woodenpotatoes has made comic videos explaining the complete storyline and also a playthrough of all missions and end-game areas. However playing the game yourself is also strongly recommended by me if you like the gameplay.

If you’d actually check the prices and trendlines, you’d see the prices DEcrease long term. Several are flirting with the 100g mark. Underwater ones are no more than 40. Only the greatswords are over 300g.

Why Orr brings out the worst in the "community"

I dare say, if players have a hard time surviving, then they might, just might, try working together.

I dare say, if Anet makes Orr harder I would do the same like most of my guild-mates already did: quit GW2 and play games which are less annoying.

I call bluff for 2 reasons:
- the only reason you claim to leave this game, is because you’re out of arguments so you go to the last one, the money argument. However since the game is f2p this is not an issue. You make this argument because you care and you will stay in the game regardless. The “I’m gonna quit” argument is typical for someone who’ll keep playing. Pulling your guildies in is an unfalsifiable strawman and therefor not a valid argument. Even more to the point, really quitting this game is impossible, coming back is easy and free unlike other MMOs which require the immediate investment of 15 euros. You say your guildies quit, I say they may be taking a break until lost shores, which sounds more reasonable becauseL
- All other MMOs are far more annoying by default than the worst of the worst in GW2. Making money in Queensdale is just as easy. Copper is easily farmed, sells well in vast quantities and the money can be converted into whatever you want.

Concerning reviving other players: if possible take a look whom you revive. It´s bad, seeing groups of bots running around, it´s worse seeing how they are revived when they sometimes are downed.

I haven’t seen a single bot in this game yet let alone bot trains, and I’m actually keeping my eyes open for them considering the vocal minority reporting this “problem”. I did my part in making sure my account is 200% secure with two-factor on both email and gw2 account + unique passwords for both.

Is Orr annoying? Yes. Difficult? No.

I dunno what some people in this thread are doing wrong, but when I pull 5 Risen by accident I can still kill them all with glass cannon spec. The only bothersome thing is the high spawn rates and the high number of mobs, meaning you need to kill a hundred mobs everytime you want to run to a resouce node / DE / any place at all.

Same. I kill packs of risen easily. I think people take this backwards. Do not do Orr in green gear … it costs less than a single gold at TP prices to have full yellow crafted by a guildie. Ten gold will get you max dmg weapons. For 180 AC tokens = 1 day you have an exotic in head, hands or feet so three good days you can be mostly exotic geared + full yellow on the rest. That will make life far more easy. Imho also avoid MF gear since killing faster and surviving has exactly the same effect with less trouble.

Why doesn't the daily reward cover repair costs?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: marnick.4305

marnick.4305

1/ repairs are cheap, about ten silver on a full set of exotics with a single broken item
2/ dying is almost impossible for people with skill. Only on the first run in an explorer it may happen once or twice or once with failPUG = leave group.
3/ from the odd key or some daily I get I sometimes get repair canisters. These usually suffice. I use 1 canister every few days.
4/ while not full orange yet replacing gear happens faster than breaking it.

Repair costs aren’t a probelm.

I’m not here to white knight for this game, but as someone that played the original Guild Wars, you gotta have a different mindset than what you’re used to with other MMOs. In fact just throw it out the window.

The most important thing one needs to remember about GW games is this: No commitments. That usually explains what you may perceive as a population decline is simply players just not logging on to do something else, play the new Halo, whatever.

With no commitments and fairly easy to attain goals (not counting legendaries of course) a person can finish their checklist pretty quickly and likely won’t have much else to do.

The problem is, GW2 is most definitely an MMO. Unlike the first GW, these population issue will kill the game, because of that very important difference.

B2P or not, they need people to stay interested in the game, and the more empty it gets, the less people are going to care enough to come back. Ever. It is a downward spiral that will sink the game just as much as it would in a subscription based MMO.

On one hand, yes and even moreso than other MMOs due to dependance on groups for group events. On the other hand, there’s still people flocking to this game, so this problem is not present as of yet.

Furthermore, the non-commitment will actually create a stable bottom line of diverse players who come back and go creating an ever changing mass of players so activity is pretty much constant. As long as high-tier zones are properly populated, such problems don’t present themselves.

A sick Guild Wars 2 review

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Last week my girl has influenza so I had to take good care of her. It was an interesting experience gamewise. She was resting on the 3-people sofa, while I was on another one with my laptop. When she needed me I could simply press alt+f4 and help her out with whatever she needed, be it food, emptying the puke bin or carrying her to the toilet. Yes taking care of someone can be less than comforting at times. In the meanwhile I could still advance slowly to whatever I was going for, be it dailies, completing a map, crafting or farming karma and mats.

Nothing I did was really time demanding in a continuous fashion. Dying in game isn’t a problem as the health of a loved one is worth a few silver since waypoints are abound. Even though my playtime could be interrupted at any moment I still felt like making progress towards that elusive goal: my first legendary. I crept to 92% map completion up from 80%. I raised one crafting profession far higher with homegrown mats, I gathered another 100k karma and a few golds while taking care of a sick one. In no other MMO would such a playstyle be remotely possible.

I support this one. It takes too much time to filter through two-thirds of the armors which are next to useless for every single profession yet show up for no reason at all. For weapons it’s even worse as an engi since I can only use 3 types.

Sometimes decisions can be made better by the player. I often farm all collectibles yet only keep a select set. All others go directly to the TP.

An auto-deposit option may be OK for some, but actually I wouldn’t use it. Also while farming it’s always nice to keep an eye on the amount already collected, for example while going for 200 ore or something like that.

I also like the view of having a lot of stuff disappear. That gives a nice feeling of saving up stuff.

Legendary Aspirations “So you want your first Legendary Weapon?”

This means you don’t even have the easiest things required to get a legendary yet and you say its easy. Add to this very rare mats worth hundreds of gold you need to farm.
I play several hours a day, not farm – just play, and I got only 12 gold now. Would need to have at least 50 times more to make an legendary. I just can’t see this happen if I don’t farm or play Trading Post. And even if I had so much money I wouldn’t spend them for a skin, legendary or not.

And yet I’m well on my way for most things. You didn’t understand what I’m saying. It is easy to get, it just takes a bit of time. If I could get all that stuff without playing much, then how could it be difficult for people who actually have time in the day? If I were still a student or between jobs, I would have it by now. I’m 100% positive on that one.

mickey

I would rather go through a process like in EQ and EQ2 to get pre legendaries rather than keep throwing rares and exotics in mystic forge to get lucky. No skills involved in that.
When GW2 devs said in manifesto they want to get rid of all the nuisances of old MMO i guess they forgot to add ‘RNG’ and ‘LFG spam’ to their list.

If you don’t want any RNG I recommend playing any other MMO … oh wait EVERYTHING is RNG in other MMOs. One component of the legendary is RNG and you complain about the whole game being RNG … are you serious? Especially when the RNG can be mitigated by using the less random recipe?

As for the lfg “spam”. If you can’t stand 5 minutes of lfg as a DPS in GW2 … again… try your luck in any other mmo.

If they ever decide to remove RNG and make this whole process based on player skills. I might give it a go. I like challenges but this whole gambling with mystic forge seems like a rush job as if devs went out of ideas and wanted to rush legendaries for end game.

Maybe part of your player skill is being a lucky player? If you’re not there’s always the 1 clover recipe which is far more predictable than the 10 clover recipe.

Did Guild Wars 1 have any event for Christmas or new year holidays?

- Wintersday indeed for christmas and new year’s eve
- canthan new year mirrors the chinese one, although we might have to wait until expo for that
- Also wintersday in july but that’s just drops not an event
- GW1 always celebrated birthday, after few years also with big events
- Saint Patrick’s day
- Talk like a Pirate day
- April Fools is celebrated ingame, last two years with questline
- this year there was a release event for GW2 in GW1

Those are the big ones I remember out of my head. Maybe someone can complete the list.

Halloween was always the best imho for GW1 although the april fools quests were epic too. The quests were usually fun but the finale for Winterday wasn’t really cool imho.

It’s not difficult to get, and that’s coming from a casual. Already got 200sp, 200k karma, half the badges from wvw and dungeon, one profession on max, 85% explored. Money trickles in and I save that for the golden achievement. So in 2 months playing as a casual I’m actually making quite some progress.

Furthermore all precursors are trending down so getting one will become feasible pretty soon.

Will I get it tomorrow? No of course not don’t be silly…. but I do see it as a realistic goal to have a legendary on my birthday in march next year.

As for my profile… I work 10 hours a day, have a girlfriend who is more of a priority than games, I run a lot and still managed to get all this…. I even went on holidays for 2 weeks so that doesn’t count either. Any student or person-between-jobs could have it by now.

Can I has endgame in chess where I’d start with 4 queens because I’ve been playing for over 20 years?

Can I has endgame in golf where Tiger Woods starts with a handicap of +5 because he’s one of the best?

Can I has endgame in counter-strike source where I start every round with AWP because I played more than you?

Can I has endgame in DOTA where I start with 3000 gold because I played since aeon of strife?

Can I has endgame in football where Real Madrid has 30 players on the field and use hands because it’s the most successful club?

Or maybe we can actually make competitive games competitive because you’re a good player, not because you played longer. Thanks for not ruining GW2. We’re not playing all other MMOs because they have it wrong.

Too bad none of these are mmorpgs…. That’s the problem people thought they were buying an mmorpg…

They are all competitive games. As such they are perfectly comparable to any game profiling itself as an esport.

What people want when buying an mmorpg is a living world to get lost in, extensive visual character customization and an ability to live your story. They want to become a hero in a world needing heroes.

Most get duped into gear grind…

New GW trinity idea

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: marnick.4305

marnick.4305

It does appreciate the multi-tasking more than your role system. Putting people in rigid roles is what’d make gw2 fail. I’m primarily dps through conditions, although some conditions are actually support (vuln) or control (blind, weakness). I have 3 blasts on my bar which makes for control. All in all that’s what makes for flexibility.

The rigid trinity is for people without ability to adapt, an no changing of systems will change that. I remember in first beta people tried their best to make pure healers without realizing they were actually kittening their team by not using the damage skills on their bar. Most ridiculous were the calls for “water eles” completely ignoring the fact that kittening out 75% of your weapon skills is a bad thing, not a good one.

Players will change, but paradigm shifts invariably take a while. Come back with your suggestion in 3 months.

Why is GW2 so Stingy with the Titles?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: marnick.4305

marnick.4305

Because in the end only GWAMM-rank mattered in GW1. Titles have to be difficult to get or become meaningless. Take the 60% exploration title for Cantha… might as well have no title. Same for r2 lightbringers or r6 sunspears.

If I see a title on someone I want to be impressed, otherwise a GWAMM track will become necessary and all other titles actually lose all significance.

@Tosha Daydreamer.9251
There is difference, if u rob bank, and take a bag of money with u in middle of town and brag about it, u will PROLLY get arrested.

Oh sorry I must have missed all those botters bragging on official forums they’re botting and not getting banned.

The truth is more nuanced.
1/ I didn’t get a single spam email in the last month
2/ I was late to the party at 80 but I haven’t seen a single bot. Not in Sparkfly Fen, not in WvW, not in Cursed Shore. As far as I’m concerned, bots don’t exist in this game.
That’s Far Shivs.

I do see how botting is a big problem, however don’t forget botting is almost invariably on stolen accounts. The best way to combat bots is to do the following:
1/ get a strong password. There is currently a 100 character limit. Make use of that by using a long sentence from an obscure song or speech, complete with punctuation and capitalization, preferably not english. Polish or French are good because of accent abuse.
1.1/ do not use this password anywhere else
2/ get a unique google email address only for GW2 and set up IP authentication for this account. Have a unique password distinct from the GW2 password
2.1/ have this account 2-factor over your mobile phone.

Next you can accept your local IP for both gmail and gw2 and not worry about it anymore. It takes half an hour at most, but given a dungeon takes half an hour too, what would be more important right now?

I am 99% confident that I could post both my GW2 and gmail password right now and not have my account stolen. That means I just eliminated one potential bot from the game and a potential of 100g that could be sold.

1/ Jormag is the most developed dragon currently so he’s first

3/ Kralkatorrik is second expansion most likely. Most likely Jormag expansion will open up some Crystal Desert areas at the same time

New GW trinity idea

marnick.4305

People speccing pure dps are doing it wrong imho. OK it’s good to have raw dps but as far as I see the moar dots nao approach is far more effective. My engi is completely condition specced and I feel it makes me the most flexible. Actually gives me room to have some control skills depending on situation. That makes me about .7 damage and .3 control. Add a defensive necro and we have 1.1 damage, .3 control and .6 support

As far as forcing trinities … no game. But your concept is no different from the current damage-control-support idea which works just fine. A team in gw2 works just fine as long as it has at least one of each instead of exactly one of each and dps fillers.

Anyone who says they will leave the game of this trivial issue is either exaggerating(most likely) or is some bratty kid who has a knee jerk reaction to everything. I am pretty sure Anet has some autonomy and they do what they will when they will. All that is up is us is how we choose to enjoy the game.

Actually, I left several games because of this not-so-trivial issue and in the end always returned to Guild Wars 1. For me the cycle was as follows:
- guild wars 1
- new MMO I join with friends
- as a time limited player (I have a job, you know the thing your mother to buy your expansion pack) I can hardly do 50% of the content
- expansion pack comes out which destroys my not even half complete character
- go back to GW1

It happened in WoW. It happened in LotR. It happened in Aion. It will happen again if they raise the cap in GW2. The constant level cap was GW1’s killer feature for me.

Almost. If YOU screw over a.net because they gave you exactly what you asked, they will ban you. That’s not screwing you over even more, it’s actually taking relevant action on fraudulent credit card transactions. They are running a business here and you shoplifting doesn’t help in that regard.

I should warn you for doing that too often. Your credit card can and will be flagged as fraudulent, you may get in quite some trouble if you keep asking money back for perfectly valid transactions. OK once work just fine and you have the right to do that. Doing such things too often will get your credit card revoked for good reason. I don’t have the patience or time to really do those things TransparentlyOpaque.

And Nox, they may be a big company but if they are going to stay in business they have to learn to treat their customers better. I’ve already initiated a refund, I’m not going to be screwed over.

Deciding that a game is not worth playing because you didn’t win a skin is a little bit like deciding that life is not worth living because you didn’t win the Powerball.

When did I decide it’s not worth playing? I’ll still play the game, but I’m definitely not supporting them with my hard earned cash anymore.

No offense here but 1. you bought the gems 2. you bought the keys. At that point their end of the transaction is over. You knew beforehand you were gambling, getting that skin was not guaranteed.

If you get your money back through your card company you are actually scamming a.net by not paying them for the service they provided, a service you specifically requested namely a gamble. It would be only logical to permaban your account due to fraudulent transactions.

If you really wanted the skin and not the gamble, you should have bought it of the AH or buy a non-gamble skin such as the mad king outfit. You can’t blame the casino for not winning the jackpot…..

So if this ticked you off enough to quit the game, sure get your money back, scam the company and get your account banned. If you want to continue playing you should realize at no point did they give you false promises.

Should Level Cap Increase in Xpacs?

NooOOoooOo
Quaggan doesn’t like high level cap.

It’s bad for all the reasons you listed under pro and level 80 is good for all the reasons you put under contra.

Sure add in new runes/skills and perhaps tie these to a new storyline and a separate progression track AoC style, but under no circumstances should the level cap be raised lest they alienate their entikittenget audience.

lol thats target entire flipped which has an insult lol (last two characters of entire and first three of target)

There’s three kinds of people involved here actually:
1: people who don’t like to gamble and those don’t buy the keys
2: people who like to gamble and therefor buy keys
3: people who don’t like to gamble and for some reason still buy keys

Group number 1 and 2 are perfectly fine and completely catered for. Group number 3… I seriously hope that’s a vocal minority because honestly if you are gambling money for virtual stuff when you don’t like taking a chance…. a.net is not to blame in this case in my opinion. Group number 3 should blame their spine, or rather, lack thereof.

tl;dr: vocal minority.

There’s basically two kinds of people when it comes to chances. Some people gamble, which means on average you lose but there’s a chance to win big. Other people take risks, which on average means you win but there’s a chance to lose a little.

The ones buying chests now are gamblers. Almost all of them will lose money on it in the hope of finding that elusive skin that sells for 300g. You and me are waiting until we see where the gamble turns in a risk, exactly what card counters do.

As long as neither becomes an addiction, neither is bad. Controlled gambling is fun, like throwing 50c in a slot machine to see what happens or throwing a 100€ on red once during holiday just as a bit of fun at the side. I’ve done that and never complained.

Taking risks takes a lot of time which can also lead into a negative addiction. But the only one to blame for an addiction is the person who didn’t have the spine to resist spending more than he could.

EG: I bought heaps of chests. We all know they will eventually rise in value because the flagship of the BLTP can’t sell at vendor price, that’s just bad business. Someone who tries to sell it should be intrigued for the value of these chests. Selling at 3c just shows the contents are practically worthless.
For a mere 1g investment I’m looking at a potential return of over a hundred gold guesstimating that the correct value for this thing should be at least 1s to make buying keys compelling.
On the other hand they might stay at 3c or become soulbound but those are small risks compared to the almost guaranteed huge gain.

I love this game because being a good player is more important than having good gear. There is no making up for lack of player skill with higher tier stuff. Either you’re bad and you die, or you’re good and you win. Gear doesn’t change that, neither does level actually. I’d take a 34 guildie to AC expl over an 80++ elitist any day of the week.

Seriously… 80++ what does that even mean? If you don’t know there’s nothing higher than 80 then you must surely be a bad player.

How much gold do you have ?

Who needs money. Between karma and dungeon tokens I’ve got all the gear I need.

Being poor is a state of mind, not a reflection of your financial assets. Buy poorly and sell poorly and you’ll be poor. Buy and sell wisely and you will end up with far more than you could dream of.

I don’t play the TP, I just sell everything to highest buyer and drop it off in the bank at the end of the day. That’s not optimal but I don’t care, I’m already full exotic. I am at about 10g atm with loads of liquid assets I didn’t sell yet. And that’s with only playing 2 hours a day tops.

I’m not envious of people running around with other shinies. I’ll save up for those and eventually get them. Even legendary seems feasible in the mid-long run.

Press H. Go to achievements. Check how many you haven’t done yet. Good luck have fun.

That’s what kept me going in GW1 for over 7 years. After the first 2 weeks of playing I never got a power increase anymore yet chasing the carrot was never that much fun in other games. Yes it’s all optional. It means you are not forced to do stuff you don’t like. Maybe you just don’t like the game? Nothing wrong with that, but the whole point of optional carrots is to only do them if you actually like playing the game (which I actually didn’t in other MMO games with forced carrots)

In my guild we farm AC every day because it’s easy to gear up. I started betting money on pulls from Lieutenant Khoblai. If I get pulled even once I pay up to a guildie. That improves my personal skill without me needing more equipment. I’m currently at the point where I could probably solo him without gear because I’ve become a better player. That’s more important to me than some numbers increasing.

I only do “sell on TP”, check if the buy and sell offers are within 1 silver. If so I just take the highest bidding offer and cash in. No need to hassle with spare change. Do not forget that 50 copper is only 0.005 gold.

58 000 trades with this 50c margin will give you the equivalent of a legendary precursor. It’s up to you whether that’s worth it. I don’t care one way or the other. It’s a game.

Remove the Ability to mail gold!

in Black Lion Trading Co

marnick.4305

Well… you shouldn’t inconvenience the regular players to combat bots//gold sellers. Removing mail is going to hurt the playerbase seriously while not harming the bots one bit. It would do more bad than it would do good.

All talk about guild banks in spite, that’s not a solution at all. A.net should combat bots by combatting bots, not by combatting normal players. eg there is a mailing cap on gold already for the first month, that seriously hampers gold farmers while not being a problem for regular players in the slightest.

Also, there is no hacking problem for the vast majority. I have a very long and unique password, I use mail authentication and my gmail is two-factored. I have never been hacked because I was never stupid enough to give my important passwords to untrustworthy sites (for which I have a weak password)

I don’t consider it a gamble box in that by default I get more than I paid for, however it might not be exactly what I need at the time. Those aren’t mutually exclusive.

It’s like a slot machine that always cashes out, however sometimes you may get pounds or canadian dollars so they might not appear useful now but they still have value when used properly.

Whats the best and worst gem shop item?

marnick.4305

I’ve been playing around with Black Lion Keys in Beta and found there’s actually quite some good stuff. Sure, it’s a gamble, but it’s offset by the following:
- the BL chest always gives more gemwise than a key costs so there’s net profit per chest.
- the BL chest gives a new key about 2/3rd of the time so basically profit is tripled.
- MF boosts, salvage kit, harvesting tools, repair canisters and others directly translate into gold.

So 1. you make a net profit on gems by using chests. 2. you earn more gold because of it and 3. all apparent costs are effectively halved because of high key drops from the chests themselves. Value for money they sure are the best, if and only if you can handle some 100% win rate gambling.

Who sets Gem prices?

Basically the system is the same as in GW1 for traders. In GW1 it took some time but in the end prices stabilized. Some events seriously shaked the economy and could influence prices but on average ecto was extremely stable in the long run.

Also, traders could run out! The same can and will happen to the gem trader, where some day all his gems are spent and he can’t sell any, not even at 100gp/100gems, until someone puts gems into the system again.

A casual's dungeon review

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: marnick.4305

marnick.4305

First of, what does casual mean to me? I means I don’t have a whole lot of time for RL reasons. In the scarce gaming time I have, I consider myself pretty hard core. I want to do optimal play because that’s the only way to make the most of my time. Casual doesn’t fit it to me, netiher for most “casuals”, but hey let’s stop arguing semantics. Casual now means time limited so I’m rolling with this flawed term. Even then, spending 6+ hours a week in a hobby would hardly be considered casual for any other hobby except gaming.

Ok. First story mode AC went fine so I went for Explorable. The first pug I joined wiped miserably. Then I did it with a guild and we aced every boss. What I found out was that most bosses were based on good teamplay and having an eye for calls. Gear was relatively unimportant, nor were skill selections crucial usually. That’s a good thing imho because it allows for every player to shine in his personal play style.

Ever since I’ve gathered a few hundred tokens from assorted dungeons. I’m not going for anything in particular, but I really like joining a group for a quick run. Quick does not mean easy, quick actually means playing quite well (except for exploits but let’s not go t here).

To me there’s no carrot. I can log in, find a good group in minutes (yay guild), run half an hour and log off. The idea of dungeons in this game is perfect. OK there’s some bugs, a few imbalanced bosses and not-so-obvious tactics. But once you know a dungeon, you can win due to player skill, not by outgearing it.

ye … I love dungeons. Compared to raids in other games, this game is far superior. As for raids themselves, the world dragons are beyond any raid ever seen. They bring back memories of MC and BWL, only better.
