I think the point of this thread (and correct me if I’m wrong), is that the game has take a huge turn from what it was originally intended to be since beta.

It’s not a matter of just those skill videos, it is a matter of the game as a whole. People are disheartened because the game they were sold, is not the game we have today. And for some, that is a bad thing. They wanted what was advertised to them, what they were sold on, what they saw in the betas and release. Not what we have now.

And it makes them sad to see what has become of what they once enjoyed.

The problem is, the original idea didn’t quite work out. The game lacked stickiness.

Its a MMO, and the MMO crowd wants stuff to work towards.

you’re right, they do, however thats only because thats what they have been taught

why couldn’t GW2 be different?

Because then they won’t play your game. Its like going to China and telling everyone ‘why don’t you guys start speaking Japanese instead?’.

It doesn’t happen.

and @ above

Not quite. The gaming community was treating GW2 like a single-player game. You buy the game, get to 80, do everything and see everywhere, then you never log back in again.

I just laugh at some of these forum people. Really, nowadays if you buy a console game, you might get 60 hours of play out of it, if its good. If you’re unlucky, or you own a Wii, it’ll be 15. A game that has multiplayer value, achievements, creativity, you might get a little more out of. This game lasts way beyond most, if you’ve seriously beat the game and done everything, you’ve probably played 2000 hours. What more do you expect out of a game?

Not much – how about 1) not changing the fundamentals of the game such as class balance every month.
2) Not introducing ridiculous gear grind
3) Stop dreaming about ESport. Never going to happen
4) Making more fun good looking PVE content which made Year One a success.
5) Going into forums expecting real discussion about the game and not getting astroturf.

1) Not sure if that would be a good thing. People are crying out for more balancing patches and if the fundamentals are bork, which they are at the moment, it needs changing.
2) Agreed on Ascended gear, do not agree if you’re talking about Legendaries. IMO its too easy atm.
3) Why not dream about ESports? Are you saying that game devs should never have ambitions?
4) TA and Tequatl if that was instanced are both fun PvE encounters. Fun is subjective.

Just look at how epic every raid looks like in WoW’s video ads and then look at how they actually look like in the game.

Camera angles and setups can do wonders. If you really wanted to, you can recreate those scenes in the game right now, just angle your camera right, set everythign up and edit the video a bit.

Hey guys, looks like the update notes were incorrect. These recipes do not require 100 of the mega materials, they require 10 (that’s 10,000 not 100,000 fangs/skulls/nougat). Sorry for the confusion! We are getting the update notes fixed!

Are you fixing them in game as well?

Because whether the updates notes say 10 or 100, the items in game say 100. So changing the update notes won’t matter unless you fix them in game as well.

And if this was a mistake, then why wasn’t it fixed awhile ago when this was first mentioned in all the threads complaining about it? Why wait until now to admit this was incorrect instead of yesterday when this issue was brought up?

because Anet?… or human error?no use complaining now unless they dont fix it

My concern is this.

They created a big ol’ thread on collaborative development and how they listen to our feedback and read the threads on these forums.

Yet since this update launched, people have been upset with the amount of grind required to get these weapons. There has been a lot of threads on this same subject in this section. All of them talk about how you need 100,000 materials to make these items. Numbers up the wazoo in all these threads about this “bug”.

The problem is, if this was indeed a “bug” that needed to be “fixed”, and if they do indeed read the threads and listen to our concerns/feedback, why wasn’t this brought up the instant it became an issue? If they honestly do read the threads and listen to us, they should/would of known about this the second we brought it up.

The event has been out for well over a day now, and they are just now acknowledging this “error”? An “error” that we have been talking about a lot since this event first started? Right away this raises the flag that they really aren’t listening to us and really don’t read the threads, or else they would of known about this “error” and would of done something about it yesterday instead of now (seeing as this is a rather large “error”).

And just to add a little fyi here, we didn’t get a patch in game for this, and asked around in game, and it is still 100k to make, not 10k.

That’s pretty common when you have large company actually.

Someone makes a typo, we bring it up. A forum mod/dev reads it and thinks ‘this can’t be right…’ and emails the appropriate people to confirm this is a typo. They take a while to email back because busy with other stuff/out of office/forgot to have outlook open, then a day later the reply comes through.

EDIT: Dang, you got it before me.

Well, there’s two things we need to consider.

1. What ARE Elder Dragons? If they’re actually a force of nature of some sort, then I don;t think we could actually kill them in the traditional sense.
2. Zhaitan knew what all his servants knew and could command them telepathically at will, so it is possible that his conscience is actually implanted into every minion he has, and thus killing the dragon himself wouldn’t actually kill him, but only destroy his body.

Xae Isareth.1364

Vayne, yes of course there was a level of grind, but are you really comparing those in GW1 with the ‘achievements’ in GW2 or the acquisition of legendary items? They are worlds apart. On top of that is the soulbound mechanic which means you can’t choose to play for gold and buy your way through, you actually have to go do it. Personally I believe allowing different paths to achieve the same goal is a good idea.

Both achievements and Legendaries are purely optional and either offer you pretty much negligible (eg. +1% gold) benefits or just cosmetics. Provides stuff to do for the hardcore players, which is a good thing.

Stuff being soulbound has its advantages, one being that it lets you show off your achievements. People raged at how Legendaries provided you with the alternative option of just buying it outright.

WvW became this way because of a combination of human nature and this being a MMO.

1. People don’t like losing, so they’ll always join the winning team (server).
2. There’s PvE-related benefits from WvW, and the fact that they just announced a WvW Season with actual loot made things worse. MMO gamers places heavy emphasis on benefits and loot, so they make beeline for the better servers.

^ GW1 didn’t have bi-weekly updates. They promised 6 monthly ones and still fell short of that. It was also very likely a simpler game to update, for a start, the graphics are not as good as GW2.

I actually don’t care for numbers but actually quality and mass. It doesn’t matter if you get 24 updates a year you still get way less content than in one patch per year. On top of that every of these little updates doesn’t ft well together with each other and feels seperated from the world.

In the first year of gw1, that game got so much more story than gw2 did in the first year. And the quality was much higher.
And wayne graphics. I don’t care about them. This is the last argument I would make when deciding if a game is good or not. What counts is gameplay (which contains different things varieying with different genres). Especially for this point, graphics doesn’t matter at all. How do graphics affect writing a good story? How do graphics affect creating a good system to deliver a story well. I can say to your for sure: Not a single bit.

I didn’t say graphics are needed to create lore. I implied that graphics helps to sell your game.

Otherwise developers wouldn’t be spending millions improving them and every MMO we have would still be running on RuneScape classic graphics. You may not care but the public clearly does.

The problem is that we got a downward spiral on T<2 servers. I don’t think the players are going anywhere but..

1. Large guilds start leaving for T1/2 servers because of WvW.
2.This makes WvW almost unplayable for those that remain because they just get stomped all the time, so more WvWers leave.
3. Everyone else sees an emptying server, and so they leave as well.

400g worth of nougats for the RECIPE for a 250g staff.

First of all, unless someone was expecting the price of those materials to crash to nothingness, what were they thinking? If they do in fact crash to basically being worth nothing, then what did they expect people to do the events for? Fun running zerging around a bland and empty maze?

Second of all, why isn’t there achievements for the minigame or the clocktower?

If you take a look at the charts you’ll find out that the price of halloween-related items was drove up significantly by speculators a few days before the Halloween event was live.
Once the initial rush is over and players increase the supply of those items, their price will go down. I dunno if they will reach the same value that they had last year, but most likely they’ll tank in price.

As I stated in my OP, the problem is that if they tank in price, whats the point of farming them in the maze?

Zerging around the maze is far from fun and the bosses are just complete nonsense.

Besides that. How in the world is anyone supposed to get 100,000 chattering skulls DIY?

In GW1 events like this also brought us an opportunity to grind Lucky/Unlucky and Gamer titles to try and make a tiny dent in the insane number of points required.

I’m not saying it’s ok, but after some of the GW1 titles I can’t imagine anything in GW2 looking like an excessive grind.

The difference is in the reward. In GW1, it was just for a title, not for items or other tangible/beneficial rewards. The worst of the grind in GW2 is for weapon skins, which are a huge thing in a game where the end-game prestige primarily about style.

Titles and weapon skins amount to the same thing in my eyes. They;re both either for showing off or making your character sound/look cool.

There are 3 legendary creatures in the labyrinth and they each have their own event and achievement for defeating them. They are:

The Labyrinthine Horror, the Grand High Viscount of Candy Corn, and the Skeletal Lich.

And here I see one of the biggest design flaws of the whole zone (or “event” in general). I’m no professional game dev; only did some indie niveau development so far, but from my experience of playing MMOs for about 12 years:

  • There are indeed three different bosses with their own little events, although all three are very basic: giant meat bags with different aoe damage effects being able to kill most characters in just a few wills. There is no special mechanic, nothing to figure out, just brawling.

I’m not sure if giving each their own unique mechanics would be a good thing. Look a Tequatl: they buffed it up from a giant meatbag to a giant meatbag that requires a bit of co-ordination and look what happened.

Sure. They missed the chance to do so in beta. They apparently wanted to give their manifesto a shot in the wide open world.

But that doesn’t change anything really. Should they have stuck with what wasn’t working since it was post-release?

Xcom is saying they should release it as a test, so that if people dont like it they can take it out or change it. They take forever to change things and they rarely test things with the majority of the community before setting them into stone.

First of all, only a small portion of players actually goes into test servers, so the opinion you get isn’t going to be very representative.

Secondly, if the situation is that the game isn’t getting enough players, asking the current playerbase about something isn’t going to let you find out what the people who aren’t playing the game.

They are approaching the issue wrong, instead of doing a complete 180 they need to take smaller steps. This way they don’t anger the fans that bought the game for reasons they advertise.

Who said the core fans are more important? No one did.

again, I can’t see the 180. My arguments still stay without your comments on it. What exactly is the 180 you are talking about?

From comments like this:

“Here’s what we believe: If someone wants to play for a thousand hours to get an item that is so rare that other players can’t realistically acquire it, that rare item should be differentiated by its visual appearance and rarity alone, not by being more powerful than everything else in the game. Otherwise, your MMO becomes all about grinding to get the best gear. We don’t make grindy games — we leave the grind to other MMOs. – Mike O’Brien, President of Arenanet

I am not going to get into this whole argument again. But obviously things like this are not true.

The problem is that you really aren’t exactly grinding for Ascended gear. Your just doing content that gives you mats to get them. It would be like complaining Mario games are a grind for stars. Yes it requires repeating content, but it’s not repeating the same thing over and over (which is generally what grinds are interpreted as) and also you gotta ask yourself what you would be doing otherwise anyways in a MMO.

The only grind is for Legendaries, which like their statement implies, is for looks only.

The problem with some dungeons is that their reward =/= time spent. Or too RNGy. Like today, I finally got an ascended ring drop from fotm, but on most other runs, I don’t get very good loots :/

But yea, glad everyones still got something to do in this game I think I’ll continue farming and work on getting 300% magic find. Thanks for the replies guys!

You get an Ascended ring pretty much everyday on your first full FotM run each day on level 10 or higher runs. It also depends on your party. A good party and run though most dungeons in the game in about 10-15 mins so the 1 to 1.5 g is pretty reasonable, along with the emp frags.

Blizzard pulls the same crap, or any other gaming company really. It’s always “soon” or “we’re looking into it” or “it’s on our radar for now”.

Best example: cross realm heirloom mailing.

Back on topic, Blizz does decent with explaining why something wouldn’t work or if changes are coming, explaining why on the forum threads that are made about it.

This here is just a bunch of swerving and kiting and we get no kind of explanation as to why things happen.

You can’t tell me kitten like that is annoying.

There’s an argument that posting on forums or making promises as a dev is a bad thing.
Posting too much leads to people posting back, which tends to start debates. Given this is the Internet, debates turn into heated arguments with your costumer base. Never a good thing.

A dev saying they’ll implement x idea in y weeks time is a bad idea because then the players will hold you up on it. If you then go and work on it then realise it won’t work, you got this fiasco with the manifesto.

That’s not true. Again, I’m a console player and that’s mainly because the lot of games I play are geared around game play, not loot. If they can get me, then why can’t they get the hundreds of thousands of other console players?

If Anet wants to be truly innovative, then they can devise a way to move this mindset over to the game play & combat etc.

One reason is that what you can do in a console game is much less limited than what you can do in a MMO. For example, any slow-mo effects which can become popular in console games can’t really be done in a MMO.

Trying to design a MMO to be just like a console game results in a really kitten console game which neither group wants to play.

Nope,. it won’t be the case for Guild Wars 2. Guild Wars 2 already has in less than a year, half the sales that Guild Wars 1 had in it’s entire lifetime and it hasn’t released in China yet.

You didn’t mention the part where 80% of those sales were made in the previous year and the number of sales since then dropped significantly. And will continue to drop, since most of the people that have been interested in this game have likely bought it already. Yes, chinese sales might change that, but so far the chinese market has been very resistant to western style MMO’s, due to many reasons.

One of which is that there’s not enough grind. Chinese culture is about competition and progress.

A game with a Casual difficulty level. Most of the game is trash mobs.

But introduces a hardcore grind for its latest tier of rewards. Ascended weapons are the biggest grind I have ever seen.

Who is this game aimed at then? The casual player doesn’t want to grind for the Ascended rewards. The hard core player finds the combat (the core of the game) trivial and unexciting.

It appeals to no group in particular.

First of all, what’s hardcore? I’ve always considered RuneScape to be a ‘hardcore’ game because of how hardcore you needed to be patient to get anything of value in that game. Nothing was actually difficult. You need to define hardcore.

The fun thing is, Guild Wars 2 has enough potential to rival WoWs place at the top of the MMO Ranks, if it would develop in the right ways through the next years

Unfortunately that ship has past us a long time ago. MMOs don’t that time anymore, they did 10 years ago, but today if you are not competing and launch, you are old news. There are couple of big new MMOs coming out next year, and that will spread out the MMO population even more.

What concerns me more is that NCSoft will not fund GW2 and treat it like a red headed stepchild because they got WildStar to worry about. Their supposed cash cow that will have subscriptions. Why would NCSoft want WildStar and GW2 to compete with each other?

This is also one of the reasons I don’t see an expansion, at least not next year.

Because of diversification. Look at Jagex at the moment, if RuneScape dies, they’re completely screwed. That’s not a situation you want to be in.

And I don’t think Wildstar is going to be THAT successful. The game’s design rings of WoW-in-space, and I can’t think of one MMO that did amazingly well trying to out-WoW WoW.

It’s definitely annoying but I can see why.

Prior to this, I very very rarely bothered with events, and still got myself about 700 obs shards in like 2 months. That’s not right.

which other MMOs had JPs? None

Well thank god for that. They’re horrible.

Without reading the entire third+ page of back-and-forth arguing, I’d like to chime in here and say that I love the jumping puzzles. They’re fun, and I’ve never felt more accomplished in a game than I did when I reached the top of the Mad King’s Clocktower last year. I hope they bring it back again.

Jumping puzzles are magnificent. Best part of this game aswell. Just think about all those incredible experiences. <3

Apart from that… a lot of this game is rather annoying. Dungeons are an endless repetition, after doing them 100+ times you get reaaaally bored. Dynamic events don’t have any real impact on the world and reward players badly. Champions are a zerg-fest, not an unique boss fight. WvW is a zergfest aswell, no tactics. Personal story is cliché and bland. The gear system… is rather useless; needing different armour sets for different builds? That’s just bad managing. Also ascended gear is a totally unecessary addition. Structured PvP has no progression. So overall PvP is rather disappointing. Living story has no impact and feels like filler (carrot/stick) content. Achievements are numbers without a meaning.

The lore however (that is, the racial backgrounds and world) is incredible and unique!
The combat is one of the smoothest in any game I played.
The classes, especially engineer, are unique and feel useful.
The fact you don’t need specific healers is also very nice, but it’s sad that the pure damage output is stronger than any other build.

I’m sure you would get mired of anything after doing it 100+ times. The dungeons for me are the best dungeons I’ve experienced in a MMO, because it’s like they took the legendary dungeons of DDO and made them better (ie not the same puzzles over and over again).

There isn’t supposed to be any progress in sPvP, it was intended that way. Do you play DotA for ‘progress’?

Over a year later, and GW2 is...

A re-released GW1 with shinier graphics and a full team with passion behind it.

Not sure if that would sell to be honest.

To me it’s like releasing Pokemon Red in 3D, gane was good but not really that amazing that people will want to play it over what’s in the market.
