Sword like the gs is a defensive utility weapon. Autoattacking will get you killed because the animations are so long. There is no evade on the third hit of #1. You should autoattack only if youre not being attacked yourself, for example when crippling a runner for your mates.
If youre power/crit based you should be doing your dps mostly with the SB otherwise youre doing it wrong. This is why im saying the sword is appealing only to those with a bit of experience. It’s a supplemental dps weapon mostly a utility one, something that people dont understand. Gs is the same.
(edited by nerva.7940)
Sword is only used by experienced rangers, which are a rare breed. Most people dont stick with the prof to appreciate having 2 evades on a low cd in addition to a disengage. 90% of sword users dont even bother to disable the autoattack.
If the developers need feedback on pets in dungeons, We’re in more trouble then we thought.
Personally I’ve gone through just about every explorable mode without my pet dying… Granted I have 30pts in BM, so that may be why.
PS: I use drakes, fire and reef, or a fern wolf+ Moa/Drake combo and have no problem either way, and YES I keep my pet on the boss/mob for well over 80% of the fight, with a few exceptions.
TA Patch 1 I think it is, if you teleport inside the shield part, it’ll auto kill your pet, if you swtich pets while inside, it also auto kills your pet.
My pets die in the dungeons, not a whole lot since i’m 30 BM also, but they die enough that its annoying as hell.
Fractals past 10 start to get really annoying on them as well.
Double digit fractals might as well remove pets altogether since they will tank nothing but the ground and make killing the Maw take even longer because the kitten thing targets your pet which obviously accomplishes nothing for the team.
The fact that a dev who claims to play the class doesn’t know this is just silly and furthers my theory that they just don’t play the class at all.
i think they all just play the game at a much lower level than most of us. like, Robert seems satisfied gimping his group by running some sort of evasion tank condition ranger, which to me is an indication that actual players need to be consulted more.
lol arena healers, probably the worst idea ive ever heard on these silly forums. the lack of holy trinity is actually working out for the game very nicely. the only issue is bunker imbalance, i.e. guards and eles being the strongest. every prof should have a viable bunker spec, and the bunker needs to be slightly nerfed so they have less condition cleanses. condition specs should be a hard counter to the bunker playstyle, which simply isnt the case now.
so far things arent promising at all. they dont seem to have a clue about what’s actually going on with pets in higher level content and wvw.
I tend to run a condition build using shortbow and sword\dagger, and focus on being supportive and holding aggro while keeping a steady output of DPS through conditions.
/facepalm.
and how are rangers stronger than any other prof in open world pve? what does that even mean? who cares about open world pve? rangers are broken in higher level dungeons and wvw.
good dps until someone looks at you funny and you asplode. for better results, try Soldier’s and Knight’s gear combo.
(edited by nerva.7940)
i responded to you on Guru forums. great vid.
and people just need to stop trying to play their ranger as glass cannon until we get decent utilities. or theyre gonna be in for a world of heartbreak when some mouthbreathing thief 2-shots them.
with a few precise buffs to spirits, longbow and pets, the rangers could become valued in wvw. we have good dueling specs, good mobility and CC specs, and good skirmishing specs. we just lack what really matters: a good group spec.
will we get these buffs? most definitely not for a while. JP thinks LB is fine. spirit buffs have been atrocious and completely out of touch with reality. and apparently, the lead dungeon designer didnt have a clue pets were fodder in all dungeons (similarly large wvw engagements).
Scouting for ranger? Interesting, but ranger can`t run away if he would find out enemy zerg, so it`s kind of suicide.
What?
lol, Rangers can move around the map with great speed. I wouldn’t say as fast as some others but the idea what we can’t run away is just dumb.
LR + SoH + sword + GS with reduced cooldowns is actually the best sustained mobility in the game. RTL and blink are more useful as twitch reactions when things get crazy because theyre so fast (unlike Swoop and Monarch’s Leap). but i can outrun perma swiftness warriors with any sword/GS setup.
That`s very nice video, but 1 remark: Damage is crap? so, in this build you are usless for your team in militrain at any mass PvP battle and usless at siege as range DD. Yes, you can dueling, but you`ll not be able even to cupture a supplay point, it takes too much time. Well, it does mean in this build rangers are absolutely usless for team. And if so, what the reason to be at WvW? Jast to make queue?
this is the whole point of my “Almost” joke. the ranger is ALMOST a good prof in wvw. a couple of people on the forums are taking this prof to the max and showing you guys what it’s best at, for example Sol and Xsorus. ranger’s role in WvW is very questionable, but we’re trying to push it to the max.
damage IS crap (sort of). this is definitely attrition play, as demonstrated. the condi bunker excels at sustain and good sustained damage, which is great for small skirmishes and dueling (arguably, the best the ranger can offer).
however, in larger engagements, burst rules supreme. when you put conditions down on someone, they have the safety of the zerg behind them. they can run in, get cleansed or revived, and come back at you full force. this is the issue with condition builds, and also why necros are subpar (or support role at best) in WvW as well. this is why im testing a burstier SB build currently for roaming with my guildies.

It’s up to jons to fix this mess tbh cuz pets are melted in wvw aoe spam as well. Dungeon aoe is fine imo

Why would Devs play a ranger, they suck and it shows them how bad the class really is…From a Dev post
I personally play Ranger as my main, so I’m fairly aware of how to manage the pet, and do my testing as a ranger primarily. What mechanic do you feel is expressly punishing to a ranger pet?
I’m more than aware of how squishy pets can be in dungeons, but if you could list out all the issues you are speaking of, I can try and address them.https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/dungeons/Dungeon-Patch-Discussion-2-26/page/4#post1551899 To ensure that I am not trolling the Rangers, Robert however… judge for yourselves.
LOL. The situation is much worse than I thought. Robert was like “huh wha..? Pets die in dungeons?”
Dear Robert Hrouda,
since you’re seemingly the man in charge when it comes to dungeons, would you kindly stop abusing broken mechanics that punishes certain classes, until the class devs have been able to actually fix these broken class mechanics?
Yes, I’m primarily talking about rangers, or rather, their pets.
By designing your dungeon encounters in such manner that one class in particular gets punished for a, in many ways, broken class mechanic, thereby abusing this weakness and making these encounters harder, is imho kinda cheap.
I think you’re fully aware of the issues I’m talking about here, right?
Until a fix for all the issues that involves pets has been pushed out to live servers, I strongly suggest you design your dungeons in such a way that no encounter abuses this broken mechanic.
You do realise that many rangers gets kicked out of groups just because of their class, or more so, because of the core mechanic that comes with this class?
So, in all fairness, if an encounter becomes a lot harder to deal with because of pets, or due to the fact that there’s simply no way to keep a pet alive during some encounters (and please remember, the ranger class is balanced around having their pet alive and working), then please stop designing your encounters in such a manner that they constantly put the ranger class at a major disadvantage!
Having issues with this? Then please go ahead and talk to the guys responsible for designing/balancing the classes about this. Just letting things go on in a broken state month after month is indeed very tiresome.
Thanks for reading.

Are you kidding me man? We were told months ago by you or some other dev that you were aware of pets getting aoe’d to death in dungeons and were looking into it. Pets are instagibbed by most bosses because of aoe spam and overall lack of responsiveness of the pet. Alpha and kholer are minor examples of this. Most TA encounters. Basically everything other than trash 1-shots pets. Im not even gonna talk about higher level fractals and agony
It’s not a dungeon problem. Please tell the Jons to fix pets. They need to dodge roll when the ranger dodge rolls. Some sort of skill based evasion is essential or if we’re taking the lazy approach a 30% aoe resistance.

Out of interest nerva, how much health do you have with your gear? Side note, just managed to get my power up to just short of 1800 with a little trait management.
I have 19k hp with shaman armor, runes of the pack and exo knight accessories. Anything less and I just dont think id be able to joust with good thieves. I could go full knight’s but 15k hp doesnt cut it for the ranger. 30 in skirm and 30 in wilderness is a must for me

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/ranger/WvW-Bunker-Ranger-Play/first#post1554909
guard bunkers cant actually do any dps, u know that right?
thx for the idea btw =) how are you finding power working out vs. conditions? i use two traps and they do significant damage on multiple targets. power would only benefit single target dps with SB. i have shaman armor, so giving that up kills my healing, vitality and condition damage, all of which i need badly. healing = sustain, vitality = surviving burst. unfortunately, there isnt PVH gear in the game.
(edited by nerva.7940)
dont ever go full berserker as ranger. i strongly urge you against it. dont waste your gold. going full zerker makes sense on warriors, mesmers and thieves because you can drop targets easily or use endure pain/GS to get away.
going full zerker on the ranger just makes no sense. we have no utilities to help us get away or drop targets in some fashion. not only will you get two-shot by some mouthbreathing thief, but you may even get one-shot if hes got enough might and quickness up. even in large groups a thief can annihilate you, stomp you and disappear. scrub rangers are #1 targets for glass cannon thieves.
tldr full zerker – big mistake until utilities are fixed. i recommend knight’s gear with combination of PVT or cleric’s if u wanna burst people down.
(edited by nerva.7940)
LB projectile speed needs to be increased by another 30%. SB is fine as a hybrid crit/condition and power/crit skirmishing weapon.
quickness on petswap is very strong and i like it. however, i think we should get some kind of bonus when the pet dies/is stowed, maybe its spirit hovers and buffs us in some significant way.
I watched a Guardian do 4vs1 yesterday, just running around, basically trollin’ and spamming heals and regens the whole time, and we could NOT kill him. Try doing that on a Ranger.
i do it all the time. bunker rangers are fine, but this isnt where we lack. the biggest problem is our utilities SUCK. BIG TIME. so there are profs who can go all out on their dps, but thanks to fun and effective utilities, can actually survive a few bursts and/or get away. so ranger dps builds are basically extremely gimped. you cant drop targets, you cant blink.
their priority should be to fix all utlities in one swipe. shouts, spirits, and most signets are utterly useless. traps and survival utilities are balanced, but obviously nothing game-changing.
here are my approximate stats currently (with food) for my SB/GS roaming hybrid. you should aim for at least 50% crit, but i chose to keep more of my defensive stats (still using apothecary weapons instead of berserker/knight):
1500 power
700 condi damage
500 healing
45% crit
1750 toughness
im really liking the balanced build. i killed 2 glass cannon rangers in about 30 seconds (they werent terrible but used LB sadly) as i had so much more sustain and similar dps due to my conditions.
you can either go condition heavy, or more toward power/crit (which is what Sol does)…in my vids i played a pure condition trap bomber (apoth/shaman gear) and did not like it much because it took too long to kill people…in which case u might as well go for a dueling build without GS and SB. SB is a very kittenty weapon without crit, trust me, i tested it pure condi for a while.
i decided to go halfway and keep some of my shaman/apoth gear for additional defense. i still get 2 leaps through HS, giving me an additional 3400 healing.
toughness and condition dmg from wilderness is way more important than +healing from BM, IMO. pets will still hit hard with no BM traits, as long as u have the skirmishing trait.
this build is much more useful for zerg warfare because you can easily throw traps on stragglers and burst them down quick. downside is you dont have nearly as much sustain as your typical condi buinker.
(edited by nerva.7940)
need more JS and JP cuz people mostly wanna know about the “big” stuff like balancing changes. or just start allowing other devs to comment on that in more detail.
at least xeph will be there to ask the tough questions. hope guru gives him the proper air time this time around.
i just wanna know when the hell they plan on ACTUALLY introducing new viable builds for all the profs. branching from that, i also wanna know what they’re doing with ranger spirits.
i guess i have one more question…given how POOR QA is in this game, do they ever plan on giving us access to a PTR so we can help test things before they go live and cause massive uproars.
(edited by nerva.7940)
The flood of these thief vids boils down to one thing: culling abuse. Next.
This thread is pure win
Wow this is a huge buff to rangers lol. Not that we needed it against thieves
my birds and cats are still rocking the crits as before. 4k from raven last night, 3.6k from jag.
pretty sure my jag is hitting the same. regular 2.5k crits, often 3k crits. my jag never did 5-6k crits that crazy.
no sir, really important to turn that off. sometimes i forget to deselect before Monarch’s Leap, which gets me killed.
(edited by nerva.7940)
Wvw is ruled by instant aoe damage and huge single target burst. Ranger does not belong in this meta sadly. Ranger is bauss in spvp tho. All profs except the necro and ranger can do both
thats funny, to me the ranger is the best duelist in the game while i find him utterly useless in larger wvw engagements.
Give me videos and explain your video in-depth or you’re lying.
Yeah u can find my recent vid or just look at xsorus or sol.
Condition bunker is probably the strongest 1v1 spec in the game. Thief is my easiest matchup p/d just takes a while if he doesnt run. Condi rangers are by far the strongest 1v1 condi based spec with the fastest condi reapplication.
In the vids I posted the only unskilled and upleveled opponents were the elementalists, who I demoed as a tutorial on dodging.
Dont get me wrong I get everyone’s grief. I just moved on after about 700 hours about 400 of which were in spvp. But if I wanna duel or skirmish against 5-6 people im bringing my ranger
(edited by nerva.7940)
@kalan
Condis are hugely UP. This is why empathic bond was nerfed. My ranger with EB and HS and healing power simply could not be touched by condis, period. I assume this is another reason why engie condi removal was nerfed
Op youre rightnon every point but it has already been discusses ad nauseum. Me, im just doing wvw until this thing is up and running. Dont need to wait just go play other games/modes and come back in 3-6 months.
What about full berseker nade rifle type build? Is that fun in wvw? I see it being really strong in zerg battles
Yeah after doing some analysis I actually settled on the engie who brings excellent single target dps with rifles, decent aoe dps with nades and has decent survivability with zerker gear.
I just dont see a place for power necros in wvw outside of small skirmishes and popping lich every now and then.
In spvp the build is really solid tho
+1 my experience has been similar. I do have to say that the ranger is probably my fav duelist who can ouput the most single target condition dps, way more than a necro. The ranger is definitely very strong in spvp and skirmishes.
In dungeons im the last one standing but thats about it. In wvw ranger doesnt belong in larger engagements and brings pathetic burst.
So subpar in pve, mediocre in wvw and bauss in spvp.
games are popping almost instantly which is super nice.
premades disappear as they climb ranks
k good. still needs to be cast while moving.
im really enjoying the free tourney solo queue. it’d be nice to just add in map rotation and let hotjoin die in a fire.
how much metrics can they possibly need? if they cant see the problems themselves, then they cant see the problems.
u know whats even funnier? in 6 months, we didnt get a SINGLE new viable build. how messed up is that?
it never reflected, only blocked.
i tested warpath…it’s kinda neat hitting someone for 4k at 1100. but #5 is so freaking bad that it totally kills the weapon. youre not even deflecting, youre blocking. and sitting still for 5 seconds is a recipe for getting owned.
no spirit buff makes me freaking sad and hopeless for the prof.
thats funny, to me the ranger is the best duelist in the game while i find him utterly useless in larger wvw engagements.
thanks, didnt know about that.
this is my third time posting this actually.
