I am sure that ArenaNet knows how to make proper expansions:
- http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Guild_Wars_Nightfall
- http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Guild_Wars_Eye_of_the_North
In the original Guild Wars, there’s an equivalent Living stories:
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Guild_Wars_Beyond
And of course, the important question is whether they’ll bring something of similar quality to GW2.
I wasn’t questioning whether or not they had the ability to release an expansion but whether or not they will as Living Story is intended to serve as a method of delivering content similar to an expansion. But point of contention is that I don’t personally feel that it’s working.
In an effort to be more constructive, I thought I would offer my hopes for Season 2 LS. I hope that Season 2 incorporates content that would normally be implemented during an expansion into each release.
New Zones
Why not add a new zone or two with a few of the releases until we have some set number of new areas. Perhaps make it so we’re part of an expedition into Maguuma, researching the effects Scarlet had on the world.
New Dungeons
I have AC, SE and CoF tokens spewing out of my ears. Why not give us a few new dungeons to explore. Perhaps even go between adding new dungeons and new zones in each release. A new dungeon in the shiverpeaks to meet with the Dwarves who are going through issues would be neat. A dungeon that deals with the Tengu and their concerns would be fun as well.
New Weapons/Armor Sets acquirable through the game and not USD
I’d love some weapons and armor sets that were attainable that I actually felt like I earned them. I get that we’ve got new armor sets and weapons through the Black Lion Cash Shop but it’s so hollow. Seeing another thief in all Magitech, or another Mesmer with Kasmeer’s staff doesn’t tell me they’re awesome, it tells me the have disposable income.
Now that season 1 of the Living Story has completed, I find myself wondering how the “Living World/2 week release window substituting as Expansion” bit is working. I admit, I really liked the Living World. It effectively kept me coming back to the game and I did as many of the meta events as I could.
However, looking back, the amount of permanent, lasting content is staggeringly low. With the exception of TA Aether, we have no new dungeons. We have only one new set of armor (ascended). We have the champ weapons, but no new legendaries, and frankly the named exotics aren’t “new” or “interesting” anymore as it’s been, what a year since they came out. The few new world bosses we’ve received are so difficult that only huge organized groups like TTS can regularly participate in them. And only 1 new zone that hardly anyone ever goes to.
Perhaps what I’m trying to say is that while I really quite loved the story of the Living Story, and the temporary content was mildly entertaining, my overall satisfaction with playing the game has steadily gone down. I find myself wandering aimlessly and doing whatever dungeon someone in guild chat randomly needs. I’ve recently jumped into PvP and am enjoying it, but I desperately want something new. I hope the feature build is as massive and interesting as ANet seems to be suggesting. But after 1.5 years of the same hype for every release, it’s getting harder and harder to believe anything of value other then a few balance things here and there are coming.
Sorry, I don’t mean to be a bummer. I love this game and want it to succeed, I just hope there will be more game to actually play soon. Am I alone in feeling like this? What your thoughts on new content? What have you found to keep you occupied?

I’m not sure if this was suggested yet or not, but what if we had the option to play fractals in a sort “infinite dungeon” mode? Instead of the traditional 3 fractals 1 boss, there was the option to play as many fractals as your team could handle, each with an increasing reward.
Multiple Ways to Pull off “Infinite Dungeon” Mode!
Option 1 Choose your starting fractal level, for example Level 10, then after each fractal you beat, it goes up 1 fractal level difficulty. This could make it especially interesting if you add random instabilities. This way, you could potentially go up forever and the further you go, the harder the challenge, but the more the reward!Option 2 Instead of it going up in difficulty after each fractal, they could go up after every 4 (after each boss fractal). This could even be integrated into the current way fractals work. After you beat the boss you are given the option of going back to the observatory or continuing on.
Option 3 BOSS MODE! All fractals are boss fractals! They get harder the more you fight and will have different instabilties! The higher you go the worse it gets! New instabilities like… Mai suddenly showing up during the Maw fight! Maw tentacles showing up during the Mai fight! And more!
Just an idea, but it would be a fun way to change it up a little bit and potentially add a way to integrate the leaderboards; track how far your team made it.
Option 2 is already implemented. But noone has the time for that. When you finish a run the difficulty level goes up 1 and you are ported to the observatory. You can simply start a second run if you wish.
Ahhh kitten , that’s right. I forgot it did that haha. I guess the difference would be that you could have the option in the fractal itself to just continue to the next set of fractals or go back to the observatory.
EDIT- Really?! That’s censored? It wasn’t even a swear word. Not even a little. LOL that’s just bizarre.

Some more ideas for new fight mechanics:
I’d love for a moving fight where you had to “chase” an enemy . This could be either on foot or on some kind of vehicle where you would alternate between DPSing the boss down, and then using ranged attacks to put “obstacles” of some kind in it’s path to either knock it down or daze it. (Picture an airship chase through a canyon and you’re having to shoot down boulders to daze or slow down it down)
Or what if it’s the other way around, where a huge enemy is chasing you down a hill where you have to fight it occasionally to slow it down then run like crazy to get out of it’s way. Example: A reverse Cliffside fractal, where the giant statue dude is actually trying to attack you and you’re running up the cliff trying to lash him to the cliff. Another example: Picture the mechanical spider fight in the beginning of FFVIII.
In regard to topics I would like to see (if that’s ok):
- Continued discussion about lore in fractals.
- Suggested scenarios (boss, encounter and level design) based on current mechanics and systems in fractals.
- Anything else that takes your fancy.I am pretty well versed in all of your thoughts around rolling, rewards and leader boards now.
Chris
Scenario Ideas
I’d love to see some more bizarre fractals that show “possible universes” that we could play through. For example, a “What-if Zhaitan won” scenario wherein you fight your way through Lion’s Arch, killing hordes of zombies and zombie versions of popular NPCs. Three boss fights with member’s of Destiny’s Edge and Trahearne as the final boss.
Then there’s the obvious kralkatorrik fight wherein we help Destiny’s Edge fight through waves of kralkatorrik minions, lieutenants and finally Krakatorrik himself wherin Snaff sacrifices himself so we can escape. That would be great to see in-game.
Honestly, any chance to give the devs a chance to show us re-designed versions of some existing maps would be welcome. Possible examples: Arah, or any part of Orr during the Charr invasion itself. Fighting as the Charr during the Searing, or perhaps shortly after with a boss fight against King Adelbern.
Level Design Ideas
I enjoyed the first airship section of the Arah Story path where you have to fight off the enemies dropping onto your ship, shield against the huge giants and blast the dragons out of the sky. That was a lot of fun, I’d love to see more fights along those lines where some members of the team have to run defense in some fashion while the reason of the team fends of hoardes of enemies or has to take down a boss using a method other then JUST tank n’ spank.
Compromise to giving players a choice between random and choosing the next fractal: Why not make the choice of the next fractal one of three randomly selected fractals. This way you still have at least a somewhat randomized group of fractals while still giving players a choice.
You could always alter the rewards so that choosing “random” while have an increased reward (more gold, karma, etc) as opposed to manually choosing the next fractal.
Back on randomness/replayability/rewards: I think the intent has always been to make the Fractals a very replayable experience by using random to create semi-unique iterations through the content. But the extrinsic reward motivators work to the contrary, making random unfavorable for optimal gain.
I’d like to see more speculation on middle ground solutions which both add meaningful variety to the Fractals without forcing players to feel like they’re trudging through non-optimal reward paths.
Also, this is all just speculation. I’m not advocating or declaring an official re-work of any system here. Just exploring possibilities for the evolution of this and future content.
What if you gave us the option to choose a random fractal or choose a specific one? At the end of each fractal, in addition to the window that asks “Are you ready to continue?” it also gives you the chance to choose the next fractal, making one of the options “Random”.
You could even integrate the leaderboard system by turning fractals into a sort of race. There could be a timer that starts when everyone zones into the fractal, and pauses once you kill the last boss in each fractal. The leaderboard would have the top team times for each fractal level.
I’m super late to this CDI, but figured I toss in a crazy idea.
Proposal Overview
Integrate Fractals with the Living Story updates by creating small, possibly temporary fractals relevant to the Living Story itself. A new form of Fractal.
Goal of Proposal
Give new purpose to fractals
Give insight into the thinking behind some of our foes/allies in dark times
Proposal Functionality
The idea is this: Create Fractals that are related to whatever is going on in the current Living Story. For example, what if we were given the chance to play through an important moment in our new allies’ past. See when Rox’s partner was killed, a moment of Braham kicking kitten with Eir and Knut Whitebeard. Or perhaps let us play as Scarlet underlings and get some insight into her insanity and see some behind the scenes of how/why she did some of the things she did.
*Another possibility: Make Fractal instability’s “leak” into the real world in a method similar to the Halloween “door” events. We could have fractal portals pop up on normal maps that you could then go on a hunt for and then tackle something related to that area. For example: There could be one in Kessex Hills that allows you to replay a portion of the Tower of Nightmares. Or one in Cursed Shore that allows us to relive the horror that was the Charr attack on Arah that resulted in the sinking of Orr. (something I’ve always wanted to see)
Associated Risks
-Potentially time consuming
-Requires more manpower then is currently allotted to Living Story updates.
Okay so, do women in Tyria simply have no shame whatsoever? Is that what I’m supposed to take away from the armor designs? I mean, come on. Don’t get me wrong, I love boobs as much as the next guy but Mother of Balthazar, there is almost nothing covering the female torso whatsoever.
I like the set, overall, but is it too much to ask for an armor set with at least some level of modesty? I’m seriously asking, is that something we could have at some point? Armor that actually… I don’t know, that would actually serve as armor and provide some level of protection to the general torso area.
I made a walkthrough video of Lion’s Arch to serve as a sort of memorial to the great city that once was. Whether or not we’ll ever see it back to normal, I don’t know, but I thought I better take this chance to preserve whatever I could in this video.
Let me know what you think.
Heh, I miss DR. While [RegA] may have moved to Dragonbrand, I’d love to guest over and bid it farewell one last time. I won’t be able to get on until around 8PM PST tonight, but I’ll be there.
With these new world bosses having such exceptionally high difficulties, it seems like there are a ridiculous amount of complaint posts about how difficult they are and even devs talking about how they didn’t see this coming or they’ll look into it next time.
Personally, I agree that the Wurm boss is rather extreme on the difficulty curve, but hopefully that will get better with time. I enjoy the Marionette fight, in general, but it’s immensely frustrating that I’ve done the fight probably 2 dozen times and haven’t beaten it once.
Idea: Invite Only Pre-Release Beta Server
It seems to like the major problem with these fights is that A-Net is unable to predict just exactly how servers are going to react or handle these fights in the real world. So why not change that?
How about one week before any major world bosses are released, you pick one random server (and I mean random, not just T1 or T2 servers. Blackgate, JQ and SoR are going to beat this stuff just by sheer numbers. Just because Devona’s Rest is a lower tier server doesn’t mean they don’t deserve to enjoy some PvE content as well) and that one server will be the beta server for a week. Make some behind the scenes requirement that the player will have to have been on that server for at least a month beforehand (so no one can just server hop).
This would allow you to see how the actual players handles the encounters before they’re released to everyone and fine tune the fights so they’re exactly where they need to be.
When I’m downed my instinct is to press all of the buttons as fast as I can
It might be a good idea to read the description of your skills so you know what they each do. GW2 isn’t the kind of game where mashing buttons really works.
I think if all they add is new zones, then I would prefer them to be lvl 80 zones. I’m not sure how they could keep a zone interesting for the majority of the population if it’s a lower level. Unless, they pair the new zone release with new races. They new zones for all ranges of levels would be great. Tengu are one obvious choice as their homelands are literally between already established zones with a range of levels.
While unlikely, I would love it if we got another race that was actually one of the Elder races. Like The Forgotten (opening up the Crystal Desert and allowing us to interact with Glint and possibly fight Kralikatorik) or The Mursaat, or one of the Seers! Heck, I wouldn’t mind playing a Jotun!
For me, it’s a close bet between Guardian and Elementalist. The Guardian blue flames and bubbles look seriously rad, pair that with being a Charr Guardian, and it’s an admittedly intimidating look.
Elementalist abilities are also rad looking. And you have a huge range of AoE abilities. Lots of a really awesome looking abilities.
I’m reasonably confident that with lobbing style projectiles (fire, water) the animation will try to lead the target so it’ll appear to connect. Whereas straight shooting projectiles (rifle, earth bullets, etc) just fly straight and will connect regardless.
There’s no difference in their chances to hit though. If the target dodge rolls or is out of range then it’ll miss, but it’ll still do it’s best to land as close to them as it can reach.
TL;DR – They’re just animations. The “to-hit” chance is exactly the same.
A centaur comes home after a long day of pillaging and trodding about only to find his wife cheating on him with his best friend. He drops his pack and says “What is Tamini’ing of this?!”
A lot of the ideas boiled down into variations of one of these two options, and really both have a lot of cool concepts and ideas. Can folks think of anything else that’s a bit more outside the box for something bigger?
Alright, I will admit that I’ve fallen woefully behind on this thread, so I want preface this with an apology if something like this has already been suggested.
Daily/Monthly Quests That Matter
What if our Daily/Monthly achievement quests were no longer just a random assortment of quests, but now were specific to your character’s race and/or profession? Perhaps the first time you do it, you meet your race or profession specific tutor who will teach you how to better yourself “unlock more abilities”. Then, everyday you had a new set of quests that you had to do that were specific to your profession and quests you had done in the past. These could even tie into your monthly quest.
Examples of Profession Specific Daily Quests
Let’s say your an elementalist: Perhaps your first task would be to “Better familiarize yourself with the Elements”. So each day you have element specific daily quests. For Fire attunement it could be things like “Kill X enemies without switching from Fire Attunement”, “Kill X fire elementals”, “Kill X enemies in a fiery zone (Fireheart Rise, Blazeridge Steppes, etc)”.
Rinse, Repeat for each of the 4 attunements. Then it progress so now you have harder tests like, killing a veteran on your own while attuning to only one or two attunements. Underwater fighting, killing Vets, killing Champs, etc. It could even lead up to eventually killing certain World Bosses. Then once you’ve “finished” your “training”, a new form of Profession-specific Mastery is unlocked.
Ideas for Profession Mastery
This is where I get fuzzy because I don’t know what is technically possible or would balanced. I like the idea of locking some skills in a way similar to GW1, where you have to kill a certain enemy in the world to learn a certain skill. Again referring to elementalist some new skill unlock ideas of mine:
- A Fire Tornado skill by killing the Fire Elemental
- Freeze Breath, or AOE Ice Blast from JoJo
- AOE Tsunami Push Back from Teq
Anyway, I hope all that makes sense. Basically, I think it would be nice to pair the mastery with something most people do already (daily quests) as a way to unlock something down the road.
(edited by adubb.2453)
To be clear you guys and girls don’t have to pick the ones I put forward. I was just contributing to the thread with what I would like to see as a player. You can pick an ideas from the thread. Just wanted to make that clear.
Chris
I think most of us understood that we didn’t have to pick from your top three. I just think that the Sociopolitical Diversification as a means of progression holds a lot of weight. Even before you mentioned it earlier today, we had been talking about in different ways for better part of the last two days.
Basically, we’re with you! I know the CDI doesn’t lead directly to development simply because we want it to, but dangit man get on it! LOL!
What do we want?
Sociopolitical Diversification!
When do we want it?
Now!… Or, you know, when you can get to it.
My number one would also have to be Sociopolitical Diversification. As I’m sure my previous posts have made clear, I really like the idea of diving back into the various Factions around Tyria. I think using the existing factions and perhaps even creating new ones is a great vehicle for giving new/updated rewards (new armor, new ways to get existing armor/weapons, etc), for expanding on the existing lore, for making the world seem more “alive” and spread the population out from places other then LA.
Player/Guild housing
I love the idea of getting to choose where the physical entrance to guild housing would be. Give us a reason to go to places other then LA. Have an entrance in Black Citadel, Divinity’s Reach and Hoelbrek. And along with this, make the chat channel span all 4 major cities, instead of having just individual ones.
Ultimately, this is my number 1 choice because, from my perspective, it seems like the best vehicle to introduce new content, satisfy those who want more expansion with existing lore and diversifies player’s perceived and actual roles in the world of Tyria.
(edited by adubb.2453)
I’m wondering, the living story gets worse everytime
No it doesn’t. Just because Scarlet isn’t the most interesting villian doesn’t mean everything in the Living Story updates are bad. They add flavor to the game and new events. People were farming that tower up until the day it collapsed. If it were that bad, no one would even bother after the first day or two.
features which should be within the game gets sold for the price of an expansion
This is also patently false. Unless you know of a game where they release expansions for $10. This is a free to play game. Certain compromises are made when creating this game. Servers cost money to run, and developers don’t work for cookies, they have to recoup that money somehow.
achievements and updates are exactly the same as last year
What are you talking about? There are hundreds of achievements, which ones are you referring to? The holiday themed achievements? You’re right, many of them are the same. But who cares? They’re still fun! If you’re talking about the rest of the achievements, I don’t know what to tell you. Try PvP, or WvW, there are a ton of achievements in each of those.
The likelihood of a fully featured expansion is unlikely to ever happen. But the chance of a substantial feature update with level cap increase, new maps, new race, etc are more likely coming soon. I think it would be a safe bet that we could see a substantial feature update coming shortly after season 1 of the Living Story ends. Which would be in a couple of months from now.
For now, enjoy what we have so far. There’s a lot of game to be enjoyed; if you find yourself bored with one aspect, try another. You might be surprised by how awesome this game is and just how much there is to do.
Well, last year they added one new zone and it’s completely deserted most of the time. many of the other zones are also very sparsely visited.
It takes a LOT of work to generate a zone’s worth of new content.. and the player base will be “done” with it inside a week, so it’s just not a good use of dev time.
I don’t know if that’s necessarily true. Southsun has quite a few people there as it’s quite good for farming. Also, Karka Queen is worth all the monies and karma and loots. In fact, thanks to world bosses, a lot of zones that would otherwise be empty see a lot of use.
So long as they put useful things in the new zones, I see no reason why we shouldn’t see new ones relatively soon. New world bosses, new champ farms, new armor sets, new heart quests, new orders to assist, new all kinds of things! I have no doubt we’ll see new zones, and look forward to it very much!
I’m not sure how I feel about mix and match, other than wanting it to be equal, none of this “heavy gets it all” stuff.
However, given the mesh issues, a solution would be to design skins that look like other weights but are designated for specific ones. We’ve seen that can be done with dragon bash helms, grenth hoods, and so on. The Aether light chest on men looks like a heavy vest.
That fits right in with all our requests for more and more and more skins.
That would be an easy way to address to at least partly address this. If some of the new skins were universal, like the dragon bash helms you mentioned. The game is invested in the three armor classes. The question is: did the developers make that investment just for the armor’s defense rating or for that as well as aesthetics?
Isaiah actually replied to my original post about mixing and matching armor sets and giving you a choice between types of armor for all classes. First of all, without a major rework of how armor is rendered, you quite literally can’t mix and match armor types. It simply doesn’t work. Secondly, he mentioned that giving all classes the ability to switch between all armor types runs the risk of diluting the purpose of having separate classes altogether.
Compromise
What if the choice was purely aesthetic? No stat buffs whatsoever, you could just wear whatever the heck you wanted to, as long as all your armor pieces were the same type.
Or Perhaps….
What if the bonuses were kept to a minimum? Or perhaps the pros/cons of each armor set were specific to each class. For example, a Guardian wearing heavy armor gets the best boost to armor, wearing Medium armor gives a 5% boost to movement speed but 5% less armor, and wearing Light armor increases healing power by 5% and movement speed by 5% but has 10% less armor then Heavy. And it could be different for every class. Instead of specific stats it could be certain class specific boosts. This would still keep each class distinct, but also opening up even more build flexibility and aesthetic choice.
I’m sitting on 85g right now. Most I’ve ever had at one time was somewhere around 350g. It’s actually not that hard to make gold in this game.
You can make a quick 6g everyday but just running AC 1,3 (1.75g each) and CoF 1,2 (1.25g each). Get an experienced group and you can do all 4 runs in about a little over an hour. Not to mention you’ll usually finish or come close to finishing most dailies just by doing that.
If you want even more, do some world bosses or champ farming. If you’re not there already, the Tarnished Coast Frostgorge farm is ridiculously fast and is basically running 24/7. Learn the route, and you’ll be rich.
My guild [RegA] just transferred from Devona’s Rest to Dragonbrand for this exact reason. The server felt empty and very few people were motivated to do anything. It’s so bad that the server struggles to pull together enough people to even take down Claw of Jormag. It was pitiful.
Transferring to Dragonbrand has been a dream come true for both PvE and WvW. Not to mention the overall change in attitude. It’s so refreshing to be on a server that’s fun to play on and can actually get things done.
Oh, and Polymock.
Seconded
1. New Dungeon Achievements I would love a new way to explore the dungeons we currently have, a way to make them more fun and give me a reason to go back and run dungeons that are done less frequently. Meta Dungeon Achievements. Each dungeon will have 10-20 quirky things to do/find/kill that award new achievement points. Things like killing the Ooze King/Queen in CoF. No player going down. Time trials. Finding a secret room. That kind of thing. Perhaps with a special skin or item specific to each dungeon once you finish so many of them.
2. New Non-Gem Store Armor Sets I love the idea of giving new life and new reasons to slay the world bosses. I’d love to see a way to either craft world boss specific armor or purchase them. Any number of ways to do this: new boss specific tokens/new crafting items (Shatter Scale, Shadow Behemoth dust, Jungle Wurm claw, etc) Either way, I feel like a lot of people are starting to all look the same. I’d love for some more variety.
3. New Heart Quests/Order Missions I want a reason other then Living Story to venture out into the world! Many people complain about how they don’t like the zerg mentality that occurs with the Living Story and forcing entire servers essentially into one map. Why not give us a real reason to venture outside of LA besides WvW, dungeons and world bosses? How about new heart quests that pop up once you’ve 100% completed a map? Or perhaps a MAP Heart that was a sort of map-wide quest to help someone there.
In conjunction with this we discussed incorporating the different Orders and having them give their own quests. I would include not just the Order of Whispers, Durmand Priory and Vigil in this but also The Pact and even the Seraphs. Perhaps even the different races!
In GW2 terms, let’s say that you’ve just found all the Points of Interest that relate to the Order of Whispers. As you get the last one, a notice pops up that you’ve gotten the Accolade and title of “Whispered Legend”. Anyone that calls up your badge list can see that you’ve earned this badge, even if you’re not wearing the title right that moment. Have you gone through AC several times, eventually beating a set of optional challenges such as limited/no party deaths before the end? Congratulations, here’s the “Crypt Cleaner” Accolade and badge, ready for all to see. Have you gone through ALL story mode dungeons with limited/no deaths? Congrats, here’s the “Effortless” Accolade for you!
I seriously love this idea! It’s an awesome way to refresh existing content without having to completely rework it. What if you paired this with rewards other then just titles?
New Dungeon Meta Achievements/Rewards
What if we had not only new titles, but also meta awards? Using AC as an example, you could have achievements like, “Hands off my ecoplasmic distillate!” where neither of the collectors is killed during the graveling fight in the lover’s crypt. But have something like 20 of these new meta achievements for each dungeon. Then, when you complete the meta for that dungeon you get a special reward specific to that dungeon.
Say for example, if you finish the AC meta you get a backpack skin that makes it appear as though you are a ghost and therefore have a faint blue, glowy particle effect around you. The CM gift could be a head armor skin that gives your character a Caudecus beard. SE could be a dredge mini. CoF could be lava footprints. Arah could be Zhaitan wings. (Just throwing stuff out there)
Fun Meta Achievement Ideas
AC – “And in this corner…” Get Kohler and the Cave Troll to fight each other.
Any Dungeon – “Can’t Touch This” Finish an entire path without any member of the party dying.
Any Dungeon – “The Destroyer” Slaughter all hostile enemies in your path.
CoE – “And Stay Down!” Knockdown Bjarl 5 times in 30 seconds.
CoF – “Stay Cool” Make it through an entire path without dying by fire.
On the subject of Voiced Events
Players don’t care about voiceovers for events. And they certainly don’t care about them for dungeons. In fact, players HATE voiceovers for dungeons, because a character has to speak for 10 god danged minutes about crap we don’t care about. It’s like in modern FPS games when your allies give you some useless information you don’t care, while waiting 20 minutes for the door to open. BLAH BLAH BLAH!
I know this post is a little less constructive, but I want to point out that voice overs do NOT provide more “immersion”. They are a stalling mechanism which halt player progress. Personally, I believe that is NOT fun!
BRING ON THE VOICELESS EVENTS!
As one of these “players” of which you speak, I would like to say that I actually like the voiceover work a lot and think it does add quite a lot to my immersion in the world. Granted, I do skip the voiceover story on dungeons now, but that’s because I’ve seen it a million times.
But anytime there’s new story or new things to listen to/watch, I WILL be watching it because it’s well done, well written, and adds to the world in a very material way.
devs,
this thread seems all over the place. there are a bunch of suggestions about content and qol features that don’t have anything to do with progressing our characters, so could you please clarify what you mean by “horizontal progression”?
thanks!
It’s open ended for this exact reason. They’re trying to get a pulse of what is important to the community as a whole in regards to horizontal progression. Note: Horizontal Progression is about flexibility; how your lvl 80 attains his cool looking thing vs how other lvl 80 got their cool looking thing. It’s about exploring new ways to explore the world in a way unrelated to higher stats, better gear, etc.
The very fact that there are so many different suggestions is a testament to how well this game is made already and just how many avenues of progression and different ways people can enjoy this game. That is a good thing. A very good thing. It’s why I love this game and am here to stay.
If you can make every Order quest without being of the Order, you destroy the purpose of these Order Quests that is to make you involved in your Order plans/duties/plots. So the answer is : Yes, you need to have joined an Order.
You join an Order with the level 30 quest, It’s not hard. If people don’t want to join an Order/make their Personal Story, It’s a way to motivate them.
It’s a way to make our choices meaningful on long term !Absolutely. If Order quests and/or progression is added (and I 100% agree they should be), then that progression/quest (and hence the rewards) should only be available to members of that Order. If that restriction is not put in place, there is really no point at all to doing the Order quests in the first place.
At most, I could see a handful of generic quests that can be done by anyone for any Order so that they can sort of introduce themselves to the player (perhaps run out of the recruiting camps in the major cities), but any actual advancement should not be open to players of another Order or no Order at all.
I don’t see why working with any Order is a problem by itself. Storyline-wise, The Pact banded the Orders together. Simply because Zhaitan has been defeated, doesn’t meant the Pact is dissolved. It simply tempered the blade that is Destiny’s Edge and The Pact. All of the Orders now work together for a common goal: Defending Tyria against the Elder Dragons. I see no reason why you couldn’t work with each of them towards that goal.
Granted, you do join a specific Order and they no doubt have their own missions they take care of. So there could be two different types of quests. Pact missions that could just be with one or possibly several Orders; and Order-specific missions that you get from your personal character’s Order.
I agree that if every time you set out to gain faction, it was done through substantial, non-grindy content, that would be great. What you’re describing sounds closer to a series of personal story missions. The problem is, I don’t see them coming out with enough content like this to keep it from getting boring. If you’re trying to attach it to the living story and not make it its own thing, then what about the actual living story release? Resources going into the Order missions would take away from that, and I think that would do a disservice to both.
Granted, that was a fairly complex series of missions, but it was just an example of what Factions could mean. It doesn’t have to be anywhere near that complicated. It could be as simple as adapting existing quests with the factions directly so there’s more incentive to actually go out into the world and do them, instead of huddling in LA, world bosses and Dungeons.
Ultimately, what I would like to see in the future is a reason to venture out into the existing world after I hit 80 and feel like I’m doing something that matters, in addition to just the Living Story. I remember when I first started playing, I was overwhelmed by the sheer amount of options I had! There was so much to do everywhere! But after you’ve finished map completion and have several 80s, the incentive to go out into other maps is diminished. Despite being beautiful just wander around in, I have no real reason to go into most of the lower levels maps.
Also, I genuinely love the idea behind the Living Story, and would like to see it expanded into things like this. There’s so much lore to be explored and yet has remained untouched thus far. A built in incentive to interact with the various Factions around the world seems like a decent place to start to do that.

These posts about wanting some kind of Faction reputation worry me. It’s one of the easiest things to turn into a grind, and it just doesn’t seem that interesting. There are far more substantial things the devs can implement for horizontal progression than faction rep. Besides, a rank system within the factions doesn’t exactly work too well considering we’re the commander of the Pact in the story anyway.
If a rep system is ever implemented, I sincerely hope we get some of the more important systems in first.
I don’t think Faction reputation has to necessarily be a grind in and of itself. It could be a vehicle for more content. The idea behind the Living Story and the 2-week cadence is to create the idea that Tyria is a living, breathing world with things going on all the time. It’s not static for a long time and then SUDDENLY HUGE THING!
I think the idea of using the existing Factions (Vigil, Durmand Priory, Whispers, Pact, and all the different races) is another avenue to do something similar. It could be a neat way to have smaller content that shows that while there are major events going on in the world, there are other things going on as well.
Examples of this kind of content would be things like “Acolyte kitten of The Durmand Priory got word that there is an ancient artifact in a cave in Frostgorge Sound. Help Acolyte kitten investigate by searching for this Artifact.” Then there’s a series of events where you meet up with Acolyte kitten , going hunting in the wrong cave but get a clue as to the right one. You go to the right one but some Corrupted Quaggan got to it first and you have to fight them for it. Then it turns out the artifact is broken and you have to go get the remaining piece from another cave that’s guarded by a Champ Quaggan/Krait hybrid that takes a bunch of people to kill. Beat it, get the other piece bring it back to the Priory for study. Tada! You get a bunch of factions points with the Priory and the maybe the Quaggans for protecting them or something and you felt like you actually did something worth doing.
edit: LOL That is a seriously weird word to censor.

…
I know ‘quests’ aren’t exactly what Gw2 does. Hearts are the nearest equivalent – but if I could posit a thought.. what’d be wrong with unlockable, repeatable hearts?“Daily” hearts would be sweet. Multiple hearts across all the maps, should bring people back into those map (especially if we’re not limited into how many we do, as in there are a total of 40 across all maps but we can only do 5 that would be bad).
They’re almost in line with some of the dailies anyways, where you have to kill 40 (don’t remember, I do sPvP since it’s easier) in a certain region… I mean that’s the same thing has having a heart for that in that region…
This seems like a fun idea. Expand upon the Living Story idea and have Daily Hearts or Daily Quests around the world that don’t necessarily have to deal directly with the living story but could. One example could be: Slay the Champion Tamini Butcher of Gendarran Fields. Except in order to kill him there was a quest that went with it. Perhaps one day the Tamini tribe gets particularly bold and starts attacking a certain human settlement around Gendarran Fields. This spawns an event where you must defend the settlement, set up siege, and eventually slay the Butcher of Gendarran Fields.
Or perhaps it’s a daily scavenger hunt, not unlike the Explorer Guild Mission where you have to find certain items in specific places around Tyria and eventually kill a boss.
Another idea is you could incorporate the actual Living Story currently going on with these special bigger events. So instead of just toxic spores showing up everywhere, what if we happen to stumble upon some Molten Alliance mooks setting up a “Mysterious Probe” somewhere and they call for backup. So you have to defeat the existing hordes and then waves of them start coming, finishing with a Champ that spawns to defend his underlings.
You want Horizontal Progression? How about giving us up to 10 Faction Ranks for the Orders, and all other friendly Factions in the game (even unfriendly factions in some cases!). When we reach a high enough rank, then we unlock new titles. We can also then Purchase special Faction weapon and Armor skins, using Gold, not new Tokens, or anything else. You can raise your faction rank by doing events that involve those factions or defeating certain bosses.
YES! You could even integrate this system with the current quest system and make it work in a way similar to how the temperament system works. Each quest you do has a certain value (positive or negative) for each faction you directly interact with. It would essentially be a series of experience bars that as you interact with them more, the more your influence with them goes up.
Along with this, why not add some more armor sets to the existing Orders and Pact? Give them new, exotic armor sets that are more kitten versions of the originals.
A post of mine from a couple months ago seems to fit more in line with this CDI, so I’ll repost it here, with a few tweaks.
New Armor Sets through gameplay not gem store
For example, it would be great to have some sets themed around the world bosses. A Tequatl set, Shatterer, JoJo, SB, etc. Perhaps have them drop some sort of world boss specific token that you could turn in for armor sets. Along the same lines as dungeon armor.
More Story missions. Let’s kill those elder dragons!
Honestly, while I love the living world stuff, it feels like none of it matters because there’s so little to do in each one. I genuinely hope there is an expansion of some kind in the works. The thing that won me over to GW2 was the overwhelming sense of wonder when I first started. The world felt genuinely MASSIVE and there were people friggin everywhere! Now everyone just huddles together in LA and the various dungeons/champ farms. I’m reasonably confident the current storyline is going to deal with a/the dragon(s), and I hope this means a continuation of the personal story.
Guild Halls and a United Major City Chat
I give a caveat with this one. I would love it if Guild Halls were not only customizable with things like Vendors, Crafting tables and a Guild Hall of Monuments that expanded as you researched different guild upgrades, but actually were instances within buildings within the major cities, not just LA. I love Divinity’s Reach but have almost no reason to ever go there. But if my Guild Hall were based there, I’d be there all the time! Especially if the city chat were the same no matter where I went so I didn’t miss anything.
Major Events throughout the World reflected in Major Cities
This actually harkens back to my WoW days. I distinctly remember how awesome it was walking into Stormwind City or Orgrimmar and seeing the Head of Nefarion hanging from the gates and getting a buff because of it. How great would it be if we could hang Teq’s head over the Mystic Forge in Lion’s Arch? It would be a reason to celebrate and band the players together to cheer for one another!
The ability to change gear stats (Note there is still a lot of discussion about whether people want this or not)
The ability to build up to Ascended Gear through drops rather than just relying on RNG.
Bump. We are close to being able to move onto the ‘focused’ Horizontal Progression part of this conversation.
Does anyone have anymore comments on the proposal above based on our discussions?
Chris
I would like to voice my love for this idea. As it is currently, ascended gear is very expensive. The cost of getting your crafting up to 500, the time gated T7 mats, the Obsidian shards and all the other expensive mats just to craft a single set of Ascended gear is substantial for what I imagine is a large portion of the playerbase. If the cost remains the same (as I imagine it will) the ability to change the stats of said gear in a manner similar to legendary weapons would be a welcome addition, in my opinion.
I think it would increase the incentive for players to reach for it. Pair armor where I can switch my stats on the fly with the ability to change my traits on the fly and you will have my sold forever! Storage space is precious as it is already, this would be a godsend.
Here’s an crazy idea that’s a little out of left field:
What if any profession could use any armor type?
With this one change you would instantly have access to a wider range of aesthetic choice for their character. Not only would your characters get a wider aesthetic choice, but you could have some really crazy builds with it but it would completely squash the idea of the “trinity”.
In order to assist with balance, you could perhaps give certain advantages/disadvantages with each type of armor. Heavy armor would give you increased armor rating, but decreased movement speed. Medium armor would give a healthy dose of both. Light armor would give you the most movement speed, but lowest armor rating. The ability to mix and match would significantly widen the range of builds and survivability.
Bizarre use cases!
Guardians could switch to medium armor to focus more on DPS, then survivability. Ele’s could wear heavy armor to boost their survivability and perhaps encourage more melee Ele’s in PvE. When was the last time you saw a D/D ele in a dungeon? (It’s rare!) And imagine what would no doubt be everyone’s nightmare? A necro in heavy armor! Good lord, it would be glorious!
Give the ascended gear either “limited” stat swapping or full stat swapping like legendaries…or a way (a quest for instance) that would allow you to Add a stat for stat swapping.
If there were epic quests in place where you could unlock stat combinations for your gear that’d be.. awesome. That would be unbelievably awesome.
No more grind; make it about challenges.
I agree, would love to hear from Chris on this idea specifically, epic quest chains to unlock swappable item stats and new item stat combos.
This is a cool idea. Lots of logic problems to think about in regard to it. Need more time to think (-:
Chris
My idea for an “epic quest chain” to unlock ascended gear:
Make a member of the Vigil/Order of Whispers/Durmand Priory/Seraph/Different races in each of the major cities that each has a problem that needs to be handled. That “problem” will ultimately lead to the fighting of a world boss.
But before you get to that stage you first have a “something mysterious is going on” quest where you are given a unique item and bring it to some NPC somewhere that triggers an event to guard a dude/ save a captured dude/ retrieve the dude’s thing / whatever. That dude you saved/thing you brought back then tells you “ohmigosh, this super meanie head is doing something evil/is being forced to doing something evil/killed my wife”.
Then you have a “track the bad guy” quest(s) where you are tracking the dude down and figuring out what he’s planning/already has in the works.
Then you have the “confront the bad guy” quest resulting in a champ fight that should absolutely be in the world proper, not in an instance (because everyone loves ganging up on a bad guy!) Then, right as he’s about to die he vows he vengence/slips away/casts the spell/summons the creature that ultimately is what he/she was actually planning which was the world boss. Then you get the question to go kill JoJo/Shatterer/whatever and go kill it.
That doesn’t sound all that long, but you could make it so that simply unlocks a new vendor you didn’t have access to before that accepts some new world boss currency/ectos/laurels/whatever to buy ascended armor.
**I would love it even more if the armor you could buy from this dude was actually ascended armor themed after each world boss.
Hi everyone,
During the last few weeks, there have been a lot of discussions about YouTube and the hot topic lately has been policies about posting to YouTube video content that contains videogame assets. This situation is continuing to develop and we’ll be monitoring YouTube changes, but we’d like to provide some clarification on the matter of our policies.
To use assets (e.g., screenshots, footage) from our games, any content creator needs to comply with the Guild Wars 2 Terms of Use that are detailed here: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/legal/guild-wars-2-content-terms-of-use/. These rules are pretty explicit and haven’t changed since we put them together. They define what content ArenaNet considers out of line. Content creators are not permitted to use our assets to create a commercial product and use of our assets for non-commercial purposes is permitted. Monetizing a fan-created Guild Wars 2 video on YouTube via its partner program is generally not against these Content Terms of Use, just as serving advertising (Google Ads, for instance) on a fansite is not against the Content Terms of Use.
We actually support people sharing their experiences with our game, such as Let’s Play, guides, reviews, or other types of fan videos on YouTube. We generally do not take any action against YouTube videos using our game assets. We will investigate what’s happening with the PlayNC claims. You can contact us at community@arena.net if you have further questions. We’re also going to start reviewing our policies to make sure they’re clear on where we stand regarding content creation. Keep in mind that this will take quite some time since it involves legal reviews.
Thanks a lot for supporting the Guild Wars 2 community by creating awesome content to show your experiences with the game!
So, I’ve been thinking about recording all of the Living Story cinematics and major story events and putting them up on a YouTube channel. I wouldn’t be adding any commentary or anything to it, it would be more of a historical “Catch up on the story so far” series of videos.
Would this be something that you guys would be okay with?
For me, Final Fantasy Tactics is one I loved, where I was able to continue to unlock new jobs and advanced professions for my characters, as well as level up their abilities within those professions. It remains one of my all time favorite games, and one of my favorite systems of progression in any game. I’m also pretty darn fond of that Guild Wars game and skill collection.
Man, advanced professions would be the coolest addition to GW2! I think a lot of the Final Fantasy “advanced professions” are my favorite progression systems as well. The ability to specialize and feel like I’m really fulfilling a role is immensely fulfilling.
Personally, I would love to be able to specialize into a specific trait line or perhaps even a specific weapon. Gain more skills/abilities specific to that trait line/weapon that allowed me to be more useful.
For example, a Guardian being able to specialize in Hammers could perhaps unlock even more powerful versions of the hammer skills. In addition the original 5, they would get skills like
1: Hammer Swing -> Hammer Bash -> Symbol of the Advanced Protection (Create a large symbol that gives protection, might and regen to you and your allies)
2: Cracked Earth: Crack the ground around you with a mighty blow damaging, Immobilizing and weakening foes around you.
3: Concussive Blow: Smash your hammer into your foe, crippling and interrupting your foe.
4: Zealots Fiery Embrace: Send a wave toward your foe that immobilizes and burns your foe.
5: Wall of Warding: Smash the ground, damaging foes around you and creating a line of earth that foes cannot cross and reflects projectiles.
New virtues!
Virtue of Wisdom: Remove conditions from allies nearby every 40 seconds. Activate: You and allies gain Protection and Regen.
Things of this nature would be great! Also, the opportunity to master new elite skills or even hunt for them as in GW1 would be a welcome addition. Ideas for new elite skills:
Guardian:
Symbol of Fiery Resolve: The ground around you erupts in flame, granting regen, fury, protection and might to you and your allies. Foes are set on fire and are weakened in the face of your resolve.
Mesmer:
Masquerade: Grants invisibility (3s) to you and summon 5 random illusions to distract and attack your foe. → Party Crasher: Shatter all your illusions at once, damaging and confusing nearby foes.
Those are just a couple ideas I had for more advanced skills.
(edited by adubb.2453)
I dont think we need 8+ pages telling them that ascended gear was a bad idea. If we can lets focus on ideas to make obtaining it easier and other ideas for progression other than vertical.
I’ve written a few walls of text already where I analyzed the current situation and made serious suggestions to improve upon it.
I don’t actually think ascended gear was a bad idea. I do think there needs to be more ways to acquire it (as many of us have been bringing up.)
In fact that’s really my main issue with ascended gear is only being able to acquire it via crafting. It makes it feel less satisfying somehow when the only real gate is money. For whatever reason (and it may just be me) but getting my first set of dungeon armor was WAY more satisfying then any crafted/temple/cultural gear. Because I actually worked for it. It’s like going to going into a Arah LFG group and seeing a bunch of guys in Arah gear. When you see that you know you’re with a group who knows what they’re doing.
Oh, and also the ascended gear is ugly. Seriously, how is it that the gear with the highest stats, is also the worst looking? My only guess is that this was a bid to sell more transmutation crystals, which makes me sad.
Oh, one more thing before I forget. Skills! I know this is a tricky subject to go into as there are balance issues that come into play, but I would love for some more variety in terms of skills.
Wishlist in terms of Skills:
- All classes can use all weapon types.
- New utilities that offer a broader range of builds
- New Elites that a genuine game changers
- Elite Skills that you have to hunt down (a la GW1) instead of spending skill points in
- Better underwater skills/more interesting combat *
- I know this is a weird one, but I love the idea of underwater combat, but as it currently stands it’s incredibly dull.
Ascended armor is a sticky issue for me for a couple of reasons. The fact that that the only way you can get it is through crafting, is disappointing. I know you can supposedly get some pieces in a drop, but if the chances are as low as getting an ascended weapon/precursor, then that will be exceedingly rare and I hold no hope for that. Not to mention the stat options are going to be random, and not necessarily what you need anyway.
Proposed solution: Give us more ways to acquire ascended armor. In addition to just straight up crafting, why not gate the ascended armor behind dungeon tokens? Each dungeon has different stats, so gate the different pieces that way. If the issue is time gating it, why not just make each piece some astronomical amount of tokens? Or introduce a new form of token that either drops in addition to the normal tokens, or can be created by combining them (e.g; Combine 100 Knowledge Crystals to make 1 Wisdom Cube. Each ascended armor piece costs 10 Wisdom Cubes)
In line with this, I would love to see more permanent content in the way of new dungeons outside of Fractals. I do love Fractals, but my word, they take so long now at the higher levels that it’s hardly worth the negligible benefit; Getting ascended weapons/armor chests is unlikely. There’s no armor to work for, and now I can craft ascended backpieces without needing to run fractals. What reason do i have to do fractals anymore? TA Aether path is a great start, I’d love to see more new paths that are a greater challenge in all of the existing dungeons.
Another point that may not be directly related to horizontal or vertical progression, why are there no new armor sets (other then ascended)? The point of the endgame in GW2 is more about visual appearance then stats, correct? Then if that’s the case, I would love it if we could see a solid armor set update. Yes, there have been quite a few armor sets that have come out through the Gem Store, but is that the only way we’ll ever get good looking armor?
Proposed solution: World boss themed exotic armor. Give me a reason to fight The Shatterer for the billionth time! Why not have each world boss drop their own currency or crafting material that I could then use to create/buy my own world boss armor. Shatterer armor! Jormag armor! Shadow Beast armor! I can imagine so really amazing looking armor sets!
Anyway, those are my thoughts thus far. Gotta get back to work now.
-Frostgorge Farm for a bit (our guild [RegA] is transferring from Devona’s Rest to Dragonbrand and some guildies need help with raising the money)s
What? Say it isn’t so. The increased presence of RegA recently had been letting me hope we could organize Devona’s resurrection around you guys.
It is indeed so. Many of us have already made the move. I’m sorry to say it appears we’re bringing [LLVG] and [SA] with us as well. We’ve tried to do our best to bring DR back to life, but there just aren’t enough motivated players to do so. Dark Jean [OP] isn’t moving and will continue to golem rush everything if you want some WXP.
Aside from WvW, after failing to get enough player support to even getting Claw of Jormag down lately, there’s just nothing in Devona’s Rest worth staying for. [GASM] and [PRO] are on Dragonbrand (former DR guilds) and we’re looking forward to working with them again on an active, populated server.
I, for one, can’t wait to change up my daily routine to fit a server that has people who actually are motivated and know what they’re doing. Obviously not everyone on the server fits that description, but in the week since I transferred over, it’s been like a completely different game. Feel free to join us!
Most days I’ll start by
-Finishing the daily
-AC 1,3
-CoF 1,2
-Kill whatever world boss is up at the time
-Frostgorge Farm for a bit (our guild [RegA] is transferring from Devona’s Rest to Dragonbrand and some guildies need help with raising the money)
If I’ve got a bit more time on my hands…
-WvW
-PvP Daily
-Do some Achievement hunting
-Temples
