Yeah I was a bit uncertain too, had too look twice. I think two fields are colored the same so it looks a bit different.
Tormented is my favourite. I also recently bought the Super Shield skin, not that I think it’s particulary nice but IT SHIIINES.. couldn’t resist. I got all other mesmer super skins except the pistol so why not get that kitten shield too right?

ye all dps, the best defense of mesmer is not getting hit , no pt loading up on defense stats when you run a burst build.
Totally agree on this, the high dps is instead of defence too, the idea is to just push them down early in the fight, kick them out of their routine, if you don’t do that you enable their play and you have a fight that is a lot harder.
I like to mix in some assassins to pump up the crit chance. If you fight thieves the best way to win is to just explode everything you got ASAP. An super early 2-clone shatter can get a thief out of rotation and go defensive and do all kinds of nice mistakes. AGGRESSION is they key.
Giants, I only solo roam in WvW and I love it. Thieves indeed are a problem but for me they are really the only problem (except some kittening guardians that just won’t die) and I win about 30-40% of the thief fights.
Some tips and insights.
- Staff, bring a kittening staff. Thieves don’t like them.
- Burst, thieves need to be taken down fast in WvW, if you almost kill them, they just disengage and come back, at least the good ones.
- Condition builds are very strong against thieves, torment and confusion is amazing.
- PU is like a thieves repellent, they come up and sniff you and take off, if they stay you usually win unless noob, then outcome uncertain.
- Learn their rotations, when you start to see the pattern it’s a bit easier to avoid their damage or at least limit it.
- Thieves can cloak & dagger you phantasms without any chance for you to stop them so phantasm builds work only against inexperienced thieves.
I switch a lot between builds but right now I’m in a power shatter mode and it’s amazingly fun to burst down thieves but I often get slaughtered, but it’s worth it.
Get a Rabid and a Berserker set and try both power and condition. If you have problem with rabid/condition you can try a Dire set and with a MtD build. I started with a power PU build with Berserker gear but Rabid armor. Was a good mix to get the hang of things.
TL;DR
Thieves are difficult but not a reason not to. Do it.
We gotta have GvG fights! Against thieves (if they have a guild) for a laugh.
I ran a classic 44006 gs/sw+p with Halting Strike yesterday just to try it out and I gotta say I really like it. Was a bit skeptical about the concept but it can really hit hard. F3 now suddenly can do damage as well as GS5 and P5. It’s a keeper.
With condition it’s pretty easy to beat thieves, it’s a lot harder with a power build. I played condition before but I felt it got boring, it’s too easy and just a boring fight process.
For me the problems beating thieves isn’t a bad thing, WHEN I beat them I get the best high in the world. The other day I won a 1vs2 thieves with a power phantasm build I made myself, I felt I could just quit GW2 right there, my goal was achieved, then I realized they where low ranked so back to the battlefield.
There will never be a build that beats all classes/builds, I think shatter is the most capable and for me it’s the most fun. You win some, you loose some.
If I change I do it one or two at the time and for me it takes A LONG time to change. I only play once week though.
Thank you all!
And also, I don’t have a set color scheme for my mes yet. I’m still looking at options and trying to find combinations that fit nicely together.
Here is a discussion about different purples, might be interesting.

I’ve never tried shatter interrupt, I usually play mantra 06620 and I cant say I have a problem with ele’s but a big problem with thiefs, I feel ele’s are very sensitive to interrupt and go down pretty swiftly. From playing PVP in a lot of MMOS I’ve come to the conclusion that rooting/immobilize is a very powerfull tool to induce stress , CI might be the key, it kittens up routines and makes people frustrated.
With shatter it’s easier to kill thiefs if I get the chance, with mantra interrupt I can fight for quite a while but unless it’s a duel they gtfo and kill me when I’m not ready. I know other more skilled mesmers handle thiefs quite well with interrupt but it requires lots of knowledge on thief attacks and a kitten quick response time that I don’t think I have (any more)
I’ve been playing with a quite similar build but I use mantras and sc+p / sw+f and traited focus. I mostly play solo in WvW but I tried it in spvp and it worked pretty well (without the Defender rune though).
It works extremely well against rangers, necros, warriors and engineers. Got totally obliterated by a guardian (he just ate my phantasms and health) and it works quite well against thiefs and eles, eles take time but down they go. The weakness is boon ripping which could be addressed by taking null field or AT.
It has really nice dps and good pressure capabilities. I’ve even fallen in love with the focus which I hated before. The defender Rune is quite amazing too, that aegis every 10 sec is such a life saver and the 4-5k heal that pops suddenly is like a christmas present every time.
I’ll see if I can put together some vids.
One of my characters.
Ah a fellow glow junkie
Hmm is it just my misunderstanding or did you not use your F1? It is your main source of s
pike damage, after all the build is called a Shatter build
He did use F1.
“I start most fights off with GS 4 > GS 3 > GS 2 > f1 > GS 5 for…”
OP, Hard to say what you do wrong without seeing some gameplay or more detailed on how you loose. I mostly do WvW but I do some PvP and I dont feel weak really, I also use the meta shatter build. I ONLY play mesmer though so I got nothing to compare with :-/
Spatial Surge aaaaand… The prestige. hmm. brb.
Edit:
The Pew Pew Sniper!
Long range interrupt and pew pew, almost no skills required, just sit comfortably on a small hill or an obstacle of your own selection and autoattack, occasionally drop an interrupt to bump up the pew pew speed. If they get close, drop The Prestige and blink away and start again.
(edited by jenzie.4083)
I started a new mesmer and the mirror heal was default, dont remember it was before?
It’s pretty nice acutally.
You guys are being too kitten him. Anyone willing to take the time to explain a build is always helpful in my books
I agree on this, but my first thought was the same, “wtf this a regular MtD build… with Phantasmal Fury, why?” I guess he has been busy PVP and working on this build instead of hanging around here and probably missed a lot of poeple already posted about this OR belives his small changes to the build really makes a difference, if that’s the case prove it.
OP, to save you from the Forum Fury (pun intended) I suggest you change the name of the build to not be something of your own since A LOT of people have made similar builds, even days before the trait was implemented. If you reference the other builds and say it’s a new version no one, well at least not EVERYONE will F1 your kitten .
You did a great job explaining everything though and nice formatting if that is of any comfort, I really mean it, it’s properly done, just some months late.
44006 is probably the most difficult build you can roam with, it is really fun when you’ve learned to play with it and even then you die a lot.
Condition is easily the best for survival but it gets a bit boring after a while imo but maybe a good start. Google for Napalm Cat 2.0 its quite fun and got really good survivability.
If you want to try power go all berzerker gear but use Rabid armor and the 44600 build for more toughness and get a bit more juice from the conditions. Try playing with the weapons you are most comfortable with at first and then switch out one at the time. If you find all weapons equally annoying I’d use staff, it’s one of the best defensive weapons but with zerker gear it can pack a serious power punch too. 1h Swords attack #3 is a good defence AND good dmg dealer together with #2 to lock them down.
For me a crucial insight was to learn to retreat and positioning, use the environment to hide from damage. Run around a tree or a ruin. To become better at this, try to JUST stay alive, don’t do damage. When you got the dodging and trickery working bring out the weapons.
A VERY GOOD trait for survivability for solo roamers is Far-Reaching Manipulations that extends your Blink, I never leave home without it.
Thief/mesmer is a really good team up.
If you got a thief partner (with one of those insane damage builds, no kitten condition) you should try interrupt. You will almost be able to hear keyboards being smashed in frustration. Run PU or some armor with toughness because you will be one they go after. Check out the lockdown thread here on the forum, lots of builds there. I’d use one with staff.
Edit:
Here’s the Lockdown Thread:

Attack 3 plus torch phantasm adds 10(?) confusion, that hurts quite a bit on a opponent that isn’t careful. I’m actually using torch/scepter in an interrupt zerker build and those 10 stacks of confusion with the burning can really wreck some players even though I don’t have that much condition damage. The channeling attack hurts quite a lot too, I just wish it was a bit faster, they’ve nerfed confusion so much since launch I don’t think the slowness is justified.
Deceitful is a word I think fits the mesmer, here’s some synonyms.
http://www.thesaurus.com/browse/deceitful
Also, it’s kitten hard to spot when to interrupt without an enemy casting bar. How does one go at it?
First of all I’m no pro at interrupt but I thought I’d share my noob insights since I recognize your frustration. I was thinking the same thing when I started playing interrupt and to start I just guessed when they where gonna do something. Eventually I started spotting the animations and movement.
Good moments to be ready to interrupt:
- At fight start (obvious but often quite easy to hit it)
- When health is around half, many heal animations are big movements with arms in the sky.
- In a long fight when they have been retreating for a while, if you see them turn around (most attacks require to be faced at you).
- Like 1 second after you pop out of stealth, depending on the skill level of the opponent.
- Channeling animations! Rangers rapid fire thing is great to interrupt.
- Basically, look for animations other than running.
Also, remember that Stability is your enemy, remember to look for it and bring tools like Null Field or Arcane Thievery to remove it, some builds have a lot of stability so you need to rip that kitten out asap, especially Guardians and warriors.
Engineers with their kittening shield can be annoying too.
After a while you will learn to hit that interrupt really fast, for me when I play interrupt now I have a gut feeling when they will come and what to look for and slap that interrupt out of reflex.
Favorite skill to interrupt is that warrior jump thing (or is it guardians who do it? Maybe both?) anyway, really long load up for it and when they are midair -FLONK- they fall down and look silly.
Remember you can interrupt with the Mantra of Distraction without seeing or facing the enemy, just have them targeted. Perfect when being chased.
I tried this rune with knights gear and PU last night and I could easily manage a warrior and an ele, hard to get a down but I didn’t have too much time to experiment with different armor and weapon setups. I used sc+t / sw+p with a 06620 build with mantra heal. To be able to pop an aegis like that is really useful. I’ve been thinking about using sinister armor with this weapon setup to get more out of the scepter and torch. I’ve never used sinister before though so im very uncertain on the outcome.
I bought all purple colors bar two, most are pretty cheap. My favourite is Vincent which is kinda pricey.

BUT, generally speaking you’re not there for your damage, you’re there for the tricks you can do.
This. Yesterday I decided to go trolling and made a PU interrupt build with full zerker and, scepter+torch / sword+pistol and went off to the nearest BL (also tried the Defender Runes that’s been discussed). I had totally forgotten how effective PU is. I annoyed the hell out of a small roaming guild by constantly downing them one at the time, couldn’t really stomp, but I stopped five man from doing their work. Quality trolling time!

I also use several of the Super-skins (usually GS & sword)…and I am a tired father of 5! :P
Five!? That’s awesome, they do any grinding for you?
I got serveral super skins too, but the Shield never appealed to me until i looked at it wielded, the glow is very stronk.

Its great for WvW but not necessary, I like the phantasm both for dmg, stopping enemies when chasing and getting away and the push, which is amazing for trolling, (great for pushing people in the water to kill stacks of bloodlust). I usually run with GS/sw+p but last night after some tiresome thief fights that I lost I switched it out for staff/sw+focus. I keep changing all the time though, I think it comes down to which weapon that fits your play style. I’ve had great problems with the focus but last night something clicked and the pull field is a good substitute for the push.
I wish there was out-of-battle weapon sets that was easily switchable. So if I saw a thief I could switch to staff and if it was a necro use gs. If its just switching 2h its quite easy but when it’s 1H it’s a little bit trickier.

Those weapons together are optimal for condition builds and not very good for power builds, so I suggest you either play condition in PVE and ignore that it’s not an optimal build OR you get some other weapons and play a power build.
If you want to go condition you can try the builds I mentioned above. You won’t find many condition PVE builds, so look for pvp condition builds. A good one is also Napalm Cat 2.0, google it, it uses cheap runes too and it’s very strong in duels and small skirmish in WvW, quite forgiving if you’re new to mesmering.
I googled it for you:

There are basically no PVE condition builds for the reasons both I and Fay explained. A enemy can have a limit of 25 stacks of each condition. That means if you are two in a group who apply conditions you can only apply roughly half of 25, depending on fast you can apply them. So 25 stacks of bleeds, 25 of torment one exception though and that is burning which stacks in duration. Not only condition builds add conditions, so maybe a power ranger adds bleeds too, only thing is he have very little condition damage AND take up room that YOUR powerful bleeds should use. So in reality you maybe add 10 bleed to an enemy, which sucks, also on thrashmobs there arent any time for adding bleeds, you need to be fast.
That’s why condition builds suck kitten in PVE and also the reason why there aren’t many condition builds for PVE. All this apply to group play, so if you solo World bosses and Dungeons use a condition build.
TL;DR There aren’t any PVE condition builds because they suck and no one will have you in their party.
Those weapons together are optimal for condition builds and not very good for power builds, so I suggest you either play condition in PVE and ignore that it’s not an optimal build OR you get some other weapons and play a power build.

Do conditions even work on world bosses?
Even if they do it’s a really bad idea since it’s 25 stacks shared between everyone doing condition damage :/
I don’t play much PvE but I know that no one really use condition builds for PVE unless you solo mobs and even then it’s not a very good idea. They all use berzerker gear and sw/sw +sw/focus if i recall correctly. The staff phantasm do hit pretty good with high amounts of conditions world bosses get so maybe you it could be a think if you went power. The reason for condition builds being a bad idea is the 25 stack cap which limits the damage you can do and if someone else do condition dmg you share the dmg pool.
I did try a MtD build (condition shatter mTd stands for Maim the Disillussioned a master trait) in PVE and it was pretty fun but I think power phantasm is more effective. If you do want to play condition anyway I suggest you look for MtD threads on the forum. Found this from frifox in another thread (non MtD): http://de.gw2skills.net/editor/?fhAQFAWlknpBtVoxTNUrNiuxY6H64AU2zPlMgdB-TxRGABAcBAUS5XuPAgEV/hNdAls/QVKBJFAMTjA-e
Or maybe we get a MH shield :p
( but the shield was on the characters left hand in the trailer, so no dark souls dual shieldinggoodbye dreams )
DUAL WIELD.
I hate mesmers too.. but duelling other mesmers is what you should do.
I target mesmers manually with clicking and try to stay calm. The clones only do the auto attack, they dont dodge, they dont go backwards, they dont jump, they dont strafe. Some mesmers are pretty good with mimic the clones though, I’m not one of them.
I’ve been using this build: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fhAQNAR8alknpRt1oxMNcrNiqxY6XSJGSGQBlMjtB-TlCEwAwUVw++DEeAAbVCa4gAwU5HL1a6obAwFA4xRAIAACA38m38m38mlCIilRA-w

It’s really fun, I play it very aggressively, like a shatter build, just drop hell on them, gtfo, back in. When I started playing interrupt I felt it was so hard to interrupt other players but now after a couple of months with it I’m so much more aware of what the other player is doing and their rotations.
I use DE for interrupts, vuln stacking and boon removal. I usually drop a F3 after my GS rotation to bump up the second burst to the max. Thiefs are a pain in the kitten as usual but I feel interrupts and high dmg is the best way to beat them, I try to get phantasms up while dodging BS’s and then interrupt them to feed them to the phantasms.
Even though I don’t have condition removal I haven’t really had problems with conditions so far and I am a bit surprised by this but I think the stress this build induces from high dmg and interrupts throws people of, or I’ve just been lucky, which could very well be the case.
This is my CI Mesmer build for WvW (note: WvW usually means im in a gank squad with my guild. For roaming t2 doesn’t really have a lot of condition people so I don’t run with any condi removal except my hoelbrak runes. I also swap focus for pistol sometimes as well)
I’ve been playing with your build for two days now, I use Empower Illusions and Far-reaching Manipulations though for 15% more dmg and 1200 blink (solo roamers best friend), travelers runes and pistol. I don’t even use condition removal and I solo roam and defend camps. The dmg output with full bloodlust and around 15 stacks of might is INSANE, everyone instantly goes into defensive mode and freak out and I LOVE IT!
Hey, forgot to thank you for the vid! Great stuff, thanks.
When I made my first mesmer I leveled her up with greatsword + sw/pistol up until level forty and then was told I was doing it wrong and needed a focus. After promptly being handed a focus I reworked my entire playstyle to adapt to the new weapon (which was broken as …. at the time). Then, some time later, the perplexity runes were released and I desperately wanted a build that could utilize them effectively because we all know confusion is a mesmer thing (or at least it should be). But my entire playstyle revolved around gs+sw/x and I could not bring myself to use staff.
So, I made a second mesmer and leveled him up using only staff + sc/torch. There was only one time I swapped one of my weapon sets for gs because I wasn’t killing mobs fast enough in my personal story to keep them from swarming me. All of this was done before the changes to leveling, traits, and personal story, so, keeping those changes in mind. I would honestly say anet has really hobbled the mesmer class here. Mesmer is heavily reliant on the traits it utilizes and without those traits it makes leveling that much harder.
Yes, you can level up purely as a condi, I did it. It was slow and painful, but I managed it. I did not go into EotM, I did a little crafting, and I only used one birthday scroll to get myself to level twenty instantly. I may have used a few tomes, but I don’t remember. In the early days of my second mesmer I was talking to Aeoldyn (Chaos Archangel) and he did say to me, “Why are you doing that? Leveling would be easier with greatsword or sword.” The whole point of my second mesmer was to develop a playstyle for staff, which I detested using.
As to traits, per your weapon choices, I would suggest looking in the Chaos or Inspiration trait lines. However, my first love is and will always be sword on mesmer, so even my second mesmer runs around as staff + sw/x. My best advice is don’t limit yourself on your weapons; yes, find a set you like best, but keep your options open.
This. This is valid for life in general, stick with what you like and do best with but keep you options open.
This is my CI Mesmer build for WvW (note: WvW usually means im in a gank squad with my guild. For roaming t2 doesn’t really have a lot of condition people so I don’t run with any condi removal except my hoelbrak runes. I also swap focus for pistol sometimes as well)
I roam solo and use a very similar build, it probably has been posted in here before. I use travelers, Menders Purity and 3x mantra trait instead, I’ve tried other condition removal skills but MP is so convenient, 1 click 2 actions. Also traited pistol because it’s so often I need to catch runners and those extra meters are really neat.
I usually wait a while with my rotation, throw some mirror blades and pew pew to lure out some dodges and stun breakers, then this rotation, which often doesn’t work all the way but sometimes, I try to attack from stealth and behind so the iDuellist is out of their view.
Pistol stun, iduellist, ileap, blurred frenzy, gs5, gs4, MoD, gs2, gs3.
I run staff/gs zerker gear with some knights pieces and null field, power food and travelers runes. I’ve played a lot of condition builds before but got really bored with them and I’ve played shatter the last months. If I’m not solo I use sword/torch instead of staff.
On topic, when I fight condition builds I try to move around and stealth as much as possible and be really aggressive, you have to force them into defensive play.
Necros are really sensitive to stuns so when I see one I switch my stealth for mantra of distraction and load up the moa too. Thieves can be really sensitive to interrupts too but its quite hard to land them.
But my main tip for fighting condition builds is to be aggressive and evasive.
I fought a condition warrior the other night, we had fun duels and he used some hybrid build with bow that produced a lot of conditions. My tactic then was to pew pew with GS at first, then when he moved in I took of his boons with Arcane Thievery, interrupt with GS#5 move in on top and shatter, then I moved out and kited until ready for next burst.
Thank you! I really appreciate this, trying to learn spvp and take the step out from the training arena.
Edit:
I see you’re really fluent with the forward phase shift, how do you do it? reverse key/PR/reverse? or do you use the mouse? Any tips, I often miss the last reverse for some kitten reason so I run back.. lolIt is exactly as you said, just make sure you do it without a target. Over time it becomes easier to pull off and if you have decent internet it will be flawless.
Thanks both of you! I guess I gotta keep practicing it, lots of practice opportunities in WvW
Internet is very good so I can’t blame that..
Is the goal to press them in order as fast as possible or will I PR in the wrong direction if I press to soon after? What’s the correct rytm?:
A) R-PR-R
B) R—PR—R
C) R—PR-R?
D) “Dude what are you talking about, just practice it.”
You need some jazz.

It’s like if you’re trying to drill a hole through something with nothing but a toothpick; it’ll work if you put enough force behind it, but a drill press would do a better job with less effort.
I see it as an optimal build is like a glove made for five fingers, but many of us got maybe three fingers working, maybe a thumb in the middle of the hand. Some builds can actually make use of that miss placed thumb in a way a five-finger glove can’t even though it’s not optimal.
I made a weird hybrid build that really worked for me, but I sort of gave up on it after discussing it on the forum. After reading this thread I think I’ll maybe go back to it.
Dropping that build did improve my shattering skills, which I started playing after that though.
I love the GS and the scepter and can really make use of the skills naturally, I don’t have to think on how to use them, I just do it. The GS however isn’t very good for condition builds but it does have might, boon ripping and snare and range which is essential for hunting down prey in WvW.
I wish I had five fingers though and using these less optimal builds maybe hurts my skill development. On the other side, using weird non meta builds can be an advantage when opponents have difficulties reading my game play.. so basically, I don’t know what to do.
But! It doesn’t matter, because I love mesmerizing with ALL builds, this forum and the deep analysis you all make on the builds, thank you all build critics.
I play WvW 99% but I’ve started to play more spvp and this is so helpful, I can kill stuff but I’m so lost on the rotations and tactics in general. Thanks a lot.
haha nice. The other day I saw an Asura as Mickey Mouse a mesmer, he looked hilarious.
Was it drazeh by any chance? (Mickeydrazey)[/quote]
Hmm no it was a shorter name and he/she was only lvl16 (spvp)
In wvw/pvp it’s awesome for saving downed allies from being stomped.
One single white-faced psychotic looking for a Batman to duel. Enjoys walks down dark alleys, robbing banks, exploding things at sunset and making people “smile” with his knife. Then again, we can’t use knives so a greatsword will have to do.
