Do Sigil of Rage, Critical Haste share a cd?

Just wondering if both of these are worth taking, say for a Pistol Whip build. If one procs, does it put Haste on an internal cd preventing the other from proc’ing? Based on using them for the past week or so, this seems to be case, but not certain. Anyone know?

Infiltrator strike is a castrated shadowstep

Not really, in my experience they’re equivalent but different.

Shadowstep vs Infiltrator’s Strike:
Initial Range: 1200 vs 600
Return Range: 1200 vs 1200
Condition Removal: 3 vs 1
Stun Breakers: 2 vs 1
Immobilize Enemy: 0 vs 1
Damage: 0 vs 183
Cooldown: 50s vs 0s (3+2, spammable if necessary)

Personally when I run Sword I appreciate having the spammable, zero-cd mobility IS provides on my weapon bar, allowing me to use it in all sorts of ways, and freeing up a valuable utility slot for something else (usually Blinding Powder, Shadow Refuge, Signet of Shadows).

It’s not quite as powerful, but has its advantages (like AoE immobilize), and that 50s cd is just a tad much. If Shadowstep had a 30s cd it might be a different story.

TP players, Inflation, Rich Ori Node removal

in Suggestions

kurtosis.9526

TP barons, aka people who treat the TP as part of the meta game, from speculating on price movements to cornering particular markets to finding ways of manipulating bid/ask spreads, have a great deal of control over prices in the economy (not unlike real life).

A problem arising from this is that many high-value items, from precursors to T6 mats to Mystic Conduits are constantly being bought up en-masse re-listed either at higher prices, or trickled back into the market at more limited rates. The target market for these action is not the dungeon running, karma-grinding regular players, but rather other wealthy TP barons with hundreds or thousands of gold to spare.

Exacerbating the problem is that ArenaNet keeps nerfing the ways for everyone else to keep up with that price inflation, from implementing DR to removing the Rich Orichalcum Node in the Champion Karka hive, to the general poor drop rates on anything valuable from simply spending your time playing the game, be it sPvP, WvW, dungeons, or regular PvE, rather than the TP meta.

With each of these nerfs it is becoming more and more the case that only way to keep with TP price inflation is to actually shift our play, from the game to the TP meta, which undermines ANet’s stated philosophy ‘that you should be able to get the most powerful rewards simply by playing the game the way you want.’

I would love to hear ArenaNet’s resident economist John Smith’s take on this issue, and whether it is working as intended, or not.

Question about "new" Improvisation

in Thief

Posted by: kurtosis.9526

kurtosis.9526

I’ve been testing it just today[1] and finding it doesn’t work very well.

What seems to be happening is it will refresh the cd on a random type of utility skill, even if you don’t have any of those equipped.

When I have 3x signets in the utility slot, I’ll activate all three, C&D -> Mug -> Backstab, and 90% of the time they’re still on cd. Only once or twice did the signets ever have their cd refreshed.

When I mix a Trick (Haste) and Venom into my utility slots, one gets refreshed on stealing most of the time.

As for the 10% bundle damage, I haven’t tested that directly, but one way is to port to Caer Shadowfain, pick up some Unexploded Mortar Shells nearby and throw them at Risen. I’ve noticed their damage is modified by your stats (they do around 20k when I’m in my full berserker set, only 10-15k in my P/V/T set).

Haven’t observed closely if Improvisation increases it by 10%, but the things you steal that go into your F1 slot are not considered bundles, only environmental weapons you pick up off the ground.

I was just experimenting with Improvisation today and came here to ask about it.

There’s a problem – it does not work when I only have signets equipped and none of the other skills. It does seem to work when I have mix, like signets + venoms or signets + Tricks.

Anyone else get that problem too?

Guilds and servers are ripped apart.

in WvW

Posted by: kurtosis.9526

kurtosis.9526

TC could have have a shot too if they had a few strong guilds join them in my opinion too. They could do some damage with rounded out coverage.

One of the best things about TC is that it’s filled with people with server loyalty and pride in the server, and heart in WvW. Maybe this is b/c it’s the only RP server and as such all the RPers are intensely loyal and that permeates the rest of the server culture, not sure.

But whatever the reason, they’re willing to go out and get curb stomped week after week in the face of superior skill and organization and not get disheartened or transfer:

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/pvp/wuvwuv/T2-NA-Tarnished-Coast-4AM-12PM-CST-Needed/first

But over time that has paid off, they’ve gotten better and better and have attracted other PvPers from other servers who want a more stable server community and WvW experience. And are now contending in T2.

TLDR: Heart, consistency, server loyalty are defining characteristics of TC, and are a recipe for being a consistent contender in WvW.

Matra Build im currently running

I would run the build Chaos Archangel described, but with GS + S/S (I already do run it with 30/30/0/0/10 + Centaur Runes):

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fgAQNAscRl0zyoHRTkGbNJiJFDXvhqA2RqgqV6BvdhyGA;TsAg0CnomxMjYG7MuZkzsIYQwkCA

GS gives you range and a knockback, S/S gives you melee dueling ability. Specifically, S/S gives you a block and invulnerability on short cd’s when traited. You also have Diversion and Distortion availble with Deceptive Evasion and high crit. And even your clones do non-trivial damage with this build, with all its damage boosts.

Healing Skill - Mirror

kurtosis.9526

I was sold on Mirror when I was testing it out one day in Frostgorge Sound, tried to run through that narrow pass on the way from the Claw of Jormag battlefield to Slough of Despond and got attacked by the massive worms.

One blindsided me with a massive boulder that almost one-shot me, so of course I had to heal up immediately as soon as the knockdown effect was over. As I was healing I was hit with another boulder by another nearby worm, but this time the entire boulder got reflected back at the worm and knocked it down instead.

Was hilarious, I escaped, and have stuck with Mirror ever since.

Also, all of this:

I also use Mirror in WvW. One reason is that I run 6 superior runes of the centaur, giving me a min. 12 sec speed boost every 16 sec or so. So I am very mobile in WvW. Other reason, as stated above this post already, it is of great use in WvW for many players use projectile attacks. Sometime I use it solely to reflect an attack, when I see for example a warrior going on his knees and aiming his rifle towards me. I’ll stick them their bullet back in their faces^^

With 20% boon duration food you can get 14.4s of Swiftness on a 16.25s cd. But that is AoE swiftness, so it’s hugely useful for powering small strike groups around the map and letting them save their swiftness utilities for actual combat, dolyak ganking, supply camp flipping, etc.

5 A Trait that adds swiftness to some ability use. For example, Domination XI – Harmonious Mantras – add 5s of Swiftness to Mantra use (both channeling and casting), 5s cd.

I play both a Thief and Mesmer, and use Centaur Runes + Mirror + Boon duration food for my Mesmer.

On the one hand I hate having to sacrifice runes for permaswiftness, but on the other hand I like not having to spend 33% of my utility slots on a passive utility I never use (as with my Thief).

Also, Centaur’s AoE swiftness is really helpful for powering small strike groups around the map in WvW.

My thief is a brilliant, beautiful, fun as hell work of art and I salute ANet for such a fun class. Which is why Disabling Shot sticks out so much when it fails, more frequently than it should.

It seems like 20% of the time I cast it and don’t actually jump back, rather I get stuck in place. I assume there’s some terrain problem involved here, for example when I’m kiting the Champion Abom outside Caer Shadowfain and I used DS when running up the slight incline there, it tends to fail (and if the Abom has tons of frenzy stacks I can’t afford a single mistep or I get pounded).

Anyone notice this, and are there any work arounds besides know every spot of terrain in the game?

I also realized of my three weapons, only my 1h sword has condition damage, so I might be able to get another 90 at best (on my 2h weapon).

Yes. My mesmer almost hit 2000 condition damage.

How did you do this? My mesmer is fully geared in almost all exotic condition damage gear and is only around 1000 (even with 30 Illusions):

armor: 4x temple karma Prec/Tough/Cond* + 2x crafted Rampagers
jewels: 4x Rampagers jewels + Karka trinket and zerker spineguard

I’m using Centaur runes instead of condition runes, but I think that only costs me at most ~200 condition dmg.

I’m gearing up for a similar build, though I expect to go 30/0/0/10/30 w/ full Power/Precision/Condition Dmg stats.

I think Temporal Enchanter only adds a second or two to glamour fields, but what I really want is Confusion, Blind, and other conditions to last longer, even after people have dodged out of the field. Hence max Condition Duration (30 Domination) and Condition Damage (30 Illusions).

There are two traits you can play around with in Domination, only VIII Confusing Enchantments is necessary there. Torch cd reduction, GS cd reduction, +20% Mind Wrack, Vuln on Shatter are all options. All other traits are required.

Going to run two builds, Shatter/Confusion and Glamour/Confusion .

Shatter/Confusion needs Precision for vigor and clones-on-dodge. Glamour/Confusion doesn’t but I don’t think it will be terribly gimped by going heavy on Precision and light on Power, since its focus is Confusion damage. At least I hope not…

If necessary I’ll carry a set of Carrion jewels if I find I need more Power or Vitality for the Glamour/Confusion build.

kurtosis.9526

TLDR – support thief [1], what’s the best Orr temple gear set (mix & match from different temples, or get one full set and 6x Rune bonus from a particular temple)?

I like dungeoning on my thief in a support role [1], primarily using AoE stealth (Blinding Powder, Shadow Refuge, Smoke Screen + Clusterbomb blast finisher) to help in tricky situations, or to combat revive, or break aggro on someone about to die, or to heal while stealthed, etc.

I’ve collected a random, unoptimized set of Orr temple gear [2] from 4 temples, and have enough Karma now to complete one full set (all 6 pieces from same temple, including temples I don’t have any gear from yet).

The question is, do I collect a full set from one temple for the 6x Rune set bonus? Or do I mix and match stats from different temples to focus on a few important stats (say, Power/Toughness/Vitality + Precision/Toughness/Healing)?

And if the former, which Rune set for a PvE support thief?

Server maint/restarts need 1hr notice

kurtosis.9526

We need at least 1hr notice on server restarts and maintenance, not 3m, or even 30m, so we won’t start something like a 1hr booster, banner buff, or other buff, or start some dungeon, only to have them cut off halfway through.

For example, tonight I just got kicked offline due to the Server Maintenance, 30m into a crafting booster. My only crafting booster, which took about two weeks of trying to get from a black lion chest. Really annoying.

I’ve also seen even worse case scenarios, where people get the 3m game restarting notice right before a difficult boss kill.

It’s totally awesome that ANet has designed a system that can do hot updates with effectively no downtime, but at least older’s games scheduled restarts are scheduled, predictable, you can plan around them and not worry about getting interrupted in the middle of something.

Also, re-announce every 10 minutes – 60, 50, 40, 30, 20, 10, 5, 3, 2, 1… so that people just logging on are more likely to get the message more quickly.

Good idea in principle, but in practice there are way too many WvW buffs to add them to the combat buff bar.

Take a look at the WvW screen next time you’re logged in, and then imagine all of those crammed into the buff bar along with your signets/food/pots/temporary combat buffs/etc. That would result in combat information overload.

But there may be another place on the screen to put them, maybe a row across the top or down the right edge or somewhere else visible but not combat-crucial.

Here’s another tip that might seem obvious to some people, but certainly caught me by surprise.

If you’re coming from WoW, you may assume that Blue gear is better than Green gear, because that’s the way it works in WoW.

Wrong. In GW2, it’s the opposite. Green gear is better than Blue gear. Especially important when buying from Heart vendors for Karma, because they usually offer Green and Blue versions of the same gear.

Cheers.

Just remember, GW2 actually does the rainbow color order correctly, something that used to bug me to no end in WoW:

Rainbow: White -> Yellow -> Orange -> Red -> Purple -> Blue -> Black -> (then back around to Grey -> White)

GW2: Grey -> White -> Blue -> Green -> Yellow -> Orange -> Red -> Purple (then back around to Blue, same order as Rainbow but shifted to start at Blue, with greys and whites being the only out-of-order parts)

WoW: Grey -> White -> Green -> Blue -> Purple -> Orange (Huh? Both Green/Blue and Purple/Orange out of order)

The thief and its gameplay - Your feedback [Merged]

in Thief

Posted by: kurtosis.9526

kurtosis.9526

The only recommendation I have is, don’t take recommendations from the forums. You may or may not get an accurate picture of the true state of thieves, and you’re susceptible to having the squeaking wheels skew your opinion of where the problems lie.

Too many people bend the truth, for example complaining about another class without having done the due diligence required to figure out a counter, or complaining while WvW’ing in less than optimal gear, or any number of variables into which you have no insight in this format.

This might be forgiveable if you didn’t already have the perfect laboratory for evaluating class balance – sPvP. The only guaranteed place in the game where all variables except skill and builds are normalized – gear, team size, etc.

Instead of seeking feedback on the forums I suggest you create an advisory group of top sPvP’ers, say the top 20% are invited. Then get spectator mode implemented ASAP, and use that to observe top sPvP matches, and reconcile that empirical/observational evidence against the advisory group’s recommendations.

Make it clear that instead of trying to please everyone, you will instead base class balance around 5v5 or 8v8 sPvP, and the reason is because it is the systematic, scientific environment where you can be sure all variables except skill and build are held constant. And by limiting to the top 20% of sPvP, you hold skill relatively constant as well, allowing unbalanced builds to be more clearly spotlighted than anywhere else in the game.

Easy solution to the Ascended Gear problem #2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

kurtosis.9526

Why did I waste 2 months of my life leveling and getting all the gear if I’m on the same playing field as noobs that just opened an account? I love that this game is about skill, but I don’t think you understand the concept of reward in games, the way the industry has conditioned us to expect(Great video another player linked before that explains: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWtvrPTbQ_c). That’s not how MMOs work. GW2 is a different game but you simply cannot take reward out of this style of game, it is expected. People are leaving the game because ANet tried doing it differently and unfortunately it doesn’t work as-is, people don’t like it, they are conditioned to feel like there’s nothing to do if they can’t get better “stuff”.

Why are you happily accepting your ‘conditioning’? I can’t believe someone would honestly defend that. I’m sure the Communist appartchiks of old would have loved a populace full of such people – easy to psychologically condition, manipulate, and control with Pavlovian conditioning techniques, who accepted that rather fought it, in a Stockholm Syndome-ish kind of way.

Seriously, GW2 was about transcending [that]1, about breaking away from that, about waking the kitten up and realizing that games should just be fun, and have intrinsic rewards. They gave us a fun, interesting, skill-based not-rng-based [combat system]2 deeper than most MMOs, and multiple places to use, learn, and master it, with all kinds of techniques and tactics possible (just read the profession forums), and people are still fixated on gear grind, kitten There is a ton of intrinsic fun to be had in this game, but so many people can’t or won’t see it because of their ‘conditioning’.

Seriously, DO NOT ACCEPT YOUR CONDITIONING. Transcend it, escape it, take control of your own psyche and emotions, do not just be an organic automata easily programmed and ‘farmed’ by other people and companies for cash in return scientifically doled out ‘rewards’ or stimuli.

You’ll thank me later in life.

I can tell you, WvW is about group tactics and large scale armies. Whether you do 10% crit damage or 15% crit damage does not change the outcome of whether you live or die, or whether you get that kill or don’t.

The problem is, the 8-13% stat advantage (not 3%) on Ascended gear will make the difference when hardcore WvW guilds farm it en masse and fully equip both their zergs and their smaller roaming groups with it.

Those of us who don’t have the time to both WvW and farm PvE, or the desire to farm PvE for PvP gear will be at a clear disadvantage in those encounters.

I’ll keep playing for now and watching how this this pans out for WvW, but given what we know so far I’m not hopeful. It would be totally awesome if ANet just took OP’s suggestion and converted WvW to pure sPvP gear (which probably should have been the case from launch anyway).

This is actually a simply brilliant solution, and would solve the whole problem for me, a primarily WvW player.

All I want is pure skill vs skill with no gear differential. If I’m roaming and someone beats me I want to know for certain it was b/c they outplayed me, rather than they had a gear edge. And vice versa. Then you can evaluate and learn from and get better.

I also don’t want to have to grind dungeons to get BIS WvW gear, nor do I want to give up my 6x Runes of the Centaur or 6x Runes of the Air for some boring Infusion gem stats.

Ascended throws a wrench into this whole dynamic, but making WvW use sPvP gear would completely fix it. Ten thumbs up.

I leveled from 60 to 80 with a GS/Staff shatter build, and played it for a while at 80, and have mixed feelings about it.

There are basically two ways to make a GS/Staff Shatter build – (1) get your illusions for shattering from reduced weapon cd’s and utility skills, or (2) from Deceptive Evasion (trait Dueling X, clone-on-dodge):

(Edit: gw2 forums doesn’t like these link formats, have to manually copy and paste. gw2skills.net down for atm, intothemists is next best, will replace later if I can)

1. http://www.intothemists.com/calc/?build=-Ng-Z;1kUVz0z6cVF71;9;4J-J-T09;229;256Ax

Pros:
- Low weapon cd’s for both GS and Staff, which is particularly nice with Staff’s defensive abilities (Chaos Armor + Protection, Chaos Armor combo, Chaos Field).
- Spawn illusions at 1200 range with GS
- You get really good burst protection proc every 30s from the two Chaos minor traits

Cons:
- You have to use up utility slots on clone spawning skills, limiting your loadout choices and making it more difficult to slot condition removal, shatter cd reset, blink, etc.
- You have to switch weapons when you need illusions to shatter, rather than just when you need a particular weapon skill
- GS prefers Power/Prec/Crit Dmg stats, Staff prefers Condition Dmg. Shatter is the tie-breaker since it favors direct damage (but Cond Dmg is useful too since it increases Confusion dmg and all your Shatters apply Confusion). TLDR – there’s a stat conflict between the two weapons, they are not complemetary.

2. http://www.intothemists.com/calc/?build=-Ng-Z;1kUk4197kWF71;9;49J;0T0;009;556AC

Pros:
- Easy clone spawning via dodges, more dodges via Vigor on Crit (Dueling 5pt minor trait)
- Since you get enough illusions for shattering from dodge + weapon skills, you don’t need illusion utility skills, can slot anything in your Utility skill slots. Lots of good options here – Feedback, Null Field, Mantra of Resolve, Blink, Signet of Illusions, Portal, etc.
- More clear definition of weapon roles: Greatsword for ranged offense, Staff + dodge + shatter for close quarters defense + offense. You don’t need to switch weapons to create clones, but rather based only on what is most appropriate to the combat situation.

Cons:
- Impossible to get all weapon cd reducing traits. You can get GS cd reducing traits and +20% Mind Wrack damage from 20 in Domination, but give up reduced cd’s on Staff, which may be painful (is to me since I rely more staff and find it more versatile and a better weapon overall)
- You also give up burst defense proc from the Chaos minor traits
- Generally more of a glass cannon oriented spec overall, but Staff is not a glass cannon weapon. It’s a defensive, attrition-based weapon. Osicat makes it work for his glass cannon Sword/Pistol + Staff wvw spec though.

I’ve generally come to prefer the Deceptive Evasion (clone-on-dodge) style builds, but I really miss 20ps in Chaos. But there’s just no way to get them unless you give up +20% damage to Mind Wrack, which is equally painful to give up.

At some point I’m going to get around to testing a Mesmer Necro-style build, based on Confusion stacking + Condition Damage. Clone-on-Dodge, Vigor on Crit, extended Confusion duration, that doesn’t rely on direct damage from Mind Wrack:

But haven’t done that yet, no idea how well it will work.

Read part 2 of the Comprehensive Memser guide:

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/mesmer/Guide-The-Comprehensive-Mesmer-Guide-all-Parts

That’s what fixed leveling for me.

TLDR: Crippling Dissipation applies cripple when clone dies. Staff + Illusionary Elasticity (extra bounce on Staff 1) to quickly stack boons and conditions. Kite crippled mobs around in circles till they die, repeat, profit.

There are better builds at 80 with full exotic 80 gear set, but this works a charm while leveling, lets you solo most pre-80 champions. For example, the ~50 something champion Spider Queen in northern Fireheart Rise – I kited this thing to the nearby fort, then cripple kited it around inside the fort for ~20m until finally downing it. No other class in the game could solo that thing.

So........mesmer pve complains....do they really only apply to Orr farming?

Only limitation of Mesmers outside of Orr farming in PvE is the lack of a passive run speed signet which is very very important to some people.

Exactly this. Mesmer is strong everywhere except these two places:

1. Our AoE tagging abilities have a little ramp up time, but when farming Orr DE’s it’s usually too late to reliably tag mobs.

2. No passive run speed buff, only way to get is use 6x Runes of the Centaur (10s Swiftness when using a healing skill) + short cd Mirror or Mantra healing skill.

Besides that mesmers are strong at everything else. They’re the best class in the game for solo’ing champion mobs, and one of the strongest in pvp.

Can’t have it all I guess.

looking for a viable spec at wvw for mesmers...

Sword/Dagger Shadow Arts thief is really fun:

Teleport with Sword 2, Stealth with Dagger 5, Heal when stealthed. If you like confusing and tricking other players (or mobs) on your mesmer, this is a good alt choice.
