In dungeons, as an ele you dont want “too much” toughness. It brings aggro to you.
I’m testing a full valk/zerker set with scepter/focus and the results are great.
But you need to change the build a bit…

Hi there LightningBlaze, I fought you quite a few times this weekend. Really insane burst you got. About 13-15k instant dmg on my 2500 armor…

For those that don’t know, its not a GC or “zerker” build…
I didnt see his armor, but I’d say its mostly valk/cavalier… maybe some knights. He still have good hp/armor, and above that, mobility.

What it happens is the stacking hits when going from earth to air.
Keeps distance, earth 2-1-3, blinding flash into melee distance, air att, air 1-2-3, arcane blast.
If things go bad, RTL away, FGS, run…

Not only the burst is mostly instant but any option to “see the animations” is made quite difficult for being asura.

The trait set-up I’d guess its a 0/20/0/30/20 or some variant.

Nice burst man… I’ve been out of the ele a long time, but it made me want to step-up my game.

Send me a msg in-game, would like to hear more about the build with the “possible changes”.

A friend is downed, the opponent is loading the spike.
Go for the ress, stealth you and your friend. Opponent miss the spike, you BS the opponent.

There is a difference. Its just not imposed and impossible to overcome.

A light or medium armor user can achieve 3k armor, but not as easy as a heavy armor user.

And “tanking” in this game (in a sense of surviving dmg) is not only about the armor rating. Its about boons and other defense skills also.

I’ve seen front lines melt down sharing venoms.

I would need to see it to believe.
But no way you are going to convince me that giving 5 people close to you the ability to put some poison/weakness/chill on a few targets is going to melt a zerg down.
Can it help, sure. But I think the statement is way out of proportion here.

Actually, he got a point on this one.

IS, IA and SS are working terribly now.
I cant use Inf Arrow on the side of a simple ramp/stair as it used to be. And this was the best use for it, as in a straight line is faster (and more ini efficient) to just HS or run.

You don’t need to have 30/30/30/30/30 to have the best of all traits.
30 in critical strike is more than enough to have good damage.
15 on Acrobatics are more than enough to have almost endless dodges.
15 in Shadow Arts are enough to have longer stealth times and condition cleansing on stealth.
Still, you have 10 traitpoints left to spend where you want to.
As you can see, you’re able to have the best of the thief defensive capabilities with 70 traitpoints.

You have access to two weapon sets. If you want the damage of BS and endless stunbreaker, take them both as weapon sets. Obviously you’re renouncing the shortbow, but you have to renounce something for both endless stunbreakers and high burst capabilities. Anyway, S/D does deal good damage, don’t make it look it isn’t true.

Having Withdraw doesn’t necessarily mean you have no condition cleansing.
Don’t forget that IS, Shadowstep and Shadow’s Embrace are still there offering condition removals.

As for CnD, I think it doesn’t require to much skills to land your CnD then get away of the place you stealthed. As for D/P, as you said, you can stealth out of melee range if it is a problem.

There is no way a thief can survive fights in wvw without 30 in shadow arts. Yes, you can go full GC and get some unaware lonely wanderer, but you won’t be able to keep yourself in a fight that last longer than 10s (against minimum decent opponents) without the health regen in stealth. You dont have enough HP to stay in combat.

I tried 0/15/30/25/0 (s/d//d/p), and while it has great survivability it lacks dmg burst to get people down. And in bigger fights you cant do much without a shortbow. Its a great build to just survive untill your opponent gets bored or help arrive. I’ve fought good d/d eles and bunker engies/guards for more than 20min with this.

IS and SE are not really reliable as cond. cleanse. They work great, but if you get unloaded by a cond ranger, engi or necro you cant afford to stealth for the next 30s to remove it all, or spam IS untill you use all your ini. HiS is the best cond cleanse thiefs get, besides runes of Lyssa. The biggest threat to a thief is dmg conditions as we have really low HP, when you have all that bleed/poison/burn ticking you need to get it all out ASAP and not one by one over the next 10-20s at the cost of your ini and/or escape utility.

And hiting a CnD requires as much skill as it takes to dodge/block it. Even more when you are in a lagfest with the zerg nearby…

And not to mention, if you change swap your weapon from s/x to d/x in combat to get a burst out, you are out of your stun breaker for the next 10s and might have to set it again when you get back to s/x.

How many times do we have to do this discussion again? This is false, false, false, false.
They have the best access to stunbreakers in this game.

All they have is stealth, and they can still be hit easily while in stealth.

False.
They have also insane dodging capability (15 points in Acrobatics, Withdraw and Vigorous Recovery).
Also, it is false that they can be hit easily while in stealth. A thief who doesn’t want to be hit while stealthed, doesn’t get hit. You make avoiding blind swings and random AoE looks hard.

This is like saying that a warrior can have the best burst with axe while keeping the best mobility with GS//Sw/wh and still have shield stance and endure pain, while ignoring conditions from traits and food/runes.

A thief that goes 15 in acrobatics will have lower burst due to not having the 30pts on CS or lower survivability for the lack of 30 in SA.
If a thief has sword MH for the “endless” stunbreaker it won’t have dps from dagger main hand (and BS).
Using withdrawn on WvW makes you very vulnerable to conditions as HiS is the only (dmg)cond. removal most x/d builds use. Also, you loose one more source of stealth.
And yes, avoiding swings is hard when you need to be in melee range to get your BS or CnD off. Thats the real advantage of d/p, stealth away of melee range.

But no. there is no 30/30/30/30/30 build with s/d//d/d//p/d//sb having endless dodges, stunbreakers, stealth and 10k bs crit with mug + CnD and tons of hp/armor…

What is shared by Venom Share?

Nothing is shared because the radius of the skill is beyond kitten poor, ever taking that trait is just downright dumb. The only situation I can conceive were it would be viable is if GW2 had PvE content that was hard and required tactics beyond using your heal if you get low hp and rolling your face on the keyboard so you do some damage here and there to bosses. Venoms suck ontop of all that anyways, and since PvE is so easy the only thing that matters is how fast can you run it, overall group dps would benefit more from you going a zerker build to do the most dmg possible. The only reason to not go full zerker in PvE is because you’re bad and cant survive and need the extra cushion.

The worst part of this post is not the even the tone, its thakittens mostly true…

I wish I could fraps some of my fights on WvW.
I’m not the best thief out there, but I think I’m a decent player, and while on my thief I have some ways of escaping, other classes are just as slipery.

Some warriors are just impossible to pin down. Perma swiftness, nearly immunity to immo/cripple/chill and tons of mobility skills (that can even break immo). Be it with warhorn, shield block, sword or GS dashes, they can run like few others can.

Engies can be impossible to get also. Perma swiftness and vigor, tons of utilities to stun/immo/cripple you while running away and using tool-kit shield to block and/or elixirs to get invul.

x/D Eles are just a waste of time to run after. Even when you miraculously get them downed before they reach a tower they just vapor form to safety.

Rangers can be nearly impossible to get. Unless they are some dual-bow wielding zergling. The ones with GS//Sw/d can run a mile in stability while having their dogs cc’ing you. If they run a power build with signet mastery (active effects of signets affect the ranger) you wont get them when they run.

Any norn that decides to use his elite is gone across the map before he comes out of stealth.

Any time I face one of those people running away, I get really kitten ed. Not because they can run from me, thats no OP, but because people still say that the thief is the only one that can get away from fights…

Thief can’t really go zerker and be fine (in wvw). Stealth still gets you hit by AoE and random swings, and considering that you need to get close for that backstab, you are still very vulnerable to attacks.
You might be able to quickly drop some unaware GC or upleveled opponent, but you cant expect to survive much after that.

Other classes can do well with Zerker gear due to their buffs and blocks/invuls.
Guardians, Eles and even rangers (power signet build is great) can make some great roaming power builds.

But if you want to be an effective roamer you need to learn how to mix gear to get a better mix of stats. No matter what class you play.

Full zerk, IMO, is useless in WvW as you will get downed for any random AoE.

You need some more tough/vit.
Depending on your build mix some Valk/Cavalier and/or knights.

For fractals and other dungeons, you dont want to have high toughness as it attracts aggro. Mix valk and zerker for a good dmg and survival setup.

As a thief the only skill you need is recognize when you must stop wasting iniciative in order to retreat and find another less skilled player to kill,

if you are not a skilled thief, then yes. If you are a skilled thief you will try to break the bunkers and good players instead of running away.

People complaining that bad thiefs can kill bad players and thief has no challenge to it are just… meh
The challenge is to fight good players, not the bad ones.

If i’m able to outperform by far a thief i feel like i should be rewarded and the thief punished with a repair bill,

If you outperform a thief “by far” he wont be able to get away.

If one day the thief profesion becomes a challenge I will play it again, until then it will just gather dust,

i thought it sounds absurd.
then i realized anet has done absurd one time events before.

They did, and they said that they learned with it.
If you check the last events, you can see they are trying new things to get everyone involved while still giving the feel of a changing world.

IMO they are doing a good job with it.
I couldnt get in the Karka event and was very disappointed, but since they changed to this 3-5 day long events I could always find some time to jump in.

Skills:
Signet of Shadows-
Popular choice when D/D was around for securing stomps and roaming faster. With D/P around it sees very little use. Give it stunbreak on active to make it more uses outside of stomping. Blinding a backstab won’t help much when you’re still stuck in a Basi Venom for another second. Probably not enough of a change, but definitely wouldn’t hurt. 30->25sec cooldown would be reasonable, when looking at it comparatively with Infiltrator’s Signet.

I think a better way to improve this signet would be to make a smoke field (like black powder) It’s still a blind but now has some group utility with it and more combo power.

Scorpion Wire-
Niche ability. What niche it fills? Outside of jumping puzzles I have no clue honestly. Physical projectiles are weak for the most part and the damage is extremely low. I’d pump up the damage by about triple.

Its great to get people out of the walls in WvW, but the speed is so slow thakittens easy to dodge and it gets blocked too often.

Needle Trap-
Again, damage boost.

If the trap had a greater area and would pulse imob/poison it would have much more uses to more mobile gameplay (s/x and p/x)

Shadow Trap-
Easily accidentally dodged or walked around. Needs a bigger radius to be even begin balancing.

It needs a reliable teleport.

Ambush-
Summon a thief that dies even quicker than you do. Oh, it also does mediocre damage and offers no utility. I’d like to see it replaced with the scorpion wire or the blinding powder spamming thief from Thieves Guild. Possibly give it a 50/50 like Engie elixers.

In my experience it randonly summons one of the 2 thiefs from the elite (maybe with less HP, but they have the same skills. One AoE blinds and unload, the other scorp-wire and HS/auto attack. The main problem with this is thakittens unreliable who you going to summon and the AI is, well the AI… Standing in AoE/100b and shooting itself to death against reflection shields/walls.

Would be nice to have rifle or longbow, but I doubt that giving a long range ST dps weapon to a stealthy/mobile class is going to happen anytime soon.

Off-hand sword would be nice, but doing what? blocks and parry?
We have blinds and interrupts with OH pistol, dmg and stealth with OH dagger…
D/S would look quite funny… Like a left-handed thief…

I hope focus and other magic weapons stay out of the thief options. IMO, dark arts magic is the necro area…

As a thief I run many different weapon-sets.

I like d/d//sb the most as the dmg gain from CnD is quite nice on small fights and sb is great on bigger fights when you need to back off from the aoe area.

IMO d/p can be better than d/d on some situations.
when you need more cond removal or when the opponent(s) are hard to keep in melee range.
But in larger fights, the smoke field gets under other fields and its hard to get your stealth (fire aura is not what I had in mind with my HS!).
the problem with this combo is also ranged ground-target aoe. If the opponent has any idea how you work he can really give you problems.
The stealth from the combo is much shorter than your utils and you need to pass by the combo, sometimes more than one time. Placing ranged AoE over the smoke field is going to hit the thief.
When Im on my thief and find someone with d/p I use shortbow and place a poison field and some cluster bombs over the field while taking distance. Thiefs guild and ambush trap are also great as the melee thief will mess up the combo standing in the way of the HS.

WvW is all about groups and server strategy.
You run from the zerg, great, that zerg is now taking your tower. You did nothing
You killed a guy? No big deal, hes back at spawn and going to join some people to take a camp…

Pop my turret abilities and he gets perma-blinded, has like 10 seconds of burning, has 6+ stacks of bleed, Rocket Turret lands the first knockdown, I time the supply crate for the second stun, rocket turret knocks down a third time. All knockdowns in a row without him being able to act after eating the first one.

At this point the thief still has all the burning, bleeding, and now poison on him, is at 5% hp, and is stunned on his back while immobilized. Shadow Return, Hide in Shadows, runs away at half health with no conditions on him already out of combat.

Am I the only one that thinks its crazy how can someone apply such an amount of CC and conditions to leave the opponent without being able to act and at the same time complain that others are OP?

Apothecary gear might now be affordable!
