Another option would be to put 1 training spot on each map, with an icon like hte dodge thing. Each one teaching a different mechanic. Then add some minor AP or a minor collection or something to it. That way most players will have an easy reward/reason to hunt it down and at least familiarize themselves with the mechanics.

Naturally many will just rush through, but at least then they have a slight chance at “oh right I remember this from that …. teaching thing… that I ran through. Perhaps I should look that up again?”

It has been suggested multiple times before, pretty much since MegaServer, when we lost the ability to call people in LA etc to come help.

And it would be a great thing to try to create a server community and communications again. And a /server chat is probably one of the most important features to do just that.

A-Net Please enable Gliding in WvW

I’ve kept saying that the thing I miss the most about the glider, is to use it to avoid falling to death. Keep jumping off a cliff and mid air remember “right, no gliding in WvW!” and plummet to my death.

So I believe that the most useful part of it is actually as a parachute. If they added a WXP track that let you enable a parachute in the same way, with very limited side movement, and being able to be shot down to still be plummeting, I think that would solve the biggest “need”.

Not that it is required, mostly just that at this stage a lot of people are so used to activating the glider to stop falling, that it has become second nature. (Heck, I still fall to my death in home instance, because no glider, never learn!)

Outside of that, what OriOri said, as well as what other said about the invisible walls. And I really don’t know what purpose gliding would have if there was invisible walls around every tower/keep anyways?

Another perspective:

What if every other blue/green was instead a drop of 3-5 mats instead ?

Would roughly even out to the same amount of total loot as salvaging it, about same value (or more if you get iron etc). Saves you 6 coppers for a copper-fed-use and no sigil/rune.

More specifically it stacks.

How would people like something like that ? (Not seeing it happening, just pondering alternatives)

You know, back in Guild Wars 1, a lot of people used to take the time to see the cutscenes if they never saw it. In a Story dungeon, many new players simply skip it as soon as they’re able to. Just that should give you an idea.

To be honest, the first personnal story missions that are linked to your race were and still are the best ones. Because you make decisions, and different outcomes are present even if limited because it’s just a MMORPG. Once you leave with your new faction Order of Whispers/Vigils/Priory, the quality of the story or at least my interest in it seems to get lower and lower.
Hell even in the last mission of HoT I just laughed at a poor sylvari who was supposed to be a close character to ours. Meanwhile, I’m still quite sad about Rurik death from Prophecies.

It’s not that the story is bad, but it lacks some “oompf”, everything feels very predictable and cliche.

+1 This said about everything I’d like to add.

The saddest thing about gw2 is the loss of AI. GW2 players would cry if they had to fight against monsters with gw1 AI.

This, the one thing I miss the most from GW1 is the “Charr Warbands”. 4 charrs of random classes thrown together, that fights together. Made for some really fun fights where you had to prioritize which ones to kill first, and how to battle them, what terrain to use etc.

This is something I want to see in GW2, and also why I like the HotM test dummy AI’s, they would make for pretty good AI’s for this purpose. Just have them move together, not walk to far away from each others, and you have 3-4 AI’s that can hit hard, can be somewhat difficult to take down etc. Would love it.

(Yes, agree that replacing every single AI with something like this would be nuts. I’d love it, but it would be nuts)

I mean you can’t do TP business there, when you have to go back and forth between the bank and the TP a lot.

So exactly like old Lion’s Arch, then.

Now destroyed Lion’s Arch, that was convenient to craft and do business in.

Well this.

Personally never really liked old LA, like the new one marginally better but on the whole prefer some of the racial cities instead.

Now, I honestly really liked some of the “Rebuilding LA” maps, they where much more convenient. Still miss the old “Cave” with everything so tightly packed. And would prefer that to either Old/New LA maps.

Had to test, and unfortunately the “Standard Models” doesn’t work in WvW. The Team colors one works, but not the Standard Models, they where listed as working in PvP (unranked, custom, structured etc). Tested it for good measure, and didn’t work.

So there you have it, since it is listed under “Competitive” and doesn’t work in WvW, we have our answer right there

Pity, because that could have solved a few things in the game mode that probably needs it the most (Well, I’ll gladly take it for PVE as well, so I don’t have to look at all those stupid looking toons…)

Also thematic, wvw is gank thieves, they need their ascended condi armors

Better they add an actual GvG Mode separate from either WvW or sPvP. Half the problem is trying to get a game mode that was designed for one thing (large scale battles over structures and territory) to satisfy several other interests at the same time.

Focus!

Well pretty much this. If you want a competitive game mode, you’re going to have to hope ANet actually makes one. WvW isn’t designed for it, and I kind of suspect the reason they didn’t embrace the GvG part, was because it could potentially turn the mode away from the casual pvp mode they had planned for.

Wish they made it clear though, what they envisioned WvW to actually be. And if they want a competitive mode, then make a own GvG modus already.

I don’t understand this, HoD is barely leading in the closest match-up this week, and they are “over-powered” and “over-stacked” ?

Dragonbrand link is also 3 servers. And the SoS link is 2. I don’t really see a problem in this. (Also, looking through the links, the 4 linked to DB and HoD are pretty small servers, honestly can’t see that making a difference).

WvW ultimate solution

Something that struck me when re-reading this. What is the “Competitive Goal” ? I mean, if you just play to get WXP to hit on a chart, and can ignore PPT etc, why would people defend ? What would be their goals and reasons for logging online and take a specific object ?

I mean personally I’m way to casual to care about that, so it didn’t strike me initially when reading through.

Well if going out on a limb, then I can imagine that the guild mission system could be used to extend this, to get more rewards the “harder” objective you take from the enemy, more for a T3 than a T1 etc, more for a Garri than your own t1 bay. But that would probably add too much extra development time to be practical.

And my connection with server mates now, is that they’re the guys I play with, and are at least part of the people I’ll find on my side in WvW. This idea would essentially spread all my server-mates out over 4 tiers and 3 sides. Unless we organize ourselves in guilds etc. Don’t think it is a bad idea, but server is essentially “removed”, same way as in MegaServer for PVE. After all, in this way there wouldn’t be a single reason to recruit players depending on server :p

Then again, I do agree that server is an outdated and faulty mechanic in the first place.

Don’t see the point of having 4 tiers over 3 myself. Might even be enough with 2. I’m again more concerned about the number of maps relative to timezones and number of players.

Another idea around this could be to bind the tiers to the maps. So you have 3 tiers, one for each map. Gold/Ebg for large size. Silver/Alpine for medium size, and Bronze/Desert for small size (example). And just use a variant of EOTM’s system of creating new instances when/if one is full enough that at least 2 sides are reaching the map cap.

Then ANet wouldn’t need to make new maps either. And you wouldn’t need to make some strange mixes of maps for each tier etc. Alternatively open up EBG/EOTM for gold, and mix Alpine/Desert for bronze, and who knows for silver. EBG/ALpine ?

Just a tip, you don’t actually gain XP in WvW/EotM anylonger, so probably don’t need all the boosters, except for whatever increases WXP specifically (the wvw booster, and celebration/birthday I think). It’s just the tomes now.

Personally I start at west (metrica), run through each map to get all HeroPoints, half the WP’s, and whatever else I run across and ignore the rest. The Exploration bonus alone typically means I’m level 80 before I get around to the last few maps, no boosters really needed. It’s dull as heck, but it also nets you all the hero-points that you might want for the Spez afterwards (189 hero points specifically).

My fastest leveling was the Labyrinth in halloween, food+util+guild tonic+xp booster with killstreak+birthday booster = +285% xp iirc, mostly on kills. Leveled from 32 to 80 in a 5-6 hour sitting iirc. (Then decided that the character was probably more fun as an ele than a thief, and deleted it and made it anew!)

Guild Wars 2 Tabletop RPG

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: joneirikb.7506

joneirikb.7506

For systems I’d try to adapt to GW2 if I wanted to:

  • Iron Kingdoms RPG (IKRPG)

It has a steam-punk setting that is slightly different, but shouldn’t be too hard to adapt, for example you already got a few robots to play with the Asura. It also lets you pick/mix 2 classes from the get go, which fits well with GW1 lore, and makes for a good bit of customizability.

But mostly because of the combat. Rewards positioning, makes you fragile with number of HP, lets each character self heal to some extent, Fairly fast combat with plenty of tactical choices. It has a “role” system, but plays it much looser that what most other games does, so feels closer to GW2 in that regard.

  • D&D 5e

Favorite D&D version yet, once they get a couple of books for Eberron you have some steam-punk to base things on. Took most of the good sides from 3x system, and fixed a good bit on the rest. It keeps the tactical actions in combat, while avoiding most of the crazy clutter that 3x devolved into. At least for now.

If making a new system, first of all that is a crazy amount of work! I’d focus on the active combat, and having X number of choices available at any time, but a easy way to change it (like at sleep or something). Keeping that each weapon should be very different from each others etc. This is the core of what GW2 did right and separates itself mechanically from other games.

Now obviously this is going to be pretty darn hard to re-create, since there are so few existing table-top games that does something similar.

Honestly, people remember different things as the most notable from GW1/2, so what is important to some, isn’t for others.

Example, I never could stand the GW1 MtG/Card like system, and wouldn’t be interested in a TT-RPG that recreated that at all. But I absolutely love the combat in GW2 and would be ecstatic to find an TT-RPG that let me change my play-style and combat-tactics by simply changing weapons, instead of the boring +X dmg -Y initiative 1/2hands.

I’d also love to see a system that keeps the low max level of gw1, and rather let you keep customizing your character, instead of just endlessly grinding upward. Others would be bored to death if they stopped leveling (mechnical progression).

Story and setting can be worked into nearly anything with some dedication and time, that is more about how you create and present the adventure than the mechanics. And a couple of the quirky stuff could be added as custom rules on top without interfering too much with the base rule system.

And that we could have more casual clothes for cities etc (really do miss GW1’s option for enable/disable outfits for city/wilderness).

Getting them back as outfits would be an improvement over the potions. Just to let us color them, and not be bound by the 15 min duration.

But ultimately I’ll always miss mixing the pieces. Loved using the hoodie with either the Khaki shorts, standard racial pants for some, or the chef’s pants etc.

I think putting somewhat more burden on a healer is warranted, but I also agree that it shouldn’t be strictly necessary to always run with a dedicated healer (or tank). I get where you’re coming from, but I do think that, generally, there’s too much emphasis placed on individual active defense, and too little on group recovery and support, considering a lot of players like the idea of playing healers, and almost everyone likes the idea of group-level tactics as opposed to strictly individual tactics.

Just a comment on this part (bolded):

What if more classes had abilities, utils, heals etc that also gave something to others ? Example Shouts usually does this. I’ve been playing a shout guardian for many years, and I’ve just automatically learned to position myself before using my utils so others can benefit from them.

Just by making more heal/util/elite’s work in this way would alter and change this. I also remember Revenant having a trait that gives Protection to nearby allies when you use a heal skill etc. If more classes had skills that did this, then more classes could play more group oriented, help each others and with good play strengthen the group play. Without really having to change too much about the current game.

The downside, WvW would be even more Fubar, as stacking and numbers would be even more powerful. In general it would further strengthen the current “win by stacking numbers!” zerging tactic we see through the game. I’m no expert on Dungeons, but I’d expect this would further encourage the stack on this spot and spam all skills that I’ve seen a few times.

Why is the endgame so "unrewarding"?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: joneirikb.7506

joneirikb.7506

It is a game design principle. They (ANet) wants to keep progression after level 80 mostly horizontal and not vertical. All content in the game should be available to everyone at 80 with exotics, that is/was* their goal.

Ascended/Legendary is there more to be something long term to work towards, not meant as an absolute upgrade. After all, Legendaries at launch (before Ascended was added) had Exotic stats.

When you look at how the combat system is actually designed, that makes a whole lot of sense, to not add to big a difference in stats. Playing in PVP/WVW for example makes you realize just how fragile that line of stats can be, and how little is needed to break it.

Anyways, Ascended weapons are really worth it, and a good upgrade in damage. Trinkets you can get for near free anyways. But if I remember the numbers I saw, then Armor is a 2-3% increase only, so not needed.

In any scenario with 3 or more teams it will always result in the stronger ones pilling up on the weakest.

I do tend to agree, but I also believe that a game could be designed around that problem. Which unfortunately GW2 has not. A very ham-handed example would be to say that you didn’t get any Points/wxp/reward xp for fighting against anything but the strongest opponent you got.

So Server A would only get rewards from fighting Server B, and B+C would only gain rewards from fighting Server A.

I don’t like that idea/design, but it would most likely work. Not to mention, once the blobs on stacked servers realize they don’t gain ANY rewards for sitting in the super blob

Think that seeing the full rank will make it too long again. I don’t really care much about the ranks myself (because of so much random quality anyways). But a slight change to just show say Bronze/Silver/Gold etc, and skip all the extra ones.

I would be fine with all maps getting 1 or 2 key waypoints. Like a waypoint near Teq for Sparkfly Fen. Or the relevant dungeon waypoints. Or the ones near stationary guild mission locations.

Good compromise, something I could live with

I believe the “Basic models” option still works in WvW ? So you can enable that, and it would override all the Kodan Tonics anyways ?

I also think the “meta” was tiny asura in all black, so you couldn’t see anything at all anyways.

I personally like most of this, but I can see why some others might not like it.

  • Other than just watching my server name on a leaderboard, what is my connection to my server? How can I meet up with more people from my server to play with ?
  • You’re still planning a set amount of maps, but with a dynamic map-limit? What about when population dies out or peaks? I do realize you’re suggesting basing things on WXP and not PPT but still.
  • How about a guild/group on one team, can they swap to another team in the same “Tier” ? One example being a fight/zerg-busting guild first beating the opposition, then swap sides and beat their former team-mates etc? [Vial-of-Salt]

My own guild would love this to bits, I think it would probably be better called a “dueling guild” than a “roaming guild” these days, since 50% of the time they sit in GH arena and duel each others. With this system, most of the guild would probably split up over 2-3 sides in Bronze and hunt each others down (And taunt each others in guild chat).

Love that this would let me play what I wanted, when I wanted. Great way to get everyone to play together.

I think many would try to just game it, stack one side with a guild, and everyone try to just move over to that side etc. But that is nothing new.

Don’t agree with all the map choices, but looks decent enough. How are you going to deal with situations like: If 90% of the players decides to crash into the Diamond tier during NA prime at reset. And the last 10% split up over the 3 other tiers. You’d end up with 3 bronze effectively. And crazy queues on that single map.

Like the change, and play with it (because I was sick of those long tags).

Has the added benefit of making it a bit harder to spot enemies, which makes life a bit more exciting.

I do think that it would benefit from a few improvements.

  • Would like to see the initials of the Server, so you also have something to click on, and not just the guild tag.
  • Would like to see the dot a bit larger, and somewhat more visible. As is it can be hard to even see the color at times.
  • Color blindness is an issue for some, Perhaps add the color in text ?
  • Alternatively making some slightly more visible icons/logos for either team or server (like the last one).

Any other suggestions for how to improve on this ?

I can’t quite decide if I like this or not, the fact that I don’t gain XP any-longer means that I just don’t care about XP at all. So on one hand it feels a bit silly getting xp that I won’t be “getting”, but on the other-hand it made completely stop caring about doing most events and stuff, so saves me a lot of time, and lets me run for nodes instead. It certainly makes life faster/easier on maps.

Honestly think they could unlink the entire XP thing from masteries, and stick to just Mastery Points for Masteries. And move back to the XP levelig up separately and giving you something else(Heck, I even forgot what we used to get…. we used to get hero points a few years back right?).

Should the monk be reintroduced in the game?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Monk as in the healer class would never make a return, because ANet specifically wanted to avoid a pure healer class in the game. Most of the things that was left got placed in Guardian, which is supposed to replace Monk and add more of a Paladin style to it (Or Cleric style if you’re familiar with D&D etc).

Guardian already got a good bit of the Smite and Protection style abilities from Monk, so there wouldn’t be much left to add other than healing, and a bit of the last one (forgot name, Divine Favor?).

If you want to play a Monk though, closest you get is probably Elementalist with Water traits, and Staff.

Also Revenant sort of stole the Upkeep system (sorta, it’s different but closest thing we got). But it might be interesting to see a Revenant Spez new legend based on an old Monk style, and give us access to some of the old upkeep spells (That is what I miss the most about Monk myself). And despite how much I’d love to see it, I really don’t think a Rev legend Bonder-Monk style would be good for the game :p

Skill/Trait Rework

I’m on the fence, can’t really decide either way. Find good and bad about both the old and the new trait system.

For example, I felt it made much more sense the old way to unlock the first tier of traits, and spread points out and try many different ones. And as you leveled higher and unlocked next tier you could try specializing more etc.

But at the same time, I really like that with the new system I can save up my heropoints and just unlock one entire traitline in one go, and get something to base my build around. Example for Guardian to get Valor unlocked right away to run meditations, makes leveling a whole lot easier.

In this regard, I feel the old system was better for new players, and the new system is better for veterans ?

I’m also undecided on the whole HeroPoint issue, most of my guildies etc are WvW players first and foremost, and they loved that they could just save up tomes from PVP and level to 80, and not need to get hero points to play the character etc, I can see this point.

Similarly if you’ve already got 100% map completion, or several times already. How much fun is it to go around and get all the HP’s ?

But on the other hand, if you unlocked say “half”, and had to do hero points for the rest, at least you could get something running, of setup a build before hand, and then get the rest as you needed. But this would make it even harder for people to get teh Elite Spez, that doesn’t like doing the HP Marathon ?

In a way, I do kind of miss the old system where you had own “Trait Points” separate from the HeroPoints, but don’t really know how they should implement that in the current system ?

So yeah, I can work with the current system, but I do miss a few things from the old every now and then. The one thing I don’t miss is stats linked to trait lines.

If anything, they could rework how the minor traits worked. Assemble all 3 into 1 minor at the start of the trait-line, that could give a clear idea what the trait-line was about. Would make it a bit easier to see at a glance what the trait abilities was as well.

Here is a radical idea. Anet doesn’t want to pony up for more armor sets? So many are tired of outfits because it creates clones and stifles creativity? I saw a suggestion somewhere on this forum about the possibility of Anet creating just individual pieces. How about a shirt? Just a plain shirt- no shoulderpads, highrise or otherwise, no frou-frou or doo-dads, just a plain shirt. I am amazed how many games overlook the basics, even with their players calling for them.

There are some individual (tho pretty ugly) single pieces of armor in the gem store already. Why not add a few basic street clothes?

One big gripe I have, that they added a butt-cape to to the Hall of Monuments medium armor. Why on earth ruin it like that? I much preferred the original and would love to have access to that version.

This used to exist in the game, with old Town Clothes. I really loved that part of it, just not some of the problems with the town clothing mechanics. But yeah, just look around at all the tonics they made out of the old Town Clothes, there was plenty of things that was normal clothes. Miss them.

So far enjoying the map. This map has the best mix of damage, hitpoints, amount of mobs, CC etc I’ve seen in a pve map yet.

Been playing on a Guardian/DH Meditation/trapper, and found that I had enough condi clear, but felt I wanted a little bit more, just to get rid of some of that Chill. But if I add more condi clear, I’ll lose something else. Love that I actually have to make choices in my build.

If ANet keeps this up, I might finally be able to put WvW on the shelf for good

Why are Gemstore skins > Legendary skins?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

joneirikb.7506

There are a couple of responses to the title question that come to mind immediately:

1) gemstore skins are not better than legendaries. For the most part they are as ugly as sin.

2) It is nearly impossible for gem store skins to not be better than legendaries because legendaries are, for the most part, uglier than sin.

Of course the merits of one skin compared to another are subjective so your mileage may very.

+1 Complete Agreement.

I wish we could modify and expand the UI elements, remove and add, reposition etc as we want to, like we could in GW1. Then all you had to do was edit UI, and make the achievement box larger.

Edit: And allow us to disable/hide the entire story box on the top right as well.

@ Danikat.8537

Thank you so much for being a person that realize a ranger isn’t supposed to just be a pet/bow archer character!

@ SouloftheUnicorn.6305

The others explained the weapons pretty well, so not going into detail on that.

In general though melee weapons does deal more damage than ranged, because you have to stand closer, and possibly in more danger. But largely each weapon has its own strengths and weaknesses. Some are good vs multiple enemies, other are good vs 1-2 targets etc.

Now the reason everyone uses Berserker, is well… mostly because the game is very action based, and the better you get at using Active Defenses (blind, aegis, block, invulnerability, dodge, evade, etc), the less need you have for Passive Defenses (Armor/Toughness, Hitpoints/Vitality, Healing Power etc).

Once you learn to use these well enough it is enough to deal with most PVE enemies, and as such, there is little point in investing in other stats than pure damage.

I would however recommend you to try out some other stats while learning the game, and rather slowly shift over as you feel you get more control over your active defenses. Also Berserker stats tends to be the most expensive on the TP because they’re so popular, so nothing wrong with picking a cheaper option while saving up.
