Thanks Sam for this post, i have posted a similar topic to underline the HoT pvp.
Devs have seriously to understand that pvp balance between each professions is not when only one build is viable in pvp. Always nerf a build up another etc etc
To have a real robus balance in pvp they have to:

1) balance elite professions and old ones
2) balance all skills and traits in a same profession, all traits have to be competitive. A traits is a way to play, we are not forced to take one.
3) balance profession between them.

In pvp there are not just 6 competitive professions but 6 builds, with quasi same skills, same traits, same weapon!!!! Why all profession are not represented?
Why all trait line are not all represented?
And please, when you up or nerf a class in pvp just think about the repercusion in pve. Because you have uped the berserker dps in pvp recently but is it really neccessary in pve ? You will certainly down the ingi hammer dps in pvp for example , but it will be kill the pve engi hammer.

You have to work a lot in the game satbilization and balance. We are done with those nerf/up/nerf/up and this unbalance game .

About war and thief

HoT pvp, 2 months before, any conclusion, suggestions?

I have tried all the elite spe in both pvp and pve and my conclusion are pessimistic:

- war and thief: the idea of the elite spe are not bad but actually those are not usefull because of the tones of AOE in the game. All the spe have got so much Aoe Cc, blind, frost, weakness, condi etc etc that the game is not really skilled. People in pvp just spam Aoe without real focus and will see the first opponent that will die… Where is the skill here? With all those AOE, rogue and war are muffled. Just see your recount, so often 50% of my life gone just with Aoe of a person that doesn t focus me.
All the strong elite actually have really good Aoe both offensive and defensive:

+ tempest: aoe cc, heal, dispel, condi, damage, boons, utility
+ drood: aoe cc, heal, dispel, condi, damage
+ rev: aoe cc, damage, condi, boons
+ scrapper: aoe cc, damage, condi, boons, dispel
+ dh: aoe cc, damage, boon, condi
+ necro: aoe cc, condi, damage, utility
+ chrono: aoe cc, condi, damage, utility, heal

Both thief and war have some good spots: damage, condi etc but they can t easily spam aoe blind, frost, weakness, slow, snare etc they just eat and die. This my ele i can play all the game without targeting anyone and do a lot of damage, heal, cc, boon share. And it´s not normal. I hate playing thief it´s not my taste but i really enjoy plaing against a good thief really skilled, there is a real challenge, but now in pvp they can go nothing, just dodge and hit, they take a lot of aoe condi…

- Testing war and thief: i have realized that gw2 pvp have LOST a lot level with HOT. What is a player skill for you??? Have a good mastery of your profession? The spell gestion? What is the real skill?
In gw2 pvp many time the skill is just finding a good professions, build, team, strat. No really the gestion of the caracter. When you see pro league player, do you seen amazing player or just good builds, and good strats? When i see wow are a pro players or Lol players i see amazing pro gamers. It´s not the case in gw2.
Why??
1) in gw2 the profession, the build, stat are more important than the player skill. For example: a bad reaper can easily eat a good berserker,

2) real unbalance between professions, between profession tree lines, between traits. Normally traits are just a way to play but its not a case some traits are useless others are mandatory.

Finally, i have discussed with friend about gw2 pvp and wow pvp to compare. In wow, we find in pvp a real skill, you have to target friends, ennemis, to cc a cast in a precise time, to coordinate cc, dps with friends to take down an healer, etc. In gw2 HOT just spam AOE cc, condi, heal, damage, and finish the target.
In gw2, when you kill an ennemy always you can read “noob it´s because your profession is OP”, and it´s not so false. I want to play pvp and show my own skill, not my build!

Any suggestions to improve the pvp skill? Not just nerf a thing, nerf another etc etc a constructive dial.

Do you realize that 5 energy on coalescence of ruin for 2 sec cd and 5 for phase smash for 8 sec is nothing? Where is the energy managment with just 5 energy cost?

Why not allowing to players a certain amount of point that they can spent between the different caracteristics? The point is to decide how much point, because in thy way cele will be nerf (more point actually than the others) but the diversity of builds Will be improve. But this idea have to be worked with some limitations to limit the ultra tanky builds (like minestrel stat) or the running of one or two stats.

Actually it is worst with more represented professions??? The balance of a game for me is when all professions could be competitive and it is actually most the case.
I agree with “the goal is to have a balanced game”, but before hot there were just thieves. War, guard, ele and it was normal.
To balance the 3 last professions, it is neccessary to reduce the damage drasticly and to give them more team tools but is it the players wish? As i said players have cried to build 3 damage oriented spe.

Hello guys, just a short discussion about the HoT meta. With the ESL pro league synthesis, we have seen that thieves and war arent represented, DH are not over represented too. Therefore, a lot of them have posted “up thief , war and Dh”.

I want to say here, during the 2 years before HoT lauch pvp meta was clear: guard, war, thief (and ele). And it was normal… If you are ingi, necro, mesmer, ranger it was hard to catch a place in a team. I don t talk here about pve, because it was worst:

“lf ele, thief, war, guard for pve”
- hey i join with my ingi, i have a really good dps ok?
- do you have a war or guard
- yes but i want to play my main ingi
- sorry find another group
Etc etc

Actually, there is diversity in pvp and the elite have pushed up a lot of profession into the meta, so thanks Anet. Two professions are norepresented actually and 4 before HoT, so it is better actually.

Guys, you had never been worry about others professions, it was normal that just yours was op. Now it is the opposite, why we have to be worry?
The first time that the game is unbalanced is when thieves and warrior are not in the top tier? Bur the game is not just war and thieves.

Actually Scrapper, Druid, Tempest, Chrono, Reaper and Herald are used because of their team play (buff, condi, cc, support etc).
You have built 3 professions around damage, damage and damage, this is why berserk, DH and thieves are not used. You want a high personnal dps without team utility, it´s cool, but don t complain about pvp team meta.

If Anet buff war, thief, guard and nerf the others drasticlly, they dont understand the message explained here.
Another time thanks for the incredible elite spec!

How to evaluate what is OP

What is op is what is overrepresented (see mandatory for success) in high level pvp.
In this definition everybody will admit :
1) Revenant is OP as hell
2) Tempest & Engi are coming after
3) Mesmer is not in a bad spot
4) Dragon hunter is in poor spot (not so surprisingly for me)
5) Warrior has disapeared
6) It is not worth talking about vanilla classes (due to classical opness of last stuff delivered on grindy mmo games)

Do you play DH? Or it´s a joke?
Because i see always 1 or 2 DH per team and they have all the time a really important impact on the bg.

Scrapper is fine because engi is fine. Gyros are quasi not used, the hammer is really fine. The new mecanic is not really fun. A lot of time it´s hard to revive guys with the gyros (targeting allies is strange), stomp guys is also buged. Others elites have really nice new mecanic that change the profession so they have to rework the mecanic…

God tier: Herald, Dragon Hunter, Druid
Good tier: Scrapper, Reaper, Chronomancer, tempest
Viable tier: Daredevil
Not viable tier: Berserker

My ranking is bases on the utility of a profession in a pvp team, the presence in the fight, the survivability/damage ratio. In a big fight, the druid presence is really oppressive (cc, heal, dispel, snare, slow, etc). Same for the Dh (cc, defensive boons, group boons, traps etc). For the Herald is the ratio damage/survivability that is amazing (the guy cold spam the sword #1 and kill you).

Berserker could have a really important damage (rifle/ gs) but the ratio survi/damage is not high and his presence too.

Let's talk about balancing Dragonhunter!

Becareful of what you ask for. When Anet nerf things, they tend to destroy builds. Players will always use the best builds. If it’s not Dragonhunter, it’ll be Burn Meditation Guardian again. I hate to see classes get nerfed to the point that players switch their main, like what we are seeing with Warriors. Players complain about Hambow, then adrenaline nerfed happen, then shoutbow, another nerf to shouts, then it was rampage warrior complaints, well that’s nerfed too. Now warriors got nothing left. That’s why I don’t support nerfs, I want them to buff other professions and give them means to counter. I rather all professions have many viable builds to use, like mesmers do.

Arena should focus on making must-have traits baselines so that it free up more build diversity.

Totally agree, i am not playing Dh but the nerf is not the way. If guard enjoy Dh is fine. anet has to work on the others elite spe to balance all the game then people will enjoy too their respective elite.

3k damage with the air overload? The ele run a zerk build so just one shot him and the problem is finish. Guys it´s hard to overload an element, you can esayli controle the ele or just go out of area. If you wan to speak about broken things with have a serious subject with a certain class

Tempest is the only one spe woth a bad new weapon. Mesmer àd revenant shield are amazing, dh bow is great. Staff drood is really good, reaper greatsword is fine, thief staff is ok and hammer ingi is mesmerizing. We can discuss about berserker brcause the weapon is not so bad but no usefull. So they have to do such a thing with this warhorn.
A lot of long cast, in fire attunement there is a great zone but just for pve (too long to pop).
Water is fine (with a dispel in the 5 it would be relu better).
Air, hum it´s really strange for idea. The globe is really strange.
Earth is fine but it miss an immune. When we compare, focus or dagger are really better than warhorn… It´s not normal.

Love tempest (pvp) Please don't nerf it.

I think he doesnot played against good necro, guards, thieves etc. Because the ait overload is usefull but all good teams sytop your cast a lot of times is not a sure spell.

Dh all the time say “just learn to dodge traps” but pvp is not 1v1. You have to dodge traps, chrono wells etc etc and after two dodges… You are lock with one trap, another invisible barrier block you, your cast is kick by daze, and finally you die. Oh i have played a lot of times DH to understand traps and learn to counter them but there are too op. If you dodge the elite trap but another player does not do it, what happened? You are in the traps and ready to die by the dh team. So stop repeat all the time " just learn to counter" and admit that the traps are so op!

It´s not constructive when is a Dh that answer. Stop talking like the Dh traps are balanced and with juSt one dodge we can kill a DH. If DH is nothing without defenses why a third of players run it? You can admit that this elite is really op. Heavy armor, high defense via stab, aegis, high healing , high damage, mobility. Sorry but you are not constructive.

Hello everyone, first i want to thanks the dev for the work done so far, Hot is amazing so far.
In this topic i do?t want to discuss pve but just pvp.
I have done a lot of pvp during this first week and i enjoy it a lot.
All elite are really cool and really good. The pvp balance is close the perfection in my opinion, all classes are strong and need a certain skill.
I want to talk about dragonhunter: a lot of guard do?t like the elite skin so all the time the cry and cry during the beta weeks. So the dev listen because guard is the most played class in the game, and the buff, buff and buff the elite. Actually in pvp DH is the unique unbalanced classe. The main reason is traps. CDd are not much, a lot of damages (6k the last damage of a trap), access to stab and aegis a lot of times, block ennemis etc.
Also, with traits, Dh can dazr you with traps, reduce the cd, proc traps if someone cc him, stab, aegis etc. Oh, i forget, the trapper rune in pvp, “when you put a trap you gain steath” with no cd.
Traps are a way to help the Dh not to oneshot other players, to give a tone of stab, aegis, fury, might etc etc.

Just come in pvp and you will see, the Dh put the traps you dodge to activate it but the occurs during 6 to 8 sec. So he could def the point, you wait and he puts others traps etc etc.
My objectif is not to cry or to want a classe to be op but to achieve a real balance. I read a lot of post and patch during these 9 mounths before the lauch and i do?t like the guardians mind. All the time the had cried, and finally the devs listened and up the classes. If guardS do?t like the elite skin, they have to change the profession or stat as guard. But, arena net, by creating an overpowered Dh you will kill the pvp.
People dont like Dh style, it s not a reason to give us godlike traps.
I know it s a launch but after a traps nerf guard will cry and you will up traps another time etc etc.

God stop cry. All the time you say “DH suks…” And after they up the DH at this moment DH is so op. All time time first in pvp, traps are amazing, with controle (daze, etc) high damage, and snare, buff. The bow does so good damage. Atm DH is an horror in pvp and pve for all the other classes. So stop crying, if you do?t like the skin don t play it.

Anet has created two ways to do damage: condi and direct damage. During a long time, just the second way was viable to do damage. But with a certain patch, condi was made viable too and zerker guys, who have to rebuild, or to loose dps using dispel cry. It is really certain that burning is intense actually but stop think about 1v1. When you do some big fight with a lot of cleanse mates, you do 0 damage with condi. Take the rev or necro for example, they can make minimim 13k direct damege with one spell (1sec cast, 1 sec after cast), ok so stop wine and take dispel.

Yesterday, the said that each new legendary precursors are obtainable with this same masteri system.

Hello guys, first of all congratulations for the job done. I am a bit sad because of the end of the elite news (i liked do some speculations:)) but can ´t wait for HoT. I have a tone of good comments and propositions. I enjoy the rev during this beta but there are some issues:
- concerning the weapons: the “cristal hibernation” is problematic because of the lack of mobility. The rev doesn ´t have a lot of weapon choices but the existent ones are now really good. I also feel that the secondary hand cost a lot of energy (but it´s my personnal feeling).

-concerning the legend: i agree with all of the previous comments, now malyx is not so funny, is repetitive. It´s really important to keep the condition copy mechanic in “embrace the darkness”. Also can we imagine for “unyielding anguish” a mechanic that the teleport is just for players and not for mobs. I understand that in pve it s hard to use but this spell is really important in pvp, it was the unique way to escape with malyx.
Ventari is hard to play but the concept is really fun.
Shiro/herald are really strong legends.
The last one jalys seems good but when you play it you are dissappointed (50 energy for the elite, a long cast, short duration). It´s not a reactive legend that you can play in a hard situation.

-concerning the traits: the previous changments are good but it subsits some issues.
For the salvation traits, all outging healing boost trait don t work.
For the herald, the last traits seems too low for an elite spe. “Soothing bastion” it s good but you just die after it. “Enhanced bulwark” without jalyx or “unwavering avoidance” is useless and i m not conviced by the “elder ´s force trait”.
For the corruption traits, “venom enhancement” is a good idea but the cd seems a bit high.
For the invocation traits, i regret to don ´t find more oriented legend traits. The traits are just general and the not focusing on improving legend swith (reducing the time, adding more energy when you switch etc).
Devastation is a solid tree!!
For the retribution i m perplexe and don t like the traits so i can t make a subjective analysis.
