I agree with OP. The worst that can happen to an MMO player is to have their gear deleted. A level increase does exactly that.
My ex- and current girlfriends all had my passwords except that of GW2 for exactly that reason. I don’t want an angry ex in my account. Me and my brother had quite some fights and stuff got destroyed but never, ever, did we touch each other’s characters. Chris threatened to do exactly that which I fear most.

And that’s how an international debt crisis starts. Not by the companies allowing a gamble, but by consumers who don’t realize borrowed money (Credit Cards) won’t suffice to cover all the pretty things forever. Sooner or later someone has to pay for your want.

Bottom line. Don’t spend money you can’t afford to lose on a gamble. The gamble was the game, the thrill of unboxing. If you would be guaranteed a top tier item, it wouldn’t be a gamble?

On the other hand, good for your spouse. You realize you don’t like gambling so hopefully it doesn’t become an addiction Make a monthly budget for GW2 gems and don’t spend a gem over that. A good father always budgets his pleasure along with the needs of his family.

1c undercutting is destroying competition

in Black Lion Trading Co

marnick.4305

Go to any stock exchange and ask to bid $200.01 on a $201 stock and they’ll laugh at you. As stocks rise so to do the allowed bidding units. Penny stocks (0.01-0.10) allow half cent bids, while dollar stocks allow 1c bids. $50 stocks allow 5c bids and so on- and so on.

Because stocks exchanges realised, long ago, that efficient systems require limits that don’t encourage destructive behavior.

I strongly recommend you to go to a stock market and place a 200.01 bid, or even a 200.005 bid. It happens all the time. That one cent is exactly where the big money is made.

There’s no problem here except for markets with low volume. Even a high transaction volume market at high prices doesn’t have any problems with this undercutting.

Voice software mandatory for explorable dgs?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: marnick.4305

marnick.4305

They are very challenging, but once you get them down you can do them ungeared. That’s the biggest difference with other MMOs. Also they’re only 5 man so the voice chat is not so much about commanding but more about helping.

Basically, you’re required to learn the tactics one way or another. If you do that with voice and a guild group, you’ll learn them fast. If you do it over chat with pugs, it’ll be slow. If you keep your eyes open and prepare to learn, you’ll learn faster either way.

Whether or not voice chat is required is up to your group to decide, and up to you to join such groups. Not required, strongly recommended at first though although I’ve learned plenty of explorables without a single voice word.

I have the same feeling. Big progression was made in the last months. Lost Shores was a bad move but apart from that, the game only got better and better. Even Lost Shores was mostly good except for ascended items and the associated bad communication. Fractals and the Cove are both very nice areas, I just wish a.net hadn’t puppied on the ascended puppy.

When I compare to WoW launch and Aion launch, this game definitely improved, whereas wow only got worse every patch after 1.08. In Aion I didn’t play in the first 2 weeks (queue) and when I finally started playing the game was already dead. In vanilla WoW I was a warlock, in Aion Spiritmaster and now engineer. I sure have a thing for bugged and troubled classes and let me tell you one thing, compared to other games, engineer is working just fine.

So for all the things that are wrong with GW2, it still is the best MMO launch as of yet. Compliments to a.net and good luck on the incremental improvements to the game.

how to get karma fast?

in Players Helping Players

Doing events is the main source. The karma booster in gem store is pretty cheap so feel free to use them. Running dungeons nets a fair amount and merely doing the daily rewards a nice 4.5k (on top of the event karma). Joining a WvW zerg will give you quite some too.

Save up any karma consumables and mass use them under influence of +karma stuff and you’ll get even more karma out of your liquid karma.

Doing the monthly, if you have time, gives you a huge 45k karma.

Don't feel like making weapons

There’s nothing wrong with working slowly towards a weapon you want. I started working on my legendary last month and it would probably take another 6 months before I’m finished at the rate I’m going. I don’t mind taking so long because I don’t need it now so I won’t be hardcore grinding to get it. I’m only doing stuff when I feel like it.

Which is exactly what I’m doing, but going for a mere skin would give me a big setback on the upcoming power increase. Feels like wasted time in advance. This was so different in GW1. Sad quaggan.

My opinion on the Mystic forge

in Crafting

marnick.4305

For someone who has played many other MMOs and RPGs you obviously haven’t played Diablo?

Let me explain. The GW2 devs originally made Diablo 2. In Diablo 2 you had this marvelous thing called the Horadric Cube. Most recipes in the Horadric Cube were based on a gamble for very, very expensive items. If lucky, you’d get a huge return on investment, if unlucky, you wouldn’t get squat.

The Mystic Forge has the exact same function. Unless you have a puppyload of gold to burn, DO NOT touch it. The Mystic Forge will be on its best once the game is around a year old and people have the disposible income to start gambling big time. In a year, it’ll be the most popular feature in the game for veterans.

Do not forget that the Horadric Cube had a few easy well known cheaper recipes too, mainly regarding upgrading gems and runes and making upgrades. See a pattern?

Remember how GW1 looked at launch. Now look at the current state of the game.

It’s called power creep, if you only buff, in a short time all skills will be too powerful which leads to huge problems. Even without buffs and only nerfs, power creep starts to happen because players become better.

Nerfing a powerful skill is usually better than buffing weak ones.

Don't feel like making weapons

in Crafting

Posted by: marnick.4305

marnick.4305

There’s a list of beautiful weapons on the wiki, that can be forged in the mystic forge. Many of them seem to be a very good alternative to legendaries, many are very, very expensive. I’d love to go for Ilya+Mad Moon on my engineer. There’s just one huge problem…….

I can’t, for any good reason, go for this horizontal progression. If I don’t go for legendary or ascended weapons, sooner or later I will start lagging behind on the gear curve. Yes, at the moment it’s shallow, but at least a legendary will keep its relative power.

Why is this a problem? I’m a time limited player. I can only afford one of those weapons before summer, and if I don’t go for the legendary, I will regret it one of the future patches. I sincerely need this legendary just to beat the incoming threadmill. I hate the prospect of this happening. For all the cool skins implemented in the last patches, I will get none. It makes the GW1 fan in me cry.

Please fix this. All skin weapons need ascended status or they’re just worthless to normal players.

What’s also very nice … the blue completetion bars get me into the atmosphere even more. I’m going for 100% on my alt and world completion fitting into the season is a good thing!

I also looked through the patch notes, seems like BLC is finally going somewhere while fractals gets some much needed changes. All in all, I support the current patch. BRB buying gems I buy gems for good content. One look at Wintersday is enough to buy gems for (don’t compare to Lost Shores, that patch made me vomit)

Laziest (non-crafting) way to level up?

If you want an easy time, I can only recommend to complete areas that are at least 10 levels too low for you. It’ll be mind numbing but also slower so ….

Your post doesn’t make sense to me. Most people leave gold sellers out of the equation when debating anything about the gem prices because frankly, they’re irrelevant.

Yes you could buy theoretically gold from these bots. However the cost is the following: they hack your account, strip it of valuables and steal it for botting. In case this doesn’t happen, you will get perma-banned since gold buying goes against the EULA, you will not get an appeal. As such, you lose your entire account either way.

Either that, or you just buy the gems without putting your account at serious risk. Your choice.

optional step 0) buy yellows for every slot to get started. For less than a gold you can get full rare armor. While not best in slot will give you enough stats to start doing dungeons/orr/southsun/whatever.

Prices for lvl80 rares have gone up quite a lot recently, due to the value of ectoplasms. Don’t expect a full set for less than a gold, it’s actually close to 2G at the moment. But yeah, a full rare set isn’t that much less viable than a full exotic set. Exotics are overrated.

Everyone could have about 2g when reaching lvl80. Otherwise, just craft. Yellows don’t need much materials and if you’ve been gathering you can have some guildie make a set of random gear.

On the Sixth Elder Dragon and its corruption

in Lore

Posted by: marnick.4305

marnick.4305

@ marnick
That is entirely possible, but I don’t think so. Anet has stated quite a few times that they don’t like closing doors. And having Mordremoth dead off the bat kind of does that. However, as proven by Zhaitan, even when dead an Elder Dragon’s influence/corruption remains and might still be able to be spread.

That’s all I’m saying. Leave a hundred open doors, and close a few and open a dozen others when you make more content. A.net is pretty good at retconning these open doors, but there’s plenty that were never addressed and will never be addressed. That’s why I don’t put too much stock in 1 skill with the name Mordremoth. Could be anything or could be nothing at all. I surely wouldn’t directly link it to an implied dead 6th dragon, but that’s just because there’s a hundred other open plotlines.

The only thing I read out of this is: There may or may not be more dragons when the game is still popular in 5 years. To me, that sounds like a good position to have a sustainable game.

I played since launch, thanks though. Would you kindly point out the errors in my post for me (as I am 100% positive that they don’t exist)?

You refer to the luxon settlement as if it was a thing starting from day 1. It wasn’t, it was first implemented nearly a year later. You refer to the Mursaat as being in Elona and coming back in EotN. They weren’t, you completely mixed up Mursaat and Margonites, completely distinct beings who WERE NOT in EotN. The few mursaat in EotN were a fanserving retcon as they were actually implied to be extinct after the Titan quests. You made several big anachronous errors in the WiK storyline. You also seem to mix up Xunlai and Zaishen. Xunlai never implied any expansions, and none were based around the Xunlai. Zaishen were only there for PVP and don’t really play a big role in lore.

You also don’t seem to understand how adding Elona was a retcon to existing content, not a forward hint starting from Prophecies. No one actually expected Elona until the elonian mirror quest. The Ghostly Hero was never implied to be Turai Ossa until he was affirmed so in the Nightfall booklets. You would have known all this if you played during release.

Stories of odd creatures and a far north don’t imply anything either. That’s a given. The bladeridge mountains do imply that “something” is on the other side. You may as well predict that a coin always ends up either heads or tail. The Great Destroyer in EotN, again, was a retcon and a very bad one to boot. They needed something in a short time and the Great Destroyer was there for the serving.

None of these things ever implied an add on. The Salma quest was added a month after release btw, you should remember, it was the first new PVE content. I’m very happy WiK and WoC came, but all those tidbits were never important until AFTER they became important. Because of that, nothing matters until it matters. Also, your errors are blatant and I don’t believe you were there on day 1 because several of your statements are blatantly wrong concerning the game in release state.

I’m closing the discussion here for two reasons: I don’t want to get infracted for saying the truth and I don’t like pointing out how other people make themselves look like a fool. There is a wiki, before you make any claims, please check your facts. Most of the things you mention are retcons, and were never red herrings.

Remembers me of this one client who told me to go to a 3 hour project at 16:55 on Friday evening. I very kindly told him it wasn’t going to happen and oh btw I’m going on holiday for 2 weeks starting next monday. BUT I PAY YOU he said. Well that doesn’t entitle him either : D

Economy Not Meant for the Casual Gamer?

Just think about it. The amount of time you spend in guild wars 2, would it be considered a casual time investment in any other hobby, say for example football, tennis, drawing, going out? Most likely you play about an hour a day. Name any other past time with that time commitment that would classify such a commitment as “casual”?

Being hardcore in MMO games is not possible unless you’re neither student nor working. That’s a cold, hard fact. Don’t fret over it. We still have the option of having the “hardcore” work for us by buying gems, and seeing how the gem prices are on the rise, the casual position becomes ever more comfortable. For me it now takes less than an hour of work to do the equivalent of a week of grinding. Not bad imho.

Spoiler alert: About the last quest..

While implementation of this quest might not be that well, I strongly recommend doing the Arah story. It is a very enjoyable dungeon with interesting mechanics. The killing of Zaithan isn’t too challenging (to say the least) but on the other hand, sit back and enjoy completing the story. It is a moment to cherish and I agree to the way they implemented it.

Is the Personal Story necessary?

The first part of the story is very well written and intriguing. I really like the human,
Charr and Sylvari stories. Also the orders are pretty nice, especially the Whispers (apples!). Puppies hit the fan when every well-written character commits suicide so the extremely bland Trahearne can steal the spotlight.

What happened, and arena.net confirmed this at one point, was that at a certain moment the last half was rushed and didn’t go through iterations like the first part.

I want to finish it but I just can’t be puppied. Not only is the story unoriginal, to me Trahearne is actually repulsive to the point I’d rather not play the PS.

Ascalon similarities to Rome

in Lore

Yeah, that’s true. To be honest I think it’s because they’re not that big on empire in the incorporation sense. It suited the Romans to let the locals do what had been working for them before – less admin work for the new Roman rulers. But the charr are more likely to exterminate people in lands they take; it’s not like non-charr get incorporated into the Legions! And there’s not really a role for non-charr citizens in (current) charr society.

Not for every culture, and not necessarily the best allies either. Divide et impera was the way to establish rule through local customs. Play them out against each other. But that doesn’t apply either unless you count grawl vs humans.
