“New build possibilities”? Haven’t you paid attention, there are none. According to these forums, the class is now officially unplayable. Whoever invents Suicide Booths (<3 Futurama) is going to make a fortune off of MMO players.

Please don’t tell me that the developers actually know what they are doing because every patch they release makes it more and more obvious that they don’t play the same game we do.

If you believe – you truly believe – that the developers aren’t competent then why are you still playing? If the developers are as clueless as some of you make them out to be, then the game is doomed and you might as well abandon ship now.

We all care about this game, in one way or another. Enough to come here and criticize and complain in the hopes that it gets better. It gets nasty when people get ignored, continuously, for months. That’s when the nails come out.

The problem is that people are often wrong. They get upset when they’re told they’re wrong. And they get upset when they’re ignored.

I know half the people posting on this board think they know the game better than the developers, but few of them even understand – fully understand – their own class. Sure, they might know how to play a build or two, but how many posters in the profession sub-forums give the impression they really understand their profession on a deeper level than “the website said to take these skills, those traits, and run that rotation”? And of those, how many give the impression the even care about – let alone understand – their profession’s balance against all others in PvE, PvP, and WvW? From my experience, not very many.

So what you are saying is… all the rangers complaining about their class should shut up and learn to play? I think thats a little unfair, seeing as how someone else can play a warrior and literally faceroll anything this game has to offer. No need to understand anything better than the devs there.

Let me clarify. the forums are here for players to voice their concerns. They can and should do so. But when something like life-steal food getting an internal CD is added, a needed addition, the community goes ape**** and we get thread after thread after thread how ArenaNet destroyed “the only viable builds available to X profession”. That’s the kind of short-sighted overreaction these forums could do without.

Playing the game for 46 days (or roughly 1100/24) is not the same as being here the entire time. You talk about ‘wait and see’ when we have.

Sorry to say, the game keeps getting worse. You just need to get out of the honeymoon phase and realize it.

I’ve been here from the beginning. I’m talking about “following the game since 2010” beginning. And I can say I’ve never in my life seen a whinier, more short-sighted community than this games. The amount of crying going on in the profession sub-forums, people lamenting that their class is no longer playable because their overpowered and/or gimmicky build was balanced, is ridiculous.

“You’re throwing a fit over nothing. Unless you’re a 12K DPS 0/30/30/X Berker GC Backstab Thief, but that was pretty OP, and that’s coming from another thief.”

We’ve got two melee off handers for the thief and one of them has taken a proper downgrade here. Whether you are using stealth for triggering heals, blinds, might, condition cures, applying dazes, safe maneuvering, or just getting damage then this is bad. It delays a lot of utility that is needed for an offhand dagger build. Almost everything a thief does is set backwards for a shadow arts build and if you can’t see that then you’re not understanding that trait line. I ran Arah 4 with it today and it is still playable but it is strictly worse now in every sense.

A step back for an overpowered mechanic is a step in the right direction. CnD/Backstab was overpowered and the developers balanced it. Balance happens, you guys really need to get over it.

But you can use Death Bloss…. that’s a condi skill.

So yeah, I concur, if you’re not lining up for a backstab, it’s pretty much HS or #1 spam. >.>

This post alone illustrates the kind of short-sightedness I’m talking about. You completely discount D/D because you’re CnD Backstab combo isn’t as effective as it used to be. And you completely discount the possibility that D/D can be used for anything other than CnD/Backstab.

My D/D evasion build is proof positive that there are more uses to D/D than just CnD/Backstab. And even if it weren’t, CnD still works. It’s not as effective as it used to be (i.e. it’s not as overpowered), but it still works. You’re striking me as the kind of guy who wants it all without having to work for it.

Great, so your particular gimmick didn’t get nerfed. What happens when it does? Acting like you’re working hard because you run a subpar build is also really quite the joke.

Suppose they do nerf my build. Suppose they nerf Death Blossom, Feline Grace, Fluid Strikes, Power of Inertia, Vigorous Recovery, Uncatchable, and Bountiful Thief. If I find the build still works, just not as well, I’ll continue to run it because I consider it a fun build. If it doesn’t work at all (this is not the case with CnD), then I’ll adapt. Simple. As. That.

But the fact that you consider the evasion thief a “subpar” build says to me that you don’t really understand much about this game. I’m guessing the only reason you even play thief at all is because you heard secondhand that they were one of the best WvW classes in the game, huh?

The changes are not the death of the thief that some people claim, but they are something that causes worries with how they are implemented with very little thought on all the knock on effects they will have and gradually chip away at the entire game not just thieves.

The thing is, though, that these decisions aren’t being made with “very little thought”. If they are, then the game is doomed either way. We, the community, have had less than 12 hours to see how these effects will actually play out. Yet we’re telling the guys who know the game inside and out, who have been discussing and testing these changes for a while now (I hope) that we know better than them. Again, if we do, the game is doomed.

If you read any (well…most) of the profession sub-forums, every profession in the game is now unplayable. And it’s like this after every patch. Every time a class gets nerfed (for balancing reasons) it’s the end of the world and that class should just be removed from the game. Every time another class gets buffed (again, for balancing reasons) it’s because the developers favor that class and don’t care about any of the others.

To me, it’s all just a bunch of short-sighted hysteria over something that may or may not even be a problem. I think everyone, not just thief players, needs to take a deep breath and see how these changes are actually going to impact the game. Overreacting to “on paper” patch notes doesn’t serve anyone well.

I personally trust that the developers know what they’re doing. I wouldn’t play the game if I didn’t. God knows they’re slow in addressing issues (bugged traits that have been that way since launch), but I do trust they can balance the game without breaking classes. But I realize that “balance” means “nerf” as often as it means “buff”. I also realize that they’re not always going to get it right the first time. But I trust they’ll evaluate the way things play out and make the necessary adjustments as we move forward.

The game is only seven months old, and balancing classes (fine-tuning) takes time.

PS – I’ve run Caltrops from the moment I unlocked them, and I’ve always felt the skill was too good for the CD. I’m primarily a PvE’er, but I don’t see them being any less effective in PvP or WvW; but someone will no doubt correct me if I’m wrong.

I’m going to repeat something I said back when life-steal food was “nerfed” (i.e. balanced): if you build your character around a single skill, trait, boon, or consumable then you’re setting yourself up for a aggravation should the day come your gimmick build nerfed.

This reminds me of my days playing FFXI. At one point rangers were nerfed (i.e. balanced) in a patch, and you’d think all the rangers were going to hang themselves. Someone made a cartoon showing a line of rangers, heads hanging low, leading into a building and a line of job-changed black mages exiting the building’s other side. The cartoon, obviously, poked fun at the flavor-of-the-month players looking for the easiest path to top tier. In a similar fashion to ye olde FFXI rangers, you guys are taking over-reacting to a whole new level.

These refugees are going to, in all likelyhood, establish a camp or outpost in which to live. But I found myself wondering if refugees of the other races might, too, be relocated here in future installments of the living story. It would be cool to watch what initially starts out as a camp or outpost grow into a full-fledged town over time while also giving Southsun Cove some much needed content. Thoughts?

This Game's PvE needs a Trinity.

in Suggestions

Posted by: darkace.8925

darkace.8925

There is a trinity,

It’s called:

Damage
Control
Support

True, and that sounded like a great idea before launch. Unfortunately, because of the way the game is designed, the only thin that’s needed is just Damage (with just a bit of self-preservation). Why immobilize that mob when we can smash it to bits instead? Why bring a crowd control spec’d Engineer into a dungeon when a damage spec’d Warrior can increase our efficiency so much more?

Now if dungeons were actually built around a balance of damage, support, and control (with a sprinkling of condition damage thrown in for good measure), the current trinity would work. But as it is, just damage, damage, and more damage is all anyone needs to blow through dungeons.

As to the question posed in your thread title, I believe tengu will be the next playable race added to the game.

As to what I want, I’d personally like to play a hylek necromancer with skull face paint and tribal-looking armor or a hylek mesmer donning the most colorful stereotypically-wizard looking armor in the game.
