Losing to win?

And before the powers that be label this a matchup thread, it is not one. We’re not saying who is better or why, we are asking a very basic and important set of questions.

There has to be a better way to put servers together that are not too overpowered but still have huge diversity in server fights. I can think of one , just one, NA/EU/China in the same leagues – rising or falling in their “tier”.

I can’t do the math in my head but having more than 12 servers in each league would make it much more of a competition.

There are only six teams in NA Gold – doesn’t that strike anyone as a bit strange when all others in NA have 9, it doesn’t make sense and it doens’t give the player pool enough to keep it fresh.

Just because it’s gold doens’t mean there aren’t more than just the six that belong in that category. All categories, Gold, Silver and Bronze should have the same number of servers to be an equitible and serviceable season.

The math for the wins and losses bear out that some are losing to win – period – and in doing so make a mockery of a very flawed “matchup system”.

If the achievements can be achieved in less than a week, and they can, the tournament shoud last a week.

Achievements need to be there for people to be “interested” in any area, including WvW. Just look at what happened when too many could not get into Tequatl – talk about a drop off… It’s the achievements that make any part of the game “interesting” and not a grindy bore.

A major change in achievements would “fix” a lot of WvW’s woes.

Tournament: Anyone else burned out?

So this has been my first tournament. I was there at the start, wide eyed and eager to fight for the pride of my server. Throughout April, I poured as much effort as I could into the tournament. But for the past week or two, I’ve started dreading the experience. The feeling of obligation to put in as much time as you possibly can, taking away from many other aspects of the game, is really starting to get to me. Two months is just a long kitten time, and I don’t think it should be that way for future tournaments. I would rather see a series of 10 three day matches over one month, rather than the 8 one week matches we’re seeing this time around.

What are your thoughts on the length of the current tournament, and what do you think should happen in that regard for future tournaments?

This is my second tourney and I am not burned out.

If people aren’t pacing themselves in WvW, that’s a personal responsibility issue, not a gaming issue.

Go for a walk.

Clean your room.

Do the dishes.

Do the laundry.

Talk to your friends.

Spend time with family and friends.

Go into WvW bright eyed again…

All of these are great suggestions.

This all sounds like a lot of fun.

Except for the last one.

Then you are the one in a rut, not the game.

To be honest, I doubt the PvEers would want to WvW after the last 2 months anyways. They are probably bored of it. I’d rather have more people playing the game in general than having a higher percentage in WvW any day.

Want? With nothing “else” to do, it’s our job to interest them, not anet’s.

I’ve made over 250 gold in 7.5 weeks in WvW – it’s lucrative, it’s fun, and you play with some of the best players and worst trolls in the game on your own side…

Many I know spend 4-6-14 hours a day in WvW – but it’s not enough because we need coverage and training, not mindless zerging and panic calls at those times when each map holds far too few.

Map calls btw, that are now public knowledge – like nothing in fantasy or fact would happen if a war broke out between three entities – and the megaserver that lays us bare before our enemies is highly unfair and just a bit more than ridiculous. Megaserver was a bad idea in light of the needs of WvW.

Strategy is what WvW should be more about rather than pew-pew-pew, jump like in PvE, where, btw, Rangers are rockers with halos who can stand in a champions glow and laugh, but never in WvW.

Since our pets still don’t do the instantaneous cast for their special skills, it’s not fixed – but we are viable as roamers and zerg backliners.

If you listen to trolls, you will not find out what works on a Ranger or any other toon.

Pet F2s NOT fixed

I always roll with a wolf.

Hit F2, and it still takes like 5-6 seconds from hitting the F2 to the wolf using fear.

This is really frustrating. It’s STILL not cancelling the other actions in its chain to use the F2.

How about it never going off?

Am I reading this wrong?

It either means all BUT f2 or it means they didn’t care that they missed one. And the only one that matters with a pet.

They said it, now we ask they do it – instant is what they promised, and we need it.

I transferred before leagues! I went from BP to HOD. The rest of my guild transferred to Mag but I didn’t feel like paying out of pocket to transfer or fork over the gold. Also BP was seeming to lose momentum in the WvW community at the time. I heard that the HOD WvW community was pretty active and I decided to see for myself and it was free!

HoD is better in some ways, and the same in others.

I still love it, even though the bloom is off the rose – some need to learn how to be kinder.

It’s hard enough to get pve’ers in to WvW, you give us nothing to draw the achievement hunters except those which can be had very quickly, leaving our numbers decimated after 1-3 weeks into the season.

Why overlap your new pve content with our WvW season?

I have put in more support “tickets” in WvW for this exact issue and we’re all getting a bit tired of this not being fixed and instant as they said it would be.

Which pet contributes most* in a WvW Zerg?

The secret to keeping your pets alive through the most massive scorched earth mapblob v mapblob fights is to be an absolutely terrible ranger. Horrible. Bears. Bark Skin. Heal as One (between swaps and a Heal as One, your pet really only has to last 10s before you help it.) Using Guard not for its ability to grant regen and swiftness, but using it to grant perma protection and assign your pet a radius that it will not leave (you can keep it out of the heaviest part of the fight). 1400 Healing Power, Fortifying Bond, and Sigil of Luck all help immensely as well.

Will it ever be worth it to go to such extreme lengths to keep tanky pets alive? Probably not. Fun though when retalbear starts doing better dps than damage pets.

The old maps seriously lack variety and their age can be seen. The Borderland maps are a wasteland. The few people playing it now for PPT will soon be burned out and there will be nobody left to play there.

Eternal battleground can be improved and saved. EOTM the same, but the old borderland maps have to be completely redone or replaced.

The borderland maps are simply not as rewarding as EOTM or EBG and That is why hardly anyone plays them. Increase the rewards and then people will go back to the borderlands maps.

This I agree with.

All maps besides EBG are awful, awful, awful and laid out so badly that no one wants to go there unless it’s an emergency or a guild run.

EBG is the map to copy or expand.

I don’t know about you, but personally I think WvW has hit a new low, and the best part is, Devs don’t care, or if they do, they’re doing extremely poor job showing it.
Blow out matches, double teaming, stale match ups, server stacking encouragement before season two, just to name few issues.
I have no idea what they’re doing, but I’m starting to think even EA and Dice did better job “fixing” Battlefield 4.

There have been no fixes for WvW.

In fact, I’ve noticed that the normal “loot” that are given for camps and towers is lower than it was – not the cash, but the badges and the loot one can sell or salvage.

If I didn’t have 132% magic find, I’d be getting far less.

I’ve “looted” more spikes in the last month that I did in the past THREE months before it.

This is a bad idea. WvW doesn’t need more PvE achievement farmers. WvW is rewarding in many other ways and loot and achievement points are not one of those….

You’re not seeing new WvW players as such, you are seeing them as PvE’ers again.

We’re talking about getting more people in WvW permanently and making it far more appealing to those who DO pve far more now than they WvW…

will this see Australians move to the China server once the ques settle down? Closer time zone for them than America? What about Asiatic Russians? Vladivostok? And if they do switch for better primetime coverage… what kind of impact will that have on the servers that rely on these people for night coverage?

Will the China servers have other language servers like in Europe (English, German, French, Spanish)? So English, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Russian? Or will the differences in writing be too problematic? It would be a good opportunity for Anet to expand the coverage rather than just China.

I am running Rabid gear and doing about 1700+ condition damage after food and tools – with a higher survive-ability than I’ve had in a while – not bunker by any means.

Any tweaks or suggestions to get the condi any higher appreciated.

I have guard stacks and condi stacks that pop this over to about 1850+ when guild buffed.

Normal running – 1700+ condition damage and not bad stats otherwise.

My own build, did what I could with my understanding of balance and going for as much condition damage as possible.

I know what you say about critical rate and Sharpening edge, but a toxic cristal not will up all your dps? I think is not mandatory focus only on condition for ‘condition build’ the right hybrid is the solution – like what you sugest on your condition trap build, certainly I will try run this.

Trust me, there are some native English speakers with way worse english than you. You don’t have to appologize for anything!

for the DPS increase, It all depends….

  • 100 extra condition damage is equal to 5 extra dps of bleeding on each bleed.
  • 100 extra precision is equal to a rough 5% increase in critical chance.
  • At 1610 Condition Damage (in the build), each bleed deals 123 damage.
  • At 1710 condition damage (with toxic crystal), each bleed deals 128 damage.

If that extra crit chance gives me an extra bleed, then it would equal the damage of having to manually (without crit) apply 25 bleeds. To be fair, I only added up the bleeds, and there might be a very marginal dps increase from burning, poison, and other conditions if you have them with sigils and runes.

And also, that toxic oil only gives me a 3.3% greater chance to apply an extra bleed, which is kind of small, but I still value that more than the tiny dps increase from 100 extra condition damage.

If you are going to use that build, please be cautious! There is exactly ZERO Survival in that, and you might die really fast against some players in wvw.

I wouldnt listen too much to the tool-tips on condition attacks because it depends entirely on how well they cleanse. I mean you can get Entangle to read well over 30k damage, and then if you hit 5 people with it you can theoretically do 150k damage with the single attack.. but thats never going to happen in reality

This is also the reason why I favour condition damage and re-application of conditions (precision) over condition duration.. because extending durations to too long doesnt actually make a huge amount of difference after certain point because they will be cleansed by then anyway, whereas if you are constantly just reapplying short bleeds non-stop then their cleanses really make very little difference.

That’s pretty much my reason right there. You need to be able to constantly reapply conditions after the enemy runs out of cleanses

I could try to use Undead Runes and give myself nearly 2400 condition damage. The dps from conditions is on a whole different level when you get that high ((and it does totally work for some people to invest that far into a single stat)), but if the enemy just cleanses the conditions and you can’t reapply them for a few seconds, that condition damage is going to do nothing for you.

Sorry if I missed it, what is your build that (with food) you can go well over 2000 condi damage?

80 Gear for my Ranger?

Just got my Longbow Ranger to 80.

Which Karma Exotic gear is best for my Ranger? I was thinking of the Rubicon ones with the Superior Rune of Lyssa. Would those be the best?

BTW: I PVE, and don’t do WvW or sPvP.

I am a condi Ranger – Full Rabid with ascended trinkets that add more condi, power and vitality.

I’ve been running zerk bearbow for a while and I really like it,but I want to try something new with which I can tag more people in the zerg,because with my build I can get like 25-30 kills max in a blob fight.Looking for good tanky build with good condi dmg for blob fights.Thank you in advance.

You aren’t the only one looking for a build like this.

My Ranger does 1800 condi damage while doing about 2850 armor, decent toughness but I am still getting downed in a fights 1v1 with mesmers (insane damage), thieves (heartseeker – is there NO counter???) and the occasional necro…

Rangers are wonderful, but they take some dedication to learn their skills and I am still learning and trying to find others who are willing to impart…

What makes for a good WvW server? Is it because of numbers? A good community? Skilled players? Tons of guilds on a server? What makes a server a good WvW competitor?

You mean no such changes like the ones tomorrow?

Any big change that will affect WvW?

- radical changes of traits
- skill rebalance
- account wide WEXP
- critical damage change
- 2 sigils for 2h weapons, changed sigils/runes
- account bound legendaries and Ascended
- no more home-server cities to do a call-for-arms
Charackter changes affect WvW gameplay for sure.

Sadly, I agree 100% with your post and the last one is the worst thing that ever happened to WvW so far.

WvW and Megaservers Don't Mix

I agree, Lion’s Arch should be THE city that is “server specific” and would not be hard to implement at all.

Seems an obvious choice but I don’t know enough about how they implemented their mega server tech to say how easy it would be to disconnect. The more important point is atm we don’t even really have a Lions Arch.

I think ANET should make a World AP pool (all the AP earned by players on a given world) that has some effect on how the Living Story events progress so lower population worlds can take their time with LS if they choose. Seems like rebuilding Lions Arch will be the next step in the Living Story and could be done on a world by world basis so different worlds could maybe all have their own flavor of LA sort of the like the voting thing did last year but this time it is a choice which parts and services to rebuild first or something. Would be a way for a World to build up some community outside of WvW and maybe a source of world pride.

Still holding out hope that some of kind of World wide chat (think of it like Alliance chat) is possible but it did not sound like something ANET could do back in the BWE’s when we first started asking for something similar. Hopefully that has changed.

I’d like my city back… Nothing was like Lion’s Arch and it’s getting tiresome to try to figure out how to work around its loss.

WvW hasn’t been the same since. I can’t stress that enough, we arne’t getting the “PUGs” we did before… Not in the same numbers and at the times we need them.

Guardians, Mesmers, Necromancers and Elementarists can counter a stealth stomp.

Thieves are given something that no other character can do, kill without many being able to stop you – unseen.

Let me share you a secret, you need to be at around 120 radius of the target to stomp it.
You “unseen” looks pretty visible to me.

But then again, I must be an ESP. I can see invisible stuff.

Your “secret” isn’t valid for Rangers apparently.

Guardians, Mesmers, Necromancers and Elementarists can counter a stealth stomp.

Thieves are given something that no other character can do, kill without many being able to stop you – unseen.

Let me share you a secret, you need to be at around 120 radius of the target to stomp it.
You “unseen” looks pretty visible to me.

But then again, I must be an ESP. I can see invisible stuff.

I don’t ever see a thief anywhere near me when downed or being stomped.

The camera view from downed doesn’t allow the same view as normal so even if you twist around you can’t see the thief and then you are dead without a single downed skill that worked or even had a chance to work.

Bottom line is WvW is in such a sad state, it’s the worst I’ve seen.

I believe that stagnant is the official buzzword.

I think the race cities are fine as is, but would be nice to have LA not be a megaserver when it gets rebuilt.

That is the idea I had but didn’t want to even voice until someone else did.

I agree, Lion’s Arch should be THE city that is “server specific” and would not be hard to implement at all.

Maybe they could add 2 letters beside players names to better know what server that player is in. For example [AR] (axme)highlandria or [YB]. This could help relieve some of the issues.

No, I thought about that as well but it doens’t address WvW and map calls at all.

Map calls is how some servers won many matches last season. I don’t understand why the powers that be didn’t understand that or care about the dynamic they were skewing so badly – and it has mattered to most servers.

Maybe not right now. But eventually, they’ll leave the server vs server style behind and go the alliance vs alliance route of Planetside 2 or ESO. With various campaigns (i.e. server instances inherent in each alliance match up).

EotM & the PvE Megaserver were just the warm up to alliance style play, I think.

My thoughts exactly.

I don’t want a “no name alliance”, our servers are as important to WvW as “United States” or “Canada” or “Phillipines” would be to those who live there and honor their national heritages.

Megaservers threw a huge and unmanageable monkey wrench into an already stressed WvW world.

As soon as megaservers were announced, I knew this would be a problem, and also advanced a server chat option.
And team and map are not, imho, that redundant in WvW. Most of the time, we pass important information in team, and general matters or chit-chat in map.
Night crew grew very small lately, with the impossibility to speak in map, and the fact that they made a chat change that wasn’t advertised means many on the server don’t see the messages (eg: french server players, if they have their client in english, won’t see french people’s messages if the client of the messagers is in french).
So not only do we have to map hop, we have to make twice the same message with different languages, because most players don’t know they are no more seeing all messages, all that with the risk that enemy servers see the message

Please, a server chat would be great!

Server chat would get rid of a lot of problems but it would need channels as well.

We have no way to do this…

Anet took away any way for us to " home city " our servers.

They even took out the free crafting stations – you have to pay or go into WvW… or cities… yeah right on the last one… not.

Swiss Tournaments -- alternating matches.

Apparently, Swiss tournaments are used in chess. Do you see this a lot in chess tournaments:

  • The four top competitors are A, B, C, D.
  • A always beats everyone. B and C always beats D.
  • B and C are close enough in points that if the one who’s ahead in ranking loses and the other wins, then they swap positions in the rankings. Let’s say B is currently ranked above C.
  • The current matchup is A vs B and C vs D.

In this situation, B loses and C wins so they swap positions, so the next matchup is:

  • A vs C and B vs D… where C loses and B wins, so the swap positions and the next matchup is:
  • A vs B and C vs D …etc.

This goes on until the tournament ends. The problem is that 2nd place is determined by which matchup took place right before the tournament ended; and not by a head-to-head match between the two.

Does this type of situation happen a lot in Chess? Because it seems to be a bit to common in the WvW tournament.

Playing the same server for weeks in a row destroys morale. Period.

Stealth Thieves Still OP

With the same reasoning, i can go afk in the field and come back 10 minute later and see a dead zerg at my feet?

Seriously though, stealth and evasion are the two core mechanics of thief gameplay so of course they are going to have access to it. Please leave your QQ elsewhere. This can go for pretty much everyone else that complain about thieves.

You do realize I play a thief almost exclusively in wvw right? I spend most of my time roaming solo looking for solo roaming and dual roaming builds and kill them.

Yesterday I solo’d a necro/engi team, thief/engineer team, thief,ele,necro team, thief/necro team

and myself with a same thief build friend killed a team comprised of an engi/necro/ranger/warrior/ele and an upscale thief (which doesn’t count).

Edit “I did lose a fight to two shatter mesmers and a stun warrior”. That was definately a bad fight to get into.

What other profession has the capability to do such a thing? None.

I love to win, but going back to the character comment that one thief player made…. I am all for fair play, so compare me to someone like himself and others who want free wins. The lack of character is most assured not my problem.

Reveal should be changed to 6 seconds.

A thief with some integrity… Who knew.

Blockhead Magee is right, many of us don’t pop our ArenaNet tags when playing. When we do play with it on, it tends to act as a beacon that draws the enemy in like moths to a light bulb.

We are out there, even if you don’t know it.

We used to see some of you, now we almost never do.

That alone tells us something isn’t right.

the problem is that the downed ablitys are not balenced at all eather…
ele gets 3 sec invulnerbility and the chance to move into tower etc.
and ranger gets a 1 sec daze that cant be cast on a stealthed target or one with stablity…

My Ranger skills never works against a decent thief. Never. Never. Never. Never.

Everyone should have a utility that reveals nearby foes.

I’d go for a pet who has a CHANCE to reveal… geeze.

Animals can smell anything and this “out of reality” into the “pets don’t have any senses” is just nuts in a fantasy game and keeps it from being immersable at all.

Some games you can lose yourself in for a while… not this one. Never this one.

This is the only mmo in the mmo market where this is allowed.

Even upcoming and future mmo’s Does Not and Will Not incorporate this Tyrannic and Unjust system.

what is Guild Wars 2 Justification for incorporating it?

There are still MMOs that have a severe death penalty which includes dropping all gear on death, having to run back to corpse to retrieve gear and many other systems. GW2 has one of the most gentle death penalties of any MMO I have every played actually. Some MMOs also come with a one-shot kill mechanism on some classes… barring a crap build or uplevel this doesn’t happen in GW2 either.

Penalty? What penalty? I’ve never seen a penalty in WvW…

Repair? HA! Gone, never was a deterrant or penalty.

Time? Yeah maybe that is our penalty and the only one that matters.

This should never have been allowed.

I want to know why this is allowed at all.

It makes no sense that I never see some thieves and then am not able to use any “downed” skills at all to even have a 10% chance of getting up again.

No F2 Ranger pet works, so a pet can’t smell or sense a thief….

Right….. Just… Right….
