From reading the post and having the problem myself. It seems after downloading today’s patch you can log in and play. If you log out and then try to get back on you find yourself banned. There is an error in the patch… something they modified and didn’t change their security to accept… now the patch is being seen by their anti-hacking software as a hack.

I was in game, then my screen went black. So i closed the client, and tried to log in, and got the banned message.

This is ridiculous. I have never used a 3rd party program. I’ve been using windowed mode only. The only reason i can think of, was that someone reported me for botting. It’s kind of sad that i got banned for no reason. Oh well, i guess i’ll just miss out on the Halloween event and it’s not even my fault.

@Nexxe -

Actually that’s exactly why companies don’t show population. “even though it’s not” is only a copout. Bottom line is this.

Only about 200-300 per server, pop is dropping everyday.

I you use your eyeballs you’ll see the absence of players.

FYI – the large amount of NPCs that are available to chat with aren’t counted as population as they didn’t purchase a copy of GW2, they’re technically employees of ANet.

If everyone knew the exact numbers, everyone would be screaming (like I have been) for a server merge to have a multiplayer MMO.

That’s an exaggeration! Darkhaven has 15,000+.

I don’t like Physical Currency in games. It just takes up valuable bank/bag space.
It would be better to have an extra tab on the Hero sheet listed as Currency, and you can just list the tokens for all dungeons, and badges for all PvP.

No. There is not. It’s rare that companies do this, because then it instills fear into the playerbase that the game is dying, when it’s really not. Almost all servers are Full or High population, except Kaineg, which is always Medium. A-Net raised the population threshold after launch though, but we don’t know if they left it the same or lowered it, since it’s been over a month now.

It is to my great chagrin that I state: The World is Static

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: nexxe.7081

nexxe.7081

Dynamic Events are awesome, and they really do make the world feel alive… but that’s short lived.

If I were to return to a zone that I have 100% completed there is a likely chance that I will stumble upon at least one DE that I haven’t before. But if I go to Snowden Drifts the minotaurs will stampede and there will be DE’s to fight off the grawl, the svanir, the dredge. And I’ve done them all before. The illusion is shattered (pun intended) and you see just how static everything is. Is it as bad as WoW’s rigid quest structure? No, but it’s not all that better either.

I was running around Fields of Ruin and there was a champion branded devourer just standing there. I asked in map chat if anyone was interested, but the zone was pretty empty. So that devourer just stood there for who knows how long as I ran around and did heart quests instead.

1-80 your first time is great (even your second if you do different maps) But if you return to a previous zone be prepared for repetition. Now I know Anet said they will add DE’s to zones over time but I just don’t know if there can do it quick enough.

We have dynamic events, but can we have a dynamic world as well?

What you’re asking for is PERMANENCE. That is so difficult to do in any game and any genre, that involves multiplayer.

You want permanent changes to the world. You want permanent destruction or permanent raids on villages, etc.. Sorry, but you’ll be waiting forever for any company to implement this.

Are there any plans to do something about the empty zones?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: nexxe.7081

nexxe.7081

OP you exaggerate too much. The zones aren’t empty, but less populated. What did you expect? Did you want everyone to stay in the same zones and never progress to lvl 80? I was just in the charr starter zone earlier and i was seeing people everywhere.

The game is fine. People are everywhere, except people like the OP want to see everyone for every second of their online time.

Is GW2 as successful as you hoped?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: nexxe.7081

nexxe.7081

GW2 would have been #1 if it was more traditional. Too many radical changes with combat and roles. It sounded great theory, but in practice, it has been sub-par.

The elimination of Non-Trinity Roles gave us chaos in dungeons.
Target-of-target missing.
Enemy cast bars missing.
Missed skills/spells = Wasted Cooldowns.
Camera/Control mechanics sub-par and amateurish.
the list goes on.

You are listing WoW features and complaining the game doesn’t have them.

I never mentioned WoW. These are standard for more traditional MMOs.

the game does not promote chaos in dungeons – bad players do, just as in every “standard” mmo I ever played.

The mob mechanics target players randomly. What is random? Chaos. There are no threat mechanics that i know of (if anyone knows, please share). We cannot control the mobs threat. We can only “blind”, “root”, “stun”, etc. These are not control mechanics for threat, but control mechanics for movement and actions (such as skills).

It doesn’t matter if players are “dumb” or not. It only matters if they are “aware” of the next move from the boss and/or npcs. And with the exaggerated spell effects in game, it’s very hard to see what skill the boss/npc is going to do next.

Camera and FOV (field of view)

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: nexxe.7081

nexxe.7081

Hey guys. I’m the OP of the first and currently largest thread on camera-related issues: Camera control issues – a documented list and have been following the issue since BWE1.

First of all, thanks Jon for the upfront reply, I appreciate it greatly that you view it as an issue which needs addresing.
For the community: Resorting to personal attacks on Jon is higly unnecessary and counter-productive. Also, tellling him that you know how the game works better than the dev team is horribly arrogant. The fact is that changing the horizontal FoV without changing the aspect ratio does lead to distortion. The fact is also that changing the FoV would lead to some issues, be it performance or something else, otherwise, we would have seen it changed a while ago.

Which leads me to the second point, which is my personal view on the subject.

1) performance suffers greatly because of how things are built and view distances

2) art suffers because of texture tiling, LOD problems and just general stretching from the fisheye effect.

…we are not just limiting it for technical reasons, there are also gameplay implications that we are taking into account that we believe are a core part of the game…

If there was a single reason we might think about looking for a workaround, but because it relates to core issues for 3 of our major departments this is not an easy problem and will remain that way for the foreseeable future.

What this info tells us, combined with the info we have so far (FoV hacks, boss fights, culling, optimization, etc.), is that sadly the GW2 engine is not flexible enough compared to other engines (UT3, Source…) to allow these changes without adding issues, some of which are present even in the current state of the game (culling, texture corruption, LoD).

The fact that the game is not well optimized, and that there is only talk about fixing the mouse smoothing, and not completely remove it, while also taking into account that Jon said that it’s not an easy problem and it’s related to core issues just reinforces my estimation that it’s all very hard-coded with very little engine flexibilty. If I am to speak my mind, I’d say that it’s bad coding, probably due to time/resource constraints.

What does that mean for me personally?
In my topic I’ve talked about a number of points, which all seem to be mutually dependant:

  1. Input Lag
  2. Negative Acceleration
  3. Smoothing
  4. Easing
  5. Camera behaviour
  6. FoV

The first three points are related to game performance, which is not optimized for a wide range of not-high-end machines. The second two points are developer decisions which are not being considered to be completely removed in the forseeable future. The camera behaviour is being addressed and hopefully it will be fixed. The FoV is also a developer decision, which I have discussed previously.

What this sadly means for me, that in the forseeable future, I will not be playing this game.

I share your view and experienced most of the mentioned issues in your post myself.
Followed the game since Comicom 2010, participated in every BWE/stresstest and played since headstart…
I came to the same conclusion; that technical limitations, questionable coding and some rock solid design decisions (I don’t like) are what made changes which will suffice to make the game playable (aka fun) for me very very unlikely…

Just like you I stopped playing.
I even uninstalled the game a couple of days ago because of too many issues and disappointments. Honestly, I gave up on the game.

So sad.

I haven’t given up yet, but this response by a dev is so disappointing. I had hope they would fix this, and i’m not so sure they will fix the camera related issues now. We’ll probably get another response telling us it’s not possible.

LFG possible improvements

Posted by: nexxe.7081

nexxe.7081

I wouldn’t want an automated group finder. What I’d rather see is: When you walk through a dungeon portal, instead of being put directly into the dungeon, you’re ported into a small ‘staging area’ instance which all servers share – like an Overflow, only without a ‘home’ server alternative.

Suddenly, you’re in the same room as everybody else in the world looking for a group for that particular dungeon, and yet the system is not completely randomized and robbed of all social interaction.

This would be really nice! It would be like the SPvP mists area.

Just because you have more skills doesn’t make it more fun, or more desirable. Ever hear of quality over quantity? The skills in GW2 are way better than the massive amount of GW1 skills. How many of those skills in GW1 were ignored too? They weren’t “optimal” anyway if you did PvX builds.

OK, I’ll grant you that WoW’s LFG system is lifeless and boring.

But the system that GW2 uses (i.e. no system at all) is worse. Spamming map chat for 20-30 minutes isn’t fun. Seeing everyone else spam map chat constantly isn’t fun. Being suppressed for asking in map chat isn’t fun.

WoW used to have a channel for LFG. It didn’t solve the first problem, but it more or less solved the other two. GW2 could at least do that much.

I’ve been around since Vanilla and all I remember is /2 Trade chat…was LFG chat.

No, there really was a LFG channel for a while. I’m not making it up!

Kwami is correct. There was a server-wide LFG channel, and then they got rid of it. It was so helpful too, since you could be on an alt, and then see who was LFG, then you could switch to another character and join right away.

Having a great time with no dungeon finder

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

In GW2, I am forced to find groups if I want to party for a dungeon. In WoW, the dungeon finder was awesome at first, but when you stand back and look at what it has done…you begin to realize that maybe it wasn’t necessary.

I feel as if WoW’s dungeon finder connected people without them having to ‘connect themselves’. Instead of going out, spending whatever amount of time to find people, /w them and ask them questions…etc, and then invite them to the party…WoW makes grouping almost brain dead.

I remember grouping in WoW through dungeon finder and never talking to the person I was with. Like we are just going through the motions and he is there as an extra body.

I just got out of an instance in GW2 (CM SM) and had a blast with my party. We joked and talked more than my parties in WoW did.

So instead of creating another lobby system and doing everything for us Anet, I think in my unqualified opinion that an MMO should be about communicating and forming groups ‘ourselves’ to accomplish goals.

Note: And yes I do realize how long groups can take to form…etc. I am sure there are ideas for that ‘without’ a dungeon finder.

You do realize this how GW2 works though, right? There is no need to “connect” to others. Everyone is automatically “grouped”, and the only exception is dungeons. It’s like taking two steps forward and one step back.

The dungeon finder works because its more efficient to find other players, and it’s more efficient on time.

edit: i also thought GW2 was supposed to be the casual gamer’s mmo… but it’s really not if you have to waste time finding groups.
