i dont have a lot of time to post, so ill just address one thing.

the combat system. i personally enjoy it. while its not the end all be all and certainly has room for improvement, its certainly a step up from the old hit table system. never could understand things like why my character would only have a chance to block x amount of incoming damage, or why my character would need things like hit rating or expertise when he/she is supposed to be some sort of fantasy hero or something. always seemed stupid and its good to at least see that it isnt there and is replaced by some mitigation that the player has control over. i find moving around a lot fun. just makes things more interesting. in other MMOs i would just jump to have something to do other than spam the same two or three keys over and over again.

Thoughts on Ascended Gear? [Merged threads]

basically, this is pretty much what would happen if in a major WoW patch, blizzard removes raids, dungeons and gear progression with little to no warning.

people would be incredibly mad and probably stop playing. players dont like it when you change principles on them behind their backs.

My friend played the dungeon and passed some difficulty levels and says he didn’t encounter any agony condition yet. So he said he won’t be needing the new gear. So is it really mandatory?

its mandatory to progress further in the dungeon and depending on the direction Anet takes, it may become mandatory to stay up to par in WvW, since the more hardcore WvW guilds will likely farm the new gear to get the advantage. of course, this will equalize things out to some extent, but it could exclude several players who did not want to do this grind. it could also exclude players from seeing future dungeons and content if it becomes a requirement for those. this whole change has the potential to cause all kinds of damage.

also, it seems like most everyone is in the new zone, zerging it up. not surprising considering a lot of the mobs around there dont seem very solo-player friendly.

ego stroking leads to elitism which leads to not allowing anyone to do the content.
wont be long before we see “lfm insert dungeon here ascended gear only plz”
sure skill gates disallow this as well, but as long as there is content for people who dont care about being the best and jsut want to have fun, it should all be good. its like the difference between random sPvP games and paid tournaments.

and then “lfm whatever 66k gearscore only plz”

sure im a massive elitist jerk. i tell people how to play all the time. but its better than being an elitist jerk over gear.

making the gear matched with content is boring. seriously. when your group is geared to the point that even the hardest content is on farm, then its completely pointless. to be able to go back and still be challenged is a lot more interesting than to left one shotting boss after boss after like 2 weeks of farming gear. been there done that. unless they just make difficulty scale up with stats, in which case would be pretty much the same as just never moving the stat ceiling.

i always feel that with gear based progression, games then become glorified spreadsheet simulators. if i wanted to that, id launch microsoft excel and put in random numbers all day. that or auction house simulators. depends on the approach.

but whatever, we’ll see where all this go. for all we know, this could be a massive PR stunt or something outside of Anet’s control.

the thing is, Anet never marketed GW2 to the gear grind people. just the people who liked what GW did or the people fed up with the traditional MMO model.

and really, the whole thing boils down to an ethical issue than anything else.

simple solution: treat WvW’s gear and traits in the same way as sPvP’s. give a seperate set of gear and traits but keep gaining exp instead of rank points. why they never did this from the start is beyond me, especially considering how much importance they seem to put on the concept of balance.

Different people acquire skill at different rates, while gear can be farmed at a fairly equal rate

which is why farming for gear is completely unimpressive. anyone who can organize a group together can do it. it seriously gets boring if the content is easy enough that you can claim to have a boss on farm. the ah-ha moment of actually figuring something challenging out is far more rewarding than getting your +10 stam +10 strength leather belt. especially when you know that everyone has the same tools available to them. once again, its how you use your tools, not what they are that should be important. im sure if FPS games started making a gear grind to get a +100 accuracy sniper rifle would make people who can quick scope seem entirely unimpressive.

having the best gear in the game available to everyone at only a small time commitment makes doing challenging things with it a lot more interesting.

as a side note, i dont care how gear looks 99% of the time. im just happy with the crafted exotic gear. if anything, becoming more powerful is just another way of saying “i like stroking my ego.” or compensating for something.

because in Anet’s previous game, GW1, people werent rewarded with raising the stat ceiling. just better looking gear and titles. which was enough for everyone who played. on top of that, with every new campaign, new skills were added. the level cap was never raised and the stat ceiling remained static. thats what i was hoping would have happened with GW2, have the gear with the best stats relatively easy to get to keep a level playing ground and only change the cosmetics.

also, skill based progression would be a lot more challenging than “here you go, better stats.” id rather (and im sure most of the people on this game) would rather be tested as an individual player and overcome something difficult without the potential crutch of better gear. being able to outgear things is never fun and discourages backward compatibility. when i played WoW, it was always disappointing that i would never be able to experience older content that i never got to considering how late i started playing, in the way it was meant to be experienced. the static stat ceiling ensures that all content stays relevant and challenging regardless. oh sure, the game scales your level down, but that is only base stats, it never scales your gear down, which is why with with full exotics, you can go around a starting zone and 2 shot things just as easily if they didnt scale you down.

if the difficulty of things is amplified, then skill does in fact become a bigger factor than gear. really wish more MMO’s would take that into consideration rather than just allow players to gear their way through something. “oh we didnt down that boss? no worries, we have the past 3 on farm, we’ll just kill them and gear up for this one.”

if everything was difficult and gear was hardly a determining factor, i know i for one would want to stick around. of course, not impossibly difficult, but enough to require that you know your class well, know the combat system well and how the game itself works. same in PvP (which is fortunately already like that). in other games, especially WoW, gear plays such a huge role in PvP that if you dont have at least the current arena seasons basic gear, you may as well not PvP at all. ive been there. its incredibly annoying when people who are more or less awful at the game still get through only because they meet the gear requirements, even just barely. of course, if playing competitively isnt your thing, then the devs should cater to that as well, make not as challenging but still fun content. there doesnt need to be a gear treadmill to satisfy even the hardcore players. it was something that was never needed in the genre to begin with, but someone somewhere thought it was a good idea and it stuck.

while i dont like the new changes, i think its an overreaction to immedietly jump to your feet and assume that they are intending on putting a gear treadmill as steep as the likes of WoW’s (or even worse, that of a korean grindfest mmo).

im willing to see where things go and wait for an official response from Anet rather than run around declaring its the end of the world or that the end is near.

this may all boil down to something that only looks like theyre going against their manifesto and in the end be nothing. or this may be a move not motivated by Anet themselves but NCsoft or Nexon. it would explain the silence on Anet’s part. but all we can do is speculate and see where things go. or overreact, uninstall and demand a refund.

My point of comparing to Call of duty was that in order to maintain a playerbase who enjoys the competitive aspects of the game, it has to stay level for the playing field. constant and new gear grinds kills that

in that case, yes. but other games manage to find a niche, something i was hoping GW2 would be capable of

but who knows, maybe this isnt as bad as we think it is. im willing to wait it out and see what happens, give Anet at least some benefit of doubt. after all, they do have a rather impeccable 7 year track record with GW1. and by all means i am not saying i am particularly happy with this sudden change but i am willing to see where it goes.

The people who left because there wasnt “enough to do” arent worth anyones time, do people stop playing Call of duty because “they played all the maps.” No, they keep playing because its a (mostly) balanced competitive game that puts people on a balanced system and lets them have FUN. you think any FPS/RTS would last if one guy got things other people didnt have?

It is interesting that you bring up Call of Duty, since the same thing that just happened to GW2 trying to cater to the WoW fans happens to FPS games trying to cater to Call of Duty fans.

They marginalize the aspects of the game that make it unique and implement changes to make it more like Call of Duty and end up with a cheap clone of Call of Duty. The players that liked it for what it was are alienated and leave.

Eventually, the Call of Duty fans go back to Call of Duty. I don’t recall a game where things got better after the changes…

if we’re comparing this, then why hasn’t TF2 gone full CoD copycat? and i’m pretty sure if valve did that, a lot of people would stop playing.

just like how if Anet starts making such drastic changes to GW2 to make it more like WoW, then people who play GW2 for its GW2ness will all leave after being driven away. and the people who wanted more WoW like stuff will all go back to WoW after realizing that blizzard has more or less a monopoly on that style of MMO.

so either way, all of this can be harmful to GW2. and therefore be harmful to Anet.

WvW is great. No need to visit the dungeon for best loot. Chris already stated that the new tier (ascended) will be available in WvW also.

note he didnt say when. if yet another tier of gear comes out after ascended, this could happen when ascended goes out of date. other games do this often, make the previous tier super easy to get when its outdated.

The WoW devs finally realize a large percentage of there player base wasn’t even experiencing this content and eventually they fixed it, forgot what they did.

probably the dungeon finder, and later on the raid finder. they realized people weren’t getting a chance to see the biggest part of pve and made it accessible to pretty much anyone who was able to meet a relatively easy to meet gear requirement.

and i agree, i think it is possible to say that eventually GW2 could turn into a group of haves and have nots. elitist PvE guilds who won’t look twice at you if you dont have full whatever gear. next thing you know, we’ll have guilds with applications on their websites to join. i really don’t see whats wrong with having static max level gear and get rid of the whole best in slot mentality.

Seriously, the people in this thread act like a slight increase in stats is an absurdity that should never ever happen, but guess what? IT IS ALREADY IN THE GAME. I’m going to repost something that has been swallowed by this enormous thread of absolute madness:

“My thoughts on this topic: there is already a “treadmill” in place you start off with white quality gear and end up (at 80) still getting white level gear aswell as blue yellow and finally orange and purple (or blue… w/e legendary is). If they intended for zero gear progression they would have either;

A.) Made white quality gear “max” and then you would only have to look for gear you like the looks of. (rather boring in my opinion)
B.) Have each “tier” of gear level specific i.e. white is 1-19 blue is 20-39 yellow is 40-59 and then exotic’s/legendary and w/e else would be 60-80 or what have you. Also make each “tier” only drop from those level zones or creatures or whatever…

The system that is in place now is, I repeat IS a gear treadmill of sorts, smoothly pulled off so it doesn’t really feel like one but it is. You don’t start off with max armor and thus have to gear yourself up. Sure it doesn’t take long and sure once you’ve maxed your gears you only need to upgrade looks (well until this patch hits…)."

yea but every MMO at least has this, and no one really looks at it as a treadmill. its just part of the leveling process.

what is bothersome is that Anet seems to be intent on doing this with level 80 stuff, something every other MMO has ever done, only because people decided to clear through content in a matter of weeks.

i liked the idea of relatively easy to get top end gear (exotics), i mean farming gold for a while isn’t too bad to buy it off the trading post. i liked the fact that it is somewhat easy to get and makes it so everyone has the oppurtunity to have the best gear in the game and have it statted for their particular build. its freeing, unlike the system in which you neurotically feel you need to upgrade every patch, or arena season just to stay competitive. i liked the fact that it made the players who are good at the game, good with the mechanics and the way things work stand out and not the ones who spent x amount of time getting the best gear in the game. makes it possible to put content in that requires actual skill and knowledge of the game to beat rather than content you can just outgear.

what im saying is, individual skill should take precedence in progression, not gear. this is something MMOs never seem to get over, despite other games (FPS comes to mind) in which it isnt a factor. (take COD or MW for example. everyone gets the same sniper rifle, but some of them are bad at it and others are able to quick scope everyone in sight) i was hoping GW2 would actually take more of this system in mind (they do with sPvP, as long as they dont change anything) seriously. take any other MMO. im just going to take WoW because its the only one i know well enough to look at. i can assure you that if you take the two best arena teams in the world, give one of them crappy quality PvP gear and give the other the latest season elite gear, the one in the superior gear will win at least 9 times out of 10. with GW2, i would say this never happens.

and this is really why im against this. i wanted (and im sure a lot of other people) wanted a game in which you could simply get the best gear in the game, have it all relatively balanced and identical, and let people who are good at it stand out. and thats what the devs made it seem like we were getting, something to be different than the other MMOs and not force us all to grind to death. im not saying im going to quit or anything, im willing to give all this new stuff a chance and see where it goes, im just disappointed that the biggest selling point this game had that appealed to a lot of people seems to be overlooked or swept under the rug.

the problems that dont exist you mean? the problems that arent even in the game yet? riight. overreacting whiners are amusing.

it has nothing to do with the problems that are in or that will result.

bottom line, only reason why everyone is complaining is because Anet seems to have gone full 180 degrees on everyone by potentially implying that there will be a gear treadmill, something they said they resent and had no intention on putting in during development.

may as well put in my ten cents

the way i see it, some people are overreacting when they say that the game has become entirely stat based. i think the stats are important to an extent, only to make individual builds work, since this isnt a game in which you are stuck playing your class in one of 3 or 4 different ways. so to that extent, they do have a place.

however they dont need to be increased. when i started playing, from WoW, i was impressed with the fact that there was a top tier of gear that was easily obtainable. i feel that this encourages individual skill over how geared someone is. gear progression never seemed to be a good idea to me. it seemed to simply make games boring. having flat constant stats on gear anyone could realistically obtain makes more sense, allowing the player to gear to their build and not have to worry about having to upgrade at any point, unless they wanted to upgrade how they look.

basically what im saying is that more developers, with Anet potentially leading the way, MMO’s should stop glorifying gear and numbers and instead glorify and reward individual skill, in which ever way the player wants to play the game. find something their good at and reward them with that. or something.

player input always seems to be a double edged sword. it works good in some cases, and not so good in others.

however with something as broad and with the potential of opening a pandora’s box as the new gear, they could have at least looked for some player opinions. if i remember correctly, i dont recall seeing many threads in here asking about gear progression, as it was something that seemed to be frowned upon by the development team and as far as i can tell this decision seems to come from people getting exotic gear “too fast.” something that really shouldn’t be an issue, at least its giving players a chance to get to a more level playing field.

what could work is if ArenaNet created some public test servers to see how broad changes could potentially play out in the live game. this is something that is done elsewhere and not only catches a lot of bugs and the likes but can also give a glimpse of how changes could play out.

im not disagreeing with that. in fact i find that Anet’s design philosophy to difficult boss fights is something along the lines of “give it lots of health and hit really hard. which will then drag the fight out.”

no, it’s not interesting. yes the lack of mechanics is disappointing when compared to other games. but this doesn’t mean that they won’t fix it.

i’ll admit, i’ve only done a few of the dungeons on explorable mode but still, they are relatively easy. at least the boss fights are.

as a side note, that doesn’t mean that jurassic park is a bad movie. in fact the effects are still spot on, and in some cases, more convincing than that of today’s. i guess i’ll let that speak for itself. sort of.

i would say necro’s are underpowered, but i changed my mind about that when i started using an axe/warhorn semi-glass-canon build. the 2 ability on the axe hits incredibly if its allowed to and especially when you use spectral wall or well of suffering to get around 10-15 stacks of vunerability. it ramps up damage as it casts, and there have been times in pvp that i have seen the last 1 or 2 hits crit for 6k, which when combined with the rest of the damage puts the total anywhere from 10-15k

as mentioned before, gear is completely trivial in gw2. its so similar across the board that there isnt much to be an elitist about. on top of that, the fact that every single profession is incredibly dynamic and there isnt the entire trinity system, it opens the possibility to gear and spec more or less how you want, or what works for your playstyle.

when i was using 80 rare gear i was doing almost as much damage and able to take almost as much damage as i do with my exotic set. this isnt like wow where if you’re say a warrior and you’re not speccing into strength you’re not going to have a good time. the simplistic stats mean that there are no such things as any of this. if you want to be a glass cannon, there’s a build for all the classes to do that. if you want to balance defense and offense, there’s a build for all the classes and a set of stats you would want for that.

the only thing anyone can even be remotely elitist about this game is skill. since gear is so more or less the same, the only thing that’s really left is individual ham handedness, and there isn’t any real way to inspect that. gw2 isnt a game that’s really about knowing stats, but rather knowing your class, knowing what abilities do what and knowing how the combat system works. i don’t see a problem with being able to inspect in gw2.

this game is still in infancy.

Lol @ all people chanting “it’s a young game give it time” etc. newsflash! People don’t really want to buy a game and have to wait half a year for it to catch up to current standards.

People have every right to judge the game in it’s current state.

implying that WoW was any different when it first came out. other than the fact that it would set standards, as far i know, it wasn’t nearly where it is now. blizz has had nearly 10 years to perfect WoW. Anet is almost in the same boat considering that they are starting with a new template rather than just saying “hey lets clone WoW for the nine billionth time”

In WoW, you are stuck running the same dungeons over and over

You mean like in this game then, only that the dungeons are not as well designed and the boss encounters are more simplistic.

once again, WoW’s dungeons in infancy were simplistic in design. boss fights hardly had anywhere near as many mechanics as they do now in that game. ok, so it took 40 people for some of them. the only real challenge was coordinating and getting 40 people to move all at the same time and do what was needed.

in actuality, there is hardly any point in comparing the two games. they’re two completely different beasts and Anet has constantly said that they weren’t making this game to compete with anything or to be another clone of another game.

I, personally, feel that outside of a Well build we are really lacking combo fields and we are lacking finishers in general (even the ones we do have can be annoying to use like Bone Minions and Putrid Mark).

I think some places for combo skills are

  • Warhorn (OH) – Wail of Doom – Whirl

  • Axe (MH) – Unholy Feast – Blast
  • Scepter (MH) – Grasping Dead – Dark Field

Anyways, those are just some thoughts that I had.

i cant even begin to state how frustrating this is. i run with a scepter and focus, staff as my secondary. i use a lot of wells, and spec’d into the targetable well trait finding it easy to slow and kite mobs through the well (especially well of suffering, thing hits like a truck) but its just so disappointing that with those two weapons not a single one of their abilities sets off a combo. here i can have up to 4 combo fields and nothing useful coming from them unless i switch to staff. i look at other classes and see them getting combos left and right when they assist me. feels really debilitating.

as for OP’s post. pet controls would be amazing. i completely stopped using minions because their AI is just pathetic. on top of this, they die way too easily, especially the blood fiend. 90% of the time my minions are either standing around (especially the golem and the shadow fiend) or attacking random destructible objects. sure they can completely wreck a target when they’re all attacking but getting to do that is frustrating.

overall, damage feels a little lacking and it makes me wonder if the intent for the necro was to be a more support class, providing some healing abilities and plenty of condition to boon and condition removing effects.

well i think gw2 is not really balanced for 1 vs 1 dueling battles though.

yea it is. look at all the videos on youtube of 1v1’s. its actually pretty dynamic.

By giving the classes defined roles or builds, it goes some way to helping fix the unispiring boss mechanics and zerg mentality gameplay, two of the biggest factors that really kill what is otherwise a great game.

i actually do agree with this. if not giving each class more a defined support damage or control role, at least do it with the trait lines. to me, it does seem that there are some traits that are more designed to do one thing or another. it just doesnt feel as if they are as well defined as they could be. what they were trying to do was make things so all classes could perform and contribute to each role, but i wouldnt see the harm in putting more emphasis on role in a class

The Holy Trinity has always been silly. Players have grown so accostumed to it they don’t even think logically about it anymore.
Pulling and Threat – what sense do they make, honestly?
What makes you think a being would chase you around a corner?
What makes you think a being would ignore those who are hurting him the most just because of your insults?

no doubt this is true. whenever i would think more realistically about any encounter i did when i played WoW (from late wrath literally up until GW2 came out), it was always a more epic sort of battle, the boss or whatever charging up and down about the party and not focusing on just one little guy. or even trash pulls, you’d think that after 6 years, trash in that game would be smart enough to exclusively target healers (wait, nevermind. most players in battlegrounds couldn’t figure that out either)

it is a nice change to see something a little more realistic, but it does not cancel out the need for a greater definition of at least some roles. for instance, put in the trait trees some sort of description highlighting what the tree does best, whether it be stacking conditions, dealing direct damage, providing more support in terms of boons and combo fields or just plain old healing. i think that would certainly clear up a lot of the confusion and other problems.

i think its a breath of fresh air if anything. to me its certainly more realistic. i dont really think that if you were to take any sort of situation that any mmo boss fight in real life that it would simply sit and bash on only one or two targets. id rather see the dragon/demon/giant/whatever go about smashing at everyone in the group and not just oddly focus on just one little person.

yea yea, i know mmos are supposed to be “realistic” or anything, but i really think that this system is a little better. it allows for each individual to show their own worth by not only contributing to the death of the target but also in their own ability to keep themselves alive and provide support in any way, whether it be some healing to others, combo fields or buffs for the group.

sure it has its inherent flaws but really i think these can be overlooked if given the chance. im sure the holy trinity system used in most games has its flaws too

but im not going to sit here and try to convince you otherwise, different strokes for different folks i guess. if the trinity is your thing, maybe check out other games. but really i think the current combat system is here to stay for GW2. it is, afterall, something ANet has been mentioning since the game was in development. and who knows, maybe this could become a sort of trend in other games. maybe someone else will take up the idea one day and perfect until it becomes a system that works as well as the trinity system of other mmos.

yea, i assume this is a bug in the AI.

giving them more control would really be nice and may even be a sort of work around.

it’d be nice to have a target of target function of some sort. at least just on npc’s to see who its attacking.

i honestly don’t see what this sort of function is not included. i understand that it wasn’t in gw1. it would seriously make things just a little bit easier. and i dont see how it would cause massive problems.

i’m sure this has brought up at least once before, but here goes nothing..

necromancer pets are complete morons. especially the flesh golem and the shadow fiend. really, only the bone fiend seems to be the only minion that works, and i assume thats because it is ranged. i mean, i can pull something and most of the pets will just sit there and do absolutely nothing. kind of like they’re cheering for me or something and don’t want to get explicitly involved.

sometimes they work, others they don’t. i can’t really tell if it’s an environment thing (something in the way of them or no pathing for the AI) or what, but it certainly is frustrating.
