I bought dusk 2 days ago for 325g (i made an offer) and got it within 5minutes, that’s not too expensive imo and now i got my twilight.

But you can always wait for welfare precursors.

Are you on welfare? No one could farm 325g legit when he has a job (unless he buys gems but for dusk that’s about 200 euro in gems)

No, i’m just good at making gold. i took me around 200 hours played to get twilight.

So you took the welfare route?

You may be good at making gold, but I’m better at making gems

Also your comment still doesn’t address the issue where people try to fit the gods with the dragons without any real reason (except for 6 equals 6 if an obscure myth from a lesser race is taken for granted).

I didn’t address it because I agree with you. There is – by all indication – no relation between the Six Gods and the Six Elder Dragons. My previous posts on the matter have always been about how while 2 or 3 gods match up with Elder Dragons, the other 4 or 3 do not (all dependent on how you match them up).

However, there is reason enough to believe there is indeed a sixth Elder Dragon – or at least there was.

Just feels like too much shoehorning. Some people even go as far to say Zaithan = Dwayna because of life/death and Jormag = Grenth because of ice. Makes absolutely no sense to me and it’s called fitting the evidence to the hypothesis. Science doesn’t work that way.

If you were going to create an index ...

marnick.4305

But at that point you’re basically indexing the entire set of tradable items, so.

If you can index everything, doing anything less just means you risk inaccuracies in your conclusions. So why not index everything ?

Because an index is usually based on goods players use on a consistent basis.
- foodstuff
- ecto
- mithril
- activators
- repair costs
- waypoints

that kind of thing

But since you don’t need any of that to play the game, the whole index is moot. IRL you can’t really go without heating, food or housing. That’s not really an option.

Most of the waypoint costs go towards maintaining a functional waypoint grid. These puppies required quite some power and with the current gas prices ….

Increasing gem prices is a good thing!

in Black Lion Trading Co

marnick.4305

I understand this feeling but that’s not a relevant issue. The mini you want costs gems, not gold. Why not pay cash for gems? The reason being you want it for free (RL moneywise) and because of that, the gemprice is on the rise. Thank you

As long as players are allowed to earn gems in-game it will absolutely be a relevant issue.

Anet is awful proud of the fact that they give characters an option when it comes to earning money for the gem store. As it stands now, it’s just a gimmick to get people to open their real wallets when they realize the outlandish time investment they will have to make in order to get a single extra bag slot for their inventory.

In guild wars 1 you didn’t even have the option of buying it with gold. No one complained. It was RL money or no extra bank slot. This thread just proves what cheapskates most elitists are. You want the bank slot, you don’t want to pay RL money for it and you don’t even want to pay gold for it. Seriously???

I don’t disagree on Anet’s right to earn real money with their digital goods. Go for it. But don’t hamstring those of us that choose, or have no choice but to go the harder route.

Last time I checked bank slots were 600 gems. That’s about 10g or 10 euros. Not a big deal, neither of it (although, granted, farming 10g takes far longer than earning 10 euros, even at minimum wage). A bag slot is actually cheaper gold-to-gems than a 20 slot bag.

Oh, and I would hardly call working 20 hours for a pirate costume – “getting it for free.” I don’t want handouts, I want a fair system.

20 hours? Do you live in China? C’mon please do the math before making a fool out of yourself. At minimum wage in Europe it’d be less than a single hour to earn the money for the pirate costume. If you go babysit your nephew for a night you can buy 2 costumes. Working one day in a factory gives you a level 80 alt (through crafting). Working one week at a student job (still minimum wage) give you enough for a legendary and then some. Get your facts straight. These are not extraordinary prices. The only reason I’m not dropping that much cash on guild wars 2 is because I have a partner to support.

Don’t forget the gems prices are so high because people are unwilling to pay money to a company that provides them fun. There’s only 1 way to get the prices down, and that’s buy supporting your favourite video game. In my opinion not really a bad thing since this support is completely voluntary.

Lesson learned- I don't buy gear with gems

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

marnick.4305

Let’s just make a quick comparison here:
- going to the movies with your girlfriend costs 2×7 euros for tickets + 2×7 euros for snacks which totals up to around 28 euros. It was a bad movie and your girlfriend dumps you 2 weeks later. 28 euros down the toilet. This is the main reason I don’t like going to the movies.

- my girlfriend on the other hand bought me a 28 euro gem card last week. I could deck out my alt in full exotics, get a craft up to 400 and get another bank slot. In fact, I did. Since full ascended armor won’t come any time soon, and take time to get, this 28 euros lasts for months if not years (not to mention I love my girlfriend even more for supporting my favourite game).

While this may be apples and oranges, I do see a clear 28 euros for 1.5 hours of a puppy movie compared to 28 euros for months and months of fun in a game. I’m not an economist like John Smith but I’d still call the gems the better investment.

1) buy yourself an exotic weapon with the money you have. That’ll make you competitive.
2) run dungeons. Doing all three dungeon paths for Ascalonian Catacombs gives you 180 tokens for about 2 hours of time. Head/Hands/Shoulders/Boots each cost only 180 tokens so you can get a piece of good gear every day. Use gw2lfg.com
3) join a guild and buy the back slot from the armorer. Costs gold but at least you’ll have a best in slot.

optional step 0) buy yellows for every slot to get started. For less than a gold you can get full rare armor. While not best in slot will give you enough stats to start doing dungeons/orr/southsun/whatever.

A Lore based reason for level/attribute caps

in Lore

Posted by: marnick.4305

marnick.4305

The good thing about Guild Wars 2 is that, although it still uses ‘levels’, they aren’t that important to the fight anymore. Dodging well and making good use of your skills matters a lot more.

In a sense, you could view this as the modern soldier. Some soldiers got better training and/or equipment (i.e. levels) than others. So if they for example would aim their gun, they’d be more likely to hit. However, making the decision when to shoot is much more important than the tiny difference in how well they can aim (not saying it’s not important of course).

To me, levels in guild wars are like that: training, gear and preparation that’ll give you a slight edge when performing your actions. But making the decision WHEN to do WHAT is where the real challenge comes in. Kinda like a boxer that can train all day to hit as hard as a truck, but he will still need to get past his opponent’s blocks strategically.

Yet a soldier who’s been in combat often enough doesn’t automagically get more gear, instead his EXPERIENCE is what makes him a better soldier. This doesn’t so much increase his stats but rather how to make better use of those stats. In GW2 terms this means an experienced player is better able to dodge and use the right skills on the right moment, yet experience points for some arbitrary reason still result in gear increases. A soldier working with game rules would take a flamethrower into a town and kill a million civilians in order to get his promotion.

On the Sixth Elder Dragon and its corruption

in Lore

marnick.4305

I would not ignore anything that any NPC or quest tells you. Everything is important. Everything has a purpose. Everything.

First off, let me tell you I knew all these hints since I played GW1 since day 1, no offense but the glaring errors in your post suggest you didn’t play before Factions. Cantha stood out like kitten balls and the Elonian mirrors were a huge red herring. I even remember this one quest that hinted a Utopia which DID NOT become an expansion. No need to belittle me on knowledge of the first game.
However, and let me be clear here, you’re cherry picking the hints that fit your idea that everything has a purpose. How about the sister staff to the Scepter of Orr? How about Livia picking it up? How about the Scarab Plague and the Twin Queens? How about the lonely vigil and weapon X? None of these things ever had a purpose, probably they never will.
Beyond that, you made more errors. Ghostly Hero being Turai was a serious retcon and Xunlai was never more than a banking agency. Luxon and Kurzick settlements were only added a few weeks before the release of Factions. As you may realize, none of these mattered until AFTER they mattered. The hints for EotN were also completely retconned since EotN was only designed after Utopia was scrapped and EotN had to be fit into existing lore.

To me, the bottomline being that Arena.net intentionally adds stuff that doesn’t matter to provoke discussions like this one. A world only starts to live when players make irrelevant stuff relevant in their imagination Besides, whatever an NPC tells you could be an outright lie or a fabricated myth passed over generations. Nothing matters until it matters.

As I’ve said in other threads already …. open test servers don’t work for a myriad of reasons and usually don’t result in any significant bug reports. Instead exploits are kept secret to go for world firsts.

It significantly devalues content updates for most players because the most optimal strategy is known weeks before any patch releases. The current system with a closed test realm no one knows about is far better.

3. I know there are testing realms already, i am not saying they should make ones for the dev’s to test.

I wouldnt completely dismiss this idea… Even if it is 5 of each proff from the community that test out their main to the full extent, just a little bit of input.

First rule of the alpha test: do not talk about the alpha test.

You do realize all these testers are bound by NDA?

Dude, you keep bringing these kittens out of content.. The alpha testing will always be done by the testers paid to do there job, what i am merely trying to suggest is that once all there testing has been done..for e.g.

Not quite. Alpha test is completely voluntary, and are usually top tier players who are invited to join in FOR FREE. Several GW1 guilds got invited because of top ranks on the ladder for example, while others got invited for community efforts. None of them are paid for being in the alpha.

They finish a new patch update, testers are happy, dev’s happy, ect..
Now were as they would have launched it now, they dont.
They release it into a “test realm” where the players will purposely try find bugs to give feedback to the Anet team so that they can fix these bugs before it goes live..
When something could be such a game changing move, completely OP a certain proff, whatever has not been put live for exploitations..

Except other games prove this doesn’t happen. Open test realms are actually about finding and keeping exploits secret to prepare for world firsts. They completely don’t serve their purpose. Theory and practice don’t seem to mingle very well.

Is there something you dont understand or should i go kitten on your kittenssa again?

I do understand you understand nothing about test realms, and when I try to explain you go all puppy on me.

TL;DR: There is a closed test realm with testers who are not paid for their time. As I understand from the scarce info, you actually get kicked out if you play around instead of reporting bugs. At random times there are invitations to join this. Please wiki the “test krewe”. Anything else you don’t understand?

CPU or GPU?

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: marnick.4305

marnick.4305

Upgrading the bottleneck is most important. It’s no use driving a Ferrari down a mud road, but driving a tractor on German autobahns won’t get you anywhere either.

For GW2, after a threshold, the GPU isn’t important anymore. That goes for all MMO games basically.
- GPU until you can run on highest. My 2 years old graphics card manages this just fine
- CPU for rendering the world. LA requires a big CPU because it is a layered town and you can see far away.
- RAM for players. Most people don’t realize this, but the amount of people you can show on your screen is directly proportional to the amount of RAM you have. As such it’s the most cost-efficient way to improve MMO performance. In WoW, doubling my RAM made all the difference in Ironforge between 3fps and solid 40fps.

I recommend at least 4gb RAM and any decent modern CPU for having a playable experience, with a graphics card up to taste.

in Account & Technical Support

No. Upgrading to SSD makes you loading times shorter and I’d strongly recommend doing so, but it won’t make your fps higher.

My i7 PC with traditional BIOs now boots in 27 seconds from button to windows 8. A friend of mine has EUFI and boots into Windows in less than 7 seconds.

In your case I’d look for any dell laptop. The newest intel hd generation runs GW2 just fine on lowest, me and my brother both have an i5 laptop with those specs. For under 1000 euros you should be able to find a very decent upgrade.

Will they ever bring Abbadon back?

in Lore

marnick.4305

Actually, we know a sixth Elder Dragon exists. This is a proven fact.

The question is whether or not it’s still alive, if it’s awake, and if not awake and is alive, when will it awake. A second question is whether or not there are more than six Elder Dragons, as the “sextant of swallowers” (aka six Elder Dragons) comes from jotun history, and as far as we know, they never went far out from continental Tyria (on the other hand, forgotten and possibly dwarves did – to Cantha (for both) and Elona (for forgotten)).

Without going into far fetched discussions about myths, but Greek and Roman myths mention a pantheon of gods living on Mount Olympus in trustworthy sources yet nothing ever found there. Furthermore the Jotun wouldn’t be the first to mistranslate a heptant (7) into sextant (6). Classic mistake, especially with such a nice alliteration to induce the mistake.

I’m joking a bit but you see where I’m going. Proof of the pudding is in the eating and the Jotun myth doesn’t hold any more value to me (as a human character) than Olympic gods hold to me as a modern day pastafari.

Also your comment still doesn’t address the issue where people try to fit the gods with the dragons without any real reason (except for 6 equals 6 if an obscure myth from a lesser race is taken for granted).

The real reason to go back to old areas is because those are fun. Queensdale is a nice area to hang around and Ascalon carries memories in its own right. Being in the norn area is fun because I’m always keeping an eye on Shatterer and Jormag clocks.

Making money isn’t an issue. Copper sells good and spawns abundantly. This makes for a consistent gold source not tied to RNG. Low tier activators can be converted into CCC and then into sturdy picks and black lion keys. Karma rewards are OK in those areas either and most events can be solo’d (or I can carry alts).

Granted, none of those things is “the best”, except for the fun part And for some reason or another, fun is the core value in a game for me.

There’s only 1 thing arena.net could do to make gem prices more transparent and that’s adding buy and sell orders instead of the current exchange. (although I think the price would skyrocket to 3-4g / 100gems)

On the other hand, don’t forget arena.net needs money to run the game. If you whine about high gem prices, that basically means less people are supporting the game compared to the people who want to play it! The good thing here is that every exchange has another side and you’re free to lower the gem price by converting some of your cash into ingame goodies.

If you were going to create an index ...

marnick.4305

Does anyone not living in Belgium actually know what a consumer index is?

I would simply use gold-to-gems. Gems have an extremely constant value given they’re technically backed by the three most important reserve currencies (pounds, euros and dollars). The amount of gold you get for gems directly translates to the value people give to gold. The prices of all goods in the game are directly related to this and because of that every good in the game can be expressed in euros.

By neglecting the inflation of the euro (because income levels tend to follow inflation on average) the gold to gem reflects the ingame inflation.

Even then, the game is technically still in launch phase so any estimates of inflation are worthless until the game is at least 1 year old and the market matures.

People complain about gems being expensive (for gold) and because of that, they can’t buy the gem store stuff. But these people forget a very important thing. Gem prices rising means the entire game becomes less expensive, money-wise, for time-limited high-income people, the exact people keeping the servers alive.

Yes, I fall under this myself. When I get myself 2000 gems, I get over 20 gold which about doubles the entire amount of money I managed to save up since launch. With increasing gem prices that conversion becomes even better.

OK some things can’t be afforded through gold anymore but the truth is, this gem conversion was intended for the time-limited player to catch up on hardcore gold farmers who don’t want to spend real money. The current gem trend reflects that. If gem stuff is too expensive gold-wise, feel free to support the game instead. Gems are cheap when calculating from a RL money point of view.

First you guys should realize most games don’t have collection tabs at all. So just having those is already saving up tons of bag space. The deposit collectibles feature is unheard of. Besides that, ongoing development is required but to an extent.

Bosses compared to GW1

in Suggestions

First off, Guild Wars 1 didn’t have many bossfights worth mentioning, apart from Rotwing, Shiro and the EotN Mountain Heart. These weren’t even very high quality.

The only regular bosses with difficulty were eles and ritualists (double damage) and monk boss with monk henchmen in hard mode.

Second, in almost every MMO melee does more damage than ranged and GW2 is no different. This is to offset part of the kiting. In stationary MMOs this means melee is overpowered, in GW2 this means melee is pretty balanced. Anyways, ranged is always an option, even for warriors and guardians.

Third, bosses do a lot of damage. The way to avoid this is either l2p or waypoint camp. Your choice, both work.

Do you want this program to make changes?

in Account & Technical Support

Windows 7 has several different admin levels. Logging in as admin only means you’re allowed to accept admin changes. These setting can be tweaked. Any of the following works to a degree, make a combination that works best for you:

1/ Make a folder c:\Guild Wars 2\. This is not as secure as the program files folder.

2/ Start > User icon (above your user name) > User Account Control > put the slider to the lowest setting > reboot PC

3/ Right click Guild Wars shortcut > Properties > Compatibility > Run as Administrator

4/ Right click shortcut > Run as administrator

Option 1+4 is usually enough. Option 2 is hitting the problem with a sledgehammer and making an inherently insecure system more insecure, although I really recommend doing it when your PC is not critical (which means does not contain multi-million projects for your job).
Option 3 is also OK but the admin level you give is not the same as option 1+4 (I know….) because shortcuts can be hijacked and admin shortcuts are a target.

In any case, if you make your PC more insecure, be sure to up the security on your GW2 account by adding two factor authentication!

Mouse losing focus -right click to turn not working [Merged]

I have the same issue. Specs:
- 2 monitors (seems to be the primary reason for the problem)
- currently a razer naga although I’ve used everything from logitech to white label garbage to laptop touch pads
- tried under xp, win7 and win8, x64 and x86. Makes no difference
- tried on an old p4 pc a dell laptop, an acer laptop and a brand new i7 pc. Makes no difference

My observations:
- Guild Wars 1 also had these problems
- Issue 1: Mouse moves out of the main windows, shows briefly on the other monitor and blinks back. If, in the meanwhile, you click, game minimizes.
- Issue 2: Right click doesn’t work outright when pointing at an NPC or Player. Turning in LA, WvW or, god forbid, the Mad Clocktower is nigh impossible

Trials and tribulations:
- right mouse button works in every other program. I did many tests on the desktop, word and other games
- run as administrator doesn’t change a thing
- playing full screen is the worst because of minimize. Playing full-screen windowed is manageable because you “just” lose focus.
- updating drivers, os or what have does not help in the slightest. This is a Guild Wars problem.

I support these kind of problems as my job, my income depends on finding such problems (and forwarding them to relevant developers). This problem is real and verified. If you can’t take my word for this, feel free to check my credentials. I’m connected to Rubi Bayer on linkedin.

Teamviewer is available to conclusively show the problems in real time.

The issue is back with a vengeance… I’ll keep trying to fix it, but only because I love GW2 so much. Any other game would have been deleted already. It is my job to solve other people’s problems, in my free time I’d rather use the stuff I paid good money for.

I’m 100% sure I don’t do anything wrong because frankly, It’s my puppy job to make sure windows runs at industrial quality. My home PC runs better than most computers in an average IT university classroom.

A Lore based reason for level/attribute caps

in Lore

Posted by: marnick.4305

marnick.4305

Levels are a completely arbitrary construct of rules. The true reason they exist is because in tabletop games it wasn’t really efficient to change your stats after every fight. It was easier to keep a tally of experience and give yourself a stat bump every X xp. The first computer RPGs borrowed this tried and tested tabletop system and no one ever asked questions about whether powerful computers “maybe” allow for a more interesting form of progression.

Levels as a game system are outdated by several decades. However removing them is a big risk which not many companies are willing to make. Instead they add levels but make them irrelevant. For example, in GW1 the level cap was just there as an aesthetic. In Diablo 2 your character should be complete around lvl 85 which could be reached in a day, anything beyond was only bragging. Fable had its own implementation which still encouraged grind. In GW2 the level curve is so flat it may as well have been completely scrapped. Other games try other things. The core issue is that no one dared to completely remove levels and XP as a combat system yet.

Lore Book or RPG?

in Lore

marnick.4305

Well, my take on a GW2 RPG would at least need following compents:
- self sufficiency. The coolest parts in table top rpg is when the group is split up. GW2 supports that.

- the cross profession combos. I think these will be very, very important in a table top setting. At least you will take time to work them out compared to the online version

- a big focus on weapons. That’s more of a personal thing, but I like how weapons define your character. The DnD Paladin always had the quest of obtaining the Holy Avenger, other classes didn’t nearly have that personal quest.

- horizontal characters. In DnD your character becomes vastly more powerful over time, in WFRP this is far more subtle.

enough with the WoW crap >.>

Ye. Besides, Dervish in essence was nothing more than a whammo with built-in aoe and therefor the quintessential noob profession. The OP just wanted a paladin =)

Best GW1 profession not in the game atm is smiting monk. GW2 is the ultimate smiting boon.

So because my opinion differs from you, I am a WoW noob right?

No, you’re a WoW player (not noob) because you ask for stuff that failed in WoW and was heavily patched through successive expansions.

Sorry I really enjoyed my Dervish in GW1, the whole scythe AoE thing made it awesome. I know it was a glorified wammo but still it was fun to play and use Avatar of balth+all the weapon enchants…and an anime-esque feel to it.

Regardless of what your skill level in WoW is, the Whammo is the quintessential noob build in GW1, and I never though different of Dervishes. I’m not referring to you, I’m only talking about a profession with built in aoe, survival and high armor + 25 hp. Seriously… the dervish profession was a joke. Concept was great, implementation was a bit of a puppy. That’s probably why dervish needed such a huge overhaul.

On the other hand, dervish being such an easy profession pulled many people in the game later on. That’s not necessarily a bad thing because it sure kept my favourite game alive for longer. People without UAX couldn’t quickly build a good toon unless it was a paragon or dervish. They had far less skill bloat.

This whole dragon equals gods is just you guys trying to find patterns where in fact there are none. We don’t even know for sure whether an extant sixth dragon exists, and there is absolutely no lore linking dragons to the gods. The only thing here is the fact that six equals six, so the 6 gods obviously have to align with the 5 ED because one single line in the entire game mentions a possible 6th ED??? To me that sounds just stupid.

Sometimes two things can be the same number without being related A square has 4 sides, so does a pyramid. Both are entirely unrelated.

This issue is usually due to old router/modem hardware, they usually can’t handle more than a baseline of connections. The increase in parallel traffic in the last decade usually means old hardware isn’t up to par anymore. I would strongly recommend updating both, especially when you have more than 2 pcs on the network. At my place this helped tremendously.

Also you should double check IP conflicts.

Protip, buy yourself stacks of t6 right before the wintersday update. Bans happen in waves as you may know and those usually coincide with updates. Bots are illegal but you can still profit from them in legal ways. Buying from bots is actually a gold sink since both bots and gold buyers get banned inevitably.

I like OP’s idea, although I don’t think it’s necessary to remove current MF gear, just to add MF slot upgrades to all non-MF exotics in the game. Imho all upgrades should be based on the stuff you try to farm:
- +5% for gear => base charm + 3 pieces of exotic gear
- +5% gold => base charm + 3×5 icy lodestones (1g/piece)
- +5% karma => base charm + 3×5 obsidian (2100 karma/piece)
- extra xp => base charm + crystals (buyable for xp)

I support such an update. It’s actually the horizontal progression people would want.

Any luck on second screen support? I would very much like to have a map open 24/7 on my second screen, if only to view events (pve) and combat (wvw). In fact I’d almost buy a second account for the wvw part but that doesn’t fix the pve problems.

Also, larger radius for viewing events. Zone-wide would be much appreciated.

Lore Book or RPG?

I would LOVE a lore-book. I already read the 2 gw novels and enjoyed them thoroughly.
I’d buy a lore-book in the blink of an eye.
Rp is also something I enjoy, although I don’t do it often. However I’m always interested in different worlds and history.

Even if you don’t RP, rulebooks often have plenty of lore in them. The mechanics behind RPGs are also very interesting as they shed light on how the world feels.

EG: DND has a lot of mechanics to generate cities. Rolling a few cities is rather interesting to see what shows up. On the other hand Warhammer Fantasy RP has a lot of mechanics about disabilities and insanity which shows how harsh that world really is. All settings have gods and the mechanics of interacting with gods also have a lot of lore to them. Lastly, racial traits tend to go beyond the combat only, as such a lot of background is provided to properly RP said race. In the real world, the campaign book for Memoir ’44 is really interesting because it gives a rather clear view on World War 2 without being a 600 page tome. I bought that book without any intent of ever playing the campaigns.

Add 2 and 2 together and rulebooks contain a puppyload of story.
