It’s honestly not that big a deal. This stealth will mostly be used for getting in the second attack (Maul) without being interrupted, or for running away with (Swoop). Besides, 3 seconds is not that much at all. What makes the Thief so good at stealth, is its ability to chain stealth skills together, which of curse, the Ranger can not do.

When you read into the patch, what’s more interesting is actually that, getting stealth guarantees a critical hit on your next hit, with the trait Remorseless. This could, potentially, make direct damage Rangers compete with burst Thieves.

I don’t think it will compete with burst thieves, as a weapon swap is also included. You can use this with maul only every 28 seconds or so. It was intended for the lonbow I think, and at 30 points in Marksmanship it will reset with remorseless and crit on the next attack (granted it hits). It adds nice play, but don’t think it is anything OP or gamebraking.

It is, thanks to the june update, that removed some of the damage from pets, and basically gave it to the longbow.

I agree with you 50% on that.

Guaranteed crit every 12 secs that also applies vulnerability. It sicks the pet on your target, while you go stealth. This is really awesome!

I highly doubt a solo ranger is going to hold any significant reinforcements from reaching the zerg.

Depends on the servers I guess. On my trapper ranger I could hit and run yaks in front of keeps even. Swoop in, entangle, traps, spam some more condis, and then get out. 1 yak doesn’t matter, but solo roamers can do a lot of hurt this way. I mostly saw this on the recieving end. Having towers close to garri that are without supply for an hour means a bigger time frame for someone to cap it quicker. I know on the higher tiers this won’t happen, but 1 more reason for me to stay in tier 7.

I wouldn’t say its the number that makes it less probable though, I’d say the roamer being a ranger does. On a thief its so much easier because of stealth and shadowsteps. You need specific builds to stop a good thief from taking your yak.

Edit: Sorry, misread your post. Yeah 1 player won’t stop 10 from reaching the zerg.

Grasping Vines & Entangle in PVP

You can also get out with skills that have some movement involved, like serpent’s strike, at least I remember getting out with that.

As your weapons of choice are power weapons, you will be probably better off with RoA. You can take entangle for taking camps though. Get the npcs in one place and use entangle. Should make things easier. Most players will straight up evade the whole thing, or get out quickly.

Is there a reason purpose for this thread at all? Why do you ask a question just to state, “well I have an oppinion and you won’t be able to convince me otherwise”?

I don’t care how anyone tries to justify it but you’ll never make me believe a solo roamer from the 3rd server in T1 will influence the outcome.

Well, “a solo roamer” won’t make a difference, but a bunch of them will.

Well its a good thing you decided to do so because now you have a better understanding of where the crying is coming from.

I rolled a thief, running s/p sb with knight armor, everything else zerker. Its redicilous how much defense a thief gets with stealth, evade, blind and teleport. I don’t think its less OP then before though. I deal lots of damage, and can get away. I played it in wvw only, and I still think thieves in wvw are over the top. I know its a different deal in dungeons in pvp though.

This build isn’t new.

Yea It is, As i said it was isired on other Builds but there are some diferences.

No it really is not. I use to run almost this exact build with 1 trait difference. I didn’t use spotter.

I know everyone wants to think they came up with something new and exciting, but This build is neither new or exciting. I have actually seen this build posted several times since I have been playing.

20/30/20… Is not new. The traits you took in this build are not new. The weapon set you use is not new. Neither is using Rampage crit/condi gear.

The name is new though…

I am all for coming up with idea’s but please don’t take a Big Mac put it in a new box, and call it a Big Bob expecting that people will think you really came up with something new.

I (and many many others on these forums) have run about every combo you can think of just to see what happens. I have run spirit, crit/condi, power/crit, power/tough, tough/condi, bunker, and even rolled BM for about 5 min before I had to run to the bathroom and vomit… I just felt ill and dirty for rolling that build for even those 5 min. Mostly because it requires next to 0 skill to play.

Again Its really good to see people posting builds, but there is nothing, and I mean nothing original about this build.

Yes, trapper is great for taking camps, and so is greatsword. Do you want conid damage, or power build though? If you’re fine with condi damage, try this. Alternately you could go with dwayna runes for some nice regen, and putting 10 points from MM into NM. Not sure how much heal that would be though. I don’t use the trap traits anymore, there are far better options. You could take superior eart runes as well, my only problem with geomancy is that it gets bugged in wvw. It works again if you relog, but if you stacked 25 stack of corruption, its a pain in the back.

Best part of that video was, we got told Zoose team SOAC Red just lost to all ranger team, then we face Zoose right after his lose and beat them rather easy.

That’s when the rage gets good lol, I believe he goes on for a good 30 mins of crying.

Can you link me to it? I need some good laughs, our server got played by the RNG gods again.

1. using s+t/a+d together with geomancy sigils allows for much greater condition pressure than shortbow so using shortbow with apothecary gear is a problem atleast to some extent.

2. Birds are kitten, kitten and garbage all they ever do is flippety flop around and then once in a blue moon actually attack it’s using a bird that is the problem more than having enough buffs on pet a cat does not have this problem even if moving targets is still troublesome for pets.

3. Dwayna runes are worth using at 0 healing power aslong as you have a solid amount of toughness to increase the value of the regen buff then it is always good for pvp.

Sorry, didn’t express myself clearly, I didn’t use shortbow, only mentioned of cause of the patch. I was using s/t a/d, but I like gs better, so I chose a/t gs. I’ll test how much regen ticks for with different gear compsition. I have 2k toughness right now, but my ragid trinkets have rabid crests, so the settler trinkets will be better there. Prolly gonna change the armor back piece by piece for rabid and see how it goes. I’m running River drake and wolf now, nice for taking camps. Still got killed with 2k armor and 1.2k healing power by some pesky thieves Today. Its funny ANet nerfed pet damage and shorbow range isntead of giving some counters to stealth spam, but thats that.

Thanks for the replies guys. My problem wasn’t shortbow though, but buffing my pet to deal damage. It felt like without my traps I don’t have enough condition pressure on my targets. I could survive a lot, which was a great change from running all rabid without Emphatic bond and stun breaks. I ended up changing back to a/t, gs, with 2 traps and SotH. I ran into an engie yesterday who wasn’t even hit by my pet I think. It was painful to watch my raven circle around the place even with RoA on. Maybe I will just remove the 30 from BM and get a settler/apothecary weapon, as I still ran with my rabid weaps. I could take those 30 points into MM or Skirmishing instead and run 2 canines instead. How much healing power makes Dwayna runes still a good option? I don’t want to be indestructible just to troll people, but being durable is awesome. I was thinking of smuggling my rabid trinkets back in, but don’t want to end up with 400 healing power sitting on my apothecary gear without it being useful. Did you guys experiment with that? Any suggestions are most welcome.

The whole spin to use thing is clumsy too – in the tests I did it was barely faster than just running straight.

Sad but true, someone running with swiftness gets as far as a ranger with sword #2. GS3 is great though.

It is possible to pewpew from distance, but you’re much too vulnerable, and it takes too much time. Projectiles are also easily blocked/reflected. Traps are still awesome.

I just made myself a set of apothecary armor, and got the settler trinkets and dwayna runes and…. playing a BM in roaming seems just sooooo boring. I played full rabid trapper with undead runes, and killing anyone just seem such a chore. I admit its survivable, but still. I’d rather play my a/t, gs trapper with no stun break and die a thousand times. At least that way I have some nice condi burst, and can kick some kitten . But then again, maybe I’m doing something wrong. Was running raven with 0/0/30/10/30. Must have been nice with the pre nerf jag and shortbow.

I’ll sum up the video for you. He uses Swoop, Hornet Sting and Monarch’s Leap. A lot. There are a few fights in there but at least half of it is Hornet Sting and Monarch’s Leap.

He has two swords equipped, did you expect him to run around and spam 1?

To be honest though, it’s the balance team that’s the big issue, not zooze. The balance team at ANet is the one actively trying to ruin the game on which others have worked hard and put all their time and effort into.

Well, the balance team (who only looks at sPvP), together with the interface team (camera view blocked by your own character, having to keep the right mouse button pressed to look around, no cursor causing you to shoot into the ground when losing your target, completely dropping your target when someone stealths, no possible keyboard shortcuts for several of our pet functions, etc) and the bug fix team (the wiki is littered with bug notes).

And they’re probably the same 2 guys, so highly overworked.

Take a deep breath and read again what you wrote. I’ve seen far worse in MMO balancing. We could be so much worse its not even funny. And to be frank, like I already wrote when the latest patch was released, they introduced 3-4 changes we asked for on the forums (evasive purity moved a tier lower, companion’s might fixed, spirit traits merged, longbow autoattack speed improved). Now I’m not saying that I’m happy with the patch, I think the SB range reduction was totally uncalled for, but to say that they have an agenda against rangers is being paranoid.

PLS man remove that now, i know it’s for the lulz but those devs might actually take you seriously and do that for real.

Ranger sword was never mentioned on any SOTG. Don’t think there is an issue with it, chillax. And trust me, the devs don’t need me to get ideas for a nerf. If it does happen, I will play my thief, and I don’t even use sword on my ranger. I consider myself a patient man, but my patience has limits too. He’s lvl69 already, and I have enough badges for him to buy a set of gear and weapons.

I just want to know – having watched the video from 1:54 – whether other rangers think the ranger is easy mode where you only need to spam 1 and are evading all the time?

I love it how they are 50 points up at the beginning and someone says, this is going easier then I thought, and 13 minutes in Zoose goes we need some points. Sounds like theye were over confident/didn’t know what just hit them. Some other bombshells:
“How do I deal with 1 spam?”
“We have to kill spirits every 2 seconds”
“F this game, necros and spirit rangers”

Nerfs incoming:
- Lynx now applies 1 second bleeds
- Sword damage is coming down, 1 of the evades are gone, cause its clearly the best weapon the ranger has (best damage, 66% evades on the skills), so we need the other weapons to look more viable

Pet Cemetery – Whenever your pet dies, The ghost of said pet will now follow the target who killed him for 15 seconds in an unwavering rage.

Does this mean the ghost will attack the killer? If so this sounds really overpowered. Some area effect when the pet dies maybe would be better. This way rangers could play around with this, like the Necro concept video of bone minions exploding. Rangers then could send their pets into the enemy zerg and get something out of their pet dying for a change. Or maybe if they just released their F2 effects in aoe, would be nice.

I would like to see a kamikaze hit squad with 3 rangers 30/10/0/0/30, knight/zerker LB/GS Riverdrake/Wolf, with healing spring, muddy terrain, QZ, LR, Entangle, and 2 thieves 30/x/30/x/x with poison sharing with Shadow refuge, Skale venom, Devourer venom, Basilisk venom hit the back side of a zerg with lightning breath, barrage and dancing daggers, or SB aa in case of thieves. That would be awesome. Its hard to get ranger tactics in a zerg though, when projectiles are so easily reflected, most zergs will have plenty of guardians/mesmers. And other classes are better close range, except maybe for engies and necros.

I hate immobilize. Even if Lighning reflex would remove that, it would be just another must have utility. Looking forward to Anets plan on active condition clearing, as Jon Sharp mentioned that is something he would like to see. However if you face an organized group of 5+ and they want to nail you down, they will.

Turns out greatsword is great for taking camps with trapper ranger. The evade on auto attack and the block are really great, as well as hilt bash for interrupting heals of the npcs. Aoe bleed on maul, auto-attack with sharpened edges and weaponswap. Than axe torch with pet swap quickness. Sweet. I ran this in small group as well, and did really good with it. Sadly Malicious trainnig doesn’t seem to work on canine fear/immobilize, so I took Companions might and fury on weaponswap instead. Currently run this

You did 12.7k damage in that one shot :O

It’s an uplvl that ran full glass. So not that impressive in that sense.

It is for a long range shot. If you can hit 4-5k hits on lvl80s that aren’t glass, that is good damage. Not a roamer build but still. Can you imagine a group of 5 rangers focus firing someong with that kind of auto attack? One day a zerg will come with glass rangers in the back line putting out a lot of hurt from 1000+ range. Just you wait.

Depends… but a trapper with rabid gear is good, yes. You can put out a lot of hurt with condi damage in full rabid with undead runes.

However the latest episodes’ .mp3, I believe Jindrake’s audio was WAY quieter than Batosai and the guests.

Similar problem with the patch notes episode for the engineers, I believe Asteria Rose’s audio was way quieter on the .mp3 than her co-host.

Just a little feedback.

Yeah but they corrected that the next time around, and checked if outgoing sound is fine.

So i've been trying Trap Build lately

2 questions for all with trap builds out here:

1. do you consider stun breaker a must or not? Given a trap ranger usually has high toughness and maybe a protection proc.
If so: which do you prefer?

2. How do you go for speed?
Some use signet of the hunt, some use warhorn. But neither of these actually synergise well with a trap build.
Warhorn has zero condition damage, at best it boosts crit procs.
Signet of the hunt takes up a trap slot, which means you can only use 2. While I find 3 sort of logical.

My own preferences:
1. Lighting reflexes because I do big WvW fights often.
2. warhorn for lack of better ways to get speed.

But I’m really curious how you solve these issues, and mostly: why you make the choices you make.

1. I’ve been playing trapper for a while now in wvw. I don’t use a stun break and neither do I use signet of renewal. Its not very survivable, thats for sure, can be very frustrating when you run into a bask venom thief. You need to condi-burst down your opponent before they kill you, at least thats how I play mine. Its not uncommon that I end up on the ground shortly after my opponent is downed. If its a 1v1 I win that one. If you run into an organizied group that utilizes stuns/conditions 1 condi clear, and 1 stun breaker won’t save your kitten . If you don’t have decent healing power and lots of regen you’re screwed anyway.

2. I use SotH to get around and if I see a fight incoming swap it for vipers nest.

I used to run s/t, a/d, recently been trying out shortbow with sharpened edges, sigil of earth with masters bond, companions might, rending attacks and a lynx. Opponents can go down quick, but cannot comment on it further, no proper pet UI, no visible pet condi damage for a while. In the past weeks I’ve been playing a/t gs. I dropped the trap traits altogether but shortbow was better to stack might on pet and bleed on my foe. I will need to change my traits around a bit. I am even considering droping 20 points from the skirmishing tree, and maybe adding carrion, and putting 10 into BM for quickness (traps have a 1 sec cast :/) but then I’ll need another pet instead of Lynx, maybe a canine, and will change Masters bond for commanding voice. And then I can take malicious training. Something like this. Instead of throwing traps, I aim to try and bring the traps to the opponent with swoop, or tell them to chill-axe and walk up to them. Its different, but seems fun so far.

Ranger zerg sounds fun. Imagine a pain train getting 5-10 entangled in their faces followed by traps. Not gonna change wvw, but would be a great laugh for sure.

That long range shot of 9250 is amazing, however I have mixed feelings about this thread. Being a ranger I have this evil ranger whispering from the back of my head how they will never buff damage on the longbow after this. No wonder Jon spoke of the flow of the LB instead of giving it a buff. They must have seen similar numbers during testing. I wonder what they have planned to open up more power builds for rangers though…

2b) The Ranger’s DPS support improves consistency, but it doesn’t really affect the top end of the number that much. That means that if you give someone Spotter and Fury (+27% crit chance) his damage output skyrockets, but he’s not going to see that, because his 4k crit still hits for 4k. Of course, he will be hitting that 4k crit twice as often, but that’s not immediately obvious.

Aren’t you exaggerating just a bit? If someone is running a zerker build he will not hit twice as many crits because of spotter. And other classes can provide fury as well. Spotter is a nice trait, but it doesn’t make rangers the “total powerhouse beast” you claimed.
