Hit yet again last night. Total losses from plant food sales alone now exceed 80 gold. I don’t think there’s a person playing the game who would consider 80 gold a trivial amount.

Maybe all those affected by this ‘bug’ have something in common. If you could find that commonality, it might help the Devs rectify the issue. It could not hurt.

Two problems with this. One, there doesn’t seem to be a high volume of players affected. And two, which ties into one, if there aren’t a bunch of players being affected then the chances the staff is approaching this bug with any sense of urgency is slim.

game-breaking bug vs. desire to play

Disclaimer: this isn’t a bug report, it’s a frustration report.

My account is hit by a particularly nasty bug that prevents everything from resetting at the daily reset. This includes daily achievements, orichalcum veins and ancient saplings, world boss chests, once per day per account crafting, etc. Needless to say, the bug has cost me a great deal of gold over the last 15 days. Support tickets have been met with copied and pasted replies. The thread on this subject in the Bugs sub-forum has gone ignored.

With the upcoming Features Patch and the high cadence of the Living Story, I can’t help but feel this issue is so far down the list of prioritizes that it’s not going to be fixed anytime soon (or possibly at all, if the number of players affected is particularly low). At this point, my frustration far outweighs my desire to play; and I’m starting to feel this bug will be the end of my time in Tyria. So, what’s a guy to do? Any advice?

Hit again. 76 gold and counting in lost plant food sells. 6 laurels and counting. 42 or so achievement points and counting. Countless orichalcum veins and ancient saplings lost. Countless world boss chests lost. And all the while, this thread goes ignored and my Support tickets are answered with copy and paste (literally) replies.

At this point I’m half tempted to just request a refund. Sure, my account will be closed and I’ll lose everything I’ve done in this game. But since my ability to progress has been so severely impeded by this bug – a bug I suspect isn’t being looked at with any real sense of urgency – the desire for me to log in is already plummeting by the day. I’ll give it a few more days to see if ArenaNet can at least be bothered to acknowledge this thread’s existence, but I feel this bug is going to be the end of my time in Tyria.

Second day in a row. That’s 70 gold and counting in lost plant food profits. And I can’t help but feel there’s no one actually looking into this bug. With the upcoming Features Pack and the second half of Season 2 around the corner, how many guys do we honestly feel they have working on a bug that affects so few people (even if it is a devastating bug to those unfortunate enough to experience it).

Just got hit by the bug again (third time in the last ten days). As you may or may not know, the next stage in the vine back piece was just released. So demand for the once/day/account plant food is at an all time high. Not being able to craft it cost me 16 gold. That’s another 16 gold on top of 20 it’s already cost me (not to mention the laurels, daily boss chests, rich ore veins, etc). Losing large sums of gold to a bug that’s at least a month old is kittening me off to the point that I’m considering taking my business elsewhere.

How does your question about allowing casuals to more easily obtain the ultimate weapons in the game have ANYTHING to do with adding “items” to the game? Trying to mask your request for easy BiS item access as a generic, all encompassing plea for ideas on adding ANY new items to “improve” the game for “have and have-nots” is a horribly executed (and self-centered) ploy.

You can participate in the conversation if you want to. You can not participate in the conversation if you don’t want to. But DO NOT come in here with a kitteny, condescending attitude and presume to speak for me.

Best way to add new items to the game?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: darkace.8925

darkace.8925

It seems that ArenaNet is in a precarious situation when it comes to adding new items to the game. I suspect the gulf between the Haves and the Have-Nots is a big one.

People who play casually (less often) than the hardcore players don’t have much gold, don’t quickly gain karma, and don’t like grinding out new currencies. To people who play the Trading Post well, gold is no object. To people who play a bunch, karma is easy to acquire. But people who play a bunch hate time-gates and other artificial barriers designed to slow them down. Skilled players might not bat an eye at challenging instanced content, while those less skilled might be forever locked out of content hidden behind skill-walls if the bar is set too high. Few people, so far as I can tell, enjoy menial grinds and fewer still enjoy a system in which their progress comes down to rng.

So how can ArenaNet best go about adding new items to the game while pleasing everyone (an impossible goal, but one worth striving for)? Let’s use new Legendary weapons as an example. How can ArenaNet add them to the game in a way that will make the Haves have to work for them without making them so hard to obtain the Have-Nots will have virtually no shot?

[Suggestion] Revise release schedules

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: darkace.8925

darkace.8925

First off, I want to say that Achievements =/= content. It seems like under the current LS setup, they’re giving us a day’s worth of content and a week or so worth of achievement grinding.

My suggestion is to revise the release schedules to have one large playable content release per month (such as a dungeon path and associated LS arcs, or additional weapons, or new weapons, or new areas/zones, or new level caps, or new traits and skills, or new professions— basically mini-expacs) and allow achievements to be once again attained on initial playthrough (edited to show I wasn’t expecting everything all at once every month).

It just seems to me that under the current biweekly schedule, the nuggets of content we are getting just don’t last long enough on initial playthrough and that there’s a reliance on achievement grinding to keep us occupied until the next release. None of us want busy work, we want content.

It’s actually more like three or four days of content when you include the time it takes them to patch the content-breaking bugs.

The Biconics cannot carry the GW Franchise

in Living World

Posted by: darkace.8925

darkace.8925

I disagree. The intent is for the player characters to be the driving personality to make things happen, not the biconics who are merely characters to be moved into the proper locations for them to be useful. The purpose of them is as a resource to be used in the solo instance method of storytelling in case the player doesn’t always have friends to help out (which is actually a somewhat strong way of making sure there’s a coherent story rather than having it all open world).

They have the spotlight, but because they’re around us, rather than us being in the spotlight because we follow them. Therefore, they are not the main characters, we are.

You and I couldn’t be further apart on this. The spotlight is on them, but we’re just the audience. Sure, we get to bash stuff with a sword every now and then, but outside of the Personal Story pre-Claw Island, we’re just there to observe the real characters (the iconics, the biconics, Trahearne, Scarlet, etc.).

The little pastry shop down the street

darkace.8925

I respectfully disagree. The new pastries (Living Story) are, in my opinion, of significantly lower quality than those available at the grand opening (Guild Wars 2, circa launch).

Well I certainly like the Living Story better than the personal story that was in at launch. I even liked Season 1 more than the personal story.

I didn’t hate the personal story I just found it a bit underwhelming. The living story, by contrast, I found uneven in quality but I really liked some of it. Nothing in the personal story will ever equal the Nightmare Tower, or Escape from Lion’s Arch or the Marionette fight to me. All those things I feel are better than the stuff offered at launch, at least as far as my personal entertainment goes.

I don’t particularly like the dungeons in this game and never really have. They were in at launch too, for the most part.

But I do like Dry Top a lot and I do like the season 2 of the Living Story so far? Have you actually tried it, btw?

I have. I’ve played through the first two releases on all five of my characters, and for the most part I enjoyed the content well enough (though there’s certainly still room for improvement). This last release, though, is more of the unpolished, disjointed, bug-ridden mess we got during much of Season 1. Whether it’s the progress-halting bugs or the insipid writing, I’ve only been able to stomach through it once.

dude, the ‘pastries’ that came out at launch are still in the game and are the same. This means your point is even worse. Because there are new pastries, but they’re not as good as the original pastries. So the owner isn’t only wasting their time making shirts. They’re also making new pastries. But you still prefer the old pastries. That’s ok, because the old pastries are still there. You said the pastries had gotten worse, and that’s false. There are only new pastries you do not like.

Sure, the pastries available during the grand opening are still available. But the grand opening was two years ago, and at this point they’re quite stale. I don’t think a menu offering a choice between stale and undercooked pastries is going to keep the customers lining up. Especially not when the bigger, better-established pastry shop down the street is about roll out an aggressive advertising campaign to promote its newly expanded menu.

The point here is that most of the forum posters already left the game a long time ago (they themselves say so) thus they shouldn’t come here and act as if they were still playing. There is a term for this and it’s called “kibitzer” and nobody likes those.

How do you know who among the critics actively plays and who doesn’t? Rarely does someone lambast the game while proclaiming they’ve quit playing, and those few who do could hardly be called “most”.

can I just point out that in this stupid contrived metaphor the pastries have never actually gotten any worse? The correct analogy would be that the owner started making new shirts but never made new pastries.

I respectfully disagree. The new pastries (Living Story) are, in my opinion, of significantly lower quality than those available at the grand opening (Guild Wars 2, circa launch).

Sure, that right there was exactly my point. That since you moved on, stop protesting with “constructive criticism” and let people who are actually still customers decide what they want from the shop and don’t try to tell them what they want. Because that is not constructive criticism, that’s something else.

What is it, then?

The little pastry shop down the street

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: darkace.8925

darkace.8925

As time went on, the pastry shop proprietor started cutting corners to increase profits. He served pastries that were not fully cooked. He put more effort into selling mugs and plush dolls and tee shirts than he did his pastries. Some of his customers, those who expected more from the proprietor – those who know he was capable of making kitten good pastries – started to question these moves. They implored him to get back to the business of making good pastries.

But a different group of customers, those blinded by loyalty to the pastry shop, didn’t take kindly to this kind of constructive criticism. Where the critics acted reasonably and respectfully, this group dealt in dismissive condescension. They simply would not believe that the pastry shop owner had lost his way, and they wouldn’t tolerate those who did.

So they too gathered in groups, protesting the protestors. If they’d engaged those with whom they disagreed with respect, things might have remained civil. But they were combative and insulting. Those they insulted often replied in kind. And if not for the vigilant peacekeepers policing the streets outside the pastry shop, things might have turned ugly indeed.

On a park bench at the end of the street sat a man looking at his undercooked pastry. He remembered how delicious the pastries were when the shop first opened, and this saddened him. He just couldn’t understand why those who felt the quality of the pastries had worsened since the shop’s grand opening were vilified by those wearing tee shirts and hats with the pastry shop’s logo.

how we should have engaged the Elder Dragons

in Living World

Posted by: darkace.8925

darkace.8925

I think that is the main thing though.
None of the races are strong enough to defeat the Dragons without the help of the others.

The only way we could defeat Zhaitan was due to the combined man-power, magic and technology of all the races.

Assuming what you’re saying is true (and everything we’ve seen so far indicates it is), that means each time a new Elder Dragon is ready to be toppled we’re going to have to repeat some variation of the “get the band back together” routine. Rather than each Elder Dragon being a unique challenge with a unique solution, the struggle for survival is quickly going to degenerate into a “rinse, lather, repeat” scenario wherein we’re just going through the motions.

Consider Jormag, for example. Under the “grand alliance” scenario we’re rallying the races, teaming up with the Pact, marching into his domain, fighting our way through his minions and champions, and finally using whatever means the writers give us to deliver the deathblow. Every installment will have up hoping around the globe for some reason or another, and NPCs like Caithe and Zojja will come and go as they’re needed, never staying longer than a quest or two. If it sounds familiar, it’s because it is.

Now consider the alternative. Imagine Whitebeard, Eir, and Koda’s Voice leading a war host of norn and koda against Jormag’s armies while the norn havrouns call the Spirits of the Wild to assault him while we (the players) slip past the front lines to hit him in his weakened state with some McGuffin that to finish him off. Aside from making one hell of a cutscene, such a focused and contained approach would allow the writers to delve deeper into norn and koda culture than they otherwise would be able to do. They’d also be able to make NPCs like Whitebeard and Eir shine, since they wouldn’t be hoping into and out of the story on a biweekly basis.

how we should have engaged the Elder Dragons

in Living World

Posted by: darkace.8925

darkace.8925

Instead of each dragon being a “we must all work together” scenario wherein the sylvari ask the charr to help kill Mordremoth, the norn solicit the asura to help fight back Jormag, etc. I’d rather have see each Elder Dragon dealt with (more or less) by the those whom it most threatens.

In this way, the developers could spend more of their resources fleshing out that race’s struggles with the Elder Dragons. They’d be able to tell a more coherent story overall, since they wouldn’t have to worry making sure each race gets face time every Chapter. And the developers could also focus on fully developing the appropriate NPCs (racial leaders, iconic and biconic members, etc).

And we – the players – would get to delve deeper into the lore and take in more of the political and social ramifications of fighting the Elder Dragons. We wouldn’t be stumbling through a loosely connected story one disjointed installment at a time. And we’d be able to develop a connection to the people and places we’re supposed to be saving from destruction (assuming the writers do their job well).

Finally, whether tackling the Elder Dragons as individual nations or a unified resistance, my status as second in command of a military force formed solely to fight the Elder Dragons should be more than just a piece of background fluff. The Pact should be no less a tangible weapon to myself than my sword, bow, or staff.

Yes, you are seeing things through the nostalgia goggles. The Nightfall heroes were nice but they were either the first step to dragging the limelight fully away from the player (as many claim Kormir did and Traherne does) or unnecessary baggage to be forced to work with (I have a team to kill Varesh, WHY do I need General Morgahn with me?!).

They all had character, but most of the time they were as flat as the biconics and Destiny’s Edge are claimed to be. Especially Koss, as amusing and fun as he was.

The OP tries laboriously to make the point of the biconics not carrying GW2, and I’d add the heroes couldn’t carry Nightfall or Eye of the North. Boy is it a good thing they didn’t have to . . . and it’s a good thing the biconics aren’t making an attempt carrying GW2.
