Achievement daily reset time?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

goldenwing.8473

I am assuming it resets at the standard time everything else in this game resets at:

Midnight GMT 00:00:00

My husband got a chest before 5 PM (PDT) (which is the standard Midnight GMT in California) and then logged another character on after 5 PM PDT and got his 500 chest for tomorrow.

Clear as mud?

PS: there are conversion calculators online for time zones/ GMT if you’re not sure about your own time zone or the math.

Welcome to GW2.

As folks said, take the forums with a grain of salt.

Check out the game yourself. Understand that most professions are not fully flushed until level 30 (when they have all of their utility abilities.) You can still get a fairly good feel for them by level 10, which does not take long.

Experiment with different weapons… they can make the professions feel totally different.

And if you decide you want to hang around and join the rest of us addicts.. er.. players, this might be a handy part of the forum to visit:

Reason why Competition is a MUST

I’m going to agree with Raph Koster’s theory that fun is in the challenge.

Competition can add fun for some players (please see Bartle).

However, it is not a “one size fits all” solution.

Game developers understand those two “bibles” referenced above.

@ OP: Feel free to do research to expand your knowledge and understand where you fall in Bartle’s categories before trying to speak for more than yourself.

Thanks.

Vayne, this will be my last response to you because you seem to be determined to create drama where there is none. I don’t understand what appears to be the need to create misinterpretation, implication or assumptions. Feel free to have the “last word” as there is no argument here.

I, (and I believe others), have merely expressed feelings of disappointment.

As I said in my original post, I am sure ANet will hit their “mark”.

Simply put:

There are 3 ways companies approach Facebook.

1) Have a “presence” and the “likes” are initiated by customers.

2) Troll for “likes” by rewarding them or otherwise artificially increasing them.

3) Falsify what a customer is “liking” so they can sell the site, along with the site’s “likes”.

I would have hoped ANet stayed with number one.

I’m disappointed they are with number two.

That was what I was expressing. Any assumptions otherwise are mistaken.

Am I the only one a bit perturbed by the fact ANet just seem to be bribing it’s playerbase to get it more likes on Facebook?

Perturbed? I think I’d use the word “annoyed” as in: it’s annoying that ANet would want to distort Facebook’s measurements in this way. Maybe a better word would be “sad”.

Surprised? No.

They are missing “likes” from my guild since all but one of us have not and never will use Facebook.

Happy to support ANet in many ways (and have on a weekly, on-going basis). This is not one of them.

Solo Dungeons?

Posted by: goldenwing.8473

Solo dungeons did not end up being particularly popular in RIFT.

If you have more detailed information regarding ideas for a dungeon to solo (outside of stories), please post in the suggestion forum.

That is not an endorsement of the idea, just a pointer to the correct forum for the thread.

Solo dungeons in Rift, at least when I was there, had a major, major problem. That is they didn’t scale at all. And since everyone in Rift had different armor, and they had to be made for the person who just turned 50 basically, anyone who’d done a few max level dungeons could walk through them with their eyes closed.

Trion made the mistake of thinking people want easy solo dungeons…but that’s not necessarily the case. They thought people just wanted to see content but not do content and that’s not the case.

The Rift solo instances once you had any gear at all, made Guild Wars 2 look difficult.

Yes, which is why, in part, they were not popular.

But in other games, solo dungeons were more popular (AoC, Aion) for example. Rift is a bad example because they executed the dungeons badly. Guild Wars 2, due to scaling, might be able to do it better.

I have no doubt that ANet could do solo dungeons fairly well. I am huge fan of scaling in MMOs, back from 2001. Not so sure about solo dungeons (outside of personal stories). And haven’t seen a compelling argument for why ANet would want to add them (specifically in this game), nor a discussion with details from the OP, only vague handwaving regarding a general concept.

Again, better posted in the suggestions forum, along with more information, that’s all.

They did not do a good job designing it for a wide-range of the playerbase, nor scale it correctly. The concept, I might say was good (although I could argue about that); the implementation fell far short of what it could have delivered. The implementation was only useful to a very small fraction of the playerbase in a narrow time window of progression. Uh, they were interesting, sort of, to see?

Either “Kevlar” was an incredibly experienced griefer and you’ve just been “had” by a true master… or….

I can’t even finish that statement. Because “or” is inconceivable. Either he was really incapable of learning, or he was incapable of believing you could see through his claims of previous experience.

I’m so sorry you went through all that.

And thank you for sharing your heroic attempt at helping someone through a set of fractals they obviously had not been through before. (Assuming it was not, indeed a troll.)

I’m guessing there are many here who understand your pain.

“Kevlar” as a verb? In WoW, it was Leroy Jenkins. Except in that case, it was staged.

That POI was added in the Sky Pirates patch however it’s part of the new jumping puzzle which won’t be available til later.

Don’t worry, it doesn’t count towards your map completion.

Unfortunately it does count towards map completion. My new alt has all but that POI done for zone complete. Reported it as a bug yesterday and flagged it progress obstructed.

If it’s an event jump puzzle which is temporary content, it has no business blocking zone complete.

If it’s a permanent addition, it has no business being a requirement until the content is actually available.

I assume that’s just a sloppy mistake. Don’t mind waiting…. posting in the hopes that something like this does not slip past again.

It’s “difficult” in the sense of old arcade games – if you make a mistake you have to start all over. It wouldn’t be bad if the fights weren’t taking so long, but having to do the same repetitive combat phase several times without screwing up?

Not my cup of tea.

Arcade game, indeed.

We did not enjoy the frogger-style need-to-jump-on-top-of-the-crates arcade feel.

I get that ANet seems to be experimenting with different game styles. The arcade jumping and jumping puzzles are feeling stale. Looking forward to seeing some different creative implementations in the future. Hopefully.

Personal opinion and guild opinion.

To all those that were happy with this month’s temporary content: fantastic. Glad you found some fun.

Medium gear looks... unappealing?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Every armour class complains about their limitations.

  • If you’re medium, you’re gonna have to wear a longcoat almost without exception.
  • If you’re light, you’re going to have a skirt or robe.
  • If you’re heavy you can forget wearing anything soft, it’s all metal clasps, plates and spikes.

As a light armour user I often look longingly at the straps and buckles all the medium armours get, and wish I could have an outfit that didn’t have a skirt

My cloth casters would love to have pants… and not the lone set of harem pants.

On the other hand, the guys have to wear robes as well, so I shouldn’t complain too much.

How many MMORPG’s have male casters in pants at end game?

try telling that to human females :P

huh? telling what?

was a reply to the topic…

I thought most ppl who played Human females hated the medium armor in the game?

This female doesn’t. I have different sets on my female Human, Asura, Norn and Sylvari.

Totally subjective, I agree.

Love the pirate looks on the Sylvari. So does my college-age daughter.
The pirate hat on Asura is awesome. (even on the male model)
The CM long coat and the Prowler coat both look good on all 4 of those races.
The Norn T3 cultural boots look great mixed in with the Prowler coat/gloves and with the CM coat.

The coats that are given as rewards for some of the personal story lines (Claw island part for example) are also nice.

I don’t particularly like the padded coat, but done in white with the Human cultural pants in black.. my “chef” looks quite nice.

The only complaint I really have is that I wish (A) the pirates boots for the Asura did not protrude naked toes and (B) there was more than just one closed-toed boot model for the Asura (T3-which costs 12g).

=====

I know there were threads a few months around release that complained about the constant “matrix” coat models.

And I’m guessing this will probably continue to be an on-going issue.

More “dress” and “jacket” options rather than “coat” may solve the problem. Also leather vests with shirts perhaps. A short leather biker jacket, for example, would look really good. Especially with the Norn default engineer hair.

WTB New Premium Hair Colors

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: goldenwing.8473

goldenwing.8473

I’d welcome new colors as well.

Greens that have more of a blue/yellow balance, perhaps more of a yellow base rather than an aqua tint. (Although I do enjoy that color, it works well with both the teals/spruces in the game as well as dark blue dyes). There does seem to be a gap missing in those greens that blend better with the yellow end of the spectrum (outside of the Sylvari colors.)

And several new shades of pink – not pale almost non-existent, or neon purple but more along the lines of cotton candy, strawberry and raspberry. A range of medium to dark pink hair.

And I agree with the red norn hair comment. I remember providing feedback on that during beta.

PS: I’d also love to see more of the hairs styles shared across the different races. If it’s possible to do that without breaking race immersion. (e.g. perhaps some of the Human hair styles avail for Norn and Asura and a little vice versa.) I’d love to see an Asura with a high style ponytail.

And I suspect this thread needs to be in the suggestion forum.

There will always be immature players who like to use whatever they can to “grief” other players… including non-stop spamming dance invites, loud sounds, and whatever new goodies ANet introduces in the future (that are fun AND can be “abused”).

As has been suggested before:

please fix /block playername to include blocking any instruments said player is using

This goes for the new horn and the Winterday’s bell. There has been and still is a player on my server that stands in LA at the bank and leans on one note on the bell… high pitched and annoying, like a stuck doorbell or worse. He’s been reported several times over the past months, suspended once and yet STILL continues (today) to “grief”.

Eliteist Gameplay

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: goldenwing.8473

goldenwing.8473

There have been numerous threads about this in the last couple of months/weeks. It has been an annoying issue created by a narrow subset of players within GW2 that have imported a different playstyle which is not the norm.

(Please note: “elitism” does not mean “elite”. There is a wide chasm between “skill” and mature behavior regarding same, which many “elitist” players do not comprehend.)

“Elitist” players are a very very small minority of players, who have imported a learned behavior from previous MMOs. That behavior is at odds with GW’s community-oriented gameplay.

“Elitist” players are not the norm for GW2 as a whole. Contrary to other MMOs, these players in GW2 exist only in a tiny sub-culture. They only impact the game if other (regular) players accept or tolerate their behavior beyond the immediate “elitist” cliques. The LFG site seems to be the place they gather, and hence are usually easily identified. And avoided.

Their behavior looks more pervasive than it actually is if you happen to be someone trying to get into the dungeon they prefer. It’s annoying, and can be avoided for the most part. Granted, there are some guilds and some groups out there that are made up of griefers. That, unfortunately is standard in any MMO, and any egregious violation of ToS allowed behavior should be reported to ANet via an email to support.

Best way to avoid these atypical players is by (1) creating your own groups, (2) only playing with like-minded players from either the LFG web site or your friend’s list who affirm GW2’s standard culture, and/or (3) only play with guildmates.

Sorry if there has been a struggle getting into or finding groups if that is the case.

Hope you have better luck with the majority of the player base.

Would you like to have capes?

The last game that had “capes” that I liked were the cloaks in DAoC (pre Catacombs expansion). The collared “elvis” cloaks looked fantastic and sporting the guild emblem was a must!

Having said that…

No, I actually do not want cloaks in GW2.

The backpacks serve the purpose just as well, and can provide a larger selection of creativity, new looks, (and gem store purchases). Holiday events, living stories can also continue to keep “shinies” (e.g. backpacks) in the game that players will pursue.

See: toy bag versus flower versus mass of writhing squiggly for examples of possibilities, never mind the Quaggans/Charr varieties. (Get creative folks, I’m betting there are endless ideas floating out there… boats, tables, large ale mugs, etcetera.)

And let’s not forget good old Charr-tail-clipping when it comes to cloaks. Unless the cloaks are made short enough to not reach the tail, in which case the Charr might end up looking like someone has thrown a saddle blanket on their back in preparation for using them as a mount. <cough>

Why do people stop playing GW2?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: goldenwing.8473

goldenwing.8473

Most players walk into a game with expectations.

Some of those are based on the marketing hype, others come from past experiences with other games.

Either the expectations are met or not.

Some players may not have the experience to view the hype with an objective perspective. Some players may have previous experience with only one particular game and therefore base all other games in comparison.

Some players have “comfort zones” and want new games to continue to provide similar content to what has been familiar. Other players may be open to new experiences and weigh the new game based on what it actually provides.

Some players have concerns over whether the developers appear to be listening, responding, are transparent, appear trustworthy etcetera. Other players may care only about gameplay mechanics.

Obligatory list of reasons regarding “casual” vs “hardcore” content, boredom, too easy, too hard, etcetera

All of this is on a sliding scale for each individual player and what they are willing to accept or tolerate in a game they play.

And a sliding scale of whether their expectations (realistic or not) have been met.

Silly reasons you won't play a race or class?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: goldenwing.8473

goldenwing.8473

Warning: incoming complaining

Love short races, but the camera height centered on the feet of my Asura have made them an absolute no-go in dungeons and fractals.

Minor detail.

The real reason I won’t play most of the races is that they come “pre-loaded” with pre-set personalities through the voice acting.

THAT is the thing that irritates me about this game (I figured it out a week or two ago Vayne. )

As a female playing female toons, I have some minor problems with looks; mostly, it’s the prebuilt personalities.

The Humans are polite and fairly bland, and the females run like linebackers – head down, butt out and incredibly clunky. All on toothpick legs.

The Charr (true to form), just are often bellicose (belligerent/if not downright rude). I love how they look (although I do have a problem with their running).

The Asura just NEVER SHUT UP. At first the comments were rather comical. After several at 80, I’m just annoyed. (And ANet still needs to put in a set of medium armor CLOSE-toed boots other than the only set that costs 12g.)

The Sylvari sound like very polite, little airhead school girls. Love their curiosity; the simpering “airheadedness” I can do without. And the goofy, girly run…. I’ve learned to keep my weapons out so they walk like normal human females.

Which leaves me:

Norn. Even though their torsos are stretched/deformed compared to the humans, Norn are incredibly graceful in their movements. I can tolerate their low key dry humor although at times I also find them rude. And they look like real women with meat on their bones… toned, healthy and solid.

My personality is multi-facted/complex, like most people. I find the characters in GW2, as evidenced by the voice acting, fairly simplistic/one-dimensional. Not unexpected I guess. It is an MMO.

The bottom line is: I am having a hard time identifying with my characters because of the pre-loaded personalities via sound.

I suppose I could turn the sound off. Or at least the character sound off. I’ve played multiple MMO’s with the sound off. Finally found a game where I enjoy the sound, and my characters do not feel like mine. I do not feel like I am playing characters that I created. I feel like I stepped into a premade character that I use. No feeling of “ownership”. It’s a nit. I’m complaining. I acknowledge that.

/complaining off

Despite all of the above, I do enjoy the game, and Norn characters as my mains. I’ve also learned that in small doses, the Asura/Sylvari/Human can also be enjoyable. Charrs, no matter how awesomely punk I make them look are just never gonna agree with me.

Focus on the gem-store bad for the game?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I bought 3 CEs. Two for me, one for my daughter.

I didn’t buy them to “support the game”. I bought them because of the items they offered which I am still using today in game when I roll alts.

I have 43 characters slots. That’s 33 extra. You can do the math.

I have also bought gems for a variety of things since release, on a monthly, on-going basis. I won’t go into how much I have spent, this game is my only hobby at the moment.

Again, I didn’t do that to “support the game” I bought the character slots and the gems to get things I wanted to use.

“Supporting the game” is something I do in game, on various forums, reporting bugs, making suggestions, reporting bots, reporting ToS violations, promoting the game to others with a clear, non-fanboi, objective perspective.

I do that as well for my own benefit.

If ANet and the community gets something from that, awesome. That makes me happy.

I don’t expect anything for playing the game the way I like.

And I certainly would not demand it.

Buy all available character slots (which would most likely end up empty considering I just have 2 80’s, one alt I’m slowly leveling and one bank mule char), max bank and character inventory and… and… and… well, I guess I’d save the rest for a rainy day since there’s really nothing else in the TP I’m currently interested in.

There is a guess currently that you can get up to at least 30 slots, wonder what the real max number is :P

I currently have 36 characters on my first account, 7 on my second. Could be where that 43 number came from.

I believe someone posted that a friend of theirs had 37?

OP, you are either extremely unlucky or you kitten ed them off somehow. I crafted my mesmer almost to 80 then watched 1 short video showing the run. I wasn’t experienced at all but I did just fine and haven’t had a problem before. Just don’t slow down the run.

I was doing fine. I curtained in the appropriate spots, I waved at the first boss, and I stayed at the desp spot and greatsworded acolytes from a far. They screwed up repeatedly and pinned it on me.

Sorry you met some unpleasant people, but generalizations and stereotyping about an entire subset of players won’t make you feel better and only serves to inflame the community through prejudice and stereotyping.

(And, no, I have never done a speed run through CoF1.)

Nah, I am not stereotyping that every single person who speeds CoF is like this. I’m just saying it seems like a lot of players act like CoF is going to kill their parents. I have been in some pleasant parties that were very nice and respected my efforts.

I’ve had some pretty fast, pretty smooth runs with some…but it’s the ones that are negative that just make you sour.

I’m curious, were the other players in the group all from the same guild?

Sabelle, I am sorry you had such an unfriendly experience in GW2. Don’t blame you for feeling sour.

Please understand that the number of people who act like elitists in this game is a very very small minority, who as you aptly deduced, mostly hang out in CoF1 doing speed runs.

1) Let’s try and keep it that way. I don’t subscribe to that behavior or the values that encourage it, have hated it in other games, especially those games where the devs have deliberately fostered that kind of behavior. Thankfully, ANet does not.

2) If you are interested in doing CoF1, and you happen to get into a group to do so, save yourself some hassle and ask if it’s a speed run and gauge reponses. If it is, and you are uncomfortable with responses, consider leaving on the spot. Or start a group yourself. I know that sounds callous. See #1.

3) Play with folks you know, whether friends list, or guild.

4) Report any egregious griefing to ANet via an email to support. They do care. (Details and screenshots help).

5) Help keep GW2 centered on continuing to have a community full of friendly, helpful, mature players by continuing to be one yourself. Just like in “real” community, there is no need to tolerate immature behavior, inappropriate teenage locker room antics/chat in public /mapchat, and elitist style griefing.

6) And remember, not all players who run CoF1 doing speed runs, or Fractals are elitist.

-Elite but not elitist.

Removing Yourself from the Leaderboards

I have looked at the leaderboards only once… the day they were published because I was curious to see how they had done the web site. I had left one post about that time saying I believe that inclusion on the leaderboard ought to be optional.

Since then, other than an occasional post by someone, I have totally forgotten they exist. Vayne, your thread is the first time in months I have actually remembered they are there.

So, no, their existence does not affect me at all, my play or my enjoyment (or not) of the game.

I don’t play to achievements. I don’t play for achievements. Or numbers or rankings. I have no need. I play for myself and I play for my guild. Nothing matters more than that.

For those that enjoy them, in whatever way works for you: fantastic. Happy gaming!

Why there should be a dps meter

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: goldenwing.8473

goldenwing.8473

Place a measurement goal in front of people, tell them their “success” or perception thereof depends on them reaching the measurement …. and you will get predictable results.

e.g. be careful what you measure.

TL:DR at bottom of post
=====

Analysts for a large gaming conglomerate that owns a developer that created a popular MMO determines that the company is losing an unexpected amount of money dealing with service requests from customers with issues regarding blocked playtime. These requests are taking a lot of time to resolve, tying up employees and detracting from overall revenue producing productivity within the development company.

At this point in the time, the developer has a customer satisfaction problem, not only with the quality of the product; they also have very long service request queues, often requiring weeks to address. This in turn has compounded the total customer experience which then created a negative perception of the game and developer which in turn led to attrition.

The nominal expectation at this point is that the developer will care about their customers’ experience, be concerned about loss of subscription, and spend the appropriate resources to correct the lack of quality leading to customer service requests.

Instead, the analysts focus on setting up a measurement designed to move more customer service requests through the queue in a timely manner, thereby reducing the resources required to handle them.

Given the measurement goal of closing ‘x’ number of customer requests per hour, the employees did exactly that. They reduced the customer service queue and were able to reduce the number of employees required to handle them, thereby saving the company money. Measurement attained.

They did so, however, at the expense of their customers. Instead of solving the customer’s problems, requests were simply marked closed with no investigation and no interaction. Customers were informed their requests were closed, and being closed, had no recourse for re-opening the issue, since it had already been resolved. Attrition escalated, costing the company more money in the end.

There are countless examples like this, including the Ford Company fiasco with customer warranties from over 40 years ago.

=====

TL:DR version: Be careful what you measure.

It would be nice to have an easy to use personal contribution meter that measures what my professions bring. I understand that DPS is only a small portion of that. And I refuse to play to a subcomponent meter knowing it will negatively impact my overall performance.

If I was elitist and running a specific group based on ….

….. not going there.

The answer is: the only reason I would exclude someone from a group is if they do NOT meet the following 3 criteria:

1) friendly
2) mature
3) helpful (which includes open to learning if needed)

I will take an “honorable” newbie, who is trying to learn the game, learn the dungeon, playing a “broken” class and is still working on gear over someone who cannot display any of the above qualities.

Our guild came to this game to get back to a community that still believed in that old-school value.

Quality gear is easy to obtain. Any fool can do that.

Quality people… priceless.

Why no /inspect ?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: goldenwing.8473

goldenwing.8473

For those trying to shame/ belittle those advocating a healthy boundary normally found in society (the right to share or not share information), your curiosity, your need for your convenience, your demand for having things your way for your benefit (e.g. your erroneous sense of entitlement) stops at the door of my right to choose whether or not to share (privacy).

You have the right to play the game the way you choose within the bounds of the EULA. If you demand that I share information before joining a group, then I have the right to not do so and face the consequences of not doing so.

Oh and btw, I am elite. I am a min/maxer. I am not an elitist. I am also a person who values privacy and the right to set that healthy boundary.

Privacy has nothing to do with quality of gear/specs, playstyle, perceived or otherwise.

It’s a core value. If you are interested in my gear/specs, you can certainly ask. I have the right to choose whether or not to respond. And I may choose not to respond for a variety of reasons. I may choose to be friendly and helpful. I get to make that choice. Just because you demand an answer does not guarantee you will receive one. That implies that, somehow, you have the right to that information. You do not.

As to /inspect itself. Again, I repeat myself:

/Inspect enables if not creates an environment that damages, degrades, and destroys community, as well as arguably both build and gameplay diversity.

My argument is that /inspect has no place in GW2 because the concept of inspect itself is fundamentally flawed.

In reality, the only real purposes that are served by /inspect are abusive and divisive. And an invasion of privacy.

Why no /inspect ?

People will exhibit less than socially desirable behavior (e.g. be “jerks”) whether or not there is a game mechanic or a tool in game that demonstrates their natural inclination.

Nothing in game will “make” them that way. It may help foster that undesirable behavior. There are “tools” outside the game that allow that now (see the GW2 looking for group site.)

The point isn’t that the /inspect will foster elitism.

The point is that no matter what behavior may or may not occur as a result of an /inspect, my gear, my build, my playstyle is NOT anyone’s business, unless I am doing something that is not within the bounds of the EULA.

bewhatever covered this quite nicely in his post.

Ah yes I agree jerks will always be present. However, as I’ve said, the /inspect WILL foster the jerkiness attitude because you are rewarding players for being jerks. Now I’m not saying jerks shouldn’t be allowed to play, but when they get to antagonize other players, it’ll pose a real problem. /inspect might not make them that way, but it’ll certainly help drive people into that orientation. GW2lfg, despite being an incredibly valuable service, has already done that. The point is that there are tools in a game (not necessarily gw2) that can help foster a particular attitude. League of legends is already trying to curb the toxic attitude of their players by using the honor system, where you click on a button that says that you think this player is a good team mate, friendly or helpful, as well as thinking your opponent is an honorable opponent. And I think this is merely the biggest concern people have over the /inspect feature. Granted elite people would want to know their party’s build to maximize effectiveness. But should that come at the cost of degrading other people? I don’t think so.

I believe we are in violent agreement.

/Inspect enables if not creates an environment that damages, degrades, and destroys community, as well as arguably both build and gameplay diversity

I agree: /inspect can be used in an abusive way. And that’s never ok.

My argument is that /inspect has no place in GW2 because the concept of inspect itself is fundamentally flawed.

In reality, the only real purposes that are served by /inspect are abusive and divisive. And an invasion of privacy.

Most importantly, I as a player do not believe that anyone else has any right to private information about my choices in regards to spec, gear, or anything else.

@OP: there have been several threads over the last months asking this same question. Searching the forums, you will find similar responses to those expressed here.

I am an elite.

I am not an elitist.

And I agree with this post 100%.

PS: whether or not an /inspect would lead to elitism is beside the point. Reread the quote.

an elite player is a player who is really good at the game.
an elitist is someone who looks down on other people for being “bad” at the game, worse than they are. One deal with gameplay, the other is attitude. You can be good at the game without being a jerk, or you could be a jerk without being good at the game. Or you could be good at the game AND be a jerk, or be bad at the game AND be a jerk. The whole point here is trying to avoid making people into jerks.

People will exhibit less than socially desirable behavior (e.g. be “jerks”) whether or not there is a game mechanic or a tool in game that demonstrates their natural inclination.

The Guild Wars 2 Mindset

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: goldenwing.8473

goldenwing.8473

Sorry Vayne I have to disagree. And agree. And the two are not in conflict.

I enjoy min/maxing my characters, I enjoy goals, I enjoy challenges (try doing fractals with only 4), I enjoy the scenery, I enjoy rolling alts, I enjoy being “casual” during the week, solo wandering and exploring, I enjoy being “hardcore” during the weekends with my guild on my designated “main” and enjoy both PvE and WvW. Heck, I even enjoy farming. I sit in both of the cultures you describe.

Having said all that, I don’t ever think of myself as a GW player. And I don’t think I ever will. There’s just something about this game that irritates me in a way that no other MMO has, outside of GW1. (I will let you know as soon I figure out what exactly it is. ) Btw, I hated GW1. There’s a lot about GW2 I don’t like, starting with some of the values the devs have demonstrated via content/direction since release. That’s a whole other thread and I think most of us have thrashed that one to bits.

I appreciate the artwork and the time and energy that has gone into the game. And the fact that the environment is more community-oriented and less competitive than most other MMOs (DAoC exception).

I like a lot of the GW2 game mechanics and don’t think I could ever go back to any of the 7 or 8 other MMOs I have played over the years. The devs are onto something there.

However, like most MMO’s that I play, I found myself bored 3 months after release and in the space of exploring the game to see if I could get past that feeling by finding new experiences. I’m here because my guild is here. So I’m trying to make the best out the game they enjoy.

No MMO will ever have all that I want. That’s just a given.

I can’t even say GW2 comes close or is “as good as could get”. Because it doesn’t feel that way… to me.

To other players, if that works for you, fantastic! Happy Gaming.

I will continue, as I have before, to try and keep a balanced approach (there’s that concept!) with the understanding that every MMO has trade-offs, and it’s a matter of what can be accepted/tolerated. And I’m sure, at some point I will walk away. In the meantime, I’m going to enjoy what I can.

Approach indeed.

Discouraged to play multiple characters?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: goldenwing.8473

goldenwing.8473

Chiming in with the others: alts are not an interchangeable skin to use over the first character you level up. There’s absolutely nothing in this game that discourages using alternate characters.

If you find that getting top-stat equipment on your alternate characters is too tedious then simply don’t do it. Top-stat equipment in every MMORPG I’ve ever played has never been handed to a player simply because one of their characters already obtained it.

People who play multiple characters carry no larger a burden than those that don’t, they simply choose to carry it multiple times.

It’s honestly a shame that the reply with the big green A isn’t tolunart.2095’s post. Any perceived “discouraging” is coming from your own mindset that your second (or third, or fourth) character shouldn’t need to work as hard as your first to get the same things.

42 alts here.. ten of them level 80, working on number 11. Leveling two of those 80’s through fractals at the moment. Have laurel gear on 3, all 80’s have exotics.

I agree with everything you’ve posted, and want to add a note to your last statement:

It is actually easier in many ways to get 2nd, 3rd, 4th characters leveled and geared (dungeons and otherwise) because the learning curve (the actual “hard” part) has already occurred. At that point, refinement of the process starts to kick in and some parts of the process become faster, more straightforward.

Going through Explorables and Fractals, the strategies /layout of the dungeons and the fights are already known. There is a smaller learning curve with specific approach/tactics based on the different profession being wielded in the moment. That can be fun. Same with WvW. The basic process remains constant, the tweak, is again in tactics for the specific profession.

Yes, a sense of “grind” can occur in the actual physical hours spent “re”-leveling. It’s a different profession, a different character. It’s appropriate because the gameplay is different. Yes, the dailies, the limits on laurels for example, are restrictive. However, doing multiple dailies a day for each and every alt would also be incredibly restrictive in terms of hours required for that specific goal, negatively impacting time for other gameplay.

This is no different than any other MMO, even those that require re-gearing to do raids when a different class is played.

I don’t see anything in GW2 that discourages alts. The shared fractal relics, shared dungeon tokens, badges, etcetera actually makes it easier in many ways. As a whole, the game is less prohibitive because it does not demand gear-centric playing overall.

- Min/maxing alt lover

PS: I have had 4 accounts worth of alts (e.g. at least 40 alts with 10-11 at endgame min/maxed for ultimate usage) in almost every MMO I have played over the last 13+ years (including DAoC and WoW .. and a couple of WoW’s clones.)

Players age, and Guilds

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

goldenwing.8473

There are a few “old timers” guilds that I know that move from game to game. Minimum age requirement to join was 40. Least it was when I was invited to join a decade ago. I politely declined (given I was already in an incredible guild and still am.)

Birthday #56 coming in a few months. And I’m happy to report I’m young compared to many folks I’ve played with, including an 80 year old gentleman who is still keeping up with his grandkids online, and a lot of folks in their mid to late 60s.

One of the things that I have held as true for decades is that maturity and chronological age have nothing to do with each other. Some of the best folks I’ve enjoyed playing with were in their teens and 20s. And some of the worst offenders in some of the worst community games were mid-30s to mid-40s (e.g. so called “adults”.)

Informal surveys about 7 years ago put the median age range of a MMO player at about 35. I’m sure a lot depends on the particular MMO being surveyed.

@Tazmin, if you’re really interested in finding a good guild within a particular age range, you can always head over to the guilds forum and try your luck there:

Prestige in Guild Wars 2

in Suggestions

Posted by: goldenwing.8473

goldenwing.8473

agreed… suggestion forum?

Prestige:
1. The level of respect at which one is regarded by others; standing.
2. A person’s high standing among others; honor or esteem.
3. Widely recognized prominence, distinction, or importance: a position of prestige in diplomatic circles.”

…snip…

Now this wasn’t a suggestion post, what I really want to know is whether players feel like legendarys, titles, and other things Arenanet views as prestigious because of rarity- are still prestigious in players eyes. Do you think legendarys serve their purpose? Do you think something like “Golden” title is an accomplishment? Things like those that were implemented to show off to others, I’m interested in seeing if people now playing still find them valuable as prestigious items/titles. Or if their actual prestige factor has gone because they are obtained too much by luck or money alone. And feel free to comment on the 5 types I listed, and add any I missed.

tldr; Discuss what you believe is a prestigious aspect/item/title in game, and what you no longer feel is an accomplishment other than to be able to buy. Also, how you feel about prestigious items given out solely by luck.

I don’t feel that any thing in an MMO confers prestige. Period.

There are choices that players make, that they feel gives them prestige. There are items / titles /rankings that developers believe somehow will create/foster/enhance competition and in doing so set artificial “standards” or “values” and therefore keep players in game, striving to obtain.

I don’t buy into any of that personally. Neither does my guild.

If players want those things, and it works for them, by all means, enjoy. It’s a game.

Just don’t expect if you are waving an annoying special effect weapon around in my face, interfering with my vision, that I’m going to be impressed. I find that rather rude, actually.

I respect players based on how they act… in game playing and in chat. It’s the old-fashioned “player behind the screen” value. I respect players that are courteous, mature, friendly, helpful, community-oriented. I respect players that contribute to the community, not detract.

So, no, there is nothing in game that I believe actually confers prestige. Not titles, weapons, gear, looks, gold in the bank.

Just like in real life.

Agree, Siphaed. “Long term investment” indeed. “Delayed gratification” is a phrase that got lost in today’s insta-everything world. Both in concept and use.

I have nine 80’s. Three of them have Laurel Amulets.

The exotics I have on my characters are good enough to allow my guild to 4-man both Fractals and Explorables. The amulets are gravy and a nice addition, but not absolutely required. Gear does not play my characters, I do.

I prefer that what is currently account bound remain account bound. For obvious reasons, many of them explained in this thread.

I am in no rush. There is no game to “beat”. I don’t need it yesterday. I like having something to work towards.

I don’t feel kittened by the Laurel limit. I feel relieved. The thought of doing dailies, systematically, on 9 different characters sounds more annoying than fun; more like another set of demands/chores than relaxing. (Oh, and btw, I have a second account. Haven’t bothered doing dailies there.)
