I can vouch for CCleaner. Very good program. It doesn’t scan deep in the registry and can back up any changes made, which can easily be added back into the registry – although I’ve never needed to do that.

I’ve been using it for years.

The person you quoted gave sound advice, it is done to ensure that static does not damage components.

When repairing hardware, ensure an anti-static process is used and wiki that info if desired (tho I don’t use an ant-static mat to work on.)

A grounded wrist strap works best for that. Also, the part I quoted makes no sense at all.

I haven’t checked, but I don’t believe GW has any “required” registry entries, so it really shouldn’t matter where you put it.

It sounds like some security/firewall software is interfering with the updates.

Hook up a known working PSU and using a non-magnetic screwdriver, rub it over the case hookups on the MB itself. If it squeals, the board is good. If nothing happens your board is dead.

Uhhhh…what?

The normal way is to shake a package of frozen chicken over the motherboard and listen for the ID ten T error sound.

None of that is necessary. You can simply copy Guild Wars 2 to wherever you want; then you can right-click GW2.exe and create a desktop shortcut.

Mine is located on my D drive (same with all my other games). In my case, the actual location is:

Well, personally I think you shouldn’t be building or working on computers.

However, if you insist on doing so – save up your money and build a new one. Most likely your CPU, RAM and everything else is fine – but there is no way to know that without testing them.

Your graphics “card” is failing; have the laptop replaced since it’s under warranty. It’s a common problem on many Dells and Alienware. This is why BGA mounted chips are a terrible engineering design (in my opinion).

Hmmm ok, but how come it was working for half a week on the discrete graphics at first?

It doesn’t matter. Electronics can have very unusual failures.

I have been repairing electronics and computers for over 30 years. The very first thing I would do would be to substitute a known working monitor in place of the old one.

Thanks for the reply We tried the monitor on another pc and strangely enough it only works on that PC’s integrated graphics but not discrete. The monitor also works perfectly fine on his laptop too. Btw whats rma?

It looks like your answer is right there. Sometimes monitors fail in such a way that they cannot switch to higher resolution graphics modes.

Also, he is leaving out one of the steps in troubleshooting this problem – try another monitor!

I realize that you said he doesn’t have one, but I’m willing to bet he could borrow one or (at the very least) bring his PC to a shop. It takes no time at all to test that and no repair shop (that’s any good) will charge for that.

I don’t like it (I have a Logitech G15). I did look up their policy before I started playing and I’m glad I did. I won’t be using macros unless the official policy changes.

the game runs flawless…during PvE but then you enter a large scaled DE or WvWvW and you’ll see a slideshow.

my complain is, such thing as massive battles, sieges, etc should never be in a game in the first place, if the technology isn’t ready, which obviously is not the case now.

You are wrong.

I used to play Wow on a single-core PC with 1 gig RAM and a Geforce 6800. I did 40 man raids. I got into many South Shore vs. Tarren Mill battles that often had 50+ players of each faction.

Yeah, MY framerate on THAT machine dropped to 30 FPS or so, but the game still ran smooth with no noticeable lag. I had friends with much more powerful PC’s that could maintain 60 FPS under ANY situation.

This game should be capable of the same — especially on the PC specs I’m seeing here.

To add to Lexandro’s information:

I repair computers (and electronics). One thing I’ve seen a lot of in the past 6 months or so is BOOTKIT infections. Please people look that one up.

This type of infection writes to the MBR (master boot record) of the hard drive once it has been ran on the system. It’s a double-edge sword in that, if you fix the MBR but don’t remove the infection, the MBR gets re-infected.

Often, the ONLY indication that you have this type of infection is strange crashes and (sometimes) high memory usage. Since the bootkit takes over the system BEFORE the OS loads, it hides from most virus scanners. They can be difficult to detect and difficult to remove.

Don’t dismiss this as “not on my system” if you are not 100% sure. It never hurts to check.

I’m glad you got things working.

However, the issues you describe should not happen with a STABLE PC and properly working internet.

If a file is getting corrupted, you have one (or more) of these problems:

1) Hardware problem.
2) Virus/rootkit infection.
3) Software conflict (possible, but this should NOT cause file corruption).
4) Internet/network/ISP issues (when downloading said file).

I’ve been researching Nvidia driver issues a bit and looking at the logs everyone posts about these crashes. There appears to be some kind of bug (memory leak?) in the game client that doesn’t “like” certain Nvidia GTX graphics drivers.

If you want to try them, here are links to older Nvidia GTX drivers (think they only go up to GTX590). First link is for 32 bit Vista/7. Second link is for 64 bit Vista/7:

Your crashing looks like it’s caused by A) something wrong with Windows or B ) some type of virus infection:

Crash <—*
Exception: c0000005
Memory at address 00000001 could not be read
App: Gw2.exe
Pid: 1860

Uptime: 0 days 0:56:32
Flags: 0

The WINMM.dll file appears to be the module that is crashing the game. It may be corrupt, infected or related to something that’s running in the background causing the crash.

You should start with a clean boot:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796

Another thing I noticed, is that you are using ridiculous amounts of memory. Unless you are doing some intensive video editing (or something) at the same time as gaming; something is wrong here:

—> System Memory <—
Physical: 4334MB/ 7658MB 56%
Paged: 10897MB/15315MB 71%
Virtual: 2833MB/ 4095MB 69%

CommitLimit: 15315MB
CommitPeak: 4698MB
SystemCache: 4283MB
HandleCount: 34274
ProcessCount: 102
ThreadCount: 1235

Physical RAM is at 4 gig used and your page file is at 10 gig usage. What the game is using looks normal by itself; but something is using huge amounts of memory.

Press CTL-ALT-DEL. Start task manager. Go to the Processes tab.

Those are some of the programs that are running in the background. Each instance of Service Host (SVCHOST) usually handles several more processes, so there is more running than what you see there.

A program (most often anti-virus) is updating or popping up a screen message which causes the game to minimize (unless you are accidentally hitting the ‘Windows’ key).

It is NOT the game.

Take it apart again. Make sure you didn’t accidentally clog the heatsinks or fans with dust. Make sure the fans spin freely.

85 to 89c is a lot hotter than I would expect and indicates a problem.

I repaired a laptop with a very high temperature issue a while back. Cleaning and remounting the CPU/GPU heatsink (using Arctic Silver) didn’t resolve the issue. I suspected that the heat pipe was bad so I replaced the heatsink – problem solved.

Your error is related to RTSSHooks.dll.

Taken from the GW2 FAQ:

“Part 5.5 c0000005 crash
This crash is often due to driver issues, overlays interfering like mumble or afterburner and hardware problem with the GPU.

Try

Updating drivers or maybe even rolling back to previous version.
Disable overlays.
Underclocking GPU
Change graphic settings in Radeon Cataylst or Nvidia control panel.
Update/repair directx in some cases helps.
Try unplugging all USB peripherals devices like (Logitech USB headset) see thread

The filename in the “Module” often gives a clue where the crash is occurring.
Example:

Module: RTSSHooks.dll

Nvidia driver 310.70, Updating to it will cause c0000005 RTSSHooks.dll crashes when MSI Afterburner v2.3.0 overlay is enabled prior to loading gw2 map.

Work around is to disable overlay prior to entering gw2 (you can enable it back after loading in) or Enable “compatibility with modified Direct 3D runtime libraries” with the OSD server properties."

You have a variety of crashes in the log dating back to 9/1/2012. Some are ‘out of memory’, one looks like it’s related to ESET Nod Antivirus and a few others look like graphics card/driver. One or two show disk read errors.

There’s definitely a hardware stability issue or a virus/rootkit infection. Bad RAM can cause all of the above issues – after checking for infections, I would start there.

I have been able to successfully find and remove rootkits with TDSSkiller, which is available here:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/tdsskiller/

Be very careful using that program. I have not had any problems with it; however, when repairing the MBR (master boot record) there is always a chance that it will fail and you will no longer be able to boot your computer. This isn’t a big problem if you happen to have a Windows XP cd.

Post back if you find a rootkit infection and we can figure out where to go from there.

It’s certainly possible. However, if it is a game bug, I would expect to have to duplicate the same actions every time to cause the crash.

GW2 doesn’t crash at all on my (ancient) gaming system. Of course, that doesn’t rule out a game bug. Generally though; most of the time, a “hard freeze” is a hardware problem or a buggy hardware driver. Windows can usually recover from software crashes.

Since SSD’s are still relatively a newer hardware device, I would start looking for SSD driver issues.

Your crash appears to be hardware related – it looks like a video card problem; possibly temperature related. Try lowering your graphics settings in game (less stress on the card).

Another thing you could try is removing and re-seating your video card. That tends to scrape the connections and will often correct “bad” slot-to-card connections.

It’s also a good idea to check out your temps. You can get (free) Hardware Monitor here:

http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html
