The site says that skill challenges are becoming hero challenges and hero points will replace skill points, so I’d imagine they would just convert them 1-1.

Only skill points gained from skill challenges though.
The vast majority of skill points however are gained from Scrolls and leveling, neither which will be converted to Hero Points.

You’d have to tell me where you saw that. There really doesn’t seem for there to be a reason for that to be true. But I clearly remember reading about leveling as a way to gain hero points.

I suppose you could gamble that they will not convert the actual scroll, and might want to find a home for those points on a characters now, but seems like they would be making more work for themselves if they tried to distinguish where your points came from after the fact.

They’d have a billion people claiming they counted their points wrong…and seriously I doubt they have ever built that reporting feature.

Troubadour Profession Idea

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: lukejoe.1592

lukejoe.1592

Just having a since GW2 binge weekend, and partly out of excitement for the Revenants, was kicking around this Troubadour adventurer class professional in my head. It’s meant to appeal to people who perpetually ask when Bards will be added, without actually being a true support class. (We don’t even have true healers, so true support is definitely not going to happen.)

Basic gist, the Troubadour is kind of built around a traveling performer archetype, equal parts Bards and Carnie. Not going to include any numerical specifics, because I don’t try that hard.

Was thinking that the unique mechanic could be tying FI-F4 to some unique acrobatic moves that make the professional super mobile.

Weapons basically stick to a circus theme. I see these being legit ones.

Two Handed:
Hammer: Kind of a short, choppy fighting style rather than the huge swings of the warrior and guardian. I see the #5 launching an enemy into the air like a carnival strength test game. “Ring the bell”

One handed:
Double daggers: Ranged. The whole skill set is made out of trick dagger throws. Maybe #5 is an evasive skill.
Double maces: Sort of a brawler’s style, with main hand and off hand skills that cause cripple.
Sword (main only): Debonair as balls!
Scepter: A place for your music magic.

Off-hand:
Daggers and maces: See above.
Torch: I actually have some specific ideas. #4 is called flame eater, and grants quickness and might. Blow out s cone of fire for extra cool down time. #5 is just shoving the torch in an enemy’s face.
Focus: More music magic.

Utilities:
Rhymes: Shouts with long channel times. During the channeling, the Troubadour can only dodge roll and auto attack. But he/she sings a jaunty tune/poem like: “The Jabberwocky” (causes confusion), “Travelers song” (grants stability and swiftness), etc.

Stories: Troubadours bring words to life! Summon up spectral versions of fairy tale heroes to fight for along you for a short time. I’m think: a trio of devilish Charr cubs, a human princess who becomes a bandit, an old Norn woman with a big cleaver, the Asura version of Rumpelstiltskin, a Sylvari knight with a sad love story, and (for underwater) a little mermaid! Legendary: A titan?

Firecrackers: Grenades that explode in sparks and colored smoke.

Magic tricks: The hand is quicker then the eye! Stage magic themed cantrips.

Signets: obvi!

Fun thinking up, and fun sharing.

I’m only getting to the Marjory and Kasmeer story now, but I’m also a little bugged out by the presence of so many lesbians in GW2 to no gay male characters that I have seen. (I hate Sylvari so I have never done their personal story sorry.) Either way, Tyria has got to the the only world ever with more lesbians on it than gay dudes. Possible reclass option?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: lukejoe.1592

lukejoe.1592

Back in WoW, with the advent of Death Knights as a “Hero Class” I thought it would be cool if you HAD to sacrifice another character in order to make one, complete with your new DK retaining some modified skills of your former class, but as others have pointed out…you’d really have to design a game from the ground up with that in mind, and it would probably be a horrible idea for them to introduce profession switching now (especially with their tendency to half-kitten several of their ideas).

So no, hate this suggestion. Create a new character. Some of us are already stock piling Tomes of Knowledge for the occasion.

Ranger Pets

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: lukejoe.1592

lukejoe.1592

I’m not sure why people who want to play a ranger without a pet are playing a ranger at all. It’d not like there are not other bow wielding, trap setting professions out there. I think that if you say, this professions mechanic is to play with pets—you can assume that the players who choose that profession want to play with pets!!!!

And since we know they are getting a Druid who will use a staff and probably focus on magic and not on melee, I think those of you hoping to shed your pet are going to be very very disappointed as…I’m kind of guessing that Ranger who are Druids will still be using pets!

Now…we could stand to get rid of those useless nature spirits. Or at least give them models that don’t all look identical, and stop making us spec into them just so they can walk around on the legs they clearly have!!!

Boring races

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: lukejoe.1592

lukejoe.1592

I don’t think we need any other races. (I only play Human’s anyway.) Some more style options would be just swell, but in the other direction. Right now a lot of the male human style options are pathetically limited. Since I have 6 male humans! It becomes a challenge to make them all look different.

You can alter faces a bit, so I think we’re solid there, but come on with the hair! Most of the hair options are either just horridly bad. Enough with the afros and scroll cuts in fantasy games please; they shouldn’t even have clippers! And the others are just very VERY poorly executed. It’s not to much to ask that hair look like hair right?!

But the OP is right that charr armor looks awful! I would never turn a helmet to visual if I played a charr. (I did try, but couldn’t stand the way he walked!)

If Anet were to introduce another race, I think we should see some playable Dwarfs! Dwarfs are always fun to style, and they usually look good in armor.

If Anet felt the need to imitate Blizzard so closely, they could have just finally given us mounts! Getting across their kitten world take forever.

But Seriously——
I find it annoying that people on this thread are pretending not to know the difference between being unwilling to pull core game mechanics (like rifles and pistols) that are an everyday component of the game and having the decency to cancel or alter a special event (that calls attention to itself precisely because it isn’t necessary or core to the game play) when a real life tragedy so closely resembling the joke is playing itself out in the media as we speak. If you don’t understand the distinction now, hopefully you will when you GROW UP.

And it’s not like they had to skip April Fools all together. They are in the middle of trickling out info about HoT.

Is Sanctuary working as intended?

in Guardian

Yeah, that doesn’t answer the question. If the ettin were a player with a greatsword in AOE would Sanctuary protect me? Cause the greatsword swing is akin to an ettin swing; they both hit multiple people. But I’m not sure what I got hit with was even that. There official wiki doesn’t have a very good breakdown of what your average Ettin is capable of, but surely they aren’t ground targeting. If “Sanctuary does not protect from AOE damage attack” is the answer then the answer might as well be “Sanctuary does not protect from ettins.” So is that how it’s supposed to work?

Would pairing sword and mace on swap work at all?

in Guardian

Posted by: lukejoe.1592

lukejoe.1592

The focus isn’t what people seem to think it is though. I’m not sure why melee players seem to have a obsession with it. It’s really not for you.

If you’re looking for survival you need to put your sword down and pick up a mace. The mace is what we have that offers constant survival.

The shield isn’t for that; it’s for tanky TEAM support. And the focus certainly isn’t for that. It carries a ranged attack for scepter users and a panic button for when a caster is over whelmed.

For survival to a melee player, those three blocked attacks in that tiny window every 45 seconds aren’t going to come close to the constant constant healing and regular blocks a mace is going to offer you.

If you pair your defense main hand mace with the torch—our offense oriented off hand—you’ll get the quick kills you want and keep your health high.

Eight Needed Game Improvements

in Suggestions

Posted by: lukejoe.1592

lukejoe.1592

Here are 8 changes/additions I would love to have implemented:

Short Version:
1. Remove Invulnerable Mobs
2. Remove Teleporting Fees
3. Dynamic Level Scaling = Area’s current level + (Character Level / 10)
4. Add timers to force advancement/reset broken events
5. Increase Defend events’ difficulty for each successive success
6. Be able to readjust trait points at will
7. Mob respawn times scaling to the number of players nearby
8. Fade obstacles to improve camera angling

1. Yes and No. Pathing exploits are bad, but I’ dont think I’m the only one who read and didn’t think first of pathing exploits. Anet doesn’t have a refined product when it comes to this issue, if a Vet Cave Troll can suddenly decide to turn around and get regen, that’s a power I should get too!

2. Yes—The thing about necessary gold sinks. They can’t kitten people off. Keeping the economy reasonable is a good goal, but if we continually HATE the gold sinks they do try to implement, what’s the point. Both crappy gold sinks and inflated economies make the game NOT FUN. We have the right to ask that the game be fun and that the gold sinks add to the fun not subtract. Waypoint costs, especially one from a defeated position, need to go.

3. Disagree, I think the scaling is pretty good right now. Area level +2 or something? It’s what I’ve noticed and +2 is a FUN level advantage. Enough that you never need to wait around for other players but not so much that the game mechanics stop mattering.

4. Yes.

5. Yes. I think this is a great idea. I have no clue what would happen if those centaurs in Kessex Hills ever got the bridge repaired. We’re missing out.

6. YES. Seriously, GW marketed itself as a game that had learned the lesson of other MMO’s well. Really? I do a lot of stupid grinding. There’s a lot of crappy gold sinks that seem hamfisted and lame. And I can’t change my traits on the fly without going to a trainer? GW2 decide to look at WoW, and they said “I think Blizzard had it right on trainers?”

6.5. Get rid of the manuals. They are hella dumb! Even if you WANT me to have to pay 1G to unlock the next trait tier…there is NO reason I should have to journey back to the burbs to get a book for it. You can put that kitten right in the UI, and it’s seriously disappointing that some professional game developers didn’t think of that before I did.

7. I’m not sure what this one is about. I generally think mobs respawn to quickly and I get attacked from behind by mobs I already cleared all to often.

8. I don’t know what the fix is for the camera, but that kitten is BROKEN!

And I want to add…as always…

9. There needs to be a auto-heal for a killing blow against a mob that is not a result of condition damage or ground targeting. The game is broken because there are too many times where it’s advantageous to let a wounded mob down you so you can get the rally heal instead of winning a fight outright. Broken game!

10. Fixing turret targeting needs to be a high priority. I’m putting my engineer away until they get this fixed. Thanks to my handy net turret, those ogre supplies aren’t going anywhere!

in Suggestions

Posted by: lukejoe.1592

lukejoe.1592

Egads! No. No to that complexity that would only inject more pointless grinding into the game. 2 really horrible suggestions…customize individual weapon skills by play style…and unlock weapon skills based on achievement. None of that.

You already get to customize your weapon skills to your play style. It’s called switching weapons. If they implemented your system it would make the game more fun because the’re would be a “right answer” for different kinds of players and all you’ll have added is one more thing we have to know/tediously configure to make our characters optimum.

And unlock weapon skills by achievement? Are you kidding? You want to kill 10 things with each weapon just to unlock your number 2 skill? That’s an insane level of grinding. Especially for elementalists who have to unlock each weapon 4 individual times. No no no to that.

How to Fix Elementalist conjured Weapons

in Suggestions

Posted by: lukejoe.1592

lukejoe.1592

I think the great sword and bow are fine. The GS is obviously more powerful than normal skills and does nice aoe when it lands, and the bow is great for dagger players who want to pick up a little rAOE.

But I have yet to see a situation where any of the other 3 are preferable to my normal weapons skills because they don’t have really established roles other than to be “fun” to play with.

In the conjured weapons defenses, when I sue them in groups I usually do see people picking them up. So it looks like players use them at least.

Anyway, I do not agree with your suggestions for the great sword. I think they could rework the axe and hammer, but the great sword is okay.

To answer your questions, yes having a sword + shield is going to “work.” You’ll be able to solo just fine with any weapon except the staff. But for killing things efficiently, skip the shield and the focus. Truthfully, shouldn’t need them to stay alive. And take a good look at the torch. I think it’s by far the best guardian weapon right now.

Don't "fix" Guardian Shields

in Suggestions

Posted by: lukejoe.1592

lukejoe.1592

It would be lame to “fix” Guardian shields, because they aren’t broken. Their is nothing wrong with mitigation in the game and adding (anymore) passive mitigation to shields will just reward bad players.

I’ve heard people say a couple things about the current shield skills that don’t make sense to me, including “a front cone that adds protection to allies is useless for a tank because we’re always in front of our party.” Smacks of a “this is different than WoW, and I don’t like it” comment. If you’re tanking in GW2 it doesn’t seem like you’re “always” supposed to be anywhere. If you are, you’re not making use of the active mitigation skills anet gave you…ergo bad tanking. Please don’t just stand there; you’ll get your party killed.

But let’s say this is a conversation about WoW, is a front cone spell that applies protection useless to tanks? No. It’s freaking ideal! Go back to tank school. Where are you supposed to be? Where are your DPS players supposed to be? If you’re tanking in WoW (for all but a few raid or special fights), you hopefully took responsibility for TURNING your enemy around so it’s BACK is to your DPS players…which would put them directly in front of you ready to receive protection from your front cone. Would you rather have the spell AOE from the center, wasting power on your backside where you’re DPS players and healer should definitely not be standing?

I’ve also heard people say that the focus spell Shield of Wraith should be a shield ability instead. I disagree. Pop the button and you can ignore 3 attacks is a very boring tank skill compared to the area push back and front cone AEO. And Shield of Wraith does nothing to protect your party. It’s a panic button spell for casters that also does AOE damage in case you “waste” it. That’s why it’s on the focus, and it should stay there.

That’s all. Pro-Guardian Shields as is.

Nah, it would break guardians. Too many of the guardian’s slot abilities are AOE from our central positions, so your suggestion means re-balancing all of guardian’s utility. I’ve been playing equal parts elementalist and guardian. I like the guardian combat way more, because while it’s true that we have only medium quality ranged damage we have a ton of creative and fun gap closers that make us a lot of fun to play. I enjoy the kite game on my elementalist, but I don’t want to do it with my guardian. And I don’t want my guardians gap-closers and utility re-balanced for the addition of bows. Something could be done to make the Scepter more competitive with the guardians other awesome weapon combinations (my fav right now is mace/torch), but it’s probably not going to be adding any new weapons.

That’s all true, and great advice. But it’s not really responsive to my suggestion. It’s great to know how to exploit your rallies and how to counter opposing teams’ rallies, it’s another to have situations where losing a fight is preferable to winning a fight. If they added the small heal to a killing blow, you’d always want to win the fight (i.e. better game), but all of that fun down-mechanic and the meta-game strategy of exploiting downs (going down near weak players/NPCs and going down on the point) would still be there for people to have fun with.

Small Heal on a Killing Blow

in Suggestions

Posted by: lukejoe.1592

lukejoe.1592

Each profession should do a small amount (maybe 1/10 or 1/15 total) of self healing on a killing blow while battling out in the world.

It seems like their are strategic reasons to NOT kill a weak enemy and allow yourself to go down instead, giving you have an easy foe to pick off for the rally. This is opposed to finishing the weak foe off, and going down against a higher health opponent and failing to get the rally.

This seems like a strategy that’s not intended by the designers. And I think it’s less real world (objectively my characters should never prefer going down), and it muddles the game up by obscuring combat objectives.

Adding a self heal to killing blows would correct the issue. Because I’d then always prefer to finish off a weak foe and retreat rather than trying to use the down mechanic “offensively.” I don’t think there is any reason the self-heal shouldn’t work in PvP as well. And to avoid abuse it could be added as an effect to only direct damage abilities, i.e. no self-heal for killing blows the result from ground target spells or condition damage. And there could also be an effect recharge time, i.e. no more than 1 of these kind of heals in any 30 second period.

A 100% speed boost from a little horsey would make the world content vastly more playable.

And WoW rocks. To the extent that adding mounts—seriously lifestyle improvements—would make Guild Wars 2 “more like WoW” (which is not much extent at all) it would only be an improvement.

What do you mean, there are already otters in GW2. All my human characters are skinny hairy guys.

Yes, mounts. Your way points are too few, and too far between. It’s seriously a chore getting from A to B. Mounts AND more way points!

Why the tedium? Still with this stuff?

So you’ve taken huge steps to eliminate some of the tedium from MMO’s. Getting rid of quest givers is a huge step. So WHY?! With this commitment to streamlining the game for me do I have to do so much tedious stuff, which seems all the more tedious becuase I feel like I was promise more.

I love the account bound bank. Now I don’t HAVE to mail things between characters on the same server…but why does that mean i CAN’T? What’s the deal with that? Bank’s are few and far between. They are hard to find. And it’s 2 load load screens to get there and get back from a way point in the field. Why on earth did you create such a creative mail system (I love being able to right click items in my inventory to send them) and then make it USELESS?! Because seriously, I send items to myself more then to other people.

And speaking of Way Points, why are they so few and far between. I do SO MUCH running in this game that’s just between way points, and heaven forbid one be in contention.

It just seems like for a game that wanted so much to get rid of arbitrary tediousness you left a lot of arbitrary tediousness in the game…and I can’t figure out why. There are other examples. Unlocking all weapon skills when you’re an Elementalist is an absolute grind! I’m going to do my personal story with an unlocked weapon, so what part of grinding skales to unlock 20 staff skills was part of your vision for this game? I thought I was promised that there would be none of this.

My suggestion is to get rid of all that tedium! You’ve done a great job with questing. Really, hats off. It’s the best in the industry. And the characters in the game are actually decently compelling. I think there should called the “fighting coiffeur”! But you need to take that philosophy to the rest of the game, preferably quickly. Every piece of tedium is an insult next to the quest mechanics. You had a great idea, but it’s in a lemon of a UI or something.

Edit: “Inventory full! Inventory full!” WHY? Why is it full? Does it have to be? If you had just eliminated that one particular annoyance. You would have dealt a fierce blow to MMO tedium…but you choose not to. Why? Why on earth did you decide frequently pausing your game to go sell off junk (via a way point NOT conveniently located near you) was something you wanted to keep?! Why?
