”? Open world pvp does nothing of the sort, it doesn’t promote any goals at all. Also, how is Open world pvp in any way related to gangs that fight each other either? It’s just a way for griefers and gankers to grief and gank people, nothing more nothing less, trying to make it sound “lore-friendly” or even role playing friendly is hillarious, it’s not, in any way or form.

simple rules like if in the same guild, group or friends list prevent you from attacking that player or in the same event, not sure really but I am open to the idea of a pvp server for those that want it, why limit the game if you can help it grow is my question.

I don’t know what kind of second life you were living back in “those days” but I have been, and still play pen & paper role playing games, I grew up with DnD. Never before in any of my campaigns did I ever go out to kill a random stranger to steal his loot. Open world pvp is not a life of wonder, danger, thrill and friendship and it has nothing to do with role playing the least bit, if you don’t understand what role playing truly is then I am not going to waste my time because you will “NEVER, IN ALL CAPS” understand.

Open world PVP has absolutely nothing to do with Role playing, anyone who even consider that has never played a role playing game with others.

As did I, I still have my first character from 1986, "Agrathen Warcrown,(on paper) god the memories : ) to this day 20+ years later all my character in MMO’s have that name in some way, “Warjin the name I use now” is a hybred of two of main my characters, A-Warcrown and Jinnvixx, I’m not trying to buttheads with a fellow olds school D & D player if anything I should show you respect for being one of the founders of what we all today call MMORPG’s

Some are lawful good and some not, the point is give the players freedom to roleplay, greifing or not, it should be there choice if they want that rule set or not, just saying “no” is like a DM saying you can’t back stab your friend, what fun is that in D&D, choice is what makes D&D fun not rules.

I just dont understand why you just ignore wvw. All the aspects of open world pvp are there. There is always toons runnin around solo trying to get map completion that you can gank. Why have seperate servers when they made wvw for this type of player.

The “World” is lovely for PvP, WvW is nice don’t get me wrong, but why not one server with a PvP rule set to use the would as a playground if you so wish, players like minded can use this world as a pvp arena.

Trying to convince yourself your ‘leet’ by attacking people who aren’t ready/doing something else/not got a pvp build on? Need to grief people because you can’t handle real fights?

Didums, sorry but no stupid childish ‘wave your kitten having defeated someone 50 levels below you’ in this game, thanks.

You want to duel or open pvp, go wvw and prove your not just a little child getting his jollies from attacking the innocent who have no interest in fighting or were busy doing something else.

It will be the same as WvW really, just using the whole map, characters would be scaled down to the zones level, the only difference would be gear and traits just like WvW so I fail to see the problem other then time and A-Nets team to make it happen.

Those games had open world pvp, because it was about living in a fantasy world full of wonder and danger, then after the main stream capitalist found out it and saw those nerd games where an untouched money making secret they went and made a game called World of Warcraft, (heard of it?)

After WoW MMORPG’s where never the same, they took a nerds best kept secret and made it another money grab like those console games, and bring in those console gamer’s with there “carebear” mindsets and forever ruined MMORPG’s by catering to the “instant glorification” mindset that the console gamer’s bring to the market.

I’m sorry, Ultima Online does not define the entire 1st generation of MMORPG games and of the first ‘big 4’ (UO, Asheron’s, EQ, DAoC) only UO had full pvp on all across the board, the others only had a small subset of servers with open world pvp and the majority of servers were, as you like to put it, ‘fully carebear’.

Please don’t try to speak for all ‘true MMO gamers’ as you have an opinion, just like I do, and just like anybody else does – and if you really want to go down to numbers, the early MMO’s very much showed that open PvP was not nearly as popular as ‘carebear’ shards.

AC1 Darktide had full FFA, Also the reason early MMO wasn’t as popular was because, just that, MMO’s where a niche game, at that time MMO’s where made by role players by role players, it was a small group of nerds that really wanted to take D&D from paper to screen.
After the main stream saw money they went and made MMO’s simple to grab the masses and forever moved from it’s roots. So yes I will speak for the old school-er’s because I am one, I know 100% why they played because I know why I played, that was to bring pen & paper to life, all other reasons are a lie, if not why play a MMO just play a console RPG like Final Fantasy or what ever was out at that time, online RPG players like myself payed up to $30 a mouth to be a part of a online D&D group (not counting internet fee’s) running on a 56k modem at best, before (AoL) “America Online”

P.S it’s a “LIE”, Darktide on AC was the most Pop server “I Was There”.

Same with EQ1 Sullon Zek or the “Zek servers” had the highest pop, check Wiki if you think I am lying. “I Was There”

Same goes with DAOC & UO “I Was There for DAOC, missed UO but wiki tells me so”

Hello everyone

I’m just wondering if anyone working at Anet has considered creating an open PVP server, or will it stay more the role playing style that it is now? I must admit that open world PVP is probably the number one thing I miss from other MMORPGs.

You want world pvp go play w v w !!!!
stop trying to ruin a brilliant game !!!!

you want griefing, ganking go play 1 of the bazzilion copy cats of the old standards out there !!!

again stop trying to ruin a brilliantly executed game !!!!

One server with that rule set will only do the game good, you can still have the brilliant game and more.

It can work, just have to set the rules, simple really, unable to attack players in events, city, group or guild, everything outside of that can be fair game, will they do it, well that’s another question, maybe when player pop drops they will add it in attempt to bring people back but by that time the it will be too late.

I find myself using a kit in WvW or sPvP every single time!
That obviously is because of the gadgets and turrets being underpowered, but they form about half of our skills! I want to use them aswell.

I expirimented a bit with the gadgets and turrets, but I don’t seem to pull it of. Every build I made almost instantly.. sucked.
My turrets break in 10 seconds, and my gadgets just aren’t that usefull. Rocket boots for instance looks nice when you read the discription, but when you use it you’ll get slammed to the ground for about 3 seconds.

Anyone else found a decent build with turrets/gadgets, mainly for WvW?

To me it seems that the Eng was thrown together at the last moment, that class concept is great but very poorly executed.

The class needs a major make over, damage is poop, survivability can be good but that’s it, to me the Eng class should be at the cutting edge of technology, instead we have a watered down Inspector Gadget.

The Eng should be a class that mimics and creates magic though there technology, they should have the best pistol and rifle attacks because they are the only class in the game with no melee and the fact that they are engineers, and what do engineers do, well they create and modify so IMO they should have simi-auto pistols, (no cast time on pistol auto shots), Aoe cone effect damage on there rifle (shot gun), modified grenade launcher & a bennett attack, leave the turrets but make them just a boon/utility that last like X amount of seconds no damage, just effect like the trap net, knock back ,stability, ect. that way A-net does not feel the need to nerf the heck out of there pistol/rifle damage because of the turret damage like it is now. (and yes that is the reason)

Well about low survability, I was using support build for PvP which is able to survive whole match without dying if I do mistake on rare ocasion, Engineer is just class were you notice your mistakes more. Eng might by lacking some things, but its not lacking fun, thats why no topic in here can persuade me to change.

I feel ya there, Eng IMO have the highest skill cap, however I made a tank-y Eng and they are tuff that’s for sure, my problem is when I do the same with all my other classes I can at least kill people, with the Eng tank my damage is to low , “Like really low” I can’t even take off any health from a target.

I’ll use my guardian for example, he is all tank but I can still kill people because at least my crits hits for over 2k, my Eng as a tank I am lucky to get a 500 crit from a bomb lol, forget about our simple shot, that hits for like 120 lol, our damage is out healed by rejuvenation spells dear lord lol.

I really do feel that Anet overlooked the simple shot damage due to our tools and turrets and that’s fine but the problem is our turrets get one shoted, I mean they are weaker then mesmer clones and at least those guys chase you down and do some damage before they are back up again in less then 5 seconds, we on the other hand have to wait at least 30 seconds to use our useless turrets, they just need to make simple shot instant like the rangers short bow attack and maybe bump up the dot damage so we are less reliant on our tools and turrets, no other class has to rely solely on there utility skills to do damage why should the Eng?

I never like the rifle on a Eng, hip shot look dumb IMO, and the self CC is a joke , I also hate that jump charge, why on earth does a Eng want to get in you face, if anything that skill seems more Warrior like, they should swap the Warrior rifle butt with the Eng. jump charge, this will be great to help Warriors close the gap to swap back to melee if they want and help the Eng stay ranged.

Eng. is lacking compared to other classes in terms of damage to survivability ratio.

Again I feel Anet overlooked this class and thought because of the tools & turrets that they should have the lowest base weapon damage and lowest base survivability, I know you can spec to become a pretty beefy Eng. and pretty good damage but it’s one or other unlike any other class that can find a happy D to S ratio.

Lets take the ranger’s short bow for example, this weapon has a lower base damage but is more then made up for with it’s instant speed cast and the mobile pet (pretty much a passive condition), the Eng. on the other hand has a very low damage pistol with a slow cast time and is not made up by other abilities like other classes.

I would like you to do some testing on making the pistol standard attack instant like the rangers short bow (this should even the damage to survivability ratio), also would like you to fix duel pistol number 4 (Blowtorch) this is a mess in PvP, the cone effect does not work half the time in both pvp & pve, how about make it something like a 360 spin that increases its condition damage the closer you are to the Eng.

Also just for looks make number 2 (Poison Dart Volley) shoot from both pistols.

It’s strange to me that you focused so much on stuns in terms of cc when, imo, immobility is actually the most powerful and deadly cc in the game.

You can still react when snared, as for stuns, knock backs ect. the player has no choice other then cool downs

It won’t ruin a class at all, all classes are bound by cast times and global cool downs, no class can spam 2 CC’s in under a second, that only happens when you have 2 or more classes using CC at the same time, then the CC stacks and creates stun-locking, having a 1 second immunity after each CC will prevent more then one class from stun-locking you, if anything this will help classes like necro’s, this will help all classes and make for a more enjoyable pvp environment.

acually necros can cast multiple cc effects, they can even do it as a counter. How will this help necros? The only thing this is doing is making bunker builds that much stronger, and giving you a better chance against multiple opponents. I do not see how it makes for a more enjoyable pvp environment, if multiple people are attacking you. You die, its that simple. What you are asking for is putting most 1v1 cc limitations in a group fight.

By that logic all MMO’s got it perfect first try, bottom line is MMO dev’s. are human they are like you and me they make mistakes and make errors.

So yes balance 1v1 and you balance group vs group, it’s simple math, 1+1=2, most MMO’s lack that logic because it’s easier to just make 1+1=3, look at every MMO out today and tell me have any of them came up with a perfect balance solution, the answer is no, and why because it’s hard, hard means money and time, so what we get is the junk we see today, GW2 on the other hand has the opportunity to make it right, they already have the foundation they just need the fine tuning.

There are so many counters to CC (stab/condi removal)and CC doesn’t last long.
Moreover, a team that coordinates and uses CC well should be rewarded.

I agree, but not mindless spamming CC “just because it works”, a team of players should have to use them wisely just like a single player would because a single player can’t just macro all CC to go off all at once like a team could causing 10+ seconds of CC, no class or team should be able to lock down anyone for longer then you would if you where alone, I might as well play WoW’s PvP if I wanted a stun-locking fest with mindless skill.

As others have said, you can just use alt/shift modifiers and triple your hotkeys within reach so you never have to move your hand. The one thing some people use “gaming mice” for is macros which do give an edge in some cases.

I use a gaming mouse to make use of my mouse wheel in this game (Gw2 does not let me remap my mouse wheel), I have mouse wheel back as my heal and mouse wheel forward as my roll, and man O man does it help big time.

Hello guys. I recently started pvping with my ele and what a nightmare. No I dont suck, I been the top player a few times. Problem is when I have to 1v1 some one. Crappy interface problems aside, I’ve been watching videos of people pvping with an ele and some how they are able to use skills with hot keys, move the character, AND move the camera all at the same time without changing any hotkeys. How the hell do they do this? Do they have 3 hands or what? Any advice appreciated, thanks.

invest in a Razer Naga makes a big difference.

just use stun breakers, keep them on your bar and sacrifice some dps if dont want to be chain cced

Yeah I play bunker build, just love being a tank-ish character and love my stun breaks, my problem really isn’t CC but how it is executed by multiple players at once and having it stack like a condition or boon,
A single player can have 10 different types of CC that won’t effect anyone because they are bound by global cool down on there abilities, however 10 different players using CC can have it stack like a boon or condition because they don’t respect each others global cool downs, my theory is if we give players a 1 second immunity this will treat incoming CC from multiple players like it would if you where fighting a single player bound by global cool downs and putting a end to mindless CC spamming and endless stun-locking.

You just said “I love how in this game no form of CC last more then a few seconds” yet you want there to be a cool down for CC? Just no, your argument is invalid.

Yes It is a great concept ,other MMo’s have long forms of CC and is the reason they are broken and never make it to any gaming leagues, however GW2 is almost spot on to becoming a valid MLG and it’s due to it’s short CC among other things, on that note GW2 is the first MMo that I know of that does not have some type of diminishing returns on there CC and I think they might have thought because there CC is so short there was no need for one, but as time goes on players start to use nothing but cheezy tactics to win, call it our gaming human nature, if there is an exploit players will use it and even risk getting ban just so they give themselves the illusion of skill.

A small 1 second immunity to self after being CCed will prevent chain CCing a target for 10 + seconds, so by having a immunity gap of 1 second between each CC will give players a choice to react, you can still chain CC but not all in a roll for 10 seconds flat, chain CC will have to be more strategically placed then mindless spammed.

Hell no.

Okay, you will find out, and I play every class, and mainly the stun happy classes, hammer Warrior/Gaurdian and I can tell you this, it is cheap is cheezy with no skill when I get a stun group going, It’s no faun after awhile and lacks personal player skill, I should not faceroll players due to me just chain CCing them, I should be out played, out thought, out skilled.
