How do you get to 80 without getting bored?

Just as the title says,I’ve had HoT for a year,and I still couldn’t crack the level 40 barrier.I either find myself really bored,running around and doing hearts and quicktime events,either I get dead bored of my class and switch to another,and so on.The thing is,I really like GW2,I’d love to get to the endgame,but I can’t pull myself through the grind.

What should I do?

Seriously, kitten hearts, the most tedious thing in the game. Unbelievably ANet introduced !#*!# Daily Hearts in Living Story 3 but that’s a matter for a different post.

More seriously, all you have to do to level to 80 is:

1. Run around and collect every Waypoint and Hero Point on each map, ignore everything else. (though feel free to participate in Dynamic Events as you happen upon them, but only if they seem fun)
2. Do the Personal Story until it’s too high level for you, then do #1 until you level enough to continue the Personal Story.
3. Do every Story Dungeon as you reach the level for it (you’ll get a mail telling which dungeon when it unlocks for you).

That’s it. You’ll be 80 in no time with the least possible pain unless you use Tomes of Knowledge or a Level 80 Booster.

ArenaNet can still make this some of most fun, entertaining, and enjoyable RvR looking forward into the future. It’s easy to give up hope. I’ve felt like giving up and have even stated so many times myself. The potential is still there. I would love to rank GW2 far above the rest.

This is what I was wondering and why I asked this question. Wasn’t sure, but it seems GW2 could still be in the running as one of the best RvR games. ANet spent the past year getting a bunch of needed systems into WvW which was a good call, but now that’s all done, it will be interesting to see how they evolve it.

Adding gliding and territories was an innovative first step, but also kind of obvious to build on systems already in other parts of the game. I hope they’ll now take the opportunity to survey the loyal WvW veteran player base like they did a year ago and collectively figure out the next steps in evolving it.

Sylvari are already camoflauged like real snipers, and they have the Pale Reaver snipers too. Sylvari are all about being snipers.

It’s not really the new Reaper unless it gets a second health bar like Reaper’s Life Force. Without that it will have a very different feel and playstyle.

1. You don’t have to buy the expansion but it helps. Most classes are far stronger with their HoT Elite spec than without it, but a few are still roughly as good without their Elite. However, they all benefit a great deal from the new gear stats HoT introduced, regardless they run with their Elite spec or not.

5. TC was Tier 1-2 server for a long time, but a few months ago a lot of its WvW guilds transferred to JQ. There’s still WvW on TC but not the big T1 round-the-clock battling there used to be. When GW2 first launched, WvW was commonly considered one of the best RvR implementations at the time. It’s had struggles since, but with the additions and updates of the past year, how does the WvW community think it stacks up against all other current options (current only, not in-development stuff like Camelot Unchained, etc)?

How do you stack rank all current RvR options? Eg:

1. GW2 WvW
2. Elder Scrolls Online
3. [RvR game #3]
4. [RvR game #4]
5. etc

Gearing up a Chrono is expensive, no way around it. You either need expensive boon duration gear for spamming AoE Quickness and Alacrity, or expensive healing + boon duration gear for spamming AoE Quickness, Alacrity and Regeneration/Healing, or expensive Viper gear for condi DPS builds.

However, there’s a big balance patch happening this Tuesday which will change some things critical to Chrono, namely boon duration, so wait till after the meta resettles to decide what to focus on. Keep an eye on [qT]’s website to see how/if the optimal builds change: http://qtfy.eu/build/mesmer.

That said, all that stuff is mainly for PvE end game raiding and T4 Fractals. If you just want something good enough to explore open world HoT and PoF, then start with a set of Berserker or Assassin’s gear with Scholar Runes, Force/Air Sigils, and Sword/Focus. That’s a useful basic gear set to start with before getting into farming the more specialized and expensive stuff.

What’s your thinking on Holo kit engi now? It still seems a little janky, with kits being locked out for 6s after using Holo mode, and kits not building up heat, among other things. Does the extra Burning and damage from Holo skills outweigh the ~2500 dps from Tools?

I personally like Condi at 80 in PvE, it’s just fun melting everything with chemical warfare. AoE Blind & Chill also do good suppression of incoming damage. My other two most played classes are Tempest and Reaper, so I seem to gravitate toward strong AoE classes.

What I’m pretty sure A-net are gonna do with this xpac. Is give a HUGE revamp to all existing skills and mechanics for all the classes. So I don’t thjink we are gonna lose our current F5 skills, they might just be changed.

Agree with Chaba, take your time and level your Engi up the normal way. Maybe use a Level 20 birthday boost if you have one, but Engi is worth learning the first time bit-by-bit.

You’ll also need a ton of Hero Points to unlock two Elite Specs, so just level by getting every Waypoint and HP in every map. That will get you to 80 without having to bother with tedious Hearts.

I’m neutral so far. I just love the current P/P/FT/Nade/Bomb/Mortar Viper Condi meta playstyle and am hoping Holosmith can integrate well with it as a viable replacement for Tools in the current Explosions/Firearms/Tools build.

So far that looks like a maybe. Holosmith definitely has more damaging Condi’s than Tools, but Tools gives you ~2500 DPS that Holo will have to compensate for (Static Discharge (300 DPS), Streamlined Kits (1000 DPS), Excessive Energy (600 DPS), Kinetic Battery (600 DPS)).

A few questions:

1. Can you build up Heat with all skills (like kits and P/P skills?) or just Holo Skills and Utilities? If the latter that may limit viable builds, rotations, and playstyle a great deal.

2. Holo overrides F5 no matter what you choose for your corresponding Elite Skill. Will Orbital Strike or other Elites’ F5 skills be missed? And why does Holo have to override F5 when it could simply have used Weapon Swap instead?

3. Sword has a 3-part auto attack chain, with the third auto causing an explosion. I’m assuming that will trigger Shrapnel (AoE Bleed). It also reduces the cooldown of Sword #2 by 3s, which also applies Bleed, meaning Sword #2 should be useable after every two autoattack chains. Looks like an autoattack-based Condi rotation, wonder how/if that can be integrated into the current non-autoattack-based Condi rotation.

how often do you pistol auto? really shouldnt be autoing at all as a condi engi, and if you do happen to on sword itll only be once and then 2 will be off cd to spit out another 3/5 bleeds and mesh better with kit priorities

i think itll be the dps option, mortar is almost worthless for dps but this elite should have like twice the priority rating of ft4 and probably(?) a much more generous dimension… that alone is nothing to laugh at. then theres the random burning from traits too, free dps with no cast time.

I never pistol auto, always cycling through kits/weapon skills that do damaging conditions, and suppression as needed. But not following you, I didn’t say anything about pistol auto, where does that come in?

But good observation about Sword #2, looks like it will recharge after two autoattack chains (assuming 1.75s auto chain duration and 3s cd reduction per auto chain, which is what I think the blurry tooltips say). Also, the third strike in the Sword auto chain does an AoE explosion that may trigger Shrapnel (Bleeding). If so that’s going to require a very precise rotation to make sure you don’t miss a third strike while slotting Sword #2 in as frequently as possible.

Regarding Burning traits, I wonder which will be the meta in Grand Master, Vent Exhaust (AoE Burning on dodge) or Photonic Blasting Module (Overheating now blasts its direct damage to nearby foes and no longer at the player).

If they’re going to replace our toolbelt skills then I’m hoping that holo mode will be toggled by weapon swap. You’d loose a fair chunk of engi utility (not to mention a main heal from med kit) by replacing it by default.

Unforunately it looks like Holo mode is activated by F5, which seems to require slotting the Holo Elite Skill in place of Mortar Kit/Supply Crate etc. But you’re absolutely correct, it should be triggered by Weapon Swap instead, no reason not to. I wonder what ANet was thinking with that.

Yep a combination of Power and Condition skills which will be useful for players who have Viper Gear.

I don’t know, Holosmith + Condi is looking a little janky. Holosmith’s traits have some support for Condi in the Adept and Grand Master lines, but Sword only does a little bit of bleeding on Skill #2 and that’s it, and only one Photon Forge Mode weapon skill applies a damaging condition (#4 on 10s cd). And only one Utility/Toolbelt skill – Laser Disk/Blade Burst – applies Condi (some decent Bleed stacks it appears, but on a 30s cd). The new Elite applies Burning but on a 60s cd.

I was hoping the Holosmith spec could replace Tools in the current Explosions/Firearms/Tools P/P + Full Kit Viper Condi meta build while keeping the weapon + full kit loadout. But unfortunately it looks like to spec Holosmith you have to trade Mortar Kit for the Holosmith Elite Skill, since that Elite skill changes your F5 to activate/deactivate Photon Forge mode.

So the way I’m reading it is you basically have to trade Tools Spec + Mortar Kit for Holosmith Spec (and additional sources of Burning from its traits) + Photon Forge Mode (basically a kit but with only one damaging condition skill) + Holosmith Elite Skill. Hard to tell just from eyeballing it if that’s a good trade for a Condi build.

Explosions/Firearms/Holosmith might be able to become the new Condi Engi meta due mainly the Adept and Grand Master burning traits, but it’s not clear yet and looks kind of janky so far.

Condi Engi is easy mode in the jungle, only Reaper and BearBow are easier (and BearBow is less effective than either, just safer).

Run as close to the Viper Condi meta build as you can (http://qtfy.eu/build/engineer#condi_engie) and spam Blind + Chill + all damaging condi’s on enemies and watch them melt. At least one skill per Kit/weapon set can AoE Blind, just cycle through kits/weapons Blinding/Chilling mobs till dead. Not even the terrible Pocket Raptors are a threat and are quickly dispatched with Smoke Bomb + Grenade Barage. Use Big ’Ol Bomb + Orbital Strike + Flamethrower #3 to break most breakbars (including some weaker Champions).

Marvel and Exalt in your ludicrous OP-ness and absolute dominance over the minions of Mordremoth, as you prepare to bring your wake of earth-scorching, flesh-melting, WMD and total chemical warfare to the unsuspecting and unprepared armies of Palawa Joko and Balthazar.

(Seriously, that build is amazing, third highest dps in the game after Tempest and Thief (http://qtfy.eu/benchmarks/), and will continue to be amazing in the new expansion. And, it’s all vanilla GW2 stuff except for the Viper gear and Runes/Sigils – no Elite specs or Hammer or anything).

How long do we still have to wait? I can’t even play anymore.. Every time I open the client, it either freezes or completely restarts my Mac.

It won’t even start anymore on my Mac (late 2013 MBPr 15" with El Capitan). Tried deleting Guild Wars 2.app from /Applications and reinstalling but same problem, just won’t start. Completely unplayable now :/

Pretty sure the problem is with fPermittedFrontApps, SecurityAgent, and SetFrontApplication. It just sounds like something is causing SecurityAgent to prevent the app from fully loading. Trying to dig around the internet and understand how SecurityAgent works.

Asura or Sylvari or does it matter?

Hi all, been playing since beta, five 80s. I have two 26 engineers I’ve been using to farm Silver Doubloons at the LA jp, and have decided to get one to 80.

One’s Asura, the other’s Sylvari, and I can’t decide which. Anyone have any preferences? Are the racial skills of either ever useful? A few notes:

1. 3 of my 80’s are Asura, other two are Norn and Human, so would be nice to have something different.

2. I like Asura for JP’s, and imagine an Asura rifle engi would be a good combination for that.

3. I PvE and WvW. I initially chose Asura b/c it was slightly harder to see their animations in combat, but I believe with optional character model normalization now that’s no longer an advantage of Asura.

4. I have Asura T2 medium sitting in the bank waiting for a level 80 Asura who can use it (my other three Asura 80s are heavy & light). However, if I ever get a ranger to 80 it will be an Asura and will be able to use it.

5. I intend to play and gear this character 100% Rabid/WvW Roaming, with two rune sets – Perpelexity/Confusion stacking, and Aristrocracy/Might Stacking, both Rabid. Are either Asura or Sylvari racial abilities ever useful with either?

Any thoughts, or does it not matter at all?

5 Interrupts – GS #5, Sw #4.2 (double-tap), MoD x3. Each has reduced cd, does damage, and applies 10s cd to interrupted skill/s. Good condition removal too, although you can replace those traits/skills with something else if desired.

That said, you’re right, the game doesn’t really reward interrupts enough to make it worth it, and also interrupt skills can’t really have cast times or travel times (like GS #5 or Sw #4.2).

Regarding Deceptive Evasion: first thanks for listening to the feedback, that would have ruined one of the more interesting builds, decreasing build diversity.

Suggestion: Look into making Deceptive Evasion overwrite clones only but not phantasms. That would make a lot of players happy. It’s good to be able to overwrite clones sometimes, but most of the time you prefer not to overwrite Phantasms too. Currently there’s no way to control which gets overwritten.

I wanted the tiniest possible character model for both my guardian and warrior, so made both female Asura with the smallest bodies, heads, and ears possible. They turned out great, hard to see coming in the thick of battle (especially Guardian Banish and Warrior Stomp), love my little zipping zooming pinballs of death. Pics

How about a compromise – change Clone-on-dodge to only overwrite clones but not phantasms.

Annoying on the one hand, but convenient on the other. They’ve nerfed both PU clone death and Shatter, so I no longer have to maintain multiple gear sets for all these builds. Just two now – PU Phantasm with Travelers for WvW and Phantasm with Orbs for PvE. The cloud has a silver lining at least.

What I wrote at the top of my leveling guide has been fairly effective at catching attention enough for people to read through the guide and get excited about the class:

_There are only two known ways in the universe to level a mesmer without wanting to hang yourself by your toenails by level 10.

They’re squishy at low levels moreso than most classes, don’t kill as fast or feel as visceral (as, say, thieves or warriors) and hence harder to level, don’t outgrow that till around 50-60, and don’t actually get good till you’re geared up in Exotics at 80.

But at 80 they’re truly magical, and one of the most fun and desired classes in the game (dungeons, FotM, sPvP, WvW), and well worth it if you can stick it out. This is how to stick it out._

Since clones don’t have our offhand they’re a dead giveaway when we’re dual wielding, but some offhand weapons are harder to see than others, which may take less observant enemies slightly longer to pick out the real mesmer from the clones.

What are the most hidden, hard-to-see offhand Mesmer weapons?

Halt/Eliminate:

  • Stat Progression
  • Level cap progression

Reallocate toward:

  • Character capability expansion
  • Account capability expansion
  • Player skill expansion

1. Character capability expansion in the form of new skills, abilities, and traits. This is the epitome of horizontal progression – expanding your character’s capabilities without increasing their stat power or level cap.

ANet has created one of the best, most fun, and interesting combat and talent build systems in the industry. Double down on that. Give us more of it. Stat progression is boring by comparison. I know the balancing may be more difficult, so just add these things gradually, like the healing skills. One new addition every ~3 or ~4 months would be fine.

Also, ideally, make them rewards for accomplishing something in the game – Living Story Meta achievements, a certain Fractal/PvP/WvW rank, quest series, etc. – rather than just for skill points or gold. That’s a richer and more rewarding experience.

2. Character meta expansion. Another good example of horizontal character progression would be achieving more convenience and flexibility. Expanding bank & bag tabs, deepening slot caps from 250 to 1000, etc.

Another thing that could be done is, make Ascended gear as or more difficult to obtain than it currently is, but give it the ability to swap stats like Legendaries. Legendaries get aesthetics and stat swapping, Ascended only gets stat swapping. As is, the mere idea of gearing up my 4 80s with multiple sets of Ascended is so exhausting I can barely even contemplate it, but if each only took one set whose stats could be swapped at will out of combat, that increased convenience would be more than worth working for. Of course, you’d have to figure out what to do Rune/Sigil/etc slots in such a system but I’m sure you could figure that out.

3. Player Skill Development. Simply, less frequent but more challenging content updates. Reduce frequency to one per month, and make them difficult, like Tequatl, the Molten dungeon, or Aetherpath dungeon. Some of the LS updates have added great new challenges, others have been just an unchallenging achievement grind.

Also add a “Solo” category to the achievement system for people who do things like Solo Lupi, Mossman, Archidiviner, or open world champions like Champion Risen Abomination, Khol Skullcrusher, etc. Other than insanely fast speed kills/speed runs that’s some of the most interesting and challenging stuff in the game, and people do it for exactly that reason – they don’t even get a title or gear reward or Achievement for it. If you must provide a reward, provide titles only as the reward, no need for any kind of item there.

4. Skill Gating, not Gear Gating. FotM has the right idea – same dungeon with multiple levels of increasing difficulty and challenge, however not the right implementation. Agony is a form a gear gating, but what we really want is skill gating. For example, the Uncategorized harpies start off simple and gain knockback at level 10. That is proto-brilliant dungeon design, and would have been straight brilliant had all of FotM had been implemented like that – no increasing Agony levels, but instead increasingly difficult dungeon mechanics. That’s more work for the dev team than adding mere Agony damage, but the result is a much more interesting experience based on skill gating rather than gear gating.

The key idea is expansion, not progression of game assets, but achieves player progression as a nice side effect. Expansion of capability and convenience, at the character level, account level, and even player level both requires and confers player skill progression. This achieves the same level of player investment in the game (via their built-up account), but without the burnout associated with endless gear stat treadmill grinds. Every addition to your character/account/personal skill/accomplishment repertoire is energizing – it refreshes and reinvigorates the game – rather than draining and burnout-inducing.

Proposed solo Guardian build for Orr - Help!

I’ve been loving solo’ing PvE on my Guardian with the Meditations traits and full Zerker/Scholar gear. By “solo’ing PvE”, I mean solo’ing Orr Champions, like the Champion Risen Gladiator near Caer Shadowfain, Champion Risen Giant in Straits, Champion Ornithologist in Malchor’s Leap (gotta have those Experimental Rifles), etc.

The self-healing from traited Meditations is very strong, they’re the only way for Guardians to get Fury besides Tome of Wrath, they provide excellent condition cleanse, and mobility with Judge’s Intervention. Damage avoidance comes from Blinds on Sword and Greatsword, Aegis, and increasing dodging thanks to Vigorous Precision – basically the same playstyle as the high-level Fractal meta, but more solo-oriented, less group support.

My advice is to get as much high-level Zerker gear as possible and give that a shot. You can get a full set of Exotic Zerker Armor by doing CoF P1 + P2 daily for 10-11 days, plus a few more days for Greatsword, Sword, and Focus. And you’ll have enough gold at the end of that to buy Scholar Runes, and you’ll be set. Not a terrible grind.

Build for pure solo play looks like this. If you’re mixing in group stuff and need reflections, this (and just swap a Meditation for Wall of Reflection). It’s not the “meta”, but it’s the most fun I’ve had on my guardian in a while, especially with all the teleports.

TP and Gem Store not loading

I’ve had this problem since launch, though intermittently. The TP works fine about 50% of the time, the other 50% I get what you’re getting. Nothing reliably solves it – updating root certs, deleting local.dat, gw2.exe -repair, etc. If you search these forums you can other threads about it, but don’t hold your breath for a solution. There’s just some ghost in the machine b/t gw2 and your computer.

Does "Combined Training" apply to DB bleeds?

I love DB, is a evade, 3 long bleeds, With a good condition build using DB and p/d roll of inti, shadow step you can solo lupi with no problems.

Its a play style most dont like to use b.c is it a little clunky.

My Condition build I use is based off it, 1800 condition, 20k hp 3k tough (Im in full ascended dire) with the right traits you can do 10-11 DB back to back with 15sec bleeds. Add that with signet of malice all pve content is to easy.

I’ve been gearing up my thief recently for exactly this. What traits let you do 10-11 DB back to back?

How does DB work with Perplexity Runes? There’s no interupt with D/D…
