When a lvl 80 player with lvl 80 exotic/ascended gear is weaker than a lvl 20 player in a low level zone, there is a problem.

That is not possible even mathematically. the level 80 has all skills and traits, plus an elite skill. Further they have more knowledge of enemies and how they fight. This is a huge strawman.

New trait system Good or bad?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I personally love it. Reasons provided are:

1. While sheer multitude of players choices have gone down, available viable builds have gone up. Availability of builds over sheer quantity always wins me over. So far while there have been some powerful builds in PvP, choices are still there, and they synergize much more effectively.

2. Better balance of specialization layouts. I have never been a fan of the speed boost traits, simply because they varied so wildly between classes. Rangers got speed boost with a skill, Warriors only if a melee weapon is equipped, Guardians, never, engineers if they slotted 4 traits in a very specialized line. The rebuilt traits, and the combination of abilities given make the speed boosts a bit more equal across the board. The speed boosts are simply an example though. Giving cool down reduction for focusing on a type skill makes far more sense than simply putting 2 trait points into a tree and leaving it as it is.

3. Ease of use is also great for me, plus for new players, there is a satisfaction of unlocking traits via the wheel. This gives a much better graphical representation and appreciation of unlocking them as you adventure.

I much prefer the current specialization system over the older, and I have been playing GW since the release of Prophecies.

I like where downscaling is. It is supposed to bring you on par with an individual of the areas level, and it does. The problem was that Exotic gear on downscales, had no comparison to any other gear at that level. This has been addressed, and now challanges are just that. Downscales STILL have a decided advantage as they have all specs and skills unlocked, plus additional player experience and weapon options. This is how it should be in my opinion. Crit chances do go down, because, as was mentioned, it should. Low levels do not have access to the sheer numerical advantage Precision and Ferocity have, as such, if downscaling, why would you? This is the point of downscaling and I feel it is in a good place now.

Guild Halls for small guilds

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: gricks.1897

gricks.1897

I know I will be in the minority here, but…

I am a Guild Leader of a small guild, about 10-13 people, maybe half of them active regularly. We are all friends or know each in real life. We are definitely a small guild on my spectrum of guilds. I personally do not see a point in guilds smaller than about 5 (to go with the Destinies Edge format). I am a long time MMO player and see the use of my Friends List in that role. Family, friends, spouses, they belong in a friends list, sure you can make a guild, but do not expect to be able to do the type of things large active guilds can do.

This is simply how guilds in every game have worked. If you put the time into growing a large active guild, with many members, and work to manage that guild, you will reap the benefits. Just because you are a guild does not entitle you to the same privileges as the largest guilds get. A guild is like a company. Large companies can simply do more than small companies. I and my guild have accepted that as a fair balance of power between guilds.

HoT does introduce the capability for small guilds do a lot of the same things as larger guilds via the new Guild Company (I forget the name), that will provide many of the services a guild hall will and will be a central hub for small guilds. This is a fair compensation for allowing small guilds to have many of the same activities and opportunities via a socialized format.

If you as a small guild really do want a guild hall, they make it possible to simply travel there with other people who would be glad to help out. This as well is extremely fair. A guild hall is a challenge, it is being taken from Mordremoth, it is being cleaned of the enemies touch. This should not in my opinion be a simple thing. A guild hall should be earned. In GW1 this was done very simply by everyone pooling resources, in GW2 it is far more story driven.

Definition of “real” guild or not. “Small” vs. “Large”. Your guild will have things it cant do due to size, large guilds will have things it can do because of its size. Guilds should not be equal, guilds should have opportunities gained by them for work and effort put in. Guidl Halls is one of those. Small guilds can use the social guild hall provided in lions arch. My guild probably will, and while we wish we could get a guild hall, we realize we are not a large guild. We are happy allying with others though, to help them get their guild halls, and vica versa. Teamwork breeds opportunity socially. The more friends int his game the better.

PS: Small guilds ARE over sized parties.

Turret nerf thoughts and criticism.

gricks.1897

Alright ANET, I will say I understand completely the need to NERF turrets for PVP, I play PVP,WvWvW/PvE all fairly equally. I enjoy Turret Engi’s, usually main my Mesmer or Warrior for PvP as I like to wander. They were a nuisance to play against, but I usually just left them to their own devices (literally).

The problem is, Turrets do no work anywhere any more. Fully specced into Turrets survivability and they melt in seconds in PvE, they can be positioned well enough in PvP but still not enough survivability and damage output/attack speed to warrant their cool down, and in WvW a single necromancer destroys most turrets in seconds when defending a point.

Turrets taking criticals are great, that’s a good change, it makes sense. But they do not have the sustainability to survive any sort of condition. I know folks want to try and have their builds be effective against all, but that’s simply unreasonable. There will always be counters, that’s the point to creating and testing builds. Turrets countered condition (or should have), high aoe damage/aoe criticals counter turrets (or should have), close range burst counters aoe, etc.

Have anyone else tried using Turret builds since patch? How are their experiences? Am I looking at this the wrong way?

While I was hoping for Paragon, I did not expect it to come about. My thoughts on this are fairly simple in that this class specialization is very confused.

It has great ranged combat options with its bow skills, and I love the ability to shoot a wall. But that its given a great distance closer ability. So engage at range, soften up, jump in, put wall up to prevent their range support. Good and simple switch hitter class.

Lets give them traps for their skills.

Wait what? What was that last part? Why traps if they are a mobile switch hitter class set up?

Traps work well on Rangers because Rangers know, people will want to come for them. Traps boom, great sword, number 2, number 5, people have a bad day.

Traps for Guardian, their damage output at range does not look like it will be huge, so not really luring people into traps. So then they switch to sword/focus, or greatsword and leap in…traps are now left behind.

I always leave Guardians for last anyways in PvP/WvW cause I am not worried about their damage output. I am worried about wasting time on them and getting back stabbed by the thief. Now I know the Guard will be sitting in the back on traps, I can ignore them even more.

Current Status of Pugging Dungeons?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

gricks.1897

I did this recently to try a “fast level guide” using dungeons.

Take aways:

1. There a lot of “80’s zerker only!” in the LFG tool, and its incredibly obnoxious.
2. If you start your own LFG “Any Path/Story, Any level” majority of time you will get a competent group.
3. If you know how to play your character, and your armor/weapons are up to date, you can do better than 50% of the down levels.
4. Don’t be afraid to say “Hey, we are new to this dungeon/path” and more often than not, the leader/some one else will explain how each section works.

Good luck! I ran Ascalonian Catacombs to about 64, crafted my way to 80, bought a whole bunch of Exotic Weapons and Armors using the Tokens.

Guardians right now already do not use a lot of weapons (scepter, focus, staff, sword, shield). those weapons seem fairly core to almost all Guardians and I doubt it will change with the new XPAC. Gaurdians are very balanced right now and I love the current place they are in. They can lean in almost any direction they want fairly reliably.

You don’t play guardian do you? Shield… useless.

Sword
Focus
Scepter
Great Sword
Staff
Hammer

….Longbow shortly!

I do and love my Gaurdian, I enjoy the shield a great deal especially in PVP when I am running procs off of Aegis. Virtue everyone gets aegis, it blows, more damage, shield, dodge back, shield 4, give all aegis, Greatsword leap in, aoe, Meditation, renew virtues, pop aegis virtue again. Love me some exploding Aegis.

I hope to all that is good and holy that we get Longbow.

This game kills graphics cards?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

To my knowledge, GW2 also pulls power from the CPU (not GPU) for much of its graphics processing, this was one of the things I found interesting about the game.

This game should have absolutely 0 reasons why the Graphics card would be burning out.All games pull from the GPU in some capacity, and its all an even amount depending on the games settings. As others have said:
1. Power Supply
2. Air Flow
3. Dust
4. Overclocking (seriously this is the biggest, stupidest thing someone can do to their computer, minuscule gain over massive loss in sustainability)

I like this guy. Hes posting an article that is just rattling around in my head through this entire discussion. I always thought it was some strategic issue about open world siege…now I am finding out its simply a bunch of “Rules of Honor” players seem to be putting on themselves.

While I can see a moral benefit of this since this is just a game, it also hampers actual strategic plays since GOOD strategies in real life have always been underhanded.

Why the hate for open field siege?

gricks.1897

So this discussion leads to another, I read a lot about Trebs not being used against gates, for which I agree completely. I have only been in the wvw seen for about a month. The scenario was as follows:

1. Blob of about 40-50 in SW Keep EB just…sitting on their gate. Only about 20 of us outside. We do not ahve the numbers to push the gate, to plant rams. Every time we do, it rains bags, but theres just to many to sustain the killing so we fall back. Happens for about 10-15 minutes.
2. I want the keep. No particular reason why…I just am tired of DB’s camping.
3. Plop trebs back up the hill. Knock down gate, DB retreats.

After that we did the normal Catapulting wall from the side.

Any commanders able to provide a better strategy for future use of the scenario?

in WvW

gricks.1897

So this question has been rattling in my head. Why is there hatred for Open World siege such as ballista and arrow carts aimed at blobs? It was my understanding that this was one of their purposes. From Maguuma, I see blobs rolling around the gate of a keep out of supplies, complaining about nothing to fight (cause Dragonbrand has no idea how to commit), I put a couple superior trebs down and start hitting the gate from range. Then the yelling happens.

I sorta thought that’s the point of siege….to siege.

Could anyone clarify the mentality here or is it purely because folks just want to stomp face in hand to hand? This is the most confusing thing I have seen.

Do Something About Turret Engis.

I play my turret engi if I do not want to have to pay too much attention to the game. The biggest issue I see with Turret engi’s is that their turrets have some stupidly long range and health. I have seen warriors and thieves wail away at my thumper turrets for ages.

My bunker turret engi can sit amongst his turrets for ages against three other people. If I set up my turrets well (rifle and rocket overlooking the point but no where near it) then I have a LOT of reliable damage coming down.

I fold to actually coordinated teams though. If my turrets get destroyed I have a good 30-40 seconds of only having my numbers 1-5.

But keep in mind, this is what bunkers do. I get very few kills but I deny point capture.

That’s exactly what I mean, a bunker shouldn’t be able to bunk vs 3 enemies at all, it’s just way too imbalanced.

Thats exactly the point of a bunker…to sit impervious on a point and wait for his team to come and wipe the enemy. Thats exactly the definition of the role. Like I said, I do nto get many kills, I can dish out enough damage to push the enemy away but nothing to finalize any kills. Turret engis are bunkers. They sit and defend.

The Sylvari were a driving force in the destruction of Zhaitan. Was it really for the good of Tyria or for the good of Mordremoth to usurp Zhaitan? Many of the Sylvari have always been of a single driven mind to kill Zhaitan. NONE have had the Wyld hunt to kill Mordremoth.

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

gricks.1897

A lot of us have talked about this for years. It’s frustrating. You can completely shut down a player in PvP, but shutting down a boss is frowned upon. It would be nice to see boss fights where the bosses had no defiance and the *point was to keep that boss CCed or everyone would get jacked.

I agree with the assessment that they should commit to a mechanic. I was really bummed when the game came out and they had been talking about “Control” being one of the playstyles and it was unequivocally not true.

Skill splits would fix a lot of the issues, but they won’t commit to it.

I do not understand how wailing on a stun locked boss for 20 minutes would be fun…

“Control” play style is very true….in PvP and WvW.

The problem is you cant have Tequatl run up on shore, then immediatly get 6 stuns to the face, and sit there doing nothing for 5 minutes. That’s not fun, nor engaging.

Personally, I have multiple sets planned anyway so not a huge deal to me, I guess.

My concern isn’t so much what will be the ‘meta’ for HoT combat, but rather is HoT combat balanced around ascended stats or exo stats. If it is balanced around Ascended, could we potentially see agony come into play in the open world? Could ascended become a necessity as opposed to its current status of ‘luxury’? (Can you imagine the screaming?)

This will not happen. Ascended is tied to Fractals more than anything else. further it does not have much in the way of stat increases to speak of.

Every class viable, and almost any class can be made near optimally. Rangers can do very well in WvW, and PvE. I main my Ranger in WvW and its a lot of fun, I can win 1v1’s plenty of time. More of this game comes down to skill rather than skills. Granted, stats and skill setup count for something. I have been in plenty of AC runs when I was leveling up and out damaging and playing the level 80s simply due to knowledge.

As for money, I do the following:
1. I put about half of what I have currently away at the same time every day, usually just before bed.
2. Sell materials. That nets you quite a bit.
3. Compare sell prices to Merchant for anything over 2silver. More often than not selling on trading post will net you more.
4. If its 25s sell price or more on trading post, sell it on the trading post immediately.

I combine this with my usual $20 every paycheck converted into Gold and I have quite a bit to play with.

ANET has done a great job in writing the characters of Destinies Edge A-Team, except for Eir, she needs something to flesh her out. Good character on the surface, but it is not obvious in game how she is beside strong, independent norn woman who need no man (except for once because Braham).

I am not a huge fan of Destinies Edge B team for many of the reasons listed above, but I have come to enjoy Rox, Braham, and Taimi. I personally love Rox because she seems one of the few competent and realistic thinkers of the group. Shes almost an apprentice of Rytlok and it shows. While she is not as single minded as Rytlok, she still brings some of his harsh attitude.

Braham, I did NOT like early in Season 2. He seemed like a idealistic dolt who was trying to hard. This has changed a bit as the season has progressed and I have liked where he has ended up as a character. He has been brought down a bit, and has become more confident in his own abilities and individuality.

Taimi I just enjoy. I do not know why I enjoy her, but shes an awesome, and spunky little Asura. I also had no idea her Golem/Suit had cat ears…

Marjory and Kasmeer can just….go do their thing in a whole, somewhere far from the plot. I dislike both intently. Their characters seem forced, and while Marjory is at least competent, she tries to play leader and it simply does not work. Kasmeer is obnoxiously air headed and is painfully, obviously eye candy.

Their romance is forced, and thrust into your face like, “Look! We are doing a gay relationship! Look at us! LOOK AT US!”

I really do not know the philosophy behind this. It seems almost like a separate writing team was set up for this, and as the OP said, the other relationships in the game were done VERY well. It was obvious but not shoved into your face. The players could draw the lines to fill in the blank areas, and while it was an obvious driving point for some of the characters, it did not hijack the story.

As for another character I see a lot of hate for online, Trahearne.

I love Trahearne personally. I think this was one of the best characters added to the story, definitely on par with Destinies Edge. The development of this character directly parallels and mirrors the player characters, and you can see him (and in extension the pact) growing and finding its feet in areas they are not comfortable with. He did not want to be a hero but he embraced it when he realized he had to be, he did not fight it or try to ignore it or be the fatalistic hero, that many games make the mistake of doing. He became what Tyria needed. I am happy to see with the growth of the Living Story, they further develop him and the pact. Playing in the Silverwastes and the Stories, hes obviously grown into the Pact commander. Hes decisive and commanding. The Pact itself (if anyone has noticed) is no longer split between the three orders. They are all labelled as pact, they all work together well, and the architecture and style as well has taken on a unified look. The Pact and Trahearne grew. This is the biggest selling point for me on Season 2. ANET looked at the development of how the world will be with the killing of Zhaitan.

Also, if you do not like Tybalt, you are dead to me. That lovable dork is my hero.

I would be fine for anything to spend some of my 500,000 karma on. Especially things that can be fun toys.

Ppl still write here because they want this game to be good. They spent their money and time on this game and many of them is still actively spending money on this game. It is customers right to complain and this is the only way a company can feel obligated to do anything. If more ppl share the same attitude as the V-bot, companies won’t care even a little about quality of products. Bussiness is bussiness but money comes from ppl so we, customers, must be treated with respect. We are no walking wallets.

I wish there is a red post saying "we are sorry, it happened because …. " not so much but helps to understand why this patch is so annoying. Good ideas, bad execution.

I know, I still dont understand why anyone would test the product without being paid.

That’s what we do every patch day. I’ve lately come to the conclusion that GW2 doesn’t need a player test server: it already has mass quantities of player test servers. Mine’s called Crystal Desert! When I’m not being megaserved, that is. What’s yours?

wow… I think… you are right. This whole game feels sometimes like beta test going too long.

The companies should be treated with respect as well. This is something everyone seems to forget. They are providing services in exchange for that money. They are made of people trying their kitten dest to make their customer base happy. They are not REQUIRED to build this game, they are not required to make you happy. That is their privilege. They could all sell the game, and then leave to work for other companies. In business, BOTH sides must have mutual respect for one another. If someone truly believes that ANET, or any company, should be cow towing to their wims, then they have the wrong philosophy of life.

Complaining does no good in any game. I see very little reason for people in general to complain about issues and such in game. Report them, let the public know about them, then move on. Complaining over and over about an issue will not make the fix happen any faster. It will put pressure on the devs to simply throw in a hot fix quickly with inadequate testing, when this happens, more bugs arise.

Chill off, be patient. A fix will come. If you have been in the game since before beta, a couple weeks of buggy game play is nothing. For a game with no sub, ANET has done an outstanding job of QA. Every company gets one or two that slip through their grasp.

Also the four years thing was a brain fart, I meant 3.

The bugs are not bad, they are simply noticeable. Obvious bugs are always seen as a lot more serious even if they are benign, such as the shout bug currently running around that makes me crack up every time.

Give it time to be fixed, and everything will get back to normal. If you leave a game because an oops patch, really the only big one over FOUR YEARS, then you are probably not enjoying the game anyways. This is simply an excuse. There is no reason to come onto the forums and berate the game. Especially since its a free sub game.

I can +1 the return of the Lore screens. I KNOW Guild Wars has a massive amount of lore, but ANET has this compulsive need to hide their lore from the general public, that I do not understand. Are they scared people will discover the lore and hidden deep inside it is ANET’s plan to take over the internet world?

All other legends are race founders, except glint. Glint is a dragon. Glint had egg.s Legends are founders of their races. Glint player dragon race confirmed!

How is Shiro a founder of a race? Mallyx was a Morganite leader, not a founder. Jhalis is also far from the founder of Dwarves, in fact he oversaw the destruction of that race. Unless you consider the stone version of Dwarves a new race, but even then it was “The Great Dwarf” who designed the ritual.

I took liberties.

Greeeeat.

So I’m being forced to buy gems to get a pair of pants. Forgive me for taking a hiatus, Anet :/

No one’s forcing you to do anything, for starters. You also get, you know, all the content that came along with those living story updates, not just the one skin. You can also convert gold to gems, which you should be able to earn in a couple of days playing all that FREE content in the giant FREE Silverwastes zone hosted on FREE servers by devs that don’t work for FREE.

Did someone say FREE? All this free content? That could have been gated behind a full blown expansion pack or dlc? That we get as monthly updates to a living story? A growing main quest adding onto story elements from the past? That kind of completely free content?

ANET has said multiple times. Everything is optional, and open to the community while its in its free stage of 2 week download window. If you miss it, its gone, or you can pay an EXTREMELY MODERATE fee to unlock it. Every other game of this quality has $15 monthly. They are asking for $10. Not even monthly.

Sorry about rant. Sorta tired of this type of complaining. I missed Season 1. That’s my fault. I do not expect to get access to all the cool stuff that happened. I will simply look forward to what happens next, and let folks who participated have their baubles. I will find my own.
