To me this is advertising the lesser of a great many evils. If it tied to account rank, then I suppose it’s similar to LoL’s system where you don’t participate in ranked play til 30. Which is fine i suppose. Still they are slowly breaking away from the system that brought me to be interested in gw2 pvp.

Well, I agree, I don’t think unlocks should be added.

This was my suggestion to adding unlocks in a more constructive way, at least, compared to the 25 skill point requirement for the new skills.

I’m firmly against the idea of progression being added to PvP in the way we saw with the new skills (25 skillpoints, fork over 40k glory for level tomes or go PvE for a full day!).

However, if an unlock system was paired with a tournament rank requirement, it could be very useful. I’ve seen top fifty players solo queue and wind up with rank 1s on their team who have obviously never PvPed before. This is really bad, both for the high ranked players, and the rank 1 who gets steamrolled all game!

Instead of basing these unlocks off of skillpoints/glory, what about if Arenanet locked tournament participation until rank 20, but had unlockable runes/skills/sigils/amulets every rank up until that point?

This would mean everyone playing in tournaments was still on a completely even level, but also gives a sense of progression and achievement to new players, while simplifying the amount of things they need to think about when first starting out.

This is the first lengthy thread I’ve read in a while and I agree with every single point.

The pet mechanic would be a simple fix in my opinion:

F1: Attack target, Return to me (Toggle)
F2: Damage based ability
F3: Support/utility based ability
(F4):Guard/avoid combat

Both the F2 and F3 skills should be made to immediately override whatever else the pet has queued.

For a lot of pets this would be pretty simple to do. For example, a Raven pet’s F2 would be its current ability and its F3 would be its Swiftness (slightly toned down so as not to have perma swiftness, say 8 seconds on 20 second CD)

If I could have anything else I wanted I’d also ask for:

-Cool pet auto attack chains (three parts, with 3rd hit dealing big damage). This would be a cool way to promote skilled play by the ranger trying to lock down an opponent while his pet completes an auto chain

-More variety in terms of pets including condition based pets, pure support based pets (almost 0 damage), and reworked attacks so that there were no duplicate pets

-A rework to longbow and shortbow

-Active condition clearing added and Empathic Bond moved to Adept Tier (now: Your pet removes one condition every 10 seconds)

-A shout rework! (PLEASE)

Back in April he (the OP) said he mains thief, guard and mesmer.
He probably is either a guard complaining about getting his boons stolen by S/D thieves or a legit mesmer who gets 100-0 in a second by an eviscerate.

Still betting he plays Engi. If he played Guard he would complain about Engineer too.

Playing a bleeder build in spvp I would not be in favor of the decrease in angle for the bleed. Bleeding is one of the better conditions and is the one we have the most access to. Fighting a target 1v1 it is very hard to get hits from directly behind consistently.

Removing poison from this weapon would make it near useless.

As for the daze it is what makes it possible for me to kill thieves. One well timed daze as the thief tries to enter stealth and its all over.

The short bow work well as a power and condition weapon. This would make it a weaker power weapon and a condition weapon with more condition but in the end still weaker.

Shortbow Ranger don’t just auto attack. Each skill on the bow plays a vital role. They are use to keep the fight in out favor. Eliminate the regen or lower the healing. Evade that backstab. Cripple the foe so our pets can do its job. Daze to stop stealth or prevent a stomp on a teammate.

We need more group utility while a blind field does that we don’t need to step on thieves as they already provided that we need something else.

I do definitely understand what you are saying. And while it is true that all ranger SB attacks serve a unique purpose, the weaponset feels decidedly linear to me. It also feels like the bulk of the gameplay seen with ranger shortbow is autoattacking. To be honest I feel like Thief SB and Warrior LB outclass both ranger bows in terms of the design of the kit, and the overall effectiveness.

However, I think you might be overlooking the possibilities of the changes I’ve included. With the ability to stealth on shortbow for example you could throw a stealthed Axe 2 directly into someones face followed by a dagger 5 for 8+ bleeds with bleed on crit trait. For me at least, gameplay like this is just more satisfying than autoattacking.

Also, I didn’t remove the poison from shortbow 2. I turned it into AoE instead, although I do think that SB 2 is workable and a good attack.

I’d take your version of the shortbow anyday over the current one. I like the idea of making it a little more AoE centric by default.

Some tiny changes I would like to see to your list (my opinion): For concussion shot, since you asked, I would make it less position based honestly. I’d like it to apply stun on interrupt, as opposed to just from behind. Not sure about the base function of it not on interrupt. I don’t feel like a player should be rewarded for throwing out an interrupt randomly and hitting nothing, so I would prefer the daze to be removed entirely. I don’t know, maybe just regularly, a higher than autoattack damage 100% projectile finisher that stuns for 1-2 seconds (as balance dictates) on interrupt. That sounds strong enough to me, and it would allow you to setup some good combos with shortbow 2 and 4.

On to 4, I was going to suggest making it a blast finisher, but I then reread and realized it was a blind field, and now no longer have any suggestions for changes

I’ve also considered the possibility of concussion shot applying confusion. Say, 3-5 stacks. It could have a unique purple swirl animation or something added, although some might say that confusion doesn’t belong on ranger. Confusion would synergize nicely with the interrupt, “I interrupted your heal, now you will take damage when you try to use it again” essentially. Considering that my changes nerf the condition application aspect of the autoattack though, the confusion probably wouldn’t be overpowered.

My conception of shortbow on ranger is kind of influenced by my experience with the thief shortbow, but I feel like the weapon should be ideal for skirmishing (fights consisting of say, 4-8 people. I think these changes would give a better reputation to the shortbow in pvp and also make it more useful for wvwing in small groups at least.

PvP is currently based around a thing called conquest, which forces people to contest small node points. Wells are good for hurting people trying to hold on to these nodes.

As both a thief and ranger player, I’ve always loved my thief shortbow and thought ranger shortbow was about the dullest weapon in the game.

Thief shortbow has so many uses (mobility, evades, single target DPS, multi target DPS, weakness+ poison, cleave for stomping) and combos with itself excellently. Ranger shortbow has a simple autoattack with basic kiting and an interrupt.

The only real reason shortbow is still taken right now in tPvP is the fact that it has a ranged autoattack and has that interrupt. The middle 3 skills are really underwhelming. Shortbow is good for proccing Sun Spirit burns on specific targets.

One of the things I find rather ridiculous about ranger shortbow is the amount of hate it receives from players of other classes. It in reality is not very good. Spirits are good, yes. Pets can be good, yes. Ranger shortbow is pretty wimpy. A thief can autoattack on a ranger for 2-3k with shortbow with his bouncing autoattack (hits: ranger, pet, ranger). If pumped up with full berserkers, a ranger can hit about 700 single target damage with shortbow.

My first suggestion for ranger shortbow is the autoattack:

Crossfire: This attack now pierces targets. It applies one stack of bleed for 3 seconds if hitting from behind. Fire rate reduced by 10%

Currently, Ranger shortbow applies bleeds from about a 270 degree range around a target. This change would make shortbow only apply its bleed if hitting from a 180 degree angle behind the target. This means you can be positioned pretty lazily and still put a lot of bleed damage on someone really fast. By making the angle of bleed application smaller it forces condition rangers to try and position more smartly. Making the attack pierce again allows for rangers to play with positioning to maximize effectiveness. Note that in non-multitarget scenarios this is a nerf to shortbow.

Acid Rain: This attack would act like a shorter version of Longbow 5 or Icebow 4, where multiple arrows come down inside a ground targeted AoE.

The purpose behind this change would be to make Shortbow again more useful in skirmishing but also to reduce the amount of single target poison a ranger could keep on a target. (Sword 3 and Dagger 4 are already permanent poison, not to mention many pets poison as well).

Acrobatic Shot: Leap backwards firing a shot which grants quickness to you and your pet. This is now a leap finisher instead of a projectile finisher. It now grants swiftness to both you and your pet for 5 seconds. CD has been increased to 10 seconds.

This change seeks to make Quick Shot which is currently just used as a spam evade into a valued leap finisher which can be used from different fields for a more powerful effect. It maintains its evade frame but the cooldown is slightly increased.

This is where my big change for ranger comes into play. I understand some people might not like it. However, in my opinion for smart play & maneuvering and also has a good amount of counterplay.

Wildfire: Fire a smoking arrow which creates a blind field at a target location, pulsing 3 times and then bursting into flame.

How this attack would look: 1/2 cast time, a path like arcing arrow and a radius of 180. It would pulse each second applying 2 seconds of blind and then as it disappeared cause 4 seconds of burning.

Yes, burning on shortbow for rangers. However, it would be extremely easy to dodge this burning in a small fight because the field would pulse for 3 seconds before the burning was applied. Only with a well timed immobilize or axe chill would a ranger be able to get this off on a single target.

The blind field would allow a ranger to combine the blind field with the leap finisher from Acrobatic shot for 3 seconds of stealth which could be used to reposition for landing autoattack bleeds on a target.

Concussion Shot:

I have mixed feelings about Concussion Shot, it is a very, very good interrupt against all heals with long cast times. It also doesn’t have much counterplay. I think that I would either leave this skill unchanged or add a completely different skill. Any suggestions for Shortbow 5?!

I’d also be very interested to see what other people have to suggest about ranger shortbow. Do you like the weapon the way it is? Do you have your own attack ideas? Do you think the kit allows for skilled play? And, what do you think of my suggestions?

5. Berserkers Stance. Remove the immunity to conditions, reduce the recharge to 30 seconds, for 10 seconds, the Warrior moves 100% faster and stun duration reduced by 50%. For added fun, each time the Warrior is stunned, it gains might.

Hammer isn’t nearly fine. Sure you have some evades and stun breaks, but if you are caught in combo – you are just dead instanly. IWIN button shich you must struggle against? This isn’t pve, warriors aren’t bosses, this isn’t nearly fine.
Surely you can outdamage healing signet if you are glass paper fresh air and warrior is afk. Otherwise running in circles is kinda enough to survive ele.
You vision of bers stance is just horrifying. Nope, big solid NOPE.

I have NEVER lost a 1v1 against a Warrior on my Elementalist. The only time I lost was when stun duration was bugged about 2 metas ago. Otherwise, I’ve never lost 1v1 against a Warrior, the supposed top tier class on the lowest tier class, simple as that.

Meanwhile Engineers, Rangers and Necromancers are running rampant with OP skills and traits as their stuff requires more skill in spamming.
Since when Engineers applying 45 seconds of poison balanced? My favorite is 20 seconds of chilled. At this rate we’ll never leave the condi meta.

Also, no good Elementalist will ever use Fresh Air, I am utterly ashamed a build actually exists with that worthless, trash trait.

I hate to say it, over damaging Healing Signet is more on player skill. It doesn’t help that the Warrior can abuse immunities with it for it’s passive to trigger more, nerf the immunities and the skill passive isn’t much of an issue.
It’s just a noob stomper, that’s all it is.

My version of berserkers stance is fine, in my opinion being immune to conditions for 8 seconds is more powerful, any sort of hard counter is bad and some strange reason developers always make one and it always ends badly (I’m looking at you Kassadin).

There’s a reason why top tier teams are running warriors, sometimes double warrior over ele. Your idea for berserker’s stance is terrible. And if you’ve never lost a 1v1 to warrior, you are fighting noobs.

Also, to the original poster: Nice research! I spent a lot of time around where you are on the leaderboards and necromancers seemed really, really popular. Now I’m floating between 100-300 on team queue/solo queue on both my accounts and I’m not noticing nearly as many necros.

From my perspective Engineer has an extremely low skill floor. Put on protection injection and automated response and just spam as many nades and bombs as possible and you’ll be effective at mid level pvp. I did this on my alt and won my first 9/10 solo queue games, ending up ranked 300

On the flip side it definitely has a high skill ceiling compared to some classes and is one of the harder classes to master imo.

The biggest problem I have with healing signet is not that it’s overpowered. That could be debated. I think Longbow on warriors is extremely overpowered and is carrying the class right now.

The biggest problem I have with healing signet is that its really the only skill in the game that you don’t have to use, or even interact with at all, to receive the benefit from.

I personally think that right now Thief is extremely strong in team queue, although apparently quite a few teams don’t agree with me. Guardian is essential for big midfights and proper ressing. Spirit Ranger is still strong but definitely not as good as it was. Warrior is acting as an all purpose 1v1/teamfight cleave/stomp monster and its still acceptable to run two of them at once. They lack any real counter. Necromancer has gotten quite a bit weaker except for minion builds which aren’t amazing in team queue. The vigor nerf on engineers is definitely noticeable and I don’t even play one. They are still great, but I don’t think they are a must have like the rest of what I view as the top tier. Mesmer right now are kind of a wildcard. I think we will see them reentering the meta soon.

Combustive Shot kills build diversity with warriors because it makes longbow by far the best option on Warrior. It gives warrior a free condi cleanse on an extremely short cooldown and deals massive damage both with conditions and burning. It requires literally no skill to use due to the face that it covers a huge radius and pulses multiple times. Until longbow is nerfed to become a skill based weapon, it will remain the staple warrior weaponset.

I’d switch Entangle to RaO in a heartbeat. Stability is too important imho, and might always helps.
Overall build isn’t bad, but if I were you, I’d just go for a Apo trap build and get rid of shortbow

As I say in my guide, I do switch utilities depending on who I’m going to fight.

And shortbow synergizes better with my build than any other weapon set due to how fast it fires and how many bleeds I can stack while kiting.

How does the trapper build work exactly ? I have played the spirit build and i thought it was cool just cause of the survivability it offers lol

Trapper build is just an offensive condition overload build. Stack bleeds, burn and poison while having relatively high toughness. It’s decent for midfighting and protecting home point.

Not much health, not much armor. I am not sure how you are able to survive much in melee range after evades are on CD.

If you have not tried this build, you probably don’t understand how hyper-aggressive the playstyle is. Both shortbow and dagger evades are on a low cooldown and I have multiple cripples, as well as protection as soon as I get hit for more than 2k damage.

lets discuss ranger builds that take skill to play:

BM – leave the pet on a node and kite from afar
Power Ranger – spam longbow skills while standing on top of a ledge

guys, running a squishy build doesnt make you a better player at all. you think you’re good because you killed a lot using a power build? if it werent for the bunkers on your team, you could have died before even getting those kills. believe me, i did run those builds you were talking about. this hate towards spirit rangers is completely insubstantial.

if it makes you feel better running a non-spirit build then go ahead. you wanna feel good about yourselves by calling spirit rangers thrash? just keep doing it. it does make you all happy.

No one called spirit rangers trash. You just sound completely ignorant saying that spirit ranger is the king of 1v1 in this game lol. Also, BM rangers are MORE survivable and hold points better than the typical carrion spirits build. No one is disagreeing that spirit ranger is the most viable team queue build right now.

Also, it’s pretty funny that you don’t even have a clue what BM regen builds are. Shows how well you know the class.

I’d be happy to 1v1 you on a BM regen ranger tomorrow if you want. You can show me how good spirit ranger is in 1v1.

Wow this build is amazing. I used it and I 1v6ed. I used signet of spite and then I epidemic and everyone was just like ‘dead’. Then I went into deathshroud and back out healing for almost 1k health.

The idea behind active play is doing something to cause some effect.

Passive procs on spirits, empathic bond, engi automated response, guardian purity, are examples of inactive play: things that happen by themselves with no input from the player necessary.

Whether trap builds require thoughtful/skilled play is a different question

not because you wanna play BM or power ranger makes them viable in pvp. please stop these nonsense. stop giving false hope to rangers who dislike spirit builds. just embrace it.

I dunno I played BM in team queue the other day and ended up as rank 50. So I guess maybe it’s viable.

Also, Eurantien ran a power build when he got to rank 4 solo queue or something, Twerp is in the top 20 running traps.

dude, i play mesmer, necro, warrior and ranger. all these toons are good in 1v1 but a well played spirit ranger can beat all the other three hands down.

I think what you mean to say is that Spirit Ranger is the only thing that you can win with. Obviously, spirit of nature is exceedingly cheap in 1v1s. But you don’t need to spec as a spirit ranger to make use of that. BM regen ranger is stronger in 1v1s. Minion necro is also much stronger than spirit ranger for dueling. Hammer/longbow blows up a spirit ranger almost instantly.

Hmm you are right. I’m actually currently using sigil of torment right now which appears to not affect sigil of earth in any way, but sigil of geomancy messes it up. I’ll edit the guide later

I didn’t put sigil of torment in the guide since it’s pretty expensive.
