Diminishing returns.

-Snip-

The above plus RNG are the two(2) biggest factors in loot dropping, and diminishing returns was used in GW1 as well, so it seems to be one of the main ways A.net wants to use to get people to not constantly repeat the same content over and over. Just in case you don’t know what diminishing returns is, it’s the concept of the rewards scaling down every time you do the same thing over and over and over, usually by a small percentage, but it accumulates over time. If they kept the GW1 concept it would get to the point where you would get NO drops from mobs, absolutely nothing(and I know this for a fact because I wanted to test it, picked an area an repeatedly killed the mobs, eventually not a single enemy dropped anything).

Like all the changes which did not make any sense…

Why there was a need to:
-Snip-.

-Remove a whole story line(my greatest fear).

-Snip-

I may have missed other things but the point is removing (or unnecessary changes) for existing content is never a good idea. I think there may have been bugs with some of the things that have been removed but why remove instead of fixing them? It give you the feel that something have been broken or it is unfinished now.

For the five millionth time, the Greatest Fear story line was not removed, but it’s missing because of a bug, however, with all the changes made to the sequencing of the PS, correcting the issue isn’t some simple task. Nor is going in and fixing any bug when most systems are interrelated…you know, you fix one thing and it causes something else to break…that is what happens with great complexity. Not saying that at some point they “might” have to scrap the Greatest Fear portion because they’re unable to correcting sequence it and find a fix, but right now there are still numerous bugs from the feature pack…and every time changes are made it just makes it that much harder to find and fix the bugs, especially with non-reproduceable ones.

However, I’ve noticed that it seems a lot of people around here don’t have any patience, as if the world is going to end tomorrow and they want everything fixed yesterday.

You’re forgetting one thing, the Sylvari as a race are only 20 years old, they didn’t exist before, and the Elder Dragons normally awaken one at a time with a 50 year span between Dragons awakening, hence why Primordus was the first at the end of GW1. It’s also been mentioned in ancient histories that the Elder Dragons are known to have awoken at least 2 others time before this…and that’s about all that is known about them.

You do realize that technically a ‘Full" server is not a full server, it’s an arbitrary number that has been set by A.net, it’s completely software related, as for the increase in data, the data that a particular account takes up is really quite miniscule, if not infinitely small to be insignificant.

We need more than just title/image when living story updates are coming months later
I understand you guys want to keep some surprise in the mix, but there’s definitely a middle ground between undersharing and oversharing, and we are not in the sweet spot there yet. An example of how to slightly build upon that picture, for instance. What kind of land are we going to encounter, is it jungle? More desert? Are there going to be some new enemies to face there? Is there a new world boss? Within the next several updates, will we find a new zone? Will there be more open world events integrated with the living story?

~snip~

I’d say from what you said here that the one picture did exactly what they wanted it do, generate a bunch of questions that you want answered, and how will those get answered? By you playing the content when it’s released…makes complete sense to me to entice the player base that way.

Black Lion Chests count as gambling?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Black Lion Chests are not gambling in both the legal and technical sense since you are guaranteed a payout, no if’s, and’s or buts about it. There shouldn’t or wouldn’t even be a discussion about this if people would common sense and simple logic, but I think that doesn’t exist in the world anymore.

While I agree it’s not gambling in the legal sense, the existence of a payout (or lack thereof) is not what defines gambling as an action; it’s the act of taking a chance for a desired outcome that makes something gambling.

Anyone who opens a BLC with no expectation of results is not gambling, but anyone who buys a pack (or packs) of keys with the hope of getting tickets, contracts, or any other items unique to BLCs is, by definition and common sense, gambling.

Yes, but the OP said *Black Lion Chests count as Gambling_, emphasis mine, so in this case, Black Lion Chests in of themselves do not count as gambling. The act of buying keys and hoping to get something good is gambling on the part of the key purchaser, but the chests themselves(which are virtual and contain virtual goods that belong to A.net) are not gambling. A minor distinction, but an accurate one._*

The writing is just plain bad. It can involve me as much as I want, but if it’s written like a young adult novel, I’m still not going to be interested.

Yes. Yes. Yes. The writing feels more like fan-fiction than legitimate GW2 lore. I completely hate it.

I disagree, none of what is happening now is new, it’s actually GW history repeating itself. I can see you going ‘huh?’ right about now…well, it’s simple, this isn’t the first time the Elder Dragons have risen now, is it? Therefore what we’re experiencing is past events in a current world context. The concept is hard to understand, I know…

That response has nothing to do with the problem we’re discussing. You’re talking plot line, we’re talking writing. There’s a difference.

Yes, I’m talking plot line, and without a plot line you have a jumbled story, which the OP says doesn’t exist or exists in only existential form, if at all, when what is really there is a broad brush stroked ‘story’ guided by the plot line. Many little details have been left out or left to the PC(players) imagination, which is extremely hard to do if you aren’t familiar with the lore/history. Always my opinion…I think a litmus test would be to take each zone and dissect it, does the zone have it’s own ‘plot line’, is that ‘plot line’ conveyed/helped along by the ‘story’ aka Hearts/DE’s and NPC’s conversations or lack there of. If after that analysis the ’story’d isn’t cohesive or meaty enough, then I can see the OP’s point, but just off the top of my head and from memory…I don’t see that problem.

I agree with the OP. I might not have phrased it that way, but leaps leave a lot to be desired.

Many is the time I have a targeted creature, use my 3 skill, and end up jumping off a cliff, instead of toward my target.

Then I can almost guarantee that what you thought you had targeted is not really what you had targeted, or it changed targets just before using the skill(I’ve had this happen to me, and only realized it after thinking the skill wasn’t working properly and watching which creature I had targeted, it’s also possible that this is a hit or miss bug and hard to track down).

The problem is that a lot of stuff was thrown around to generate hype. Stuff like : Precursor Crafting, Fractal Leaderboards, new legendary weapons and other legendary types etc.

These are things that players care a lot about and as a result when nothing else was heard on this front and all these were kinda left to disappear into thin air with no news players got a bit doubtful.

~snip~

Here’s my take, those two examples were mentioned in 2013, it’s now almost the end of 2014 and there hasn’t been an announcement that they are NOT working on them, which to me means they are still working on them and are just having difficulty getting them to work as they would like, but that’s just a supposition and my personal opinion is I don’t really care about getting a lot of advanced information.

As for a GW2 being a grind, I have news for him, a grind is when you have to repeat the exact same ‘quest’ and/or ‘event over and over ad infinitum to gain levels, at least that’s grind in it’s basic form…something that GW2 doesn’t come close to…unless you chose to play it that way. However, name core content that was removed and that is ACTUALLY missed.
Core content that was changed during the NPE update, this core content wasn’t removed, only changed, which as previously stated they are allowed to do.

The “My greatest Fear” section was removed from the core content, and it is missed. It may be that it’s written in the T&Cs that AreanNet can change content in the game (and it’s pretty important that they do), but just because they do, it doesn’t make them immune from critique to what they do. By equal measure, just because content is added with no additional fee in a majority of circumstances, that doesn’t absolve it from scrutiny either.

~snup~.

Technically you are incorrect, it wasn’t removed, it’s a bug and they’ve stated that several times, however, it’s proving difficult to track down, correct it and get the stories in the correct order/location and functioning properly…unless they’ve changed their minds(which is certainly their right, it’s their game).

IF they’ve changed their minds and aren’t going to try and fix it, then I stand corrected.

The rebuilding of Lion's Arch

in Living World

Posted by: Zaklex.6308

Zaklex.6308

Consider this, in any rebuilding of a destroyed area/city, what do you start with…the infrastructure…so the first things that you would/should be seeing rebuilt are the bridges/roads/walkways, sewer system if damaged, etc. Second, the next thing should be necessary projects for allowing the inhabitants to return, this would be markets, etc.(especially since everyone is practically living in refugee areas that are outside of LA). Residential should be next with the final bit the assthetics(parks and such if they exist.) At least that’s in theory, with it having been started by pirates and now an all-comers cosmopolitan city, who knows what kind of politics(read corruption) is taking place.

Of course, you could also take this to the extreme and have the players help gather the necessary resources for the rebuilding with insanely epic resource gathering short time events. I won’t elaborate for fear of the backlash, unless there is demand for it.

The only reason why people hated Togo, Mhenlo, and Rurik were due to mechanics – them running off and dying, forcing the party to restart the entire mission.

The hate on Kormir, however, comes from the story, not (entirely or mostly) the mechanics.

You are wrong.

Instead of typing 10 paragraphs…

Fighting for your life and fate of the world only to look back and see dingbat Kormir twirling her hair.
this

~snip~

Certainly more than simple mechanics.

If you’re defending Kormir and Trahearne then thank god you do not write for Anet.

Color me lucky then, because I almost always managed to get Kormir to fight with me, with the exception of the missions on Istan.

Same with Trahearne, and I actually don’t mind the monotone so much, it fits his personality.

However, this is entirely off topic and has almost nothing to do with potentially improving the story telling in GW2.

gw2 morality

just did this hear that went against everything i believe in :/

Its the one in iron marches where you “motivate” prisoners by whipping them and the heart guy says you can whip them and fight them if they fight back but don’t kill them “because we aren’t sadists.”

I feel it’s much more sadistic to keep someone alive in chains and work them endlessly by whip rather than to just kill them :S

I see we have a lot of misinformed people. First off, the Charr prisoners are CRIMINALS, not necessarily Gladium or Flame Legion, but common, or rather, uncommon criminals. Second, if you watch closely you do not whip them directly, but crack the whip AT them, this is not a moral issue, liken to the old chain gangs of the American justice system, which some believe we should bring back(and in some areas of the country they have, and found that it works wonderfully, but that’s off topic).

I got new for all of you, unless something drastic changes, you’ll probably see the other 4 dragons before you see either Cantha or Elona, if you ever see them again(unless maybe GW3 and GW4). As for the Deep Sea Dragon, it’s location is already in the existing Tyrian world, just look at the bottom left corner(aka SouthWestern portion) of the main map below the ring of fire…that sea is where the deep sea dragon resides.

as long as they keep the servers up, fine by me. servers need maintenance you know. rent/electricity/salary etc.

You’re partially correct on this one, with the exception of rent, unless they’ve moved from the NCSoft data centers that house GW1; the servers are ‘owned’ by NCSoft, not rented, under a contract that allows for continual upgrade as newer software/hardware comes available. Therefore server cost is reduced considerably, now if they’ve moved out of the NCSoft Datacenters, then yes, they would be paying rent.

If anyone would bother to read the CDI for Guilds and/or Guild Halls, “Guild Raids” have been mentioned at least 3 times that I know of(and no, I’m not going to look up the posts and link them), with that being said. I’d almost bet than any “raid” content that MIGHT be added to GW2 will be for Guilds to access through a Guild Hall and not accessible to everyone that just plays the PvE world. That’s my nickels worth.

Play how you want in GW2 didn’t mean every build would be viable or good if the player was skilled.

It meant you could do any activity in the game and still have access to the best statistical gear.

It had nothing to do with builds.

I thought it meant I could level by dancing for cows all day, silly me.

. . . also, far as I can tell every build is viable and playable in PvE due to how remarkably simple enemy AI is over much of the world. I mean, if my undergeared Engineer can still handle things without knowing what the heck he’s doing . . .

Well as long as dungeons are considered part of PvE then technically No. You see if you go into a dungeon with any “crap” build all you have done is increase the work your teammates have to do aka being carried.
e.g. Mace shield guardian specd for healing(not support or control). He would argue he keeps the party alive.

To say your undergeared Engineer can still handle things without knowing what the heck he is doing to me means that 1. Open world. 2. Open World. 3. Open World. 4. If Dungeons you were carried so well you didnt even notice.

And that is why when playing with “newbs” I always stand back and let the mobs slaughter them first. Then explain what happened, what Im going to do, and why im doing it.

Dont want them thinking just anything is acceptable. Thats like saying just anyone can play a sport well. I can tell you I may be 6ft tall but put a basketball in my hand and I will be carried nonstop. Infact it would be wise of them not to throw the ball to me as I love to travel.

I’d snip your post, but I don’t want to waste my time as it appears you aren’t aware of A.nets design philosophy: which is that all builds should be viable . That’s how the game was designed, so that all builds for all classes using what ever weapons would be viable in the PvE world, and that includes dungeons, now is that the case? That’s a subjective matter that only each person can answer, so whether it takes one build 30 seconds to kill something vs another that might take 10 minutes(and extreme example but necessary to prove my point), it’s still a viable build.

What constitutes a viable build? To put it simply it only needs to survive and be able to kill mobs, that’s the basis of a viable build in PvE….nothing more, nothing less.

Remove Champion Bags!

I have a better solution, create an event, somewhere in an out of the way area, but in a high level zone specifically for those that want to farm Champion bags, it could even be an event that restarts sooner with failure. I’m thinking a 30 minute timer on failure, 90 minutes on success, the event spawns a minimum of 10 Super Champions(lvl 90)…and then you can keep the Champion Bags in the game. It would satisfy the Champion farmers by allowing them to have an event all their own, and they could then leave all the other events alone.

Flip that. More rewards for success. Still want to keep people from just killing 90% of the champs and sitting around until the event fails.

I agree, but what I was proposing was also a bit of sarcasm, however, if you read my statement again, the entire point of an event such as the one I described is to fail, not to succeed. Granted it would be better to have superior rewards for succeeding rather than failing, it’s not the event rewards that the Champ Farmers are after, it’s the bags that the Champs themselves drop. Improving the rewards from successful completion of an event still doesn’t take away the demand to get the bags from the Champs. I’ll illustrate my point using the Blix event before it was fixed with a longer timer between starts after failure. On average you could spawn anywhere from 6 – 8 Champs during Blix, if you managed to tag all of the spawned Champs that was lot of bags, and if they event kept failing and starting within a minute, you could conceivably obtain, let’s be concervative and say 30 Champ bags in an hour(and I know that’s a low ball number). Now, to even equal that amount of loot for a successful completion, imagine the amount of rewards that would have to be given, not withstanding that most of the loot from Champ bags is not always that great. That is the conundrum that is faced by A.net, can it be resolved, sure, but it would take thinking outside the box, and I think a combination of things would be most effective.

From the work done since launch, we know they have :
- a LS team

We know they don’t have :
- a dungeon team
- a class design team
- a balance team
- a www/pvp team
- a bug hunting team

—snip—

Let me correct you here, they have 4(four) LS teams, that is necessary to cover the every 2 week release schedule, which can be interrupted at any time to allow said teams to work on bigger LS releases. You need overlap with different teams working on content quite a bit ahead of time.

They do have a WvW/PvP team, they also handle balance issues, that’s Chaps department.

You do not know they don’t have:

- a class design team
- a bug hunting team

Bugs are most likely handled by the team that designed and implemented a specific piece of content or event, etc.. That’s only logical to have to people that developed it to fix it, at least without proper documentation of said processes, just like in any good programming.
