So, I was thinking I should probably find a dungeon/fractal guild as I started playing a bit more often. Any suggestions? I’m not serious enough (or skilled enough yet ) to go for one of those big time guilds but looking for something a bit more casual, not PHIW casual but just casual casual.

I’m having fun in [ARES], they’re strong in dungeons but don’t have a lot of fractalers. They also have a pretty dedicated pvp crowd.

Loving all the inexplicable inferences in this thread.

breathes deeply Dungeon forums. Drink it in.

Still good advice though, if you’re looking for a regular group, a guild is the way to go. My guild’s dungeon activity has been ramping up, but we’re a mixed bag — some meta players and some inexp newbies, but we’re a chill bunch that abhors drama/infighting.

If you can handle occasionally running in non-optimal groups (Even a “bad” every now and then) without complaining and still have a good time (a rare quality in this game!), I can send you an invite :-) Ping me here or in game and I’ll send one out.

That does clear up a lot, and it is a good, commonsense policy.

But the reason this question is still coming up is that we’re trying to understand one thing:

What does ArenaNet consider an advantage?

I’ll share my situation:

I’d really like to use one of those DPS meters, and compare some different weapons / rotations and develop a more quantitative understanding of how the damage I’m putting out varies from build to build.

But these add-ons contain some of the following features in addition to the DPS tracking:

- Knowing an enemy’s exact HP
- Knowing another player’s exact HP
- Having numeric HP indicators above allies heads (shows location)
- Having numeric HP indicators above enemies heads (shows location)

At the end of the day, using a DPS meter with all of the above features while I run a dungeon gives me absolutely 0 in-game advantage. Yet, some of the features did provide information that was not immediately available in game (boss HP, etc). Would ArenaNet consider access to information of such triviality an advantage?

On top of that, there is the reference to “modifying game files.” Clearly, that means the on-disk files are off limits, but does that extend to injecting dynamic libraries at runtime and scraping the game process’s memory, as most mods regularly do? Does the question of advantage enter into this rule, as it does for the functionality rule?

It’s frustrating. While I can guess that using such an add-on would probably not get me banned, I don’t know for sure. And if the risk of being wrong is losing progress in a 2k+ hour endeavor, then I’m not going to take the chance. It’ll take a direct confirmation that such features are ok. My guess or another player’s guess will not be enough for that risk.

And that sucks. Hence why we just want a little clarification on the policy: it is still open to interpretation, and we just want to make sure that we’re interpreting it correctly.

Why did you have to wait for HoT to just pop on and say “We recognize that this is a problem and are working to fix it.”

Do you realize how much nicer it would be if we were to receive timely information? Is that asking too much?

I realize that there was a hint about this given a couple of weeks ago by Gaile, but that was still 70-some odd pages into this thread — about 8 months since this thread started.

That’s eight months widening the gap of distrust between ArenaNet and it’s players. Eight months of rage that could have been avoided from the start by just engaging with us in a timely manner. Seriously, ask yourselves — is this how you want your company to present itself to its players?

I hope that post-HoT, the need to wait for every meaningful communication to require hype and theatrics is gone.

Because it was never a problem.

CJ seems to disagree:

we’re going to be removing the current trait unlocking system currently on live and replacing it with a more simplified system that supports where skills-traits-specializations are going in the future.

you can purchase traits for skill points and gold which you can earn from different types of content and game modes OR play the content, this would not be considered a “grindy” system by our definition – but that doesn’t mean it’s right for Gw2’s future.

So I heard of a thing, but is it okay?

So you have to make a decision. Is it worth getting my account banned vs the advantages of the mod?

Do you honestly believe that that is a good system?

I honestly do. It puts the burden of responsibility on the individual and off of Anet.

So we’re given an inconsistent rule set, and told to abide by it. If it turns out that some grey area is differently interpreted by them vs. us, we should just expect to be banned.

A bit more certainty would be nice, IMHO.

If a dev came on and said “This software is good” and so you use it, but it turns out that that dev was wrong (yes it happens) and it is in fact not ok to use, who is at fault? Now Anet has a big problem on their hands. Do they ban all those who used the program due to incorrect information? Or do they still allow players to use it, which causes problems with the integrity of the game? At what point do you draw the line?

No it’s better to say “Here are the guide lines” and let the payers decide, then to make a definitive statement that can be a major problem in the future.

You’ll notice that in the recent discussion, no one is asking for specific mods to get a thumbs up or down. They’re asking for clarification on rules. E.g., What sorts of behaviors are allowed, which are not?

This is a much easier position for ArenaNet to comment on. They don’t have to worry about future versions of a whitelisted app changing — as long as it doesn’t perform any illegal operations, it’s good.

We just want to be able to have questions answered when we ask for clarification on the rules. I believe that is a more than reasonable request.

Unfortunately, no matter how reasonable the request, we’re still talking about a turnip here.

Keep in mind that the ToS also says that any automation of gameplay is forbidden, yet instrument macros are ok. Why? Because there is no gameplay advantage.

Similarly, would a DPS meter that only displays information be disallowed? Displaying the data available in the combat in a more easy-to-grok form, like a graph or statistical summary, offers no gameplay advantage. It would just be an aid to theorycrafters and min/max’rs.

Things like this could use some clarification.

So you have to make a decision. Is it worth getting my account banned vs the advantages of the mod?

Do you honestly believe that that is a good system?

Dlonie: May they did learn, but were taught wrong? And as far as being a noob commander? Well they got to start somewhere and get experience somehow right?

From OP’s description, they either didn’t know the mechanics, or were intentionally sabotaging the event.

If the latter, that would make them trolls.

My statement applies to the former — they should at least run it a few times and learn how the event works before tagging up.

Haha, so you are! I should check these things first >.<

I see from our roster that you’ve got a bit of leveling to do before you can start dungeons — we’ll gladly teach you AC story once you hit level 30, and the others once you unlock them

And since you mentioned gear, getting the best gear from dungeons takes a few runs to collect dungeon-specific tokens, and then there’s a vendor in Lion’s Arch that can exchange the tokens for level 80 exotics, or dungeon-level-appropriate rares. You’ll get a lot of level appropriate drops from a dungeon run, too, so that always helps.

Of course, in those days, I didn’t really game much. If I’d have gotten into MMOs while trying to carry everything else, I probably would have flunked out or gone insane or something shrugs

Anyway, I’ll stop rambling about the old days. To answer the question, yeah, I’ll be getting it, dungeons or no. Even if there’s not any content I’m really all that interested in, that’s where everyone I play with will be.

The ability to have multiple explanations available through a convenient and intuitive UI is very helpful, and can prevent the site from getting too narrowly focused on a specific set of strategies. Unless you are planning on leaving the game for good you should pick it up.

Agree with this.

There is absolutely no chance that an expansion comes out and dungeons and fractals are not touched.

This makes me laugh It’s completely possible that they’ve stopped working on small group instanced content — we already know that they’ve pulled their teams off of dungeon development since the Aetherflop, and they said in an interview some months ago that they had no existing plans for future dungeons. I won’t expect it until they say something. From an earlier thread:

I think it makes sense for them to add dungeons with HoT. I also thought it would make sense for them to put out more than one path and a few recycled FotM shards in two years. Hence my cynicism: Contrary to their famous statement, unless they explicitly confirm something, everything is off the table.

My guess? We’ll see new world bosses in HoT, and before/around the HoT release we’ll see some of the LS bosses added to FotM. No new themed multipath dungeon systems. Based on the gamescon interview and the rather conspicuous lack of details at the HoT unveiling, I think this fits what they’ve been saying best.

I honestly believe that if they were going to put in a new dungeon with HoT, they would have included it with the “major” features during the announcement.

God I hope I’m proven wrong.

These days it’s in DR near the statue of Dwayna.

I like it better than the one you mentioned because I can access my guild bank. Ever since they made Marriner’s WP in LA the most inconvenient place to get to in open world (WHY?!?!), this is the easiest spot to get to with a TP/bank/guild bank in close proximity.

Another good spot that a lot of people overlook is Ebonhawke in Fields of Ruin. It has a bank, a TP, and all crafting stations clustered together. If I ever need to do a ton of crafting, this is the place to be.

Lately I’ve been hanging out in Rata Sum, though, for easier access to my home instance nodes. It’s fairly convenient, too — TP, bank, guild bank, and crafting all reasonably close. I might make this my new spot, come to think of it

Besides, Asura RP is way more interesting to listen to than human RP. Filthy bookahs.

Engi gets my vote because it’s so crazy. By that I mean that there isn’t a simple order, with the way timers work you’re either leaving things on cooldown for quite some time, or you have to swap early to catch it, then back to something else, and ahhhh. For example Shrapnel is 5s, Blunderbuss is 10s, Flame Blast is 6s, acid bomb is 15s, jump shot 20s, freeze grenade is 20s, grenade barrage 27-30s. There’s not really a neat way to put those things together. Then add on if you use Hair Trigger, which is nice for bosses you want to keep immob going on, now your blunderbuss is 8s and jumpshot 16s. Fireforged Trigger, ohh Acid bomb is now 12s and flame blast < 5s.

So it’s interesting trying to maximize and attempt to keep all of that going in your head.

And my god…with three kits and a weapon, there’s always something off cooldown. I find the blasting methods to be more fun, too. Lots of timing to keep track of to make sure everything hits on time.

It’d be kittening wonderful if we didn’t have to wait for some big hyped up announcement to find out. For the life of me, I don’t know why they can’t just say “We know this is bad, and we’re working on it” in a timely manner and without all of the theatrics.

The only way to fix this at this point is for ArenaNet to add new content. Players have left because they got bored with the content and ArenaNet’s silence over the last year (or more) hasn’t really given them much reason to stick around.

HoT is now announced and on the way, all you can do is sit back, wait, and hope it’s not too little too late. I worry about my dungeon guild…they mentioned nothing about new dungeons at PAX :/

I’m in the same boat with my guild, though we’ve seen a bit of revived activity since the announcement over the weekend. My fingers are crossed that the returning players will still be around after a week. Unfortunately, experience says they won’t

The way he phrases that worries me. " If you haven’t played the jungle and you haven’t built up your character, you’re not going to beat that content." Sounds like good ol’ gear treadmill type thing.

Same here. Instead of a gear treadmill, they’re adding a mastery treadmill? At least the account wide unlocks will make this bearable.

The way i took it was that going through the jungle teaches you how to deal with various new mechanics. So you are prepared for the complex encounters with a mix of all the previous stuff you went through. Kind of like how they did the hidden arcana LS instance where they taught you the different puzzles one by one and then put them all together. But then again i might just be being overly optimistic.

I think you are being optimistic :-) The phrase “built up your character” implies more than just learning mechanics to me.

I think it makes sense for them to add dungeons with HoT. I also thought it would make sense for them to put out more than one path and a few recycled FotM shards in two years. We were maybe intentionally vague when we didn’t talk about what types of content you’re going to experience specifically in the jungle, but the most important messages we want people to take from today are that you’re going to be able to explore a new area, and we know that Guild Wars 2 needs more challenging encounters and more challenging group encounters, and it needs extremely challenging encounters for groups to build up to and defeat. 1) This post will be deleted soon for showing the names of the people who kicked you. “Naming and Shaming”, as they call it, are against forum rules.
2) You’ll never hear anything from ArenaNet about it, except maybe a notice about the deleted post and possibly an infraction.
3) If you filed a report in game, there is a small, small chance a GM will bother to look into it.

If (3) happens and they find some evidence that they stole the run and sold it for profit, they might give them, at most, a 72 hour suspension.

There are known griefers who have been doing this for months on end. They’re all still in game.

Gold sellers get immediate permabans. Dungeon stealers get slaps on the wrist. I wish ArenaNet took stealing from us as seriously as they take stealing from them.

If you didn’t list it to sell, then I’m not sure, but again, if it was just one spot empty, it wasn’t the newcomer that kicked you — it was the other players in your party. One player cannot kick anyone by themselves.

You can create surveys/polls with google drive, and it creates a webpage for people to come fill them out. You can even connect it to a spreadsheet and have it automatically fill the spreadsheet with the responses.

Pretty neat.

I don’t normally do dungeons but if I was to make an optimal group…

1: Banner Warrior, regen +stats
2: Crit warrior, might sharing (never done this, but they must bring 10 stacks)
3: Crit warrior, for another 10 stacks
4: Hammer Guard, perm protection, 5 stacks of might (shared) healing symbols
5: Whatever…

*p.s. no necros… not even in slot 5….

The first 3 slots can be fulfilled by one warrior. When I play my Warrior (rare), I bring 3 banners (Warbanner, Disc and Str) and stack 25 might for all nearby members in about 3s of combat.

But where’s the regen? (/s)

I do not understand why did this have to become into a fight

Welcome to the Dungeon forums! We can turn absolutely anything into a fight!

Kudos to you all guys for writing your guides. All guides are all useful in their own way and chances are plenty of other guild forums have their own guides written for their own members too. There’s no reason why many guides can’t exist and still be useful in their own way.

QFT.

That said, Weth does have a very valid point that it is best to have a single “go-to” resource that everyone knows about and keeps up to date. It’s absolutely fine to have your own guide if you want to produce one in your own style, but we’d appreciate it if you could take a few minutes to see if you have anything to add/correct from the gw2dungeons.net guide. It really has become “the” resource for GW2 instanced PvE

It’s up to Weth whether he feels a desire to maintain it, but it might be worthwhile to add some links to other guides, assuming it wouldn’t be too much trouble. Something similar to the builds tab, where it has a set of links to other sources of information.
