Thief by far.
I can solo 100 mobs. Seriously.

Anyone still claiming thief is not OP?
I’ve actually seen a thief do that. Not 100 mobs but a heck of a lot more than my ranger could handle.
I’ll grant that it’s not just thief OPness that makes it possible, it does require player skill.

Rangers because all the bots do it.

Only because bots are stupid and ranger is pretty easy.
Then again almost any class is easy enough for bots in a group of 4 or 5. Many bots are guardian or warrior.

You probably won’t see many mesmer bots, but mesmer might work well for DE farming because it has instant cast aoe. Not a whole lot of damage (though decent) but sure to tag the mobs before they die.

Why is the camera so focused on the floor???

because of the very low Point Of View angle in this game. Instead of a standard 90-100 degrees, you are currently restricted to 65.

You mean Field Of View. In GW2 it’s 75, same as Half-Life and many other games, some go as low as 60. A difference is that in many other games FOV can be adjusted/tweaked, and people who do that typically increase FOV to about 90 or 100, maybe as much as 120 for competitive FPS gaming.

The issue with looking at the floor in GW2 is caused by the low position of the camera and the fact that the cam is aimed at the chest of the character, so that if you look up the cam slides over the ground closer to your char, which then blocks most of your view. The game sure does not encourage the player to look upwards.
Most other 3rd person games have the cam aimed at the head or slightly above it, or have the point that it aims at dependent on the distance of the cam from the character.

In GW2 however the gathering nodes are based off the individual player.

Other MMOs do it wrong because the more players there are, the more mats are needed.

This in turn has caused the Devs to implement mechanics such as Diminishing Returns.

The reason for DR is anti-farming. Anet wants players to move around in a zone.

Or alternatively: do PvP-ers PvP because of the fun they have PvP-ing, or for the legendary rewards?

What's the point in having levels?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

helladoom.4317

“The higher levels give higher rewards”

The higher levels have higher cost and face tougher mobs, so relatively it’s the same.

The only real differences between low level an high level is that low level can not do high level content, and high level has more skills to choose from.

“I’ve met countless people who refused to play GW1 because it only had 20 levels.”

Perhaps it would help if Anet would go all the way with their design philosophy and ditch levels all together. At least then it would be obvious to everyone that it’s fundamentally different than traditional computer mmorpgs.

Though there probably should be a few tiers: something like (optional) tutorial with skill progression, casual/normal, casual/hard, hardcore.

Having no levels sure would make level downscaling and upscaling a lot simpler…

“…any character can effectively level in any zone that is around their level or lower. You can be level 50 and thinking “I’m tired of Shiverpeak snow-themed zones”, and go play in Queensdale instead.”

For high level characters the xp they get from low level DE’s and Hearts is very small relative to the amount of xp needed to gain a level. Yes a high level char can level up in low level areas, but it takes for ever.

FOV (Field of View) - a physiological plea

in Suggestions

helladoom.4317

Imo Anet’s most peculiar argument against increased FOV is that it would make positional awareness less important.
The way i see it a larger FOV only makes it less necessary to pan the view a lot in order to obtain positional awareness. It does not make it less important.

Poor man’s solution for legal increased FOV: in GW2 graphics options select windowed mode then decrease vertical size of the window as you see fit. Vertical FOV stays the same, horizontal FOV increases.

My problem with the default FOV is that it often feels cramped, and makes it harder to maintain situational awareness.

Ari, if they ARE rebooting them on a weekly basis it isn’t actually having any effect on the “bugged” state of certain DE’s and skill points.

Problem is that insofar that it has an effect on bugged content, it bugs out again very soon (within one or two days) after. That’s why some people say daily resets are in order as a temporary workaround until the actual bugs are fixed.

Agreed. The average dagger in GW2 is the size of a standard issue Roman soldier’s sword. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gladius

A bit of exaggeration is fine in a fantasy game, but in GW2 there’s definitely a mismatch between the size of swords and the size of most other weapons.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

DE’s as such are not a first (see Rift), but GW2 expands on it with chain events and more variety.

The big difference with both heart quests and dynamic events, versus traditional questing, is that players can join in half-way without any hassle whatsoever. In most other mmorpgs one can not join half-way (see GW1 instanced questing).

In addition the downscaling means level requirement for quests are greatly reduced.

Compared to most other mmorpgs these ‘innovations’ greatly promote the multiplayer aspect of “massively multiplayer online”, which for most players is the reason to play such games.

‘Getting the gear to play the game’ is the mindset I was unfortunately under while raiding in WoW. I didn’t feel all that accomplished picking up a Tier X weapon, because I knew it wouldn’t last; I was just using it so I could gear up in Tier X so I could get past the gearcheck that let me move on to the content that gave me Tier X+1…

I use the term “gear” to refer to its primary importance: the stats.

Few people put on gear with poor stats just because it looks better, but instead (certainly at lower levels) settle for gear that does not necessarily look the way they want but has the stats they need.

By “getting the gear to play the game” i mean that the player is content when he has the gear that he needs (stat-wise) even when playing the game is then no longer rewarded with gear that has yet better stats. Imo getting gear for the looks of it is another matter.

I share your sentiments regarding the gear treadmill, but i’d call that “playing the game to get the gear (because of the stats)”.

I can already perform well in every level of PVE content, so now I’m free to do what I want. Collecting rare weapon/armor skins is just part of that.

Looks like what you want is play PvE content for token rewards; gear for the looks of it, not for yet better stats.

Because the game is not dependent on gear

It is gear dependent insofar that certain content is practically undoable without gear with good stats; on-level gear, preferably green or better, regardless of the looks.

In order to “perform well in every level of PVE content” you need gear with good stats, which you have acquired.
To me that is ‘you got the gear that you need so that you can do what you want’ or “getting the gear (stat-wise) to play the game” (which, in case it matters to you, is perfectly fine with me).

Thanks Anet for the great patch.

But you can demand that the wheels don’t fall off.
And if the wheels do fall off then it’s not special if the dealership fixes it. There’s actually law (in most civilized countries) that says a product must do what it can reasonably expected to do.

I does not take much to make it less obvious to the point where false positives become a possibility: better char names, don’t cluster, don’t stand in one place for long. Though it might be that those would require more human intervention than the bot houses can afford.

The one thing that is unmistakably obvious is gold spammers, but i understand Anet is rather slow in responding to reports on those.

A partial solution against botting might be to introduce a small pay-as-you play fee, but that seems to be against Anet’s free-to-play philosophy.

“the one thing i probally dislike most about mmos is trying to find groups. sitting around trying to find a group to do some hard area waiting and asking for a group then just giving up because im not the certain type of character or have the right gear to join a group.”

Interestingly GW2 solved that problem for the most part by downscaling, removing the trinity, dynamic events, trait selection, and map design/mob placement, etc. You can go pretty much anywhere and find multiplayer PvE action.

Unfortunately it kind of falls apart with lvl 80 PvE content. Dungeons require sitting around trying to find a group. Orr is tedious and apparently not intended to be explored solo (not much exploring when essentially running for your life almost all the time).

Who cares if the endgame model is fine, when the endgame zones suck donkey kitten.

Actually Anet intends the whole GW2 world to be endgame zones, and most of the lower level zones are fine. It’s just that currently the downscaling and loot drops don’t fit that intention.

End game is 20 minutes of spamming “2” in a turret Most exciting boss fight ever.

End game is what you make of it. If you want to spam “2”, great.

Sadly, it’s not. The final boss you literally have only one way to hit him and that’s to use a turret that only has three abilities: move left, fire, and move right. And the boss never moves so you only use fire. repeatedly. For 20 minutes.

That’s the end of the personal story line (i agree that it’s very sad), – it’s not what is meant by “endgame”.

It is as though Orr was designed so that just traveling/exploring/finding DE action is much harder than in the rest of the game, thus reintroducing hindrances to PvE multiplayer that the rest of the game has resolved. Forcing people to look for others to team up with doesn’t work, having people run into each other out in the world (as it happens at lower levels) does work.
