I’ll have to search around for the post with the exact build but try going with the invincible bunker bomb/pistol-shield engi. It’s pretty impossible to lose a 1v1 with the boon uptime, perma regen and healing it has.
Can’t remember his name off the top of my head, need coffee, but there’s an engineer in DC running it. Pretty immortal build in any 1v1 situation vs anyone.
Find it, please. I’m interested.
Yeah I’m one of those duelists. We often try out builds or just 1v1 for the fun of it in the guild, and I’m always sorry to ask people to leave or don’t attack us because we’re dueling. After all, they have every right to be in the server and play the game as it’s meant to be played, and it makes me feel like we’re occupying public space. :\
So yeah, bring in a dueling option plz.
I use the Logitech G300.
It’s nice, it’s cheap, it has 4 extra buttons besides the right/left/mid click.
To be honest I wish I had one of those mouses with a million buttons on it because I’d like to never take my left hand out of wasd, but for now this mouse will do.
Thanks for the replies and sorry for being too vague on my first post.
The main problem I have is that damn shatter build that keeps you stunned/rooted while the Mesmer goes to town. Either I equip 3 stun breakers or I can’t keep avoiding it forever: they just respawn clones too fast while being immune to everything (Distortion or what have you).
Spotting the real guy isn’t too hard, but a Mesmer teleports around and switches places with clones so often that it still takes some time to find the real player, precious time that he can use to recharge his already low cooldowns.
Even if I wanted to AoE down his clones with grenades/bombs, they’re not so squishy as Mesmers make them sound, and it still takes a few seconds to kill a clone. Both clones and the real guy are quite resistant to direct damage, and for some reason they seem to shed off conditions like it was nothing.
So yeah, I’m hitting a wall against Mesmers and I gave up to the point that I just run away when I meet one, or I make sure to always bring a team mate with me.
I don’t know what do you play, so I’ll give my opinion based on PVP.
Engineer can be traited and geared to fill several roles effectively, but don’t expect to do as much damage as a backstab Thief or live forever like a bunker Elementalist. In the current tournament teams, Engineers have been successfully covering the “point holder” role, thanks to the million knockdowns you can use to keep an enemy off your point while waiting for help to arrive. Or you can also go heavy DPS with a rifle and the Static Discharge trait from the Tools traitline to do lots of burst damage while not being as squishy as another glass cannon class (mind you, still squishy, but at least you stand a chance at running away).
In my opinion, Engi is your typical jack of all trades, there’s no role you can be the best at, but it’s rare to catch you unprepared. No particular strength, no particular weakness.
If you’re used to ele you should do fine as engi.
Most of the skill comes from being able to juggle between kits effectively, and you already got plenty of practice by switching attunements on ele.
And no one can tell you which class you should focus on. If you think engi would be a fun addition to your arsenal, then go for it, otherwise don’t.
Thieves I can take, but the 2nd most OP profession in the game is a serious thorn in my side.
Burst, control, condition, nothing seems to work on these confusing mofos.
Tips?
Realistic: I’m expecting a bunch of small, irrelevant nerfs/buffs. Like Thief stealth duration reduced by 0.0001 secs, some cooldowns switched from 30s to 31s and stuff like that.
But of course I’m always hoping they manage to positively surprise me.
ITT: totally unrealistic expectations.
Pong was the only truly balanced game in the gaming history.
I’m just here to say I completely support the idea of removing Thief from the game. Throw Mesmer in the trashcan as well and then we can finally have a balanced, enjoyable, wannabe e-sports game.
I like the downstate mechanic, but I’d be all for making it the same for everyone.
1: attack, 2: single target stun/interrupt, 3: AoE stun/interrupt available after 10 seconds, 4: self heal.
Lots of good info in this thread. Please sticky!
Tbh I never run without the toolkit anymore.
At least from a PVP perspective, Gear Shield alone makes using the toolkit worth it.
The Staff is useful already. A short range AoE attack strong enough to wipe mesmer clones in 2-3 hits, a ranged heal, AoE swiftness, 12 effin’ stacks of AoE might (plus healing) and an impenetrable wall.
Maybe you can argue that the staff does low damage, but you certainly can’t say it isn’t useful. <.<
Well Guardians got an immobilize on scepter (which is also a ranged weapon), an immobilize on the Hammer, and at least 2 skills to teleport onto the enemy, plus another skill to pull an enemy to them.
What more do you want? Srsly.
I feel the same as OP: being a PVP only necromancer makes you feel limited to one build only or one of its many little variants (aka, the Conditiomancer). Sure, you can try other builds, but they always feel like they’re sub-par and that you’re doing nothing that another class couldn’t do better. :/
I play Necro because I have a feeling that we, as in the community, are missing something about this class. There has to be a way to make it freakin’ amazing, something that probably is escaping the grasp of most people in here, and I intend to find out what it is.
So for pve situations would you recommend a Condition/Precision/Power stat priority on gear? Or with the increasing difficulty of fractal runs would a defensive stat be better substituted for power?
It depends if you have traits that benefit from critical hits; if not it’s better to go for another stat than Precision.
Yeah this. If you have effects that trigger when you crit, like the Incendiary Ammo (I think that’s the name) on the explosive trait line or Sigil of Earth on your weapon, then it’s worth investing in precision. Otherwise, don’t make it your top priority when choosing traits/gear.
I’d like to not see this happen because the promise of PVE rewards will attract that kind of PVE player that couldn’t care less about PVPing and is in it just for the rewards. This would inject a dose of ill-minded players into an already decaying PVP community.
Imo PVP and PVE need to stay separated, like if they were 2 totally different games.
Hi guys,
was wondering if any of you streams tournament matches online, or if you know about good players who stream Necro matches on a regular basis.
I’m very interested in this kind of stuff, so feel free to recommend youtube/twitch channels or what have you.
Power does nothing for condition damage, but it will increase the raw damage of every attack that causes conditions (Bombs, Pistol Shots, Grenades, what have you). So, in the end, it will result in more damage done.
You had me dreaming there for a moment, man.
There’s an option in the options panel that prevents you from moving through your target if you’re a melee. See if that helps. :\
Why would i want to turn that off??? they can still walk through me even if i cant walk through them…make sense?
My advice was to turn that on, so you don’t accidentally run through them while attacking even though they can still run through you. If you actually want to be able to run through them as well, then turn it off.
Bodyblocking would be nice but it ain’t gonna happen anytime soon. So for the moment, if you want to stop people from running through you, then position yourself better I guess.
If you want a solution to your problems next time, try to avoid writing like an elementary school kid on acid, so people can understand you properly.

The names you see on the roster are the account names, not the character names. :/
Tournaments will start when there’s enough teams for the tournament. If someone from your roster goes AFK while waiting for the match to start, or disconnets for whatever reason, or is simply trolling, then you’re gonna have to play one man down. Hopefully they’ll add a “report AFK” button someday and the possibility to replace a missing member with another player.
Sign up for a free tournament, you’ll get matched with other people. When there’s enough teams, you’ll get a popup message saying that you can enter the map. You click on “Go Now” and you’ll get teleported there. The match will start 3 minutes after that popup.
Between matches you can go do anything, and when the next match is ready you’ll be able to teleport there and play.
I thought the interface was intuitive enough. :\
Accelerant Packed Turrets is a worthless trait imo, as the explosion is so small that you have to seriously be lucky if you manage to knock someone down.
I could be wrong but I think you miss then point. I would understand that the point of the trait is to damage and knock back those who melee attack turrets, making then pay for it.
Well, I don’t think anyone ever melees the turrets with the purpose of taking them down. Turrets usually explode due to “secondary fire”, like a melee fighter who’s hitting you, accidentally hits them too. They break up, yeah, but the explosion they make is so small that everyone can avoid it even without paying attention.
That is why it’s a worthless trait imo, making someone pay for attacking the turret isn’t worth wasting a trait.

I don’t use Deployable Turrets because I always drop them next to me in melee range anyway. :\
One of the PVP builds I run often uses the Rocket Turret as a mean of control. The build focuses on lots of knockdowns/immobilizes, and dropping and overcharging a Rocket Turret creates an instant knockdown and another one after 4 seconds. Combined with the Ram Head, the rifle Overcharged shot and the Magnet from the Toolkit, people can do nothing but stay down while getting shot.
Let’s not forget that it’s a blast finisher on a low cooldown.
The untraited skill has a 18 sec CD I think, and this lets you use those combo fields fairly often. Example: drop a mine, Big Ol’Bomb and a Fire bomb right after. The Big Ol’Bomb will blast with the fire field, add the mine blast to that and magnetic inversion if you’re using a shield: instant 9 AoE stacks of might. :P
Besides being an extra cheap blast finisher, I don’t see many uses to it because of its small radius.
After 3 pages of posts about thief, it’s even more clear that it’s always the stealth classes who ruin balance in a game.
It’s always been like that till the dawn of MMOs, and I dunno why a game that aims to become an e-sport would even consider the option of adding such a game breaking mechanic.
Just my 2c.
I don’t ever want to see PVE players coming to PVP for the rewards.
PVE and PVP are completely separated and I like it that way, because that means that people who PVP do it because they want to and enjoy it, and not because they have to grind for a reward.
I’m tired of joining an empty server with a friend so we can duel and try out our builds, and after a while a random person joins and ruins everything.
Make an effin’ duel option, either private servers or right click on someone in the mists and Duel.
How hard can it be? ._.
I like the bomb kit. It’s needed if you’re running bunker engineer in tournaments and it’s good in general for any condition build, but really… landing those bombs is nearly impossible for me.
Even if I run around like an headless chicken spamming bombs everywhere, it seems like people can easily get out of their range and avoid damage completely. For some time I even started resorting to the Net Turret to keep people still while I try to bomb them, but that’s only so effective.
How do you use your Bomb Kit? Do you have any advice?
Winning with a PuG happens more often than you could imagine but still… it’s a frustrating experience to get matched with other randoms and just get wtfstomped by an expert group.
If you reeeeeally want to look at the bright side of this, facing organized teams is your real chance to learn pvp. Look what they do, how you die, read the death logs, do some research. You’ll get better in no time.
But in reality, joining solo is more often than not a pain in the rear hole and should be avoided if possible. Join a PVP guild or at least a guild with a bunch of people interested in PVPing, get yourselves some form of voice communication and go at it. It will still be frustrating, but playing with friends eases tha pain a bit. :\
I haven’t tested it myself, but I think that the general consensus is that healing power is usually not worth it, because even tons of healing power will make just a slight difference.
Might as well invest in toughness/vitality if you’re bunkering, that means Soldier’s Amulet (with a Cleric’s Gem if you wanna add a touch of healing) or Shaman’s with Carrion gem if you’re going to do some condition damage while bunkering.
This is based on personal experience and might very well be wrong, so if any expert on the subject of “healing power” wants to chime in, feel free.
You’re on an elixir build for what role exactly?
Are you going to be roaming and do condition damage? In that case use elixir B for a bunch of buffs and swiftness, C if you’re getting targeted by conditions a lot or aren’t running 409, and S to get out of bad situations. For the runes, go undead/nightmare on armor, Sigil of Earth on the 1st pistol and Minor Corruption in the offhand, Rabid or Rampager’s amulet.
Are you going to roam and do direct damage? Then use B, U (for swiftness and a random wall on the ground which you can use to combo with) and S. Sigil of Air on your Rifle, runes of Divinity, or Eagle, or Ogre on your armor. Berserker’s amulet or Knight’s Amulet for a less squishy version.
Are you going to be team support? Then go for Elixir Gun, F and S. You can use the area heal of the elixir gun as a combo field to create Mass Retaliation (which is great in team fights) and you can trigger it with your shield 4 ability. Elixir F to get yourself or your allies up when they’re downed, and you can throw S to give stability or stealth to help stomping enemies. You might want to go either runes of Earth or Dolyak for your armor, Sigil of Water (I think) on your pistol, the stun duration sigil on your shield (forgot the name). Either Soldier’s or Cleric’s amulet.
In any case, Elixir H will be your heal of choice. Throwing it is gonna give your allies a random buff, which is always helpful.
That’s how I’d go with elixir builds and I hope this is the info you wanted to read.
Well, the thing about voice chat is true though.
Even the PuGgiest of the PuGs will benefit from some voice chat. An integrated system would be perfect, but since we don’t have that blessing, might as well download the most used ones (Mumble, Ventrilo, TeamSpeak) and set up a room somewhere for people to join.
God knows how hard this game is with voice chat already, figure without. ._.
Besides the fact that Thieves still destroy people just as much as they did before, if you’re failing at Thief now maybe you should follow the advice every Thief player gives to whoever complains about Thief:
L2P
Imho, what turrets need, or at least what I’d like to see:
- Aiming System, could be a trait or something that makes the turret target your current autoattack target. At the moment, all it takes for turrets to be useless is a pet.
- Lower cooldowns when picked up. Destroyed turrets should have their cooldown set as is, but keeping them repaired and picking them up should be rewarded with a lower cooldown and the possibility to quickly reposition them.
- Better scaling with stats.
One last thing before I go sleep: Mesmers turning people into Tuna gave me a laugh, lol.
I have seen some confusion about how this works. Here is the simple version.
1) Enter tournament.
3) Have a chance at a gem jackpot or either 10, 35, 80, 120, or 1000 gems.
- Chances of winning one of those is 1 in 4 for each person that enters.
- You can only win one of them for each tournament you enter.
1) Point 2 is missing.
2) Do you win those by winning the full tournament? Or can they drop off a chest even if you get 2-8th place?
Maybe Engineer is on the strong side of the game for you, but I’ve played it a lot and I find it very lacking in the damage department.
Going conditions isn’t very rewarding because you don’t have many ways to stack lots of bleeds on someone, and now my Grenadier build for when I’m going glass cannon will be even harder to play. Landing grenades isn’t easy, you know? :\
I understand the cooldown increase on Elixir R, but why nerf Elixir B? And why such insignificant changes to turret, which is the Engineer department that needs the most work?
I’m not QQing, just negatively surprised.
I’m kind of surprised they managed to nerf us Engineers even more.
That was unexpected.
I’ve read your post like 10 times and I still don’t get it.
Your point is…?
To be honest, I don’t think the upcoming patch is gonna bring anything groundbreaking, or at least anything exciting enough to lure people back in.
Personally, my interest is at the lowest point right now. I’m tired of the same maps, same gamemode, the headaches when trying to kill a bunker guardian, the rage when I’m busy holding against 2 people as my Engi and suddenly Mr. 2-2-2-2 comes out of nowhere.
The structure of the current game mode and the meta group dynamics really leave little room for creativity, and that really spoils my fun. It’s either use that build that everyone knows is effective or go home, very disappointing because I like trying out new stuff.
So yeah, if this patch doesn’t bring anything good, I guess I’ll move onto another game until this one does something to catch my interest again.
A debuff like this is needed also to prevent people from switching characters during a match in case other classes or other builds are needed to win.
That’s just lame.
+1
Been complaining about it since release.
I mean, really? How hard is it to put something like a “Don’t show anymore” checkbox on that window?
In an ideal world, I would like to see paid and free tournaments changed to ranked and unranked, both free to join in terms of tickets.
Winning ranked matches would let you advance on the ladder and give the increased rewards paid tournaments give now, and unranked matches would be for casuals, teams trying out new tactics and so on.
A matchmaking system would also be great, but I’m afraid it would fragment the community even more. There’s no problem finding people for free tournaments, but paid tournaments at the moment can have a long waiting time. If we divide those 2 player pools into rank brackets, then I’d assume waiting times will increase for both kinds of players.
Dunno, just thinking.
A map based on verticality: time to start using those “X happens when you take fall damage” traits.
